Thomas Marshall
Beautiful manuscript book with normal patina from age 1769 . Tight pages gilt edges . Please view description and photos for more info. A beautiful manuscript, dated 1769, titled Collection d'Hymnes et de Proses Choises. Harkening back to the medieval Book of Hours, these manuscript hymns and poetry are a Christian devotional, with a Latin passage on the verso (left-side), and a French passage on the recto (right). One hundred and three pages are provided in manuscript (title page, and "102" paginated pages). Many of the passages relate to the Fetes de l"Annee, but are not limited to them. You'll find passages for Pentecost, Easter, various Saint's days, etc.. A preponderance of the readings are specific to the period surrounding Jesus' death and resurrection. The beautiful "Dutch-Gilt" pastedowns are very similar to those attributed to Joseph Friederich Leopold of Augsburg (To Brighten Things Up, p.18, Schmoller, 2008). Likely Provenance - Title page reads "A L'usage de M.r le Dauvet." Likely the Marquis d'Auvet, who fought in the 1762 French Campaign in West Germany, under Louis XV. The 1771 Dictionnaire Universel de la France (Desaint) lists him as the Lord of Maineville (p. 71 Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 23.5 x 18 x 1.5 cm.. Olive green Morocco crushed leather, with triple gilt fillets around boards with corner florets. Spine in six compartments framed in gilt fillet; five compartments with central gilt floret and corner leaf sprays, and one compartment with the title in gilt on red Morocco. All edges gilt (AEG). First edition of the prospectus for Morellet's planned but ultimately unrealised Dictionnaire de commerce, issued with his Catalogue, considered "the first bibliography of economic literature" (Carpenter, p. 2). "This prospectus, which is undoubtedly one of the very best specimens of that class of works, was intended to exhibit the principles and plan of a Commercial Dictionary, in the compilation of which Morellet was then actively engaged, which was to extend to five, or perhaps six, volumes folio. And from his acknowledged learning and talent, the liberality of his views, and his capacity for laborious exertion, there can be no doubt, had the projected Dictionary made its appearance, that it would have been infinitely superior to that of Savary, or any other that had then been published. Morellet continued to occupy himself with this gigantic enterprise down to the Revolution, when he was compelled finally to abandon it" (McCulloch, p. 62). In his Prospectus, Morellet refers to earlier commercial dictionaries, both French and foreign, and explains the need for … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAWKESWORTH, John (editor).
[4], 351, [1] pp.First Dutch edition of an important collection of accounts of recent English maritime expeditions, including Cook's first expedition, edited by John Hawkesworth. "John Byron, in the Dolphin, visited the Tuamoto Islands and Nikunau in what would later be called the Gilbert Islands . . . Captain Wallis, also in the Dolphin, discovered the volcanic island of Tahiti, which he named King George III Island, and Moorea . . . Captain Carteret, in command of the Swallow, became separated from Captain Wallis and was feared lost. He discovered Pitcairn Island and some remote atolls in the South Seas. The first voyage under the not-yet-famous Captain Cook's command, on the Endeavour, was primarily of scientific nature . . . Entering the Pacific around Cape Horn, Cook reached Tahiti in 1769 and carried out the necessary astronomical observations. Excellent relations with the Tahitians were maintained, and Sir Joseph Banks . . . and Daniel C. Solander carried out extensive ethnological and botanical research. Leaving Tahiti in July, Cook discovered, named, and charted the Society Islands, and . . . explored New Zealand . . . Cook then headed towards Australia and discovered and charted the eastern coast . . ., naming the area New South Wales. Cook's discoveries won him prominence, promotion, and the opportunity to sail again. They also ensured John Hawkesworth's position in maritime literary history, as the official chronicler of Cook's first voyage'' (Hill). With some water stains at the head of 1 quire (O) and the top edge of the map dirty, but otherwise in fine conditi … [Click Below for Full Description]

UDAGAWA, Genshin.
[90]; [16] ll.Extremely rare original edition of a highly influential Japanese medical text book, the Ihan Teiko, (General outline of medical precepts). The work contains the 3 parts summary of the Ensei Ihan (Medical precepts of the West), compiled by the celebrated Japanese physician and successful Rangaku-sha (Scholar of Dutch learning) Udagawa Genshin (1769-1834, or 1824/5?), first published in 30 volumes in the same year and containing translations and excerpts of imported Dutch books on anatomy and physiology.Owing to the vast volume of this book, his pupil Fujii Hohtei summarized it to the present 3 volumes. With these procedures, the book became widely known and read among physicians who had an interest in Dutch style medicine, especially the function of the organs, and tissue. Although this book shows some classical immaturities, it had great influence on Japanese physicians in promoting the level of knowledge from pre-modern to modern medicine, even in the time of the closed-door policy. The work has been of great service in diffusing Western medical knowledge The atlas-volume contains a foreword in which the engraver Aodo Denzen is praised. It is the first engraved anatomical atlas published in Japan. The engravings were printed on rice paper, and mounted on thick paper, with explanatory text on the opposite page. In 1808 a second, revised edition of the Ihan Teiko was published.Serious wormholes in the margins of the last half of the atlas volume. Good set of the rare first edition.l Goodman, Dutch impact on Japan (1987), p. 133; Ranzaburo Otori, "The acceptance … [Click Below for Full Description]

