Commentaries on the Laws of England [Four Volumes]

Isaiah Thomas. Hardcover. Worcester, 1790. First Worcester edition and second American (first complete American) edition. 8vo, full contemporary calf, 485 + 520 + 455 + 443 pp. With an engraved portrait in Volume I and the engraved Table of Consanguinity and the Table of Descents (folding plate) in Volume II. A very scarce early American edition, with no copies in worldcat (only the eBook version is listed). This edition was preceded only by the first English edition and the first American edition of 1771-1772, which was not complete. A good set with very good contents in unrestored original bindings. Front board detached from first volume, some chipping to spines and soiling to boards. We have chosen to leave these in their unrestored state (and they are quite usable now, protected in heavy mylar). They could easily be restored or rebound. Please contact us for additional pictures or information. Harvard Law Catalogue I, 188. Sweet & Maxwell, 29. Evans 22265. . Good. 1790. Second Edition.

        A Narrative of the Mutiny on Board His Majesty's Ship Bounty;

London: George Nicol,, 1790. and the Subsequent Voyage of Part of the Crew, in the Ship's Boat, From Tofoa, one of the Friendly Islands, To Timor, a Dutch Settlement in the East Indies. Quarto (288 × 231 mm). Contemporary full sprinkled calf, rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands to spine, red morocco label, floral decorations to compartments gilt, double frames to boards gilt, floral rolls along edges of boards in blind. With the engraved folding plan "A Copy of the Draught from which the Bounty's Launch was built" by Mackenzie, and 3 engraved folding charts by J. Walker after W. Harrison. Boards a bit scuffed and soiled, title page and folding plan lightly stained, occasional spotting to margins of text block. Otherwise an excellent copy. First edition of Bligh's (1754-1817) personal account of "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history" (Hill) published two years before his full official version of the voyage and the mutiny in an effort to influence opinion in his favour, absolving him "from any blame that might be levelled against him because of the incident". HMS Bounty left Spithead on 23 December 1787 with Bligh as captain, accompanied by a 44 men strong crew, two botanists, David Nelson and William Brown, and a diarist, James Morrison. The aim was to sail for the Pacific, collect saplings of the breadfruit tree and other plants, and transport these to the West Indies. The intention was to introduce the Pacific plants into the local fauna, allowing them to "become cheap staples for the slaves" (ODNB), and by extension making low-cost, large-scale cotton cultivation in the area possible. Bligh reached Tahiti on 26 October 1788; after more than five months, the Bounty sailed for the West Indies laden with "more than 1,000 young breadfruit plants". On 28 April, after a few weeks at sea, Fletcher Christian, the master's mate, led parts of the crew in mutiny and commandeered the Bounty, setting Bligh and 18 loyal crewmen adrift in a 23-foot long launch. Despite being given little in terms of navigational tools, Bligh reached Coupang on 14 June 1789, after a 3,500 mile long voyage. During this 'hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it — an extraordinary feat of seamanship' (Wantrup). Despite the film-fuelled condescension of posterity, it should be remembered that Bligh's skill as a navigator, perhaps second only to Cook of his time, and his courage as a seaman, ensured his continued employment by the Admiralty, led to his election to the Royal Society, and to his appointment as governor of New South Wales.

Nineteenth-century Needlework Sampler with a reference to Botany Bay

England: late nineteenth century. Cross-stitch needlework design on canvas, 480 x 610 mm., the canvas a little browned yet in overall very good condition. "To become a new people at Botany Bay" A charming and accomplished needlework sampler, and evidence of the hold that the notion of Botany Bay had on popular folklore and culture: the poem embroidered here is first recorded in a very rare broadside of circa 1790, described by Ferguson as a 'somewhat ribald poem' on the subject of transportation (see Ferguson 77). Made with a large cross-stitch, the bright colours and interesting geometric patterns of this sampler mark it out as an attractive and rather large example of the art, with no fewer than four running alphabets within the pattern. Of great interest is the verse which is included, surely a rare example of a popular song which expresses relief about transportation, unlike the more common laments. The verse reads in full: Let us drink a good health To our schemers above, Who at length have contrived From this land to remove Thieves robbers and villains They'll send 'em away To become a new people At Botany Bay. The Victorian period saw the continuing development of the art of needlework, and such decorative pieces became a staple of the handicrafts of the period. Commonly utilising religious verses or homilies, the present example is certainly unusual in its adoption of popular song.

