The Whole Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who Lived Eight and Twenty Years All Lone in an Uninhabited Island, on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque

London: Printed at the Logographic Press, and Sold By J. Walter, 1785. Two volumes. [4], 485, [1]. [4], 452pp. Complete with engraved frontispiece to each volume, with tissue guard to volume II. Handsomely bound in contemporary speckled tan calf, gilt, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces. Slightly rubbed, with a little chipping at head and feet, spines somewhat discoloured, the surfaces of which slightly cracked. Small chip to lower joint of Vol I. Small paper flaw to D8, vol II, touching text but without loss of sense. Very occasional pencilled notes to text. First published in 1719, Defoe's Robinson Crusoe is the cornerstone work in the canon of castaway literature. Its enduring popularity ensured that it was published throughout the eighteenth-century, however this edition of 1785 is a novelty inasmuch as it is the first edition to be printed on John Walker's innovative 'logographic' press. A variation on existing letterpress typography, this method of printing collected the previously separately set letters of each word in a printed text into 'logotypes', thus reducing the duration of typesetting and the frequency of errors. Most famously, Walker's Logographic Press also printed the Daily Universal Register, which was to be renamed as The Times in 1789 and become under his son's editorship the most influential newspaper of the nineteenth-century. ESTC records two variant titles of this 1785 edition, this present set is the scarcer - with only 4 copies located (Oxford, St. Deniol's, McMaster and Newbery). ESTC T180363.. First Logographic Press Edition. 8vo.

