A Journey into Siberia, made by Order of the King of France.

London: for T. Jefferys,, 1770. Containing an Account of the Manners and Customs of the Russians, the Present State of their Empire; with the Natural History, and Geographical Description of their Country, and Level of the Road from Paris to Tobolsky. Translated from the French, with a Preface by the Translator. Quarto (264 x 196 mm). 20th-century half calf, raised bands to spine, black morocco label, marbled sides. Folding map frontispiece, 9 engraved plates of which one folding. Light browning, occasional mild spotting or soiling, chiefly to margins, very slightly stronger on leaves facing plates, folding map with a stipple of trivial spill-burns along the bottom edge, and shallow chipping along fore edge affecting the border only, pale marginal tide-marks to plates facing pp. xii, 109 and 111, plate to face p. 106 bound to page p. 108. A very good copy. First edition in English, from the library of the great industrialist Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), with his Etruria shelfmark label mounted to the folding map verso and another relaid to the front pastedown, and sometime owned by an early subscription library in Bolton, Lancashire, where it circulated among several leading figures of the Industrial Revolution. The second blank verso is inscribed in a contemporary hand with a list of borrowers, dates, and the stipulation "to be kept 10 days". The first name, listed on 19 February, the year unspecified, is Dorning Rasbotham (1730-1791), a Manchester-born antiquary and playwright who lived at Farnworth. It was later borrowed by a Mr Pilkington on 21 April, and on the 29th by a Mr S. Crompton: this is very likely Bolton merchant-manufacturer John Pilkington, and Samuel Crompton (1753-1827), inventor of the spinning mule, a machine which revolutionised cotton manufacturing. In 1781 Pilkington offered Crompton to demonstrate his machine before the Manchester Council of Manufacturers, and some years later, in 1812, supported his bid for financial assistance from the Chancellor of the Exchequer. On 21 July the book was taken out by Roger Dewhurst (d. 1806), businessman and owner of Bolton's Halliwell Hall. The last borrower is another Crompton, John, on 3 August. Rasbotham and Wedgwood, who were exact contemporaries, may have met through their membership of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society. Wedgwood had an extensive library mainly comprising works on neoclassical design. It does not appear to have been dispersed in his lifetime, but Wedgwood may have been encouraged to donate a few items to a friendly of society of fellow industrialists by his wife: he is recorded as having told his partner Thomas Bentley that "My Sally says I must buy no more books until I build her a new house & suggests I read some of those I have already - what nonsense she talks sometimes" (Wedgwood Museum, online). Chappé d'Auteroche (1722/8-69) was a French astronomer. "In 1761, by the order of the king of France, and by arrangement with Catherine II, he undertook an expedition into Siberia to observe the transit of Venus. From Paris he reached St Petersburg, then sledged to Tobolsk, where in 1761 the transit was duly observed. The expedition carried out a large number of scientific measurements en route, and reported on the geography of the region and the customs of the inhabitants" (Howgego). His account provides "a mass of detail" (Nerhood) on Russian mercantile exports, mining (iron ore, copper, and gold), and flora and fauna, as well as meteorological observations. It is also noted "for its forthright and sometimes provocative descriptions of Russian manners and characters" (Hill), which provoked a rebuttal, The Antidote, written "By a Lover of Truth" and sometimes attributed to Catherine the Great.

        CARDS OF ANTIENT HISTORY.

Two set of cards, each containing 52 cards. The first set lacks the title card [51 of 52], but covers the period from the First Epoch. Adam, or the Creation. Year of the World 1. 4004 Before Christ, ending at the VIth Lunar Eclipse, 502 B.C. The second set of cards is titled: CARDS OF ANTIENT HISTORY, from the Battle of Marathon, to the Birth of Jesus Christ; including the History of 500 years. By John Ryland, A.M. Master of a Boarding School at Northampton. Published. Oct' 1st 1770. Printed for Carrington Bowles, Map & Printseller, No 69 in St. Paul's Church Yard, London. Each card measures 9.3 x 6.3 cm. The cards were issued in two sets, as stated on card 51 of the set, is the notification: 'NB. AA second set of Cards, containing the remaining principal Facts down to the Birth of Christ, will soon be published.' Both sets are in excellent condition. A rare 18th century teaching aid, that tackles the task of marrying recorded history with Biblical mythology and dogma. So far as we can ascertain, it is unrecorded. We cannot be certain which John Ryland was the author of these cards, as both John Collett Ryland (1723-1792), and his son (1753 to 1825) were schoolmasters and authors of works concerned with religion and education.

