[Knox, William] / [McNally, Leonard / United Irishmen] / [Warner William Westenra, 2nd Baron Rossmore].
London, J.Debrett, 1789. 8°. 49, [1], 14, [2], 174 [2] pages plus Errata-leaf. Original Hardcover. Contemporary Irish calf with edges stained green. Neatly rebacked. Gilt ornaments on spine with beautiful original spinelabel. In overall excellent condition. This thoughtful work on Irish politics and history was written by an Irish-born government official, and subsequently owned by two significant figures in Irish history, both of whom have left their mark on it. The first was the spy and co-founder of the United Irishmen, Leonard Macnally who has signed and annotated the text, followed by Warner William Westenra second Baron Rossmore who has left his notes and jottings on the Act of Union. [SABIN 38181] The title page bears the ownership signature of Leonard Macnally who signs himself ‚Leo: MacNally' with the name of the anonymous author ‚[William] Knox' written in his hand below. Macnally, a barrister and playwright, is now remembered as a notorious spy for the British government, exploiting his status as a co-founder of the United Irishmen to betray friends and republican clients such as Wolfe Tone even as he purported to defend them in the court cases that followed the rebellion of 1798. In addition to his ownership signature MacNally has lightly annotated Knox's Appendix which contains a ‚Paper delivered to Lord Frederick Campbell, when appointed Secretary to Ireland, 1767' in which the author addresses the ‚tyranny' of aristocratic government in Ireland, lamenting the ‚wretched... ancient condition of Ireland... in respect to property' ownership. MacNally's interest … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: George Goulding, 1789. Second Edition. Leather bound. 8 5/8 X 11 Inches. 360 PP + 47 PP Appendix. Very Good. Item #2775 "Good reading and...an excellent authority for the early days of fur trading on the northwest coast" (Streeter). Stated "Second Edition" copy with ALL 22 folding maps and illustrations intact. Recent leather rebacking over period leather boards. Hand-tooled dentelle board edges. AEG. Retains title-page and often missing half title-page. This copy also retains the original "Instructions to the Binder" page detailing the placement of the maps and illustrations. The binder of this particular copy chose to ignore the suggested placements, but all of the illustrations are in fact bound in in locations chosen by the binder. A binding rebellion if you will... Occasional foxing and offsetting to boards and pages. A very nice copy in a strong binding. Boards are a bit scuffed as shown. George Dixon (1748 - 11 November 1795) was an English sea captain, explorer, and maritime fur trader. He served under Captain Cook in his third voyage, on HMS Resolution, as armourer. In the course of the voyage he learned about the commercial possibilities along the North West Coast of America. History has not served Dixon well; for he is the least known of those who served and or were taught by Captain Cook and is only rarely mentioned in history books. When he is mentioned, he is relegated to a minor figure, overshadowed by the more dramatic figures of Cook and William Bligh, another officer on Cook's ill-fated third trip. NOVEL. [RADCLIFFE (Ann)]
London: Printed for T. Hookman, 1789. First edition, 12mo (175 x 105 mm), [4], 280 + 12pp., publisher's catalogue and advertisement, with half-title, a faint dampstain is visible on several leaves on lower blank margin just touching text but unobtrusive, recently finely bound in a cont. style full calf, spine gilt, red morocco label. Ann Radcliffe 1764-1823 is considered as one of the founders of Gothic literature, this, her first novel, is set in Scotland in the Middle Ages. "Even in her first novel, Mrs. Radcliffe began to realize that the great Gothic castle with its hidden chambers and eerie aliveness would become her most important character. The sublime obscurity and remote horrors concealed in the dark terrain surrounding the two castles of Athlyn and Dunbayne also take precedence over the characters and become Gothic personalities in their own right in Mrs. Radcliffe's first Gothic. All her subsequent Gothic romances are lyric rather than dramatic in their mounting evocations of terror."—Frank. The 8 page publisher's catalogue and at the rear is separately paginated and is entitled 'Books printed for T. Hookham, New Bond-Street,' it lists some 54 titles, mostly novels. This is followed by a 4 pages advertising 'Hookham's Circulating Library.' SIEYES (Emmanuel-Joseph)]
S.l., 1789. Goldsmiths'-Kress, n°14063. Martin & Walter, IV, 31629). DES POMMELLES, Jean-Christophe Sandrier.)
Paris: (no printer,) 1789. Quarto (261 x 210 mm). Entirely uncut, stab-stitched in a sheet of blank paper, preserved in a custom made chemise and slipcase. Lower edge a little gnawed, stitching broken but volume still intact; a very good copy. With a large folding table. First edition of one of the major demography monographs of eighteenth-century France. Des Pommelles' principal work, the Tableau de la population de toutes les provinces de France appeared in the same year as his Observations sur le recrutement et l'emplacement de l'armée active par cantons ou par départements. Its in-depth analysis of population figures, meticulously gathered and studied with a method which the author describes as "algebraic", had been prompted by the need to foresee the potential number of army recruits nationwide. Des Pommelles' interest was in calculating the numbers available to serve in the Milices, military forces for the defense of France. This led him to attempt an assessment of the total population of the country. He compares his own results with those of Necker, Moheau, and d'Expilly. A lengthy commentary on the table gives his methods of calculation, and details of the various factors which influence the level of population. Goldsmiths' 13816; INED 1396; McCulloch, p. 264. King George III. (George William Frederick)
1789. Rare autograph letter signed by King George III regarding the payment of the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards. Signed "George R" in the upper left corner of the document. The letter is addressed to Councillors Dudley Ryder and Thomas Steele, joint Paymaster Generals of the Guards, Garrisons and Land Forces of the United Kingdom and notifies the recipients of the arrival of "the sum of twenty-six thousand and fifty four pounds.to be due to our Royal Regiment of Horse Guards for their pay from 25th December 1789 to 25th December 1790." In near fine condition. George III was King of Great Britain and King of Ireland from 1760 until the union of the two countries in 1801, after which he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death in 1820. His life and reign, which were longer than those of any of his predecessors, were marked by a series of military conflicts involving his kingdoms including the defeat of France in the Seven Years' War early in his reign which made Britain the dominant power in North American and India. Many of Britain's colonies were soon lost, however, in the American Revolutionary War. Further wars against revolutionary and Napoleonic France from 1793 concluded in the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

