Dominique Vivant Denon (Chalon-sur-Saône 1747 - Parigi 1825)
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Gospels, Bohemian / Czech]
Litomysl: Vaclav Vojtech Turecek, 1789. Fair. 16mo in 8's. 110 x 80 mm. A-Z, Aa-Ff8 (lacking title-page A1, S3-8, Dd-Ff8) = 209 ff. Text in Bohemian / Czech. Contains 65 in-text woodcuts measuring an average of approx. 43 x 67 mm. Bound in contemporary Bohemian dark calf, blind tooled with lines cross-wise to form a central "x", triple line in blind near spine with single line in blind to complete the border on both covers, textblock detached to reveal original sewing structure, worn leather with worn and buffed edges, large split in raised spine near upper cover, original pin attached, clasp lacking. Textblock edges painted red, now darkened, waterstained along bottom and fore-edge, small partially erased figure in faint pencil, some annotations, pages very worn and browned, fol. A7 chipped along fore-edge affecting legibilty of text, small hole on fol. J8. Armorial bookplate of I.G. Schorsch on front pastedown (see below). A rare Czech liturgical book printed in an obscure Bohemian town. This volume, while worn and partially incomplete, is unsophisticated and offers first-hand study of provincial Bohemian book arts which remain little known outside Czechoslovakia: there are 65 woodcuts herein, none of which are repeated; furthermore, the binding structure is completely visible. The woodcuts are unsigned (though the online Czech Encyclopedia suggests that the printer, Vaclav, may have been personally responsible) and certainly warrant further study. The printer of our text, Vaclav Vojtech Turecek (d. 1822), founded an important printing house in the middle of nowhere: … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York: Hodge, Allen and Campbell, 1789. First Edition. 12mo. [64], 348, 148, [4] pp. COMPLETE with the "Heidelbergh" (i.e. Heidelberg) Catechism, and the 4-page publisher's advertisement at end. In our copy gathering Hh (the Index) is bound following the A2. Contemporary American binding (New York City or Dutchess County, NY?): full red morocco, four raised bands on spine, covers gilt with the name of the first owner SARAH FRELIGH (see below), comb-marbled endpapers. Preserved in a cloth case. Outstanding copy in a contemporary American red morocco binding, and with a noteworthy provenance, of the first appearance of "Amazing Grace" in an American hymnbook. This hymn is a source of incalculable inspiration and hope which continues to the present day. Its international influence is attested by the fact that it has been translated into more than 50 languages, more than any other hymn in the world. The influence of "Amazing Grace" on American gospel music cannot be overestimated. Although the words were written by Englishman John Newton, they were largely ignored in England for decades. In the early 19th century, the hymn was embraced by the faithful in the United States, particularly in the South.Reading this extraordinary hymn in its original Colonial context almost moves us to feelings of patriotism, sentiments we do not often experience nowadays. "Amazing Grace" here appears under its earliest title "Life Everlasting" (Hymn 22 Part II, pp. 287-288) and transports us to a very different time indeed. It is likely that our copy cannot be exceeded in terms of quality, pres … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEWIS, L.)
T. Hookham, T. & J. Egerton, J. Evans, & W. Richardson. 1789. 2 vols in 1. Half titles. [v], 10-194pp; [v], 6-208pp. 8vo. Ink stains on pp 98-99 not affecting text. Contemp. continental calf, spine tooled in gilt, large black morocco label; sl. rubbed, small repair to upper corner of front board. A nice copy in an unusual late 18th-century continental binding. ESTC T64738, BL only in British Isles; Indiana University and Newberry only in USA. Lewis writes in his introduction that in his opinion 'one of the greatest blessings, which an individual can enjoy, by means of letters to be acquainted with not only the occupations and pursuits of his countrymen, but without stepping beyond the boundaries of his parlour, to know the chain of events that command the attention of mankind, and the secret convulsions and stratagems of the most distant enterprizes in the world.' He sets out to transport his readers in just such a way, but despite his lofty ambitions for this novel, it was not particularly well reviewed; one critic in The Monthly Review lamented that 'the author sometimes attempts to soar into the heaven of sentiment: but his pinions are weak, and he presently falls to the ground.' KEATE, George.
1789. Paris, Le Jay and Maradan, 1788. 4to. Contemporary full calf, spine ornamented in gilt and with gilt-stamped lettering-piece; pp. xiv, [2], 384, aquatint portrait, engraved folding map ranging from the South China Sea and Borneo to the Carolines, and 15 mostly folding plates with tissue guards; wear to extremities but firm; several plates with marginal traces of humidity, otherwise clean and fresh. First French edition, published in the same year as the English edition. In the same year appeared a two-volume French edition in 8vo. In 1783 the Antelope, commanded by Capt. Henry Wilson, ran onto a reef near one of the Palau Islands, a previously unexplored group, and was wrecked. The entire crew managed to get safely ashore, where they were well treated by the natives and eventually managed to build a small vessel from the wreck, in which they reached Macao. They took Prince Lee Boo, one of King Abba Thulle's sons, with them to England, where he made a very good impression; he unfortunately soon died of smallpox. Keate, a literary man, composed the account from journals and communications of Capt. Wilson and some of the officers. Among the crew on board the Antelope was the eminent artist Arthur William Devis, who contributed two portraits, that of the king of Pelew and of one of his wives. He had been injured during a Papuan attack prior to the ship being wrecked. Wilson returned with the first collection of Palau artifacts to reach the West, and his illustrated travelogue fitted well in with the concept of the 'noble savage'. Roger de Rabutin, comte de Bussy, dit BUSSY-RABUTIN et Gatien COURTILZ DE SANDRAS HISTOIRE AMOUREUSE DES GAULES, PAR LE COMTE DE BUSSI RABUTIN (sic). Nouvelle édition, soigneusement revue & corrigée. A Londres [Paris, J.-Fr. Portlock and Dixon
London: Printed for John Stockdale - and George Goulding, 1789. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good / No Jacket. A contemporary abridged edition of the principal account of the first commercial voyage to the Northwest Coast and the first English voyage to visit Hawaii after that of Captain James Cook. Contains a large map bound in the front. Front free endpaper is detached, foxing throughout. A very rare abridgement of the classic book. In September 1785 Portlock and Dixon sailed from England. Portlock was in command of the larger vessel, the 320 ton (BOM) King George, with a crew of 59. Dixon's was in command of the 200 ton (BOM) Queen Charlotte, with a crew of 33. Dixon and Portlock sailed together for most of their three year voyage. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean, reaching the Falkland Islands in January 1786, and transited Cape Horn to enter the Pacific Ocean. They reached the Hawaiian islands on 24 May and anchored in Kealakekua Bay (where Cook had been killed in 1779), but did not go ashore. They took on fresh food at other Hawaiian islands and proceeded on to what is now Alaska. After two years of plying the waters, Portlock and Dixon departed North America, reaching Macao in November 1788. On their return Portlock and Dixon published an account of the voyage, based in part on letters written by William Beresford, the trader on the expedition. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition]

