Copy of a letter to J. Ellis, Esq. , of Gray's-inn, from Dr. Solander... [in], The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politicks, and Literature for the Year 1769

London: Printed for J. Dodsley, 1770. Two volumes in one, octavo; contemporary ms. ownership and shelf marks on front pastedown; an excellent copy in contemporary calf. Early news from the Endeavour. OA little-known first voyage publication, in fact one of the first accounts of the voyage to be printed: a letter from Solander to John Ellis written from Rio de Janeiro, dated 1 December 1768. Solander writes of his and Joseph Banks's frustration at being refused permission by the viceroy to go ashore to study the abundant plant life but how, by 'fair means and foul', they had managed to acquire some 300 specimens, and identify a number of new species. Although only a few pages long, the letter bristles with scientific comment on the flora and fauna they had managed to examine, and simultaneously shows Solander's eagerness for the voyage, commenting on how he has enlisted some of the brighter sailors to help identify and catalogue new species. He also recommends that visitors to Madeira seek out the assistance of one Dr Heberden who, Solander notes, contributed to their scientific study by procuring Banks and himself 'access to a nunnery' - given the ribald jokes later made at Banks' expense on the subject of his amorous adventures during the voyage, one wonders at the wisdom of this aside. Solander, who trained with Linnaeus, moved to England in 1759 for what was meant to be a brief visit, but it became his permanent home. With introductions from his former tutor, he became firm friends with John Ellis, and made substantial contributions to many of his most important works, including the Natural History of Zoophytes. However, it is the patronage of Sir Joseph Banks which was the turning point in Solander's career, and which led to his joining Cook's first voyage. On their return, Solander became Banks' secretary and librarian, a portmanteau position that also meant that he was, in effect, the curator of the natural history collection. Like Banks, Solander was very shy of taking credit for his work, and although he worked on some of the most important natural history projects of his generation, very few pieces were actually signed, and have only been attributed to him by later scholarship. Despite his many travels, Solander never returned to Sweden, and died at Soho Square in 1782. Not recorded by Beddie.

A Londra, 1770. Octavo, xvi, 104 pp.; a fine uncut copy in original soft boards, rather worn and stained but nonetheless attractive, owner's inscription 'Girolamo Gherardini' on title. Very rare Italian translation of Bricaire de la Dixmerie's fictional account of Autourou, published in Paris in the same year; one of the earliest works on Tahiti. The book is not recorded by the National Union Catalog, nor by the standard bibliography of Tahiti (O'Reilly and Reitman's Bibliographie de Tahiti). Rolf Du Rietz comments in the Kroepelien catalogue that the printing is so rare that he has been able to locate only two copies of the work and no reference to it in any bibliography or catalogue. This important work relating to Tahiti takes the form of a letter allegedly written by Aotourou, the Tahitian who returned to Paris with Bougainville. There was much criticism of Bougainville on this point - Diderot particularly upbraided him for having 'torn' the native from his environment - but Autourou was a sensation, and apparently fascinated by the French capital. Bougainville himself paid to kit out a ship when Autourou expressed a wish to return home, but the Tahitian was killed en voyage by an outbreak of small pox. La Dixmerie was personally involved with Aotourou, and helped introduce him to Parisian high society. Despite this personal contact, la Dixmerie remained virulently opposed to the popular notion of the noble savage, just as he sided with Diderot in arguing that it was a violence to have brought Autourou back to France. In this fictional letter, Aotourou satirically compares the mores of Paris society with that of Nouvelle-Cythère. The description of Tahiti is based on the Lettre de Monsieur de Commerson, the naturalist on the voyage, which was first published in 1769. Published the next year, la Dixmerie's imaginative work is, as du Rietz comments, 'one of the earliest books relating to Tahiti.' Not until the 1779 publication of Taitbout's Essai sur l'Isle d'Otahiti would there be any serious separate work on Tahiti.

A view of his Grace the Duke of Kingston's house at Thoresby, with his Grace & attendants going a setting

[London?] 1770 - A fine example of this excellent portrait (of both the Duke and his pointers) after Tillemans. This is a reduced version of a view (on two plates) published (according to Siltzer) by Sayer with an image area of 28 1/2 x 16 inches. Peter Tillemans "came to England from Antwerp in 1708. His first commissions were to paint topographical views. Each required figures to give life to the well-painted landscapes and what was more natural than to show some of the people mounted. his large and busily populated pictures of Newmarket Heath have considerable charm. The influence of his friend John Wotton is most pronounced in his horse portraiture while his compositions owe something to Francis Barlow. Tillemans' patrons included all the principal race-horse owners of the period. He must have known Newmarket well, already established as the home of the turf. Tillemans' influence on later sporting artists is considerable. The engravings after his Newmarket paintings provide a fascinating record of training and horse management when the turf was developing quickly in the hands of the aristocracy of the period." (Charles Lane British Racing Prints p.173) Mellon British Sporting and Animal Prints p. 187; Schwerdt III, p124; cf. Siltzer p.274 (large version only). Line engraving, by Pritchard (expert small repairs to left and right margins).

