[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Bradley, Joshua
printed by Oliver Farnsworth, 1815. First edition, 8vo, pp. vi, [7]-190; original blue paper-covered boards backed in calf; boards peeling revealing the wood; a very good copy of an uncommon speller. No other edition was published. Bradley was a pastor at the Baptist Church in Windsor having come there from Newport. So must have Oliver Farnsworth who printed a sermon for Bradley's ordination when he was in Newport. And Bradley also looks to have been brought up on forgery charges in Connecticut in 1812 relating to a charge of forging ministerial credentials. An interesting feature of the book is the section on Polite Learning where particulars are given via the Socratic method on the states and territories, physical features of the earth, and more profoundly on taste, criticism, beauty, sublimity in language and writing, perspicuity and precision, hyperbole and metaphor. American Imprints 34198; Gilman, p. 38; McCorison, p. 359. Ten in OCLC. [Attributes: First Edition]

Serampore: Mission Press, 1815. A View Of The History, Literature, And Religion Of The Hindoos: Including A Minute Description Of Their Manners And Customs, And Translations From Their Principal Works Two Vols, Complete. Ward, William. Serampore: Printed at the Mission Press, 1815-18. Second Edition. The author was a Baptist missionary in India for many years, dying of cholera at Serampore in 1823. A printer by trade, his primary task from his arrival in 1799 until 1818 was superintending the Baptist missionary press in Bengal, by means of which the scriptures, translated into Bengali, Mahratta, Tamil, and twenty-three other languages, were disseminated throughout India. From 1818 to 1821 he travelled in Great Britain, Germany and the United States to raise funds for the Baptist college at Serampore. The present authoritative work was first published at Serampore in 1811; this is the second, and best, edition, expanded from the first. Although Ward did not mince his words in his condemnation of 'Hindoo idolatry', he did comment favorably on the literary and philological achievements of Hindu scholars, and in later versions modified somewhat the harshness of his strictures on Hinduism. Despite some serious inaccuracies, Ward's work remains without parallel as a detailed account by a European observer of Hindu society and religion in early nineteenth-century Bengal. An appealing set of this important and uncommon early work of South Asian anthropology. Original quarto sized volumes, beautifully printed with large margins and attractive typesets from the Serampore Mission Pres … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORNAY.
Howlett and Brimmer, and Dove for Edward Orme, London, 1815. FIRST EDITION OF THE BEST ILLUSTRATED BOOK ON SAINT-PETERSBURG, FULLY HAND-COLOURED. Published at six guineas coloured, this is a superb record of the city of Peter the Great - captured in the wake of the Napoleonic wars - and divided into two sections; the first 12 plates represent the months of the year through characteristic views of the city; the other eight illustrate different modes of transport, various types of sledges and carriages, but include excellent character studies, showing diverse types of costume by class and by season. The 26-page introduction entitled "The present state of St. Petersburgh," includes a brief historical survey and a few statistics, along with descriptions of the main sites and monuments. "Though unsigned, [the letterpress] was chiefly compiled from Robert Ker Porter's Travelling Sketches [in Russia and Sweden during the years 1805–1808], as many sections repeat his text verbatim" (Giroud). Mornay, the artist responsible for the original sketches upon which Clark and Dubourg's aquatints were based, eludes identification and does not appear in Thieme-Becker’s extensive dictionary of artists. Martin Hardie, in characteristically waspish fashion, describes the plates as "lurid in colouring, very much in the style of toy theatre scenery" (English Coloured Books, 1906, p. 138); this is entirely unfair, the colouring in the present copy is certainly not "lurid" and the "toy theatre" quality of the views only lends them a most appealing charm: many of the views are composed in such a way … [Click Below for Full Description]

ont>, 1815. A great copy of the first edition of this lavishly hand-colour aquatint illustrated collection of letters written on a 1802 trip to Italy, illustrated beautifully by Thomas Rowlandson. The first edition of this work in book form. Illustrated with a hand-colour aquatint frontispiece, hand-colour aquatint title page, one hand-colour aquatint folding map, one hand-colour aquatint map, and fourteen hand-colour aquatint plates. Collated, complete. Collated from the list of plates to the rear of the work. Rebacked with the original boards restored. This work was originally published as letters in 'Repository of Arts' between the years 1809 and 1813, under the title 'Letters from Italy'. This first edition is preferred, as the serialised version of this work did not contain plates. The work is a collection of twenty letters written whilst the author was on a trip to Italy, in 1802. The letters contain rich descriptions of the scenery and society of Italy at the turn of the nineteenth century. Written by Lewis Engelbach, though little is known about him. Illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson, though he probably only illustrated nine of the plates, plates numbered 1, 3, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 16, and only the frontispiece bears his signature. Rowlandson was a noted Georgian caricaturist and artist, who was known for his political and social satire in his work. Stamp to the tail of the title page, '3507013'. Condition: In a full calf binding, rebacked with the original boards restored. A little rubbing to the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be printed, 11 July, 1815. Folio, pp. 7, (3), 129, (3), 131-152, (2), 153-182, (2), 183-214, and 8 engraved plates (6 double-page) of designs for the West Riding, Bethlem, and other asylums. Early manuscript pagination in upper corner of rectos and plates. Foxing on the plates, otherwise a clean copy. Original blue boards (corners a little worn), new paper spine with printed paper label, new endpapers. FIRST EDITION of the four Reports for 1815, one of the most important documents in the history of psychiatry. The actual report of the committee comprises the first 7 pages, the four Reports themselves containing the Minutes of Evidence, taken from some of the leading figures in psychiatry of the time. There were four Reports in 1815, published between 25 May and 26 June, and a further three in 1816. "Together they were a survey of the conditions and treatment of the insane wherever they were confined... A revelation to all but a few when they appeared, they are today a historical source of the first importance containing information nowhere else to be found about how the insane actually fared as opposed to what was written about insanity in books, a disparity between theory and practice which emerges glaringly. Next to them the two earlier Parliamentary enquiries...appear almost insignificant. In contrast the 1815/16 Committee's Minutes of evidence is a monumental documentary...with plans of asylums, covering all aspects of asylum life..." (Hunter & Macalpine, pp. 696-703). Original printed paper-covered boards, remains of longitudinal printed label to the spine. Engraved map frontispiece and 9 other plates. Boards quite heavily rubbed, soiled, and softened, paper covering of spine largely lacking, joints cracked to the cords, free endpapers unevenly torn away, browning and spotting throughout, heavy in places, damp staining to the fore- and head-margin, quite heavy in the first third or so, a fairly poor copy, but complete. First and only contemporary edition. A curiosity, a journal of a round trip to the West Indies being "chiefly made up of a series of minute engravings in which the events of each day are set forth pictorially. In all there are no fewer than 125 pictures, the whole being accompanied by a running commentary" (Couper, The Millers of Haddington, Dunbar and Dunfermline, p. 95). The author's father, George Miller (1771–1835), came from an established Dunbar mercantile family, a man of wide interests - "support schemes for Scottish schoolmasters, campaigns against slavery, moral improvement of the ordinary working person and, from 1807, a scheme to provide East Lothian with a lifeboat" - he allowed himself to be seduced by diversification (John Gray Centre, East Lothian People, retrieved 20/04/2020). 1815. Condition: Buone condizioni. William Ward
