Al Signor Carlo Morris Cavaliere Inglese (Veduta in Prospettiva dell' altro)

Rome 1785 - John Wilton-Ely plate 996The watermark that appears is number 12 in John Wilton-Ely on page 1155 and is dated between the 1780s and 1790'sThis plate is the from the series "Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne. . .)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giov

Dictionary of the English Language

      J. F. and C. Rivington, L. Davis, T. Payne and Son, et al., London 1785 - Sixth edition, and the first authorized quarto edition, of Samuel Johnson's extraordinary dictionary, published one year after his death. In 1746, a group of London booksellers approached Johnson with a proposal for an English dictionary. While the forty scholars of the Académie Française had taken forty years to produce a standard French dictionary, Johnson announced his intention to finish a comparable English work in three years: "forty times forty is sixteen hundred. As three is to sixteen hundred, so is the proportion of an Englishman to a Frenchman" (Boswell). In fact, it took Johnson nine exhausting years, working without help from his nominal patron Lord Chesterfield, to compile his massive dictionary, a vivid interpretive account of the English language. In his definitions, Johnson quotes thousands of examples from English writers, giving his dictionary a lasting literary interest that surpasses its utility as a reference work: as he explains in the preface, he set out to extract "from philosophers principles of science; from historians, remarkable facts; from chymists complete processes; from divines striking exhortations; and from poets beautiful descriptions." This was the standard English dictionary for more than a century, consulted by the Romantics and the Victorians; it is Johnson's Dictionary that Becky Sharp tosses out of the carriage in Vanity Fair. A handsome early edition of a landmark of English literature and lexicography. Two quarto volumes, modern three-quarter speckled calf gilt, red and green spine labels, marbled boards. Half-title and frontispiece portrait of Samuel Johnson in Volume I. In Volume II, the section ROU-RYE transposed with WRE-ZOO, text complete. Traces of dampstaining to top margin of a few pages in Volume I, occasional light foxing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In all, good externally, text near fine, now tight in the bindings. >>>Bailly, a French orator, poet, playwright and astronomer, was one of the early leaders of the French Revolution, but like so many, was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. "Born in Paris, he was originally intended for the profession of a painter, but preferred writing tragedies, until attracted to science by the influence of Nicolas de Lacaille. He calculated an orbit for Halley's Comet when it appeared in 1759, reduced Lacaille's observations of 515 zodiacal stars, and was elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1763. His Essai sur la theorie des satellites de Jupiter (Essay on the theory of the satellites of Jupiter, 1766), an expansion of a memoir presented to the Academy in 1763, showed much original power; and it was followed up in 1771 by a noteworthy dissertation Sur les inegalites de la lumiere des satellites de Jupiter (On the inequalities of light of the satellites of Jupiter). Meantime, he had gained a high literary reputation by his Éloges of King Charles V of France, Lacaille, Molière, Pierre Corneille and Gottfried Leibniz, which were issued in collected form in 1770 and 1790; he was admitted to the Académie française on 26 February 1784, and to the Académie des Inscriptions in 1785, when Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle's simultaneous membership of all three Academies was renewed in him. From then on, he devoted himself to the history of science, publishing successively: Histoire de l'astronomie ancienne (A history of ancient astronomy, 1775); Histoire de l'astronomie moderne (A history of modern astronomy, 3 vols., 1779-1782); Lettres sur l'origine des sciences (Letters on the origin of the sciences, 1777); Lettres sur l' Atlantide de Platon (Letters on Plato's Atlantide , 1779); and Traite de l'astronomie indienne et orientale (A treatise on Indian and Oriental astronomy, 1787). The 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica remarks that ‘Their erudition was marred by speculative extravagances.’ The Revolution interrupted his studies. Elected deputy from Paris to the Estates-General, he was elected president of the Third Estate (5 May 1789), led the famous proceedings in the Tennis Court (20 June), and - immediately after the storming of the Bastille - became the first mayor of Paris under the newly adopted system of the Commune (15 July, 1789 to 16 November 1791). One of his actions in this position was to secure, with others, and in the face of threats and ridicule, the passage of a decree of Sept. 27, 1791 (confirmed Nov. 30 of the same year), which declared Jews to be French citizens, with all rights and privileges. This decree repealed the special taxes that had been imposed on the Jews, as well as all the ordinances existing against them. The dispersal by the National Guard, under his orders, of the riotous assembly in the Champ de Mars (17 July 1791) made him unpopular, and he retired to Nantes, where he composed his Mémoires d'un témoin (published in 3 vols. by MM. Berville and Barrière, 1821-1822), an incomplete narrative of the extraordinary events of his public life. Late [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Many editions appeared in this country, and versions were published in Holland, France, and Germany. They also reveal the vast number of new plants that were introduced in our gardens during that period". (Henrey II, p. 215). Le Mariage de Figaro, Beaumarchais’ masterpiece, influenced French literature by reviving the "comedy of intrigue," which had declined since Molière. "In 1784, the year of its first performance, it was repeated sixty–six times. "Public interest was whetted by its satirical references to the aristocracy, and it was this that first won it fame. Although greeted with enthusiasm by French society, it in fact contributed largely to its destruction. It is, however, the music of Mozart which has immortalized it as the perfect type of comedy."

