      - Kupferstich ( Guckkasten ) n. Kleiner b.

(H. Holland in ADB XL, 280 ff.).

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean. Undertaken, by the Command of His Majesty, for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. To determine the Position and Extent of the West Side of North America; its Distance from Asia; and the Practicability of a Northern Passage to Europe. Performed under the Direction of Captains Cook, Clerke, and Gore, on His Majesty's Ships the 'Resolution' and 'Discovery', in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780 ..

London, Printed by W. and A. Strahan for G. Nicol and T. Cadell, 1784. Quarto, three volumes (the text) plus the large folio atlas, [viii], xcvi, 421, [1] (blank); [xii], 549, [1] (blank); [xii] (last blank), 558, [2] (advertisement, last blank) pages with a folding letterpress table plus a total of 87 engraved plates, maps and charts (with 24, many folding, in the quarto volumes, and 63 in the atlas, including 2 folding maps); most of the plates are from the artwork of John Webber. Quarto volumes in modern antique-style half calf and cloth, all edges uncut (the atlas in early half morocco and more recent cloth, all edges gilt), spines gilt in compartments, with morocco title-labels; leather very lightly rubbed (a little more so on the atlas); the text leaves tend to be uniformly toned, with scattered foxing (generally light); some margins with chips or short tears (none affecting the text, a few with old archival tape repairs); small light tidemark near the edge of the top margin of the first few leaves of the first volume; the last four leaves of the second volume are a little soiled, affecting mainly the bottom corner (one of which has been tidied up with a slight trim); atlas plates foxed and offset, with a number of them heavily browned and spotted (and with a tiny ember burn in one unprinted margin); minimal old conservation work to the large folding map; minor signs of use and age; these blemishes notwithstanding, a presentable wide-margined set of this important work. Each volume contains the Ingleton bookplate and Ingleton Collection catalogue stamp and number (6362). 'Cook's third voyage was organized to seek the Northwest Passage and to return Omai to Tahiti. Officers of the crew included William Bligh, James Burney, James Colnett, and George Vancouver. John Webber was appointed artist to the expedition. After calling at Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society Islands, the expedition sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands. Cook charted the American west coast from Northern California through the Bering Strait as far north as latitude 70° 44' before he was stopped by pack ice. He returned to Hawaii for the winter and was killed in an unhappy skirmish with the natives over a boat. Charles Clerke took command and after he died six months later, the ships returned to England under John Gore' (Hill). Hill 361; Forbes 62; Beddie 1543. [4 items].

A very good clean tight copy. John Fothergill (1712 - 1780) was an English physician, plant collector, philanthropist and Quaker. Born in Yorkshire he trained as a physician at Edinburgh, achieving M.D. in 1736, and then studied at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He settled in London about 1740 where he gained an extensive practice. In 1745, he gave a brief lecture to the Royal Society of London, citing the work of a Scottish physician, William Tossach, which is the first known lecture on the practice of mouth-to-mouth ventilation. His pamphlet, Account of the Sore Throat attended with Ulcers (1748), contains one of the first descriptions of diphtheria in English, and was translated into several languages. He was a keen botanist and at Upton, near Stratford, he had an extensive botanical garden where he grew many rare plants obtained from various parts of the world. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1763. The editor of The Works claims this to be a complete collection of Fothergill's published writings included some posthumous essays and his correspondence with various learned physicians and others. 2 essays are in Latin followed by a translation, the majority are on medical matters: emetics, ruptured diaphragm, the putrid sore throat, cortex peruvianus in scrofulous disorders, cure of sciatica, cure of consumptions, angina pectoris, influenza, Ipecacuanha and the cure of fluxes etc. There are 4 essays on botanical plants, 28 pages on coffee and its history, the editor has compiled a list of "stove and green-house plants" in the doctor's garden at Upton. There is also an essay on the North American Colonies written in 1765 (17 pages) and a letter to a friend on the school Fothergill intended to found at Ackworth in Yorkshire. The final essay written by Lettsom is on the disease of the bladder from which Fothergill died, including his own description of symptoms and treatment which Lettsom transcribed from his letters. John Coakley Lettsom (1744-1815) was also an English physician, Quaker, and abolitionist, born in the Virgin Islands. He founded the Medical Society of London in 1773, the oldest medical society in the United Kingdom and was its president for many years. The Wellcome Historical Medical Library, Volume III, page 45; Bibliotheca Walleriana Volume I, 3146; Bibliotheca Osleriana, 2640; ESTC T139745. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE.         UVRES DE MOLIERE. NOUVELLE ÉDITION. TOME PREMIER.

