[Libretto]

[Paris]: Au Palais-Royal: Ruault, 1785. Octavo. Full mottled tan paper boards, spine with title label gilt. 1f. (title), [i] (half-title), [i] (publication and editor's notes), lvi (preface), [i] (part-title), [i] (named cast list), [3]-236, 237 (approbation and printer's note), [i] (blank) pp. Publisher's decorative woodcut device to title. With the names of cast members, presumably for the play's premiere at the Théâtre Françis on April 27, 1784. Binding slightly worn; upper joint split. Light foxing and some staining; occasional minor wear. A very good copy overall. First Edition, early issue. Scarce. Cordier: Bibliographie des oeuvres de Beaumarchais, no. 128, stating that the earliest issues of this edition do not contain engraved plates. Without the printed note to the foot of p. 152 found in later issues. With a printed note to the final page of the play stating that the music was by Antoine Laurent Baudron (1742-1834), who also collaborated with Beaumarchais in providing music for his "Le Barbier de Séville," including the famous tune "Je suis Lindor," the theme of which has been used by Mozart for his 12 Variations K354/299a. Beaumarchais was harp teacher to the daughters of Louis XV. "[He] successfully included Baudron's storm music as a prelude to Act 4 of Le barbier, and, alongside continued use of vaudeville tunes in Le mariage de Figaro... stretched Comédie Française conventions by introducing a whole scene of dance, song and mime for the 'coronation' of Suzanne with the bride's head-dress... As if to vindicate Beaumarchais's musical instinct, Le barbier de Séville attracted settings by Benda, Paisiello, Isouard and Rossini, while the Mozart-Da Ponte collaboration in Le nozze di Figaro proved just how much of the original play was translatable into music." Rudolph Angermüller in Grove Music Online.

Paris:: Rue et Hotel Serpente, 1785.. 200x125 mm. 8vo. xvi, [4], 624 pp. Half-title, 10 folding engraved copperplates (by Sellier), [pl. 3 has a manuscript annotation relating to the electrical machine of the authorÂ’s design], errata; lacks the 2 privilege leaves at end. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards; cover corners showing, joints mended with kozo. 19th-century stamp on title and elsewhere of Binet Dufour; inscription “Electrobiologique Traitement Electropathique, Par M. Guérin, Boulevard de Strasbourg…” Occasional neat manuscript ink corrections or marginalia. Very good. Second edition of a work on electricity and magnetism originally published in 1781. The work mentions a number of electrical devices used to make demonstrations and experiments. This period marks a stark contrast in instruments used for experiments and instruments used for demonstrations. See: Thomas L. Hankins, ?Robert J. Silverman, Instruments and the Imagination, 2014, p. 58. ¶ “The final, greatly enlarged edition Â… of this comprehensive history of electricity and magnetism, and their development and applications, including use for curing diseases. Benjamin Franklin and his experiments are fully discussed as are those of Gilbert, Hauksbee, Ingenhousz, Nollet, [Volta] and others. Extensive accounts are given of atmospheric electricity and lightning conductors, with some original experiments of the author, who claims to have been the first to use glass plates with electrical machines in 1756. He also described an improved Leyden jar. “A work of merit” (Wheeler Gift). As with his other works on physics, this contains numerous references to chemical experiments and phenomena.” – Neville catalog. ¶ Arranged in five sections, the first offers a history of the origins and progress of electricity to the present period (c.1785) and the Leyden jar. Section II relates to “Leyde” (Leyden Jar invented by Pieter van Musschenbroek of Leiden, with Ewald Kleist also achieving the same invention) and the theories of Benjamin Franklin. Sec. III: Analyzing electricity and comparing it to thunder and magnetism. Within this section deals with meteorology as thunder applied to electrical phenomena, and also the means to divert lightning, the relationship between magnetism and electricity. Sec. IV: Applications made using electrical fluid. With electricity in a void, in electrical fish, electrical properties of tourmaline, “The electric stone.” Also: using the electrophorus generator [invented by Johan Carl Wilcke in 1762], producing a static charge. Article V in this section offers more on two pocket-sized electric machines that produce ‘some strange phenomena of electric commotion.Â’ The volume finishes with four proposed problems. Adding to all this, the half-title bears an advertisement for his nephew* Rouland, a demonstrator of physics at the University of Paris, and also a course for electrical instruments. * [Mottelay suggests “N.” for RoulandÂ’s first name, though WorldCat and other sources do not have his first name]. See: Hankins & Silverman, p. 59. ¶ Provenance: “Binet-Dufour á Houdan s soise propriétaire” – a French instrument maker, known for their barometers. ¶ Sigaud de la Fond (1730-1810) was a pupil of Nollet, and taught experimental physics in Paris, succeeding him in 1760 at the Collège Louis-le-Grand, following his mentor. “Sigaud was a prolific writer in the fields of experimental physics, chemistry, medicine, and (apparently as a consequence of his early Jesuit training) theology. Experimental science was a fashionable pursuit among the leisured classes in eighteenth-century France, and Sigaud was one of several illustrious popularizers who satisfied the intellectual appetites and curiosities of an ever-in-creasing number of amateurs of science. Popular interest tended toward the more spectacular examples of natural phenomenon: and lectures accompanied by demonstrations, especially on electricity and on the newly discovered gases, always attracted large and enthusiastic crowds.” – Encyclopedia.com. ¶ Bakken p.107; Blake p. 418; Ekelöf, 497; Gartrell, 492; Mottelay, p. 280; Roy G.         Recueil de Tetes Choisies de Personnages Illustres dans les Lettres et dans les Armes