- Schweizer Postkonto vorhanden. **

Vienna 1785 - Two engraved playing cards, with original hand-colour, with engraved place names in French in the lower part of the card. Dimensions: 115 by 65mm. The card features a miniature map to its upper part with a key in French below with references to counties and towns. In this card the suitmarks have been replaced by coloured squares and a number followed by a small square follows each title. According to Sylvia Mann and David Kingsley, following comparison with other sets, this number appears to be a measurement of the area of the region depicted, "possibly in German miles".         (Mort Tragique du Capitaine Cook, le Janvier 1779)

[Paris]: [chez Isabey], circa, 1785. Engraving, 300 x 220 mm (image size), early proof plate without caption, mounted; fine. Early proof of the French version. A fine early proof copy of the French version of Webber's famous image, before the caption has been added. The general tone is light; in later forms the print will appear darker. This version is quite striking. The official account of Cook's third voyage did not include an image of his death, although some copies did include an added 'Mort de Cook' plate. Nonetheless, as in England, there was tremendous interest in Webber's scene, and this accomplished engraving was issued by Claude-Mathieu Fessard, a prominent French engraver and book artist. This interim proof does not have any imprint details, but Joppien & Smith confirm that the finished print was sold by Isabey, in the rue de Ge?vre, Paris. The final print, as published, would include a brief biography of Cook and description of his death engraved below the image as a caption (the print itself was dedicated to Bougainville). A copy of the finished engraving is in the Nan Kivell Collection at the National Library of Australia (NK6565). Beddie knew two copies, in the Mitchell and Dixson collections of the State Library of New South Wales. D.P. Dodd, John Webber and George Carter all produced successful graphic versions, but it is those by John Webber (the official artist on the voyage) and George Carter which became the most familiar and enduring.

Mort Tragique du Capitaine Cook, le Janvier 1779

[Paris]: [chez Isabey]., n.d. but circa, 1785. Engraving, 300 x 220 m (image size), "Fessard" and "Webber" present as faint scratch signatures only; some browning, but fine and mounted, evidently disbound at some point, with fragments of old thick paper bordering the edges on the reverse. Proof before caption. A further near-final proof of the French version before the complete caption has been added and with names in scratch proof form only. A Description of the Library at Merly in the County of Dorset. Description de la Bibliothèque de Merly dans le Comté de Dorset

Title with large engraved allegorical vignette & 25 engraved plates (seven are double-page, many folding). Parallel texts in English & French. 2 p.l., 14 pp. Large folio, cont. marbled boards (rebacked & recornered, some foxing), orig. red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Printed for the Author by John Nichols, 1785. First illustrated edition. This privately printed and remarkable work is a splendid record of probably the most magnificent private library building constructed in England in the 18th century. Ralph Willet (1719-95), after inheriting the family's West Indian estates, devoted his life to scholarship, botany, and the collecting of books and pictures. He formed a very rich library, strong in incunabula, travel, botany, topography, and architecture. To properly house these books, Willet constructed a library room for his house at Merly. "Few collectors can have given more thought to the creation of a fitting casket for their treasures...The room was 84 feet long 23 feet wide, and 23 feet high, of which 5 feet, six inches were coving. The bookcases, 13 feet 4 inches high, were of carved mahogany, enriched with a complete Ionic order. The top of each bookcase was flanked with busts, and in the centre was an ornamental scroll inscribed with the subject contained in that case, crowned by the lamp of science with the motto 'Non Extinguatur'... "But it was the plasterwork of cove and ceiling which made this unique among Georgian libraries. Thought up by Willet and executed by a 'Mr. Collins', the theme was nothing less than the origin and progress of civilization... "This masterpiece of Georgian architecture, in which Willet and Collins were assisted by Banks and 'Athenian' Stuart...existed for little more than 40 years, for the library wing was pulled down by Willett's nephew, a few years after the books were sold in 1813."-Alan G. Thomas, "Ralph Willet of Merly" in The Book Collector (1963), pp. 439-448 (see the article for a very detailed description of the library's decorations). An unillustrated edition appeared, limited to 200 copies, in 1776. Very good copy. Contemporary bookplate with interlocking monogram "N.C." (?) below the coronet of an English Marquess. .

