Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales with sixty-five plates of nondescript animals, birds, lizards, serpents

London: J. Debrett, 1790. Quarto, with an engraved title page and 65 engraved plates; title page water -stained at one corner, some intermittent foxing and toning of the plates; overall a good copy in old full speckled calf, recently rebacked. The most substantial early work of Australian natural history. First edition: the foundation of natural history of the new colony, John White's {i Journal} is a travel and ornithological classic by a medical voyager. John White was chief surgeon of the First Fleet, and was particularly successful in that he overcame serious medical problems in appalling conditions both on the voyage out and when the settlement was founded. He was also a keen amateur naturalist and after arriving at Port Jackson found time to accompany Phillip on two journeys of exploration. On joining the First Fleet he had begun to keep a journal in which he made notes about birds in the new colony. It was this manuscript which formed the nucleus of his journal. The natural history content of the published account makes White's particularly noteworthy amongst the First Fleet journals. Many of the plates were drawn in England by leading natural history artists of the day, such as Sarah Stone, from original sketches done in the colony. White's journal also contains an interesting and valuable account of the voyage from London, with long, detailed accounts of the stops at Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and of the colonial voyages to Norfolk Island. The book was an immediate success, with subscribers alone accounting for seven hundred copies. There has been much discussion over the years regarding detailed variations in the printing of the first edition of this work, but this copy is typical example of the standard configuration most often seen, with the earlier errors of the list of subscribers corrected, and the text describing the female wattled Wattled Bee-eater (for a full discussion see Ferguson, 97; Matthews, {i Birds of Australia}, {i Supplement}; and Wantrup, pp. 75-7). Interestingly, this front endpaper of this copy includes the ownership inscription of a surgeon named Richard Wright dated November 29th 1804; it is indeed curious to see a surgeon's account of the First Fleet owned by another member of the profession.

Part of the Crew of his Majesty's Ship Guardian Endeavouring to Escape in the Boats.

      J. & J. Boydell,, London: 1790 - When the colony of New South Wales was established in 1788, it was expected that supplies from England would arrive at regular intervals. However, one of the first two supply ships never arrived, when disaster overtook H.M.S. Guardian, commanded by Lieut. Edward Riou. The Guardian, laden with two years' provisions for the new colony, left London in July 1789, but was wrecked on an iceberg twelve days out of Cape Town. Three accounts of the disaster were published immediately in 1790, as well as this magnificent aquatint by Robert Dodd (1748-1816), a well-known marine painter of the period. The double-column caption gives a description of the disaster in the form of the text of a letter from Riou to the Admiralty. (Nan Kivell & Spence, p. 265, illus. p. 293). Published July 1st, 1790. Hand colored aquatint, 410 x 600 mm. London, July 1st, 1790 by J. & J. Boydell.

A List of the Flag-Officers of His Majesty’s Fleet: with the Dates of their First Commissions, as Admirals, Vice-Admirals, Rear Admirals, and Captains.

London: 1790 - pp. [12, including initial blank], ff. 40, printed on versos, 8vo, original red morocco, gilt roll tooled borders on sides, flat spine gilt in compartments, lacking lettering piece, a little worn and a few abrasions, engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Pasley inside the front cover, and the pencil signature of another Pasley on a flyleaf, good An unrecorded edition of the List of the Flag-Officers, not in ESTC: of the editions recorded in ESTC, from 1758 on, none are common - no doubt they were discarded as new ones appeared. Sir Thomas Pasley’s motto is suitably bellicose: ‘Pro rege et patria pugnans’. At the end of a long and distinguished career Pasley was promoted admiral of the white on 9 November 1805. In this book he has made several emendations, adding names, noting deaths, and correcting (what must be rather surprising) errors in the printed text. Nelson appears as a Captain, his seniority of 11 June 1779 being 169th.

Bon exemplaire.

Octavo. (215 × 130mm). Untrimmed in later wraps. Title page and first and last leaves somewhat browned, but overall very good. The wraps a little worn and separating at the upper panel. First Edition. Important elogy delivered by the Revolutionary divine, formerly tutor to the children of the Marquis de Choiseul, preacher to the King, and Abbot of Montfort-Lacarre. Dismissed for his radical opinions, Fauchet became a popular speaker in the Parisian sections. He was one of the leaders of the attack on the Bastille, but within four years he had been swept away by the tide of the Terror, guillotined for support of the Caen Federalists and supposed complicity in Charlotte Corday's murder of Marat. Here he speaks to Franklin's philosophical attainments and the political beliefs that had led to his fostering of close connections between America and France. In an appendix Jean-Baptiste Le Roy, physicist, "Frankliniste" improver of lightning-conductors, and later President of the Académie des Sciences, who was an intimate member of Franklin's Passy côterie, discusses of his scientific attainments.

