        Executoria de Hidalguia en Forma

1770. MARIN, Juan Antonio. Executoria de Hidalguia en Forma. Arroyo el Puerco: September 18, 1770. Thick folio, contemporary full rose velvet over wooden boards, ornate silver clasps and catches, French patterned endpapers, all edges gilded and gauffered. $17,500.Exquisitely illustrated manuscript on vellum, containing genealogical evidence of Spanish nobility and a census of individuals connected to Don Juan Antonio Marin of Arroyo el Puerco. In contemporary velvet binding.Persons who possess the legal status of nobility in a given kingdom may have obtained their status by inheritance, or by providing genealogical proof of noble lineage. This is a charter of enforceability of nobility, called “executoria” or “letters of nobility effect,” proving the legal position of Don Juan Antonio Marin of the town of Arroyo el Puerco in the Spanish nobility. Maintaining the list of noblemen in a particular area was a task of town councils, who required a census of noble families in their respective localities for fiscal, legal and social reasons. Many of these listings, however, were based solely on such external evidence as a familyÂ’s armorial bearings, manor of residence, patronage of chapels, and membership in certain noble brotherhoods. The variety and fallibility of the criteria used to determine the number of individuals belonging to a privileged class were the cause of many disputes. This wonderful manuscript executoria contains detailed documentation of individuals connected to Juan Antonio Marin, residing in Arroyo el Puerco (now Arroyo de la Luz, a municipality located in the province of Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain), who are entitled to the privileges of nobility. At the front of this manuscript are three magnificent full-page paintings on vellum: an image of the Virgin Mary (the townÂ’s patron saint was of the Virgin of Light), a portrait of a nobleman (presumably of Marin), and the arms of Marin. Manuscript fine, rubbing to bottom edges of velvet binding. A wonderful specimen of proof of nobility.

A Complete Treatise of Practical Navigation, Demonstrated from It's First Principles: with All the Necessary Tables To Which are Added, the Useful Theorems of Mensuration, Surveying, and Gauging; with their Application to Practice

Printed for W. Mount and T. Page, J. Brotherton and J. Sewell, J. Hinton, J. and F. Rivington, L. Hawes and W. Clarke and R. Collins [and 7 others in London], London 1770 - xii & 525 pages; Eighth edition revised and corrected by the author with large additions and alterations. Contemporary sheepskin leather, spine with five raised bands, dark red label lettered in gilt. The binding is rubbed and worn, with splitting along the hinges (boards still solidly attached by the cords), minor dampstains distributed throughout, but especially to the first and last few leaves. The author, Archibald Patoun (1706-1775) had a long career in the British military, where he became a sub-Director and Major in the Engineers, January 4, 1758. He is mainly known for this useful and detailed text on navigation and surveying which was first published in 1730; his text was printed in this expanded eighth edition in 1770, near the end of the author's life. This copy, despite wear and staining, is complete; it has the folding engraved plate facing page 262 and the astronomical and other figures in the text. But the main point of interest for this copy is its extraordinary provenance in Revolutionary-era Pennsylvania. There is an ownership signature of one "Gulielmus Smith / Ejus Liber/ A D 1782" at the head of the half title. It seems likely that this was the Scottish-born William Smith whose 1753 essay on education attracted the attention of Benjamin Franklin, who invited Smith to teach natural philosophy and logic at the Academy of Philadelphia. In 1755 the Academy was chartered as the College of Philadelphia and Smith was appointed Provost, which position he held until 1779 when the College became the University of the State of Pennsylvania; resumed his position in 1789, when the College was restored. The Rev. Smith's interests in the subject matter of this volume can be demonstrated by his leading part in the Pennsylvania arrangements to observe the eagerly awaited transit of Venus in June, 1769. Smith was a founding member of the American Philosophical Society, and organized its efforts concerning the transit. William Smith was at David Rittenhouse's house at Norriton, 20 miles outside Philadelphia for the fateful day, looking through the best of the three telescopes, and wrote the extensive report of their observations to the Society. In the last decade of his life, Smith, like the next owner, became a land-speculator involved in the development of the then western frontier of Pennsylvania (as the founder of Huntingdon). Below Smith's inscription is the first of three inscriptions by Michael Ross -- (repeated on the title page and the blank verso of the final page of text). The inscription on the title page is arranged neatly in fine handwriting in ink in the blank spaces in both margins and extends to the space below the long list of bookseller/publishers: "Mich'l Ross's / Book given/ to him / by Frederick / Esling October 5th 1783." Frederick Esling (1761-1800) is recorded among the list of inhabitants of the Province of Pennsylvania who took the oath of allegiance to the State Government after the Declaration of Independence; he appears under date of October 12, 1784 - "Frederick Esling, son of Paul Esling, of Philadelphia, a native, come to the age of 21 years." Later Frederick Esling ran away from the ship 'General Green' of the Pennsylvania Navy, August 22, 1799. "This ship was in commission only about six months; great difficulty was experienced in manning her, the men running away." Michael Ross, to whom Esling gave this book, has an even more interesting Pennsylvania history. Ross was born in Scotland on July 12, 1759. He and his mother crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1772 and landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They became indentured servants to Samuel Wallis, known as the "Land King" of the West Branch Susquehanna River Valley. Wallis had extensive holdings in Muncy Township, and brought Michael Ross and his mother to that place, where Ross was trained as a surveyor's assistant. Samuel Wallis must have been impressed with young Michael Ross as Wallis gave Ross 109 acres of land and a favorable letter of [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        winter scene - Haarlem.