PILON, FREDERICK (1750?-1788), actor and dramatist, was born in Cork in 1750. After receiving a fairly good education in his native city, he was sent to Edinburgh University to study medicine, but he took to the stage instead. He first appeared at the Edinburgh Theatre as Oroonoko, but with small success, and consequently joined an inferior strolling company, with which he remained for some years. He finally drifted to London, where Griffin the bookseller employed him on the ?'Morning Post.?' After Griffin's death had deprived him of this position, he seems to have worked as an obscure literary hack until he began to write for the stage. He was soon employed with some regularity at Covent Garden Theatre. There, on 4 Nov. 1778, ?'The Invasion, or a Trip to Brighthelmstone?'—?'a moderate farce,?' according to Genest—was performed, with Lee Lewis in the chief part (Cameleon) on 4 Nov. 1778. It was repeated twenty-four times during the season, and was several times revived. ?'The Liverpool Prize?' followed at the same theatre on 22 Feb. 1779, with Quick in the chief part. ?'Illumination, or the Glazier's Conspiracy,?' a prelude, suggested by the illuminations on Admiral Keppel's acquittal, was acted on 12 April 1779 for Lee Lewis's benefit. ?'The Device, or the Deaf Doctor,?' when first produced on 27 Sept. 1779, met with great opposition, but, revived with alteration as ?'The Deaf Lover,?' on 2 Feb. 1780, it achieved some success; ?'The Siege of Gibraltar,?' a musical farce (25 April 1780), celebrated Rodney's victory; ?'The Humours of an Election,?' a farce (19 Oct. 1780), satirised electoral corruption; ?'Thelyphthora, or more Wives than One,?' a farce, satirising the work of the name by Martin Madan [q. v.], was produced on 8 March 1781, and was damned the second night; ?'Aerostation, or the Templar's Stratagem?' (29 Oct. 1784), dealt with the rage of the day for balloons; ?'Barataria, or Sancho turned Governor?' (29 March 1785), was adapted from D'Urfey. Meanwhile Pilon deserted Covent Garden for Drury Lane, where he produced, on 18 May 1782, ?'The Fair American,?' a comic opera, which was not very skilfully plagiarised from the ?'Adventures of Five Hours.?' Pilon's last piece, a comedy, ?'He would be a Soldier,?' after being rejected by Colman, was performed at Covent Garden on 18 Nov. 1786, and achieved considerable success. In 1787 Pilon married a Miss Drury of Kingston, Surrey; he died at Lambeth on 17 Jan. 1788. His pieces were clever, if of ephemeral interest. Besides the plays mentioned, all of which he published, Pilon issued ?'The Drama,?' an anonymous poem, 1775, and ?'An Essay on the Character of Hamlet as performed by Mr. Henderson?' (anonymous), 8vo, London, 1785 ? An edition of G. A. Stevens's ?'Essay on Heads?' appeared in 1785, with additions by Pilon. (DNB - Dictionary of National Biography - Article by David James O'Donoghue) __________________________________________ John O'Keeffe (June 24, 1747 ?- February 4, 1833) was an Irish actor and dramatist. He wrote a number of farces and amusing dramatic pieces, many of which had great success. Among these are Tony Lumpkin in Town (1778), Wild Oats (1791), Love in a Camp, and Omai (1785), an account of the voyages of the Tahitian explorer Omai. O'Keeffe was born in Dublin in 1747 to Roman Catholic parents and was educated by the Jesuits. After showing a talent for drawing he studied art at an Academy in Dublin, but grew increasingly more interested in the theatre. After a two-year trip to London, where he became an admirer of David Garrick, he settled on a career as an actor and playwright. O'Keeffe wrote his first play The She Gallant when he was twenty, and it was performed in Dublin at the Smock Alley Theatre. In 1774 O'Keeffe was married to Mary Heaphy. In 1777 O'Keefe moved to London. The following year he wrote Tony Lumpkin in Town a sequel to Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer and sent it to the manager of the Haymarket Theatre. The play was successfully produced, and O'Keefe regularly wrote for the Haymarket thereafter. Between 1782 and 1796 O'Keefe wrote around 28 plays and comic operas. The Poor Soldier (1783), a comic opera with words and lyrics by O'Keeffe and music by William Shield, was a musical farce about the lives of British soldiers returning home after the American War of Independence. O'Keeffe also wrote The Son-in-Law, Agreeable Surprise which includes the lyrical poem Amo, Amas, and Castle of Andalusia. O'Keefe had problems with his eyes ever since he had fallen into the River Liffey in his youth. From the mid-1770s O'Keefe increasingly lost his sight, and from 1781 his plays had to be dictated by him. In spite of this he was a prolific writer and was the most produced playwright in London in the last quarter of the 18th century. Some of his songs set to music by Arnold and Shield, such as I am a Friar of Orders Grey, and The Thorn, are still popular. In 1800 a benefit performance was staged for him at Covent Garden. In 1826 O'Keefe wrote his memoirs which covered his life experiences and various interactions with the leading artistic figures of his day. The memoirs were dictated to his daughter Adelaide O'Keefe (1776-1865) who oversaw their publication. The same year he was awarded a pension by George IV. He died in 1833 in Southampton and was buried there. In the 19th century the essayist William Hazlitt described O'Keeffe as the "English Molière" observing "in light, careless laughter and pleasant exaggeration of the humorous, we have no equal to him". His Wild Oats has been revived in 1976, 1995 and 2012, by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre and the Bristol Old Vic respectively. (Wikipedia) ______________________________________________ August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue (3 May [O.S. 22 April] 1761 - 23 March [O.S. 11 March] 1819) was a German dramatist and writer who also worked as a consul in Russia and Germany. One of Kotzebue's books was burned during the Wartburg festival in 1817. He was murdered in 1819 by Karl Ludwig Sand, a militant member of the Burschenschaften. This murder gave Metternich the pretext to issue the Carlsbad Decrees of 1819, which dissolved the Burschenschaften, cracked down on the liberal press, and seriously restricted academic freedom in the states of the German Confederation.         R.P. Natalis Alexandri ... Historia ecclesiastica Veteris Novique Testamenti ab orbe condito ad annum post Christum natum millesimum sexcentesimum: et in loca ejusdem insignia dissertationes historicae, chronologicae, criticae, dogmaticae... [with]... Supplementum. [Twenty Volumes]

