Moses Harris (1730-c.1788) was a leading entomologist and one of the finest natural history artists of the eighteenth-century. Harris was a significant follower of Isaac Newton’s seminal work on light and colour, Opticks (1704). Harris produced the first comprehensive system of colours that was applicable to painting, producing the first colour circle in his short but highly influential work ‘The Natural System of Colours’ published sometime between 1769 and 1776. The first edition was dedicated to Sir Joshua Reynolds, President of the Royal Academy. The colour chart in the ‘Exposition’ is entitled ‘Scheme of Colours’ and is accompanied by an explanatory list of seventy-two colours.
Venezia, 1786. In folio (mm. 514x362). Zanetti. ?Milan: s.n., 1786. Original publisher's printed blue wrappers - the front with the title in a fleuron border and a woodcut on the rear (spine slightly defective), UNCUT. The thirty-three articles propose reforms to the administrative structure of municipalities in Austrian Lombardy - Milan, Mantua, Cremona, Pavia, Lodi, Como, Gallarate and Bozolo. From the top down, this specifies each office and its legal and financial responsibilities. The Plan governs town planning, street and building maintenance, quartering of troops, price caps, police, sanitation, fire companies, victuals, investigatory powers.... The anticipated degree of noncompliance was considerable, as just less than half the booklet concerns the punishments, fines and imprisonment for various transgressions. The two folding tables on transportation, each with printed paste-over corrections, were to be completed in manuscript by the appropriate magistrate. This is one of two editions, both published in 1786 (a folio and this octavo). I have located one example outside Italy of either (Regensburg). ¶Bibliografia delle edizioni giuridiche antiche in lingua italiana II(3): 1024; Bertarelli, Inventario I: 170.

Hunter, John
Eyre & Spottiswoode for HMSO, London, 1786. Progress of knowledge and treatment of venereal diseases received a setback with the publication of Hunter's treatise, which supported the old theory, current since the sixteenth century, that syphilis and gonorrhea were manifestations of the same venereal pathogen. Hunter's erroneous conclusion was based upon an experiment designed to test this theory, in which an unknown subject was inoculated with infectious matter taken from a gonorrheal patient, who, unbeknownst to Hunter, had also contracted syphilis. [Bertin, Antoine de]
A Saint-Domingue; et se trouve a Paris: Chez Mequignon, 1786. [4],126 [i.e. 124]pp., with the pagination omitting pages 115 and 117, but with no break in text. Half title. Contemporary blue front wrapper. Rear wrapper lacking, spine mostly perished, stitching loosening a bit, front wrapper lightly soiled and edgeworn. Very clean internally. Very good, untrimmed and partially unopened. A rare and important work on tropical medicine, with a special emphasis on the diseases of blacks in the West Indies. Bertin practiced medicine in the West Indies, and writes about the physical effects of the voyage there, the effects of the Caribbean climate and humidity on health, the causes of maladies, and their cures. Much of the text addresses specifically the health issues of Africans in the region. The NUC locates a copy at the John Carter Brown Library, and OCLC adds another fourteen, under a variety of accession numbers. The imprint suggests that Bertin wrote the book in Santo Domingo, and likely hoped to market it there - it was clearly a work of practical use and importance in the West Indies. SABIN 5011. The first issue of the 2nd edition usually has the frontispiece, but not the colour chart, and the second issue of 1786 usually has the colour chart substituted for the frontispiece. PALLADIO ANDREA.
per Giovanni Rossi, 1786. Quattro volumi in-folio (cm. 47), pp. 80; 56; 50; 64.
