Tabulae Motuum Solis et Lunae novae et correctae auctore Tobia Mayer: quibis accredit methodus longitudinum promota, eodem auctore

London: William and John Richardson for Nourse, Mount and Page, 1770. Quarto, two separately paginated parts bound together with the errata leaves and two engraved folding plates; title-page a little toned, some offsetting affects one of the plates, a few old stamps (see below); very good in recent quarter mottled calf with gilt lettering, accompanied by an old manuscript leaf of calculations. The first complete and accurate publication of lunar and solar positions, a milestone in the history of the longitude problem. This book is the work of German cartographer Tobias Mayer, who in the process of reconciling land maps experienced similar challenges to a mariner in calculating accurate longitude. 'Mayer had to rely on the moon for fixed positions in time and space, just as a sailor would. And in the course of meeting his own needs for predicting the lunar position, he grasped an advance that applied directly to the longitude problem; he created the first set of lunar tables for the moon's location at twelve hour intervals' (Sobel, Longitude, p.97). Mayer's great contribution lay in his skilful use and co-ordination of pre-existing data, rather than novel thinking or deployment of advanced astronomical equipment. Accurate and comprehensive, Mayer's results appealed to those who used the lunar method to reckon the longitude (most significantly the Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne). Unfortunately his untimely decease in 1762 prevented Mayer claiming the enormous longitude prize promised by Parliament in 1713. Nonetheless his widow was awarded £3000 the following year and Mayer's tables were distributed by the Admiralty for use at sea. Maskelyne championed Mayer's case, having used his tables during the experimental voyage to St. Helena in 1761, and assiduously prepared them for publication in this book.Mayer's tables formed the basis for the lunar and solar ephemerides published in early editions of the Nautical Almanac, although by 1780 they were effectively superseded by more accurate measurements collected at the Greenwich Royal Observatory. This copy has a prestigious provenance, the title page bearing nineteenth-century blind and ink stamps of the Princeton University observatory library. It was later in the collection of Frank Streeter, with his bookplate. Norman 1468; Sotheran I, 2934-5.

Histoire critique de Jésus-Christ, ou, Analyse raisonnée des Evangiles (A Critical History of Jesus Christ, or, an Analysis by Reason of the Evangelists).

No Publisher [Marc-Michel Rey] No Date [1770], No City [Amsterdam] - TP + III-VIII = Epître a Uranie + [I]-XXXII = Preface + [1]-[400], small Octavo. First Edition (Vercruysse 1770, A-4).Holbach's All-Out Assault on the Christian GospelsThis is the last of five works listed by the Encyclopedia of Philosophy as being important to Holbach's "second phase" of writing activity which consisted of a relentless militancy against organized religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular. "The theme recurring throughout these books represented a vehement restatement of almost all the arguments for unbelief current in eighteenth-century France. The most characteristic are the following: The idea and cult of God sprang from the ignorant terror of primitive man seeking to placate the destructive powers of nature, and they have survived ever since through superstition; religious history is a catalogue of senseless disputes, intolerance, prejudice, persecution and crime; the clergy is ordinarily engaged in exploiting the gullibility of the people for its own profit; religions have invariably support tyrannical governments to further their own ambitions of domination; Scriptural 'proofs' of Christianity are worthless as objective historical evidence; theological dogmas are a maze of delusion and mystification on which no rational, just of useful social institution can be built." (Encyclopedia of Philosophy, vol. IV, pp.49-50) an old, multi-colored paper cover with a floral design. The paper has the pattern and impression showing through on the back side and it looks very much like a piece of wallpaper. The title page is browned along the right edge suggesting that the book at one time had another cover. There is a small part of title page missing along the upper, inside gutter (no loss of text). Someone has written in pencil in a European hand "1872" at the very bottom of the title page. Completely uncut. Despite the rather garish wraps, this is a very nice copy of this revolutionary Enlightenment work. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

Londres [Amsterdam]: S.n. [Marc Michel Rey], 1770. Fine. S.n. [Marc Michel Rey], Londres [Amsterdam] 1770, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in 8 (11,5x19,5cm), (12) 366pp. et (6) 408pp., relié. - Rare first edition second issue, either with the corrected mistakes, and therefore without the errata sheets. This edition is described by Tchemerzine. Full brown calf marbled time. A little lack of Volume I. head head cover of Volume II threadbare. Split bits in head and tail tome II. A dull corner in Volume II. Speckles on the title page of Volume I. Traces of dry old foxing, and sometimes humidity (low margin area) in two volumes, with no gravity. Good general appearance. The most famous work of the author (who is finally assigned to his death), bible materialism, and certainly one of the most iconic works of the Enlightenment. Ideas of Baron d'Holbach are not new, and draws its material cheerfully Hobbes, La Mettrie, Diderot and Helvetius, but he built a new conceptual: to become free, man must overcome prejudices and based on empiricism and materialism, ie the same nature, and therefore reject any religious thought. It is this open and assertive atheism and anti-clericalism which earned the publication of the book the sentence be slashed and burned demonstration. We now know that Diderot was associated with the project and wrote the last chapter of the abstract code of nature. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

      I. De origine Ungrorum II. De origine Tatarorum III. De diversis Shinarum imperatoris nominibus titulisque IV. De Hyperboreis. Edidit Aug. Ludovicus Schloezer. Göttingen & Gotha, impensis Dieterichianis, 1770. 8:o. (8),119 s. Häftad i samtida gråpappersomslag.

