The New, Comprehensive, Impartial and Complete History of England: from the very first period of Authentic Information, to the End of the Present Year

London: Alexander Hogg, 1790 A good copy in recent quarter leather binding, with frontispiece, folding map of England and Wales, maps of Scotland and Ireland, and 103 further full page plates. Like many attempts to cover 'earliest history' to 'the present day', this is somewhat sketchy on the early sections, but increasingly detailed almost to a diary approach on 'the present day'. This is a later edition - undated - but the last entry is for June 10th 1790. The author simply added pages to update so although the text pagination runs to p714, the index section starts at p709 reflecting the smaller initial version. Known particularly for its lavish engravings - especially the later ones covering the American War of Independence. This copy has been recently rebound: the binding has a leather spine and title label and marbled boards and is in very good condition. New endpapers. Contents with frontispiece, title page, dedication, table, preface with decorative tailpiece, folding map of England and Wales and text to p 714, Index p709-712, directions to the binder and 4 page list of subscribers. The initial (up to around p20) and final pages have very fragile page edges and small outer margin tears. The folding map has been laid out on a paper backing for support. The paper has brown toning and there is occasional marking and light staining. There is some mispagination (eg p441-444 are missing but the text is continuous). There are a number of small tears to pages which have been repaired - these generally affect margins rather than text. 3 plates have been damaged - one is repaired; the other two have loss to margins with the plate of King John signing the Magna Charta losing a little of the bottom title. We can provide more images on request.

Abbildung der hundert deutschen wilden Holz-Arten nach dem Numern-Verzeichnis im Forst-Handbuch von F.A.L. von Burgsdorf.

Als eine Beilage zu diesem Werke, heraus gegeben. I.(-IV.) Heft (all published). Stuttgart, gedrukt in der Drukerei der Herzoglichen Hohen Karls-Schule, 1790. 4to (280 x 225mm). pp. (14), 38, with 100 handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, ornamented spine with gilt lettered label (old skilful repair to hinges). A fine copy of the first edition of this very rare botanical work describing one hundred woody plants, with fruit and flowers growing wild in Germany. The colouring of the plates is of an unusual high standard, and belongs to the very best produced in southern Germany at its summit of fine natural history production. The plates are engraved and drawn by G.F. Abel himself, a Stuttgart artist and engraver. Apart from this and one other work, also by Reiter, he is otherwise unknown as a botanical artist. One technique employed, unusual in colour-plate botanical books, is the use of background shadows to give the illusion of the plants standing slightly above the surface of the page.//Reiter was a botanist and forester; he was forestry commissioner at Stuttgart 1794-1801 and later in the Würtemberger forestry department. The Burgsdorf work referred to in the title is his 'Anleitung zur sichern Erziehung....' 1787. The plates are in mint condition.//Nissen BBI, 1617; Stafleu & Cowan 8971.

The 3 parts were published together. Very popular it was re-edited several times, and translated into French and German.         [Marshal Turenne]

1790. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of two creased tears on the right margin. Tiny tear on top margin. Image size: 18 3/8 x 15 inches. A fine proof impression of Bouteloup's striking portrait of Marshal Turenne, one of France's most celebrated military heroes. Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne was one of France's greatest military commanders. The son of the duc de Bouillon, Turenne was born in Sedan in 1611. By the time of his death in 1675, Turenne had risen to the rank of Marshal of France, after leading a career that inspired Napoleon to list him as one of France's most important captains. He showed his capabilities during the Thirty Years War, when he distinguished himself with countless victories, and played a pivotal role in the Dutch Wars under Louis XIV. He was killed at the battle of Sasbach in 1675, and his remains were later moved by Napoleon to Les Invalides in Paris. This triumphant engraving by Louis Alexandre Bouteloup reproduces a celebrated sculpture of Turenne by Robert Guillaume Dardel. Dardel was the pupil of Augustin Pajou, but he did not become a member of the Academie Royale until 1791. He exhibited primarily at the Salon de Correspondence, and since he was denied access to the royal marble his works are mostly modeled in terracotta and bronze. Dardel cast this commemorative bronze statue of Turenne for his patron, Prince Louis-Joseph de Conde, in 1785, and it is considered one of his most successful works.

