1789. A perspective view of the city of Venice - Vue Perspective de la Ville de Venise (Venedig) Es handelt sich hierbei um eine originale, kolorierte Kupferstich-Ansicht der Stadt Venedig von Daumont aus dem Jahr 1789. Titel: A perspective view of the city of Venice - Vue Perspective de la Ville de Venise Gebiet bzw. Ort: Venedig Kartograph: Daumont, Paris Jahr: 1789 Größe des Plattenbereichs: 32 cm x 47 cm Technik: Kupferstich Zustand (Perfekt/ Sehr gut/ Gut/ Ordentlich/ Mäßig/ Schlecht): In gutem Erhaltungszustand. Selten. English description: A rare and very decorative view of Venice. This genuine copper engraving shows Venice from the laguna with many ships and vessels in the foreground. The engraving was published by Daumont in Paris in 1789. It measures 32 x 47 cm (platemark) and is in good condition. There is some light browning due to it's age. Based on the manuscript caption "Venetien" in pen and ink in lower margin one can assume that it was once used for viewing on a fair or market. - - - International buyers welcome. JUDICIARY ACT, U.S. SENATE DRAFT
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Packet, and Daily Advertiser. Newspaper, June 29, 1789 (No. 3248). Philadelphia: John Dunlap and David C. Claypoole. 4 pp., 11 3/8 x 18 1/4 in. "the supreme court of the United States shall consist of a chief justice and five associate justices.and shall hold annually at the seat of the federal government two sessions."The U.S. Constitution provided that the "judicial power of the United States, shall be vested in one supreme Court, and such inferior Courts," leaving to Congress to establish the details. The Judiciary Act erected a three-tiered federal court system-the Supreme Court, the Courts of Appeals, and the District Courts-essentially the system in place today. The foremost issue was the relative power and authority to be respectively accorded the federal and state courts. The Judiciary Act's most controversial provision empowered the Supreme Court to hear, at its discretion, appeals of verdicts reached in the state courts whenever those decisions were deemed to raise questions of constitutionality of state or federal laws. "the supreme court of the United States shall consist of a chief justice and five associate justices.and shall hold annually at the seat of the federal government two sessions." (p2/c1) [expanded in 1802 to 7 and in 1837 to 9 justices]"the United States shall be, and they are hereby divided into eleven districts. the before-mentioned district shall be divided into three circuits, and be called the eastern, the middle, and the southern circuit.and that there shall be held annually in each district two co … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lavater, John Casper.
1789. London: J. Johnson, 1789. Small 8vo, viii, 224 pages. With a frontispiece engraved by Blake after Fuseli. Contemporary calf, red morocco label, a little rubbed along the upper joint, generally a very good copy. Neat ink inscription on a front blank and ink signature of the period on the title-page "Mich Kearney". § Second edition (first printed in 1788), first state of the plate. The frontispiece is after a drawing by Fuseli (see Essick, Blake and His Contemporaries..., 43 for the original drawing) and is a powerful image. The text notes "End of Vol. I" but no further volumes appeared as a fire destroyed Lavater's manuscript at the printer. The Huntington Library has Blake's own copy, extensively annotated throughout. Bentley, Blake Books, 480. Essick and Easson 2, XXXII, 1c. Essick, William Blake's Commercial Book Illustrations, XVIII. kearney might well be the scholar mentioned in DNB: "Kearney published Lectures Concerning History (1776), a slender work but clear and stimulating, and contributed two papers to the Transactions of the Royal Irish Academy, the first on the origins of the alphabet, the second on Sir Joshua Reynolds's Discourses. He also contributed some notes to Edmond Malone's edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson. He died in Dublin on 11 January 1814, and was buried in St Ann's, Dublin. His obituary notice in the Gentleman's Magazine unusually suggests that he was a very talented man who had failed to fulfil expectations. KIPPIS, Andrew.
Vie du Capitaine Cook, traduite de l'Anglois ...Paris, [Charles-Joseph Panckouck], 1789. 4to. With 2 extra-added portraits of James Cook, one (bound in) by Klauber after Dance ("proefdruk"), dated 1793, engraved for Pasteur's 13-volume Dutch edition of Cook's voyages; and the other (loosely inserted) by Strunck, engraved for the second edition of Reis naar de Zuidpool (1793), a Dutch translation of Cook's second voyage. Contemporary mottled sheepskin, gold-tooled spine. [4], XXXII, 546, [2] pp. First French edition of the first biography of James Cook, "which, despite its many disappointing aspects, should be included in any comprehensive collection" (Davidson). The present copy is in the rarer of two simultaneous issues, without the translator's name on the title-page (this issue not recorded in the literature, though in some descriptions the issue remains ambiguous). Kippis first published his biography in London in 1788 as The life of Captain James Cook. Although it contains some significant errors and is primarily concerned with Cook's naval career, it provides a valuable account of his three voyages, remaining the standard biography until Young's Life and voyages of Captain James Cook (1836). IKippis derived his account of Cook's death at Kealakekua Bay from Samwell's Narrative of the death of Captain James Cook (1786). The appendix contains Helen Maria Williams's ode to Tahiti, "the Morai".The present copy is enhanced with two portraits of Cook, engraved soon after the book's publication. With an occasional minor spot and in the second half an unobtrusive small worm h … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEATE, George.