Paris: Chez l'auteur, c. 1770. Octavo. (2)ff., + 23ff. of full-page engraved portraits. First edition. The engravings are portraits of prominent French actors in costume for their most famous roles, below which is printed the name of the character and the play and excerpted lines from that role. Portrayed here are Mesdemoiselles Clarion, Duménil, and Favart, and Messieurs Molé, Bellecour, and Le Kain in roles ranging from Sophocles to Racine. This copy has been augmented, not only by the elaborate hand-coloring, but also by manuscript notations facing each portrait. These notes explain when the actor began his or her theatrical career and give a brief description of the run of a particular production. Long seen as a rare book, there has only been one copy of the 1770 edition at auction in the last twenty-five years, and it was defective. Some mild internal spotting, else near fine in contemporary mottled calf, which shows an older, discreet rebacking and slight rounding to corners. (Colas 3073; Cohen/DeRicci 1066).

With 4 engraved plates. Contemporary red half roan, gold-tooled spine.

Buijnsters, Ned. lit. achtiende eeuw, pp. 108-109; Buisman 132 (1 copy); Gay & Lemonnyer I, col. 374; STCN (same copy); WorldCat & KVK (same copy). Second copy located of the first and only edition of "Confessions of a libertine", an 18th-century Dutch picaresque, erotic novel in which the principal narrator Karel tells his fiancée Charlotte about his promiscuous past. The story starts with how his father met his mother, Julia, in the monastery where he grew up in. Julia was the 17/18-year-old daughter of the abbot, who was "taught" all about sexuality by her father at an early age. The abbot passed away soon after Karel's father left for the army, and was replaced by a 45-year old Franciscan monk who took turns with both mother and daughter. The situation became unsustainable because of the mother's jealousy of her daughter, causing Julia to flee to her lover; Karel was conceived the following night. The life of Karel's parents gives a glimpse of the story that follows, often taking place in a religious environment. The novel does not only detail the sexual encounters however, but also provides arguments for free morals, for instance pointing out that our ancestors just followed their nature, without being obstructed by any morals. Novels like this have been neglected for about two hundred years and only in the last decennia interest has been revived. With bookplate and owner's inscription. The plate facing page 43 loosely inserted, but otherwise in very good condition. Spine slightly rubbed and colour of the paper sides faded, but still firm and otherwise good.

II split at foot), marbled endpapers. Internally only little browned in margins, ink signature to titles, leaves D4-5 vol. I soiled, faint dampstaining to a few leaves in vol. II, very minor occasional spotting. Provenance: bookplate with the arms of the Verthamon family to front pastedown of vol. I (removed in vol. II); Kachanska? (signature to title pages). A fine set in original binding. ----PMM 215; Kress 6737; Tchemerzine VI, 243. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (with comma after 'Londres' in imprint and the errata leaves). Published under the late Mirabaud's name to avoid censure. "In the Systeme, Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attempted to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. He derived the moral and intellectual faculties from man's sensibility to impressions made by the external world, and saw human actions as entirely determined by pleasure and pain. He continued his direct attack on religion by attempting to show that it derived entirely from habit and custom. But the Systeme was not a negative or destructive book: Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a more desirable alternative" (PMM 215). 1st Printing. Very Good.

