Wagner, Richard
Star German opera composer (1813-1883), together with Giuseppe Verdi, Wagner was the most famous creator and a dominant figure in the genre for several decades of the 19th century. Short but wonderful autograph note signed, saying that "by request, gentlemen Dr. Forster and Neumann are highly recommended". Angelo Neumann (1838-1910) and August Forster were both managers of the Leipzig Opera theater and responsible for the premiere of the Ring in Wagner´s birth city. More information about Wagner, and his long and rather complex but fruitful relationship with Neumann and Forster is described in the book "Richard Wagner and the Jews" by Milton E. Brener. See HERE. This is a rare, important document connecting this men, since there is a truly interesting and long history between them. Autograph note is 8.6 x 5.5 inches, folds, small crack over the bottom of the vertical fold, overall age toning but in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a nice, modern photo postcard of the composer, 4.1 x 5.9 inches, in excellent condition.

DOWNEY, Thomas.
London: by T. C. Hansard for C. Cradock and W.Joy, and J. Hatchard,, 1813. Quarto (350 x 260 mm). Original drab boards, paper label to the spine.Modern bookplate to the front free endpaper, which has stained through to the verso slightly, joints a little cracked, spine chipping, boards a touch rubbed, but an excellently preserved, uncut copy. First edition. Downey explains that he has written "The Pleasures of Naval Life" as a corrective to the "tone of querulous despondence" that underlies so much naval literature; "The Naval Life is NOT a series of privations, distresses, and affliction. It presents a variety of situations, the delights of which are heightened by contrast." The poem takes the form of an account of a voyage from Falmouth to India, returning to London via St. Helena. In the second part he essays a blow-by-blow account of Nelson's climactic victory in rhyming couplets. The impressive four-page subscribers list includes Dr. William Beatty, who attended the dying Nelson on board Victory, Admirals Northesk and Durham, Vice Admiral Harvey and Captains Bayntun and Pellew, all of whom served in the battle, together with Cochrane, Admiral Duckworth, Admiral Keith, and John Wilson Croker, secretary to the Board of Admiralty, to whom the book is dedicated. An extremely handsome copy of an uncommon title, four copies only on COPAC, copy in NMM. [Attributes: First Edition]