        Mystery Artist: Sharaku [Mistery]

No Date, Japan - Quarto, Illustrated with many color plates, including several tipped in plates. Bilingual in English and Japanese. Toshusai Sharaku (active 1790 - 1795) is widely considered to be one of the great masters of the woodblock printing in Japan. Little is known of him, besides his ukiyo-e prints; neither his true name nor the date of his death are known with any certainty. His active career as a woodblock artist seems to have spanned just ten months, from late 1794 to early 1795.One theory claims that Sharaku was not a person, but a project launched by a group of artists to help a woodblock print house that had aided them. In this theory, the name Sharaku is taken from sharakusai, "nonsense," and is an in-joke by the artists, who knew that there was no actual Sharaku. The rapidly changing style that Sharaku utilized, with four distinct stylistic changes in his short career, lends credibility to this claim. It was also common for woodblock prints of this time to involve anywhere from 5 to 10 or more artisans working together. It seems unlikely that none of them would reveal Sharaku's true identity, or otherwise leave some information about Sharaku behind. Another speculation associates Sharaku with the great ukiyo-e master Hokusai. This explanation stems from Hokusai's disappearance from the art world between the years of 1792 and 1796, the period that Sharaku's work began to appear. Beyond giving a reason for Hokusai's absence from the Edo art scene during this time the theory has little evidence. Regarding his abrupt disappearance, one conjecture is that his master was unhappy with his retainer's association with the demi- monde of the kabuki theatre. Fine in original carton. This is copy #85 in a limited edition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Loureiro (1717-1791) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary and in the present work 'which established many new genera and plants' (Johnston 598) the flora of southern Indochina and Vietnam is described. He was not a professional botanist but had acquired good botanical knowledge to whom we owe one of the most important contributions concerning the flora of the eastern part of the trans Gangetic Peninsula and of South China."         A Front Page Printing of Washington's Second State-of-the-Union Address

Boston, MA 1790 - Newspaper. Columbian Centinel, Boston, Mass., December 22, 1790. 4 pp., disbound. Excerpt "Fellow-Citizens of the Senate and House of Representatives: In meeting you again I feel much satisfaction in being able to repeat my congratulations on the favorable prospects which continue to distinguish our public affairs. . Since your last sessions I have received communications by which it appears that the district of Kentucky, at present a part of Virginia, has concurred in certain propositions contained in a law of that State, in consequence of which the district is to become a distinct member of the Union . It has been heretofore known to Congress that frequent incursions have been made on our frontier settlements by certain banditti of Indians from the northwest side of the Ohio. .The lives of a number of valuable citizens have thus been sacrificed, and some of them under circumstances peculiarly shocking . the aggressors should be made sensible that the Government of the Union is not less capable of punishing their crimes than it is disposed to respect their rights and reward their attachments. As this object could not be effected by defensive measures, it became necessary to put in force the act which empowers the President to call out the militia for the protection of the frontiers . The establishment of the militia, of a mint, of standards of weights and measures, of the post office and post roads are subjects which I presume you will resume of course, and which are abundantly urged by their own importance." The message continues on page 2, where it is signed in type, "George Washington."

Geographie'. French children's geographical card game dating from the period of the French Revolution, with cards pertaining to Terres Australes and Etats Unis.