Robert Sayer and John King, London 1770 - A very rare image that is both a highly decorative botanical print and an important document in the history of gardening. The plate comes from a very rare later issue of a series called 'Twelve Months of Flowers', originally issued by Robert Furber in 1730. Furber was a nurseryman with gardens near Hyde Park Gate in Kensington, London. The series was issued as a luxurious catalogue for his stock: over 400 flowers are illustrated, and each is identified in the key below the picture so that customers could easily order their requirements. These plates thus form an illustrated check-list of the varieties and forms of flowers that were popular with gardeners in the early 18th century. Furber later issued a small quarto book which contained reduced versions of the original plates. The present plate, published by Sayer, is from a very rare later version, re-engraved yet again, but to a size that is mid-way between the original and the quarto issue. Engraving, coloured by hand, by R. S.[heppard]. (Cut close to plate mark).

Woty was involved with William Dodd in the Christian's Magazine, and with Francis Fawkes in The Poetical Calendar. About 1767 he found a patron in Washington Shirley, 5th Earl Ferrers (1722-1778), for whom he did legal work. Woty died at Loughborough in 1791, having acquired some reputation as a bon vivant.

        Shooting, Plate II

Published by Thomas Bradford 1770 - A magnificent example of plate two from George Stubbs's rare shooting series, which highlights the artistic genius of this celebrated sporting artist. George Stubbs is considered to be one of the greatest English painters. His ingenious animal and sporting pictures remain unrivalled in their passionate depiction of emotion and their commitment to naturalistic observation. Stubbs' attached great importance to the belief that art should imitate nature, not the work of other artists. He spent years carefully studying human and equine anatomy so that he could truthfully represent natural form and movement. Through arduous application, he became a talented mezzotint engraver and worked with ease in both soft ground and etching techniques. This rare series is a wonderful example of Stubbs's genius; it brings a subtle complexity of composition and human interaction to a popular sporting theme, thus creating a set of truly compelling images. Stubbs sets his famous shooting series around Creswell Crag's steep limestone formations on the border between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. In the Crags were caves containing the remains of prehistoric animals, as well as tools and weapons that were some of the oldest signs of human life in Britain. With their primeval and savage associations, they clearly appealed to Stubbs's imagination, and he repeatedly used them as a dramatic backdrop in his emotive paintings. In the shooting series, the crags serve to suggest the idea of the hunt as an age-old human endeavor. Although the two hunters are portrayed as city gentlemen, in this setting they echo the ancient struggle of man against nature, by literally following in the footsteps of early mankind. The paintings were not exhibited as a group in Stubbs's lifetime, but rather individually at the Society of Artists in 1767, 1768, 1769, and 1770.         Segelschiffe im Hafen.

. Sepia-Pinsel, mit Sepia-Feder umrandet, auf Bütten. 4,5:5,9 cm.

Une petite fille reçevant ses étrennes' [A little girl receives her gifts]

[Frankfurt 1770 - A fine first state impression of this charming image, printed 'avant la lettre': before the addition of any lettering to the title panel. A reflective, fashionable lady in a tumultuous silk gown, leans forward slightly to hand some coins to her daughter. The small child stands looking up at her mother, one hand clasping an overflowing apron full of presents: a tankard, a corset; she holds her other hand up to her lips as if to say "a single kiss from you would mean more to me than all these gifts". Schenau was the pseudonym of Johann Eleazar Zeissig (1737-1806), who was at the time this engraving was made, the most popular genre painter in France. He was born in Saxony, but went to France in 1756 and stayed until 1770. He was successful in many realms of visual arts: painting, engraving, sculpture. He was most directly influenced by Greuze and liked to infuse his genre paintings with elements of emotion missing from most boudoir scenes. Justus Chevillet (1729-1790) was also born in Germany, but enjoyed a successful career in Paris as an engraver. Le Blanc II, p.11, no.81. Engraving, by Juste Chevillet, after Schenau (1 1/2 inch tear to left margin).