Reflections on the Revolution in France

The Price of RevolutionBURKE, Edmund. Reflections on the Revolution in France, and on the Proceedings in Certain Societies in London Relative to That Event. In a Letter Intended to Have Been Sent to a Gentleman in Paris. London: Printed for J. Dodsley, 1790.First edition (Todd's second edition, first impression) of Burkeís controversial attack on the French Revolution. Octavo. iv, 356 pp.Mid-nineteenth-century half brown calf over blue marbled boards. Gilt spine with raised bands and red morocco label. Edges sprinkled red. A little minor soiling. Ink annotation on p. 275. A very good, crisp copy.ìIn 1789 a common perception of the French Revolution was that a freedom and potential stability might ensue similar to that which had been achieved by war in the American Revolution. Burke was swift to point out the essential differences in the two movements: the American colonists had fought to preserve basic English liberties and institutions; the French revolutionaries wished not only to smash and eradicate the monarchy but to obliterate the most basic traditionsî (Christie's New York, May 17, 1996, lot 8). ìAs the Terror grew, Burke seemed almost to be a prophet. In the eternal debate between the ideal and the practical, the latter had never had a more powerful or moving advocate, nor one whose own ideals were higherî (Printing and the Mind of Man).Published on 1 November 1790, Burkeís Reflections achieved immediate success. This copy is the second (published ca. 2 November 1790) of a number of impressions printed within days of each other, with only slight variations. Todd calls this the second edition, first impression (ìThough in part identical with a, this may properly be called a new edition, since it is substantially of a new settingî).Grolier, 100 English, 63.         The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay

London: Stockdale, 1790. Octavo, portrait frontispiece, engraved title-page & eighteen plates (many folding), folding table; occasional touches of browning and offsetting, but a handsome copy in contemporary polished calf, neatly rebacked with original flat spine gilt laid down. Octavo edition of the account of Governor Phillip. An attractive copy of the rather scarce "third edition" of Phillip's account, the first in the smaller octavo format. In a disarming "advertisement" to this edition the publisher Stockdale commented that this was the ideal book for those "deterred by the expence of the Quarto", but which includes "as many plates… as could by any means be allowed at so inferior a price…". This edition does include both the frontispiece portrait of Phillip and the famous chart "Sketch of Sydney Cove, Port Jackson", based on the original map by William Dawes and John Hunter. Only a handful of natural history plates are included, but there is a goodly number of the scenes of Aboriginal life. Interestingly, the only newly engraved plate in this edition is the title-page, all of the others being the original plates with their 1789 dates. The text is unabridged but entirely reset for this smaller format. The third edition is a difficult work to find in good condition.

The Geological Age of Reptiles," (American Journal of Science and the Arts 21 pp. 359-364, 1831)

Gideon Mantell (1790-1852) was an English obstetrician, geologist and paleontologist best known for his discovery of the first dinosaur ever to be described properly -- a momentous event" (DSB, 87). In "The Geological Age of Reptiles," Mantell is responding to a paper by Cuvier postulating a four-stage sequence of life on earth, the age of reptiles being first. In it, Mantell writes "The earth was people by oviparous quadrupeds of a most appalling magnitude, and reptiles were the 'Lords of the Creation,' before the existence of the human race." ALSO includes Samuel Guthrie's landmark paper on the discovery of Chloroform and Nicholas Hentz's seminal work on spiders which formed "the basis of the study of American arachnology.". CONDITION & DETAILS: New Haven: Converse. Complete volume. 8vo. (8.5 x 5.5 inches, 213 x 138mm). 3 unrelated plates. Bound in black buckram. Ex-libris with marks at spine neatly blacked. Small ex-libris stamps on the first few pages. Tightly, solidly, and cleanly bound. Lightly toned interior; small crease down one page. Clean throughout. Very good condition.