Rare first edition second issue, either with the corrected mistakes, and therefore without the errata sheets. This edition is described by Tchemerzine. Full brown calf marbled time. A little lack of Volume I. head head cover of Volume II threadbare. Split bits in head and tail tome II. A dull corner in Volume II. Speckles on the title page of Volume I. Traces of dry old foxing, and sometimes humidity (low margin area) in two volumes, with no gravity. Good general appearance. The most famous work of the author (who is finally assigned to his death), bible materialism, and certainly one of the most iconic works of the Enlightenment. Ideas of Baron d'Holbach are not new, and draws its material cheerfully Hobbes, La Mettrie, Diderot and Helvetius, but he built a new conceptual: to become free, man must overcome prejudices and based on empiricism and materialism, ie the same nature, and therefore reject any religious thought. It is this open and assertive atheism and anti-clericalism which earned the publication of the book the sentence be slashed and burned demonstration.

Spine quite worn, with upper portion now missing, exposing the sewing and the folded ends of the gatherings, some soiling and marks to the front and rear covers, hinges still attached by the sewing, upper corner of the first several leaves bumped, some lifting to the front paste-down endpaper. With engraved frontispiece and over 100 half-page illustrations throughout, along with an assortment of woodcut decorative tailpieces. With two Rockwell Kent bookplates, designed by the artist himself, mounted to the front paste-down endpaper. These bookplates date from Kent's second and third marriages. While living on Monhegan early in the twentieth century, Rockwell Kent met his first wife, Kathleen Whiting, a niece of painter Abbott Handerson Thayer. Over the course of the next 13 years, the couple had five children together until their divorce in 1925. Kent was married again in 1926 to Frances Lee Higgins, and, after a 1939 divorce, yet another marriage followed in 1940 to Shirley ("Sally") Johnstone. Both bookplates Kent used for this book were exhibited at SUNY Plattsburg's State Art Museum "Art of the Bookplate" at the University's Rockwell Kent Gallery. [The larger plate is #458 - Frances and Rockwell Kent, 1928, image: 2 5/8 x 1 3/4 ", paper: 3 x 2 1/8 ". The smaller plate mounted beneath is #560- Sally and Rockwell Kent, 1955, image: approx. 1 1 x 1 1/4 ", paper: 1 5/16 x 1 1/2 "]. There is an interesting inscription in ink on a front blank leaf: "To Clarke Bowen / Compliments of / Mr. Joseph Calì / Artist / Malta / 31st March / 1914." Giuseppe Calì (1846 –1930) was a Maltese painter, born in Valletta of Neapolitan parents and educated at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Naples. He was a prolific artist: almost every church of any consequence in Malta boasts work by Giuseppe Calì. He was commemorated by the Republic of Malta with a series of four postage stamps in 1996, and a coin in 2004. The 'New York Times' (23 May 1915) printed a notice of a private exhibition of Clarke Bowen's collection of art, furniture and objects at his home, Woodhaven [Queens], noting that most of Bowen's paintings had been aquired in Malta. There are also brief eighteenth century ownership inscriptions on that same front blank and the title page. Printed as an unusually tall 12mo. Collation: [-] 8 A-Ii 12. With both half title and a genuine initial blank leaf ([-]1). Despite the wear to the fragile original boards, a clean and complete copy of what is now a rare book. OCLC Number: 636308750 (locating a single copy only, at the Sistema Bibliotecario Ticinese, Lugano, Switzerland. From the collation, it appears that this sole OCLC copy lacked the initial blank leaf, and had only the text of the "Vecchio Testamento" - ending with page 504). A search of the huge database of ICCU [4600 Italian libraries -- Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (delle biblioteche italiane e per le informazioni bibliografiche)] turns up three copies in Italy -- [Biblioteca comunale Planettiana - Jesi - AN; Biblioteca del Monte - Perugia - PG; and Biblioteca comunale Manfrediana - Faenza - RA]. The collation of the uniform listing is completely in accord with our copy, with the blank leaf, the frontispiece, 766 pages of text (Testamenti Vecchio e Nuovo) and [2] pages of "Tavola." The Hauptbibliothek Altstadt at Heidelberg University has a copy with identical pagination (and the same frontispiece), but evidently dated "1760." Since that date, ten years earlier than our copy, is not mentioned in the 4600 library database of the ICCU, I suggest that this is a typographical error in modern cataloguing rather than a variant. No copies recorded in the USA, none in the British Library, or the Bibliotheque Nationale. Some of the many illustrations throughout show some wear in this copy, and the plates from which those were printed were almost certainly reused from earlier sources. Still, ownership of this copy seemed [Attributes: Soft Cover]

- Table de Halley. - Orbites paraboliques & hyperboliques. Figure du ciel étoilé. - Systèmes d'étoiles fixes. - Objection. Orbites. Mouvement universel. - Centres. - Ellipses changées en cycloïdes. Mouvement universel. - Conclusions générales. Lambert "elaborated a theory according to which the thousands of stars surrounding the sun constituted a solar system. Moreover, he considered the Milky Way as a large number of such systems, that is, a system of higher order. ... The whole universe, Lambert postulated, had to be inhabited by creatures like human beings. Hence collisions of heavy bodies are not to be expected, and the wide spread fear that comets (which Lambert also supposed inhabited) might destroy the earth was unfounded." DSB VII, 598.         The Little Artist.

