Prima edizione. [CB].

Raro. Cfr.          The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay; with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island; compiled from Authentic Papers, which have been obtained from the several Departments, to which are added, The Journals of Lieuts. Shortland, Watts, Ball, & Capt. Marshall; with an Account of their New Discoveries..

London: John Stockdale, 1789. An exceptionally clean copy in fine condition.. Quarto, portrait and engraved title, seven folding engraved charts and 46 engraved plates; bound with the final leaf of advertisements; second state of the title-page, with a single name on the medallion; page 122 with the uncorrected mis-numbering 221, with the early 'Wulpine' state of the 'Vulpine Opossum' plate at p. 150, early state of the 'Kangooroo' plate at p. 106 (later changed to 'Kanguroo'); a fine copy in a very good modern binding (probably by Aquarius) of half calf and marbled boards, spine ornately panelled in gilt with crimson leather label. A handsome copy of the first edition: the foundation book of European settlement in Australia.Based on the governor's journals and despatches and assembled into book form by the London publisher Stockdale, this is - as the official account of the first settlement - the single most important book to describe the journey to Botany Bay and the foundations of modern Australia. It describes the events from March 1787, just before the First Fleet sailed from the Isle of Wight, up to September 1788. There is a chapter dealing with the fauna of New South Wales, appendices detailing the routes of various ships to Botany Bay, from Botany Bay to Norfolk Island and from Port Jackson to various other ports, and finally a list of convicts sent to New South Wales. The book also contains some excellent maps by John Hunter and William Dawes, including the first of the Sydney Cove settlement, which shows in detail the buildings and "progress" which had been made by July 1788.Davidson summarises the importance of this volume: 'Being the authentic record of first settlement the work's importance cannot be over-emphasised, and no collection [of Australiana] can be complete without a copy', and Wantrup notes that 'as a detailed and officially sanctioned account of the new colony, the first edition of Stockdale's Phillip is a key work and essential to any serious collection of Australian books'. Provenance: Private collection (Sydney).

         Examen du Gouvernement D'Angleterre,

1789. [STEVENS, JOHN]. Paris: Chez Froulle, 1789. viii, 291 p. Modern French leather-backed marbled boards. Small early repair to bottom edge of title page, else a near-fine, wide-margined copy. The greatly enlarged first French edition of one of the earliest works on the Constitution, originally published in New York in 1787. Attributed by Sabin, Evans, and most other bibliographers (except Howes) to William Livingston, the work was actually written by Livingston's friend John Stevens (1749-1838), best known as a leading early American engineer and pioneer in the field of steamboat and railroad transportation. In the Stevens papers is a draft of the work in Stevens's hand, a receipt from the New York printer for printing 500 copies, and several letters of Stevens referring to the essay. Largely unappreciated in America, Stevens's work was a great success in France. The original 56-page pamphlet was turned into a 291-page book with notes by Dupont, Condorcet, and Mazzei. There is much comment on John Adams's recently published Defense of the Constitutions. Howes S-968; Felcone, New Jersey Books, 254.

         John Hancock

January 6, 1789. Broadside: Commonwealth of Massachusetts, one page, 12.5" x 9.25", signed "John Hancock" twice in print, January 6, 1789, Boston: printed by Adams and Nourse, embossed state seal affixed at upper left. Completed in manuscript and signed twice by John Avery, as Secretary.Light folds, otherwise fine.In part: "…in the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to will and require you, forthwith, in manner as the law directs for calling Town-Meetings, to cause the freeholders and other inhabitants…to assemble on Thursday the twenty-ninth of January current, to give in the votes for a Representative…to represent the said district in the Congress of the United States…"With a certification stating that Nathaniel Gorham and Elbridge Gerry have received the greatest number of votes in the said district. Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress was a unicameral body in which each state was equally represented, and in which each state had a veto over most action. States could, and did, ignore what did pass. The ineffectiveness of the federal government under the Articles led Congress to summon the Convention of 1787. One of the most divisive issues facing the Convention was the structure of Congress. James Madison's Virginia Plan called for a bicameral Congress; the lower house would be elected directly by the people, and the upper house would be elected by the lower house. The plan drew the support of delegates from large states such as Virginia, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, as it called for representation based on population. The smaller states, however, favored the New Jersey Plan, which called for a unicameral Congress with equal representation for the states. Eventually, a compromise, known as the Connecticut Compromise or the Great Compromise was reached; one house of Congress (the House of Representatives) would provide proportional representation, whereas the other (the Senate) would provide equal representation. To preserve further the authority of the states, the compromise proposed that state legislatures, rather than the people, would elect senators. The Constitution was ratified by the end of 1788, and its full implementation was set for March 4, 1789.