Rare first edition second issue, either with the corrected mistakes, and therefore without the errata sheets. This edition is described by Tchemerzine. Full brown calf marbled time. A little lack of Volume I. head head cover of Volume II threadbare. Split bits in head and tail tome II. A dull corner in Volume II. Speckles on the title page of Volume I. Traces of dry old foxing, and sometimes humidity (low margin area) in two volumes, with no gravity. Good general appearance. The most famous work of the author (who is finally assigned to his death), bible materialism, and certainly one of the most iconic works of the Enlightenment. Ideas of Baron d'Holbach are not new, and draws its material cheerfully Hobbes, La Mettrie, Diderot and Helvetius, but he built a new conceptual: to become free, man must overcome prejudices and based on empiricism and materialism, ie the same nature, and therefore reject any religious thought. It is this open and assertive atheism and anti-clericalism which earned the publication of the book the sentence be slashed and burned demonstration. We now know that Diderot was associated with the project and wrote the last chapter of the abstract code of nature. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. It is also the largest novel in the English language. Richardson's epistolary novels brought him great fame as an author.         Copy of a letter to J. Ellis, Esq., of Gray's-inn, from Dr. Solander... [in] The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politicks, and Literature for the Year 1769.

London: Printed for J. Dodsley, 1770. Two volumes in one, octavo; contemporary ms. ownership and shelf marks on front pastedown; an excellent copy in contemporary calf. A little-known text relating to Cook's first voyage, in fact one of the first accounts of the voyage to be printed: a letter from Solander to John Ellis written from Rio de Janeiro, dated 1 December 1768, and here published in the 1769 volume of the Annual Register. Solander writes of his and Joseph Banks's frustration at being refused permission by the viceroy to go ashore to study the abundant plant life but how, by 'fair means and foul', they had managed to acquire some 300 specimens, and identify a number of new species. Although only a few pages long, the letter bristles with scientific comment on the flora and fauna they had managed to examine, and simultaneously shows Solander's eagerness for the voyage, commenting on how he has enlisted some of the brighter sailors to help identify and catalogue new species.Solander, who trained with Linnaeus, moved to England in 1759 for what was meant to be a brief visit, but it became his permanent home. He became firm friends with John Ellis, and made substantial contributions to many of his most important works, including the Natural History of Zoophytes. However, it is the patronage of Sir Joseph Banks which was the turning point in Solander's career, and which led to his joining Cook's first voyage. On their return, Solander became Banks' secretary and librarian, a portmanteau position that also meant that he was, in effect, the curator of the natural history collection.Like Banks, Solander was shy of taking credit for his work, and although he worked on some of the most important natural history projects of his generation, very few pieces were actually signed, and have only been attributed to him by later scholarship. Despite his many travels, Solander never returned to Sweden, and died at Soho Square in 1782.

n.p., circa, 1770. Duodecimo, 72 pp., drop-title only, as published with no separate title-page and no colophon; in modern boards, morocco label. A very good copy of this uncommon title by the fiery Comte de Lauraguais, best known for his association with Sir Joseph Banks, and particularly for his abortive attempt to publish a narrative by Banks of the Endeavour voyage. The pamphlet dates from the period just before Lauraguais fled to sanctuary in London, where he would pursue his acquaintance with Banks and ultimately attempt to publish his friend's letter on the Cook voyage.Lauraguais (1733-1824) had published his Mémoire sur la Compagnie des Indes in 1770, and it had been the subject of some strong attacks by figures such as the economist Morellet. Here, the Dupont of the title is actually one of Morellet's closest allies, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours, the French economist whose children established the famous chemical company Dupont in the United States. Dupont was himself the protégé of François Quesnay, and formed part of a group dedicated to economic and cultural reforms. The Compagnie des Indes (or French East India Company) had been disbanded amid great controversy in 1769, and naturally became the subject of strong polemics by many influential French writers, especially after Louis XVI decreed that the properties and assets of the Company should be transferred to the state. Both Dupont and Lauraguais had already published strongly-worded essays on the subject, and as this pamphlet confirms, they didn't see eye-to-eye on the subject. As a result, this pamphlet is a violent attack against Dupont de Nemours: indeed, Lauraguais's outbursts on the Compagnie des Indes at this time were one of the main reasons he went into self-imposed exile in England in 1771.Lauraguais was notoriously quick to print, but despite his rather voluminous output, all of his pamphlets and books are quite scarce. This pamphlet is certainly very rare, and although noted in Barbier's bibliography it is not widely known. Copies are scarce in international collections, although the works collates identically with a copy in the Bibliothèque National de France. Very good.

