        Zemirot Yisra'el

Berlin: Verlag der Jüdischen Freyschule (Hevrat Hinukh Ne'arim), 1785. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. 2 vols. 47 leaves, (15), (8), 71 leaves, 58 leaves, (4). Wood boards with gilded decorated boarders and stamped designs and title-label on spine. Red edges all around. Decorative marbled endpapers. Green book markers. Book of Psalms in Hebrew with the German translation by Moses Mendelssohn. Hebrew commentaries by Obadiah Sforno and Joel Loewe. This work was printed in four parts from 1785 to 1790. Includes a list of subscribers from Jewish communities across Europe. Foldout pictures of musical instruments. Each part opens with a piece of modern Hebrew poetry modeled after Psalms. This work was part of the Biur project started by Moses Mendelssohn and continued after his death in 1786. Its purpose was to offer a German translation of the Bible and commentary for Jewish school children. It exemplifies some of the different faces of the early Haskalah (Enlightenment) movement. We see the pious desire to improve biblical literacy. Yet underneath this was an attempt to replace Yiddish with German and thus allow Jews to become better integrated into general society. There is also a nationalist element here with Psalms placed as the foundation for a revived Jewish literary culture to match the emerging German Romantic literary culture. Text in Hebrew and Judeo-German. Second volume boards slightly bent. Israel Zinberg, "The Berlin Haskalah" pg. 185 and 232.

En Real Cedula de 10 de Marzo de este año se ha servido S. M. erigir y aprobar una ponderosa Compañia para el Comercio de Filipinas y demas partes de la Asia

      - The extremely rare Mexican-printed Decree announcing the creation of the Real Compañia de Filipinas. 1785. Mexico. Broadsheet in folio (600 mm x 430 mm). Damp staining to upper margin and center, else good –especially considered the rarity and use destined for. Printed on two conjoined sheets of official stamped paper; signed by Joseph de Gorraes. 4,600 $ First American publication of the Decree announcing the creation of the Real Compañia de Filipinas, one of the most significant Borbonic reforms aimed at improving the conditions of trade with the Philippines and other parts of Asia. This imprint, given by the Viceroy of New Spain, also contains the full text of King Charles III decree, with the outlines of the conformation of the company, first printed in Madrid in the same year under the title Real Cedula de ereccion de la Compañia de Filipinas.ç Needless to say, the creation of the powerful and even autarkic Royal Company of the Philippines affected not only the Philippine´s, but also the overall terms of trade with the region, as from now on, the Company –granted the monopoly of trade- would engage in direct commerce with Spain –affecting other monopolies in the Empire. The only exception was the Manila-Acapulco galleons. Another significant factor in the creation of the company was that it liberated the trade between Manila and China and India. As with other attempts to control commerce, it had a short life and was permanently abolished in 1834, with periods of inactivity during its existence. Not in Medina, Mexico. Medina, Filipinas 538 (for the Madrid edition). Palau 249957 (for the Madrid edition). [Attributes: First Edition]

Paris: Chez Buisson, 1785. First French Edition n. This is an unsurpassable copy of the French translation of the first book on Kentucky, including the first published biography of Daniel Boone. A schoolteacher, historian, surveyor, and one of the founders of Cincinnati, Filson (1753?-88) had acquired some 13,500 acres in the Kentucky territory through purchase and military land warrants. Despite the fact that Crawford's Defeat was just two years before (a major rout of U. S. forces by American Indians in the region), Filson's first-hand account portrayed Kentucky as a peaceful and fertile land, ready for settlement (especially his land). The book sold well, but the accompanying map dedicated to George Washington (sold separately) flew off the shelves. Filson's work did much to encourage settlement to the Kentucky territory and he is credited with recognizing the region, especially the ports of Natchez and New Orleans, as essential to the future economic expansion of the country; in this, he anticipated the Louisiana Purchase by 18 years. No doubt the economic dimension was also what prompted his work to be translated into French less than a year later. The French still had extensive holdings throughout the North American West, still had a close relationship with the very young United States, and a significant number of "American" pioneers were French. The French edition expands on Filson's account, including Congressional records related to Kentucky and additional information on American Indians in the territory. It also includes the much-desired map bound-in. This book is not unheard of at auction, but to see a copy like ours, complete with half title and map, and in a contemporary binding that appears almost unused, is definitely uncommon.. 203 x 128 mm. (8 x 5 1/8"). 2 p.l., xvi, 234 pp.Translated by M. Parraud. First French Edition. Refined contemporary sheep, covers framed by plain and decorative gilt rolls, flat spine heavily gilt in compartments with alternating ribbon and star patterns, tail compartment with monogram of "J S G," red morocco label, marbled endpapers. With woodcut head- and tailpieces and a large engraved folding map of Kentucky. Howes 129; Field 537; Sabin 24338. Minor spots of foxing in a few places, tiny closed tear at crease of map (no text affected), but still incredibly clean and fresh, and, in all, AN OUTSTANDING COPY, THE BINDING REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED.         Wall map of the world - Clouet, Mondhare, 1785.

