Journal of Captain Cook's Last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, on Discovery;Performed in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780. Illustrated with Cuts, and a Chart, shewing the Tracks of the Ships employed in this Expedition.

1785 - Second edition. Folding map repaired without loss, & 10 engraved plates (one folding). 8vo. Contemporary calf, rebacked. [viii], lvii, 376pp. London, E. Newbery, Rickman, second lieutenant of the Resolution, but for the greater part of the voyage on the Discovery, was the first to publish an account of Cook's Third Voyage. The work was, however, wrongly attributed to Ledyard until 1930 when Judge Howay demonstrated that Ledyard had simply copied whole sections of Rickman's book. The publisher, Newbery, recognised the potential of Rickman's anonymous journal, correctly assuming that it would be as successful as Marra's account of the Second Voyage, which he had also published. The folding plate is of some importance being the first representation in print of Hawaii: ?Representation of the Murder of Capt Cook at O-Why-ee? Forbes 106; Hill, p.253; Holmes 53; Howes R276; Streeter 3474. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

XXVI, (2), 356 ; II.

Voyage to the Pacific Ocean. (With Plates and Charts from the Atlas Bound In).

London: H. Hughs, 1785. 6/25/16. Three vol. 4to. (10), xcvi, 421; (12), 548; (10), 556 pp. b/w folding charts and plates. This is the second edition of Cook?s final voyage. As we know, Cook died before the voyage could be completed, and James King took over, completing the third volume of the three volume official report. This third voyage was issued with a folio atlas containing two maps and sixty-one plates. However, in some sets the contents of the folio atlas were folded and bound into the text volumes. This is such a set. It contains the twenty-four maps and plates called for in the "list of plates" as well as the two maps and sixty-one plates that should be in the atlas. I just sold an atlas volume for $7500, so this set, with text and extra plates, is good value. See Beddie 1552. Bound in full mottled calf showing some scuffing and wear, but with spine labels and gilt decorations intact. Some offsetting and foxing; pages evenly tanned. The set, with maps and plates.

The Trial of Mrs. Harriet Errington . . . for Committing Adultery with Augustus Murray Smith . . . Captain Buckley . . . Captain Southby . . . The Reverend Thomas Walker . . . and Many Others

London: Printed for R. Randall, 1785, 1785. First edition, one of three recorded issues, all with minor variations. ESTC T95752, which records three copies of this issue (BL, Oxford and one copy in Europe) and five copies of the other two issues (BL twice, Oxford, Cornell and one copy in Europe). Binding a little rubbed and worn; very good copy.. 8vo, modern blue quarter morocco, blue cloth boards, gilt lettering. Frontis. Terminal leaf of publisher's advertisements. A collection of 21 depositions documenting the wanton and, if true, sometimes bizarre behavior of Harriet Errington. She became infamous for her numerous and aggressive acts of unfaithfulness to her husband George, who petitioned the courts to divorce her. Several pamphlets were published about the salacious details of her bawdy acts, one poetical epistle, and the publisher of this pamphlet, R. Randall, also published her anonymously written memoirs, which were clearly not by her. The frontis depicts three scenes from the depositions by "a person intimately acquainted with the parties in this cause, and who was present at most of the scenes exhibited . . ." All of the contemporary publications about Harriet Errington are rare.

Artist: Lane Michael London ; Issued in: London; date: d 1785 - Artist: Lane, Michael London 1785; Issued in: London; date: d 1785; - Condition: Perfect condition; Seachart shows Fogo Island is the largest of the offshore islands of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It lies off the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Fogo Island is one of the oldest named features on the coast of Newfoundland. The Bertius map from 1606 shows Fogo Island as one of only about a dozen important features around the coast of Newfoundland. On French maps of the 16th to 18th centuries the island is referred to as Ile des Fougues. The island was likely named by Portuguese explorers and early fishing crews in the 16th century (Fogo means Fire in Portuguese). Until 1783 Fogo Island was on an area of the coast called the French Shore.

H. Hughs, for G. Nicol and T. Cadell, 1785. Seconda edizione. In Appendice al terzo volume: I - Tables of the route of the Resolution and Discovery, the variation of the compass and meteorological observations, during the voyage; II - A comparative table of Numerals, exhibiting the affinity and the extent of language, which is found to prevail in all the Islands of the Eastern Sea, and derived from that spoken on the Continent of Asia, in the country of the Malayes; III - Vocabulary of the language of the Friendly Islands, May &c 1777; IV - Vocabulary of the language of Nootka or King George's Sound, April 1778; V - Vocabulary of the language of Atooi, one of the Sandwich Islands, January 1778; VI - Table of the affinity between the languages spoken at Oonalashka and Norton Sound, and those of the Greenlanders and Esquimaux; VII - A table of the variations of the compass, observed by Captain Cook during his passage from England to the Cape of Good Hope.         Letters of the Right Honourable Lady M-y W--y M--e: written during her travels in Europe, Asia, and Africa, to persons of distinction, men of letters, &c. in different parts of Europe. Which contain among other curious relations, accounts of the policy and manners of the Turks; Drawn from Sources that have been inaccessible to other Travellers. A new edition. The four volumes complete in one.

