Home, Everard; William Herschel
London, 1791. Herschel, William (1738-1822). On nebulous stars, properly so called. In Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 81, part 1 (1791): 71-88. With: Home, Everard (1756-1832). Observations on certain horny excrescences of the human body. In ibid.: 95-105. Whole volume, 4to. vi, [2], 127, [1], 26, iv, 129-438, [2, incl. errata]pp. 10 engraved plates. 275 x 215 mm. Calf gilt ca. 1791, spine rubbed, hinges cracked, corners worn. Very good, clean copy. Engraved bookplate of John Douglas, Bishop of Salisbury (1721-1807). First Editions, journal issues. Herschel's paper records his observation in 1790 of the planetary nebula now known as NGC 1514, which caused him to reconsider his hypothesis that all nebulae were in fact star clusters disguised by distance. NGC 1514 "is so close to Earth that William was able to see the central star that in fact is always present in a planetary nebula. Accordingly, William classified the object as a nebulous star. Marveling at what he saw, he accepted the evidence before his very eyes, even though it contradicted the theory he had argued . . . He had to accept that the spherical glow around the star could not be a distant globular cluster that by pure chance lay in exactly the same direction as the star: it must be 'true nebulosity' out of which the star was condensing" (M. Hoskin, William and Caroline Herschel: Pioneers in Late 18th-Century Astronomy, pp. 40-41). MARINER, William and John MARTIN (editor).
XXII, [23]-398, [2]; 398 pp.First edition of the French translation of an important account of the Tonga islands by the English William Charles Mariner (1791-1853), who lived in Tonga for four years. When he was young, Mariner sailed in the privateer Porte au Prince to the New World with the objective of attacking Spanish ships and searching for whales. They seized several Spanish vessels and added several Hawaiians to the crew in 1806. Their visit to the Tonga Islands proved fatal: almost the entire the crew was massacred by the natives (ironically, James Cook had dubbed Tonga the "Friendly Islands"). The author, however, survived and lived there from circa 1806 to 1810, observing and recording Tonga culture with a keen eye for detail. Volume two includes some interesting notes on James Cook, who with his crew had met a friendly reception there. "Mariner's meticulous observations on Tonga make this a key historical text on the history and culture of this island group" (Forbes). From the library of Marie-Louise (1791-1847), Empress as the second wife of Napoleon Bonaparte until his defeat in 1814 and then Duchess of Parma. Her library contained many books on natural history, but also many travel books. It was dispersed in the 1930's. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities. A few small spots in text. Overall in very good condition.l Forbes 468; cf. Howgego, 1800-1850, M14.

LABILLARDIÈRE, Jacques Julien Houton de.
XVI, 442; 332, 113, [1] pp.First edition of Labillardière's famous and finely illustrated narrative, a classic work of travel literature. The mysterious disappearance of the great French explorer Jean François Galaup de La Pérouse, led to much speculation in France. On 9 February 1791 the Constituent Assembly passed a decree ordering, among other things, that the King be petitioned to order the fitting out of one or more ships equipped with naturalists, other scientists and draughtsman, with the two-fold mission of searching for De la Pérouse and of making inquiries relative to the sciences and to commerce. Two ships, under the command of Captain Kermadec, proceeded via the Cape of Good Hope to Tasmania, they made extensive investigations of its coastline. They also visited New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, the Admiralty Islands, Tonga, New Britain and other groups, making extensive inquiries, but found no trace of the missing navigator (Ferguson). The voyage, however, yielded a vast amount of new and valuable information on Australia's natural history and the aboriginal people of Tasmania. Each text volume with library stampse. Plates mounted on new stubs, a few plates slightly frayed along the edges, some mostly marginal foxing and occasionally other spots or smudges, more serious in the title-pages and half-titles. Otherwise in very good condition. 4to edition of Labillardière's celebrated voyage in search of La Pérouse, with plates after Redouté.l Ferguson 307; Kroepelien 697; Nissen, ZBI 2331; Sabin 38420.

