Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charles II decree of the 12 of May 1691, the Greats of Spain were obliged to take part to the cortege, which was then followed by two series of pyrotechnical shots and music, dan

'The book is a survey of existing information concerning various kinds of airs and the experiments and discoveries of Lavoisier, Priestley, Scheele and others. The author presents his ideas concerning the nature of gases (pure air, oxygen is the basis of all), phlogiston, heat, combustion, acidity (oxygen not the necessary constituent), etc.' (Cole). '.all combustibles (including perhaps diamond) contain inflammable air, which he identified with phlogiston and thought it is contained in metals. He called oxygen 'pure air' and nitrogen (phlogisticated air) 'impure air'. Pure air consists of vesicles inflated by the principle of heat. Nitrous air (nitrous oxide) is a compound of nitric acid and inflammable air or phlogiston. Fixed air, which he called 'acid air', can be converted into phlogisticated air or into pure air.' (Partington). 8vo (215 × 140 mm), pp. [6], 474, [2], complete with half-title, leaf P2 a cancel.         The Theory and Practice of Aerostation. [Bound together with] Description, and Use, of the Telescopical Mother-of-Pearl Micrometer

London printed for the author and sold by C. Dilly, P. Elmsly, and J. Stockdale, 1785. And London: printed for the author and sold by C. Dilly, 1793 - Octavo (208 x 130 mm). Contemporary tree calf handsomely rebacked to style, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label. 8 page index and author's ad. The Micrometer being 41 pages with two leaves of preliminaries. 2 engraved folding plates, extra-illustrated with 3 plates from an unknown edition of Faujas de Saint-Fond's book on the Montgolfier brothers, Description des Expériences de la Machine Aérostatique. Armorial bookplate. Professionally rebacked and with the corners and edges of the boards restored, occasional light spotting to the edges of the textblock and the contents, a little toning and offsetting of the plates, mostly affecting the plates introduced from the Saint-Fond, but generally clean and fresh. A very good copy. First edition of the first English-language scientific treatise on ballooning. This copy includes Cavallo's uncommon 1793 treatise on the mother-of-pearl micrometer he invented, and is extra-illustrated with three plates from an unknown edition of Saint-Fond's book on the Montgolfier brothers, Description des Expériences de la Machine Aérostatique (first published 1783-84). In his early twenties Tiberius Cavallo (1749-1809) moved from Italy to London, where "he moved easily in cultivated circles and developed an interest in electrical experiments, in particular on atmospheric electricity. His experimental skill and inventiveness brought him quickly to the notice of some of the leading natural philosophers of the day. He designed an ingenious electrometer for detecting and measuring the smallest quantity of electricity in the atmosphere, and in 1777 he published A Complete Treatise on Electricity in Theory and Practice with Original Experiments. The work was a compendium of contemporary understanding of electricity, and in it Cavallo emphasized the importance of experiments for the advancement of natural knowledge and identified possible directions for further investigation, both practical and theoretical. The Treatise was well received, and it earned him a high reputation within the Royal Society of London, of which he was elected a fellow on 9 December 1779" (ODNB). Cavallo was a talented experimentalist and inventor; he undertook serious investigations into topics such as the medical uses of electricity and the physical properties of air and other gases. He invented and improved on a large number of instruments, and also acted as an international agent for London instrument makers. Serving as the Bakerian Lecturer of the Royal Society ibetween 1782 and 1792, he was a skilled science communicator whose books and lectures were well-received by the public as well as his peers. The History and Practice of Aerostation contains a detailed history of ballooning and aerostatic experiments, including early unmanned flights, the work of the Montgolfier brothers, Pilatre de Rozier, and a large number of other amateur and professional experimenters. The second half of the volume covers the theory of ballooning with sections on the nature of air, the construction of balloons, the mechanisms for sending them aloft and bringing them back to Earth, scientific experiments and observations that can be made during a voyage, and a short essay on the uses to which the new invention may be put in the future. "It can hardly be expected that, in the present state of the subject, all, or even a few, of the uses, to which the aerostatic machines may be applied, should be precisely known, since the decisive proof of experience has not yet been sufficiently shewn" (p. 320). The second text bound into this volume describes one of Cavallo's inventions, a "simple and valuable" micrometer, for making small