(MAURITIUS.) TEMPLE, Robert.
London: Published by W. Haines,, 1813. Landscape folio (330 x 505 mm). Recent dark red cloth portfolio, red leather patch label to front, marbled paper lining, green silk ties Engraved title page and 8 hand-colored aquatint plates by John Heaviside Clark after Richard Temple (platemark size c. 270 x 400 mm). Portfolio a little cockled in places and with light abrasions and scratches, stab-holes at extreme left margin of all leaves (where previously stitched), title page with almost imperceptible abrading at edges of plate mark, final plate with light vertical creasing across image. In excellent condition overall, with pre-publication watermarks ("J. Whatman, 1811"). First and sole edition of this superb and extremely scarce visual record of the British capture of Mauritius in 1810. The aquatinting is by the accomplished Scottish engraver John Heaviside Clark - also known as "Waterloo Clark" for his sketches made in the immediate aftermath of the battle – from on-the-spot drawings by Robert Temple, serving with the 65th Regiment of Foot. The first plate is a fine view from the deck of the transport ship Upton Castle, nicely framed by the rigging of that vessel, capturing some of the bustle of the moment, with the amphibious landing taking place and troops forming up on the beach; others show the army camping at Moulin a Poudre (with cannon being hauled up and the picturesque detail of sailors chasing a pig); and units before Port Louis under rather desultory artillery fire. The remaining images comprise serene and highly attractive views of the newly acquired British col … [Click Below for Full Description]

KOTZEBUE, August von (attributed).
39 pp.Dutch translation of an account of the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813 and the subsequent French retreat, attributed to the German dramatist and diplomat August von Kotzebue (1761-1819). Originally published anonymously as Der Rückzug der Franzosen nach der Schlacht bei Leipzig and possibly printed in Russia, the pamphlet was presented as a companion piece to an account of the French retreat from Russia in 1812 which was also translated and published by Maaskamp. With Amsterdam and most of the Netherlands abandoned by the French, the publisher Maaskamp (1769-1834) published numerous accounts of the recent events, listed on the inside of the wrapper, that had led to the French retreat all over Europe. The author of the pamphlet appears to have been a Saxon living in Leipzig as well as an enthusiastic German patriot, which seems to disqualify the attribution to Kotzebue, who was mostly pro-Russian and would ultimately be murdered for ridiculing German nationalism. Nevertheless, the author shares Kotzebue's low opinion of the French bulletins, which he portrays as full of air. With the bookplate and stamp of the Luyken family at Landfort (Megchelen). The front of the wrapper and the title page browned and foxed and the final 5 leaves and back of the wrapper with a waterstain. Otherwise in good condition.l Knuttel 23648.