SARL ABRAXAS-LIBRIS, 1791. Condition: Good. RARE ALMANACH-HOROSCOPE. VERY GOOD CONDITION AND MANY ETCHES. MOROCCO OF THE TIME. In-32 (6.5 x 11.5 cm.) In Paris , at Janet succ. by sieur Jubert, Rue Saint-Jacques (1791). Red morocco. Framing of a golden triple-net, ornate smooth back, title piece in green morocco, gold title, lace on the cups and pencil holder clasp with Mine de plomb . Reread of the time. Engraved title, 10 plates inset text in black and white, 24 pp. on bluish paper (songs with engraved music), then 48 pp. on bluish paper, diary, etc., then 6 ff. calendar for 1792. This rare almanac-horoscope was published and established by a craftsman and maker of "blankets, souvenirs in morocco and embroidery of all kinds". The title page shows a composition depicting a landscape with a cherub and a hexagon with the numbers referring to the text in order to obtain the answers to the questions asked. The title page and the 10 other inset engravings are engraved by Dorgez. Very interesting copy, because at the end of the first part, there is the tale: "The sick dyer", which has been reproduced many times thereafter. The blank sheets of the agenda carry handwritten notes, probably from the 18th century and the hexagon of the title page has obviously served, since it bears many tiny pin marks, which were used from the back to draw a number ! Beautiful copy, rare and fresh. RARE ALMANACH-HOROSCOPE. VERY GOOD CONDITION AND MANY ETCHES. MOROCCO OF THE TIME. In-32 (6.5 x 11.5 cm.) A Paris , a Janet succ. del sieur Jubert, Rue Saint-Jacques (1791). Marocco rosso. In addition to the engraved frontispiece by Barlow (state B per Hazen), it has been extra-illustrated with the seven plates color-printed à la poupée for the noted Edward Jeffery edition of 1796. These plates had previously appeared in Jean Sivrac's Italian translation (London, 1795); the six depicting scenes from the novel were executed by the Scottish engraver Andrew Birrell, after designs by "a lady," Miss Anne Millicent Clarke, the daughter of Ann Radcliffe, the leading author of gothic fiction in the 1790s. Medicamentorum sylloge, propriae pharmacologiae exempla sistens in usum Academicarum praelectionum. Hanc editionem curavit Jacobus dAncona. Juxta exemplar Conimbrieense, ex Typographia Academico-Regia. A.C. MDCCLXXXVIII.Amsterdam, Johannes de Coster, 1791. 8vo. Mottled calf, gold-tooled spine. VIII, 224, 7 pp. First and only Amsterdam edition, with additions, of an pharmacological and medical work by the famous Coimbra professor of medicine and pharmacology Franciscus Tavares (1750-1812), now edited by the Amsterdam Jewish physician Jacob dAncona (1739-1798) who added a list, partly in Dutch, of explanations of the Latin plant names. The first edition appeared in Coimbra in 1787, with three further editions in 1788, 1790 and 1791, the present edition based on that of 1788. Together with another book by Tavares, De pharmacologia libellus, published in Coimbra in 1786 (2nd ed. 1787), the Medicamentorum sylloge, formed the basis for the first official Portuguese pharmacopoeia: the Pharmacopeia geral, published in 1794, which is in fact also written by Tavares, propagating new insights, namely that the recent scientific results of natural history and chemistry are essential and fundamental for the further development of the science of pharmacology.Head and foot of spine slightly worn. New endpapers. Otherwise in very good condition. João Rui Pita, "La pharmacie au Portugal (1772-1836)", in: Revue dhist. de la pharmacie, 1998, pp. 54-56.

Daniel Defoe
London: 1791. The exteriors show the expected age-related wear, but the bindings are secure. The interiors show occasional foxing but are generally quite clean. There is a vertical tear in the middle of the folding map that extends about 3/5 of the way up. On offer is a two-volume set of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, published by Rivington et al. in 1791, containing a total of twelve full-page engraved plates plus a large folding map. Seven inches tall, in what is presumably the original full calf. Vol. I: 288 pp.; seven plates, including the frontispiece; Vol. II: 275 pp.; five plates, plus the large folding map. Both volumes contain two blank leaves at the front and two blank leaves at the end. As the photos should show, the exteriors show the expected age-related wear, but the bindings are secure. The interiors show occasional foxing but are generally quite clean. There is a vertical tear in the middle of the folding map that extends about 3/5 of the way up. Buyer to pay actual cost of postage. International buyers are welcome.