(Strasbourg: Gabory, c. 1770). Magnetic toy, consisting of four pasteboard squares, each side of which features a varnished hand-colored engraving, and two pasteboard boxes decorated with patterned paper. One of the boxes bears an illustrated label showing a young artist sitting before his easel, creating a painting that is determined by a rotating disc; the other box has a simple sliding top. The illustrations on the four pasteboard squares correspond to the eight images on the rotating disc. To use the toy, the user places one of the four squares into the plain box, slides the lid on, then places the painter's box on top. Like magic, a magnetic strip inside the square causes the disc to spin so that the artist is painting the same image that was just placed in the box below. The eight painting options include a maritime scene, a winter hunt, two still lifes, a portrait of a bewigged lady, who also appears in garden tableau, and a pastoral landscape. The set fully functional and housed in its original wooden box with a beveled sliding lid.

Letter on the fighting between the Ottomans and Mamluks in Egypt]. Bucharest, 13 December 1803. 4to (23.5 x 18.5 cm). Autograph letter in English, signed, written in brown ink on laid paper.

      - A signed autograph letter by William Drummond (1770-1828), Scottish classical scholar, poet and British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, written in Bucharest en route from Constantinople (Istanbul) to Berlin. The British had taken Alexandria from Napoleon's troops on 2 September 1801, but abandoned it in March 1803, disappointing the Mamluks and their leader Muhammad Bey al-Alfi, who had supported the British against the French and Ottoman forces and remained in Alexandria. The Ottomans, facing financial troubles, disbanded their non-Turkish forces without pay, and their Albanian captain Muhammad Ali (1769-1849) and his troops in Cairo mutinied and wrested control of the city from the Ottoman governor. Although this put the Albanians on the British and Mamluk side against the French and Ottomans, the Mamluks were not prepared to leave Cairo in Albanian hands. Drummond therefore notes in the present letter that the latest news when he left Constantinople was that the "Beys" (Mamluk forces under Muhammed Bey al-Alfi) had raised the siege of Alexandria and returned to Cairo due to "a mutinous spirit" among their "new allies", the Albanian troops, and he regrets that the "French interest" among the Mamluks "has taken a decided ascendancy." In the event, Muhammad Ali was to prevail in 1805 when Sultan Selim III in Istanbul recognised him as his viceroy in Egypt. In fine condition. A letter on the power struggle that was to bring Muhammad Ali to power in Egypt in the aftermath of the French Revolutionary War.

A Journey into Siberia, made by Order of the King of France.

London: for T. Jefferys,, 1770. Containing an Account of the Manners and Customs of the Russians, the Present State of their Empire; with the Natural History, and Geographical Description of their Country, and Level of the Road from Paris to Tobolsky. Translated from the French, with a Preface by the Translator. Quarto (264 x 196 mm). 20th-century half calf, raised bands to spine, black morocco label, marbled sides. Folding map frontispiece, 9 engraved plates of which one folding. Light browning, occasional mild spotting or soiling, chiefly to margins, very slightly stronger on leaves facing plates, folding map with a stipple of trivial spill-burns along the bottom edge, and shallow chipping along fore edge affecting the border only, pale marginal tide-marks to plates facing pp. xii, 109 and 111, plate to face p. 106 bound to page p. 108. A very good copy. First edition in English, from the library of the great industrialist Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), with his Etruria shelfmark label mounted to the folding map verso and another relaid to the front pastedown, and sometime owned by an early subscription library in Bolton, Lancashire, where it circulated among several leading figures of the Industrial Revolution. The second blank verso is inscribed in a contemporary hand with a list of borrowers, dates, and the stipulation "to be kept 10 days". The first name, listed on 19 February, the year unspecified, is Dorning Rasbotham (1730-1791), a Manchester-born antiquary and playwright who lived at Farnworth. It was later borrowed by a Mr Pilkington on 21 April, and on the 29th by a Mr S. Crompton: this is very likely Bolton merchant-manufacturer John Pilkington, and Samuel Crompton (1753-1827), inventor of the spinning mule, a machine which revolutionised cotton manufacturing. In 1781 Pilkington offered Crompton to demonstrate his machine before the Manchester Council of Manufacturers, and some years later, in 1812, supported his bid for financial assistance from the Chancellor of the Exchequer. On 21 July the book was taken out by Roger Dewhurst (d. 1806), businessman and owner of Bolton's Halliwell Hall. The last borrower is another Crompton, John, on 3 August. Rasbotham and Wedgwood, who were exact contemporaries, may have met through their membership of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society. Wedgwood had an extensive library mainly comprising works on neoclassical design. It does not appear to have been dispersed in his lifetime, but Wedgwood may have been encouraged to donate a few items to a friendly of society of fellow industrialists by his wife: he is recorded as having told his partner Thomas Bentley that "My Sally says I must buy no more books until I build her a new house & suggests I read some of those I have already - what nonsense she talks sometimes" (Wedgwood Museum, online). Chappé d'Auteroche (1722/8-69) was a French astronomer. "In 1761, by the order of the king of France, and by arrangement with Catherine II, he undertook an expedition into Siberia to observe the transit of Venus. From Paris he reached St Petersburg, then sledged to Tobolsk, where in 1761 the transit was duly observed. The expedition carried out a large number of scientific measurements en route, and reported on the geography of the region and the customs of the inhabitants" (Howgego). His account provides "a mass of detail" (Nerhood) on Russian mercantile exports, mining (iron ore, copper, and gold), and flora and fauna, as well as meteorological observations. It is also noted "for its forthright and sometimes provocative descriptions of Russian manners and characters" (Hill), which provoked a rebuttal, The Antidote, written "By a Lover of Truth" and sometimes attributed to Catherine the Great.