1790 - 1800, France: 1790 - Children's geographical card game with vivid political content, dating from the French Revolution and from just after the American Revolution, as the 38th card, 'Etats Unis' describes Philadelphia as the capital, which was the temporary capital of the United States from 1790 to 1800, while the Federal City was under construction in the District of Columbia. Card V, "La France, Description Politique", refers to the French Revolution and the abolition of the monarchy, as follows: "[La France] a ete gouvernee par soixante-sept Rois de trois races differentes, depuis Pharamond jusqu'a Louis XVI, sous le regne duquel le gouvernement monarchique fut aboli". This card goes on to extol contemporary life in France: "La France est aujourd'hui . le pays de la terre ou l'art de vivre en societe est cultive avec le plus de succes". An astonishing claim, given that tens of thousands of Frenchmen had just been dispatched during the reign of terror of 1793 - 1794.Card XXXVIII (United States) also gives credit to the French role in winning the American Revolution: "Les Americains, aides par les Francais, proclamerent leur liberte en 1776, et se formerent en republique, sous le nom d'Etats Unis". Card XLVIII, "Terres Polaires et Australes", which mentions Nouvelle Hollande and Botany-Bay, and la terre de Diemen. Accompanying Botany Bay, there is a mention of convicts: "Les Anglais ont forme . une etablissement qu'ils nomment Botany-Bay, ou ils deportent leurs criminels". Casts various aspersions on the inhabitants, both native and convict. The game consists of 48 cards describing various countries & geographical features of the world, each one embellished with a small circular portrait of a native, with text below. Other countries include La Russie (Russia), Turquie (Turkey), all the European countries, Arabie (Arabia), La Perse (Persia/Iran), Indies (East Indies), La Chine (China), Islands, Seas and Mountains of Asia, Cafrerie (South Africa), Canada, Amerique (North & South America), Le Mexique, Terre-Ferme et Pays des Amazones, Guyana, Peru, Brazil, Terre Magellanique et Terre de Feu (Patagonia).         Premieres, Meditations, Poetiques; and, Histoire Des Girondins; (20 Volumes)

Garnier Freres, Libraires-Editeurs, Paris - 20 VOLUME SET. Quarter dark brown morocco leather with marbled boards and endpages. Lovely french binding with blind stamped floral design with green colored leather centered in each compartment. Raised bands (gilt). Mild rubbing to the leather and boards. Overall a VERY GOOD PLUS set. Great gift. Alphonse Marie Louise Prat de Lamartine (Alphonse-Marie-Louis de Prat de Lamartine) (October 21, 1790 - February 28, 1869) was a French writer, poet and politician, born in Mâcon into French provincial nobility. He is famous for his partly autobiographical poem, "Le Lac" ("The Lake"), which describes in retrospect the fervent love shared by a couple from the point of view of the bereaved man. Lamartine was masterly in his use of French poetic forms. He was one of very few French literary figures to combine his writing with a political career. Raised a devout Catholic Lamartine became a pantheist, writing Jocelyn and La Chute d'un ange. He wrote Histoire des Girondins in 1847 in praise of the Girondists. He worked for the French embassy in Italy from 1825 to 1828. In 1829, he was elected a member of the Académie française. He was elected a 'député' in 1833, and was briefly in charge of government during the turbulence of 1848. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from February 24, 1848 to May 11, 1848. During his term as a politician in the Second Republic of France, he led efforts that eventually led to the abolition of slavery and the death penalty, as well as the enshrinement of the right to work and the shortlived national workshop programs. A political idealist who supported democracy and pacifism, his moderate stance on most issues caused his followers to desert him. He was an unsuccessful candidate to the presidential election of December 10, 1848. He subsequently retired from politics and dedicated himself to literature. He died in Paris. He is considered to be the first French romantic poet (though Charles-Julien Lioult de Chênedollé was working on similar innovations at the same time), and was acknowledged by Paul Verlaine and the Symbolists as an important influence.         Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales with sixty-five plates of nondescript animals, birds, lizards, serpents

