[Attributes: First Edition]

COMMON SENSE addressed to the INHABITANTS of AMERICA .

Jordan, J.S., printed for., 166 Fleet Street, London 1791 - VG text block, disbound. From a sammelband binding. No prelims, first page is tp. Gimbel CS-59. 206x128x18(mm), (1-3),4-90pp. Damp stained top edge of first four leaves. Small chips from bottom corner of pages 7 & 19. Detached tp, cracked signature at p23. Flawless text otherwise. This edition is first British printing since 1777. It blanks out all the censored sections. The British didn't publish an uncensored edition until mid 1800s. An unusual binding in that a sheet of blank, laid paper has been inserted between each text page with the result that the book is 180 pages long. Three of the laid in leaves have extensive, pencilled anti Paine commentary, three others with just a few sentences. Most of commentary quite legible. Likely written in early 1800s as the long "s" used twice, "chuce" for "chose", "republick" for "republic", words abbreviated by using super script final letters & capitalizing many words internal in a sentence. The following pencilled comment faces p6: "Mr P always avoids with care Reasoning from Facts & the History of Mankind & neglects all together the Authority of the Patriarchs from the first Man to the Dispersion". This faces p23: "All this Reasoning is ably refuted by Mr Shuckford, tho unintentionally". Extensive commentary faces pp16 & 24, the last sentence of which reads: "His Simile is as Contemptible as his Skepticism." Writer is unsigned. The referenced Shuckford may be the Samuel Shuckford of "The Sacred and Profane History of the World." This Shuckford (d. 1754) was a historian & religious figure who may have been one of George IIs chaplains. Some of the commentary facing pages 16 & 24 is of a religious nature. VG text block. FINE text BUT FOR: 1-8 top margins damp stained. [Attributes: First Edition]

Portrait frontispiece engraved by James Heath after Sir Joshua Reynolds, 2 engraved facsimile plates by H. Shepherd. Modern bookplate to front free endpapers. A few dark marks and cracks to leather of spines, covers a little scuffed, wear to extremities, foxing to text block, 30 mm closed tear to quire Kkk vol. 1, 20 mm tear to quire Ppp vol. 1, small bit of loss to Sss vol. 1, 25 mm tear to quire Ttt vol. 2. First edition of the most famous biography in any language. This copy has p. 135, vol. 1, in the corrected state, reading "give". This is not an issue point for the whole book; some copies read "gve", but the correction was made in the press, and 1,750 copies with either state were available on publication day, 16 May 1791 (800 were sold in the first two weeks). Laid-in is a letter dated to 20 February 1930 to the later owner from Ben Abrahamson's Argus Book Shop in Chicago discussing the "give" issue point and explaining whether copies with "give constitute the first issue." The immense task of compiling the thousands of notes Boswell had recorded on "the great man's talk, habits and opinions" was begun after Johnson's death in 1784. Made up of trifling incidents as well as the significant events in Johnson's life, the work remains a masterpiece of portraiture. "Homer is not more decidedly the first of heroic poets, Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of dramatists, Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of orators, than Boswell is the first of biographers" (Macaulay). Boswell's reputation was further enhanced by the discovery in the early part of the 20th century of the Boswell Papers, which were stored in the Malahide Castle of Ireland for generations. What resulted from this discovery was the revelation of Boswell as an extraordinary personality in his own right; a far more complex, eccentric genius than the mere recorder of Johnson's conversations. This copy comes from the library of Thomas Philip, 2nd Earl de Grey (1781–1859), as indicated by bookplates on the front free endpapers.

From the Hugh Selbourne Library with a small stamp proclaiming this to the reverse of the title page.       Berlin, Christian Friedrich Himburg, 1790-1791. Teils etwas stockfleckig. Breitrandig. – Goed. VI 34, 3 (Tieck) und V 521, 27, 1 (Rambach); Slg Kippenberg II 5655. Nicht bei Goedeke V 290, 12 (Hagemeister). [Attributes: First Edition]

OBSERVATIONS UPON THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Boston: Printed and sold by Samuel Hall, 1791. 55pp. Lacks half title. Late 19th-century three-quarter red morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Spine ends chipped, hinges and corners worn. Light foxing and toning, heavier to outer leaves. Good plus. Untrimmed. This anti-Federalist tract discusses the question of whether the separate states, as states, were liable to any tribunal by civil process, or whether they were an assemblage of republics, held together as a nation by the United States, or one republic made up of corporations. A successful country lawyer of Irish extraction, James Sullivan rose to become a prominent jurist, representative, historian, and noted patriot. He was a key figure in the American Revolution, and ended his career as governor of Massachusetts. An important early constitutional discussion. HOWES S1123. EVANS 23812. ESTC W28722.

Ariana a Naxos. Cantata a Voce Sola. Accompagnata col Clavicembalo o Forte-Piano.