      - London: printed for J. Osborne and T. Griffin, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and J. Mozley, Gainsbrough, M.DCC.LXXXV [1785]. Sm. 8vo, ix, [3], 212 pp. Early or original calf, red morocco label. Early signature of Julia Aglionby and bookplate of Staffield Hall (home of the Aglionby-Fetherstonhaugh families). Free endpapers removed, a very pleasant copy. An attractive later edition of Montagu's travel memoirs. Lady Mary and her husband, the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, travelled overland to Turkey in 1716. Her letters, probably intended for publication from the start, are the first known secular account of the Near East by a Western woman. Lady Mary rightly emphasised the novelty of her accounts as a woman traveller with access to female-only environments. Her descriptions of Turkish bath houses are only one part of what made her letters fascinating and very popular. ESTC T79453: 6 UK and 12 US. Wayward Women, pp. 32-34. See also Cox II p.229.

Indietro liscio decorato. Come una mostra in pelle nera. Tripla mentoring netto sui piatti. Cappellini e angoli ripristinati. Poche macchie sparse.

[??????. Sangoku tsüran zenzu. General Map of Three Countries].

(circa1790).. Coloured folding Japanese manuscript map copy of ?????????? [Sangoku tsüran yochi rotei zensu General Route Map of Three Countries]. 52 x 71.5cm folds to 24 x 13cm. Small holes at folds and on margins, soiling along central fold, dark paper strip along edges. Paper covered card covers insect damaged. The controversial Japanese book and five accompanying maps, 'Sangoku tsüran zusetsu' published in 1785, describes the geography and customs of three countries - Kankoku (Korea) , Yezo or Ezo (present day Hokkaido), and Ryükyü (present day Okinawa). At the time of its publication Ha Yezo was only partially occupied by the Tokugawa government and although from 1609 Ryükyü was in reality under the control of the Shimazu clan in Satsuma (present Kagoshima Prefecture), the Shimazu clan allowed it to be an independent country superficially. Among the five maps published to accompany Sangoku tsüran yochi (General Route Map of Three Countries), is this map of Japan and its neighbouring countries which this manuscript map is a copy of. The other four maps are: a map of Ryükyü (????), Yezo (?????), the eight provinces of Korea (?????), and Ogasawara Islands (????). This particular map, showing Japan and its neighbours attracts strong feelings even today as it shows the disputed islands, known to the Japanese as Takeshima ????/??, Dokdo - ??/?? to Koreans and Liancourt Rocks to English speakers, crucially marked as "Korea's possession". This is used by Korea as evidence for the legitimacy of their claim. The book and its accompanying maps, were an attempt to define Japan's borders and were banned on publication because the author, Hayashi Shihei, criticised Japanese maritime defence policy. As frequently is the case, the banning of Sangoku tsüran zusetsu did nothing to deter interest in what Hayashi Shihei had to say and copies of the maps were made and circulated underground. This copy appears to be one of these underground copies. Kanji numbers are neatly written in the border framing the map showing longitude and latitude. At first glance this suggests accuracy but in fact the map does not accurately reflect scientific knowledge in Japan at that period. Only a few years before in 1779 Nagakubo Sekisui published a much more accurate map of Japan. The map is imprecise, especially as the map maker moved further from the familiar regions of Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku. However it is clear that Hayashi Shihei's intention was not to concern himself with cartographical detail but as he says on the map itself "This is a small map to show the geographical relations between Japan and neighbouring countries such as Korea, Ryükyü, Yezo, Sakhalin, Kamchatka, and Sea Otter Island [Urup]." As this text suggests, the purpose was to show the location of Japan amongst her neighbouring countries rather to give a precise description of Japan and these countries. Previously in Japan there had been not much interest in mapping the region outside of Japan however with the increasing visits and incursions into Japanese territory by Russians, Dutch and other outsiders it became important to define and clarify Japan's borders. The manuscript is not dated but almost certainly this copy was made in the late Edo period, late 18th to early 19th century. .

First edition, and an absolutely delicious set in fine contemporary turquoise morocco, gilt, of this well-known book which enjoyed many later editions. Paterson (1738-1825), is most famous for his series of road books and cartographical works; his main contribution was to improve the information on roads. While making no significant innovations, "he made improvements in style and presentation, however, and added factual detail -- so much so that his name was for many years an indicator of reliability in road books, and was attached to them long after he had stopped compiling them."-ODNB.

This is the second edition of Cook’s final voyage.

Among the five maps published to accompany Sangoku tsüran yochi (General Route Map of Three Countries), is this map of Japan and its neighbouring countries which this manuscript map is a copy of. The other four maps are: a map of Ryükyü (????), the General Map of Three Countries (??????), the eight provinces of Korea (?????), and Ogasawara Islands (????). In his notes on this map of Ezo or Hokkaido, Hayashi discusses the sea lanes indicated by dotted lines and notes "Since, in recent years, men of Orosha [Russians] have taken possession of the territory east of Tartary, this land is called Orosha, or Kamusasuka.... Also since the Russians all wear red coats, the residents of Ezo call it Red Ezo in their dialect." Following the publication of 'Sangoku tsüran zusetsu' the authorities ordered the banning of the publication and for the woodblocks used to print the book and maps to be destroyed. Hayashi Shihei was imprisoned as his work was regarded as an offence against Japan's seclusion policies at the time. He died the following year. .
