Exlibris of explorer & author Wilfred Thesiger. First Edition. Bruce spent five years (1768-73) travelling extensively in upper Egypt and Abyssinia, and reached the source of the Blue Nile, following it to its confluence with the White Nile. His history and description of Abyssinia are particularly valuable, as the country had been visited only once by a European (Poncet) in the previous one hundred and fifty years. Bruce immediately won the respect and admiration of the Abyssinians on account of his imposing physical appearance and manner, his courage, knowledge of Geez, and horsemanship, as well as his acquired skill in medicine, which allowed him to save some members of the royal family of Abyssinia from smallpox. His narrative also contains sections on the history and religion of Egypt, Indian trade, the invention of the alphabet, and an appendix (Volume V), entitled Select Specimens of Natural History, describing and illustrating various plants, birds, animals, and insects, including the rhinoceros, hyaena, fennec, and lynx. All of the maps and plates of natural history subjects, artifacts, antiquities, and monuments are based on Bruce?'s own drawings and those of his companion, Italian draughtsman, Luigi Balugani. Bruce believed he had discovered the source of the true Nile when he reached the springs of the Blue Nile in 1770. "He had not reached the source of the true Nile, but only that of its considerable tributary. He was also in error…in regarding himself as the first European who had reached these fountains…There is a sense, however, in which Bruce may be more justly esteemed the discoverer of the fount of the Blue Nile than Paez, who stumbled upon it by accident, and, absorbed by missionary zeal, thought little of the exploit to which Bruce had dedicated his life." (DNB) The fame and interest of Bruce?'s travels are due in part to the vivid and robust style in which his narrative is written: "He will always remain the poet, and his work the epic, of African travel." (DNB) Blackmer 221. Brunet I 1283. Cox I 388-89. Gay 44. Ibrahim-Hilmy I 91. Nissen, ZBI, 617. cfMendelssohn I 311.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

AN AUTHENTIC ACCOUNT OF THE CONVERSION AND EXPERIENCE OF A NEGRO [caption title]

London: Printed by T. Wilkins, [nd, but ca. 1790].. 4pp. printed on folded sheet. Very good. One of several edition of this short account of the Christian conversion of an African-American in late 18th- century New York. The anonymous author says he encountered the man when visiting a plantation. Falling into conversation with him, he discovered the man was enamored of the Bible and a practising Christian, nut more out of fear than of joy: his master, a Quaker, had taught his slaves to read but not encouraged them in religion. The narrator asks the man questions about doctrinal issues such as "the merit of works, the justification of a sinner, the power of grace, and the like," and is delighted with the "heavenly wisdom that God had put into the mind of this sweet Negro." The pamphlet ends with an exhortation to the reader, who has been more privileged that the black man, to do likewise: "Reader, this Negro was a Christian; a Bible Christian. He had not indeed the outward form of godliness, but he had the power - How is it with you?" ESTC locates five total editions, two of them American, two London, and one in Edinburgh. All are scarce; this edition with fewer than ten locations.

[Np, but St. Domingue, probably Au Cap. 1790].. 74pp. Modern three-quarter calf and boards. Repaired paper loss in titlepage approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter, affecting first three letters of title. Light soiling on titlepage and second leaf; very minor foxing. Good. Untrimmed, several signatures unopened. "A partisan account of the disturbances at Port-au-Prince and Saint Marc during July and August, 1790" - Garrett. Though Bissainthe indicates that this imprint is Parisian, the crudeness and nature of the printing is such that we believe it more likely that it was actually printed in Saint Domingue. From imprints handled by this firm we know that there was a rich print culture in St. Domingue on the verge of the revolution. There were presses at St. Marc, Port-au- Prince, and Cap Français, with probably two or three different printers at each of the last two. All Caribbean printing is quite rare. Only nine copies of this work located in OCLC. BISSAINTHE 7687. SABIN 75187. GARRETT, FRENCH COLONIAL QUESTION 159. OCLC 20694712, 77725342.

