Scarpa, Antonio, Anatom (1752-1832).
- Ungedruckt. - Sehr selten.

HOLT, Elizabeth)
Printed by E. Holt, Printer to the State, New York, 1784. Two incomplete sets of folio gatherings: the Journals of the New York State Senate and the Journal of the New York Assembly, both seventh session proceedings respectively, printed by Elizabeth Holt after the death of her husband, the publisher John Holt, on January 30th 1784. Both are first printings in sheets as issued (stabbed but not stitched), untrimmed and unbound. The *Journal of the Senate* consists of the title leaf and 18 sequential folio gatherings (Q - 2M): pp. 59-130. It thus includes the printed record of daily proceedings from March 15th, 1784 - April 28th, 1784. Modest scattered foxing and toning, the last three gatherings are partly damaged with tears to the top right corner and margin affecting parts of the letterpress headline only, else overall very good. *Evans* 18644, *ESTC* W33312. The *Journal of the Assembly* consists of 28 sequential folio gatherings: ([Q2] R - 2T 2U1): pp. 61-168. It thus includes the printed record of daily proceedings from March 3d, 1784 - May 11th, 1784. Modest scattered foxing, the first leaf is toned, very good. There are two copies of the final leaf (2U1). *Evans* 18648, *ESTC* W16437. A very scarce survival of original folded sheets printed by Elizabeth Hunter Holt, sister to the renowned colonial Williamsburg publisher William Hunter. In 1749 she married John Holt, also of Williamsburg, whom she succeeded as printer for the state, and printer of *The New-York Journal*, which for a short time was renamed the *Independent New-York Gazette*. DAY, Thomas
J. Stockdale. 1784 1st ed SLAVERY Thomas Day Letter Declaration of Independence Abolition Thomas Day was an 18th-century British abolitionist who is best known for his influence on the American Declaration of Independence. Day took exception with the phrase “all men are created equal” considering that signees of the Declaration own negro slaves. Day even is known to have said “If there be an object truly ridiculous in nature, it is an American patriot, signing resolutions of independency with the one hand, and with the other brandishing a whip over his affrighted slaves”. (Day, Letter, p.33) Day, himself, provided context for the reason for his ‘Letter on the Slavery of Negroes’. He states, “the following letter was written in the year 1776 at the request of an American gentleman who desired to know my sentiments upon the slavery of the Negroes.” Item number: #11810 Price: $2500 DAY, Thomas Fragment of an original letter on the slavery of the negroes, written in the year 1776, by Thomas Day, . "Bible du libertinage pour certains, le livre s'impose surtout comme chef-d'œuvre du roman d'analyse, comme un des romans les plus abstraits et les plus intelligents. Aussi l'audace des Liaisons Dangereuses ne consiste-t-elle ni dans la débauche facile au langage cru, ni dans la perversité au premier degré ou la jouissance de faire le mal propre à Sade, mais dans l'art de dire ou plutôt de l'écrire pour un connaisseur admiratif et un pe … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DAMOURS, Louis].
First edition of this fictional collection of letters by the Paris lawyer Louis Damours (1720-1788), showing what a young man might learn about conduct and society from an older woman. Although many more letters than are found here were written, the publisher tells us that the book is condensed thanks to the lack of appetite among today's readers for moral treatises; what we have here though may still be useful to the public and especially 'pour cette belle moitié du genre humain, dont Miladi *** se déclare l'Avocat avec tant de chaleur'. The letters' didactic tone is leavened somewhat by anecdotes; their author is a recent widow, living in London, their recipient is a young soldier, eighteen years old. Miladi ***'s aim is to introduce civility to her young soldier, to demonstrate the many noble qualities of women, and to temper the enthusiasms and calm the fierceness of soldiers; finally, to prove that there exist virtuous people, who are neither unhappy nor the enemies of honest pleasures. The letters, however, also provide a subtly waspish commentary on some of the foibles of French society, and its obsession with class. A second edition appeared in 1788.

Paris, Cuchet, 1784. 8vo. With 3 full-page engraved plates.Contemporary goatskin, gold-tooled spine with a yellow-brown morocco spine label, sprinkled edges. XV, 16-20, 511, [1 blank] pp. First edition of a treatise on the mineralogy of volcanoes and a description of all kinds of gravel produced by underground fires, written by Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond (1741-1819). Faujas de Saint-Fond was a former lawyer who decided to devote himself completely to geology, mineralogy and natural history. He worked as assistant in the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, and later, in 1793, became a professor there.Although Faujas de Saint-Fond gives an extensive description, classification and comparison of the the different kinds of basalt, he also wrote about the mineral varieties he found in several other kinds of volcanic product, such as lavas, glasses, pumice stones, breccias and pozzolans. The last chapter of the book contains a descriptive catalogue of volcanic products of Mount Etna and samples send by the French geologist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu (1750-1801).Although Faujas de Saint-Fond here convincingly argues for (from todays point of view proves) the volcanic origin of basalt, his study failed to settle the controversy. He continued presenting further arguments, adding evidence from areas outside France, including England and Scotland.Binding slightly worn, head of spine cracked, hinges weak, corners slightly bumped, endleaves slightly stained, otherwise in … [Click Below for Full Description]

SMITH, Adam
W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1784. Third edition, first octavo edition. Three volumes. Bound in contemporary calf, with green morocco title labels lettered in gilt and gilt rules to the spines. General light wear to the spine ends, slightly heavier to the head of vol I with the front joint just starting to split. Lower front corner bumped and wear to the lower rear corner of vol. I. Small mark to the bottom edges of vol 3, but internally very fresh. A very good, unsophisticated copy, seldom encountered without repair. ". the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM). In his Wealth of Nations, Smith "begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development, a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system, and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control" (PMM). "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry" (ODNB). 1784. Spectacular Art Work of Early Cutlery

Folio. Twenty-four watercolors; one woodcut and 211 ink line drawings in the text. 8, 65, [5 - blank], [1], [1 - blank], [1] pp.; 4 p.l., 46 pp.; 11, [1 - blank] pp.; 9, [1 - blank], [2] pp. Contemporary calf, hinges cracked but holding, wear to binding with loss of leather along edges, marbled endpapers.