An Historical Collection of the several Voyages and Discoveries in the South Pacific Ocean

London: Printed for the author, 1770-, 1771. Two volumes in one, quarto, 17 engraved maps and plates; a couple of small stains, and some general ageing, but a good copy (complete with the 2 pp. Contents and Directions, often missing) in contemporary half calf, all edges red, some wear to joints and extremities. State of play in the Pacific. First edition: Dalrymple&#39;s history of the early voyages to the Southern Ocean is one of the foundation books for any voyage library. This classic voyage text was a work of far-reaching importance by the leading English hydrographer. Passionately involved in the argument over the possible existence of a southern continent, Dalrymple partially translates here some twelve original accounts which support his belief in its existence. His collection begins with Magellan&#39;s voyage of 1519, and the Spanish accounts that he translates include Mendana&#39;s voyage to the Solomon Islands in 1595, and that of De Quiros in 1606. The Dutch accounts include those of Le Maire, Schouten, Tasman, and Roggeveen. Dalrymple&#39;s long introduction on trade and his &#39;investigation of what may be farther expected in the South Sea&#39; carefully expound his belief in the existence of a "Great Southern Continent", a theory only finally laid to rest when Cook later sailed right over a substantial portion of it. Dalrymple (1737-1808), the great hydrographer, who had made his career in the East India Company, had originally been offered the command of the Endeavour voyage to observe the transit of Venus, but partly because of his insistence on being given an Admiralty commission, the command went instead to Cook. His disappointment is hinted at in the remarkable "undedications" of this work: to Byron &#39;who discovered scarcely anything but Patagonians&#39; and to Banks who &#39;infatuated with female blandishments forgot for what he went abroad and hastened back to amuse the European world with stories of enchantments&hellip;&#39;. Dalrymple&#39;s work was issued in a rather haphazard fashion. The first volume first appeared in a now exceedingly rare issue with a 1769 title-page and a dedication leaf also dated 1769, then in an equally rare edition with a cancel-title dated 1770. This version represents the form most often seen, with both title and dedication present as cancels.

n.p., circa, 1770. Duodecimo, 72 pp., drop-title only, as published with no separate title-page and no colophon; very good, in modern boards, morocco label. A very good copy of this uncommon title by the fiery Comte de Lauraguais, best known for his association with Sir Joseph Banks, and particularly for his abortive attempt to publish a narrative by Banks of the Endeavour voyage. The pamphlet dates from the period just before Lauraguais fled to sanctuary in London, where he would pursue his acquaintance with Banks and ultimately attempt to publish his friend&#39;s letter on the Cook voyage. Lauraguais (1733-1824) had published his Mémoire sur la Compagnie des Indes in 1770, and it had been the subject of some strong attacks by figures such as the economist Morellet. Here, the Dupont of the title is actually one of Morellet&#39;s closest allies, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours, the French economist whose children established the famous chemical company Dupont in the United States. Dupont was himself the protégé of François Quesnay, and formed part of a group dedicated to economic and cultural reforms. The Compagnie des Indes (or French East India Company) had been disbanded amid great controversy in 1769, and naturally became the subject of strong polemics by many influential French writers, especially after Louis XVI decreed that the properties and assets of the Company should be transferred to the state. Both Dupont and Lauraguais had already published strongly-worded essays on the subject, and as this pamphlet confirms, they didn&#39;t see eye-to-eye on the subject. As a result, this pamphlet is a violent attack against Dupont de Nemours: indeed, Lauraguais&#39;s outbursts on the Compagnie des Indes at this time were one of the main reasons he went into self-imposed exile in England in 1771. Lauraguais was notoriously quick to print, but despite his rather voluminous output, all of his pamphlets and books are quite scarce. This pamphlet is certainly very rare, and although noted in Barbier&#39;s bibliography it is not widely known. Copies are scarce in international collections, although the works collates identically with a copy in the Bibliothèque National de France.

Padua: Nella Stamperia del Seminario, 1770. <p>Toaldo, Giuseppe (1719-97). . . 4to. [20], 222pp. Engraved plate, 4 folding printed tables. Padua: Nella Stamperia del Seminario, 1770. 255 x 193 mm. (uncut). 20th century half vellum, marbled boards, hand-lettered spine. Minor foxing and soiling, marginal tear in half-title repaired, but very good.</p> <p>First Edition of Toaldo&#146;s work on the influence of the stars and planets on the Earth&#146;s weather and atmosphere, which went through three editions in the 18th century and was translated into French. Toaldo was a professor of astronomy and meteorology at the University of Padua and the first director of the city&#146;s astronomical observatory, which he was instrumental in having built. He began taking meteorological observations in 1766 and in 1778 founded the Giornale astro-meteorologico, a yearly journal whose purpose was to perform meteorological forecasts based on astronomical cycles and the previous years&#146; statistical data. He was very interested in &#147;performing sound statistical analyses, to find teleconnections between astronomical and meteorological events, and to establish practical connections between meteorology and human health or agriculture&#148; (Camuffo, p. 33).</p> <p>Included in Toaldo&#146;s work is a brief paper by astronomer and physicist Roger Joseph Boscovich (1711-87) describing a new type of pendulum (&#147;Descrizione d&#146;un nuovo pendolo a correzione,&#148; pp. 216-222).

