Gellert, C.F. (Christian Fuerchtegott).
Copenhagen, 1769. 12 cm x 19 cm. 214 pages. Original Hardcover / 18th century half leather with paper-covered boards. Good condition but with some rubbing and fading to spine and frontcover and some occasional foxing. Upper hinge slightly damaged. Very scarce ! From the reference library of Hans Christian Andersen - Translator Erik Haugaard. (Wikipedia) Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (4 July 1715 - 13 December 1769) was a German poet, one of the forerunners of the golden age of German literature that was ushered in by Lessing. Charles Bonnet (March 13, 1720 - May 20, 1793), Swiss naturalist and philosophical writer, was born at Geneva, of a French family driven into Switzerland by the religious persecution in the 16th century. In this work, Bonnet argued that females carry within them all future generations in a miniature form. He believed these miniature beings, sometimes called hormonal, would be able to survive even great cataclysms such as the biblical Flood; he predicted, moreover, that these catastrophes brought about evolutionary change, and that after the next disaster, men would become angels, mammals would gain intelligence, and so on. SCHOEPFLIN, Johann Daniel.
Augsburg: Conr. Henr. Stage, 1769. 2 parts in 1 vol., quarto (210 x 168 mm). Near-contemporary mottled sheep, spine richly gilt, marbled endpapers, edges red. Light wear to extremities, occasional toning and spotting; a very good copy. Engraved headband, woodcut device, numerous cul-de-lampes, decorative typographic headers and footers. First collected edition of these 23 "praises of Louis XV, uttered by Schoepflin as the Académie of Strasbourg's official speaker" (Hoefer), and which were first published between 1722 and 1746. Johann Daniel Schöpflin (1694-1771) was a professor of history, rhetoric and law at the University of Strasbourg. His teaching attracted a plethora of young scholars to Strasbourg, he was notably one of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's teachers, and his talents were courted by Russia among others. To keep him, Strasbourg countered the Russian offer by granting him the means to visit Europe for two years. He participated in establishing the origin of printing, notably when his Vindiciæ typographicæ published in 1760, discloses "very curious exhibits from a lawsuit between Guttemberg [sic] and his associates: these exhibits greatly enlighten the origin of printing, but do not entirely disperse the darkness surrounding it" (Peignot). Schoepflin's stance was to prove that it was in Strasbourg that Gutenberg made his first printing trials. An attractive copy of an uncommon book, of which Copac only lists one copy at the National Library of Scotland. [4], xxxii, 712, iii, [11] pp. 2 charts, 8 folding copper plates of electrical machines and apparatus, catalogue of books, index, directions to the binder, ads, specimen chart. Contemporary full calf, gilt-ruled raised bands, red leather spine label; joints cracked. Gift inscription of Frank W. Gunsaulus to the Armour Institute of Technology, July 22, 1920. Very good. Second edition (first issued in 1767), corrected and enlarged. While composing this work, which at the time of its publication was the definitive work on electrical theory and research, Priestley communicated frequently with many of the significant electrical researchers of his day, including Franklin, Bergman, Volta, John Canton, Richard Price, and William Watson. The work is both a history of the study of electricity and a collection of the author's early experiments 'prior to those of Mr. Hawkesbee," and continuing through those of Benjamin Franklin and after. Franklin, who had instigated this work, read the manuscript and made corrections. / "Priestley's electrical work is mostly sound, and much of it is brilliant. It shows him at his best. The 'History of Electricity' supplied an excellent account of previous work both treated historically and summarised systematically, and his own reflexions and experiments . . . 1769. London: Printed for F. Newbery, the Corner of St. Paul's Church Yard, MDCCLXIX. [1769]. 2 vols. in 1, 12mo: [2, t-p], 214; [2, t-p], 224 pp. with 4 leaves supplied in facsimile. Recent half calf with marbled boards, gilt ruled backstrip with red morocco label. Occasional browning and spotting. Ex-Harvard copy with discrete gift stamp, release stamp, and pencilled call number on verso of title page. § First edition of this rare epistolary novel, widely attributed to the prolific yet almost forgotten author Phebe Gibbes, whose works Mary Wollstonecraft reviewed admiringly: "In these volumes some very uncommon words are introduced, and some very improbable adventures related; but there are many pages in them sufficiently pleasing and pathetic to distinguish this novel from the common run of such publications..." (Critical Review, 1770, p.43). The little that is now known of Phebe Gibbes (d.1805) comes from an application she made to the Royal Literary Fund for financial support in 1804. She describes herself as the impoverished mother of three children, widowed early, undermined by the compulsive gambling of her father-in-law, and subsisting on the proceeds of her writing. She lists 22 published titles, although only 14 of those have been traced and recorded and institutional copies are almost non-existent. Though sentimental in the style of Richardson, her novels have a strong feminist streak and common themes include child neglect, the lack of education for girls, and the evils of greed, gambling, and personal vanity. They were undoubtedly an influence on Wollstonecraf … [Click Below for Full Description]

Friedrich Kaiser
1769. In-8° relié cartonnage éditeur bleu, X-128 pp. Une très grande planche hors-texte dépliante. Quelques rares rousseurs. 7. 11. Juni 1778 in Schevingen; 1. A nice example of Tirion's plan of New Orleans and the mouth of the Mississippi River. The map was most likely drawn from Jeffery's large plan of the same 3 regions, published 10 years earlier. Giovan Battista PIRANESI (Mogliano Veneto 1720 - Roma 1778)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1769. RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE, Nicolas-Edme.