Smooth back florets and nets. At the end of the convocation of the States-General in 1789 and recent events, the author expresses his thoughts on the future of the people, the clergy, the king, the nobility ... As a preamble, Bernardin de Saint Pierre expresses doubt as to the decisions of the National Assembly, which does not in itself make the right decisions for the people. His political thought revolves around a balance of powers. The prose of the author is characterized, even in this political essay by a very personal tone of sincerity, the speech is peppered with many autobiographical touches. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay; with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island... to which are added the Journals of Lieuts. Shortland, Watts, Ball & Capt. Marshall... Second Edition

London: John Stockdale, 1790. Quarto, portrait, engraved title, seven folding engraved charts and 46 engraved plates, the earlier state of the 'Kangooroo' plate, with Stockdale's Chart of New Holland in fine hand-coloured state, some browning and offsetting; a very good tall copy in contemporary calf (scuffed), rebacked mounting the original spine with the original crimson label. A handsome copy of Phillip's important account of the First Fleet in its rare and much expanded second edition. This second edition of Phillip was extensively revised and re-organised by its publisher Stockdale who had been unhappy with the slightly disorganised nature of his 1789 first edition; apart from the revisions he adds a really substantial and significant appendix, largely reprinting his own publication, the anonymous 1787 History of New Holland. It is accompanied by the fine "New Chart of New Holland", coloured in outline and with an inset map of Botany Bay, that he had prepared for that 1787 publication. It has its own List of Subscribers which is fairly modest, numerous booksellers making single-digit orders - apart from Symonds, presumably H.D. Symonds the radical and opportunistic operator, early publisher of Barrington, who orders a staggering 400 copies. Could this be a misprint?         Group Of Copy Letters From The Woolwich Military Science Laboratory, 1790

London: Woolwich Arsenal, 1790., 1790. Fourteen large folio pages, handwritten in neat script with one hand drawn illustration showing the profile of the building as it is to be equipped with a special chimney for the new sulphur refinery - "to carry off the dangerous effluvia". Minor chips and tears to edges, minor spotting. The letters were, apparently, rescued from a bonfire when the storage building at Woolwich Arsenal was demolished in the 1970s. As a group, they provide a view into the daily workings of the most important military research establishment in the British Isles during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The letters make reference to Major William Congreve (later Sir), the Comptroller of the Royal Laboratories at the Royal Arsenal, who ten years after these papers were written won substantial renown as a result of his work on rocket technology. These Congreve rockets, heavily based on Mysorean rockets used against the British East India Company, were used to great effect in subsequent wars, including the Napoleonic Wars. Included in these documents are lists of requirements, including personnel and various ingredients for making cartridges, documents calculating the expense of powder for the war office, and discussion concerning the construction of various engines and pieces of machinary, such as the aforementioned sulphur refinery.

Notamento di alcuni passi ricavati dalle Memorie del Duca di Sulli, primo ministro del Re Enrico IV. detto il Grande.

Italy, c.1790.. 8°. 170 pages. Hardcover / Decorative 19th century binding with gilt lettering on spine. 18th century, extensive manuscript - excerpt of Sully's memoirs.. Maximilien de Bethune, first Duke of Sully (13 December 1560 - 22 December 1641) was the doughty soldier, French minister, staunch Huguenot and faithful right-hand man who assisted Henry IV of France in the rule of France. Sully was not popular. He was hated by most Roman Catholics because he was a Protestant, by most Protestants because he was faithful to the king, and by all because he was a favorite, and was seen as selfish, obstinate and rude. He amassed a large personal fortune, and his jealousy of all other ministers and favorites was extravagant. Nevertheless he was an excellent man of business, inexorable in punishing malversation and dishonesty on the part of others, and opposed to the ruinous court expenditure which was the bane of almost all European monarchies in his day. He was gifted with executive ability, with confidence and resolution, with fondness for work, and above all with deep devotion to his master. He was implicitly trusted by Henry IV and proved himself the most able assistant of the king in dispelling the chaos into which the religious and civil wars had plunged France. To Sully, next to Henry IV, belongs the credit for the happy transformation in France between 1598 and 1610, by which agriculture and commerce were benefited and foreign peace and internal order were reestablished.         VIE DU ROI LOUIS XVI

1790 - (2), 82 pp. collation (alpha), A-E8, F. Note that alpha and F are 1 leave folded around the spine! Original grey wrappers and single thread binding. As such a good example of original state of the time. An early pamphlet, to be dated very late in 1790, as the supplement discusses the arrest of the Marquis de Favras on December 25. On Oktober 6 the king moved from Versailles to the Tuileries in the centre of Paris were he was kept more or less prisoner until his decapitation in early 1793. The pamphlet is a standard biography of the King; unusual however is the drunken state of the king referred to on p. 53 [suggesting Marie Antoinette giving him so much wine as necessary to make him sign everything she wanted] and the discussion of the quantity of Tokai taken, referred to on p. 68 and 75. Much less agressive than later pamphlets (see for instance Christies 6905/140 (dated 1793) speaking in terms of "Roi scélérat et stupide", thus being the end of the traumatic process of a nation deciding to decapitate its king. Not in Tourneux (IV 20860 is comparable, but does not carry ROI in title). Not in OCLC. In Europe 1 copy at KUN (which also shows a titlepage in NCC identical to our copy) and other copies in München (BSB) and Strassbourg (Bibliothèque Municipale). HOWEVER NONE OF THOSE IN THE ORIGINAL STATE [UNCUT AND IN WRAPPERS] OF THE COPY PRESENTED HERE. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Treatise on the Culture of the Vine Together with new hints on the formation of vineyards in England

