Haarlemmermeer, Leidsemeer - Schenk

Harkening back to the medieval Book of Hours, these manuscript hymns and poetry are a Christian devotional, with a Latin passage on the verso (left-side), and a French passage on the recto (right). One hundred and three pages are provided in manuscript (title page, and "102" paginated pages). Many of the passages relate to the Fetes de l"Annee, but are not limited to them. You'll find passages for Pentecost, Easter, various Saint's days, etc. A preponderance of the readings are specific to the period surrounding Jesus' death and resurrection. The beautiful "Dutch-Gilt" pastedowns are very similar to those attributed to Joseph Friederich Leopold of Augsburg (To Brighten Things Up, p.18, Schmoller, 2008). Likely Provenance - Title page reads "A L'usage de M.r le M.is Dauvet." Likely the Marquis d'Auvet, who fought in the 1762 French Campaign in West Germany, under Louis XV. The 1771 Dictionnaire Universel de la France (Desaint) lists him as the Lord of Maineville (p. 71). Previous Sales - Listed in the 16 decembre 1994, Etude Tajan auction, "Beaux Livres Anciens: Manuscrits, Incunables." as item no. 9, with an estimate of 4000/5000 francs. CAYEUX, Claude Philippe. 1688-1769
Paris: P. Vente, 1769. Contemporary gilt-ruled polished tan calf (rubbed), flat spine gilt à la grotesque with a gilt-lettered morocco label, red edges, blue silk marker. A talented sculptor and frame-maker, "Cayeux had started collecting in the first decade of the eighteenth century...his cabinet was renowned for its examples of 'our talented modern artists'" (Bailey). Indeed, his rich collection of bronzes, drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures is notable for the number of works of his French contemporaries, including paintings by François Boucher (1703-70) and C.-A. van Loo (1705-76), as well as a nearly complete set of engravings by Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1715-90). The total number of individual sheets in the collection must have been well north of one thousand, as many lots list anywhere from five to eighty drawings or prints. Cayeux's library of some 1400 books was also sold, though the only cataloged portion was his clutch of 18th-century priced art and curiosity auction catalogs - sales at which, no doubt, he was a buyer. One copy in the U.S. (Princeton). In good condition, contemporary title inscription On behalf of your most humble servant Cayeux (tr.) - most likely the collector's son, Louis-Philippe (d. 1776). ¶Bailey, Patriotic Taste: Collecting Modern Art in Pre-Revolutionary Paris 21-22; Advielle, Notice sur Philippe Cayeux passim; Blanc, Le Trésor de la Curiosité I: 158-61; Cicognara, Catalogo ragionato dei libri d'arte e d'antichità 4445; Lugt, Répertoire des catalogues des ventes publiques...1600-1825 1793.

Pierre Charlevoix's 'History of Paraguay' is a valuable history of the Jesuit missionary voyages to South America. It includes extensive descriptions on Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina with information about local tribes. Perhaps Cox's description of the work is the most telling of its value: "The most complete and satisfactory work on Paraguay, and the only one in which the vast system of the Jesuits is fully developed, the position of the author affording him peculiar opportunities for its examination.". Cesare Bonesana di Beccaria, Marquis of Gualdrasco and Villareggio (1738-1794), was an Italian criminologist, jurist, philosopher and politician. He is widely considered the most talented jurist and one of the greatest thinkers of the Age of Enlightenment. On Crimes and Punishments (Dei delitti e delle pene), first published in Livorno 1764, is the book he is best remembered for today. It is notable for being an early example of a legal treatise condemning the death penalty and use of torture and being a founding work in the field of penology and Classical School of criminology. Before it appeared in English, the book was translated into French 1766 with a commentary by Voltaire, which was then translated into English and included in the first English edition which was published in 1767. This is the second English edition and still a very rare book in remarkably good condition. Text in English.

Charles Rollin was an 18th-century French historian and teacher known for his works 'Ancient History' and 'Roman History.' While both works were very popular during Rollin's life, neither is considered highly accurate today. Both works were composed during a period in his life when he was banned from teaching for his religious beliefs. 'Ancient History' discusses the important facets of the histories of Greece, Egypt, Carthage, Assyria, Babylon, Syracuse, Persia, Macedonia and other kingdoms near the Middle East. Rollin covers commerce, military and war, religion and idol worship, arts and sciences, and conquests of Alexander the Great, as well as Biblical references.

WALLACE (Robert).
67092 WALLACE (Robert). A Londres, 1754. in-12. 3ff. 292pp. Bon exemplaire. Coquelin et Guillaumin, II, 860.