Beschryving van de Pelew Eilanden ...Rotterdam, Gerard Abraham Arrenberg, 1789. 4to. With 8 plates: 4 mixed technique (partly stipple-engraved) portraits, 1 large folding engraved map of the Palau Islands and western equatorial Pacific, and 3 folding engraved views. Contemporary boards. XXXII, 365, [1] pp. First Dutch translation of one of the most popular 18th-century books on the Pacific, and the main source of early knowledge of the Pelew or Palau Islands in Micronesia, first published in London as An account of the Pelew Islands (1788). In 1773, the Antelope under command of Captain Henry Wilson was shipwrecked near one of the Palau Islands, a previously unexplored group. The crew managed to reach shore, where they were well treated by the natives. They built a small boat from the wreck, in which they reached Macao. They took Lee Boo, the son of Abba Thulle, King of the Palau Islands, with them to England where he made a very good impression. Unfortunately, he soon died of smallpox. The map covers from the equator to 24°N latitude and from 110 to 159°E longitude (from Borneo and the south coast of China in the west to the western Caroline Islands). With a minor stain in the front endpapers, slightly affecting the margin of the first portrait, but not approaching the image. The publisher's letterpress spine label was probably printed on the otherwise blank 2Z4, which has therefore been removed. Fine untrimmed copy with many bolts unopened. Binding rubbed and spine-label torn. Cat. NHSM p. 233; Cox II, p. 302; not in Tiele, Bibl.

Henri Decremps (1746-1826), a Parisian lawyer and amateur conjuror, sought to unmask Giovanni Giuseppe Pinetti, the most celebrated magician of the 18th century. Pinetti had gained fame as a flamboyant performer, but Decremps considered him a charlatan who cheated people for personal profit. In the first volume Decremps unveils several of his most famous tricks, including one named "Theophrastus Paracelsus", involving a pigeon supposedly being beheaded, a mechanical singing bird, an automaton chess-player and a dancing egg that jumps out of a hat. The frontispiece in vol. 1 shows the magician throwing a deck of cards in the air and nailing shooting a card with a pistol. As a reaction to Decremps's attack Pinetti published his own instruction book, Physical amusements, and prepared a new show. London: Printed by T. Bensley, 1789. First edition, 4to, (vi), 468, (12) pp, bound without the final errata leaf. Folding frontispiece, trimmed to the top edge, two engraved fly titles and 6 plates, armorial bookplate of Edward [Harbord], Lord Suffield, radical politician and anti-slavery campaigner, to paste down. Contemporary tree calf, subtle repairs to joints, gilt decorated spine with an armorial tool, green morocco labels. One of the landmarks of British natural history. ".nobody has managed to rival the grace and ease of White's writing. In a measure this success must be attributed to his style and personality. Central to this last is a modest acceptance that some aspects of the natural scene are beyond understanding. [Boston: Castle William.] Massachusetts Magazine.
From the May, 1789 issue of The Massachusetts Magazine. Castle William's heritage as a military installation dates to 1634 when cannons first were deployed in an earthen fort to defend Boston Harbor. British officials used the fort as a refuge in the tumultuous times leading up to the American Revolution; on their way out of Boston in March, 1776, the British destroyed the Fort. It was quickly rebuilt by Bostonians. The present view shows the rebuilt Fort with an oversized American flag waving above. The Fort served as an active military installation during the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II. Known as Fort Independence since 1797, the Fort today is a state park. Stauffer attributes the engraving to Samuel Hill, who did many of the plates for the Massachusetts Magazine. Uncommon. Quarto (10 1/4" x 8") bound in contemporary quarter leather with green leather label to spine in gilt over calf-backed boards. (Sabin 11723; Howegego C87) First edition. Joseph-Bernard de Chabert de Cogolin followed family tradition when he entered the navy as a midshipman in July 1741. After several voyages in the Mediterranean, where he displayed an interest in science and a talent for drawing charts that brought him to the attention of the minister of Marine, he was appointed sub-section leader of midshipmen and posted to Brest. In 1746 he made two voyages to reconnoiter the coasts of Acadia and correct the defectiveness of French charts. While in the frigate Castor he drew a chart of the roads and harbor of the Baie de Chibouctou (Halifax harbor), and later the same year he was sent in the Sirène to reconnoiter the harbor at Annapolis Royal and spy out the British ships anchored there. The next spring he joined Jacques-Pierre de Taffanel de La Jonquière's squadron in the Gloire and was taken prisoner by the British during the battle off Cape Ortegal, Spain. After repatriation Chabert was promoted ensign in April 1748 and retained in Paris by the minister, who wanted him to learn astronomy in order to instruct naval officers. Two years later he was chosen to go to Île Royale (Cape Breton Island) and continue his survey of the shores of Acadia. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Cassini G. M.
