Bertin, Antoine de]
Chez Mequignon, A Saint-Domingue; et se trouve a Paris, 1786. [4],126 [i.e. 124]pp., with the pagination omitting pages 115 and 117, but with no break in text. Half title. Contemporary blue front wrapper. Rear wrapper lacking, spine mostly perished, stitching loosening a bit, front wrapper lightly soiled and edgeworn. Very clean internally. Very good, untrimmed and partially unopened. A rare and important work on tropical medicine, with a special emphasis on the diseases of blacks in the West Indies. Bertin practiced medicine in the West Indies, and writes about the physical effects of the voyage there, the effects of the Caribbean climate and humidity on health, the causes of maladies, and their cures. Much of the text addresses specifically the health issues of Africans in the region. The NUC locates a copy at the John Carter Brown Library, and OCLC adds another fourteen, under a variety of accession numbers. The imprint suggests that Bertin wrote the book in Santo Domingo, and likely hoped to market it there - it was clearly a work of practical use and importance in the West Indies. SABIN 5011. WELLCOME H.17. OCLC 14837765.

SPALLANZANI
1786. Very rare Second Edition published by Chez Barthélémi Chirol, in Geneva 1785. Original French edition, but missing 3 folding plates. Book has some very light foxing in the interior but page conditions are very good overall, with no tears or inscriptions. 413 pages with binding in full marbled period calfskin. Ornate ribbed back. Title piece in red morocco. Small restoration required to the upper cover as it has small break from spine. This is a fundamental work on the theory of generation. Spallanzani's conclusions predate Pasteur's by nearly a century. He notably refutes the theory of spontaneous generation; It was while working to refute this famous concept that Spallanzani discovered the role of spermatozoa and ovaries in mammals, through his observations on external reproduction in frogs; he will also be the first to perform artificial insemination in a bitch. The author also demonstrates regeneration in lizards. Senebier translated most of Spallanzani's works into French, he was also a scientist. [Attributes: Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

A collection of over 40 poems by Jane Cave (later Winscom), a Welsh woman who showed a talent for poetry from an early age and published her first collection at Winchester in 1783. In this second collection, the poems are rearranged, a few eliminated and new ones added. There were three subsequent editions, each with an impressive list of subscribers. Cave's poems cover a variety of subjects: love, marriage, elegies, epitaphs and "she also addresses the perennial topic of a reader who disbelieves that she can, as a woman, really have written her works herself" - Isobel Grundy in the ODNB. "What is known about her derives largely from editions of her verse. . . . How she supported herself is unclear, but it was perhaps as a servant or teacher. . . . Marsili examined every aspect of the subject: the morphology of the basin and relationship between the lands under and above water the water's properties (color, temperature, salinity) and its motion (waves, currents, tides) and biology of the sea, which foretold the advent of marine botany. Land Grant. John Parr
[Halifax. Probably by Anthony Henry]. 1786.. folio., 37x 23.5cm, [4]p., (p.3-4, blank), 1 sheet, laid paper, ms. docketted on the verso, starting tears on three folds, fore-edges frayed, very good copy, rare. WorldCat, 1 copy, Universit de Montral. Aurora, 1 or 2 copies. Not in Tremaine, T.P.L., or Dennis. This scarce example of early Nova Scotia printing was almost certainly executed by Anthony Henry, who was the government printer from 1770, and was later, in 1788, commissioned King's Printer. His only rival in Halifax, John Howe, is not known to have printed any government publications in the 1780's. This land grant lists all the Loyalists grants made in the Cape Negro River area of Shelburne County, with David Jeffries' name underlined in ink indicating that this was Jeffries' copy. The hand-written title on the blank leaf reads: "Grant to Jeffries of Lot 186 containing 100 acres on Cape Negro River. Argyle." Parr, John (1725-1791), governor of Nova Scotia, 1782-91, born in Dublin. . He joined the British Army and by 1771 he reached the rank of Lt.-Col. And in 1782 he was appointed governor of Nova Scotia. It was during his period of office that the Loyalist migration to Nova Scotia took place, and that New Brunswick was made a separate province; and Saint John, New Brunswick was first named Parrtown in his honour. His commission was changed in 1876, to that of lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia, instead of governor; and he was thus the last to hold the post of governor and commander-in-chief of Nova Scotia. . TREW, Christoph Jacob, [C.G. von MURR and others].
[86 of 88]; [49 of] 51, [1] pp.The first two of three volumes of the first and only edition of one of the greatest 18th-century flower books, with all 119 magnificent coloured plates produced for these two volumes. The present set was no doubt issued before volume three appeared (title-page 1786). One rarely finds two copies with the same make-up. The present set is a fine paper copy, with the plates on the better quality Dutch paper at a higher price. Although Trew is named as the author, most of the text appears to have been written by the classical scholar C.G. von Murr (1733-1811). The 128 beautifully illustrated flowers range from 24 to 50 cm in height and sometimes include details of the roots or a butterfly or other insects. "One of the finest records of the cultivated flowers of the period" (Dunthorne). "Exceedingly rare" and "magnificent flower book" (Hunt, where the book is not described because it was acquired just before the catalogue went to press). "One of the most decorative florilegia of the mid-eighteenth century" (Blunt). "One of the great florilegias ... probably the best work born of the collaboration of the artist ... Ehret and ...Trew ... [Murr's text is] among the most learned of horticultural writings" (apps.kew.org). It includes a wide variety of cultivated flowers, including many tulips, and is especially interesting for its detailed views of the reproductive parts (stamens and pistils). With a contemporary armorial bookplate and a 20th-century owner's inscription. Since the two volumes were bound together, the volume 2 title-page naming Wirsing was … [Click Below for Full Description]