        Poissarde au Costume Tricolor

Poissarde au Costume Tricolor 1790. [Original watercolor on coarse paper.] (10" x 8"), with paper loss on lower right corner extending into bottom image. With two pencil drawings of Napoleon on the reverse, probably drawn from life, one titled "Le general de la grande nation." This charming watercolor is based on the genre "Poissarde" which depicted the fishwife or revendeuse, mostly known for her "uproarious invectives, her picturesque and ever-ready sarcasms against the bourgeois" (Moore). The colorful figure of the "fishmonger" or "fishwife" appeared throughout the 17th and 18th centuries in France as a symbol of working class conscience. Here she appears as a spokeswoman for the lower classes in the times of the Revolution. While literature describes the colorful "Poissarde," actual images are rarely found. Moore notes, "the majority of them exist only in manuscript or in quite inaccessible and rare prints." Reference: Moore, A.P. (1935).         'Geographie'. French children's geographical card game dating from the period of the French Revolution, with cards pertaining to Terres Australes and Etats Unis

France:. 1790 - 1800.. Very good overall. Children's geographical card game with vivid political content, dating from the French Revolution and from just after the American Revolution, as the 38th card, 'Etats Unis' describes Philadelphia as the capital, which was the temporary capital of the United States from 1790 to 1800, while the Federal City was under construction in the District of Columbia. Card V, "La France, Description Politique", refers to the French Revolution and the abolition of the monarchy, as follows: "[La France] a ete gouvernee par soixante-sept Rois de trois races differentes, depuis Pharamond jusqu'a Louis XVI, sous le regne duquel le gouvernement monarchique fut aboli". This card goes on to extol contemporary life in France: "La France est aujourd'hui ... le pays de la terre ou l'art de vivre en societe est cultive avec le plus de succes".. An astonishing claim, given that tens of thousands of Frenchmen had just been dispatched during the reign of terror of 1793 - 1794.& & Card XXXVIII (United States) also gives credit to the French role in winning the American Revolution: "Les Americains, aides par les Francais, proclamerent leur liberte en 1776, et se formerent en republique, sous le nom d'Etats Unis". & & Card XLVIII, "Terres Polaires et Australes", which mentions Nouvelle Hollande and Botany-Bay, and la terre de Diemen. Accompanying Botany Bay, there is a mention of convicts: "Les Anglais ont forme ... une etablissement qu'ils nomment Botany-Bay, ou ils deportent leurs criminels". Casts various aspersions on the inhabitants, both native and convict.& & The game consists of 48 cards describing various countries & geographical features of the world, each one embellished with a small circular portrait of a native, with text below. Other countries include La Russie (Russia), Turquie (Turkey), all the European countries, Arabie (Arabia), La Perse (Persia/Iran), Indies (East Indies), La Chine (China), Islands, Seas and Mountains of Asia, Cafrerie (South Africa), Canada, Amerique (North & South America), Le Mexique, Terre-Ferme et Pays des Amazones, Guyana, Peru, Brazil, Terre Magellanique et Terre de Feu (Patagonia). Not recorded on OCLC.& & In its original pink papered box with manuscript paper label, faded & a bit rubbed, short split at top edge. Cards printed on thick laid card, measuring 2 1/2" x 4". Two cards with rubbed corners, a little dusty but overall in very good condition.

