HOKUSAI KATSUSHIKA
- Erakuya Toshiro, Tokyo 1815, 15,5x22,5cm, 30f., cousu. Wikipedia. On rappellera que la technique … [Click Below for Full Description]

Laing, John
London: J. Mawman; and David Brown, Edinburgh, 1815. [6],171,[2]pp. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled paper boards, expertly rebacked in matching calf, spine ruled in gilt, gilt leather label. Boards lightly rubbed and shelfworn. Occasional slight foxing, small hole from paper flaw in upper margin of pp.23-24 and center of pp.104-105 (affecting two letters of text). Very good. First edition of Laing's account of his time as surgeon aboard the H.M.S. Resolution on a whaling voyage to the Arctic during the years 1806-07, with William Scoresby Sr. as captain and William Scoresby Jr. as first officer. Laing describes his experiences at sea and of Spitzbergen and the Shetland Islands, and also includes interesting historical sketches of the whale fisheries of various countries (including the American and English), as well as an overview of arctic zoology. During this voyage, Scoresby reached Latitude 81° 50' N., which remained the highest northern latitude attained in the eastern hemisphere for over twenty years. The ship's barometer was the same as that used by Capt. Cook (although this ship was not Cook's Resolution). ^This particular copy has an esteemed provenance, having passed through the collections of E. Lee Dorsett and Barbara Johnson, who were two of the most prominent whaling collectors of the twentieth century. As the introduction to the Swann catalogue of the Johnson sale notes: "If the adage 'too much of a good thing' has any merit, it would ideally describe The Barbara Johnson Collection. London: Printed for W. Clark and Sons, Law Booksellers, 1815. First edition of each title.. Half-title rather clumsily bound into the first volume; a bit cracked along the gutter at the conclusion of the final pamphlet; cloth a bit sunned, some light rubbing and wear and soiling; in very good condition.. 3 vols in 1, 8vo, bound into ca. 1908 coarse library linen with leather spine labels and a paper shelfmark label, viii, 60; viii, 251, [2]; 107, [1] pages. In Mr. Donnellan's Case, it surely will excite wonder, that he, from such circumstances, was found Guilty. It was, certainly, the first, and it is to be hoped it will be the last Case, in which a person was convicted of having administered a poison, which poison was never proved to have existed. In most of these Cases, a person had been murdered.----Sir Theodosius Boughton was never proved to have been murdered; and he never would have been suspected to have died any other than a natural death, or died from a mistake of the Apothecary, had not Mr. Donnellan been married to his Sister." Three tracts on the nature of circumstantial evidence in capital crimes (and by extension treating the consequence of executions of innocent individuals), all taking as a starting point the case of John Donellan, executed in 1781 for the supposed murder of his poxed and costive young brother-in-law, Sir Theodosius Broughton, who died after ingesting an apothecary's draught (a not-unheard of consequence of Georgian medicine) and whose estate on his death was to revert to Donellan's wife rather than to the deceased's mother--who herself se … [Click Below for Full Description]

RICH, Claudius James.
London, Longman, Hurst, et al., 1815-1818. Two volumes in one, 8vo. Slightly later slate cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pp. iv, 67; [iv], 58, 6 engraved plates (3 folding); spine and extremities a little worn; offsetting from first plate to title, a little toned or spotted in places; otherwise very good. Second English edition of volume one, first of volume II, Rich's earliest and rarest contribution to Mesopotamian archaeology. The first memoir had been published previously in German in Hammer-Purgstall's Mines de l'Orient in Vienna. Rich was a talented linguist had who travelled widely in Asia Minor. Posted to Egypt during the early part of his career, he travelled from there, in Mamluk disguise, to Syria, Palestine, Damascus, Baghdad and Basra. In 1810 he was appointed the East India Company's resident in Baghdad. Rich was 'apparently fluent in Turkish, Arabic and Persian and familiar with Syriac and Chinese as well as French, Greek, Latin and Hebrew. [He] first visited Babylon in December 1811 where he stayed for 10 days and briefly excavated at the Mujelibé as well as re-excavating the Lion of Babylon and putting a trench into the mound of Tell Ibrahim Khalil; collected a small number of objects from this region' (Horniman Museum & Gardens, online). These two little volumes exploring the mounds of Babylon, Nineveh, and Persepolis brought Mesopotamian antiquities to European attention. 'He died on 5 October 1821 and was buried in the Jan Numa at Shiraz, in which he was living at the time of his death. His remains were exhumed and reinterred in the Armenian cathedral o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chatham-Street [Bowery, Manhattan, 1815. Broadside advertisement. Quarto. Measuring 9 ¼" x 11 ¼". Scattered foxing and light old folds, very good or better. An unrecorded and probably unique broadside advertisement printed on an untrimmed sheet of handmade wove paper, circa 1815-20, for a sideshow exhibit on Chatham-Street (the original name of present day Park Row), when it was part of the Bowery in New York City. An early sideshow advertisement for the 4000-lb. "Ox President," bred by Joseph Hough, a farmer from Springfield in Burlington County, New Jersey. According to Burlington County Tax records from 1811, Hough owned a 207 acre farm with 32 householders. Perhaps in competition with other sideshow curiosity attractions that showcased an exotic elephant or lion imported from abroad, this broadside includes two paragraphs of additional billing, advertising the curious attachment of "this noble animal, to which the world can produce no equal," to his Mother. A full transcription follows: "The Wonderful Ox President, Will be exhibited in Chatham-Street, opposite the Jail. This noble animal, to which the world can produce no equal, was reared by Joseph Hough, Esq. of Springfield, Burlington County, West Jersey, and is now eight years old, and weighs rising / 4000 lbs. The President has never been separated from his mother, he was allowed to suck until he left off himself. The attachment between the Mother and Son is so strong, that it was found impossible to separate them, and consequently they were both sold together. It is said that they always traversed their pasture in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dakin, Timothy
September 16, [Concord?], 1815. Broadside, approx. 15" x 9", signed in type by Timothy Dakin; paper toned, folded, creased, and with several small holes (one affecting 2 letters - sense remains clear), some chipping at extremities including a 4" x 1" loss at the top corner (no loss of any text). Under the lengthy running head is a list of 8 auction lots for sale, mostly undeveloped land, but one with "a small dwelling house [and] a fine young orchard" on the main road in Groton. One lot is adjacent to the Groton meeting-house and most of the lots within 5 miles of it. The last lot consists of 11 parcels totaling 768 acres. Groton and Hebron are located in Grafton County, N.H. about 45 miles NNW of Concord. In addition to Dakin, who lived in Mason, N.H., near the Massachusetts border, interested parties may contact Eleazar Ball in Groton, N.H. Dakin was a prosperous mill owner in Greenville, N.H. The fine brick-end Federal house that he built there in 1814 still stands. Aaron Brown (1752-1811) was a Groton, Massachusetts merchant who served as the town's representative to the Massachusetts General Court, 1791-1793. Not in OCLC; not in American Imprints.