Autograph letter in ink, signed ‘G.Casanova’ addressed to his benefactor and fellow freemason, Count Ottaviano Antonio di Collalto.

Dated: Dux, 2 March 1789, (reply received 9 March 1789). - 3 pages in 4to. Writing 4 months before the outbreak of the French Revolution from his home at Dux in Bohemia, Casanova warmly thanks an aristocratic benefactor for his letter of 14 February, addressing him as ‘Excellenza mio adorato Padrone’ (Excellency my adored master) ‘Your gentle and generous heart dictates to your happy pen everything that can be read in your writing, by which you can only notice sentiments of truth and of virtue May God repay you for the kindness you have shown me, and preserve your good health for a long time as for the advantage of your illustrious family and also to give me, in case of need, new token of your grace and of your protection’. He refers to Collalto’s sad news that prince Karl von Li[e] chtenstein (n.1) was dying, ‘ but it was also welcomed because over here he was thought dead, and [instead] as long as there is breath there is hope’; Casanova comments on social events ‘ Now the Carnival is over and so are the balls and the nice court assemblies, to which Your Excellency deservingly took part ’ A correspondent of mine from Venice tells me that the Doge (n.2) is dying, and that according to the public opinion the ducal horn will be appointed to His Excellency the Procurator Memmo (n.3), but the same [correspondent] also tells me that he has no money, and that he is quarrelling with the Martinenghis, who claim from him 145.000 ducati for works carried out in the palace at S. Marmola which he gave as a dowry to his daughter I am told that in Vienna the Venetian minister will be a patrician with a noble title, but I do not know who he will be.’ The last paragraph contains an extended reference to [Lorenzo] da Ponte, Mozart’s librettist: ‘I was told that the Italian music was dismissed. I am wondering if the abbé da Ponte (n.4) will stay. He doesn’t write to me anymore. He is angry with me because I didn’t praise his poems. He who flatters is not a friend ’ (1) Karl Joseph Prince of Liechtenstein (1730-89) , Austrian general; (2) Doge Paolo Renier (1779-89) was actually succeeded by Ludovico Manin (1789-97), the last doge; (3) Andrea Memmo (1729-93) Proculator of St Mark’s, architectural theorist, was in financial difficulties when he left his palace to his daughter as a dowry to the Martinenghi family; (4) Lorenzo da Ponte (1749-1838), born as Emanuele Conigliano, a converted Venetian Jew, was a gifted opera librettist, poet and priest, who wrote the libretti for Mozart’s three most famous operas: Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro & Cosi fan tutte; he made his career as librettist to the Italian opera in Vienna under the patronage of the Emperor Joseph II, but lost his post under the new Emperor Leopold; he had met Casanova in October 1787; both men had been expelled from Venice and had a tempestuous relationship (da Ponte was critical of Casanova in his memoirs); after a spell in London, da Ponte emigrated to New York, where he produced the first full performance of Don Giovanni, and founded the New York Opera Company in 1836, the predecessor of the New York Metropolitan Opera House. Traces of ink oxidization throughout, otherwise in very good condition. Autograph letters by Casanova of this length and interest are rarely offered for sale.