16, [8] pp.Rare, first and only edition of the French translation of a description of the panorama showing the Battle of Waterloo - previously published in Dutch - which was erected on the Place Saint-Michel (now Place des Martyrs) in Brussels, apparently the first panorama shown in Brussels. Painted for a Dutch audience (at that time, the Kingdom of the Netherlands included modern Belgium and Luxemburg), the panorama depicted the moment during the battle in which the Prince of Orange, the future King Willem II of the Netherlands (crown prince when the panorama was on display), was wounded in the shoulder. The engraving shows the entire panorama and provides a key to the numerous notable participants and events. The booklet describes the battle in particular as related to the panorama and gives the order of battle for the Anglo-Dutch Army. The panorama, an initiative of the Amsterdam printer and bookseller Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834), was painted by Jan Kamphuysen, (1771-1829), Cornelis de Kruijf (1774-1828), Carel Lodewijk Hansen (1765-1840) and Louis Moritz (1773-1850). It was first erected in Amsterdam, where it was open to visitors from 1816 to 1818. In 1818 the panorama travelled to The Hague and Aachen, with Brussels being its final stop. The kings of the Netherlands and Prussia and the emperors of Austria and Russia visited it, as did the Duke of Wellington and several other commanding officers.Binding somewhat worn and with a few spots; title-page with a few water stains and some spots throughout; a good copy.l Koolhaas-Grosveld, De ontdekking van de Nederlander, pp. … [Click Below for Full Description]

[28] ll. (15 printed on both sides) plus 21 plates.Second edition in the original Dutch and French, printed from the plates of the first edition, of the famous first Dutch costume book to cover the different costumes of the various provinces, edited by the well-known publisher Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834) in Amsterdam. The illustrations are much more than just costume plates, for they show people (mostly peasants, but also city dwellers, clergymen, soldiers and others) engaged in a wide variety of activities (selling goods, going to church, courting, etc.), though always in their best clothes. The costumes include those of the Moravian brethren. Each plate has an engraved caption in French and Dutch with a detailed explanation on separate letterpress leaves in Dutch and French. The extensive texts accompanying the plates describe the costumes and people in their cultural, historical, moral and social context. The introduction notes that the costume plates were drawn from life under the direction of Jacques Kuyper (1761-1808), engraved by Lodewijk Gottlieb Portman (1772-post 1828) and coloured by the now famous Dutch painter Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853).With an 1816 Dutch inscription and two bookplates, manuscript titles and captions in English. In very good condition, with only an occasional minor spot or smudge and with a small corner of 1 leaf cut off, not approaching the text, and nearly untrimmed. The binding is rubbed and the board edges tattered. A beautiful, important and culturally illuminating costume book from the Napoleanic Netherlands.l Colas 1681; Landwehr, Co … [Click Below for Full Description]

A nice and colourful set of jigsaw puzzles depicting scenes from the life of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), 2 of the puzzles and the sample plate with address «Ulysse Paris» engraved in the image. Each puzzle has 20 pieces. The first depicts Napoleon Bonaparte calmly sleeping in a chair after having given orders to his generals on the eve of the battle of Austerlitz (1 Dec. 1805). The second shows a still fresh Napoleon addressing an exhausted soldier, a scene from the terrible battle at Lodi, Italy, 10 May 1796, between French forces under Napoleon Bonaparte and the Austrian rear guard led by Johann Beaulieu. The third shows Napoleon as merciful Emperor, receiving the thankful wife and children of a Prussian lord accused of conspiracy, but whom he nonetheless pardoned. The puzzle matching the scene mounted on the top of the box is not included; a few pieces cracked at thin spots; box slightly defective with traces of use and browned. Tall 8vo, in contemporary full mottled calf, the spines with simple gilt ruled raised bands, buff gilt trimmed and lettered labels and gilt volume numbers. The board edges gilt tooled, page edges speckled in red. xi, [errata], 445; iv, 394, [10] pp. A very fine set, beautifully preserved, the text is fresh and clean with little evidence of use, some very light cosmetic wear to the joints but the hinges firm and strong. FIRST EDITION, QUITE SCARCE AND AN EXCELLENT COPY OF NUGENT'S TRANSLATION OF GROSLEY'S TRAVELS. Although it is stated on the title-page that the authors were Swedish, in fact the author was Pierre Jean Grosley, the prolific French writer known for his erudition and insights. His "Observations on Italy" (originally published in French in 1764) is his most important work. Along with being an excellent account of Italy, Grosley also demonstrates within it through his descriptions of his countrymen in Italy, many foibles and vanities which are part of the French character. It is suggested by Nugent that by claiming the authors to be anonymous travelers from Swedish, the French public would accept the this criticism more easily than if it came from a Frenchman. It has also been suggested that as a travel narrative it would be considered of greater value if the travelers were from somewhere farther away. Kat. Interlibrum 270, 51. Second enlarged edition, first published in Naples in 1763, here now with corrections, additions, notes and on page 327 another dedicatory poem that gives the name of the author (Antonio Caputi dell oratorio sotto il nome di Archerio Filoseleno), who was a Capuchin monk from Apulia and a moon-lover (selenophil - filoseleno). In the preface he declares that he wants especially to address the young and their sense of the adventure with a poem that does not again, as most others, just talk about love. The story describes a journey to the moon and life on that satellite. The nice plates by Francesco de Luca show the chariot above a map of the Greek Islands, a map of the moon, places there etc. On the title-page there is a vignette with three dogs barking at the moon. - The book is listed in Ron Miller s "The Dream Machines. An Illustrated History of the Spaceship..." and it seems to be more noteworthy for its scientific ideas than its literary worth.
