New Jersey: 1791. » . Edmund Burke / Joseph Priestley / Thomas Paine
Printed for J. Dodsley, 1791. Full Leather. Second Edition, First Impression. A collection of three reactions to the French Revolution by English-speaking writers, together in one volume: the Second Issue of Burke's defining Reflections on the Revolution in France; the Second Edition of a response by Joseph Priestley, the chemist, theologian, co-founder of Unitarianism, and political theorist; and the Fifth London Edition of Thomas Paine's monumental Rights of Man, "the textbook of radical thought" (PMM 241). "In the eternal debate between the ideal and the practical, the latter had never had a more powerful or moving advocate, nor one whose own ideals were higher" than Burke. He "expressed in a single work all the reactions of horror and dismay with which the liberal-minded who had hailed its beginning now felt for the French revolutionaries. Paine's 'answer to Mr. Burke's attack' took the argument to a higher level. With a force and clarity unequaled even by Burke, Paine laid down those principles of fundamental human rights which must stand, no matter what excesses are committed to obtain them." (PMM 239; 241). This being the second issue of Burke's Reflections, called by Todd the 'second edition, first impression' (53b). The second edition, first impression was "an unlabeled reprint of approximately 2000 copies [...] Though in part identical with a, this may properly be called a new edition, since it is substantially of a new setting." General title leaf imprint from series t.p., pages [1269]-1296. Woodcut Royal coat of arms, headpiece ornament, and decorative initial. Text in black letter. Neatly extracted from a bound volume and expertly mended. Very good. TPL 629 The bill was introduced in the House of Commons by William Pitt in March of 1791. The act was passed by the British Parliament on June 10, 1791, and was to take effect on December 26, 1791. This was a first step towards Canadian Confederation. The Constitutional Act also called Canada Act, reformed the government of the Province of Quebec from what had been outlined by the Quebec Act in 1774 to accommodate the influx of 10,000+ English-speaking Empire Loyalists that had fled the United States after the American Revolution to settle and develop the country west of the Ottawa River. These new settlers weren't happy living under French law and the Roman Catholic church. They wanted to hold their lands outright, not as part of the seigneurial system and they wanted privileges for their Protestant churches similar to those granted to Roman Catholics. Also they were used to having democratic institutions like an elected Assembly to give them a say in how they were governed. The ACT divided Quebec into two provinces: the predominantly English-speaking western region of Upper Canada and the eastern French-speaking region of Lower Canada. [LA PEROUSE] ASSEMBLÉE NATIONALE.
Paris: l'Imprimerie Royale, 1791. Quarto, 4 pp., uncut and unbound as issued; in fine condition. The search for La Pérouse was initiated with this French National Assembly decree, in response to a petition from the Société d'Histoire Naturelle. As well as this original Paris printing there were simultaneous issues of the decree in Valenciennes, Pau, Orleans, Grenoble and Auxerre. These printings are all rare today, the original Paris version especially so. Not known to Ferguson; the Ferguson Addenda (106a) adds the Auxerre imprint of this edict by reference to a copy recorded by the California bibliographer Edward Allen in his La Pérouse "Check List" of 1941. McLaren, who notes Pau, Auxerre and Valenciennes printings, all from copies held in Australian libraries, could cite this original Paris edition only by reference to Du Rietz's cataloguing of a copy in the Kroepelien collection in Oslo.In this, the first of two La Pérouse decrees issued in 1791, France formally acknowledged her fears for the loss of the expedition. The two ships had last made contact from the east coast of Australia, which they reached a mere six days after the First Fleet. Two years after this the mystery ran so deep that it has been said that Louis XVI was still asking for news on his way to the scaffold. The decree resulted immediately in D'Entrecasteaux's voyage. Such is this document's importance that it was reprinted at the start of the official account of the La Pérouse voyage where it stood as both an invitation for continued search efforts, and an implicit elegy for France's greatest explorer. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Bewick, 1753-1828, was an English wood engraver and ornithologist. Bewick showed, at a very early age, a talent for drawing. He had no lessons in art. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. In 1775 he received a premium from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. In 1776 he became a partner in Beilby's workshop. A General History of Quadrupeds first appeared in 1790. The Quadrupeds deals with mammals of the whole world, and is particularly thorough on some of the domestic animals. It includes bats and seals but does not include whales or dolphins. Bewick was helped by his intimate knowledge of the habits of animals acquired during his constant excursions into the country. Bewick's art is considered the pinnacle of its medium. This is likely due to his methods: Bewick, unlike his predecessors, would carve in harder woods, notably box … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLACKSTONE, William