        Liberte de la Presse

Paris:. Ca. 1790.. A four page pamphlet which was possibly included in the French Revolutionary journal "Le Patriote françois", which was published in Paris by Buisson from 1789-1793. It translates approximately as "The people have the right to the freedom to speak, write and publish their sentiments. Freedom of the press can not therefore be subject to any barriers." The last notation references the Declaration of Independence "de Pensylvanie". The French Declaration of the rights of man and the citizen (1789) was inspired by the American Declaration of Independence of 1776 and it remains one of France's founding texts. & & The piece continues with a response letter by M. Lanthenas, a French revolutionary, and the chief translator of Thomas Paine into French. It is sprinkled with the buzz words of the day "Droit; Responsbilite; Nation; Tyrannie; Une Nation Libre; Justice; Verite. Paine spent much of the 1790s in France. Lanthenas' letter concerns the freedom of the press written in the early stages of the French Revolution, and is dated March 24, 1790. At this point, the storming of the Bastille had taken place the preceding summer, the National Assembly had been formed only 9 months earlier, it had published the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizens only 6 months earlier, Louis XVI and his family had been forced to return to Paris from Versailles only five months earlier, and all religious orders had been dissolved only one month earlier! He believed in rejecting the laws of the Ancien Regime in favor of new guidelines which would allow for unlimited freedom of communication of ideas: "La liberte de la presse la plus illimitee est donc de droit divin, pour une nation et pour tous les individus... elle doit donc former la base de toute constitution libre." (The most unlimited freedom of the press is thus a divine right, for a nation and its people... (this freedom) must form the foundation for any free constitution". Disbound, small pen line at upper right corner front page, o/w very good condition. 8vo, 4pp, in French, text in 2 columns, with footnotes, which reference Lanthenas earlier work "Inconveniens du Droit d'Ainesse, etc"; "Tracts concerning the Ancient and only true legal means of National Defense by a Free Militia by Granville Sharp" and describes how to subscribe to the "Journal du Patriote Francois". & & See FRBNF32834106 for "Le Patriote françois [Texte imprimé] : journal libre, impartial et national / par une société de citoyens, & dirigé par J. P. Brissot de Warville". This pamphlet does not appear recorded on the French National Library site by Warville.

"Advertencia" with errata, 1 l. advertisement). 4°, recent full green Oasis morocco, flat spine with crimson morocco lettering piece, gilt letter, marbled endleaves. Overall in clean, crisp, fine condition. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of the Arabic text and Portuguese translation of official state correspondence between North African and Arabian rulers and D. Manoel (1495-1521), D. João III (1521-1557) and their factors. Concentrating on the period between 1503 and 1528, these 58 letters treat territorial disputes, diplomatic negotiations, and the jurisdiction, compatibility and applicability of the Arabic and Portuguese legal systems. The main focus, however, is the East Indian trade: this involved the settlement of private and Crown debts, the protection of Christian merchants in Africa and India and of Arab traders in Portuguese dominions, the safe passage of goods and persons along recognized shipping lanes, and armed reprisals for personal injury. The "Advertencia" leaf has not been present in any other copy we have seen. João de Sousa, who edited and translated these documents, was born in Damascus, Syria, and became the first professor of Arabic at the University of Lisbon, as well as a frequently published member of the Academia Real das Sciencias.---- Innocêncio IV, 41-42.         Palm Trees, c. 1790-1814

0 - This watercolor on paper is from a collection of watercolors and drawings that depicts the natural history (flora and fauna) of Guiana, dating to the early 19th century. The collection appears to pre-date the expeditions of Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk, a German-born explorer for Great Britain who executed geographical, ethnological and botanical studies in various parts of the world in the 1830s and 40s. He traveled to South America, the West Indies, the Dominican Republic and Thailand. Fragments of a manuscript text accompanied these unsigned works of art, suggesting an English author with Guyanese subject matter. Important to note, the colonies of Berbice and the United Colony of Demerara and Essquibo were ceded to Britain in 1814, and unified as British Guiana in 1831. 8.75 x 7.5 in

Londini: sumptibus editoris excudebant M. Ritchie & J. Sammells. 1790-4. "4 volumes, 8vo, stipple-engraved frontis portrait in vol. I, engraved vignette arms of the editor, Henry Homer, on the title-pp.; slightly later full red straight-grain morocco, gilt supralibros of Homer on all covers, and enclosed by double gilt rule, gilt-paneled spines with green morocco labels (faded, and at one time retouched); a very good set. of an ""elegant and a correct edition, with an elaborate index"" (DNB). A pencil note on the flyleaf states that this was Homer's own set, but in the absence of other evidence we make no attribution. The works of Tacitus were not published in their entirety until the 1515 Rome edition, and all editions afterwards stem from this, although its editor, Beroaldi, apparently deviated ""from the true ancient reading"" (Dibdin]. ""A very beautiful and correct edition, forming a conspicuous figure in the list of classics published by the . . . excellent scholar, the late Mr. Homer: it exhibits the pure text of the author, and is accompanied with a copious and valuable index. Some copies are struck off on large paper, and bring a considerable price"" (Dibdin II, 458). This copy with the bookplate of John Sparrow."

