Londres [i.e. Paris], s.n., 1785. In-8, [2]-110-[2]p. [Click Below for Full Description]

FAUJAS de Saint-Fond, Barthélemy (1738-1810)
Paris: Cuchet, 1784. 8vo. xl, 302, [2]pp. 9 engraved plates, folding table. Contemporary tree calf, flat spine divided into six compartments with gilt roll tool, black morocco lettering piece. Provenance: Sir Michael Robert Shaw-Stewart, 7th Baronet (armorial bookplate) "The first serious treatise on aerostation as a practical possibility" (PMM). The present work is a very early edition of the first contemporary chronicle of the first aerial voyage. In June of 1783, the Montgolfier brothers launched a balloon over Annonay. "This feat, however, was surpassed in September when they successfully launched a balloon carrying a sheep, a cock and a duck, and even more sensationally [on November 21] ... when, after some tethered experiments, Pilâtre de Rozier, accompanied by the Marquis d'Arlandes, made the first aerial voyage in history. They ascended from the Château de la Muette in the Bois de Boulogne, sustained their flight for five-and-a-half miles across Paris and descended after twenty-five minutes on the outskirts of the city" (PMM). The experiment, which was witnessed by, amongst many others, the Dauphin and Benjamin Franklin, marks the real beginning of the history of manned flight. The account by Faujas de Saint-Fond details both the event itself and the theoretical and practical science which went into making the flights a success. Cf. Brockett 302; cf. Dibner Heralds of Science 179; cf. PMM 229; cf. Norman 769; cf. Sparrow Milestones of Science 179; cf. Tissandier 21.

Yves GRAVIER (attivo a Genova 1780-1801)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1784, firmata in basso a sinistra.

SMITH, ADAM
London: Strahan and Cadell, 1784. THIRD EDITION of the most important book in the history of economics. Only 1000 sets were printed. The third edition (following the 1776 and 1778 editions) contains a new chapter, numerous additions and corrections, and an index. This issue must be accepted as representing his final version as there is clear evidence that it was read several times in proof, with close attention to the pointing, the third edition can be regarded as supervening even the first in many of its formal aspects, and thus now serves as printers copies (William B. Todd). The first comprehensive treatment of the subject of political economy, The Wealth of Nations accepted the French physiocrats attacks on mercantilism but rejected their view that land is the whole source of wealth. Instead, Smith saw the labor of the nation as its lifeblood and identified the division of labor as the key to increased productivity. Labor, the standard of value, was the original determinant of price, which in advanced societies is also affected by wages, profit and rent, all treated in the first book. In the second book, Smith analyzes the nature, accumulation, and employment of capital, the growth of which brings an increase in productive labor. Smith concludes by attacking the mercantile system and advocating freedom of commerce and industry. Smith s Wealth of Nations has been the bible for generations of laissez-faire economists and political philosophers and is the cornerstone book of free-market theory. His individualistic view of political economy is neatly summarized in a famous … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Printed for John Stockdale. 1784. First Edition. Hardcover. First octavo edition. In four volumes. Portrait frontispiece, large folding chart and a total of 49 plates. Derived from the official account of Cook's third voyage. Appearing shortly after the publication of the full quarto edition, this was the first account of to reach the wider public eager for details of Captain Cook's death in Hawaii. In keeping with the popular demand for an engaging narrative, the text was abridged omitting some technical and navigation details. Free from cumbersome passages, this edition reads more like an adventure than the official quarto edition.Likewise, the plates have been re-engraved for the smaller format. Aside from the large chart accompanying the first volume showing the progress of the expedition the two folding plates are noteworthy. The first depicts the death of Cook and was engraved after the original by Dodd. It ignominiously depicts the last moments of the great navigator, here shown lying face down and clutching the shore whilst dragged by the calves by a Hawaiian warrior in a tapa cape. The second folding plate is a map of the Hawaiian Islands, with a separate and most engaging chart of Karakakooa Bay marked with soundings, details of native villages and areas under cultivation - and the location 'Here Capt. Cook was killed' duly noted. Overall excellent condition. Spine Label absent on Volume 3 and coming loose from the right on volume 2. Strong bindings and clean text. These volumes survived over 85 years in a steamer trunk in an attic in Great Britain. They a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antonio ZATTA (Venezia 1722 - 1804)
Esemplare in ottime condizioni. Bibliogrfaia: L. Eredi Johannes Baptiste HOMANN (1730 - 1813)
This interesting world map presents some curious cartography, given the date of the map. The Great Lakes are shown as one huge body of water and California is strangely shaped with the Baja nearly appearing as an island. Australia includes several place names on the eastern coast, which resulted from Cook's discoveries in 1770. However, Van Diemens Land is still shown connected to the mainland. The tracks of several late 18th century expeditions are shown. Color key and German text panel below the hemispheres.

Housed in a custom grey cloth slipcase, titles in gilt to red morocco labels to spine. Wear to extremities, boards rubbed, vertical crease to front board, light foxing to contents, a little creasing to corners, occasional ink marks; a very good copy. The June issue of the work featured an article on the "Description of the Natives of the Sandwich Islands" on pages 286 to 288, adapted from Cook's Third Voyage, first published in three volumes in the same month. The popularity of the article led to the inclusion of an abridged version of the work in the following issues, running, according to Forbes, until at least December 1788. "Many of the illustrations are copies of the plates in the William Ellis narrative", published in 1782 (Forbes). The Lady's Magazine was published monthly from August 1770 until 1847 and featured a wide range of political news, extracts from novels, medical advice, letters from readers, and fashionable updates. Cook's third voyage was an "attempt to find a Northwest Passage, during which he 'discovered' Oahu and Kauai at the western end of the Hawaiian Islands, and, more importantly, 'depicted accurately for the first time the north-west coast of America, leaving no major discoveries for his successors. The narrative is one of the principal visual accounts of Cook's first voyage, by "the first European artist to set foot on Australian soil, to draw an authentic Australian landscape, and to portray Aboriginals from direct observation" (ADB). Parkinson joined Cook's expedition as natural history draughtsman at the behest of Sir Joseph Banks, and "with great diligence and flair made at least 1,300 drawings, many more than Banks had expected" which also included some of the earliest European views of the South Pa … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILLMET, Johannes.
Lugduni Batavorum, apud Sam. et Joh. Luchtmans, 1784.4to. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt, with red morocco title-label. XVI,824 pp.First edition. - The Arabic-Latin dictionary by Joannes Willmet (1750-1835) was primarily printed for educational purposes. This work is compiled chiefly from that of Golius, but with many important additions. Though it states to be constructed only for the Koran, Hariri and Ibn Arabshah’s Life of Timur, yet the Arabic student will seldom be at loss for any root he may meet with any other author. For the Koran it is particularly useful, as it contains not only all the words but refers also to the chapter and verse in which they occur (Ras Al Khaimah).- (Blank margin last page restored). - A fine interleaved copy with text in Arabic and Latin in double column. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
