Daniel Drake
Cincinnati: Looker & Wallace, 1815. NATURAL AND STATISTICAL VIEW, OR PICTURE OF CINCINNATI and the Miami Country; with an Appendix, Containing Observations on the Late Earthquakes, the Aurora Borealis, and the South-West Wind by Daniel Drake From 1815, the first book of its kind, detailing the Cincinnati area's history, geography, demographics, geology, natural history, native antiquities, etc. This important work was comprised almost entirely of the author's original scholarship, and it was drawn upon by other writers for decades afterwards. This leatherbound first printing lacks the two folding maps but otherwise remains in good condition. The front cover is beginning to split along the spine; the covers otherwise show fairly minor wear. The text is well-bound. There are a couple vintage book plates affixed to the front endpaper, no further ownership marks. There is a water stain affecting the last several pages (photos 10 & 11), otherwise the text has a few small chips, some foxing and minor stains, etc.; no major defects. Very rare, and by far the best price online. Copies elsewhere list from $1,375 - $2,500. Measures 4.25" X 7", iv + 251 pages plus index and errata. Ships promptly & securely. Hamilton, Mrs. Elizabeth
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1815. First edition. Rebound to style in quarter calf over marbled boards with gilt and morocco label to spine. All edges speckled red. Collating complete: [4], 354. Light, uniform toning throughout, else a clean and unmarked copy of this important educational work by a leader of 19th century pedagogy who encouraged schools to give equal access to students without regard to class or sex. It is the only copy on the market. Writing the present work toward the end of her career, Hamilton acknowledges that by now, "the question concerning the wisdom and eligibility of teaching the children of the poor to read and write seems by general consent determined in the affirmative...in the country in which I now write, the benefits of education have long been enjoyed by the labouring classes." In this sense, her work and that of her colleagues has been a success. Yet another hurdle remains. "If we admit that the system of education adopted by parochial schools at the period of their establishment was suited to the state of the then society, we must also allow that, in so far as it was calculated for the state of society at that present period, it can only be adopted with propriety under similar circumstances...In what great town has any suitable provision been made for the instruction of the multitude?" The methods of schooling being used are thus out of step with the needs of the range of children being now educated; and they must be adjusted to that infant minds are excited, engaged, and active from the start. Hamilton's Hints offer a corre … [Click Below for Full Description]

EGERTON, Michael.
[2], 34 pp. plus plates.First and only edition of an eccentric account of a tour in what is now Belgium (from 1815 to 1830 part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands) by a fictional traveller referred to as "Omnium Gatherum", humorously written and brilliantly illustrated by Michael Egerton, whose work has been compared with that of George Cruikshank. The people he sees play an important role, from the passengers in the coaches to a chimney sweep on a roof, people drinking and dancing, soldiers in the streets and Waterloo locals who try to fob off any piece of garbage as a remnant of the battle. The handsome plates depict coaches, barges, the exchange in Antwerp, costumes, and monuments at Waterloo. Gatherum lands at Ostend, then travels to Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp and finally Waterloo, which is covered very extensively, only 15 years after Wellington defeated Napoleon. With bookplate of the Philadelphia art collector Charles Edward Dunlap. In very good condition, with only a small marginal tear in one leaf. The binding has cracks in the hinges, but is otherwise in good condition. A delightful and brilliantly colour-illustrated tour of the sights of Flanders, Brussels and Waterloo.l Abbey, Travel 188; Tooley, Coloured plates 207.

[EROTICA - DRAWINGS].
A matching set of 12 skilfully executed erotic gouache drawings in numerous colours, each showing a naked or (more often) partly undressed young man and woman engaged in manual, vaginal or oral sex. Each is set in an interior (in at least most cases domestic), most of them richly furnished. Though the drawings depict several different men and women, some of them seem to appear in more than one drawing. One drawing appears to show a home library, another includes a case full of books and two others have an open book lying on the floor. Another has the woman sitting on the man's lap before a writing desk with a quill pen in her hand. These may be intended to suggest that the man is the young lady's tutor and they got distracted from their lessons. The clothing suggests couples from fairly high social standing. The clothing, architectural decoration, furniture, clocks, lamps, vases, etc., much of it in Empire Style, suggest a date around 1815, perhaps in France. The drawings are in good condition and the binding fine.