William Emerson (14 May 1701 - 20 May 1782), English mathematician, was born at Hurworth, near Darlington, where his father, Dudley Emerson, also a mathematician, taught a school. Unsuccessful as a teacher, he devoted himself entirely to studious retirement, and published many works which are singularly free from errata. In mechanics he never advanced a proposition which he had not previously tested in practice, nor published an invention without first proving its effects by a model. He was skilled in the science of music, the theory of sounds, and the ancient and modern scales; but he never attained any excellence as a performer. He died on 20 May 1782 at his native village.

1770 - A striking colonial manuscript chart of Maracaibo, signed by Emasabel. c.1770. [Maracaibo]. Manuscript chart executed in pen, ink and coloured washes. Backed on linen, old folds now strengthened, captioning, index and title clearly legible and the colouring still very fresh, a few pieces missing at folds, but overall fine. It is, nonetheless, a handsome map. 498 mm x 395 mm. A rare 18th century chart of northern Venezuela focused on the Maracaibo Lake. The cartographer signs the map as “Delineado por D. Fran.co Xavier de Emasabel. Piloto de Altura año de 1770.” The map depicts the bay of Maracaibo in northwest Venezuela just to the north of Lake Maracaibo. It notes the cities of Maracaibo, and Altagracia. The cartouche includes an extensive numbered key to the most significant geographical points in the region (26 numbers). The key allows us a glimpse of what Maracaibo looked like, and its presumable -for the considerable detail and information it presents-, that the author was allowed and made use of the most up-to-date sources of information and geographical exploration of the region. We have been unable to find much information on Emasabel, however, at the Woodbury Lowery collection (Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division) there is a map, also by him, entitled “Carta Ydrografica que contiene desde el cabo de Nazao y Rio Elquibo en la costa de Surinam hasta el cabo de Carlos en Virginia. Yncluiendo en ella las Yslas de Barlovento, de sotavento, las Lucayas y demas aderentes, a todas las costas, sus trabesias y Yslas de Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, la de Cuba y Jamayca” and it is signed by Francisco Xavier de Emasabel, declaring himself “Piloto maior del Comercio de Cadiz”. In the “Extractos de las juntas generales celebradas por la Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del Pais en la villa de Bilbao por Julio de 1787” there is reference to a Francisco Emasabel “Capitan del puerto de Deva ofreció tres mapas marítimas que trabajó á instancia de los Pilotos del comercio de Cádiz”. Surviving colonial manuscript charts of South America are only seldom found in the market.

Veduta degli Avanzi del Castro Pretorio nella Villa Adriana a Tivoli. (View of the Remains of the Praetorian Fort [the Poecile], Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli).

. Copperprint. Rome 1770. 65x37 cm. Printed on strong paper with the watermark fleur - des - lis. * When Piranesi arrived in Rome in the year 1740 he was instantly impressed by the splendour of the antique ruins in the ancient city. For almost a year he was an apprentice in the studio of Guiseppe Vasi, his later colleague and rival, where he learned the art of engraving copper plates. He began his extremely successful career depicting Rome's architectural gems (antique and contemporary) on extra large-scale single sheets: the famous "Vedute di Roma" (Views of Rome). Piranesi was an obsessed artist. Relentlessly he added plates, sometimes variations of former ones, to the collection, until, at the end of his life, there was a total of 135 views showing the majesty and the splendour of the once powerful capital of the Roman empire.         An Historical Collection of the several Voyages and Discoveries in the South Pacific Ocean

London: for the author, 1770. Two volumes, quarto, 16 engraved maps and plates (mostly folding), half-titles, with the rare contents leaf; an extremely attractive set in contemporary tree calf, spine ruled in gilt with double red and green morocco labels. Dawn of the golden age of Pacific exploration. First edition of the great hydrographer's influential history of the early voyages to the Southern Ocean: this is a foundation work for any collection of Pacific voyages because "Dalrymple was the first critical editor of discoveries in Australasia and Polynesia" (Hill catalogue). More commonly seen with both volumes bound together as one large volume, this superb and unusually complete set is in a very attractive contemporary tree-calf binding.Alexander Dalrymple, the great East India Company-trained hydrographer, had a lifelong interest in the mapping of the Pacific, and the present work is his magnum opus on the subject. Dalrymple had originally been offered the command of the Endeavour voyage to observe the transit of Venus, but partly because of his insistence on being given an Admiralty commission, the command went to Cook instead. His disappointment is hinted at in the remarkable "undedications" of this work, a series of barely disguised and very bitter digs at the three great circumnavigators Byron, Carteret and Wallis. The work is most famous for its suite of privately-printed maps and views, including his genuinely important "Map of the World, on a new projection" (sometimes called his map of "The Great Pacific Ocean"), and it is fair to say that its original publication effectively announced the dawn of the golden age of Pacific exploration. Dalrymple collected together all the major accounts of Spanish and Dutch voyages: beginning with Magellan's voyage of 1519, together with the Spanish accounts including those of Mendana to the Solomon Islands in 1595 and Quiros in 1606. The Dutch accounts include those of Le Maire, Schouten, Tasman and Roggeveen. Dalrymple's long introduction on trade and his 'investigation of what may be farther expected in the South Sea' expound his belief in the existence of a "Great Southern Continent", a theory firmly laid to rest when Cook later sailed right over it.This is an excellent copy of the regular issue of the work dated 1770-1771, with the armorial bookplates of Samuel Leightonhouse. While collations by later bibliographers sometimes vary, this set does include the full suite of 16 maps and plates, as well as the rare contents leaf with the directions for placing the plates.