Since that time it has never been out of print, is reported to be one of the most published books in the English language. Charles Darwin claimed that he ‘stood on the shoulders’ of White, and came on ‘a pilgrimage to Selborne’ as a young man in June 1857. Numerous great English writers and naturalists have been influenced by Gilbert White, such as the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who called White’s ‘Natural History of Selborne’ a ‘sweet delightful book’. R. Ackermann. London. 1813 (Circa 1870?). PORTFOLIO OF 13 PLATES. No text, as issued. (Paper size 14.9 x 11.3 inches. The portfolio is 15.5 x 12 inches). Portrait of Blake, by T. Phillips, RA; Engraved title page (dated 1808) and 11 plates, all stating Ackermann as publisher, dated 1813 and engraved by Louis Schiavonetti, after Blake's designs. The pages have a little bumping to the edges but well away form the engraved area. Plates a little dusty and toned but the impressions are good. The original portfolio is brown Morocco grained cloth with elaborate blind tooled designs to both boards. Gilt lettering to the front board. Only one small piece of one silk tie remaining. Yellow coated endpapers. 3 small clippings from bookseller catalogues, each listing copies of the Blair/Blake book, tipped in to the front pastedown endpaper. Some minor rubbing and bumping to the cloth but the gilt is still very bright and the cloth clean. Overall a very good example of this rare edition. ----- "When Gilchrist's Life of William Blake (1863) made the artist's name familiar again, a deposit of prints left over from 1813 came to light, probably in Ackerman's storehouse. Somebody (possibly John Cameron Hotton) reissued the books... There are no new title pages, no dates or places indicated; but the bindings are in mid-Victorian style, and could not have been made in the first half-century." Blair” addressed to “The Committee of Invitation & c. & c.” that was also The Committee of Invitation of the late Meeting at Cooper Institute. The organizers held a great anti-slavery meeting at New York City’s Cooper Institute on March 6, 1862.Blair, one of the most conservative members of Lincoln’s cabinet, wrote this lengthy and important statement on slavery and the Civil War. This was written six months before Lincoln first announced the Emancipation Proclamation: “…I do not concur in the proposition that certain States have been 'recently overturned and wholly subverted as members of the Federal Union upon which the call is based. This is, in substance, what the Confederates themselves claim, and the fact that succession is maintained by the authors of this call, for a different purpose, does not make it more constitutional…No one who knows my political career will suspect that my condemnation of this doctrine in influenced by any indisposition to put an end to slavery. I have left no opportunity unimproved to strike at it, and have never been restrained from doing so by personal considerations. But I have never believed that the abolition of Slavery…could or ought to be effected, except by lawful and constitutional modes…there are two distinct interests in Slavery, the political and property interest, held by distinct classes. The rebellion originated with the political class. Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blair" addressed to "The Committee of Invitation & c. & c." that was also The Committee of Invitation of the late Meeting at Cooper Institute. The organizers held a great anti-slavery meeting at New York City's Cooper Institute on March 6, 1862. Blair, one of the most conservative members of Lincoln's cabinet, wrote this lengthy and important statement on slavery and the Civil War. This was written six months before Lincoln first announced the Emancipation Proclamation: "...I do not concur in the proposition that certain States have been 'recently overturned and wholly subverted as members of the Federal Union upon which the call is based. This is, in substance, what the Confederates themselves claim, and the fact that succession is maintained by the authors of this call, for a different purpose, does not make it more constitutional...No one who knows my political career will suspect that my condemnation of this doctrine in influenced by any indisposition to put an end to slavery. I have left no opportunity unimproved to strike at it, and have never been restrained from doing so by personal considerations. But I have never believed that the abolition of Slavery...could or ought to be effected, except by lawful and constitutional modes...there are two distinct interests in Slavery, the political and property interest, held by distinct classes. The rebellion originated with the political class. The property class.. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Birch
London: 1813. Title: The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, engraved by Mr. Houbraken and Mr Vertue. With their Lives and Characters by Thomas Birch, A.M. F.R.S. A New Edition. Author: Thomas Birch: Jacobus Houbraken and George Vertue (engravers) Publication: William Baynes, London, 1813 This is the fourth edition of this superb work first published 1743-1751. It has 108 full page portrait engravings, by Houbraken and Vertue, after various famous paintings of the subjects, ranging from Geoffrey Chaucer to Alexander Pope. The high quality of the paper stock and binding means that the plates and text are in superb condition, and the book has suffered only light wear externally. The rear endpapers are dark grey, probably contemporaneous with the binding, and the front endpapers plain white, probably original. There is very mild tanning and ink transference from plate to text apparent in the first few plates but generally the plates and text are in superb fresh condition. The binding would appear to be mid to late 19th century with a Christopher Dresser style border edging and elaborate tooled compartments. Externally there is rubbing to joints and corners, the top of the spine and tips of the corners rubbed away, but the binding and hinges and joints are sound without repair.

An account of the groundbreaking work of the Tuke family and the Society of Friends for improving the care and dignity with which mental illness was treated. At a time when the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness was often inhumane, William Tuke stepped forward in 1796 to found The Retreat. Its goal was to create safe, pleasing, and dignified conditions for those being institutionalized; and from its inauguration, The Retreat kept its doors open to public visitors who may want to witness and document the conditions of its campus and patients. In the present work, William's grandson Samuel Tuke publicizes the institution's "internal economy of management" as well as its "mild system of treatment." Transparency is key to continued progress, Tuke asserts; and he wants the Retreat's successes to assist in further advances in the field. Bernadotte, Karl Johann von
Oranienburg, 1813.