Modern Voyages: Containing a Variety of useful and entertaining Facts... Also, the latest authentic Accounts from Botany Bay... For the amusement and instruction of youth of both sexes

Dublin: Chamberlaine and Rice, P. Wogan and others, 1790. Two volumes, with both half-titles; a handsome set in contemporary mottled calf, flat spines gilt and with double red and green morocco labels. Rare poetic epitaph for Captain Cook. A fine and attractively bound set of voyages collected and edited for the enlightenment of younger readers. Pacific voyagers, including Dampier, Anson, Wallis and Carteret feature heavily in the narratives, while no fewer than four chapters are devoted to the discoveries of Captain Cook. Significantly one chapter includes a plea for a public monument to Cook's memory including a rhyming epitaph of ten lines proposed by the editor Reverend John Adams, who humbly prefaces his composition with this disclaimer 'the following epitaph is laid before the public, in hopes that a perusal of it may incite some gentleman of superior genius to produce something better on the subject and more worthy of that celebrated character…'. Of particular note given the 1790 date of publication, Adams' work also includes thirteen short entries on the newly established penal colony at Botany Bay. These short and enticing articles are edited and simplified from the official account of Governor Arthur Phillip published in London the previous year; they include descriptions of the Aborigines of Port Jackson, early attempts at agriculture and the soil and climate of the colony. Interestingly, the journal narratives of Lieutenant Watts of the convict transport Lady Penrhyn and of Captain Marshall of the Scarborough are included in simplified form. The natural history of New South Wales features in two entries, one on a peculiar shark and another on a dingo sent as a gift from Governor Phillip to Mr. Nepean in England, and now in the possession of the Marchioness of Salisbury at Hatfield House. The handsome features and ferocity of the dingo are admired though it is noted that 'it is scarcely to be expected that this elegant animal will ever become familiar.' First published in London in 1790 by Kearsley, this Dublin imprint is of some rarity: Beddie was able to locate only one copy, in the State Library of Victoria; Forbes located just three other copies, including one in the Mitchell Library.

The 1775 edition encompassed the majority of the known world.         Black Monday or the Departure for School

Published by William Redmore Bigg, London 1790 - Colour printed mezzotint. In good condition apart from some neat repairs in the margins. A beautiful mezzotint after the pretty genre painting by William Redmore Bigg. William Redmore Bigg gained a reputation as an excellent genre painter, the moral messages and pretty appearance of his accomplished paintings made them extremely popular in their day and anticipated the Victorian age to come. In subject and style Bigg echoed the work of his master Edward Penny, who also specialized in painting genre scenes with moral overtones. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, and proved a continued source of inspiration for contemporary engravers. Bigg remains one of the most celebrated English genre painters, whose picturesque characterizations express the sentiment and taste of his age. This engraving is a wonderful example of Bigg's work. A family prepares to bid farewell to the two sons who are leaving for boarding school. The elder son, clearly a seasoned campaigner, is confident and almost appears eager to get back to school and see his friends again. The younger son however is leaving home for the first time and is being comforted ineffectually by his mother who tries to hold back her tears. His two sisters also try and comfort him, the younger offers a cake and a basket of apples as a parting gift. This pretty print is a companion picture to Bigg's painting 'Dulce Domum or the Return from School'.

