Printing and the Mind of Man [215 : "The bible of Materialism" (.) He derived the moral and intellectual faculties from man's sensibility to impressions made by the external world, and saw human actions as entirely determined by pleasure and pain. He continued his direct attack on religion by attempting to show that it derived entirely from habit and custom. But the Systeme was not a negative or destructive book: Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a more desirable alternative.         Commentaries on the Laws of England. In Four Books. The Fourth Edition. 4 Vols.

Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1770-69. Large 4to. Bound in 4 uniform contemp. full calf. Raised bands. Titlelabels gone. Wear to spine ends. Some wear to spines and edges of covers, some scratches to covers, corners bumped. Some hinges weakening. (2),II,(8),485;(8),520,(18);(8),455,XXVII;(8),436,VII,(38) pp., 2 engraved plates (in vol. 2), Appendic to vol. 4. Wide-margined, light browning to margins. A few brownspots. ¶ "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history..... Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine... Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation... He takes a delight in describing and defending as the essence of the constitution the often anomalous complexities which had grown into the laws of England over the centuries. But he achieves the astonishing feat of communicating this delight, and this is due to a style which is itself always lucid and graceful" (PMM 212, the first edition 1765-69).

Dialogues sur le commerce des bleds. -

Londres (= Paris, Merlin), 1770. In-8 (19,5 x 12,5 cm.). (DBI 51, 460). Goldsmiths 10640. Kress 6730. Einaudi 2334. First edition. The Dialogues «are the most brilliant writings published up to that time in support of practical economics» (Palgrave II, 178). England, however, with its increased acreage of cultivated land resulting from the enclosure system, and the consequent rise of great landowners and farmers in the eighteenth century, especially welcomed innovations in agricultural methods. Arthur Young applied statistical methods to the study of agriculture, investigating both the statistics of production and the costs of this particular industry. He obtained his information from a series of extensive tours in England, Ireland and France, where he studied the state of agriculture at first hand. These journeys resulted in the publication of about two hundred and fifty books and pamphlets setting out his ideas and theories" (PMM).

Il Disertore a new Comic Opera as acted at the King's Theatre in the Hay Market. Written by Mr. BADINI. The Music entirely new, By Signor GUGLIELMI.

London, printed by T. Baldwin, N. 42, Fleet Street, 1770. (Price one Shilling). In 8vo (cm. 18,2); mezza pelle coeva; sguardie colorate; pp. VIII, 2 nn. a 95, (1). Axs

Kress 6730; Goldsmiths 10640. Boards with a few spots of soiling, otherwise an extremely fine copy--the margins especially ample, the text unusually clean, fresh, and bright, and the binding lustrous and scarcely worn. In a handsome binding of papal provenance, this economic essay on the wheat trade is one of the few works in the "dismal science" to be noted for its wit and vivacious style. Voltaire likened it to a cross between Plato and Molière, and Scottish economist John Ramsay McCulloch observed that "perhaps no foreigner ever obtained so perfect a mastery over the delicacies of the French language as Galiani has displayed in" this work. Written in the form of dialogues between two French noblemen, this debate over free market versus mercantilist policies in the French wheat trade was likely of interest to a pope known for his keen financial sense. Pope Pius VI (1717-99) received a doctorate in canon and civil law as Count Giovanni Angelo Braschi before entering the priesthood. Economics was an area of specialization for him: he headed the papal treasury before becoming a cardinal, and was noted for improving Vatican finances during his papacy.