In a discussion of the infamous Thucydides maxim, ÒThe most virtuous women are the ones about whom the least is said,Ó the author writes: ÒNoi siamo spose e madri; siamo pur noi che facciamo la riunione e la dolcezza de la famiglie,Ó (p. 7). In the preface to the present work, the author explains that the book is intended to inform readers about the ways in which religious, political, and social circumstances shaped important female figures throughout European history (p. iii). Some of the women mentioned by name include Mary Stuart, Catherine deÕ Medici, and Joanna I of Naples. Octavo. iv, 185 pp. Contemporary flexible boards, stitched. Some foxing to boards. Title in manuscript on spine. 1 Ó portion of spine is coming loose but still attached. Some light toning to endpapers, and a bit of faint foxing throughout, mostly at margins. Lower pastedown coming up at fore-edge, though still firmly attached to inside of lower board. Piece missing at fore-edge of leaves E7 and E8, affecting margin but not text. A gathering slightly sprung. Contemporary ink signature to margin of page iii. Bookplate of collector, printer, and illustrator John Lewis (1912-1996)Êon front pastedown. Walker, John (editor); Addison, Joseph; Milton, John; Pope, Alexander
Printed for G.G.J. and J. Robinson, Pater-noster Row, London, 1786. First edition, presentation copy, of this exemplary selection of English literature for young readers, warmly inscribed by editor John Walker: "To William Dinwoody, Esqr. / in testimony of a long & unabating / friendship this book is presented / by the Author." Teacher and lexicographer John "Elocution" Walker (1732-1807) had an early career on the stage, playing minor parts in David Garrick's company at Drury Lane. In 1769, he left the theater and established a successful practice as a teacher of elocution, lecturing and publishing widely. He was friendly with Samuel Johnson and Edmund Burke, who introduced him as "Mr Walker, whom not to know, by name at least, would argue want of knowledge of the harmonies, cadences, and proprieties of our language" (ODNB). Walker would be best remembered, however, for his work as a lexicographer. His Rhyming Dictionary (1775) and Critical Pronouncing Dictionary(1791) were hugely influential, and remained in print into the twentieth century. English Classics Abridged provides a carefully expurgated selection of highlights from Addison's letters in the Spectator, Pope's Essay on Criticism and Essay on Man, and Milton's Paradise Lost, along with a critical introduction. Walker explains: "The judicious Mr. Knox, in his Treatise on Education, wishes to confine young ladies to the perusal of only three or four authors; namely, Milton, Addison, and Pope, and this restriction, if applied to the younger students of the other sex, seems equally founded on good sense; as by experie … [Click Below for Full Description]

PARIS; [COQUÉAU, Claude Philibert (1755-1794)] and Bernard POYET (1742-1824)
[Paris], 1786. 4to (231 x 183 mm). 44pp. Three large folding engraved plates. Late 19th-/early 20th-century boards. Intermittent foxing. Provenance: with contemporary ink annotations in French on the title identifying designers of other plans; Bibliothèque Imperiale (inkstamp on some text leaves and plates, duplicate stamp); Louis Greenbaum (bookplate). [BOUND WITH:] Two copies of: Supplément au mémoire... Paris: Desenne, Bailly, Petit, 1786. 4to. 63pp. FIRST EDITIONS. The plates depict an aerial plan of the hotel and its environs; a detailed plan of the first floor; and two perspective views on one sheet. The Hôtel-Dieu de Paris is the oldest hospital in the city. The present texts document the plans for reconstructing it after the ascension of Louis XVI, who, unlike his father, favored renovation rather than demolition of the existing structure. The architect Bernard Poyet was supervisor of works in the city of Paris. He proposed a new façade based on Rome's Colosseum. The design was composed of a series of pavilions converging towards a center, like the spokes of a wheel merging at the hub. His plan was rejected in favor of a more utilitarian design. by de Compagnie, 1786. - Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli is considered the founding father of modern oceanography. "In 1724 he published the first treatise on oceanography, 'Histoire physique de la mer'. Marsili examined every aspect of the subject: the morphology of the basin and relationship between the lands under and above water the water's properties (color, temperature, salinity) and its motion (waves, currents, tides) and biology of the sea, which foretold the advent of marine botany. Among the plants he numbered animals like corals, which before his time had been regarded as inorganic matter" (DSB). He was the founder of the Accademia delle Scienze dell'Istituto di Bologna and became member in 1722 of the Royal Society and was introduced by Newton. Marsigli's first essay on this subject under the title "Osservazioni naturali intorno al mare" was published in Venice, 1711. An extended version was issued "Histoire physique de la Mer" in Amsterdam, 1725, of which the above offered edition is a translation. The plates show sponges, corals, algae, sea-weeds etc. The frontispiece shows Neptune seated on a shell. - 010

¶ Bolton I.447 - Hoefer II.557 - Duveen p.225 - Smeaton Fourcroy p.180/82 - Wellcome III. 47.