Paris, Desaint, 1770, in 8°, de XVI-395pp. 1f., 2 tableaux se dépl., pl. veau marbré époque, dos orné. Bel exemplaire. ¶ Sur l'importance de ce traité et dans le développement des idées physiocratiques cf. Rolf Du Rietz comments in the Kroepelien catalogue that the printing is so rare that he has been able to locate only two copies of the work and no reference to it in any bibliography or catalogue. This important work relating to Tahiti takes the form of a letter allegedly written by Aotourou, the Tahitian who returned to Paris with Bougainville. There was much criticism of Bougainville on this point - Diderot particularly upbraided him for having 'torn' the native from his environment - but Autourou was a sensation, and apparently fascinated by the French capital. Bougainville himself paid to kit out a ship when Autourou expressed a wish to return home, but the Tahitian was killed en voyage by an outbreak of small pox.La Dixmerie was personally involved with Aotourou, and helped introduce him to Parisian high society. Despite this personal contact, la Dixmerie remained virulently opposed to the popular notion of the noble savage, just as he sided with Diderot in arguing that it was a violence to have brought Autourou back to France. In this fictional letter, Aotourou satirically compares the mores of Paris society with that of Nouvelle-Cythère.The description of Tahiti is based on the Lettre de Monsieur de Commerson, the naturalist on the voyage, which was first published in 1769. Published the next year, la Dixmerie's imaginative work is, as du Rietz comments, 'one of the earliest books relating to Tahiti.' Not until the 1779 publication of Taitbout's Essai sur l'Isle d'Otahiti would there be any serious separate work on Tahiti. Rather worn and stained but nonetheless attractive.

Published under the late Mirabaud's name to avoid censure. "In the Systeme, Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attempted to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. He derived the moral and intellectual faculties from man's sensibility to impressions made by the external world, and saw human actions as entirely determined by pleasure and pain. He continued his direct attack on religion by attempting to show that it derived entirely from habit and custom. But the Systeme was not a negative or destructive book: Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a more desirable alternative" (PMM 215). 1st Printing. Of describing the common Furniture of Dials; and the Construction of some useful Dials of other kind. William Emerson (14 May 1701 - 20 May 1782), English mathematician, was born at Hurworth, near Darlington, where his father, Dudley Emerson, also a mathematician, taught a school. Unsuccessful as a teacher, he devoted himself entirely to studious retirement, and published many works which are singularly free from errata. In mechanics he never advanced a proposition which he had not previously tested in practice, nor published an invention without first proving its effects by a model. He was skilled in the science of music, the theory of sounds, and the ancient and modern scales; but he never attained any excellence as a performer. He died on 20 May 1782 at his native village.

The Passover Haggadah Containing the Ceremonies and Prayers which are used and read by all families in all houses of the Israelites, the Two first Nights of Passover: Faithfully Translated from the Original Hebrew. To which is added, the Explanations thereon.