York: Printed by G. Peacock for the author, 1790. Quarto, five engraved plates (three folding), closed tear to p. 149; a most attractive copy in nineteenth-century straight grained red half morocco, label to front board, spine gilt, armorial bookplate of Vane Londonderry. "cultivating the Vine... has long been one of the first objects of my attention..." First edition: "a practical, well-written and beautifully printed manual" (Hyams).William Speechly (1735-1819) was a famous English horticulturalist, who had made his name perfecting the growing of pineapples (an eighteenth-century English craze) in England. At this point in his career Speechly was gardener at Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire, the house of the third Duke of Portland, to whom he dedicated this book. Speechly describes some 50 varieties of grape, and discusses all manner of practical questions relating to vineyards, including a long discussion on hothouses. Although printed in York, it is interesting to note that the London distributors included Nicol (who published Cook's third voyage), as well as both Stockdale and Debrett who, at the time, were publishing the First Fleet journals. It has been assumed that the first edition was in fact an undated edition at London, but this seems unlikely as the London edition is an expanded work, and Speechly was based in Nottinghamshire and had connections to Yorkshire (his first gardening position had been at Castle Howard). From the library of Charles William Vane, third Marquess of Londonderry.

Brussels, printed by B. Le Francq, book-seller. 1790. 4 vols., 12mo., engraved frontispiece in vol.I and three further engraved plates in each volume (13 plates in all), text throughout in parallel English and French, (4) + 217 + (1) and (4) + 239 + (1) and 261 + (1) and (4) + 247 + (1)pp., uniformly bound in late 18th century catspaw calf, spines fully gilt with contrasting labels, silk markers. The bindings all with wear and some insect damage, but all the volumes are fine and crisp internally. A rare Brussels printing of this history for children. (ESTC & OCLC find other complete sets only at Yale + BL + Cambridge + Augsburg Un. + B.N.France). Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (1755-1794) was a French poet and romance writer. 'To modern readers, Florian is chiefly known as the author of petty fables well suited as reading for the young, but his contemporaries praised him also for his poetical and pastoral novels. Numa Pompilius,> which first appeared in 1786, was an undisguised imitation of Fénelon's Télemaque.> The Osborne collection at Toronto Public Library seems to have only Florian's Select fables> (1806: 1st pub. in 1792) and his William Tell> (1823 ed.), but no printing of Numa Pompilius.> Numa Pompilius (753-673 B.C.) himself was the legendary second King of Rome who succeeded Romulus in 715 B.C.

        A Treatise On Theatres

London: Printed for the author and sold by J. & J. Taylor at the Architectural Library, 1790. First edition. Hardcover. Later three quarter half red morocco and marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers. Very good. 94 pages in text. 30 x 25 cm. Title, half title, introduction and contents list. Thirteen plates, four folding. An architectural treatise in which the author attempted to discover the principles that should govern theatre construction, taking into consideration a theatre's form, function, size, beauty and acoustics. The thirteen large and detailed plates display plans of various theatres-- from Pompeii to Covent Garden-- plus Saunders' own design for an ideal theatre; all but the last two plates are copies of those in Dumont's Salles de Spectacles (ca. 1767). Saunders is chiefly known as the architect who enlarged Lord Mansfield's residence in Highgate, and as the designer of the extension to the British Museum's Montagu House (torn down in 1851), in which the Townley marbles were housed. Saunders was also one of the founders of the British Museum. Ancient theatres depicted in the plates include Pompeii, Greek and Roman Theatres, Bacchus at Athens, Marcellus at Rome, Vincenza and Parma. At the time of this publication he had just completed two major theatres. RIBA 2908. Bookplates of Ogden Codman and architect Thomas Chawner's signature on the title, who retired in 1845 [see; COLVIN p.212]. One fold-out plate repaired with archival tape. Plates generally clean and sound, raised bands spine panels decorated in gilt motifs, modest extremity rubbing.
