PTOLEMY [Claude Ptolemee; Claudius Ptolemaeus] (c. 100-170 AD); DELAMBRE, Jean B. (1749-1822).
Paris: Henri Grand, 1813, 1816. Paris:: Henri Grand, 1813, 1816., 1813. 2 volumes. Tall 4to. lxxv, [1], 476, 48; [4], viii, 448, 40 pp. Engraved frontispiece, title vignettes, figs., tables, some waterstains, text unaffected. Contemporary quarter crimson blind- and gilt-stamped calf, marbled boards, marbled edges; joints show some wear, but well preserved. Library stamps on title [Bibliotheca Stephanei Halberstadensis]. Very good. First French translation of the Almagest, from the original manuscripts of the Imperial Library of Paris. Translated by l'Abbe Nicholas Halma (1755-1828), with notes by Jean Baptiste Joseph Delambre. The text is beautifully designed, laid out, and printed. This is the work that brought Ptolemy back from disfavor and with it was published the detailed scholarly study of both Halma and Delambre, making this a distinguished work of great importance. "Ptolemy Re-evaluated: One might think that Ptolemy's star would not have set never to rise again. Lalande and Delambre were authorities, and their attack was supported by an intimate study of Ptolemaic astronomy as a theoretical system. Yet their position suffered from one weakness which in the long run should undermine their conclusions. They wore the spectacles of their own century and were willing to condone the errors of Ptolemy only in so far as he could be regarded as a forerunner of one or another of the great pioneers of the astronomy of their own day. Therefore their judgement could not be final; it lasted only until historical research made it possible to see the Almagest and its author in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Birch
London: 1813. Title: The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, engraved by Mr. Houbraken and Mr Vertue. With their Lives and Characters by Thomas Birch, A.M. F.R.S. A New Edition. Author: Thomas Birch: Jacobus Houbraken and George Vertue (engravers) Publication: William Baynes, London, 1813 This is the fourth edition of this superb work first published 1743-1751. It has 108 full page portrait engravings, by Houbraken and Vertue, after various famous paintings of the subjects, ranging from Geoffrey Chaucer to Alexander Pope. The high quality of the paper stock and binding means that the plates and text are in superb condition, and the book has suffered only light wear externally. The rear endpapers are dark grey, probably contemporaneous with the binding, and the front endpapers plain white, probably original. There is very mild tanning and ink transference from plate to text apparent in the first few plates but generally the plates and text are in superb fresh condition. The binding would appear to be mid to late 19th century with a Christopher Dresser style border edging and elaborate tooled compartments. Externally there is rubbing to joints and corners, the top of the spine and tips of the corners rubbed away, but the binding and hinges and joints are sound without repair.

London: for R. Ackermann by J. Diggens, 1813. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I can provide a link to many more photos. Just ask! 1813 Scarborough Sketches 21 Color Illustrated PLATES Poems Art Humor Rowlandson A fine collection of poetical illustrations and satire The advertisement of 'Poetical Sketches of Scarborough' tells us the original 21 color plates were sketches made as souvenirs of the place during a visit to Scarborough in 1812. "They were not intended for publication, but being found to interest many persons of taste, several of whom expressed a desire to possess engravings of them, and some gentlemen having offered to add metrical illustrations to each the present form of publication has been adopted." The poems that were written to accompany the illustration were written by three separate authors. "John Buonarotti Papworth (1775-1847) wrote fourteen chapters of the Poetical Sketches of Scarborough, a light social satire illustrated with twenty-one attractive plates etched by Rowlandson after J. Green, the aquatint being added by J. Bluck and J.C. Stadler. Blake, William. Blair, Robert.
1813. London: Bensley for Ackermann, 1813 [i.e. 1870]. 4to, (2), liv, 42 pp. With a portrait frontispiece, etched title, and 11 plates all with tissue guards. Blind-stamped black cloth, rebacked with black cloth lettered in gilt,. § Third quarto edition, printed from the same plates as the 1813 edition but actually issued by or for John Camden Hotten in 1870. Of this version Essick wrote: "I've also seen the true 1813 text and plates in a very similar cloth binding with just a few differences in the blind stamping but very much the same style and period. My theory on that is that Camden Hotten, who produced the 1870 issues, not only got the copperplates from Ackermann (with the Spanish inscriptions for de Mora) but also some remainders of the impressions and letterpress and bound these up in a slightly different (just the blind stamping and perhaps the cloth color or weave) fashion. He removed the Spanish on the coppers and had an engraver restore the 1813 English inscriptions, then printed for both the portfolio and the 1870 issue of the text with the engravings... Bentley lists the 1870 issue in Blake Books, but I don't believe he lists the portfolio issue of the plates only. I have a vague recollection, however, that he did note it in one of his later checklists of publications in the Blake Quarterly." Bentley, Blake Books, 435E.

Diggens, 1813. 1813 Scarborough Sketches 21 Color Illustrated PLATES Poems Art Humor RowlandsonA fine collection of poetical illustrations and satireThe advertisement of 'Poetical Sketches of Scarborough' tells us the original 21 color plates were sketches made as souvenirs of the place during a visit to Scarborough in 1812. "They were not intended for publication, but being found to interest many persons of taste, several of whom expressed a desire to possess engravings of them, and some gentlemen having offered to add metrical illustrations to each the present form of publication has been adopted."The poems that were written to accompany the illustration were written by three separate authors. "John Buonarotti Papworth (1775-1847) wrote fourteen chapters of the Poetical Sketches of Scarborough, a light social satire illustrated with twenty-one attractive plates etched by Rowlandson after J. III: [4], 294pp. Written in 1795 as a sketch in the form of letters, titled Elinor and Marianne (representing 'sense' and 'sensibility'), the unpublished novel was rewritten in 1797 and 1798 at Steventon and altered again in preparation for the press in 1809 and 1810, the first year of Austen's residence at Chawton. Thomas Egerton published the work on commission, and Austen 'actually made a reserve from her very moderate income to meet the expected loss'. The price of the new novel was 15 shillings in boards, and advertisements first appeared for it on 30 October 1811. When it sold out in less than two years, Jane wrote delightedly to her brother Francis (3 July 1813): 'You will be glad to hear that every copy of Sense and Sensibility is sold and that it has brought me £140 beside the copyright, if that should ever be of any value'. Thom's intention was to celebrate the achievements of Captain Barclay, but in order to give Barclay's achievements greater meaning he discussed the athlete's predecessors with a diligence that provides a model for today's sports statisticians. He categorised records according to the timescale of the race: 1) matches lasting several days, 2) matches lasting one day, 3) matches completed in an hour or more, requiring stamina, and 4) matches completed in seconds or minutes, requiring sprinting skills... The publication of 'Pedestrianism' marked a new kind of public ownership of the body of the athlete. " - British Library.
