Schönes Exemplar in gutem Erhalt. Schmale Rändchen, 3 Wappen ankoloriert, kurzer Randeinriss und 1 kl. Loch restauriert.

      - Francoise Nicolas Martinet Histoire naturelle Des Oiseaux, by George Louis Marie Leclerc, Comte de Buffon Paris: 1770-86 Hand colored copperplate engravings 15” x 13 1/4” framed François Nicolas Martinet engraved illustrations of birds for books by some of the most influential ornithologists in 18th-century France. Born in 1731, Martinet was trained as an engineer and draftsman. Engraving illustrations for books probably began as a secondary profession, but as his popularity and output grew it must have consumed the majority of his time. Martinet’s son Alexandre eventually assisted him and made many engravings, as is known from signatures and dates on the prints. Martinet also had two sisters, Angélique and Marie Thérèse, who were engravers as well, but it is not known if they worked with him. Towards the end of his career, Martinet drew upon his experience in engraving birds for others to publish his own ornithology books, producing plates until his death sometime in the late 1780s or early 1790s (sources disagree on the year). This edition, containing 1,008 images by Martinet, was certainly the most ambitious and comprehensive bird book, which had appeared at the time of its publication. Martinet completed both the original drawings and hand-engraved all of the copperplates. A broad spectrum of birds are shown, including birds native to Europe, as well as exotic tropical birds such as parrots and toucans. Each is rendered in a scientific manner, outlined in yellow border. They are distinctly 18th century in conception and style, generally with a hint of the bird’s habitat, such as a tree branch, rock or water. Overall this print is in very good condition with some foxing/staining.

Veduta della Basilica, e Piazza di S.Pietro in Vaticano.

Rome - From the important series "Vedute di Roma". The print is on heavy laid 18th century Roman paper with the watermark present on the right hand side of the print but due to thickness of the paper and very strong impression it is impossible to recognize the watermark and hence the date. It is perhaps circa 1770 -mid 70s.Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imag

Vue de la lanterne de Demosthenes a Athenes

Paris Delatour et Musier 1770 - Engraved view, 56x 41 cms,Black and white. The engraving shows this Choragic monument with some people in the foreground. The Choragic Monument of Lysicrates near the Acropolis of Athens was erected by the choregos Lysicrates, a wealthy patron of musical performances in the Theater of Dionysus to commemorate the award of first prize in 335/334 BCE, to one of the performances he had sponsored. The choregos was the sponsor who paid for and supervised the training of the dramatic dance-chorus.In 1658, a French Capuchin monastery was founded by the site; in 1669 the monastery succeeded in purchasing the monument, then being called the "Lantern of Demosthenes" after the famous Athenian statesman of the 4th c. BCE.[2] A reading of its inscription by Jacob Spon established its original purpose.[3] The young British architects James "Athenian" Stuart and Nicholas Revett published the first measured drawings of the monument in their Antiquities of Athens, London 1762. Le Roy´s view shows the lantern attached to the french monastery. The "Ruines" by Le Roy was an important source of inspiration and influenced the neoclassical taste in Europe during XVIII c. - Cordier, Bibliotheca Sinica 1376.         Trinity Harbour / Carboniere and Harbour Grace / St. John's Harbour / Cape Broyle Harbour .[published in: The North-American Pilot for Newfoundland, Labradore, the Gulf and River St.Laurence: being a collection of sixty accurate charts and plans, drawn from original surveys: taken by James Cook and Michael Lane, Surveyors, and Joseph Gilbert, and other officers in the King's service]