London, John Bland for the author, [June 1791]. - Oblong folio (335 x 239 mm). 18 pp., engraved throughout Contemporary coloured paper wrappers. Signed by Haydn on the title page. Termed the "original first edition" by Hoboken. A secular cantata composed around 1789, the first edition proper was published by Artaria in 1790. The publisher Bland had visited Haydn at Eszterháza; he was instrumental in bringing Haydn to London and provided his first lodging there in January 1791. "Arianna" was performed in London in February by the soprano castrato Gasparo Pacchierotti, with Haydn accompanying on the harpsichord: "On 18 February [1791] Haydn made his first appearance in a concert in which he accompanied his cantata 'Ariana a Naxos' on the pianoforte. The success was such that the cantata's performance needed to be repeated a few days later" (cf. Huss, p. 146f.). Haydn later would regarded the two periods he spent in the British capital (1791-92 and 1794-95) as the happiest of his life. - Beautifully preserved. Hob. II, 298. RISM H/HH, 2584. Hoboken cat. 9, no. 1583 (fig. 17). Eitner V, p. 68. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

         Voyages et Mémoires.

      F. Buisson, Paris 1791 - Two volumes, octavo, half-title not present in the first volume; old French sprinkled calf, spine gilt with double labels. First edition in French of this scarce narrative of a voyage in the north Pacific, particularly interesting for Alaska, Kamchatka and the Northwest. Often regarded as a distinctly odd book with its gripping account of Siberia, Kamchatka, Japan, China and the north Pacific, it is deemed by Lada-Mocarski as 'one of the early and fundamental books on the Northwest coast of America in general and on Alaska in particular'.Benyowsky's account has suffered from the time of publication until now from a perception that its narrative may not be entirely truthful. Nicholson's preface to this first edition is quite argumentative on the subject, seeking to prove its veracity by all sorts of checks against maps and other narratives. The preface has Benyowsky losing his memory, the attempted publication by subscription failing, the engraver's house burning down and thus losing many of the engravings intended for the volume (which would explain the strange gaps in numbering of the engravings), and a host of other bizarre circumstances which should perhaps come under the heading "no smoke".Even Benyowsky's nationality is (and was) in doubt. At different times he was either by nationality or service Hungarian, Austrian, Lithuanian, German, Polish and Russian. Exiled by the Russian government to Siberia for political involvements: 'with a handful of equally adventurous men, he escaped from Kamchatka by sea in 1771? The work contains interesting accounts of Siberia, the Russian fur trade, and the history, life and customs of Kamchatka. The author also describes the Kurile and Aleutian Islands, and claims to have landed on the Alaska mainland?' (Hill). 'In the Alaska-related material of this journal there is a very good general account of the Aleutian Islands, and a history and description of early Russian visits to Alaska.' (Lada-Mocarski).As Howgego points out 'The composer Boieldieu would later write a comic opera based on Benyowsky's exploits, including his escape from Kamchatka. Catherine the Great took the opera very seriously, deciding that the settlement of exiles in the Siberian northeast jeopardized Russia's situation there'. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Manuscript in ink on paper penned in a large chancery hand. Signed at end : Yo El Rey and coun¬tersigned by the royal secretary Silvestre Collar,.and seven other officials; mark of original wax seal. [4] leaves. Royal oval seal stamp in left top corner of first page. Contemporary red morocco with gilt borders. Seven compartments of spine richly decorated in gilt; edges gilt; sides rubbed; corners worn. Royal confirmation of noble status for Antonio de las Cagigas from Escalante, Spain, son of Antonio de las Cagigas of Santander and Juana del Castillo Santelices, who had sailed to Spanish America from El Ferrol in 1784 to become an outstanding administrator in Buenos Aires. The beautifully ornamented document, written in a fine chancery hand, contains the petition made by Felipe Perez on Cagigas’s behalf to the royal chancery at Valladolid with the support of Juan Félix de Ganzio y Palacio, and Francisca de las Cagigas Castillo, nephew and sister of Cagigas, both from Escalante. The greater part of the volume contains testimonials by the scribe, Bernardo de Oceso, sworn statements, records of marriages, betrothals and baptisms, and authenticated copies of tax-lists relating to the Cagigas’s ancestors. A small inkstain on 2 leaves not affecting text, otherwise in excellent original condition throughout. Bound at the end is a royal approbation of additional documents submitted by Manuel Garcia Navas in the name of Antonio de las Cagigas issued to ensure that the patent of noble descent will be acknowledged in the kingdoms of the Indies. Antonio de las Cagigas had made a rapid career in the government of Buenos Aires: by 1790 he was treasurer to the police department; successively acting as commissioner of municipal paving, excise, and lighting, he first introduced street lighting to the city; in 1799 he became Syndic of the Buenos Aires Chamber of Commerce. Cagigas' main claim to fame in Argentine history, however, is his contribution to the defence of the city against the attempted British Invasion of 1807, when he directed the digging of trenches for placing cannon in the streets and in the plaza, and provided the lighting necessary for the night march of 2nd July undertaken by the local militia. His estate at Barracas, west of Buenos Aires, became famous as a point of confrontation with the British troops advancing across the Riochuelo river towards the city (see Vicente Osualdo Cutolo, Nuevo Diccionario Biográfico Argentino, Bue¬nos Aires 1969), II, p41).          Autograph letter in ink, signed ‘Casanova’, to his benefactor and fellow freemason, Count Ottaviano Antonio di Collalto.