(DES POMMELLES, Jean-Christophe Sandrier.)
Paris: (no printer,), 1789. Quarto (261 x 210 mm). Entirely uncut, stab-stitched in a sheet of blank paper, preserved in a custom made chemise and slipcase. With a large folding table. Lower edge a little gnawed, stitching broken but volume still intact; a very good copy. A lengthy commentary on the table gives his methods of calculation, and details of the various factors which influence … [Click Below for Full Description]

COOK, James.) KIPPIS, Andrew.
Paris: Hôtel de Thou, 1789. 2 volumes, octavo (197 x 122 mm). Early 19th century green quarter roan, smooth spines divided by single gilt fillets and blind bands, gilt lettered and numbered direct, green "Papier Croisé" marbled sides, vellum corner tips, speckled edges, "Schrottel pattern" marbled endpapers. A few light abrasions to spines, a couple of sections toned. A very good set, with the half-titles and terminal blank in vol. I. Woodcut title vignettes of a rustic scene, head and tail-pieces. First edition in French - following the London edition of 1788 - of the standard contemporary life of Cook by "the leading biographer of his day" (ODNB), the Presbyterian minister Andrew Kippis (1725-1795), who drew on Admiralty documents and sources as well as information supplied by Cook's widow and Sir Joseph Banks. A quarto edition appeared simultaneously and the bibliography is complicated by the fact that issues of both formats appear with and without the translator's name on the title and an additional Lyons imprint (as given by Forbes). The present set carries the "approbation & privilège du Roi" on vol. II title and collates, vol. I: [iv], [i]-xlviiii (Castéra's "Lettre du traducteur"), [xlix]-lvi (preface), [1]-458; vol. II: [iv], [1]-499, i. The absence from the title pages of the translator's name may indicate that this is a first issue. The translation was by the diplomat Jean-Henri Castéra (1749-1838), who acted as an unofficial ambassador for Louis XVI, and later turned-down an offer from Napoleon to chronicle his Egyptian campaign. Giovanni Maria CASSINI (1745 - 1824)
Uncommon maps, published in the 'Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale', with a decorative title cartouche, by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a Somasco monk. He was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives - he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good condition.