London: A. Strahan and W. Woodfall, Law-Printers, 1791. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "All presumptive evidence of felony should be admitted cautiously; for the law holds it better that ten guilty persons escape, than that one innocent party suffer." ― William Blackstone [Blackstone's formulation] An incredible, valuable edition of William Blackstone's 'Commentaries on the Laws of England.' According to Lowndes, "Of these Commentaries Sir William Jones observed, 'they are the most correct and beautiful outline that ever was exhibited in any human science.'" The Commentaries are considered the most important pre-Revolution source of common and civil law in the United States. This book is famous for being used as the key to Benedict Arnold's book cipher during the American Revolution. According to the Printing and the Mind of Man: "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history...Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine; nothing but trouble, even danger, was to be expected from contact with it. Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. He has been accused of playing to the gallery, of flattering the national vice of complacency with existing institutions. The charge is in many respects just; but it is no small achievement to change the whole climate of public opinion...Blackstone … [Click Below for Full Description]

Smith, Adam
A. Strahan and T. Cadell, London, 1791. Sixth edition of Adam Smith's magnum opus and cornerstone of economic thought. Octavo, 3 volumes. Bound in full calf, gilt titles to the spine, morocco spine labels. In near fine condition. An exceptional set of this classic work. Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. "The history of economic theory up to the end of the nineteenth century consists of two parts: the mercantilist phase which was based not so much on a doctrine as on a system of practice which grew out of social conditions; and the second phase which saw the development of the theory that the individual had the right to be unimpeded in the exercise of economic activity. While it cannot be said that Smith invented the latter theory.his work is the first major expression of it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange.Labour represents the three essential elements-wages, profit and rent-and these three also constitute income. From the working of the economy, Smith passes to its matter -'stock'- which encompasses all that man owns either for his own consumption or for the return which it brings him. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development, a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

1791. Condition: Very Good. See detailed description and photo's. I have looked online for similar copies of this book. I have not found any. I don't know if this is a "hybrid" bound privately for an individual. Please look at photo's for additional info I don't give here. I have more photo's so if you need to see more, please email. This is an 8 1/2" tall brown hardcover (probably a hard leather) with gold print on the spine. The spine reads "WHATELY ON GARDENING & ANDERSON ON PLANTING" The boards are showing rubbing and a little bumping along edges and corners. Boards are in Very Good or better condition. There is a bookplate with name (George de Ligne Gregory) on in the inside front board. The ffep is detached and has picked-up the outline of the bookplate and other items that must have been laid in. The first title page reads "OBSERVATIONS ON MODERN GARDENING, ILLUSTRATED BY DESCRIPTIONS" Printed for T. Payne MDCCLXX" There is no other print info stated. I found the author's name (Thomas Whately) on other sites where just that title was listed. This has 257 pages. After that comes the next part of the book. "MISCELLANEOUS OBSERVATIONS ON PLANTING AND TRAINING TIMBER-TREES; PARTICULARLY CALCULATED FOR THE CLIMATE OF SCOTLAND. IN A SERIES OF LETTERS" by Agricola (James Anderson). This was printed for Charlie Elliot, Edinburgh & Thomas Cadell, London. Only print info stated is M, DCC, LXXVII. This is 230 pages. There are no illustrations in the book. The pages are clean/unmarked but with some light foxing. Pages are tight. The dates stated correspond to the year each book … [Click Below for Full Description]