An exceedingly rare document depicting fork and knife designs from one of the centers of the German metalware industry in the 18th century. The spectacular part of this book is the original artwork. There are nine watercolors depicting 138 different forks, both with and without handles, having two, three, or four tines, and many of which are so large, that they must have been designed for carving. What is historically interesting, is that although the fork was first being used in Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries (some have argued for the eating of pasta*), the fork had only become widespread in Europe during the latter half of the 18th century. This catalogue can therefore be seen as evidence of this new necessity in the culture of the table.
There are also fifteen watercolors illustrating 95 different knives. These are painted in vivid colors and all are shown with handles. Some of them are white and were probably made with ivory handles; others are very decorative and include written proverbs. Those which are painted to appear crackled were probably made from shagreen (a rough, untanned skin), whereas others have handles made from hardwoods. All are simply wonderful.
The first work … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jan BLEULAND
Jan BLEULAND: EXPERIMENTUM ANATOMICUM, QUO ARTERIOLARUM LYMPHATICARUM EXISTENTIA PROBABILITER ADSTRUITUR, INSTITUTUM, DESCRIPTUM, ET ICONE ILLUSTRATUM. With 1 colour engraved plate as well as 2 wood engraved vignettes and 1 wood engraved ornamental chapter line. Leiden: Abraham and Jan Honkoop, 1784. 8vo. [1 (title leaf), 1 (dedication leaf)], 36 pages. Colour engraving and letterpress, bound in modern half-cloth with red spine and marbled boards. Splendid copy of this first edition of Jan Bleuland's groundbreaking histological study on lymphatic vessels, illustrated with probably the first appearance of colour-printing of microscopical subjects. Author, Content, Illustration: Present publication is one of a series of Bleuland's monographs, all illustrated with a pioneering method of tissue fixing and dyeing and colour-printing, whereby the author established a standard for histological illustration. Jan Bleuland (1756-1838), professor of anatomy, surgery, and obstetrics at Harderwyck, later at Leiden and Utrecht, perfected a technique of injecting tissue structures with fixatives and dyes to reveal anatomical details, particularly useful under magnification. The accompanying plates based on tissues visualised in such a way, mostly drawn by Martinus van der Jagt and engraved by Jan Kobell, are remarkable for their precision in depicting microscopic detail. Edgar Goldschmid considered them pieces of exemplary printing, unusual in subject and make-up for the period. They are probably the first examples of colour-printing of microscopical subjects. Bleuland would prepare more … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cook, James
London, 1784. Very Good. Sheet measures 27 x 17 inches, plate measures 25.75 x 15 inches, very good, usual folds, light wear along right edge, minor offsetting else nice and crisp. [Early American Magazine ] [Adams, John ] [Ballooning ]
Boston.: Printed and Published by Greenleaf and Freeman, At their Printing Office, North side of the Market., 1784. Condition: Age-darkened and foxed throughout. Disbound, now sewn into a tasteful, antiqued marbled wrapper. Plates have been professionally conserved and are now removed from the Magazine (into which they had been crudely folded and sewn at the time of publication). Margins have been added along the binding edge of both plates. Both plates have light foxing and soiling; the balloon plate also has a quarter-sized area of foxing in the lower right blank margin. The Boston Magazine was one of the first magazines to be published after the American Revolution; it ran from October, 1783 to October, 1786. This issue contains two notable engravings by John Norman -- one of John Adams and another of a fanciful air balloon. Norman's portrait of John Adams is, indeed, the first American engraving of Adams. It is likely based on an unattributed engraving of Adams that appeared in the August, 1783 issue of the European Magazine (London). Oliver speculates that Norman's portrait may have been "tempered" by his own personal recollections of Adams. The air balloon engraving is also a "first." According to Lewis, three engravings of balloons (all by Norman and all in The Boston Magazine) appeared in American magazines through 1810. The present engraving is the first of these. Norman's balloon engravings sought to illustrate the new phenomenon of manned balloon flights, as popularized by the Montgolfiere brothers in France. (The first manned balloon flight had … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAVARY, Claude-Etienne.
Constantinople; Paris, Lamy, 1784. 18mo. Brown morocco (ca. 1865?), gold-tooled spine. [4], 91, [1 blank] pp. First edition of Savary's French summary of the ideas of Islamic religion, based on his 1883 French translation of the Qu'ran. In a certain sense it may be considered an epitone of the Qu'ran. While Savary's Qu'ran was published in Paris (by Knapen & fils and Onfroy), this summary was also published in Constantinople. While only a few scholars would read the entire Qu'ran, even once it was available in their own language, this summary gave a much larger European audience (as well as French speakers in the Ottoman Empire) a notion of Islamic religion. Savary (1750-1788) began his career as physician to the Court of Provence, but became a leading orientalist and spent much of the years 1776 to 1780 in Egypt before returning to France, where he produced his French translation of the Qu'ran. With booksellers ticket. In very good condition, and virtually untrimmed. First edition, in a bibliophile production, of a French summary of key concepts in Islamic religion, published not only in Paris, but also in Constantinople. Brunet V, col. 154; cf. Gay 3357 note (1883 Savary ed. of the Qu'ran).