Robert Sayer & John Bennett, London 1770 - A spectacular chart from the survey which laid the foundation upon which Captain Cook's reputation as a surveyor and navigator rested. At the conclusion of the French and Indian War, the British needed accurate charts of the territories that had been awarded to them in the Treaty of Paris. The areas that were of particular interest to the Admiralty included Labrador and Newfoundland. "On 19 April 1763 James Cook, Master R.N. was ordered by the Admiralty to proceed to Newfoundland 'in order to your taking a survey of the Parts of the Coasts and Harbours of that Island'" (Tooley & Skelton, in Tooley's The Mapping of America p.177). His appointment would have been based, in no small part, on the glowing endorsment of his commanding officer, who had written to the Admiralty in December 1762 "that from my experience of Mr. Cook's genius and capacity, I think him well fitted for the work he has undertaken, and for greater undertakings of the same kind". "The charting of Newfoundland and southern Labrador by Cook. and by his successor Michael Lane . was unequalled, for thoroughness and method, by any previous hydrographic work by Englishmen [and also allowed Cook to master the art of practical surveying and navigation, in a way that brought him to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society at a crucial moment. More immediately.] it produced the first charts of this extensive and difficult coastline that could (in the words of a later hydrographer) 'with any degree of safety be trusted by the seaman'" (Tooley & Skelton op. cit.). Cook started by surveying the northwest stretch of coastline in 1763 and 1764, then in 1765 and 1766 the south coast between Cape Ray and the Burin Peninsula, and in 1767 the west coast. His work was interrupted by what was to prove to be the first of his three great voyages to the Pacific, and the work on Newfoundland and southern Labrador was finished by Michael Lane between 1768 and 1773. Thomas Jefferys used the charts by Cook and others to form the "Collection of Charts of 1769-70, a prototype . for the celebrated North-American Pilot which was to be published in five English editions from 1775 to 1806" (Tooley & Skelton op,cit.). The present example is from Sayer and Bennett's 1775 edition (Tooley & Skelton's # 13). Skelton & Tooley, "The Marine Surveys of James Cook in North America" 13.IV in Tooley, The Mapping of America. Copper engraving with four maps on one single-page sheet (plate area: 15 x 11 1/2 inches). Good condition, old horizontal fold.

        Anas Acuta, Mas

Amsterdam, Jan Christian Sepp 1770 - Cornelius Nozeman (1712-86) From Nederlandsche Vogelen Amsterdam: Jan Christian Sepp, 1770-1827 Hand-colored copperplate engraving 26” x 21” framed Nederlandsche Vogelen was the first comprehensive account of the avifauna of Holland. The plates depict all species known in the Netherlands at the time of publication. The plates frequently feature eggs and nests; a few are dedicated entirely to these subjects. The text was written by Cornelius Nozeman, a pastor who owned a cabinet of natural history specimens, and on his death, the work was taken over by Dr. Martinus Houttuyn (1720-1798). When he too died, the enterprise was continued probably by the publishers with the assistance of C.J. Temminck, to whom many of the specimens featured in the last two parts of the work belonged. Anker’s definitive catalogue of bird books praises the Nozeman publication for depicting the birds “in their natural surroundings and as far as possible in their natural attitudes.” Another major critic, Sacheverell Sitwell, calls this “an ornament to the ago of Rococo.”

Historiae sive synopsis methodicae Conchyliorum et tabularum anatomicarum.

      - Editio altera. Oxonii, typogr. Clarendoniano, 1770. Folio (378 x 240mm). pp. iv, 6, 7, (4), 12, 77, with 439 engraved plates (depicting 1083 figures). Early 19th century half calf, gilt ornamented spine with red gilt lettered label A fine large paper copy of the scarce second edition, edited by Huddesford, of the first great English work on Conchology. "There is no actual text but the section headings and frugal descriptions are engraved on the plates with the figures. The complete first edition was published between 1585 and 1692. The engravings, some of which are very fine indeed, were mostly executed by Lister's daughter Susanna and his wife Anna who worked them up from their original water-colour drawings; many of these still exist at Oxford. The species illustrated are recognisable more often than not and none is reversed - a remarkable achievement in itself considering that gastropod shells had to be engraved in mirror image to ensure correct reproduction. The scientific value of the engravings is enhanced still further by numerous indications of locality" (Dance pp.23-24). "In the text the editor has printed notes written by Lister in a set of proofs; also two indexes, one according to Lister, the other to Linnaeus" (Keynes no. 49). Our copy agrees with Keynes quoting 439 engraved plates.Nissen ZBI, 2529; Keynes, Dr. Martin Lister no. 49. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Veduta del Castello dell\' Acqua Paola sul Monte Aureo

late 1770s to the mid 1780s, Rome - Hind 21 (2nd state). John Wilton-Ely 174.The watermark that is present is number 61 on page 1169 of John Wilton-Ely. The watermark is dated from the late 1770s to the mid 1780s. From the series \"Veduta di Roma\".Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and \"like Callot makes great use of the swelling line\" (Hind). They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi\'s own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: Ficacci plate 838, Image Size : 394x