Palermo, parish of S. Ippolito, Ministri degli Infirmi:]
[Palermo] [], 1786. Large 4to., pp. [68]. Title in red, with floral decoration (possibly faded gilt) below, and decorative borders in red and again possibly gilt. Borders throughout rest of book in red and ink, small decorations in red and ink. Some interesting crossings out and occasional additions, every leaf with a small signature. A good thick paper. A light spray of worming, mainly to margins, legibility unaffected, some strengthening to gutters. Bound in an attractive contemporary tan sheep, panelled and decorated in gilt, central floral ornaments in shape of cross with a saintly figure at centre, probably the Virgin Mary (see crescent moon); worming again to binding. Multi-coloured edges, decorative pastedowns. Fine manuscript of statutes of a congregation devoted to caring for the sick, which was attached to the parish of S. Ippolito in Palermo. These care-workers use the initials of the Camillians, an order founded by San Camillo de Lellis (1550-1614) who wear red crosses. It was from them that the insignia was adopted by the Red Cross. The statutes, completed in 1786, include instructions on the different office-holders, and the qualities and devotions required of members. An addendum of 1799, signed by the congregation, contains rules on caring duties. Every leaf of this attractive document is signed, and the text also contains interesting crossings out and corrections. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Chester: Author, 1786. A good example of a very rare and significant aviation book. "The Narrative of a Balloon Excursion from Chester, the Eighth of September 1785........." The book itself is complete and firm. All pages (viii, 361pp) and plates (4) present and in place. The title page and dedication page both have had extensive paper restoration work but there is no loss of text. A little insect damage to the front edges of these two pages, minor. The rest of the text pages throughout the book are in very good condition with some foxing spots, toning and dust marks. One page has a publishing flaw with thinning paper and a hole to the fore margin not affecting the text. The folding plates are very good, complete and in place. Two are coloured as called for. One of the coloured plates has a small closed tear at one fold resulting from careless opening. There is some edge creasing to two plates where careless closing has occurred. The binding is firm but sadly the vellum has been attacked by insects in the distant past and does need attention. Overall this is a good example of a very scarce book in need of some acceptable work. C49. [Attributes: First Edition]

Ellis, John
London: Benjamin White and Son, 1786. xii, 208, 63 copper plates. Hardback. 4to, recased, in orig. cont. marbled boards (rubbed/scuffed), rebacked and recornered with new calf in antique style, raised bands and gt rules to spine, red leather title-piece, original endpapers preserved. Some browning and foxing, occasionally heavy. Systematically arranged and described by the late Daniel Solander. First edition. Drawings and engravings by J. Barnes, J. Miller, James Roberts. John Ellis (c. 1710-1776) was a pioneering zoologist and microscopist who established the animal nature of zoophytes and laid the foundation of marine biology in Britain and Europe. His two books, 'Natural History of the Corallines' (1755) and the posthumous 'Natural History of Zoophytes' (1786, partly written by Solander), were seminal works. Ellis's zoophyte descriptions and professionally drawn engravings were outstanding. Following the deaths of both Ellis and Solander, Ellis' daughter, Martha Watt, enlisted Sir Joseph Banks's help to retrieve the manuscript of the 'Natural History of Zoophytes' from Solander's effects at the Swedish embassy, and ensured publication. John Reinhold Forster
Condition: Good. Luke White, Dublin,1786. First English Edition. Hardcover. Important work by significant scientist and explorer who served with Captain James Cook on his second voyage of discovery. Johann Reinhold Forster (1729-1798), author and naturalist, was born in Prussia. He moved to England in 1766, eventually producing pamphlets on natural history. His acquaintance with Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander allowed him to be elected fellow of the Royal Society; another influential acquaintance got him the position of scientist on Captain Cook's second voyage, when Banks withdrew. It was Forster who convinced Andreas Sparrman, who was exploring South African natural history at Cape Town, to join the expedition. The volume consists of Books I, II & III. Book III, 'Discoveries Made in the North in Modern Times', Section XXXVII pertains to Cook's last voyage. Forster writes about the naming of Bering's Straits, the ice which prevented any further travel north, and the return to the Sandwich Islands, "which he had discovered just before his arrival on this coast". The death of Cook is described: "the young men that were with him must have been in some measure undisciplined and disorderly, otherwise he would not have lost his life". (p404). 4to, 489pp, Index, Includes folding map of the North Pole (frontispiece) by Forster. Full calf, with raised bands, gilt rules at spine. Boards rubbed and worn. Spine shows two digs and rubbing. Wear and chip to spine label. Title page with missing corner. A couple pages with tape repairs. Good overall. Bid with confidence!