It was intended as a collaboration between bookseller and binder; a celebration of what we stand for as booksellers and our ongoing relationship with the skill and artistry of modern bookbinding. Charles has worked with us over decades; his dedication to traditional processes and forms mirrors our passion for books in their original state. The bindings offered here are thus a true collaboration of our ideals. The original intention was to bind one book; a worn copy of Don Juan seemed the perfect choice. So when two books arrived we, as booksellers, were presented with a dilemma. Only loosely connected through their content, they are, as Charles explains below, inextricably linked; by touch and by sight, they belong together in their physical form. The question is: should they be sold individually or as a pair? There is no correct answer so we give you the opportunity to do either although priority will be given to anyone wishing to keep the two volumes together.Ed Nassau Lake FROM THE BINDER: These two books, Bodoni's printing of Tasso's Aminta and the first form of Byron's Don Juan, both of importance in their own right, are loosely connected as publications. Byron was an admirer of the sixteenth century Italian poet and wrote a poem The Lament of Tasso which narrates the poet's seven years in the madhouse of St Anna. In the second stanza of Childe Harold, 4th canto, Byron writes: 'In Venice, Tasso's echoes are no more, And silent rows the songless gondolier, Her palaces are crumbling to the shore, And music meets not always now the ear …' Their relationship as publications may be tangential but the two volumes are dynamically linked by their physical form. They tell a story and articulate significant stages in the evolution of a book from printed page to fine binding. They illustrate how a book functions as an object; how, in each case, and differently, appearance and mechanics reflect each other. The Don Juan was a plainly printed publication, slightly haphazardly folded and loosely sewn into original paper covered boards, as close to a primary state as an English binding of that period could get. Bodoni's Aminta was a different and more sophisticated production, that of the first 'modern' typographer, ornately bound - pressed, rounded, cut, with solid gilt edges, the remnants of fine gilt tooling. All books produced in Britain in the eighteenth or nineteenth century fall into one or other of these categories - or start in one and end up in the other. The original bindings on these two volumes were damaged and had failed, a reflection of the weakness of the materials as much as the construction. My intention in these new bindings was to produce something simultaneously modern and antique. And, within the context of a contemporary approach to conservation, to use structure and materials to evoke the similarities and the differences of their earlier states. With a similar intention, over the last few years I have made a number of bindings thematically linked through the use of archival polyester both as a support to a sewn structure attached to boards, and as a translucent covering material, lined with eighteenth century tissue paper, sometimes coloured. All bindings start with sewing. Both of these books originally had a weakened sewing structure, each thread passing through more than one folded section, and hence incompletely through each - for reasons of economy, and also in the case of the Bodoni to control the gentle curve of the spine. The sewing was attached to cords and the cords to the boards of the binding, roughly in the one case, strong and neatly in the other. The spine of the Bodoni was reinforced with successive glued linings to provide some strength and define the shape, but in the case of the Don Juan, there was only one lining, since it was intended as a temporary binding with a semi flat spine. Best conservation practice today accentuates the sewing and avoids the use of glue. Both new bindings are sewn continuously with a single thread passing inside and out and over the polyester support. A weakly lined spine tends to become concave over time. James Brockman's pioneering use of structures based on this concave shape in the 1990s opened a whole new area, and I used similar techniques in a number of editions for the printer and book artist, Ken Campbell. The Don Juan utilises a concave shape. The book opens easily, and the spine hardly flexes at all. The default position of the original binding is articulated in the new, but the latter is far stronger and more sound. The Bodoni uses the same sewing structure, but here the polyester is lined to preserve the grander convex shape of the original. The polyester has the huge advantage that it has a marvellous memory - unlike, for instance, vellum, it flexes and returns to its original shape seemingly indefinitely. In both bindings, the polyester on the spine is covered with gold leaf fixed with thin Japanese tissue. In the case of the Bodoni, the book is for once truly ALL edges gilt. The Caplain gold on the Don Juan reflects the more modest tone of the original. In both books a secondary sewing connects the primary threads in a kind of interlace (with a precedent in Coptic bindings) to the boards. The light laminated paper boards are covered with an eighteenth century tissue lined with polyester, a translucent layer, white to reflect the gilt of the Bodoni, blue-washed as the original paper in the Don Juan. In these various ways, the two books and their bindings are connected. There is an evolution from the looser, more natural state of the one - its uncut, unpressed leaves, unsupported spine, the muted colours of the covering - to the more formal refinement of the other, with its tighter control of shape and the decorative elegance of its use of gilt. This was inherent in the original, and is built upon in the new, bindings. Charles Gledhill
