James Boswell [Samuel Johnson]
London: Henry G. Bohn, Covent Garden, 1791. This is an exceptional leather bound near-fine copy of the very famous two volume set of the true first state of the first edition of James Boswell's LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, published by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly in London in 1791, with the Joshua Reynolds 1756 portrait of Samuel Johnson serving as the fronticespiece. As far as whether this copy is the very desirable first state of the first edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson, well, first, Volume 2 displays the first-state markings -- p. 585 is numbered 587 and 586 numbered 588. And about the controversial loss of the letter "i" in the word "give" on p. 135, line 10, of Volume One, the "I" is there, which some scholars now give the earlier priority. So I am listing it as the first state of the first edition. And to cap this all off -- the two volumes are absolutely pristine -- with the binding as tight as a drum, the page-edges on both volumes gilt, and the tooling on the spine wonderfully sharp and clear. I have not seen a better copy of this book. The first edition of this book has sold for as much as $20,000. I have inserted a buy-it-now price that is a fraction of this, with any good offer accepted, based on what I paid for this book when I found it. I need to downsize my collection and while I have enjoyed having such greats, it is time to pass them on.

ROWLANDSON, Thomas; MALTON, James
London: T. Malton, 1791. "Who'er has travell'd life's dull round, Through all its various paths hath been, Must oft have wondered to have found His warmest welcome at an inn!" ROWLANDSON, Thomas. MALTON, James. Inn Yard on Fire. Drawn & Etchd. by T. Rowlandson. Aquatinta by T. Malton. [London, 1791]. A Magnificent hand-colored aquatint (image size 20 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches; 397 x 518 mm.). Etched by Rowlandson, aquatinted by Malton. Matted, framed and glazed. (Frame size: 29 1/2 x 24 3/4 inches; 747 x 630 mm.). "The ardent house-warming prepared for the passengers at the Inn Yard on Fire barely justifies the rapture of the rhymer. From the notice-board we find the Dover, Deal, Margate and Canterbury Coaches are advertised to set out from the caravansary in question. The strangers are rudely disturbed, while the flames are lapping the old building and serpentining their way round the inflammable wooden balconies, as the suddenly awakened inmates take to flight with such solitary articles as come first to hand. The entire population of the building has fled into the coach yard - men and women in various (and amusing) states of dress and undress abound - wild horses - piglets and their mama sow stampede - fire roars from the windows at upper left. A sufferer from gout is being conveyed in a wheel barrow out of the imminent danger of being roasted alive...an antiquated husband is holding a ladder for the escape of his pretty wife; the curmudgeon is furious that the personal attractions of his better half should be thus displayed to the less privileged males around, who are as … [Click Below for Full Description]

PAINE, Thomas.
London: printed for J. S. Jordan,, 1791. A finely bound copy Octavo (212 x 124 mm). Contemporary red levant morocco, spine lettered in gilt and divided into compartments with urn motifs and roundel cornerpieces, single fillet rule border to boards, Greek-roll to inner dentelles in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt, green cloth page marker.A finely bound copy, spine faintly sunned and a few spots of rubbing to extremities, one shallow scratch to rear board, free endpapers a little browned, else the contents crisp and clean, stab-holes visible. Fifth edition of Paine's famous response to Burke's Reflections, handsomely bound. Rights of Man was first printed by Joseph Johnson in early 1791, but publishing of it was soon taken over by J. S. Jordan (who republished it with some amendments), apparently because Johnson feared prosecution. The work alarmed the Pitt government and led to repressive measures and censorship, yet it still managed to reach a wide audience, going though numerous reprints and various translations. "In this sense, the confrontation led to victory for Paine; it is Burke's political system which has failed to stand the test of time" (Williamson, p. 124). JAMES BUCHANAN
JAMES BUCHANAN (1791-1868). Buchanan was the Fifteenth President. ALS. 3pgs. 8" x 10". August 24 [1834-1849]. Lancaster, Pennsylvania. An autograph letter twice-signed "James Buchanan" as Senator from Pennsylvania. It concerns Democratic politics in Pennsylvania, probably to do with Buchanan's failed attempts to earn the Presidential nomination in the 1840s. "My dear Sir/ Jessie is not yet here. Her vacation will not commence until Friday next. I expect her on the succeeding Monday with the daughters of Mr. Reynolds who will go for them. Jessie will spend the first part of her vacation at Edwards & the remainder of it with me. I shall send the letter which you enclosed to me to her immediately. It appears the building is a very small affair after all; and very different from what I had supposed judging from Jessie's description of it who thought 'every thing would be very much changed on her return home.' Although it is a good thing to be out of debt; yet I should be very sorry you would sacrifice any property to pay me. Indeed my money may as well be in your hands as those of any other person. I have no news to communicate. I am gratified that the attempt which was made by Benjamin Patton & a small clique in Pittsburg to get Forsyth up for the Vice Presidency, with a view of injuring me, had so signally failed in Pennsylvania. It is now pretty certain that Col: King will receive the nomination of our State, should it be deemed advisable to drop old Tecumseh. First edition, a fine, uncut, and complete copy with the rare second volume, of Schröter’s famous work, ‘the foundation of modern selenography’ (Brown). ‘Schröter studied law at Göttingen but also attended lectures in mathematics, physics, and astronomy, the last under Kästner Through his appreciation of music he met the Herschel family, who revived his interest in astronomy. In 1781 he became chief magistrate at Lilienthal, a post that left him free time to devote to astronomy. With the aid of the optician J.G. Schrader he built and equipped an observatory that subsequently became world-famous for the excellence of the instruments. Some were made in his own workshop; others he bought from Herschel, the latter including a reflector with a twenty-seven-foot focal length, the largest on the Continent. George III of England enabled Schröter to continue his astronomical work by buying all of his instruments, with the stipulation that they remain in Schröter’s possession until his death, when they would become the property of the University of Göttingen. Schröter was also awarded a grant to hire an assistant. K.L. Harding and, later, F.W. Bessel were among those who held the post. ‘For thirty years the observatory at Lilienthal was a center of astronomical research and was visited by … [Click Below for Full Description]