        CARDS OF ANTIENT HISTORY.

Two set of cards, each containing 52 cards. The first set lacks the title card [51 of 52], but covers the period from the First Epoch. Adam, or the Creation. Year of the World 1. 4004 Before Christ, ending at the VIth Lunar Eclipse, 502 B.C. The second set of cards is titled: CARDS OF ANTIENT HISTORY, from the Battle of Marathon, to the Birth of Jesus Christ; including the History of 500 years. By John Ryland, A.M. Master of a Boarding School at Northampton. Published. Oct' 1st 1770. Printed for Carrington Bowles, Map & Printseller, No 69 in St. Paul's Church Yard, London. Each card measures 9.3 x 6.3 cm. The cards were issued in two sets, as stated on card 51 of the set, is the notification: 'NB. AA second set of Cards, containing the remaining principal Facts down to the Birth of Christ, will soon be published.' Both sets are in excellent condition. A rare 18th century teaching aid, that tackles the task of marrying recorded history with Biblical mythology and dogma. So far as we can ascertain, it is unrecorded. We cannot be certain which John Ryland was the author of these cards, as both John Collett Ryland (1723-1792), and his son (1753 to 1825) were schoolmasters and authors of works concerned with religion and education.

We now know that Diderot was associated with the project and wrote the last chapter of the abstract code of nature. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Copy of a letter to J. Ellis, Esq., of Gray's-inn, from Dr. Solander... [in] The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politicks, and Literature for the Year 1769.

London: Printed for J. Dodsley, 1770. Two volumes in one, octavo; contemporary ms. ownership and shelf marks on front pastedown; an excellent copy in contemporary calf. A little-known text relating to Cook's first voyage, in fact one of the first accounts of the voyage to be printed: a letter from Solander to John Ellis written from Rio de Janeiro, dated 1 December 1768, and here published in the 1769 volume of the Annual Register. Solander writes of his and Joseph Banks's frustration at being refused permission by the viceroy to go ashore to study the abundant plant life but how, by 'fair means and foul', they had managed to acquire some 300 specimens, and identify a number of new species. Although only a few pages long, the letter bristles with scientific comment on the flora and fauna they had managed to examine, and simultaneously shows Solander's eagerness for the voyage, commenting on how he has enlisted some of the brighter sailors to help identify and catalogue new species.Solander, who trained with Linnaeus, moved to England in 1759 for what was meant to be a brief visit, but it became his permanent home. He became firm friends with John Ellis, and made substantial contributions to many of his most important works, including the Natural History of Zoophytes. However, it is the patronage of Sir Joseph Banks which was the turning point in Solander's career, and which led to his joining Cook's first voyage. On their return, Solander became Banks' secretary and librarian, a portmanteau position that also meant that he was, in effect, the curator of the natural history collection.Like Banks, Solander was shy of taking credit for his work, and although he worked on some of the most important natural history projects of his generation, very few pieces were actually signed, and have only been attributed to him by later scholarship. Despite his many travels, Solander never returned to Sweden, and died at Soho Square in 1782.