1785. (RAPHAEL) FIDANZA, Paolo. Rome: Bouchard & Gravier, 1785]. Large folio, 46 loose plates (measuring 14 by 19 inches) in later paper-covered portfolio. $3000.Suite of 46 fine and dramatic separate copper-engravings by Paolo Fidanza after RaphaelÂ’s religious portraits in the Vatican, struck for various editions of Bouchard & GravierÂ’s Recueil de Têtes ChoisiesÂ… dÂ’après les Peintures de Raphaël.A collection of engraved portraits made from the Vatican works of Raphael, originally published in five volumes with an Italian title page in 1763, containing 174 fine plates by Paolo Fidanza, painter and Italian engraver, who “studied the great Masters in Rome and carried out according to them this series of heads [by Raphael]” (Benezit). Each of these 46 portraits has an engraved caption and plate number, though the numbers themselves skip sequence and shift between Roman and Arabic numerals— with evidence of burnishing in some cases, indicating later strikes (probably for the 1785 and later editions). See Graesse II:576. Plate of Boccaccio on lighter-weight stock, and repaired with tape. Edges worn and lightly soiled, waterstain to margins of eight plates, just touching images. A wonderful collection of 18th-century Raphael studies.

Einaudi 350. INED 293 ***** First edition.         Wall map of the world - Clouet, Mondhare, 1785.

STUNNING WALL MAP OF THE WORLD?Carte Generale de la Terre ou Mappe Monde avec les Quatres Principaux Systemes . . .? Copper engraving by Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet, published in 1785 by Louis Joseph Mondhare. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 96,5 x 123 cm.Dramatically composed world map, in which mythological figures support the two hemispheres with the solstice. Although its baroque decoration depicts biblical scenes, the map itself bows to modernity by including the tracks of the major Pacific voyages: Jacob Le Maire, Ferdinand Magellan, and Abel Tasman. It is an excellent view of the world as it was known just prior to the great transoceanic explorations that were being launched at the time the map was issued. The Clouet/Mondhare map of the world is one of the most decorative double hemisphere wall maps published in the second half of the 18th century. The map continues the French aristocratic tradition popularised during the reign of Louis XIV. In this grand tradition, the map serves the dual purpose of being both a spectacular object, utilised by the French aristocracy of the 18th century in decorating libraries and salons, and a statement of the worldliness of its owners, depicting the progress of the exploration of the world and scientific models of the known universe, in a perfect marriage with imagery from the classical world and scenes from the Old Testament. The map provides a fine depiction of the most up-to-date information, showing the discoveries of Hawaii and the southeastern coastline of Australia, the earlier routes of numerous 17th and 18th Century explorers are noted, with particular emphasis given to the explorations of Abel Tasman in the Southern Hemisphere, both in New Zealand and Australia. While the routes of many major explorer?s are depicted, publisher Mondhare has retained the mythical depiction of the Sea of the West in North America and offers a number of tantalising options for a northwest passage, while also including a massive nascent depiction of Alaska and the Aleutian Archipelago, which was then at the end of a 40 year period of debate between the theories of the Paris based De L?Isle family of mapmakers, the English cartographer Thomas Jefferys and the Russian Academy. The map is embellished with eight small circular astronomical diagrams including images of lunar and solar eclipses and the known solar system. In the middle below the hemispheres, a model shows us tropics and meridians. The episodes from the Old Testament are in twenty vignettes with descriptive text in French and Spanish. Clockwise from the upper left: the story of Creation, Adam and Eve in Paradise; the Fall of and Punishment of Mankind after disobeying God by eating from the forbidden fruit; Noah?s Ark, where God told Noah to enter the ark with his household and the animals, the ark being afloat throughout The Deluge before it came to rest on the Mountains of Ararat; the Tower of Babel, where man sought to build a tower with its top in the sky, to make a name for themselves and where God confounded their speech so that they could no longer understand each other and scattered them around the world; Abraham who?s belief was tested by commanding the sacrifice of his son Isaac; Jacob blessing his sons; the glory of Joseph with his prediction of seven years of abundance and seven years of famine; the Tables of the Law inscribed with the Ten Commandments when Moses ascended Mount Sinai; the solar eclipse; the death of Samson in the temple of the Philistines; the victory of David over Goliath; Elijah riding his chariot of fire to heaven; Daniel in the lions? den; Job, struck by misfortune, sitting on a dunghill, but despite all his trials faithful to God; Jonah encouraging the Ninevites to do penitence; summoned by archangel Raphael, Tobias Catching a Fish; and lastly the story of Judith. Where Judith, a daring and beautiful widow, who is upset with her Jewish countrymen for not trusting God to deliver them from their foreign conquerors, goes to the camp of the enemy general Holofernes, promising him information on the Israelites. Gaining his trust, she is allowed access to his tent one night as he lies in a drunken stupor. She decapitates him and Israel is saved.Abbot Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet (c. 1730 - 1790) was a French cartographer active in the mid to late 18th century. Clouet held the post of Royal Geographer of the Academie des Sciences de Rouen, he had offices in Paris and Cadiz. Clouet?s most important work is his Geographie Moderne, which was published in various editions from 1776 - 1793. Clouet also produced a series of stunning and highly decorative wall maps depicting the various continents. He followed in the footsteps of Jean-Baptiste Nolin and other French cartographers, reissuing these grand wall-maps in the latter part of the 18th century to decorate the houses of Paris and more unusually Spain.Price: ?23.500,-.