Gay, Bibl. de l'Afrique et de l'Arabie 3118; cf. Mendelssohn I, p. 889 (4to ed. of 1790); Rookmaker, pp. 177-271. First edition (in octavo: a quarto edition appeared simultaneously) of Le Vaillant's account of his first expedition into the interior of South Africa. Le Vaillant (1753-1824) embarked on a first excursion on 18 December 1781, advancing as far as the Great Fish River. After returning to Cape Town, he undertook a second excursion during which he travelled beyond the Orange River. His engaging narrative of the expedition contains valuable ornithological information and interesting notes on the peoples he encountered, including the Khoikhoi ("Hottentots") and the Xhosas. Plate VII, a portrait of a naked "Hottentote" woman that was later suppressed, is present here and the censors have not tampered with it. The octavo edition is typographically superior to the quarto edition. In very good condition. The bindings are also very good, with only minor signs of wear. A landmark voyage to the South African interior, with 7 iconic costume portraits of indigenous Africans, coloured by hand.

Géographie des Grecs analysée ; ou les systêmes d'Eratosthenes, de Strabon et de Ptolémée comparés entre eux et avec nos connoissances modernes

Didot l'aîné, Paris 1790 - Quarto, with ten folding engraved maps; a very good copy in later half red grained morocco. Ancient Greek geographers. An analysis of the geographical knowledge of the ancient Greeks undertaken by Gossellin for a contest set by the French Academie Royale des Inscriptions. The ten folding maps are particularly interesting for comparing and contrasting the geographical ideas of the major ancient geographers including especially Erastothenes, Strabo and Ptolemy. They figure the Mediterranean and the classical world but extend as far east as the Indian sub-continent and the Indian Ocean, with the final map showing the East Indies as far south as the Nicobar Islands. On the basis of this work Gossellin was admitted into the Academie Royale des Inscriptions in 1791; in 1795 it was renamed and subsumed along with the other learned societies, including the main French Academy itself, into the Institut de France. Over subsequent decades the academies would reconstitute themselves but remained under the umbrella of the Institut de France. Gossellin was thus at an early age a member of the most august body in his subject, and in the full French Institute itself. His first work was followed by a wider-ranging four-volume study (see below); the two together constitute his major contribution to the subject.

Neptune raising Capt. Cook up to Immortality

London: J. Cooke, circa, 1790. Engraving, 355 x 220 mm.; in an attractive early dusky pink mount, which obscures the very extremities of the image; framed. Cook raised to the gods. Rare engraving of a theatrical set-piece in which the great navigator is raised up to immortality from Kealakekua Bay, the scene of his death. This is an eccentric component of the Cook canon, and of especial interest as showing the enormous esteem in which he was held after his death. Images such as this 'illustrate the florid style and romantic spirit of the time, and the reverence paid to Cook by artists of the era' (Kaeppler, Artificial Curiosities). The more realistic portrayals were followed by an equally important and revealing series of images which depicted Cook being elevated aloft. The most famous of these is Loutherbourg's 1785 engraving "Apotheosis", based on the stage setting to the pantomime Omai, which finished with a painting of Cook being carried aloft by Britannia and Fame. Neagle's image, which shows a rather stout Cook being elevated, clearly borrows its structure from Loutherbourg, but is almost certainly newly designed for one of the popular successes of 1789, "The Death of Captain Cook: a grand serious-pantomimic-ballet, in three parts. As now exhibiting in Paris with uncommon applause with the original French music, new scenery, machinery, and other decorations". This pantomime was based on a slightly earlier production by Arnauld. Johann Heinrich Ramberg was a well-known history painter and theatre designer who spent his youth in England, and is thought to have studied with Bartolozzi and Sir Joshua Reynolds. James Neagle was one of the foremost engravers of his generation, specialising in book illustration. There has been some confusion about the exact dating of this print, with both Nan Kivell and Beddie giving erroneous details. It was first issued as the frontispiece to the Reverend Thomas Bankes, New, Royal, Authentic and Complete System of Universal Geography (London, probably 1790).