MADISON, JAMES; VINING, JOHN; et al.
New York: John Fenno, 1789. First edition. THE FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DRAFT OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS. "The newly constituted government assembled in New York in April 1789. As everyone expected, [James] Madison immediately assumed a leading role in the First Federal Congress. He drafted Washington's inaugural address, prepared the reply of the House of Representatives, and helped defeat proposals to address the president as 'highness'--important contributions to the early effort to define the protocol between the branches and to set the democratic tone he wanted for the new regime... Most importantly of all, he drafted the constitutional amendments that became the Bill of Rights. "Through much of 1788, while the adoption of the Constitution was in doubt, Madison had disapproved of the demand for these amendments. He argued that the powers of the federal government were limited to matters that did not involve the fundamental rights protected by the constitutions of the states. He warned that an insistence on a federal bill of rights might threaten the essential liberties that its proponents wanted to protect; an inadvertent error or omission could become the basis for a claim to powers not intended by the Constitution. At the Virginia state convention, nonetheless, the Federalists were forced to promise that amendments would be added once the Constitution was approved; and Madison repeated this commitment during his campaign for a position in the House" (American National Biography). On June 8, 1789, Madison took a giant step towards fulfilling his commitment to the amendments whe … [Click Below for Full Description]

STERLING, Joseph.
London: Printed for G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1789. 8vo (165 × 96 mm), pp. vii, [3], 232, complete with the half-title and errata leaf; modern half calf. First London edition. Joseph Sterling, Irish poet, graduated from Trinity College Dublin 1767. According to the preface most of these poems first appeared in Dublin some years earlier (the Dublin edition was of 1782). The poems had been attacked by Murray's Review for October 1787 and this London edition was published so that interested readers might judge the criticism for themselves. The critic had apparently permitted himself some disparaging remarks about Irish poetry in general; the short preface discussing the criticism ends with a warning to him: 'As a friend, I would advise him never to go to Ireland: there he will meet with no mercy...' The major poem of the collection is the Chaucerian continuation, 'Cambuscan, or the Squire's Tale', which the Monthly Reivew praised as being superior to the continuation by Edmund Spenser, noting 'animation and magnificence' among its virtues. Jackson, p. 151; O'Donoghue p. 438. ESTC: BL, Bodley, Rylands, McGill, Rice, State University of NY and a privately-owned copy (UK).

By John Gough Quakers, also called Friends, are a historically Christian group of religious movements formally known as the Religious Society of Friends, Society of Friends or Friends Church. In the past, Quakers were known for their use of thee as an ordinary pronoun, refusal to participate in war, plain dress, refusal to swear oaths, opposition to slavery, and teetotalism.[18] Some Quakers founded banks and financial institutions, including Barclays, Lloyds, and Friends Provident; manufacturing companies, including shoe retailer C. & J. KEATE, George.
London, G. Nicol, 1789.4to. Contemporary tree calf, spine richly gilt with red morocco title-label. With folding engraved chart (with small tear) and 16 engraved portraits and plates (some foxing). XXVIII,378 pp.First edition published in London in 1788. - In 1783 the East India Packet Antelope under command of Henry Wilson, ran onto a reef near one of the Palau Islands, a previously unexplored group, and was wrecked. The crew reached shore and were well treated by the natives. From the wreck they built a small boat which they managed to get to Macao, taking with them Prince Lee Boo, the son of king Abba Thule. Lee Boo soon died of smallpox in England. Captain Wilson allowed Keate (1729-97) to write a faithful account of the events from Wilson's journals and communications. This account did much to reinforce the idea of the noble savage and it is one of the most popular 18th century books on the Pacific and also the main source of early knowledge of the Palau Islands, the most western group of the Caroline archipelago. Includes a vocabulary of the Pelew language. - A fine copy.Hill 907; Huntress 107C. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
