        January

London: Robert Sayer and John King, circa 1770. Engraving, coloured by hand, by R. S.[heppard]. (Cut close to plate mark). 13 1/2 x 9 3/8 inches. 14 x 9 7/8 inches. A very rare image that is both a highly decorative botanical print and an important document in the history of gardening. The plate comes from a very rare later issue of a series called 'Twelve Months of Flowers', originally issued by Robert Furber in 1730. Furber was a nurseryman with gardens near Hyde Park Gate in Kensington, London. The series was issued as a luxurious catalogue for his stock: over 400 flowers are illustrated, and each is identified in the key below the picture so that customers could easily order their requirements. These plates thus form an illustrated check-list of the varieties and forms of flowers that were popular with gardeners in the early 18th century. Furber later issued a small quarto book which contained reduced versions of the original plates. The present plate, published by Sayer, is from a very rare later version, re-engraved yet again, but to a size that is mid-way between the original and the quarto issue.

      - circa 1770. Hand-coloured engraving. Title is inscribed in a contemporary hand on verso of sheet. In excellent condition. Trimmed as usual and mounted on washline background. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 13 1/2 x 19 inches. 16 3/8 x 22 inches. A wonderful continental view in the grand tradition of the romantic landscape. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of their surroundings. English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles and on the Continent. Theses image not only inspired a sense of national pride but also served as cherished mementos for eager collectors on the "Grand Tour". Prints and paintings of Ruins and antiquities were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a reminder of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. This is a wonderful example of a picturesque eighteenth century landscape print. By trimming the image within the platemark and mounting it on a decorative washline background the print has the effect of a landscape painting. The likeness is heightened by the addition of added body colour in the image and the use of a heavy painterly technique of engraving. This practice was common amongst engravers and printsellers who wished to capitalize on this trend for picturesque landscapes. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection, which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints. Clayton, The English Print 1688-1802 p. 155; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections, (Supplement) 2715a

The Lion and Stag. From an Original Picture of Mr. Stubbs

London: Published by Benjamin Green, 1 October, 1770. Hand-coloured mezzotint. State ii/iii, with publication line 'Published as the Act Directs Octbr. 1. 1770. by Benj. Green, Drawing Master to Christs Hospital, & at the Print Shops'. 16 7/8 x 21 7/8 inches. 18 1/4 x 22 7/8 inches. This dramatic print is a wonderful example of Stubbs's celebrated work, it combines intense drama with naturalistic observation to create a truly sublime image. From the early 1760s to the 1790s, Stubbs returned again and again to the theme of horses and stags stalked and attacked by lions. In his hands the encounter takes on the high, elemental drama of a scene from myth, suggesting the struggle of good against evil, beauty against ugliness, civilization against savagery. The simple, relief-like design of the composition in 'The Lion and Stag' brings a sense of quiet power to this emotive image which is incredibly dramatic. Stubbs made many studies of caged lions at the Tower of London and at Lord Shelbourne's menagerie on Hounslow Heath, which helped him truthfully depict the attitude and movement of these great animals. This print completed Benjamin Green's series of six mezzotints after Stubbs's paintings, but there is some dispute as to which painting Green's mezzotint reproduced. It was most likely after Stubbs's work, 'A Lion Devouring a Stag' which was exhibited at the Society of Arts in 1769. Alternatively, it might have been derived from Stubbs painting 'Lion Devouring a Deer' which had been shown in 1770. In this dramatic work Stubbs exhibits his artistic genius and infuses this dramatic work with a sublime beauty. Lennox-Boyd, George Stubbs 9 ii/iii; Siltzer The Story of British Sporting Prints p. 270; Snelgrove, British Sporting and Animal Prints 1658-1874 no.23; Sparrow, British Sporting Artists from Barlow to Herring p.134

        THE DESERTED VILLAGE

" London: Printed for W. Griffin ... 1770" [sic].. vi,[7]-24pp. 12mo. Full red-brown morocco, a.e.g. Modest foxing, joints rubbed, and lower joint cracked at top, otherwise a very good copy, and a good association copy, with the bookplates of Ralph Isham and George Clinton Ward. One of three pirated printings (conforming to Scott's printing 'c'), considered by some in earlier generations, without sound basis, to be "trial" printings, ostensibly preceding the legitimate quarto first edition. William Todd investigated these piracies, as well as their progeny, and published his findings in STUDIES IN BIBLIOGRAPHY VI (1953), where this particular printing conforms to his printing 'A', which he suggests was printed in Edinburgh before 19 July 1770, probably by Walter Ruddiman, printer and publisher of the WEEKLY MAGAZINE, OR EDINBURGH AMUSEMENT. The printing in hand is described in the Rothschild catalogue, quoting from Todd's then unpublished notes, as "the first of a series of pirated editions possibly originating in Edinburgh, beyond the reach of the law on copyright, and thereafter reprinted in one shop after another across the country." It's likely that those pirates would have rolled over in their graves had they lived to see the prices realized by copies prior to the conclusive exposure of their true nature: Kern copy $3900 (1929) and the Bishop copy of another printing (Scott A) $2100 (later the Rothschild copy, exhibited at the Hayward exhibition). HAYWARD 184 (Scott's variant A). Todd,"The 'Private Issues' of THE DSERTED VILLAGE," STUDIES IN BIBLIOGRAPHY, vi, 1954, pp.25 - 44. ROTHSCHILD 1033. SCOTT, pp. 242ff.