STUNNING WALL MAP OF THE WORLD"Carte Generale de la Terre ou Mappe Monde avec les Quatres Principaux Systemes . . .' Copper engraving by Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet, published in 1785 by Louis Joseph Mondhare. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 96,5 x 123 cm.Dramatically composed world map, in which mythological figures support the two hemispheres with the solstice. Although its baroque decoration depicts biblical scenes, the map itself bows to modernity by including the tracks of the major Pacific voyages: Jacob Le Maire, Ferdinand Magellan, and Abel Tasman. It is an excellent view of the world as it was known just prior to the great transoceanic explorations that were being launched at the time the map was issued. The Clouet/Mondhare map of the world is one of the most decorative double hemisphere wall maps published in the second half of the 18th century. The map continues the French aristocratic tradition popularised during the reign of Louis XIV. In this grand tradition, the map serves the dual purpose of being both a spectacular object, utilised by the French aristocracy of the 18th century in decorating libraries and salons, and a statement of the worldliness of its owners, depicting the progress of the exploration of the world and scientific models of the known universe, in a perfect marriage with imagery from the classical world and scenes from the Old Testament. The map provides a fine depiction of the most up-to-date information, showing the discoveries of Hawaii and the southeastern coastline of Australia, the earlier routes of numerous 17th and 18th Century explorers are noted, with particular emphasis given to the explorations of Abel Tasman in the Southern Hemisphere, both in New Zealand and Australia. While the routes of many major explorer"s are depicted, publisher Mondhare has retained the mythical depiction of the Sea of the West in North America and offers a number of tantalising options for a northwest passage, while also including a massive nascent depiction of Alaska and the Aleutian Archipelago, which was then at the end of a 40 year period of debate between the theories of the Paris based De L"Isle family of mapmakers, the English cartographer Thomas Jefferys and the Russian Academy. The map is embellished with eight small circular astronomical diagrams including images of lunar and solar eclipses and the known solar system. In the middle below the hemispheres, a model shows us tropics and meridians. The episodes from the Old Testament are in twenty vignettes with descriptive text in French and Spanish. Clockwise from the upper left: the story of Creation, Adam and Eve in Paradise; the Fall of and Punishment of Mankind after disobeying God by eating from the forbidden fruit; Noah"s Ark, where God told Noah to enter the ark with his household and the animals, the ark being afloat throughout The Deluge before it came to rest on the Mountains of Ararat; the Tower of Babel, where man sought to build a tower with its top in the sky, to make a name for themselves and where God confounded their speech so that they could no longer understand each other and scattered them around the world; Abraham who"s belief was tested by commanding the sacrifice of his son Isaac; Jacob blessing his sons; the glory of Joseph with his prediction of seven years of abundance and seven years of famine; the Tables of the Law inscribed with the Ten Commandments when Moses ascended Mount Sinai; the solar eclipse; the death of Samson in the temple of the Philistines; the victory of David over Goliath; Elijah riding his chariot of fire to heaven; Daniel in the lions" den; Job, struck by misfortune, sitting on a dunghill, but despite all his trials faithful to God; Jonah encouraging the Ninevites to do penitence; summoned by archangel Raphael, Tobias Catching a Fish; and lastly the story of Judith. Where Judith, a daring and beautiful widow, who is upset with her Jewish countrymen for not trusting God to deliver them from their foreign conquerors, goes to the camp of the enemy general Holofernes, promising him information on the Israelites. Gaining his trust, she is allowed access to his tent one night as he lies in a drunken stupor. She decapitates him and Israel is saved.Abbot Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet (c. 1730 - 1790) was a French cartographer active in the mid to late 18th century. Clouet held the post of Royal Geographer of the Academie des Sciences de Rouen, he had offices in Paris and Cadiz. Clouet"s most important work is his Geographie Moderne, which was published in various editions from 1776 - 1793. Clouet also produced a series of stunning and highly decorative wall maps depicting the various continents. He followed in the footsteps of Jean-Baptiste Nolin and other French cartographers, reissuing these grand wall-maps in the latter part of the 18th century to decorate the houses of Paris and more unusually Spain.Price: € 23.500,-.

London: G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1785. First edition. Hardcover. Andrew Sparrman was a Swedish physician and naturalist. He arrived in South Africa on 10 January 1772. He joined Captain Cook on the Resolution on 22 November 1772. Returning in 1775, he undertook further exploration that lasted until April 1776, taking him as far as Kaffraria - what is today the southeast part of Eastern Cape of South Africa. Sparrman's account of Cook's voyage, as well as his exploration in Africa, are described in this book. Included is a brief glossary of Hottentot language and full page plates of indigenous animals, as well as the original errata and instructions to the bookbinder. Two volumes, in a recent fine half leather binding over marbled paper boards with leather corners, raised and gilt spine bands, gilt rules, and red spine labels. The binding is nearly as-new. The contents are exceptionally clean and well-preserved, with only trivial scattered hints of spotting. The pages are bright and clean, with immaculate illustrated plates, including the striking Volume I frontispiece plate "Prospect of the Country at the Cape of Good Hope". The large folding map at the end of Volume I is also clean and intact with no tears. Sparrman's work was one of the earliest on Southern Africa and the Southern Oceans.

