DECLARATION DE MONSIEUR LE GOUVERNEUR GENERAL, SUR L'INTERPRETATION DES DECRETS DES 8 & 28 MARS.

Port-au-Prince: De L'Imprimerie de Mozard, 1790. - 10pp. Original paper wrappers, gathered signatures. Very clean. Untrimmed and partially unopened. Very good. A statement by Peynier, governor- general of the colony Saint Dominigue, concerning the decrees set forth by the National Assembly and their application and effect on the colony. These decrees came at a crucial time for Saint Domingue as the French Revolution gained momentum and began to exert a real influence on the colonies. Many of the large plantation owners hoped to bring about independence from France and to assert a more powerful role for the aristocracy of the colony. Peynier's tenure was marked by his loyalty to the state and his opposition to the Assembly with whom he fruitlessly tried to negotiate. An interesting declaration prepared just as the French Revolution was gaining momentum and at the cusp of the slave revolt which would soon follow in Saint Domingue. Rare, with only two copies located in OCLC, at Columbia and new York Public Library.

        [Marshal Turenne]

1790. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of two creased tears on the right margin. Tiny tear on top margin. Image size: 18 3/8 x 15 inches. A fine proof impression of Bouteloup's striking portrait of Marshal Turenne, one of France's most celebrated military heroes. Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne was one of France's greatest military commanders. The son of the duc de Bouillon, Turenne was born in Sedan in 1611. By the time of his death in 1675, Turenne had risen to the rank of Marshal of France, after leading a career that inspired Napoleon to list him as one of France's most important captains. He showed his capabilities during the Thirty Years War, when he distinguished himself with countless victories, and played a pivotal role in the Dutch Wars under Louis XIV. He was killed at the battle of Sasbach in 1675, and his remains were later moved by Napoleon to Les Invalides in Paris. This triumphant engraving by Louis Alexandre Bouteloup reproduces a celebrated sculpture of Turenne by Robert Guillaume Dardel. Dardel was the pupil of Augustin Pajou, but he did not become a member of the Academie Royale until 1791. He exhibited primarily at the Salon de Correspondence, and since he was denied access to the royal marble his works are mostly modeled in terracotta and bronze. Dardel cast this commemorative bronze statue of Turenne for his patron, Prince Louis-Joseph de Conde, in 1785, and it is considered one of his most successful works.

Letter from the Governor General of St. Domingue, Louis- Antoine Thomassin de Peinier, to the lawyer Chachereau, concerning the Association de Jeunes Citoyens (Association of Young Citizens) in Port-au-Prince. The Governor General expresses here his concern about the trouble the group seems to have created; Chachereau's response is also printed. In 1790 the colony of St. Domingue was a tinderbox waiting to catch the fire of revolution and independence, and Peinier certainly had his hands full.

A Narrative of the Mutiny, on Board His MajestyÂ’s Ship Bounty; and the Subsequent Voyage of the Crew in the ShipÂ’s Boat.

Dublin: L. White..., 1790. vii, 144 pp. HereÂ’s a fun item. Dublin was a great reprint center - the Dover Press of its day. This is a Dublin reprint of BlighÂ’s narrative, printed the same year as the English first edition, but without plates. Hill notes, “Unlike most Dublin printings, this Irish first edition is rarely found.” - Hill 134. Indeed, ABPC shows only a single copy of this Dublin 1790 edition appearing at auction since 1975. A very nice copy complete with half title, bound in quarter calf over marbled boards.

CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES: AT THE SECOND SESSION,...AN ACT TO CONTINUE IN FORCE AN ACT PASSED AT THE LAST SESSION OF CONGRESS, INTITLED, "AN ACT TO REGULATE PROCESSES IN THE COURTS OF THE UNITED STATES." [caption title]

[New York], 1790. Removed from a sammelband volume, with stab holes along the left edge. Near fine. A very rare printing - only the second copy located - of the first extension of the law that regulated procedures in the United States Supreme Court and in lesser federal courts. The U.S. Constitution provided for the creation of the Supreme Court, but did not include provisions for the establishment of any other judicial system. This was addressed by the Judiciary Act of 1789, passed on Sept. 24 of that year, one of the first acts of the first Congress. On Sept. 29, 1789 the Congress passed a law making rules for judicial procedure in those courts, especially governing the issuance of "writes and processes" and the rates of fees. The present act extends the provisions of that law until the end of the next session of Congress. NAIP and Bristol locate only one copy of this act, at the South Carolina Archives. Rare.