BELIZE (BRITISH HONDURAS) WATERCOLOUR VIEW: ÒPembroke-Hall, New-RiverÓ

[Belize, circa ]. 1785 - Manuscript, pen and ink and wash on laid paper, with handwritten title and key in ink below, signed ÔJohn S. HoareÕ lower right (Good, complete and well executed, but soiled and stained, old folds), 15.8 x 23 cm (6.25 x 9 ins). A historically significant early manuscript view of a mahogany plantation in what is today Belize, one of the very few surviving original 18th Century visual records of British Honduras, by a member of the Hoare Family, the leading clan of the colony. - While the present view is of a small format and not in particularly stellar condition, these factors should not detract from the fact that it is of considerable historical importance to the history of what is today Belize. It is one of only very few surviving original 18th visual records of the fledgling British colony that would become British Honduras, and later Belize. The view was made around 1785, during the period when Britain was consolidating its control over the region. It depicts the recently established Pembroke Hall Plantation, which was then primarily an estate for harvesting valuable mahogany lumber, located on the New River, then the epicenter of the colony. The property was owned by Major Richard Hoare, one of the colonyÕs Crown commissioners and largest landowners, and head of what would become British HondurasÕ first family for over 150 years. The view was drafted by John S. Hoare (fl. 1785-1848), who was probably Major HoareÕs son, who later became a prominent figure in the colony in his own right. Located in what is today the town of Libertad, Belize, Pembroke Hall became the site of the Corozal Sugar Works, which from 1937 to 1985, was the largest agricultural development in British Honduras. The view, while not professionally executed, was drafted with some skill, and maintains a lovely authentic, frontier charm. It showcases Pembroke Hall Plantation from the perspective of looking approximately northward from the New River. The estateÕs rough wooden buildings stand in a small patch of cleared land, punctuating a dense jungle. The prospect grants an unparalleled, authentic view of the nature of a lumber estate, long the lifeblood of the British presence in mainland Central America, labeling all the major buildings and attributes that form its operations. The ÔExplanationÕ below the view labels: 1) The dwelling House (the Hoare residence); 2) The Store; 3) The Cookroom (which was best separated from the other wooden buildings, so as to contain any possible fire); 4 & 5) Negro Houses (the slave quarters); 6) Schooner Richard (supposedly Major Richard HoareÕs ship for carrying cut lumber abroad); 7) Boat Nancy (a small sloop that could nimbly navigate the areaÕs shallow estuarial waters); 8) Pit-Pan (a type of canoe, developed in the region, with a shallow-draft and thick bottom, capable of carrying heavy cargoes in shallow waters); and 9) Scow (a flat-bottomed cargo boat of a European design).