Der Zug der Aurora, nach Guido Reni

Wedgwood Creamware Jug bearing 'A Map of the World from the Latest Discoveries'

Staffordshire: Wedgwood, circa, 1790. Ceramic creamware jug with world map printed on two sides, stands 186mm tall with a diameter of 90mm; spout has been abraded, small hairline crack to the rim, generally in very good condition. The map on a milkjug. Charming late 18th-century Wedgwood printed jug displaying a world map which includes recent discoveries in the Pacific and east coast of Australia. The jug was clearly produced after the third voyage of Captain Cook as the Hawaiian islands are marked on the map, which features Australia divided into New Holland and New South Wales, the latter still connected to Van Diemen's Land. An imaginary southern land is partially depicted as an incomplete island named 'Terra Australis' southwest of the Cape of Good Hope and directly south of Tristan de Cunha. New Zealand is depicted with the Cook Strait clearly marked, as are many of the smaller Polynesian groups such as Tahiti and the Solomon Islands. Both hemispheres of the world are adorned with allegorical neoclassical figures in dramatic poses including a New World Indian in the southern hemisphere, an African figure with resting lion and an Oriental maiden flanked by a camel. Wedgwood creamware was produced in Staffordshire from the mid-eighteenth century onwards and after slow acceptance by the market eventually became a huge commercial success for the firm. The map is a double-hemisphere type in a style typical of the end of the century as exemplified by Samuel Dunn's world map of 1787 or the map engraved by James Lumsden in 1785. This rare Wedgwood jug reflects the curiosity of late eighteenth-century Europeans for voyages of discovery at a time when the last remaining geographical mysteries were finally being resolved. It is a delightful record of contemporary discoveries in the Pacific and on the east coast of Australia.

An Arabian belonging to Lord Grosvenor

Published by Robert Sayer, London 1790 - A magnificent portrait of Lord Grosvenor's celebrated Arabian horse, by the master equine painter George Stubbs. George Stubbs is considered one of the greatest English painters. His ingenious animal and sporting pictures remain unrivalled in their passionate depiction of emotion and their commitment to naturalistic observation. Stubbs was briefly apprenticed to the painter Hamlet Winstanley, a relationship that quickly ended, leaving the young artist to his own tuition. In contrast to contemporary academic theory, Stubbs' attached great importance to the belief that art should imitate nature, not the work of other artists. He spent years carefully studying human and equine anatomy so that he could truthfully represent natural form and movement. A result of this study was his famous 'Anatomy of the Horse', which details, with beautiful engraving, the various elements of a horse's anatomy, from skeletal form to muscular definition. Continuing in search on innovation, Stubbs began experimenting with a myriad of different mediums, becoming accomplished in both enamels and printmaking. Through arduous application, he became a talented mezzotint engraver and worked with ease in both soft ground, and etching techniques. Stubbs' masterful paintings inspired some of the greatest engravers of the day to reproduce his work for publication. Stubbs was elected director of the Society of Artists and a Royal Academician, and today his prized paintings are housed in some of the finest museums in the world. Stubbs was often commissioned to paint accurate portraits of specific mares for proud aristocratic patrons, who wished to highlight their horses' racing success. This practice is expertly exemplified in this magnificent print. The Arabian horse in this print belonged to the first Lord Grosvenor, one of Stubbs' earliest and most important patrons. Lord Grosvenor had two passions, horse racing and collecting paintings; by glorifying one passion he was able to indulge the other. In this clever work Stubbs made the Arabian horse the clear center of attention, even the groom is made to appear secondary to the horse. The artist's anatomical knowledge is displayed in the musculature of the horse's legs and shoulders and by the veins on the muzzle and right hind leg. Lennox-Boyd, George Stubbs 21, vi/viii; Gilbey, Life of George Stubbs no.28; Siltzer, The Story of British Sporting Prints p.270. Colour printed mezzotint with additional hand-colouring. State vi/viii, with the publication line altered to: ' Printed for ROBERT SAYER Map & Printseller, No. 53 Fleet Street, London'.