Bookplate (Sir Edmund Antrobus). First edition.Ferrieres-Sauveboeuf was a French diplomat who for many years travelled throughout the Levant, Persia, Arabia and Caucasia including several visits to Constantinople. He was fluent in Turkish and Persian. His account is rich with information of the countries, people, characters, religion, etc. and mainly based on his own observations. Further he records much details about the Turkish-Russian war of 1788-9. He was engaged to undertake secret missions in the area under the ministry of Vergennes who earlier had been French ambassador to the Porte (from 1755). It might explain his loyalty to Vergennes and the vitriolic attacks against Comte de Choiseul Gouffier who was the ambassador in Constantinople at the time (1784-91). Atabey 428 (second ed.).         PROCLAMATION DE M. LE LIEUTENANT GENERAL AU GOUVERNEMENT, CONCERNANT LES TROUBLES ACTUELS DE LA COLONIE, EN DATE DU 12 NOVEMBRE 1790

Port-au-Prince, 1790. Single folded sheet. One pencil underlining, else fine. Untrimmed. A rare Haitian printing related to an early skirmish which precipitated the beginning of the Haitian Revolution. Philibert-François Rouxel de Blanchelande, French general and governor of Saint Domingue from the end of 1790 through the revolution, led French Royalist forces against the rebel Haitians. He eventually lost Haiti to the revolutionaries, and eventually met the guillotine in Paris in 1793. Here Rouxel addresses the small revolt led by Vincent Ogé, a wealthy free Haitian who attempted to secure voting rights for free men of color in Haiti. Rouxel refused to allow Ogé's request. As a result, Ogé organized between 250 and 300 free men of color who successfully repelled several detachments of colonial militia in October 1790, before being driven into Spanish-controlled Santo Domingo in November, the month this proclamation was printed. Eventually, Ogé himself was captured, imprisoned, then executed, broken on the wheel in the public square in Cap-Français on February 6, 1791, after which he became a martyr to the cause of Haitian independence. An important piece related to early stirrings of the Haitian Revolution, which blew wide open just a few months later, in April 1791. Only one copy recorded in OCLC, at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. All early printing from the 18th century Caribbean is rare, especially those that mention revolutionaries by name.

An Essay on Naval Tactics, Systematical and Historical... In Four Parts.

London: T. Cadell, 1790, 1797. 2 vols. 4to. xii, (5)-165 pp.; ix, (5)-34; 29; 61 pp. 30 and 22 b/w engraved plates, some with hand coloring. This was Nelson's handbook at Trafalgar. It is the first effort by an Englishman to systematize naval tactics with theories based on actual engagements. Clerk?'s widely studied and influential work was written at the time of a movement for tactical reform within the Royal Navy. He drew on numerous historical examples, including several in the American Revolution: Arbuthnot off the Chesapeake (March 1781); Graves off the Chesapeake (September 1781); and Rodney and DeGrasse (1782). Nelson fought the Battle of Trafalgar by Clerk?'s principles. ?"This must be considered Clerk?'s grandest achievement.?" -D.N.B. Part I was privately printed in 1782, and finally published in 1790. Parts II-IV were published in 1797. This is, therefore, the first complete collection of Clerk?'s writings, which were reprinted in their entirety in 1804 and several times thereafter. Not in Neeser or Sabin, in spite of the American interest. Corbett, "Signals and Instructions", pp. 377-78. Smith, "Navies of the American Revolution", 349 (citing only the 3rd edition of 1827). Adams & Waters 360. Two volumes in original paper boards, rebacked with paper in contemporary style, with paper labels. Pages are clean and untrimmed. Plates in vol. I show light worming in two spots, not affecting images. Outer edge of text in vol. II is waterstained, not intruding on text block. Both volumes of this set bear the contemporary engraved bookplate of H.R. Glynn who, at the date of publication, had attained the rank of Post Captain. He became a full admiral in 1846. (See O?'Byrne p. 401) In all a remarkable set of a scarce and important work in contemporary binding.

