Rare.. 8 vols, 8vo, contemporary sheep, marbled and plain green paper boards, yellow and red leather spines labels, gilt rules and lettering. A complete run of The Christian Disciple, a New England Unitarian review founded in 1813 to advocate the cause of Unitarianism and, with the outbreak of the War of 1812, peace. It founders included stalwart Unitarians Noah Worcester, Henry Ware, William Ellery Channing, and Joseph Tuckerman. In 1824 its name was changed to the Christian Examiner, and with the new name and numbering, the Christian Disciple was "almost forgotten" (Mott). However, the editors of the volume four, new series, in November 1822, published an essay by a 19-year-old Harvard Divinity School graduate that was signed with the acronym "H.O.N." 127 years later that essay was found to be the first published work of Ralph Waldo Emerson. The final initials of Emerson's name are "H.O.N." Emerson's "Thoughts on the Religion of the Middle Ages," an approximately 3,500 word essay, is a clear harbinger of the Emerson who would emerge as an influential American intellect. DUPIN, Charles
Vve Coucier & Bachelier, Paris, 1813. Demi chagrin rouge moderne. DSB [IV, p.257 : " His 'Applications de géométrie et de mécanique (1822) ' was a continuation off the 'Développements ' but placed greater stress on applications. (.) The 'Développements contains many contributions to differential geometry, notably the introduction of conjugate and asymptotic lines on a surface, the so-called indicatrix of Dupin, and "Dupin's theorem," that three families of orthogonal furfaces intersect in the lines of curvature. A particular case Dupin investigated consisted of confocal quadrics. In the ' Applications ' we find an elaboration of Monge's theory of deblais et remblais -- and, hence, of congruences of straight lines, with applications to geometrical optics. Here Dupin, improving on a theorem of Malus's (1807 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Birch
London: 1813. Title: The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, engraved by Mr. Houbraken and Mr Vertue. With their Lives and Characters by Thomas Birch, A.M. F.R.S. A New Edition. Author: Thomas Birch: Jacobus Houbraken and George Vertue (engravers) Publication: William Baynes, London, 1813 This is the fourth edition of this superb work first published 1743-1751. It has 108 full page portrait engravings, by Houbraken and Vertue, after various famous paintings of the subjects, ranging from Geoffrey Chaucer to Alexander Pope. The high quality of the paper stock and binding means that the plates and text are in superb condition, and the book has suffered only light wear externally. The rear endpapers are dark grey, probably contemporaneous with the binding, and the front endpapers plain white, probably original. There is very mild tanning and ink transference from plate to text apparent in the first few plates but generally the plates and text are in superb fresh condition. The binding would appear to be mid to late 19th century with a Christopher Dresser style border edging and elaborate tooled compartments. Externally there is rubbing to joints and corners, the top of the spine and tips of the corners rubbed away, but the binding and hinges and joints are sound without repair.

Rear board lacking, spine partially perished, label chipped, soiling to boards. Light soiling and minor foxing to text. Scarce edition of this work on diseases in cattle and horses, first published in England in 1797. Anthony Finley's imprint appears on three different editions of the work in 1813, at Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the present Albany edition. As an artifact, this book is particularly interesting for its printed label, which bears the title along with the Albany imprint of Green and Co. OCLC locates two copies of this Albany printing, at AAS and the New York Public Library, though the copy at AAS bears a different imprint line than the present volume, rendering it a variant. A rare and interesting piece of regional printing.Shaw & Shoemaker 28359 (Philadelphia edition only).

[EMERSON, RALPH WALDO].
Boston: Published by Cummings and Hilliard [&] Joseph T. Buckingham, 1813-1818 [vols 1-6]; Boston: Wells and Lilly, 1819-1823 [vols 1-5, New Series]. First edition, all published. He analyzes the "awful glories" of the Catholic Church in the 15th century, its "sanctimonious forms," the aggrandizement of the clergy, and the corruption of its wealth. The essay is filled aphoristic moral sentiments that would become characteristic of Emerson's later sermons and essays, such as "successful toil is attended by wealth, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: [Abel Lanoe] Saintin, libraire, 1813. 8vo (135 × 98 mm), pp. 79, [1] pages, 32 hand coloured engraved plates. Some spotting. Uncut in original printed drab wrappers (paper split at joints and a little frayed, but secure). First edition of this very scarce physiognomical guide to matchmaking in love and marriage. The majority of the plates are paired, and come together in a rather pleasing fashion when the book is closed. Although anonymous, the second edition (1817) bore the attribution 'Mme. de G******', attributed to Madame de Genlis in the Bn catalogue. It is very much in the style of contemporary separately-published popular publications of Lavater (some of which are advertised on the final page as the Collection Physiognomique). . , and Held Under the Sanction of the Grand Lodge of England, 1813 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The eighth and last edition of Laurence Dermott's constitutional work for the traditional Freemasons, illustrated with a frontispiece. The eighth edition of this work. Written by Laurence Dermott, an Irish Freemason who was the Worshipful Master of Lodge No. 26 in Dublin, and the Grand Secretary of the Ancient Grand Lodge of England. Dermott is best known for this work, which was originally published in 1756. Revised and corrected by Thomas Harper. Prior owner's ink inscription, and library presentation label to the front pastedown, 'Lodge of Harmony (Fareham, Hants) Library. Presented by Wor. Bro. Forbes'.