Dated: Dresden, 17 May 1791. - 4to. 3 pages in 4to. An interesting letter by the ageing adventurer and commentator reflecting the unstable period of fragile alliances at the beginning of the French Revolution, known as ‘the reign of diplomacy’, with Russia seeking to replace its French ally, now paralysed by increasing political turmoil. Addressed to ‘Eccellenza mio Vener[abilissi]mo Padrone’, signed ‘Casanova’, the writer demonstrates continued, lively interest in world affairs and diplomacy at the highest level. Casanova had maintained his many aristocratic contacts since acting as librarian to the imperial chamberlain, Count Joseph Karl von Waldstein, at Dux Castle in northern Bohemia, where he remained in close and easy reach of the Saxon capital Dresden, and wrote his memoirs (Histoire de ma Vie) . Casanova says he had lunch with Prince Beloselsky (n.1), (the influential Russian ambassador to Saxony), who handed him his benefactor’s letter with news of the arrival of Pietro Grimani, the new Venetian minister to Dresden. Casanova is keen to demonstrate to Grimani that he remains a Venetian at heart, and that he wants to express his gratitude to the latter’s uncle the State Inquisitor, Francesco Grimani, for having allowed him to return to Venice 16 years earlier. Casanova begs Collalto to inform Pietro Grimani that he would like to assist him during his stay in Dresden. He praises Collalto’s excellent health hoping that this is not the result of treatment by fashionable animal magnetism, but because of taking the waters at Elba, preferred by Casanova with the weather improving. He mentions the Saxon Court taking a holiday at Pillnitz (n.2) Castle, east of Dresden, in order to seek neutrality and escape the dangers of war provoked by the demands of the king of Prussia. Casanova joyfully anticipates the impending coronation festivities at the Viennese Court in the splendid tradition of the previous generation, asking his patron if the Austrian emperor will indeed be crowned Holy Roman Emperor (n.3) next month at Frankfurt. (1) (Alexander Mikhailovich Prince Beloselsky (1752-1809), Russian minister to Saxony appointed by Catherine the Great in 1780, stayed over a decade to develop a Russian alliance with neighbouring Prussia. An intellectual and art lover, Beloselsky published a treatise on Italian music in 1778 and corresponded with Voltaire, Rousseau and Kant. (2) Ironically the ‘Declaration of Pillnitz’ of 25th August 1791 by King Frederick William II of Prussia and Emperor Leopold II of Austria warning France not to harm or diminish the power of King Louis XVI was to provoke the French revolutionary wars. (3) Casanova confused the celebrations for the impending coronation of Leopold II as king of Bohemia in Prague on 6th September 1791 with the imperial coronation at Frankfurt; this took place a year later when Leopold’s son, Franz II of Habsburg-Lorraine, was crowned the last Holy Roman Emperor on 14th July 1792. Autograph letters by Casanova of this length and interest are rarely offered for sale.

         A General History of Quadrupeds.

1791 1791 - 4th edition. Newcastle upon Tyne, Printed by and for S. Hodgson, R. Beilby, & T. Bewick, 1800. With 212 woodcuts and 107 vignettes. [4] + X + 526 pp. Clean and well-preserved copy bound in nice contemporary full marbled calf, early rebacked with coloured labels and richly gilt spine. * Fourth edition of Thomas Bewick's first book [and the first printed on Imperial thick woved paper] which made him famous as renewer of the woodcut technique. This is not only a reprint but a largely revised, expanded, and improved work of the first edition printed 10 years earlier. Many blocks have been reworked, 12 new figures are added. Instead of using the most applied pear tree Bewick started using the harder box tree and this gave a far more satisfactory impresson of the cut. Roscoe 22 + 4 a. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

François Levaillant (later known as Le Vaillant, meaning 'The Valiant') was a French explorer, naturalist, zoological collector, and ornithologist. He described many new species of birds found in Africa and had a number of birds named after him. He was sent via the Dutch East India Company to Cape Province of South Africa in 1780 where he collected numerous specimens until July 1784 when he returned to Holland. In all he made three journeys to Africa, one around Cape Town (April to August 1781), one eastwards from the Cape (1781-82) and the last north of the Orange River into Great Namaqualand (1783-84). An illustrative map of his travels was published around 1790 for King Louis XVI with the cartographic elements of the map made by Perrier and the insets of animals and landscapes by Van Leen. The birds were by Reinold. Sixty two pictures of fauna and flora appeared on the map. As a traveller in Africa, Le Vaillant described the African people without prejudice expounding Rousseau's view of the "Noble savage" and condemnation of civilisation. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