Tott s work is the first extensive description of the Crimean Tatars. - In the appendix (printed here as part 5 and to our knowledge unrecorded by the bibliographers, including Chatzipanagioti-Sangmeister 1127) his views of the Turks are being critizised by Peyssonnel, who considered the Ottoman Empire an important ally of the French. - Nice copy, minor browning, first title with a small marginal tear, a little rubbed. Philadelphia: Printed for the Author, 1785. First American edition of the most substantial agricultural text yet published in the United States; it was published during Varlo's unsuccessful sojourn in America (see below). Varlo (ca. 1725-ca. 1795), was an agriculturist and inventor of a number of agricultural machines. The present book was first published in York in 1770. "In 1784, while he was living in Sloane Square, in London, Varlo became involved in a somewhat ludicrous episode. He had bought papers and charters supposedly granted by Charles I to Sir Edward Plowden, entitling him to colonize New Albion (later New Jersey) in America. This attempt at colonization had failed and in Charles II's reign the charter was superseded by a new grant to the duke of York. Armed with his papers (which were probably forgeries), Varlo went out to the American colonies in 1784 hoping to be recognized as governor of the province of New Jersey and to take over one-third of the territory. The case was tried before the colonial courts, but Varlo's claim was dismissed...Before returning to England he travelled for a year through New England, Maryland, and Virginia (where he met George Washington)."-ODNB. The present American edition has been significantly revised. The preliminary leaves in the first volume vary from copy to copy: this has six preliminary leaves of subscribers, four for Philadelphia and two for Boston and other parts of New England. Some browning but a nice set. ❧ Evans 19338. Rink, Technical America, 1100. Sabin 98636. .

A View of part of the Fort of Lutteefpoor

      J. Wells, London 1785 - Aquatint, printed in two or more colours, coloured by hand to resemble watercolour, by Hodges. A fine print from the very rare hand-coloured issue of Hodges' "Select Views in India", the pioneering work on the architectural and picturesque wonders of India. This fine image resulted from Hodges' six year stay in India under the patronage of Warren Hastings and was published in three separate forms: uncoloured, uncoloured proof or hand-coloured to resemble the original drawing, as here. The image was were printed lightly in a single operation using two (sepia and blue) or more colours applied to a single plate, these prints were then coloured by hand (probably by Hodges himself) with great freedom but with careful attention being paid to achieving a depth of colour and shading only possible through the repeated over-painting of contrasting pigments. The print therefore retains much of the idiosyncratic vibrancy of the original watercolour. Born in London the son of a smith, William Hodges was employed as an errand-boy in Shipley's drawing school, where in his spare time he managed to learn drawing. The landscape painter Richard Wilson (1714-1782) noticed him and took him on as his assistant and pupil, and by 1766 Hodges was exhibiting in his own right. In 1772, through the interest of Lord Palmerston (1739-1802) a member of the board of Admiralty, he was appointed as draughtsman to Captain James Cook's second expedition to the South Seas. He returned in 1775 and was employed by the Admiralty in working up his drawings of the expedition and in supervising the engraving of the plates for Cook's published account of the expedition. He exhibited a number of pictures inspired by the voyage at the Royal Academy in London in 1776 and 1777. Life in London must have seemed quite restrained after his South Sea Island experiences, and in 1778 he left for India, where he worked under the patronage of the Governor-General Warren Hastings (1732-1818) and remained in India for about six years, experiencing at first hand one of the most important periods in the establishment of British supremacy in India. On his return to England in 1784 he set about the publication of 'Select Views in India.' Its appearance would have caused a sensation , as nothing of the scenery of India on this scale had been seen before (Humboldt cited the Hodges views as one of the inducements which led him to travel). Hodges thereafter continued to paint and to exhibit at the Royal Academy, but did not manage to achieve the heights that he reached with his Indian views. Cf. Abbey Travel II, 416; cf. Brunet III, 242; cf. Lowndes II, p.1079; cf. Tooley 264. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