STAËL-HOLSTEIN, Anne-Louise-Germaine, baronne de.
London: Printed for John Murray, 1813. First edition in English of De l’Allemagne, Madame de Staël’s great work of literary criticism (‘un des livres fondamentaux du XIXe siècle’, En français dans le texte 222), translated by Byron’s friend, the Latinist Francis Hodgson (1781–1852). The same year Murray also published the first edition in French, after the 10,000 copies of the original French version, on Napoleon’s orders, had been seized on the eve of publication in 1810. ‘All but four copies were destroyed, the type broken up, and the author was ordered to leave the country within twenty-four hours’ (Oxford Companion to French Literature). The British mania for German literature seen in the 1790s was followed by a period of relative apathy. Interest was reignited with the appearance of Madame de Staël’s book, which was ‘reviewed at length in all the leading periodicals, and attracted much attention. Carlyle [later] said: “The work indeed, with all its vagueness and short-comings must be regarded as the precursor, if not the parent, of whatever acquaintance with German literature exists among us”’ (Stockley, p. 10). Byron’s interest in German writers was aroused by de Staël’s book. This edition also provides the earliest English translation of any part of Goethe’s Faust. ‘Madame de Staël gave a résumé of “Faust” which is interspersed with a number of translated passages When her book appeared in England in 1813, these passages were naturally retranslated into English and represent, if one excepts the Cathedral Scene of Taylor [in his review of the first part of Faust for t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Extremely rare set of 6 beautifully lithographed plates showing scenes made on a journey to the Middle East to procure Arabian horses for the Royal Wuerttemberg stud farms Weil and Marbach, by Friedrich Frisch (1813-1886), court painter in Darmstadt. In 1840/41 he accompanied the Wuerttemberg chamberlain Wilhelm von Taubenheim (1805-1894), the writer Friedrich Wilhelm Hackländer (1816-1877) and the doctor Karl Bopp (1817-1847) on this journey, stopping first at Constantinople, where Sultan Abdülmecid I welcomed them. They continued to Beirut, Damascus and Jerusalem, and in Jaffa they met the Ottoman general Ibrahim Pasha. The set was originally published in two instalments and available in two issues: a deluxe issue printed with a larger tinted background with white highlights (plates 1-3) and a regular issue (plates 4-6). All views, except the first, include horses. Hackländer wrote a short text to accompany the set, but it is not included. Rowlandson, Thomas and Green, J.(illustrators).
London: R. Ackermann, 1813. 8vo in 4s, [4], xv, [1, blank], 215, [1, blank] pp. Twenty-one hand-colored aquatint plates (including frontispiece). Full crushed red morocco by Riviere, covers gilt-ruled, backstrip with five raised bands paneled in gilt, gilt dentelles, green coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Joints lightly worn, some offsetting from the plates, a very good copy. § First edition. "The originals of the plates introduced in this volume were sketches made as souvenirs of the place during a visit to Scarborough 1812. They were not intended for publication, but being found to interest many persons of taste, several of whom expressed a desire to possess engravings of them, and some gentlemen having offered to add metrical illustrations to each the present form of publication has been adopted. The several authors were not personally acquainted with each other" (Advertisement). A delightfully silly satire on fashionable life at the seaside in Regency England, perhaps better known to us today through the novels of Jane Austen. (In later years Scarborough became a favorite place of Anne Brontë who was prescribed the spa waters and sea air for her tuberculosis, and who died there in 1849.) The versified descriptions of the spa, the castle, the ball room, and sea-bathing, among other things, were here published anonymously; in the second edition the authors were identified as W. Coombe, J. B. Papworth, and F. Wrangham. "Plate 8 'The Warm Bath' is said to contain the portrait of Mrs. Robinson, George IV's mistress" (Tooley). Abbey, Scenery, 297. Tooley 422. MILBURN, William.
[6], 586 pp.Second edition of a rare work on the practicalities of naval commerce between Britain and the coastal societies east of Africa, edited and in some parts also expanded by Thomas Thornton from Milburn's 1813 two-volume edition. It includes a substantial section on the coasts of Arabia and the Gulf: "Ras el Khima" (“the capital of the Pirate Coast, ... stands on a sandy peninsula ... There are several castles, one of which is the residence of their chief"); "Bahreen Islands" ("Manama ... is large and populous, the buildings are well constructed, and the appearance of it more decent than any in the Gulph ... The Saikh of Bahreen refuses to acknowledge the supremacy of Persia, and suffers none of the coin in the islans to bear the titles of the Persian Sovereign"), "El Katif" ("is said to be a good harbour, and a place of trade, but is seldom visited by Europeans"), etc. Kuwait was named "Grane" then, and Milburn, a sea captain serving the East India Company, writes a lengthy section on articles procurable in the Gulf, ranging from arsenic and lapis lazuli to pearls ("the oyster banks have from 15 to 30 feet water on them ... The pearls produced here are not so much esteemed in Europe as those of Ceylon, having a yellowish hue; but the natives of India prefer them. They say they always retain their original colour: whereas the white will in a few years become darker, from the heat of the weather, and that of the person wearing them").Binding rubbed; extremities with some wear. [1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], 32 pp. Dutch translation of a Russian account of the retreat of Napoleons Grande Armée from Russia in 1812. Probably originally written in German, this account was published in numerous versions in 1813 and 1814. Starting with the Moscow fire of September 1812, the account contrasts a chaotic French retreat with a well-planned combination of tactical retreat and pursuit by the Russians. Most of the account describes Russian victories over the French, with particular praise for Field Marshall Kutuzov, and the final part describes the horrors of the crossing of the Berezina and the final struggle to reach Prussian territory.A final passage probably unique to this Dutch edition draws an interesting contrast between the French bulletins presenting all activities in Russia as grand victories (when they were, in fact, disastarous) and the constant truthfulness of Russian accounts. The account ends with a list of 43 French generals now in Russian custody. With Amsterdam and most of the Netherlands abandoned by the French, the publisher Maaskamp (1769-1834) published numerous accounts of the recent events that had led to the French retreat all over Europe. Although sometimes attributed to the German dramatist and diplomat August von Kotzebue (1761-1816), the account was probably written by the Prussian Ernst von Pfuel (1779-1866) who served in the Russian army. With small fragments o … [Click Below for Full Description]