London W. Gilbert for Alexander 1770 - Duodecimo in half sheets, (17 x 11 cm). lxxvii pp., frontispiece engraved by Terry, a bit spotted and stained, frontispiece slightly cropped. Contemporary calf spine over marbled boards; upper hinge splitting, rubbed; preserved in a new calf solander box with gilt lettering. The very first printing of the Haggadah in English. Very Rare. "This development is significant not only as a measure of the linguistic acculturation of English Jews by the latter part of the eighteenth century, but also as a break with previous policies. Only five years before, the publication of an English translation of the prayer-book prepared by Isaac Pinto had been thwarted by the conservative leaders of the Sephardic community. In their view only Spanish translations, hollowed the practice of centuries, were to be allowed." (Yerushalmi, Haggadah and History). This first English translation of the Haggadah, being also the first bilingual edition of the Haggadah, was translated by Alexander from Hebrew to English and published by him in 1770. It was issued in two editions - Ashkenazic, in which the hymns 'Adir Hu' and 'Had Gadya' appear in Yiddish at the end of the book, and the present Sephardic edition - without the hymns, but with inscriptions in Ladino (written in Hebrew letters). This Haggadah represents the only known appearance of Ladino in Hebrew letters in a London imprint. Very rare: this edition doesn't seem to be in the British Library nor the Bodleian. Alexander Alexander (Alexander ben Judah Leib) was one of the pioneers of the Hebrew printing in London, active in the 18th-19th centuries. He had established his Hebrew press in London in 1770. This haggadah was the second book published by him, following an earlier bilingual Common Prayer-Book. The frontispiece illustration - 'Moses slaying the Egyptian' has the captions: "And they built for Pharaoh store-cities Pithom and Raameses" in Hebrew at the bottom and "Engraved for the Hebrew Hawgoda" in English at the top. In fact this engraving is a copy of Bar Jacob's illustration for the Amsterdam Haggadah, which itself is a copy of a biblical engraving by Matthaeus Merian dating back to the first half of the 17th century.

Roma Rome 725 475

Duodecimo (167 x 97 mm). Rebound to style in brown full calf, red morocco label, spine gilt in compartments, blind twin rule to boards, edges red. Early ownership signature to title. Tiny hole to top edge of title, repair to short closed tear on sig. C12, intermittent faint dampstaining to bottom margins. A very good copy. First edition of the author's defence of Physiocracy in general and of its position on the grain trade in particular. A prominent Physiocrat who was invited by Catherine II to spread the doctrine to St. Petersburg , Mercier "published what many (for example, Smith, 1776, p. 679; Mill, 1824, p. 712) considered to be the most comprehensive exposition of Physiocratic doctrine in his L'Ordre Naturel et Essentiel des Sociétés Politiques (1767)" (The New Palgrave III, p. 449). The author wrote L'Intérêt général de l'État as a response to the Neapolitan priest Ferdinando Galiani's Dialogues sur le commerce des bléds, which was written as a reaction to the threefold increase of the price of flour in Paris in 1768 and published with the help of Diderot in 1769. Galiani's Dialogues, the "strongest attack" (ibid., p. 871) borne on the Physiocrats, ridiculed the cornerstone of Physiocratic thought: the supposed superiority of agriculture over industry. Le Mercier de la Rivière based his contribution to the dispute over grain trade on a political and juridical appraisal of free trade, ending his argument with a denunciation of Galiani's Dialogues as "l'apologie la plus bouffonne et la plus savante du système mercantile que feront jamais les hommes d'esprit qui n'y croient pas". Galiani retaliated with La Bagarre (1770), which was not to be published but drew considerable attention from Parisian circles, most notably from saloniste Madame d'Epinay. A well-presented copy of a work described as "exceedingly rare" by Henry Higgs.

A REVIEW OF THE MILITARY OPERATIONS IN NORTH-AMERICA; FROM THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE FRENCH HOSTILITIES ON THE FRONTIERS OF VIRGINIA, IN 1753, TO THE SURRENDER OF OSWEGO, ON THE 14TH OF AUGUST, 1756...IN A LETTER TO A NOBLEMAN

New York: Alexander and James Robertson, 1770. 170pp. Modern brown leather. Light scattered foxing, else very good. Lacks the half title. Second American printing of this highly important work, previously printed in New Haven in 1758 and in London and Dublin in 1757. This is among the main authorities on the Lake George Campaign and is aimed largely at the vindication of the actions of Gen. Shirley. It has been suggested that New York historian William Smith may have had a hand in its preparation. "The writer is very severe in his criticisms of the leading political men of [New York], whom he blames for the failures that took place during the whole French war" - JCB. HOWES L401, "b." EVANS 11701. SABIN 91649. JCB III:1762.