London, J. Wallis, 1789. Contemporary colour with some retouching. 410 x 1040mm. Repairs to folds. A reduced version of one of the earliest plans of London ever produced, tentatively attributed to Agas. The style is much the same as Braun & Hogenberg, with buildings shown in profile but, as St Paul's Cathedral is depicted without the spire that had been destroyed by lightning in 1561, this plan must be later. London Bridge has buildings on it and the Globe and the Bull-Baiting Ring can be seen on the south side of the Thames.

Third edition, published a year after the first; Keate adds a note to the introduction, commenting on the public's favourable reaction and that the book's main attraction is its portrait of Lee Boo, "[which] unequivocally proves, that a picture of Human Nature, distinguished only by virtuous simplicity, hath been able, in an age of the most polished refinement, to attract so much the attention of the Public". London: T. & T. Payne [imprint to p. 319: typis Jacksonianis excudebant J. Sammells & M. Ritchie], 1789. Octavo (236 x 142 mm). Early 19th-century blue morocco, spine lettered and richly gilt to compartments direct, gilt foliate borders to covers, gilt beaded turn-ins, pink endpapers, gilt edges, pink silk page marker. Light insect damage at head of front hinge, a few pages unopened, otherwise with very little wear. A lovely copy, wide-margined and tall, clean and fresh. First edition of Sallust published under the editorship of the classical scholar Henry Homer (1753–1791), a desirable edition in any form, here in a handsome early binding and in remarkable condition. Dibdin commended this edition: "A beautiful and correct book. The text is given with the same purity as are those of Caesar, Livy, and Pliny, by the same excellent scholar. It contains an index of the various readings according to Havercamp's edition. 'This edition', says a learned correspondent [uncited], 'is absolutely immaculate; so are all Homer's editions; the accuracy of the editor was wonderful'" (Thomas Frognall Dibdin, An Introduction to the. Greek and Latin Classics, 1827, vol. II, p. 388). ESTC T135043. [Attributes: First Edition]

Grose, Francis; Burns, Robert
London: S.Hooper, 1789 Signed binding by J.Wright, with gold decorations and inner gilt dentelles. Magnificent two volume folio set, illustrated by the draughtsman Francis Grose (1731 - 1791), depicting medieval ruins of Scotland, with accompanying history. Grose's first success in publishing was "The Antiquities of England and Wales" (1772 - 1776). He was traveling Scotland for the sequel, when he met the poet Robert Burns, who suggested that he include Alloway Kirk in his Scottish books. Grose agreed, on the proviso that Burns supply him with written material to accompany the illustration. Burns agreed and gave Grose a prose version of what would become one his most famous poems, "Tam O'Shanter". This tale is a kind of Scottish "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", in which the protagonist, after a late night at the pub, comes across a witches' revelry at the local haunted church. Tam shouts out "Weel done, cutty-sark" at one of the witches ("cutty-sark" means "short shirt"...), whereupon the revelry comes to a sudden halt and the witches come after Tam. He escapes on his horse, Meg, to the bridge over the River Doon (the "Brig O'Doon"), where the witches are forced to give up the chase as they are unable to cross the running water, and they are only able to grab at him in frustration and succed in pulling off the poor horse's tail. Condition: About Very Good, with wear to the hinges and to the edges of the covers. Library plate of Grove City College to front pastedown. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good-. Illus. by Grose, Francis.