Dublin, 1785. 277 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked. Corners worn; modern bookplate on front pastedown. Minor soiling. About very good. 277 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Mably's work consists of four letters written to John Adams, then the American Minister to Holland, on the government, laws, and political divisions in the United States.  The French took great interest in the form that the American government would take after the Revolution, publishing the constitutions of the thirteen states in 1783.  "Mably comments on the American approach to government as reflected in the constitutions of the thirteen states, and, more specifically, in those of Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Georgia...he offers advice on a national constitution, urging a loose federation rather than a strong central government and warning against excessive democracy" - Cohen.         Structure and Physiology of Fishes... Compared with Those of Man...

1785. First Edition . MONRO, Alexander. The Structure and Physiology of Fishes Explained and Compared with Those of Man and Other Animals. Edinburgh: Charles Elliot, 1785. Folio, later three-quarter tan calf, raised bands. $1750.First edition of ""the first important Edinburgh textbook on comparative anatomy,"" with 44 large copper-engraved plates, some folding (DSB).Both son and father of prominent Scottish anatomists of the same name, Alexander Monro was one of the pioneers of the newly-emerging field of comparative anatomy. [Dai niji Taiko Hōdai no tatakai], [The Second Battle of the Dagu Forts].

No date. Late Edo. Manuscript in black and red ink on two joined sheets. Illustrated 80 x 27.5cm. Stained along upper edge and occasionally extending into the text, some minor insect damage. This neatly executed pen and ink illustration shows the Second Battle of the Dagu Forts guarding the mouth of the river leading to Tientsin during the Second Opium War in which the Anglo-French force was comprehensively defeated and was forced to retreat. The Japanese text incorrectly says "Guiliang prepared the treaty with 56 articles in Shanghai" whereas of course this should read "in Tianjin".Guiliang (1785-1862) the Chinese Imperial Commissioner had in July 1858 been party to the first Treaty of Tianjin with Russia, America, England and France. In this treaty it was stated that these foreign powers had the right to enter Peking to ratify the treaty in 1859. The Chinese recognising what a disaster this would be, over the months that followed the writing of the treaty, tried to change this part of the agreement without success. When an Anglo-French fleet tried to force their way into the river to get to Tianjin, and thence to Peking, having met little resistance in 1858, this second time they were met with unexpected and great opposition and obliged to withdraw.         The Florence Miscellany.

Florence: (Privately) Printed for G. [aetano] Cam. [biagi] printer to His Royal Highness with Permission. 1785 224pp, 3 leaves of engraved music within pagination. 8vo. Some light foxing, mainly to prelims. Bound in recent full brown morocco in period style by Phil Dusel, gilt spines & dentelles. Near contemporary signature of Eliz. Harvey at head of titlepage.ESTC T71265, Rothschild 1437. Provenance: The signature at head of titlepage is possibly that of Miss Elizabeth Harvey, a contemporary of Mrs Piozzi, and a hostess of literary gatherings. She is mentioned in Edward Jerningham and his Friends, by L. Bettany (1919) - 'He knew hostesses whose assemblies Johnson frequented, such as Mrs. Montagu, Mrs. Vesey, Miss Elizabeth Harvey and Miss Monckton'. The Della Cruscans were a coterie of English poets formed in Italy in 1785, when Robert Merry, Bertie Greatheed, William Parsons and Hester Thrale Piozzi found themselves in Florence, 'idly enjoying the Italian sunshine' (British Satire, 142). Greatheed was a wealthy English landowner, who lived in Italy between 1783 and 1785, while Parsons had lived in Bath most of his life and was travelling Italy in 1785. Hester Thrale was already a well-known intellectual by the time she married the Italian musician Gabriel Piozzi and moved to Florence in 1783, having written pieces for the St. James's Chronicle and about to publish her Glimpses of the Italian Society (1786). Robert Merry was to become the most famous member of the Della Cruscans; he had left England in 1784 to escape gambling debts, and travelled for some years through Europe before settling in Florence. The first poetical production of this literary circle was The Arno Miscellany (1784), to which all the original members, except Parsons, contributed. The Arno Miscellany was a short collection of occasional poems privately printed, and which circulated only among a small number of friends. However, it was The Florence Miscellany, published a year after, which became the founding document of Della Cruscanism. This, like The Arno Miscellany, was a collection of occasional poems, printed in Florence by the local publisher G. Cam. Parsons seems to have acted as the collection's editor, and he contributed to the majority of the poetical pieces (thirty-one out of sixty-one), followed by Merry, Piozzi and Greatheed. The Florence Miscellany also contained several pieces by Italian poets, such as Ippolito Pindemonte, Lorenzo Pignotti, Angelo d'Elci, Giuseppe Parini and Marco Lastri, and a concluding serenata by Gabriel Piozzi. In the Preface to The Florence Miscellany, Hester Piozzi clearly sets the tone and intent of the collection, which was meant to be only a past-time, an amateurish writing of poems addressed to each other and not meant for publication. The contributors, Piozzi continues, have no ambition to success, and they are aware that their book of poetry will have little influence on the present and future generations of readers. But it soon began to arouse interest in England. The European Magazine republished poetry from the Miscellany in 1786, and when Robert Merry returned to England the same year, he found himself famous. However, it was not until 1787, when Merry was invited to contribute to The World with poetical pieces, that the Della Cruscan vogue began to make significant headway in England. His first poem, 'The Adieu and Recall to Love', a sentimental piece on love's pleasures and pains, was published in June 1787 under the pseudonym of 'Della Crusca'. A fortnight later, The World published a poem in reply to Merry's piece, which was signed 'Anna Matilda'. From then on, Della Crusca and Anna Matilda started an idealised correspondence in the pages of The World, and initiated a vogue for poetical contributions. (Ref: Lord Byron and the Della Cruscans, S. Bordoni, Nottingham 2006.) Due to censorship issues in Florence at the time, four spaces in the poems were left blank by the printer, and the authors supplied slips for their friends that contained the missing lines. Copies are found with and without the slips pasted in their proper locations. This copy has four slips pasted in on pages 9, 20, 27, and 215.

