[Attributes: Soft Cover]

Loose Sheets as Issued:] Journal of the Senate [and Journal of the Assembly] of the State of New York, At their first Meeting of the Seventh Session, begun and holden at the City-Hall in the City of New York, on Tuesday, the sixth Day of January, 1784

Printed by E. Holt, Printer to the State, New York 1784 - Two incomplete sets of folio gatherings: the Journals of the New York State Senate and the Journal of the New York Assembly, both seventh session proceedings respectively, printed by Elizabeth Holt after the death of her husband, the publisher John Holt, on January 30th 1784. Both are first printings in sheets as issued (stabbed but not stitched), untrimmed and unbound. The Journal of the Senate consists of the title leaf and 18 sequential folio gatherings (Q -- 2M): pp. 59-130. It thus includes the printed record of daily proceedings from March 15th, 1784 - April 28th, 1784. Modest scattered foxing and toning, the last three gatherings are partly damaged with tears to the top right corner and margin affecting parts of the letterpress headline only, else overall very good. Evans 18644, ESTC W33312.The Journal of the Assembly consists of 28 sequential folio gatherings: ([Q2] R -- 2T 2U1): pp. 61-168. It thus includes the printed record of daily proceedings from March 3d, 1784 -- May 11th, 1784. Modest scattered foxing, the first leaf is toned, very good. There are two copies of the final leaf (2U1). Evans 18648, ESTC W16437.A very scarce survival of original folded sheets printed by Elizabeth Hunter Holt, sister to the renowned colonial Williamsburg publisher William Hunter. In 1749 she married John Holt, also of Williamsburg, whom she succeeded as printer for the state, and printer of The New-York Journal, which for a short time was renamed the Independent New-York Gazette. In June 1785 she turned over the Journal's proprietorship to son-in-law Eleazer Oswald, a Philadelphia newspaper publisher, because other printers were undermining the Journal's operation and seeking the state printership. OCLC locates only three copies of the complete published edition of the Journal of the Senate (pp. 147, [1]); and no copies of the complete published edition of the Journal of the Assembly (pp. 168). Franklin."

3 vols.

Paris, Panckoucke 1784 - With folding table in vol. I. VI pp., CLIX, 352 pp.; VII, 536 pp.; VIII, 468 pp. 8vo. Contemp. boards with ms. spine label (restored). Paris, Panckoucke, 1784. First edition. Jacques Necker (1732-1804) was a Swiss banker and Louis XVI's director-general of finance. This famous justification is one of the most important contributions to economical policies prior to the French Revolution. Necker tried to finance the participation of France in the American War of Independence without levying additional taxes. His important innovation was to operate with a national debt. When he was forced to resign in 1781, he retired to Saint-Ouen where he wrote the present work. It had such an enormous success with the general reader that within a few days, more than 80'000 copies were sold. In 1788, Necker was reinstalled as finance minister, and tried to influence restraint on the political developments which led to the French Revolution. - Pp. 15/16 in vol. 2 inserted from another (shorter) copy, otherwise fine.

First Edition. 480 pages. 4to. (7 3/5 inches x 10 inches) Recent 3/4 leather over marbled boards. Bright and clean internally, with very occasional spotting. We offer the entire Volume XXV [25] (July-December 1784) of Observations sur La Physique, Sur L'Histoire Naturelle et sur les Arts, Avec des Planches en Taille-Douce Dediees A Mgr. Le Comte D'Artois; Par M. l'Abbe Rozier, M. J. A. Mongez. The article by Meusnier is on pp. 39-47. INCLUDES a followup-article pages 48-69. Text in French. Boards. In 1783 Joseph Michel and Jacques Etienne Montgolfier constructed a full sized hot air balloon and demonstrated it for King Louis XVI - one of the very first balloon ascensions. A detailed report was made 'immediately after the attempt with the aerostatic machine' and signed by members of the Academie de Sciences Francaise. The machine was 70 feet high, and stayed up for twenty to twenty five minutes. "This first passenger flight was a spectacular success." Other Frenchmen Jacques Alexandre Cesar Charles and Pilatre de Rozier quickly built variations - some successful, some tragic. The only real control these pioneering balloonists had was buoyancy - how far up or down they soared. Steering was a mighty wish, but the wind was the real master without active steering control coupled with propulsion. Propulsion and control experiments quickly became the rage, including gunpowder charges, movable wings, riggings of sails, rotating screws, and oarsmen with silk covered oars. None worked very well. Enter Jean Baptiste Meusnier, who on leave of absence from his work as a military engineer at the Cherbourg harborworks was fascinated by this new field, "aerostation". After some study, on December 1783 he read before the Academy the paper offered here, the first published on these "machines", and the next month was elected a full member, immediately appointed to a committee on aerostation along with Lavoisier, Berthollet, and Codorcet. The results of his work on this committee were presented ina follow-on report read in November 1784 which included a theory and detailed construction plans for dirigible balloons. Although it "led to no practical results at the time", the new work was important and pioneering. Some of his ideas were tested by the Roberts brothers who flew a dirigible shaped balloon for seven hours during 1784, but the real test of the designs really required a means of propulsion that wouldn't exist for nearly 100 years - a small, lightweight engine. As with many innovators and futurists, Meusnier was well ahead of the technology his time afforded. Meusnier unfortunately died before he could test out his own theories. Other articles in the volume include work by Franz Karl Achard ("sur les altérations que le feu de fusion fait éprouver à la terre des végétaux, mêlée avec les autres terres pures" and "sur la vitrification de la terre alumineuse mêlée en proportions differentes & connues avec des sels" and one other), chemist M. Pelletier on salts, an article by Cavallo on an air pump, de Fouchy on measuring densities of the atmosphere, an article by Woulfe "nouveau procede pour faire l'ether nitreux", experiments on the air by cavendish, etc. etc. Beautifully engraved plates accompany some articles. The title of this paper translates to: "On the balance of aerostatic machines, on different ways to move them up and down, and especially on that of executing these maneuvers without throwing ballast and without losing inflammable air, providing in particular the ball capacity , for containing atmospheric air" and is a pioneering work on the subject. See "The Zeppelin Story" by W. Robert Nitske (A.S. Barnes & Company, 1977) and DSB IX, pp. 342-44 for more details. Near Fine.