Nouvel Atlas Portatit De La Geographie Ancienne (Atlas | Map | North America | South America | De Vaugondy Atlas)

A Paris chez l'Auteur Rue du Foin St. Jacques, Paris 1790 - Size: 11.25 in. x 9.5 in. Contemporary half calf professionally rebacked. Marbled boards. Very light foxing to pages. 52 maps hand colored in outline. Includes two hemisphere maps with North America quite distorted at the North & West. Corners heavily worn. Overall in GOOD condition. Photos available upon request. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688–1766), also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (c.1723–1786), were leading mapmakers in France during the 1700s. In 1757, they published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV. Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as "M.Robert", while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson; from him they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material which they combined with maps and plates acquired after Hubert Jaillot's death in 1712 to form the basis the Atlas Universel. Sources from the Dépôt de la Marine, the official French repository for maritime-related information, were used for their maps of Canada and South America. Like Ortelius and Mercator, the Vaugondy's credited their sources, which has greatly benefited the study of the history of cartography during that period.         The Death of Captn. James Cook. 1791 'Christmas Piece' Broadside dedicated to Lefferts Hagewought by his grandson Samuel Lefferts, early Dutch residents of New York

London:: J. Farrell, No. 7 Paternoster Row, Cheapside,. ca. 1790.. An unrecorded 'Christmas Piece' broadside or children's exercise sheet, with manuscript verse at the center, signed by a young American, "Samuel Lefferts Scripsit", dedicated to his "much respected Grandfather Lefferts Hagewought (sic)", and dated December 24th, 1791. & & Christmas broadsides were published and printed in London by John Farrell during the reign of George III, with contemporary and historical engravings around the perimeter, a large central engraving at the top, and blank space at the center for the scholar to write some lines of verse to the recipient. These Christmas Pieces were also for the student to show off his penmanship, and possibly win a school prize; they were referred to as "scripsits". In this case the student is an [American] young man, Samuel Lefferts. He has written 12 lines of verse having to do with the birth of Jesus and he dedicates the Christmas piece to his grandfather. [See Journal of the British Archeological Assoc, Vol 29, 1873; from p 73, article "The Christmas Piece" by Mr. H. Syer Cuming.]& & The Lefferts family were prominent early Dutch settlers, some of the earliest in Brooklyn, whose roots go back to Dutch colonist Pieter Janse Hagewout, who arrived in 1660, and settled in the farming village of Vlacke Bos, or Flatbush. The original Lefferts Homestead was destroyed in the American Revolution by American soldiers to prevent its use by invading British soldiers. Samuel Lefferts is possibly born Long Island 1779, died 1838 age 65. "Grandfather" Leffert Hagewout is possibly the father of Marytie Hagewout b. 1733 in Jamaica, Queens, NY (mother of the same name). We have been unable to establish the familial relationship, but further research in Lefferts-Haghwout Family by Lefferd M.A. Hautwout or Genealogy of the Lefferts Family by Teunis G. Bergan should establish the connection. The engravings used to decorate the sheet are derivative views, based on engravings used for something akin to Alexander Hogg's views in Bankes Geography. At the head is the view of "The Death of Capt. James Cook" . This is flanked by columns on the left and right with three engravings each, on the left "A Man of the Sandwich Islands"; "A Man of the Sandwich Islands Dancing"; and "A Man of Mangea". On the right are: "A Woman of the Sandwich Islands"; "A Young Woman of Otaheite Dancing"; and "A Woman of Eaoo". At the foot is the scene of hunters shooting at seals, with an oval rule delineating the blank in which the scholar has recorded his name and the date. Below this: "Printed & Published by J. Farrell Printer, No. 7 Paternoster Row, Cheapside." The broadside was not located in Trove, the State Library of New South Wales, OCLC, the British Library or Beddie. With contemporary folds. 15 X 18 1/2". The image of Cook's death measures 7 1/4 x 3 1/2". A long tear up the center & some water marks expertly repaired, but visible, backed on acid free tissue. & & A rare intersection between the legend of Captain Cook and Colonial New York.

7 Paternoster Row, Cheapside."The broadside was not located in Trove, the State Library of New South Wales, OCLC, the British Library or Beddie. With contemporary folds. 15 X 18 1/2". The image of Cook's death measures 7 1/4 x 3 1/2". A long tear up the center & some water marks expertly repaired, but visible, backed on acid free tissue. A rare intersection between the legend of Captain Cook and Colonial New York.

Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales with sixty-five plates of nondescript animals, birds, lizards, serpents.

      J. Debrett, London 1790 - Quarto, with an engraved title page and 65 engraved plates; title page water -stained at one corner, some intermittent foxing and toning of the plates; overall a good copy in old full speckled calf, recently rebacked.