¶ D S B. XII-553 - Blake p.427 - "Later confutation of the theory of spontaneous generation. Spallanzani's conclusions were similar to those expressed by Pasteur nearly a century later ..."         Wall map of the world - Clouet, Mondhare, 1785.

History of the Revolution of South-Carolina

, 1785. 1785. RAMSAY, DAVID. The History of the Revolution of South-Carolina, from a British Province to an Independent State. Trenton: Isaac Collins, 1785. 2 vols. xx, 453 p.; xx, 574 p.). 5 folding maps. Contemporary calf, rebacked retaining original spine labels. Large map neatly backed, dampstaining in both volumes. A good-plus copy. First edition of one of the classic accounts of the Revolutionary War in the South, written by a participant who was also a fine historian. Ramsay conceived the idea of writing the book while a British prisoner in Saint Augustine, Florida, in 1780 and 1781. Once the book was completed, it was almost certainly Ramsay's father- in-law, John Witherspoon, who suggested that it be printed by Isaac Collins in Trenton. Most copies were bound by Robert Aitken in Philadelphia. The five maps were engraved by Thomas Abernethie in Charleston. In an effort to reach the widest possible market, Ramsay had copies sent to London publisher Charles Dilly. However, Dilly was concerned that Ramsay had been pointedly critical of several army officers who still enjoyed the esteem of the British public and that to advertise the book for sale would expose him to attacks by the crown lawyers and perhaps to personal violence. He sold only a few copies, and the book was, in effect, banned in England. Poet Philip Freneau responded with a poem, "On prohibiting the sale of Dr. David Ramsay's history of the revolution of South-Carolina, in London." In April 1789 Ramsay petitioned Congress to have his work protected by a federal copyright, and it became the first book so protected when the first copyright act was passed by Congress in May 1790. For a detailed essay on the printing, publishing, and distribution of the book, see Felcone, Printing in New Jersey, 1754-1800: A Descriptive Bibliography, 418. Evans 19211; Wheat & Brun 545, 593-597; Streeter Sale 1135; Howes R36; ESTC 20465.

Sánchez Valverde was the first writer born in Santo Domingo to publish a book. In fact he published several, but all agree his most important is his Idea del valor de la isla Española. In it he writes of the entire island of Hispaniola, both the Spanish portion and the French. He surveys the natural history, the crops, the people, the slaves, the climate, the topography, the hydrology, the ports, and the prospects. Provenance: Ownership stamp of John Carter Brown on title-page; later in the John Carter Brown Library (bookplate); note at end "Collated with G.G. Church copy. July 31, 1912. dup." Deaccessioned 2008. Evidence of readership: Scattered marginalia in French through p. 50, almost invariably giving the French for obscure words and phrases in Spanish in the text. Perhaps owned by someone living in the Haitian area of the island?