J. F. Blumenbach's copy

Paris: Imprimerie Royale. [2], 64 (of 66)pp., lacking pp. 65-66 and final blank. 252 x 202 mm. Boards c. 1784, a little foxed. Very good apart from missiong leaves. From the library of anthropologist Johann F. Blumenbach (1752-1840), with his signature on the front endpaper and 5 lines of his ms. notes facing the title. First edition. In the spring of 1784 the French government, no longer able to ignore the challenges to established medicine and politics posed by Mesmer and his followers, appointed two separate commissions to investigate animal magnetism, the first consisting of nine members-- five from the Académie des Sciences, four from the Faculté de Médecine-- and the second composed of five members of the Société Royale de Médecine. The first commission, presided over by Benjamin Franklin (then the United States' Ambassador to France), decided to investigate animal magnetism as practiced by Eslon, since Eslon, unlike Mesmer, welcomed an official inquiry. After observing Eslon at work and performing several tests on his clients, the commission concluded that mesmeric "fluid" did not exist, and that the convulsions and other effects produced by animal magnetism were merely the products of imagination and imitation. The commission's report, edited by the astronomer Jean Sylvain Bailly, unleashed a storm of controversy that raged for many years, with dozens of pamphlets and books published on both sides. An octavo edition of the Rapport was published in the same year. Crabtree 31. Norman M124.

Together with authentic copies of the two East-India Bills ; the arguments of Counsel against one of them ; the several papers, containing a true statement of the Company's affairs ; lists of the divisions, of the absentees, and of those who retired before the divisions commenced [jusqu'à] Monday, Februrary 23, up to the dissolution of the late Parliament, Wednesday, March 24, 1784, both days inclusive (.).

An Account of the First Aerial Voyage in England, in a Series of Letters to his Guardian

Printed for the Author: and sold at the Pantheon; also by the Publisher, J. Bell, at the British Library, Strand; and at Mr. Molini's, Woodstock-Street, London 1784 - First edition of this account of the first balloon ascent in England, accomplished one year after the first aerial experiments in France. The Italian Lunardi describes the inspiration and preparation for his flight, as well as the failed ascent of his rival, the Frenchman Moret. The result is a personal and surprisingly moving account of the experiment: "the concern betrayed by the looks of my friends, though I know it to be without reason, has a considerable effect on me." (Indeed, Lunardi would suffer a near-fatal ballooning disaster above the North Sea just over a year later.) The book closes with eyewitness accounts by those who saw Lunardi land safely, miles away from the starting point where thousands of spectators, including the Prince of Wales, had anxiously watched his balloon ascend. Lunardi's feat made him an instant sensation in England and across Europe, even inspiring balloon-themed fashion trends. His book was sold at the Pantheon in Oxford Street, where his balloon was on triumphant display: "Most of my time is now taken up with the exhibition of the Balloon, and indeed of myself. . . . It is difficult to imagine any thing more pleasing than the solicitude which multitudes of beautiful women express concerning dangers that are past, and the heroism of others who wish to accompany me in my second tour." Lunardi signed the first copies of his book, including this one, to limit piracy. A near-fine copy of an important early record of aerial innovation, handsomely bound by Riviere & Son. Octavo in fours, late nineteenth-century three-quarter mottled calf over tan linen boards, boards double-ruled in gilt, raised bands, black morocco spine labels, spine lettered and ornamented in gilt, blue marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Lunardi, two folding engraved plates of the balloon and apparatus, followed by a page describing the plates with publisher's advertisements on verso (usually bound at rear). Signed on the half title by Lunardi. Light wear to edges of boards and head of spine, joints reinforced, half title dusty. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