Staatsgesetze der dreyzehn vereinigten amerikanischen Staaten. Aus dem Französischen übersetzt.

Dessau and Leipzig, 1785. 8vo. Contemporary yellow paper binding with handwritten paper title-label to spine. Wear to upper capital and corners. An old handwritten paper library label to lower spine. A discreet stamp to verso of title-page. Handwritten contemporary library-inscription to inside of front board. Old label removed from front free end-paper. Internally very nice, clean, and fresh. A fine, clean, and tight, completely unrestored copy. (4), 575 pp.. First edition in German of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation - the first constitution of the United States. In 1778, the first collection of the constitutions of the 13 American states was published for the first time, in French translation. In October 1780, the second Continental Congress decided to print the state documents: The declaration of Independence, the preliminary Constitution ("Articles of Confederation", being the first constitution of the United States), the contract with France, and the Constitutions of the 13 states together. This seminal volume was printed in Philadelphia in 1781 and appeared in French translation in 1783, in Paris. The first German edition of this groundbreaking volume was entitled "Staatsgesetze der dreyzehn vereinigten amerikanischen Staaten" (i.e. "The Constitutions of the Thirteen united American States"); it appeared in 1785 [the present publication] and was based upon the French translation of 1783. The English language original was reprinted in Glasgow the same year, making the German translation the fourth appearance of the volume and the second translation, preceded only by the French. The Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union was the first constitution of the United States. After more than a year of consideration, it was submitted to the states for ratification in 1777, but not enough states approved it until 1781.This foundational volume constitutes one of the most important works in American constitutional history

A New Dictionary of Natural History; or, Compleat Universal Display of Animated Nature with accurate representations of the most curious and beautiful animals, elegantly coloured

London : Harrison and Co , 1785 A rare and beautiful introduction to natural history. In 2 folio volumes with 99 (of 100) hand coloured plates by Moses Harris and others after his style. Martyn is a pseudonym for William Fordyce Mavor, who authored a wide range of works. The books are set out alphabetically, with the plates reflecting this classification, so they can portray lizards and lynx side by side on the same plate. The pages are double column and unpaginated. The text for each animal is thoughtfully put together eg for the guinea pig 'The Guinea-Pig is a very cleanly creature and totally different from that that affords it a name....Guinea-Pigs repose on their bellies, pretty much in their usual posture...'. The plates are nicely coloured and the ones by Moses Harris (butterflies, moths and shells) are particularly well drawn. This copy is in a contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards. The half leather corners have been replaced with a paper cover. There is some wear to boards and corners but overall they are in good condition. The spines are leather with raised bands and gilt decoration. There are title and volume labels. There is some wear to joints, particularly on Vol I, where there is some cracking at the front hinge, but the bindings are currently sound. Contents generally clean with occasional marking and some edge tearing. There are some pencil notes at the beginning of both volumes. The paper used in this work is particularly soft and prone to edge-tearing. Vol I: red and black title page; Preface; covers A-K; 55 plates; new rear endpaper. A couple of plates have margin/edge tears - Plate I has tear at the top margin with a small piece missing at the corner and a tear at the bottom margin again missing corners; Plate XLVII has a small piece missing from the bottom edge and a repair. The title page has a small hole and 2 repaired edge tears. Vol II: 44 of 45 plates; title page in red and black; text and plates L-Z; 2pp listing of plates; Finis. There is some offsetting from plates to text, occasional browning to pages; and some edge-tearing. Please enquire if you would like more images to assess condition.

Idea del valor de la isla Española, utilidades que de ella puede sacar su monarquia.

Madrid: Impr. de Pedro Marin 4to. [4] ff., xx, 208 pp., [2] ff., table; without the map.. 1785 Sánchez Valverde was the first writer born in Santo Domingo to publish a book. In fact he published several, but all agree his most important is his Idea del valor de la isla Española. In it he writes of the entire island of Hispaniola, both the Spanish portion and the French. He surveys the natural history, the crops, the people, the slaves, the climate, the topography, the hydrology, the ports, and the prospects. Provenance: Ownership stamp of John Carter Brown on title-page; later in the John Carter Brown Library (bookplate); note at end "Collated with G.G. Church copy. July 31, 1912. dup." Deaccessioned 2008. Evidence of readership: Scattered marginalia in French through p. 50, almost invariably giving the French for obscure words and phrases in Spanish in the text. Perhaps owned by someone living in the Haitian area of the island? Contemporary vellum over paste boards, vellum split at fore-edge of front one exposing the substrate; vellum cockled and old, faint inked writing on it. Front hinge (inside) open; without the map; stamp as noted above. A good copy.