[WIBMER, Jean Baptiste Didier].
112 pp. (incl. photocopies)10 instalments of the very rare Dutch satirical periodical Utopiaansch weekblad, written anonymously by Wibmer in the form of dialogues between the author and the Utopia-born servant Hans, who informs him of the latest gossip. Added is instalment 6 of Wibmer's similarly absurdist Utopiaansche courant, a periodical that preceded the Weekblad and satirized King Willem I, who had ruled the Low Countries since Napoleon's defeat in 1815. Both periodicals contain severe but cleverly hidden criticism of Dutch politics, society and circumstances of the day. Wibmer (1792-1836), trained as a minister of the Walloon Church, acknowledged his authorship, leading the church to relieve him of his post. On 8 September 1819, soon after publication of the present instalment 6 of the Courant, Wibmer was arrested along with the publisher and printer (Molenijzer and Brouwer) on various charges, including sedition. He successfully argued that his text had no comprehensible meaning and was acquitted, publishing his witty defence as Pleitrede (1819), as well as a 7th number of the Courant and then the present Weekblad. On 6 April 1820, soon after publication of the present Weekblad 12, he was arrested again. This time he was convicted on some counts and sentenced to six years' imprisonment. Perhaps he had already written nos. 13 and 14, published after his arrest. Released a year early, in 1825, he publish an account of his second arrest, trial and incarceration, and continued his satirical writing. Each instalment with a tax stamp. CARTER, John
1815. A fine archive of three original drawings by the English "mouth artist" John Carter, two letters by his biographer, a copy of the revised edition of Carter's Memoir, and related materials. A fine collection of three original drawings by John Carter (31 July 1815 - 2 June 1850), an English mouth artist, together with a memoir and two autograph letters discussing Carter's work by William James Dampier, Carter's first biographer. The collection also includes a heliotype after a drawing by Carter as well as a list of subscribers to Dampier's memoir. The small collection was apparently presented by Dampier to one of his friends. Original drawings by carter are rare, as most "of his work, now widely dispersed and probably unrecognized, is of course only known from nineteenth century reproductions" (Trevor Disley) John Carter was born in Coggeshall, Essex, "of humble parents", as Dampier notes. At school "he showed a disposition to scribble the figure of a man, a horse, or a bird, upon his desk or copy book, when he should have been doing his lessons". On leaving school, he took up an apprenticeship as a silk-weaver, and subsequently set up on his own in 1835. His private life was not without volatility, however. "Carter was accustomed to spend much of his earnings, and much of his time, at the public-house - a certain sign of a depraved condition, and of readiness for mischief." One Saturday in May, 1836, Carter and some friends were "attracted to the rookery at Holfield Grange, and John ... ascended first one of the tall trees in search of birds." He missed his hold a … [Click Below for Full Description]

OS, Georgius Jacobus Johannes.
[Flowers and fruits on a marble plinth].[Paris or Holland], [ca. 1815-1825]. Four watercolour drawings on paper, three signed "G.J.J Van Os", edged with a thin black border. [4] ll. Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os (1782-1861), not to be confused with his nephew George Jac. Joh. Van Os (1805-1841), also a painter, was as a member of a Dutch family of artists. He studied with his father, Jan van Os, a painter of flowers and maritime views. In 1812 Georgius entered the Salon de Paris for the first time. In the following period he not only worked in Paris, but also in The Hague and Amsterdam. In Sèvres, a southwestern suburb of Paris, he worked for the famous porcelain factory. After 1826 he settled definitively in Paris where he died in 1861. He is mainly known for his exquisite "natures mortes", specializing in still lifes of flowers, fruit and game. From early on he demonstrated such exceptional talent that he was asked to paint several flowers for the plates of Jan Kopss famous Flora Batava (1800-1822). He soon developed into one of the most celebrated still life painters of the 19th century. These four exquisite watercolours show well-considered arrangements of (1) a fig, citron, walnut, gooseberries and blackberries; (2) peonies and jasmine; (3) lilies and lilacs and (4) peonies and morning glories. Some discolouring at the edges from a former frame, otherwise in good condition. [MANUSCRIPT]. [ASSAROTTI, Ottavio Giovanno Battista].
Dottrina Christiana. [Manuscript in Italian].[Genoa, ca. 1815/20]. 8vo. With 117 (of 118) full-page hand-coloured drawings, each in a frame of double rules (20.5 x 14 cm), with lively illustrations of the Christian doctrine, and text in Italian. Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled spine. 117 (of 118), [3 blank] ll., including the last 3 blanks. Important manuscript containing a method of teaching "Dottrina Christiana" (Christian doctrine) to Italian deaf-mutes, devised in Genoa by Padre Ottavio Giovanni Battista Assarotti (Genoa 1753-1829). Assarotti was an Italian philanthropist and founder of the first school for deaf-mute people in Italy. It is not certain that Assarotti himself wrote the present manuscript, which may be the work of one of his collaborators, based on the method Assarotti invented and developed and using the illustrations he designed. The introduction discusses the difficulty of teaching abstract concepts, such as religion, to deaf-mute pupils, necessitating the use of illustrations as designed by Assarotti. Assarotti "never wrote down his educational philosophy and methods, and so fell into obscurity after his death" (Deaf history unveiled). As far as we know this manuscript is the only surviving witness of Assarotti's theories. The style of the watercolours is somewhat primitive and popular, but very rich in detail. They illustrate faith in general ("fede"; nos. 1-42); the commandments ("legge"; nos. 43-51); prayers ("preghiera" 1-10; nos. 52-61); the sacraments ("sacramenti"; nos. 62-95, 97-104); virtues ("virtu" 1-14; nos. 105-118), and include views o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Smith, W[illiam] Tyler
First edition of one of the key Victorian obstetrics manuals. Uncommon in commerce. Physician William Tyler Smith (1815-1873) earned his MD in 1848 and for several years worked mainly as a writer and educator, serving on the editorial staff of The Lancet and helping found the Medical Directory in 1845. Beginning in 1851 he worked as an obstetrician and lecturer at St. Mary's Hospital, and was examiner of obstetrics at the University of London for the typical term of five years. Smith was one of the founders of the Obstetrical Society, and was elected its second president in 1860. "The subsequent success of the society was largely due to his contributions in memoirs and in debate and to his capacity for work" (ODNB). "Urged by his close friend Marshall Hall, Smith studied the applications of the reflex function to obstetrics, with the result that the practice of obstetrics became, for the first time, guided by physiological principle. The results of his researches were published in The Lancet in the form of weekly lectures.