'Londres, chez Jean Nourse... A La Haye, chez Gosse junior, & Pinet' [but Paris: Delalain,], 1769. 8vo (196 × 124 mm), pp. [iv], 7-368, complete with half-title reading 'Idées singulières...', woodcut floral vignette to head of p. [17]. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt, sides with triple ruled borders, panelled spine with floral tools, morocco label. Evenly rubbed, slight worming to lower cover along foot of joint and (minimally) lower forecorner. A good copy. First edition, second issue (Londres and La Haye imprint). Intended as the first of a projected series of works with the general title Idées singulières, Le Pornographe is an important early manifesto for the regulation of prostitution. It also holds a significant place in the historical etymology of pornography: meaning literally 'one who writes about prostitutes', being the first modern coinage of a word used by the ancient Greeks. Restif issued the work anonymously, presenting it with a preface claiming that the idea was not a French invention at all but one found in the manuscript of an Englishman by the name of Lewis Moore. In a series of letters, the work presents an anatomy of prostitution, noting its inevitability in cities such as Paris and its dangers to public health and morality. Most interestingly, it then outlines a system of regulations, with well-managed maisons publiques, in which prostitutes are required to stay, where they are protected and cared for and where customers are strictly controlled. A major pre-occupation is the contemporary anxiety over the (wrongly) perceived decline in population, a d … [Click Below for Full Description]

BINDING. Bristol, 1774]. Bible, in English [1769-1774]. Book of
John Archdeacon, Printer to the University [of Cambridge]; T. Hardcover. Dates: 1769-1774. Together 3 volumes, 12mo. BOUND IN BRISTOL BY J. NORTON: Contemporary English morocco, gilt with large and small tools, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Some wear to binding extremities, headcaps a little frayed. Very good. ¶ Fine English provincial bindings: A set of three volumes bound by a little-known Bristol workshop that was active under the auspices of publisher John Norton. A virtually identical binding is in the Ramsden Collection of Signed Bindings at the British Library (BL c.150.c.7) and features Norton's ticket: "Made and Sold by J. Norton, Book & Printseller at ye Milton's Head, Wine Street, Bristol." We have identified another binding from the Norton shop in the Henry Davis Gift (Foot, II, no. 183, describing it only as "a London binding, ca. 1774") on a copy of Rider's British Merlin (London, 1774). Foot knew of one other binding by this shop in the Folger Shakespeare Library; her reference to ("BX 5145") is wrong: in fact the Folger example is a Book of Common Prayer (Oxford: Printed by T. Wright and W. Gill, 1772. The correct call number is: BX5145 A4 1772 Cage). * The tools on our Book of Common prayer shares the same roll along the spine as the other two volumes, although the decoration on the covers and spine compartment is different, and thus offers more evidence of the J. Norton workshop in Bristol. ¶ The name John Norton appears in the British Book Trade Index from 1775-1824, 1830, and 1842-1847 as Bookbinder, Bookseller, and Stationer in Bristol. Binding bumped and chipped, head and heel bands missing, front joint splitting, rear joint tender, mild browning to pages; otherwise very good. Cesare Bonesana di Beccaria, Marquis of Gualdrasco and Villareggio (1738-1794), was an Italian criminologist, jurist, philosopher and politician. He is widely considered the most talented jurist and one of the greatest thinkers of the Age of Enlightenment. On Crimes and Punishments (Dei delitti e delle pene), first published in Livorno 1764, is the book he is best remembered for today. It is notable for being an early example of a legal treatise condemning the death penalty and use of torture and being a founding work in the field of penology and Classical School of criminology. Before it appeared in English, the book was translated into French 1766 with a commentary by Voltaire, which was then translated into English and included in the first English edition which was published in 1767. This is the second English edition and still a very rare book in remarkably good condition. Text in English. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