EAST INDIA COMPANY. Great Britain. Parliament.
London: George Eyre and Andrew Strahan, 1813. Folio (12.5 inches). 53 George III, Chapter 155. Caption title, pages 1121-1174. Woodcut Royal coat of arms. Neatly extracted from a bound volume and expertly mended. Untrimmed. The East India Company Charter Renewal Act, 1813 asserted the sovereignty of the British Crown over the Indian territories held by the Company, and renewed its charter for another 20 years, but deprived the company of its trade monopoly (except for tea and trade with China) and required the company to maintain separate and distinct commercial and territorial accounts. It also opened India to missionaries. The East India Company, originally founded as the Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies, was a British joint-stock company created in 1600 by Royal Charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I to a group of wealthy London merchants and aristocrats for pursuit of the spice trade with the East Indies. For the first dozen years, each trading voyage was treated separately with its own subscribers or stock-holders, then switched to temporary joint stocks, and finally to permanent joint stocks in 1657. In 1708, the Company merged with some competing English investors and merchants to form the United Company of Merchants of England Trading to the East Indies. The Company focused its efforts on the Indian subcontinent, northwest frontier province, and the Balochistan region, and traded mainly in cotton, silk, indigo dye, salt, saltpetre, tea, and opium. As the British government did not own any shares in the Company, it had little say … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rowlandson, Thomas and Green, J.(illustrators).
1813. Tooley 422. SMITH, John Prince (c.1774-1882)
London: Longman, 1813. [Economics] FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. lii; 496. Original tan calf with raised bands to spine, gilt rules, red title label. Spotting to prelims and preface, otherwise contents clean. Binding lightly rubbed, crown of spine worn, tear to rear joint at head and tail. Overall an attractive copy of a particularly rare text, missing from many important Economics libraries; no copies have been recorded sold at auction and a survey of specialist booksellers' catalogues has been fruitless. Seven copies are held at UK institutions (BL, Birmingham, Cambridge, Edinburgh, London, LSE and Sheffield) and just two further copies worldwide (Tokyo and Wyoming). Smith was editor of the Law Journal in London and was counsel for Daniel Isaac Eaton who published Thomas Paine's Age of Reason. His magnum opus 'The Science of Money' appeared in 1813 and in 1817 he was appointed second fiscal officer in the sugar-trade colony of Demerara-Essequibo (British Guiana). Formerly a Dutch territory, the local currency remained the Guilder, despite British control. Smith was accompanied to the Caribbean by his daughter and son, John Prince Smith (jr.,1809-1874), later a political economist and free trade liberal. Smith senior died in Demerara the year before the mass slave rebellion occurred. Bloy, Marjorie. Biographical Dictionary of British Economists. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

London: Published by W. Haines, 1813. The remaining images comprise serene and highly attractive vi … [Click Below for Full Description]

In-plano (40.5 x 58 cm), hardcover, complete works, pagination as follows: Introduction (XIII pp.), Explanations of paintings of Greek vases (84 pp.) General table of contents (VIII pp.) boards A, B and C, then the LX boards. In this collection, what strikes the amateur is the quality of the engravings, as well as that of the drawings made by Greek artists !!! Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres will notice the beauty of the Greek vases published by Tischbein, de Millin and James Millingen (1774-1845). Pascale Picard-Cajan discovered the layers of Ingres and "was able to establish that Ingres had transferred almost all the plates of vases by Tischbein, Millin and James Millingen (1774-1845), thus allowing him to study the principles of general composition and attitudes of each figure and to reuse certain patterns for his own works. " In 'Perspective - News in art history', Hildegard Wiegel. The vases are classified in this magnificent work by period (according to Winckelmann's broad divisions) and reproduced with unprecedented care and fidelity; they "are the first [prints] on which missing and restored portions are indicated" (Dietrich von Bothmer). The unsigned plaques are credited in the text to the designer Michele Steurnal (Steurnel), porcelain painter at the Real Fabbrica in Naples, and to the prolific reproductive engraver Francesco Giangiacomo. "Most of the drawings were made by Mr. Michel Steurnal, in Naples, and the engravings by Mr. Giangiacomo in Rome" (p.xii). Robert B. Campfield (b. 1770) was an early and important Newark coachmaker, at a time when there were few American coachmakers, since the best vehicles were imported from Europe. (There were plenty of wagon makers.) Campfield pioneered in setting up a one-stop carriage-making shop--body, wheels, painting, trim, etc, all carried out under one roof. Around 1860, when he was in his nineties and long retired, he was described as "the oldest practical coachmaker living." [Attributes: First Edition]

RANNEY, William Tylee
New York: J.M. Emerson & Co. Engraving. Measures 21 5/8" x 26 3/8". Scuffs along margins and expert long repair lower right.Artist William T. Ranney (1813-1857) was a prominent painter in the mid-19th century, known for his sporting scenes and Revolutionary War depictions. Influenced by his military experience with the Texan Army, his work differed from many New York artists as it reflected his enthusiasm for Western themes. He painted many scenes from hunting on the marshes near his home and studio in West Hoboken, NJ (present-day Union City). This painting, originally titled "The Last Bullet" and then "The Last Shot", was a great success for Ranney, and was purchased by the Western-Art Union of Cincinnati in 1850 and selected for engraved prints to be distributed to members. The engraving was done by T. Dwight Booth. The scene, with two riders, speaks to the American frontier and the dynamism of the wild west.