Revilla Gigedo, Juan Vicente Güemes Pacheco de Padilla, Conde de.
No publisher/printer, 1791. Viceroy Revilla Gigedo promulgates a royal decree abolishing several past edicts limiting access to the stores of silver and gold in the viceregal mint and here allows silver- and goldsmiths to obtain, with certain limits and requirements, the metals they need for their work. The printer has opened the text here with a rather nice 5-line initial "P." NUC and WorldCat locate only one library (National Library of Spain) reporting ownership of the actual broadside, but we know of another in the National Library of Chile.

BACCANTI, Alberto.
Casalmaggiore: Fratelli Bizzarri, 1791. Casalmaggiore: Fratelli Bizzarri,, 1791. 2 volumes in one, quarto (235 x 172 mm). Contemporary half sheep vellum, marbled sides, twin morocco labels lettered in gilt and manuscript shelf-mark label to spine, edges speckled blue. 2 engraved portrait frontispieces and 12 similar numbered plates by Paolo Araldi, vignettes to title pages. Complete with the half-titles and imprimatur leaf. Boards slightly rubbed with light wear along fore edges, labels a touch chipped to minimal loss of lettering, very sporadic faint soiling chiefly to margins, isolated portions of minor dampstaining to head of gutter. An excellent copy. First and only edition of this epic poem in Italian recounting the life of Muhammad in 12 cantos of ottava rima, each canto illustrated with a full-page engraved plate, in addition to two frontispiece portraits of the author and of Muhammad astride a rampant horse, all after original paintings by Paolo Araldi. Originally from Casalmaggiore, Araldi (d. 1811) studied at the Academy of Parma, where he taught Giuseppe Diotti (1779-1816), before returning to his native city. Alberto Baccanti (1718-1805), also from Casalmaggiore, studied theology at Cremona before travelling to Rome in 1741, under the auspices of the Gonzagas to work in the Vatican as a papal secretary. He returned to Casalmaggiore in 1755. Tipaldo lists an additional 10 printed and 11 manuscript works written by Baccanti, chiefly poems, orations, and exequies in verse. The plates depict Muhammad in the stages of his prophecy: ascending with the archangel Gab … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed for E. Newbery
1791. The Cries Of London As They Are Daily Exhibited In The Streets; With an Epigram in verse, adapted to each. Embellished with Sixty- two elegant cuts; to which is added, A Description of the Metropolis in verse. London: Printed for E.Newbery, at the corner of St Paul's Church Yard. 1791? Bound in original Dutch floral paper covered boards, rebacked, and with new endpapers. A defective copy of this extremely fugitive edition of this work. An online resource "SoundSurvey"[://www.soundsurvey.org.uk/index.php/history/street_cries/brit1/494/2938] shows the 1796 edition of the work, with floral decorative embellishments around the cuts. Our edition has essentially the same text, sometimes laid out differently, and has the same plates. We think this copy is the 1791 first edition although with the absence of a title page, this is not clear. The later 1804 work with the same title is an altogether different edition. The collation should read : title, blank, (v) 6-127, blank, 129-131 [A description of London], 132 -133 [A Song On The City of London](vi unnumbered pages of the publisher's catalogue), final blank . [P132 is wrongly numbered as 133]. This copy lacks all before (iii) at A4, pp9-14, 63/64 torn with loss, pp 93/94, 107/108, 109/110, 123/124. The only other copy that we can find for sale online also lacks 93/94 and 123/124. An additional seven leaves or so have been strengthened with archival repair tape, some with loss. Ownership inscription to verso of first blank" H.T.Deade Eius Liber, Domum 1825 ....the gift of Mary Deade" . We have found a record of Hicks Thomas … [Click Below for Full Description]