No. 42, North Main, Providence, RI, [1815]. Age toning, and foxing. Minor tears. . A poem about the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, and more specifically about the hero of that navy battle Commander Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819), and his fellow naval officer, Captain Jesse Duncan Elliott (1782-1845). Perry is famously remembered for shouting "Don't Give Up the Ship", when the ship he was on, the U.S.S. Lawrence, was taking heavy fire. One of the lines in the poem states in regard to Perry and Elliott, "O had you but seen those noble commanders, Embracing each other when the conflict [was] over." These lines are highly ironic as there is significant evidence to support that neither of the men like each other and in fact that Perry felt that Elliott acted as coward during the battle. There were official charges filed, but nothing came of it. Below is an excerpt from the poem: "Ye tars of Columbia give ear to my story, Who fought with brave Perry where cannons did roar, Your valour has gained you an immortal glory, A fame that shall last until time is no more! Columbian tars are the true sons of Mars, They rake fore and aft when they fight on the deep On the head of Lake Eire commanded by Perry They caused many Britains to take their last sleep." Single sheet, printed in two columns. OCLC 0. Measures 10" x 7 1/4"

Trial: Stocks, Michael, Defendant
1815. Fraud In The Yorkshire Coal Fields [Trial]. Stocks, Michael, Defendant. An Authentic Report Of The Trial Of Michael Stocks, Esq. For Wilful And Corrupt Perjury, At The Yorkshire Lent Assizes, 1815. Before The Honourable Sir Alexander Thompson, Knt. Chief Baron Of His Majesty's Exchequer, And A Special Jury. Huddersfield: Sold by the Principal Booksellers in London; And the Booksellers of York, Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax, Sheffield, Wakefield, Rochdale, Manchester, &c., 1815. 116 pp. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into nineteenth-century unlettered pebbled cloth. Light rubbing to extremities with light wear to spine ends, corners bumped, minor spotting to boards. Light toning to text, finger smudges and light foxing to a few leaves. A very good copy. * First edition, second issue (with the errata all corrected). Stocks was accused of stealing and selling 10,000 tons of coal from mines in Northowram, in the West-Riding of Yorkshire, he owned in partnership with two other men. Stocks was not convicted. The trial details the contractual history of the partnership, such contentious matters as the exact legal boundaries of neighboring mines and coal-pits and the nature of written and verbal agreements. This appears to be an unrecorded issue. OCLC locates no copies of this imprint. [Attributes: First Edition]

[American Postal System]
Anderston, Scotland: Robert Gillespie, 1815. Sepia engraving, printed on linen. Sheet size: 21 x 24 1/4 inches. Sewn to backing board. Minor foxing and staining, a bit of fading. Very good. Matted. A rare post road and distance chart, printed on linen, detailing the post roads in the fledgling United States. The broadside includes three charts summarizing the American post road network, surrounded by a decorative grapevine border, illustrated with medallions of the first four presidents, four sailing ships, Lady Liberty, and the seal of the United States. The chart tracks the distances between post towns along the "Main Line" from Passamaquoddy, Maine to Savannah, Georgia. To the right, a chart shows the "Cross Post Roads, giving distances along post roads crossing the main line." A statistical table in the lower left includes information on each state and territory, including numbers of counties, acreage, square mileage, population, etc. Another table details rates of postage for letters conveyed by land. The printer, Robert Gillespie, was one of three sons of William Gillespie, cotton spinner and calico printer, who was active outside of Glasgow at the end of the 18th century. One of his sons, Colin Gillespie, moved to America and became a successful merchant. Colin's brother, Richard Gillespie, took over the calico printing business in 1808 or 1809. Colin Gillespie arrived in the United States in 1793, became a citizen in 1798, and thereafter traveled between the United States and Great Britain on business for a number of years, trading under the name of Colin Gil … [Click Below for Full Description]