Augsburg, 'Akademische Kunsthandlung', & With captions in French and German below the image., The "optical prints" (vue d'optique) " perspective views" were a form of entertainment meant to be seen through devices were made to be viewed in a special apparatus called a Zograscope (not included) Drawn with an exaggerated one-point perspective, each print took on a nearly three-dimensional appearance when viewed in the mirror through the optique lens. The name of the print at the top was reversed in the mirror and thus right-reading when viewed by this device. Strong hand color distinguishes perspective views. These were often drawn in course crude colours inside the images, which worked better when viewed in the zograscope under low light., Stunning vue d'optique prints "Collection des Prospects," in this case, was of 5 various fictitious views of Quebec that Habermann published in collaboration with his partner Balthazar Frederic Leizelt.& These prints offered middle- and upper-class viewers in Europe a glimpse of far-off places as North America (Quebec, New York and Boston). As well, traveling vendors, went to fairs offering views of the images through the Optical Machine for a few pennies to the very curious general public.& "In considering the fictitous views of Canada, made up wholly from the imagination of engravers assisted by what they had heard from travellers, the names of François Xavier Habermann and Balthazar Freric Leeizelt... easily come first. Their Collection of Prospects was completely the product of a fertile imagination... quite unassisted by fact. The astonished collector comes across these well-drawn.... coloured etchings, having the strange peculiarity of the title et the top of the print reading backwards [as with the present image]... These prints were probably published about 1775. Habermann's views of New York, done about the same time are equally fictitious'." (Spendlove The Face of Early Canada p.83)

A view of his Grace the Duke of Kingston's house at Thoresby, with his Grace & attendants going a setting

[London?]: [circa 1770?]. Line engraving, by Pritchard (expert small repairs to left and right margins). 10 3/4 x 16 7/8 inches. 13 3/8 x 20 inches. A fine example of this excellent portrait (of both the Duke and his pointers) after Tillemans. This is a reduced version of a view (on two plates) published (according to Siltzer) by Sayer with an image area of 28 1/2 x 16 inches. Peter Tillemans "came to England from Antwerp in 1708. His first commissions were to paint topographical views... Each required figures to give life to the well-painted landscapes and what was more natural than to show some of the people mounted... his large and busily populated pictures of Newmarket Heath have considerable charm. The influence of his friend John Wotton is most pronounced in his horse portraiture while his compositions owe something to Francis Barlow. Tillemans' patrons included all the principal race-horse owners of the period... He must have known Newmarket well, already established as the home of the turf... Tillemans' influence on later sporting artists is considerable... The engravings after his Newmarket paintings provide a fascinating record of training and horse management when the turf was developing quickly in the hands of the aristocracy of the period." (Charles Lane British Racing Prints p.173) Mellon British Sporting and Animal Prints p. 187; Schwerdt III, p124; cf. Siltzer p.274 (large version only).

Handbound Anthology of Poetry from the 1700s

FONT>Existence of God, 1770 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A Collection of Poetry from 1770 and 1771, bound together as one volume. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and spine decoration. Ekins's Loves of Medea and Jason is a first edition. W. H. Roberts's are two first editions and a second edition. Armine and Elviraand The Hermit of Warkworth aresecond editions. Fables of Flora is a third edition. William Hayward Roberts, d. 1791, was a poet and Church of England clergyman. He was educated at Eton, and King's College, Cambridge. He returned to Eton as an assistant, then fellow. He became provost in 1781. Roberts combined his work at Eton with the position of rector. From 1772 until his death, Roberts was one of the king's chaplains. Amongst Roberts's works, A Poetical Essay, on the Existence of God rehearses arguments from order and design to refute the teachings of Aristotle and Epicurus. It rewrites Lucretius's apostrophe to Venus as an address to conscience, and ends by illustrating the providence of God through a brief, polemical, and strongly anti-Catholic history of the English church in the sixteenth century. (DNB)Oliver Goldsmith, 1728 1774, was an Anglo-Irish writer, poet, and physician known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield, his pastoral poem The Deserted Village, written in memory of his brother, and his plays. Edmund Cartwright, 1743 1823, was an English clergyman, poet, and inventor of the power loom. In 1770 he published Armine and Elviraa Legendary Poem, which rapidly went through a series of editions, and was later thought highly of by Sir Walter Scott. (DNB)John Langhorne, 1735 - 1779, was an English poet and clergyman. He was first a tutor, and later an Usher at Wakefield free school. In Wakefield, he took orders, being ordained deacon. He is chiefly remembered as being the translator, jointly with his brother, Rev. William Langhorne, of Plutarch's Lives, but in his day he had some reputation as a poet, his chief works in poetry being Studley Park and Fables of Flora. Thomas Percy, 1729 1811, was Bishop of Dromore. Before being made bishop, he was chaplain to George III. Percy's work continues to attract the attention of scholars around the world. Percy not only travelled from grocer's warehouse to bishop's palace but in a parallel literary career produced at least one book, the Reliques, long recognized as a seminal work of English Romanticism (Groom, 1. 1) and considered a landmark in European literature. (DNB)Jeffrey Ekins, 1731 - 1791, was the dean of Carlisle. Educated atEton and King's College, Cambridge, Ekinslater taught atEton, before accepting therectory of Quainton.