Tabulae motuum solis et lunae novae et correctae. . . quibus accedit methodus longitudinum promota, eodem auctore

London: W. & J. Richardson, 1770. <p>The First Tables Accurate Enough to Find the Longitude at Sea </p><p>Mayer, Johann Tobias (1723-1762). Tabulae motuum solis et lunae novae et correctae. . . quibus accedit methodus longitudinum promota, eodem auctore. Edited by Nevil Maskelyne (1732-1811). 4to. vii, 136, cxxx, [2]pp. 2 folding engraved plates. London: William and John Richardson for John Nourse, John Mount and Thomas Page, 1770. 270 x 217 mm. Contemporary tree calf (rebacked). Fine copy. Bookplate of Margaret Maskelyne (1786-1858), the only child of Nevil Maskelyne, on front pastedown. Bookplate of Haskell F. Norman. </p><p>First Edition of Mayer&#146;s highly accurate lunar tables, which were the first to allow mariners to calculate longitude at sea to within a degree (60 miles). For these tables Mayer&#146;s widow received £3000 of the British Admiralty&#146;s prize established by the Act of Parliament of 12 November 1713 to &#147;such person or persons as shall discover the longitude at sea.&#148; After a long struggle John Harrison eventually received between £8000 and £9000 of the same prize money for the invention of the marine chronometer. </p><p>A preliminary version of Mayer&#146;s tables was published in the proceedings of the Göttingen Scientific Society in 1753; meanwhile, Mayer continued to improve the tables until his death in 1762. In 1763 Mayer&#146;s widow sent a copy of the improved tables to the Board of Longitude in application of the prize. The tables were first edited for publication seven years later by Nevil Maskelyne, the Astronomer Royal, who had tested Mayer&#146;s earlier tables with positive results on a voyage to St. Helena in 1761; Maskelyne used Mayer&#146;s tables to compute the lunar and solar ephemerides in the early editions of his Nautical Almanac, and since he was on the Board of Longitude we may assume that he was influential in having a portion of the prize awarded to Mayer&#146;s widow. Appended to Mayer&#146;s tables are two short tracts, one on determining longitude by lunar distances, together with a description of the reflecting circle (invented by Mayer in 1752), and the other on a formula for atmospheric refraction, which applies a remarkably accurate correction for temperature. </p><p>Because Nevil Maskelyne had only one child, Margaret Maskelyne, who was not an astronomer, and who would not have otherwise found a use for these tables, it is highly likely that this is Nevil Maskelyne&#146;s personal copy of these tables so famous in the history of longitude. Contemporary crushed green morocco gilt ca. 1770, all edges gilt, extremities very slightly rubbed. First and last leaves browned, a few spots, but a fine copy in a superb, unfaded, and extremely rare original binding. Ownership signature of V. C. Auffret in Vol. I.</p><p>First issue of the First Edition. Printing and the Mind of Man 215. The Baron d&#39;Holbach, one of the first self-proclaimed atheists in Europe, was the author of a number of philosophical works advocating materialism and attacking religion as detrimental to the moral advancement of humanity. His most famous work was the controversial Systeme de la Nature, in which he</p><p>"rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attempted to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. He derived the moral and intellectual faculties from man&#39;s sensibility to impressions made by the external world, and saw human actions as entirely determined by pleasure and pain. He continued his direct attack on religion by attempting to show that it derived entirely from habit and custom. But the Systeme was not a negative or destructive book: Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a more desirable alternative "(Printing and the Mind of Man).</p><p>The radical ideas expressed in the Systeme came under widespread attack, and even the free-thinking Voltaire was moved to refute the Systeme&#39;s arguments in his own Dictionnaire philosophique. D&#39;Holbach issued the work pseudonymously under the name of the late Jean-Baptiste de Mirabaud and had it published in Amsterdam by the publisher of Rousseau, in order to avoid censure. This work is extremely rare in a contemporary French morocco binding. Of French morocco bindings of the 18th century Green morocco bindings are the rarest and most desirable. Wikipedia. </p>

Hlfldr. 8°. A. Cioranescu. I.J.A. Encyclopaedia Judaica, 16, pp. 220-221. Hier vindt men een kleine literatuurlijst m.b.t. Voltaires houding t.a.v. het jodendom.

Londres [i.e. Amsterdam, ohne Drucker, und: Berlin, Nourse, [i.e. Voss]), 1770.. Kl.-8vo. (15,7:10,5 cm). 2 Bll., 394 S., 1 Bl.; 70 S. Mit 1 Holzstich-Titelvignette.

(1) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