The whole proceedings on the trial of an information exhibited ex officio, by the King's Attorney General, against John Stockdale; for a libel on the House of Commons, tried in the Court of King's Bench Westminster, on Wednesday, the ninth of December, 1789, before the Right Hon. Lloyd Lord Kenyon, Chief Justice of England. Taken in short hand by Joseph Gurney. To which is subjoined, an argument in support of the rights of juries.

London: John Stockdale, 1790. 8vo., xi + (i) + 228 + (16)pp., complete with the final 8 leaves of Stockdale advertisements, a large copy with generous margins, in contemporary marbled boards, now rebacked in plain calf, with printed spine label, entirely uncut. A very good copy indeed sometime in a subscription library with a borrowing slip (completed with names and dates of borrowing) on front free endpaper. First edition. McCoy (Freedom of the Press>) S.656. 'Stockdale, a London bookseller, was brought to trial on the complaint of Mr. Fox for publishing the Rev. Mr. Logan's pamphlet, A Review of the Principal Charges against Warren Hastings, Esquire, Late Governor General of Bengal.> The pamphlet was in defence of Mr. Hastings and implied criticism of Parliament in handling the impeachment. Thomas Erskine's plea for the defence embodied many of the liberal principles of free speech and rights of juries in libel trials, for which he became famous. His ideas on the latter were embodied in the Fox Libel Act, passed two years later. Judge Kenyon instructed the jury to 'look at the whole book' in passing judgment. Stockdale was acquitted.' [McCoy] Stockdale himself pronounced the verdict to be one of considerable moment. 'It may therefore with the greatest truth be observed', he writes, 'that by the decision on this prosecution, the Freedom of the Press, and the Liberty of the Subject, are fully secured'.         AN AUTHENTIC ACCOUNT OF THE CONVERSION AND EXPERIENCE OF A NEGRO [caption title]

London, 1790. folded sheet. Very good. One of several edition of this short account of the Christian conversion of an African-American in late 18th- century New York. The anonymous author says he encountered the man when visiting a plantation. Falling into conversation with him, he discovered the man was enamored of the Bible and a practising Christian, nut more out of fear than of joy: his master, a Quaker, had taught his slaves to read but not encouraged them in religion. The narrator asks the man questions about doctrinal issues such as "the merit of works, the justification of a sinner, the power of grace, and the like," and is delighted with the "heavenly wisdom that God had put into the mind of this sweet Negro." The pamphlet ends with an exhortation to the reader, who has been more privileged that the black man, to do likewise: "Reader, this Negro was a Christian; a Bible Christian. He had not indeed the outward form of godliness, but he had the power - How is it with you?" ESTC locates five total editions, two of them American, two London, and one in Edinburgh. All are scarce; this edition with fewer than ten locations.

(London: Printed for the Society of Antiquaries by John Nichols, 1790). Hardcover. Very good. Published as part of 'A Collection of Ordinances and Regulations of the Royal Household, made in divers reigns, from Edward III to William and Mary, and also Receipts in Ancient Cookery'. 4to. This copy does not retain the original pagination but is numbered from 1 to 52, and seems to be the variant issued for separate sale. (Copies known to be extracted from the Collection apparently retained the pagination of the Collection, 425-476.) Bound in a mid-19th century binding of dark green pebbled cloth, interleaved with blanks, and with a printed paper spine label (nearly perished). The edition retains the orthography of the recipes, which the anonymous editor believes date no later than the early 15th century. Recipes include 'Nombules of a Deer', 'Farsure for Hares', 'Browet of Alemayne', 'Pejons Stewart', 'Goos in Hochepot' etc. A very good copy. With a couple of well worn 19th century printed slips of paper laid in, presumably once used as bookmarks. See Lowndes I, 52.

ClerkÂ’s widely studied and influential work was written at the time of a movement for tactical reform within the Royal Navy. He drew on numerous historical examples, including several in the American Revolution: Arbuthnot off the Chesapeake (March 1781); Graves off the Chesapeake (September 1781); and Rodney and DeGrasse (1782). Nelson fought the Battle of Trafalgar by ClerkÂ’s principles. “This must be considered ClerkÂ’s grandest achievement.” -D.N.B. Part I was privately printed in 1782, and finally published in 1790. Parts II-IV were published in 1797. This is, therefore, the first complete collection of ClerkÂ’s writings, which were reprinted in their entirety in 1804 and several times thereafter. (See OÂ’Byrne p. 401) In all a remarkable set of a scarce and important work in contemporary binding.