A Londres [but actually Paris or Amsterdam]. 1784. - [2],xxii,[2],314,[1]pp. plus frontispiece portrait. 12mo. Contemporary spotted calf, boards ruled in gilt, rebacked with portion of original spine laid down. Corners worn, some scuffing to boards. Contemporary ownership markings in signatures, slightly later ownership inscription on front free endpapers. Occasional dampstaining at edges, scattered foxing. Very good. In a half morocco box. Thomas' Jefferson's copy of the first volume of a seven volume set of the works of Molière in French. This is a pirated edition, with a false London imprint but actually printed in Paris or Amsterdam in 1783-1784. This copy is marked by Jefferson in his usual style, with a "T" next to the I or J signature, and a "J" beside the T signature. It is also signed "M. Randolph, Monticello" on the verso of the front free endpaper - the signature of Martha Jefferson Randolph, Thomas Jefferson's daughter. This volume of Molière's works contains the biography of the playwright by Voltaire, and four of his comedies: L'ETOURDI ("The Blunderer"), LE DÉPIT AMOUREUX ("The Love Tiff"), LES PRÉCIEUSES RIDICULES ("The Pretentious Ladies"), and LE COCU IMAGINAIRE ("The Imaginary Cuckold"). It illustrates Jefferson's taste for light literature (or at least what his age would have considered light), especially French. According to Sowerby, Jefferson owned two sets of Molière, one a 1710 edition, the other the present 1784 edition. Both were only known to her through the 1815 Jefferson library catalogue, and Jefferson's confused entry (although it is correct in identifying it as a false imprint) kept her from more fully identifying the set. It is likely that Jefferson acquired this set during his period as U.S. Ambassador in France; it would have been a newly printed work at the time. Jefferson's daughter Martha, who signed the volume at Monticello, was close to her father, lived at Monticello with him for much of his life after he retired, and inherited the estate on his death in 1826. She died in 1836, the last of his children. Sowerby could not locate this set at the time she wrote the catalogue of Jefferson's library. As far as we know, this is the only volume to come to light. An excellent example of a volume from Jefferson's library, with his distinctive marks and the signature of his daughter at Monticello. SOWERBY, CATALOGUE OF THE LIBRARY OF THOMAS JEFFERSON 4582.

Sthlm, A. J. Nordström, 1784. 8:o. (19) s. & 1 utvikbar grav. plansch. Häftad i samtida svampmålat grålila omslag.

The Discovery, Settlement and Present State of Kentucke: and An Essay towards the Topography and Natural History of that important Country: to which is added ... The Adventures of Col. Daniel Boon, one of the first settlers ...

FIRST EDITION. A classic of the early American frontier, this is the first book on Kentucky and the first published biography of Daniel Boone, dictated by the legendary frontiersman himself. "Boone's international fame was secured with the publication of 'The Adventures of Col. Daniel Boon' in John Filson's Discovery, Settlement and Present State of Kentucke in 1784 and its subsequent translation and reprinting in France and Germany the next year" (ANB). While Filson has clearly improved Boone's spelling and diction, this narrative provides an exciting firsthand view of the exploration and settlement of the old frontier. Boone's riveting tale concludes, "I can now say that I have verified the saying of old Indian who signed Col. Henderson's deed. Taking me by the hand, at the delivery thereof, Brother, says he, we have given you a fine land, but I believe you will have much trouble in settling it--My footsteps have often been marked with blood. ..." "Boone's significance to American history and culture is hard to overestimate, for in a very real sense it is impossible to discuss the frontier without discussing Boone. Historically and imaginatively, perhaps no single individual is more central to the frontier experience. ... [Boone is] the prototype of the frontier hero" (ANB). This is a rare untrimmed copy of a classic of the American frontier. The map called for on the title-page was printed separately in Philadelphia by Tenoor Rook and is virtually never found with the text (none since the Hoe copy, last sold in 1921). Modern calf. Without map as always; H3,4 with long closed tears into text. An excellent untrimmed copy. Provenance: the Siebert copy, Sotheby's, New York, 21 May 1999, lot 297.

To The Right Hon. Frederic Lord North, His Majesty's Secretary of State for the Southern Department; [Captain William's Narrative; in which is contained particulars relative to the execution of Mustapha Cawn; and observations on the speeches of General Burgoyne, Colonel Fullarton, Mr. Fox, Mr. Burke, and, Mr. Francis; addressed to The Officers of the British Army]

No publisher; [Printed for John Stockdale]. - 1784; [1790]. 31 pp.; 70 pp. Quarter leather with marbled boards. Spine label reads, "Tracts." Rebound with new end papers. Spine scuffed with tiny chip at bottom. Boards rubbed. This volume contains two related books. The first letter pertains to Pitt's India Act of 1784. The second is by Captain Williams, who put Mustapha Cawn to death without a trial, exactly the type of behaviour Pitt was trying to overcome with legislation in the British Parliament. The resulting Narrative is Williams' defense of his actions. Reverse of p. 31 in first tract is noticeably dark, and the leaves of this section bear more thumbing and staining than the rest of the text, which is only darkened on the first and last pages. The first tract is also shorter than the rest of the text block and bound slightly askew, but cut with the rest of the pages, and there is a tear in the centre of the block at the spine from the thread of its original binding. A few typos are corrected by hand in the first document. Williams' narrative, the second document, has lost its half-title and title-page. 0 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

- Vereinzelt gering braunfleckig, sonst wohlerhalten. - Holzmann-Bohatta IV, 11172 und Weller, Druckorte I, 78 (beide geben Dippel als Verfasser an); Ackermann I, 64 und Brüning 5345 (beide unter Schütz); Duveen 402 (Anm.) und Ferguson II, 95 (Anm.)         La scienza della legislazione

presso Giuseppe Galeazzi regio stampatore. Dodici parti rilegati in tre volumi di cm. 19,5, pp. 208; 150 + 1 c.b.; 157 (1) + 1 c.b.; 143 (1); 164; 184; 228; 144; 189 (1) + 1 c.b.; 138 (2); 96 [su 100!] (2); 127 (1).