Bingii ad Rhenum: G. C. Voigt, 1785-1791. First quarto edition. Editio omnium novissima, notis et animadversionibus, quoad historiam et dissertationem [sic] Novi Testamenti, aucta ad castigationem et illustrationem opinionum quorumdam [sic] auctoris, opera et studio Constantini Roncaglia ... Quibus accedunt, praeter animadversiones a P. Joanne Dominico Mansi ... in 2. Lucensi editione inserta [sic], aliae insuper ejusdem auctoris noviter elucubratae. Spines and boards rubbed and scuffed, worn at extremities, heads and heels of a few volumes chipped, calf occasionally darkened or brittle mainly on spines, library call numbers to lower compartments, seminary book plate to front pastedowns, occasional bookseller's ticket, bindings tight, some scattered foxing otherwise leaves clean and unmarked. A valuable set. Sm. 4to.(25 cm). Illus. Noel Alexandre, or Alexander Natalis (1639-1724), was a French historian and theologian, of the Order of St. Dominic who studied philosophy and theology in the convent of Saint Jacques, Paris, where he taught for twelve years, obtained the licentiate from the Sorbonne, and in 1675, the doctorate, and was urged to write a complete history of the church, the first volume appearing in 1677. ?His directness and conciseness, his critical acumen, and his manner of viewing history and dividing it into special studies (then quite original, although now common enough) won for him the approbation of the learned. The first volumes of the history brought him letters of commendation and praise from Pope Innocent XI and many cardinals, but later volumes gave offense at Rome because of the author's Gallicism, and Innocent XI finally forbade the faithful to read ...it," Cath.Ency. Alexandre corrected the work in the third edition. Constantino Roncaglia brought out a sixth edition, unaltered, but with the addition of paragraphs and dissertations correcting the most offensive statements. The work was thus removed from the Index by Pope Benedict XIII. The edition offered here is the best and most complete, edited by Giovan Domenico Mansi who added many explanatory notes. An anonymous writer in two supplementary volumes (also included here) carried the history into the eighteenth century, and added various dissertations from other historians. The work thus completed appeared at Venice in 1778, in eleven folio volumes, and at Bingen, 1785-91, in twenty volumes. Brunet I, 169.

        EZO NO KUNI ZENZU

1785. [MAP - JAPAN] HAYASHI Shihei. EZO NO KUNI ZENZU. This is a "shazu" or handcopied version of the original printed map which was published in Edo, by Suharaya Shihei, in Temmei 5 [1785]. Colored map of Hokkaido, 50 x 92 cm, folds into 17.8 x 12 cm covers with title label. Our copy resembles the 1825 reprint at http://angel.library.ubc.ca/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/tokugawa&CI SOPTR=78&REC=4 from the Beans collection at the UBC library. As we said, though, ours is a copy of the separate publication from 1785 [the Beans 1785.9, p.25]. The printed original is a great rarity and other hand- copied versions like this one, probably done in the mid-19th century, are certainly known. In very nice condition. A handsome and interesting map of this frontier region of Japan. From the collection of Roger Keyes.

(1) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

NEVER The TWAIN SHALL MEET. [NIGRANIA - Binding title]

      (n. p.):. (n. d.).. 8-7/8" x 6-1/2". Ca. late 1950s. [2], 204 ll, typed recto only. Hand inked corrections throughout. Text divided into 10 chapters.. Bound in brown half-cloth with marbled boards. Gold embossed title label to front board.. General shelf wear to binding. A VG copy of what-appears-to-be a. unique item.. The work begins: "The Government of Nigrania, it must be emphasised [sic] at the very outset, is enlightened. There can be no doubt about it. Every article in the Nigranian Herald (which is controlled by the Minister of Propaganda) makes this quite clear, and so does a little weekly paper, published in England, which is devoted to the affairs of the country. Neither can it be said that either of these is biased, because the first is edited and published by an American negro from South Carolina and the second is written, almost in its entirety, by an English woman of well- known moral scruples. Were she and her scruples less well known it is possible that the malicious and ill-informed might suspect that her views were, shall we say, tainted, by reason of the stipend she receives from the King of Nigrania, but there can be no doubt of that. Like Caesar's wife, she is above suspicion." One can't help but wonder if the name selected for the title comes from the 1785 Utopian work, GOLDEN AGE, "This you may call Nigrania: It being allotted for the Negroes to dwell there..." As in the style of 18th C. anonymous English writers, the simple substitution of "Nigrania" for Ethiopia and "Florenuova" for Addis Ababa, provides an anonymous individual, presumably English, who had obviously been long-time resident in the country, the cover for this satiric view of the African nation as seen during the post-war Haile Selassie era. The overall tone is one of white superiority & colonial condescension towards "ungrateful" natives, but, at the same time, the work is knowledgeable & informative, full of anecdotes which would have been known only to an intimate... a British Army officer perhaps or expatriate business executive. For a scholar of Ethiopian history, there is a wealth of specific detail & references within the text, which cynically discusses Ethiopian Government, social character, the Army and other military services, education, sport & natural resources, that could help to specifically date the period about which the author is writing; the date estimate offered is based on the author's present-tense reference to an "English woman of well-known moral scruples", who is, no doubt, Sylvia Pankhurst, the celebrated British suffragette who edited an English- language newspaper, "The New Times and Ethiopia News." She moved to Addis Ababa in 1956 and died there in September 1960. An laid-in note, dated 19/9/63 & written in blue ball-point on a lined leaf [4-7/8" x 3"] torn from a loose-leaf note-pad, gives the only clue as to the author; it states: "John - / A wonderfully / perceptive book. / We've relished it / hugely; we hope / that your point of / view will boost / our morale this / coming turn when / things go - Ethiopian. / B & B". An apparently unpublished, custom-bound typescript documenting the [then] current regime of an African country, by an unidentified author who, the work strongly implies, lived in-country during the milieu chronicled.