measurements while using a microscope or telescope. "The Mother-of-pearl micrometer is a very simple, and at the same time, a very accurate instrument of the kind. It consists of a small semitransparent scale or slip of Mother-of-pearl, about the 20th part of an inch broad, and of the thickness of common writing paper, divid [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Seine radierten Illustrationen wurden zunächst von Joh. Heinr. Brand (1740-1783), vom dritten Teil an auch von C. Fr. Schuricht (geb. The letter is docketted in Boudinot's hand verso. Expected wear including fold marks, minor toning, and light ink bleeding, each page measuring 7.375" x 8.625".General James Robertson (1717-1788), recently retired to England after an illustrious military and political career in America, writes a letter to New Jersey lawyer Elias Boudinot (1740-1821) regarding the financial matters of James Drummond, 1st Baron of Perth (1744-1800). Lord Drummond had inherited the earldom of Perth following the death of his older brother Thomas in 1781. (Thomas Lundin attempted to negotiate a peace between the 13 colonies and George III immediately preceding the American Revolution.) In 1785, Boudinot had just agreed to serve as one of Lord Drummond's attorneys in America, joining a Mr. Smith and a Capt. Rutherford already representing family interests in New Jersey. It is not entirely clear why General Robertson took such an interest in Lord Drummond's affairs, although it is likely that the two knew each other as both were Scottish officers in the British Army.In the letter, Robertson speculates about the total worth of the Perth estate as well as how Lord Drummond's finances would be affected by his recent marriage. General Robertson estimated that income from Lord Drummond's "North Country" [Scotland] estates amounted to about £10,000, but that £4,000 of outstanding debts had also been inherited by the new earl. Neither was Lord Drummond's financial situation ameliorated by his marriage to Clementina Elphinstone (1749-1822) almost exactly one month before this letter was written. General Robertson underscores the importance of marrying for money: "I'm told Capt. Drummond intends to discharge them [the debts] faithfully, [as] he has lately marryd [sic] a daughter of Lord Elphinstones [sic] a Lady of beauty and merit - but without the third requisite for making the married state happy - " To pay off some of the debt, Lord Drummond "deems to entertain a wish that the ... American estate may be discharged there as it will be some time before saving can be made to answer all the debts and demands here ... "". The "American estate" here described were tracts around modern Perth, Amboy New Jersey acquired by the family in the seventeenth century. The rest of the letter goes into more detail about various financial matters. General Robertson ends his letter by wishing that it "can contribute to your amusement and convenience, [as] this is the only advantage I can propose from living in a country at a distance from you. I am with much regard Dear Sir your obliged & obt servant James Robertson".Portions of the text with untouched spelling errors can be found below:"Dear Sir, Convinced of your regard for poor Lord Drummond, and pleasd with an Idea, that the civilitys I have received from you was markd with some regard for me I'm happy that you will undertake the troublesome task of joining Mr. Smith and Capt. Rutherford as attorney to Capt. Drummond in America... This gentleman is about to enter into possession of a princely estate - the North Country - will probably be worth ten thousand a year, when well managed, altho it has not produced a government above those ... I have given him the information I received from your letter, desiring that his sister Lady Rachel may send me a deed appointing the attorneys named by him to be ? here. I have repeated to him the resume I gave him of your services to Lord Drummond, and indeed to the whole family as I do not know whether Lord Drummond had satisfied your trouble till the time of his leaving ... "General James Robertson served as an officer in the British Army during the French & Indian War. From 1779 to 1783, Robertson served as 40th colonial governor of New York. Following the British surrender, Robertson returned to England where he died four years after writing this letter. Elias Boudinot managed a thriving law practice, served as Commissary-General of Prisoners during the Revolutionary War, was elected a New Jersey state representative, and later administrated the United States Mint. James Drummond, 1st Baron of Perth served in the British Army in India during the 1780s. In later life, he managed his Scottish estates and served as a British peer."

Leipzig, In commission bei Place of publication not identified Crusius 1785 - 8°, XVIII, 286 pages. Johann Gottlieb Karl Spazier (* 20. April 1761 in Berlin; ¿ 19. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Revendigola (Tav.39)

Venezia 1785. - Acquaforte e bulino di mm 261 x 182. II/VI. A destra in basso numero 39. Venne ripubblicato in Inghilterra altre quattro volte.