London: J. Debrett, 1790. Quarto, with an engraved title page and 65 engraved plates; title page water -stained at one corner, some intermittent foxing and toning of the plates; overall a good copy in old full speckled calf, recently rebacked. The most substantial early work of Australian natural history. First edition: the foundation of natural history of the new colony, John White's {i Journal} is a travel and ornithological classic by a medical voyager. John White was chief surgeon of the First Fleet, and was particularly successful in that he overcame serious medical problems in appalling conditions both on the voyage out and when the settlement was founded. He was also a keen amateur naturalist and after arriving at Port Jackson found time to accompany Phillip on two journeys of exploration. On joining the First Fleet he had begun to keep a journal in which he made notes about birds in the new colony. It was this manuscript which formed the nucleus of his journal. The natural history content of the published account makes White's particularly noteworthy amongst the First Fleet journals. Many of the plates were drawn in England by leading natural history artists of the day, such as Sarah Stone, from original sketches done in the colony. White's journal also contains an interesting and valuable account of the voyage from London, with long, detailed accounts of the stops at Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and of the colonial voyages to Norfolk Island. The book was an immediate success, with subscribers alone accounting for seven hundred copies. There has been much discussion over the years regarding detailed variations in the printing of the first edition of this work, but this copy is typical example of the standard configuration most often seen, with the earlier errors of the list of subscribers corrected, and the text describing the female wattled Wattled Bee-eater (for a full discussion see Ferguson, 97; Matthews, {i Birds of Australia}, {i Supplement}; and Wantrup, pp. 75-7). Interestingly, this front endpaper of this copy includes the ownership inscription of a surgeon named Richard Wright dated November 29th 1804; it is indeed curious to see a surgeon's account of the First Fleet owned by another member of the profession.

Part of the Crew of his Majesty's Ship Guardian Endeavouring to Escape in the Boats.

      J. & J. Boydell,, London: 1790 - When the colony of New South Wales was established in 1788, it was expected that supplies from England would arrive at regular intervals. However, one of the first two supply ships never arrived, when disaster overtook H.M.S. Guardian, commanded by Lieut. Edward Riou. The Guardian, laden with two years' provisions for the new colony, left London in July 1789, but was wrecked on an iceberg twelve days out of Cape Town. Three accounts of the disaster were published immediately in 1790, as well as this magnificent aquatint by Robert Dodd (1748-1816), a well-known marine painter of the period. The double-column caption gives a description of the disaster in the form of the text of a letter from Riou to the Admiralty. (Nan Kivell & Spence, p. 265, illus. p. 293). Published July 1st, 1790. Hand colored aquatint, 410 x 600 mm. London, July 1st, 1790 by J. & J. Boydell.

A List of the Flag-Officers of His Majesty’s Fleet: with the Dates of their First Commissions, as Admirals, Vice-Admirals, Rear Admirals, and Captains.

London: 1790 - pp. [12, including initial blank], ff. 40, printed on versos, 8vo, original red morocco, gilt roll tooled borders on sides, flat spine gilt in compartments, lacking lettering piece, a little worn and a few abrasions, engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Pasley inside the front cover, and the pencil signature of another Pasley on a flyleaf, good An unrecorded edition of the List of the Flag-Officers, not in ESTC: of the editions recorded in ESTC, from 1758 on, none are common - no doubt they were discarded as new ones appeared. Sir Thomas Pasley’s motto is suitably bellicose: ‘Pro rege et patria pugnans’. At the end of a long and distinguished career Pasley was promoted admiral of the white on 9 November 1805. In this book he has made several emendations, adding names, noting deaths, and correcting (what must be rather surprising) errors in the printed text. Nelson appears as a Captain, his seniority of 11 June 1779 being 169th.

Bon exemplaire.

Octavo. (215 × 130mm). Untrimmed in later wraps. Title page and first and last leaves somewhat browned, but overall very good. The wraps a little worn and separating at the upper panel. First Edition. Important elogy delivered by the Revolutionary divine, formerly tutor to the children of the Marquis de Choiseul, preacher to the King, and Abbot of Montfort-Lacarre. Dismissed for his radical opinions, Fauchet became a popular speaker in the Parisian sections. He was one of the leaders of the attack on the Bastille, but within four years he had been swept away by the tide of the Terror, guillotined for support of the Caen Federalists and supposed complicity in Charlotte Corday's murder of Marat. Here he speaks to Franklin's philosophical attainments and the political beliefs that had led to his fostering of close connections between America and France. In an appendix Jean-Baptiste Le Roy, physicist, "Frankliniste" improver of lightning-conductors, and later President of the Académie des Sciences, who was an intimate member of Franklin's Passy côterie, discusses of his scientific attainments.