        ESQUISSES D'ARCHITECTURE ].

c.1785. - Volume in-folio. 77ff.

[Paris] Renouard n.d. [1785] - This copy with the engraved bookplate of Percy Hamilton Clark, perhaps the most famous American cricketer of all time, who in 1903 ushered in what has been called the "Golden Age" of cricket in the U.S.A. 167 engraved plates, 154 of which are numbered and 13 unnumbered, by Moreau the Younger, Monnet and Lepicier depicting the history of France and including frameworks for descriptive text of Monsieur l'Abbe' Garnier. Large 8vo, (29 by 20.5 cm), in handsome antique three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards, the spine ornately gilt lettered and decorated. 167 leaves, printed on one side only. A very pleasing copy, internally very fine and fresh, the binding with some light, expected evidence of age. A VERY BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED WORK. This impressive suite of engravings depict the history of France from the inauguration of Pharamond (circa 428) to the year 1314. Moreau had intended to carry on with the engraving work and bring the book up to his own time, but the project was unfortunately never completed. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Natursystem aller bekannten in- und ausländischen Insecten, als eine Fortzetsung der von Büffonschen Naturgeschichte. Nach dem System des Ritters Carl von Linné bearbeitet: KÄFER.

Berlin, J. Pauli, 1785-1806. 5 text-vols (of 10). 8vo (195 x 120mm) and 3 atlas volumes. Oblong-4to (265 x 210mm). With 1 engraved handcoloured frontispiece and 5 handcoloured title-vignettes and 202 plates, of which 201 beautifully coloured. Contemporary half calf, gilt lettered spines. A very fine copy of one of the most attractive early works on coleoptera, lacking the last 5 text volumes. First and only edition of this superbly illustrated work on exotic and European coleoptera. Carl Gustav Jablonsky was private secretary to the Queen of Prussia. After Jablonsky's untimely death Herbst edited the work from volume 2 on. A great number of the plates were drawn by Jablonsky. The work should be considered a first attempt to a total survey of the coleoptera. A sequel was published to the above work dealing with butterflies. "The Frenchmen were however preceded in their illustrated compilation of the Cook voyage entomology by Johann Herbst in Berlin, whose illustrated monographs on beetles (Natursystem der Käfer) were published between 1783 and 1795. Although he may have visited London, it is more likely that Herbst saw duplicates given to Fabricius by Banks and taken by the former to Kiel, which is relatively more accessible from Berlin. His illustrations of New Zealand insects are the earliest published" (Andrews, The Southern Ark p. 45). Andrews quotes the wrong dates of publication. All plates have brilliant colouring. One atlas volume has small repair at ends of spine and the paper of the boards of the atlas volumes has been replaced.//Provenance: Bookplate of Reinold Charpentier.//Nissen ZBI, 2078; Junk, Rara I, 10.