Paris: Delalain, 1770. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 12mo. 39, [1], 228, [3] pp. With 4 engraved plates of different types of stoves and fireplaces fueled by coal. Contemporary brown sprinkled calf (refurbished, joints strengthened), small defect in leather on front cover; textblock very clean. Provenance: Ex libris stamp of Dr. AJJ Vandevelde, Gandav" on first blank leaf. Highly interesting and prescient work concerning the use of coal to counteract the widespread destruction of forests in 18th-century France, during which time "only small number of citizens are consuming virtually all the wood" while coal is available in abundance. The author - a medical doctor - draws attention to the fact that prolonged exposure to wood smoke is unhealthy in the extreme. He argues that coal can produce a fuel that burns cleaner and hotter than wood charcoal. Its convenience, low cost, and stable heating capacity combine to mandate the strongest possible consideration as an alternative to forest fuels, otherwise the forests will be doomed (cf. the Avertissment, pp. 6-8). It was the overwhelming need for energy to run the new technologies invented during the Industrial Revolution that provided the real opportunity for coal to fill Its first role as a dominant worldwide supplier of energy. We have found very few early scientists who advocated coal in order to save forests. Morand (1726-1784) was a French polymath who personified the Age of the Enlightenment: he was simultaneously a medical doctor and lecturer in anatomy, librarian for the Académie des Sciences, mineralogist, and a member of most of the foreign learned societies.         Travels into North America. Containing its Natural History, and a Circumstantial Account of its Plantations and Agriculture in General ? the Civil, Ecclesiastical and Commercial State of the Country

Warrington, 1770. First English edition. xvi, 400, [1]; [title-leaf], [8] (subscribers list), [3]-352; viii, 310, [14] pp. (index) plus folding map and six plates. 3 vols. 8vo. 19th-century three-quarter calf, spines gilt. Internally quite clean. Very good. The first English edition, translated by John Reinhold Forster, after the original Swedish edition published in Stockholm in 1753-61.  Kalm was in America in 1748 and 1749, using Philadelphia as his base of operations.  Much of the first volume is devoted to his observations on the country around that city; much of the second volume relates to his sojourn in the Swedish settlements in southern New Jersey; and the remaining volume concerns his journey north through New York to Montreal and Quebec, and his experiences there in 1749.  "One of the most reliable eighteenth-century accounts of American natural history, social organization, and political situation. Kalm gives an especially important account of the American Swedish settlements" (Streeter). This is also an important work of natural history and botany. Kalm was a student of Linnaeus, and he gathered impressive collections during his American travels. He was also a close friend of American naturalist John Bartram and travelled with him into New York State. The text is accompanied by an excellent and large map, "A New and Accurate Map of Part of North America ...," which shows the northeastern section of North America from Virginia north and west to Ohio.

1770 - Early manuscript chart of the Falklands. [c.1770]. Manuscript in ink and wash colour; watermark of “Konig & Son”, marginal restorations virtually not affecting, excellent condition overall. 730 mm x 530 mm. Stunning manuscript survey of the Falkland Islands coasts, one of the earliest known, of high artistic craftsmanship and historically important. The Falklands are an archipelago located c.400km off the coast of Argentina; it is composed of two larger islands (Isla de la Soledad and Gran Malvinas) and several smaller ones, both larger islands are well depicted on this chart. It is currently under British management, however its sovereignty has been disputed by Argentina since 1833, and has lead to armed conflict. The history of the islands goes back to the first decades of American exploration –with several claims of sighting, from John Davis in 1592 and Sir Richard Hawkins in 1594, however the first confirmed one being that of Sebald de Weert in 1600-, although uncharted and unsettled until the second half of the 18th century, when explorers Byron and Bougainville almost simultaneously claimed them for their respective countries. Bougainville’s settling ended up with the French leaving the islands after Spain’s claim; the British however, lead by John Byron, founded Port Edgmond [a.k.a. Santa Catalina, see Torres Lanzas, nº 86]. The Spanish later became aware of their presence, which again occasioned frictions between governments and raised the possibility of war. In 1833, the British reoccupied the islands permanently –with the exception of a short period in 1982. Drawn after a running performed by Joseph Antonio Puig in July 1770. Puig was the pilot aboard the San Francisco de Paula [a.k.a. La Catalana], a bergantin commanded by Manuel Pando. As a side note, it would be him as well who contributed to the mysterious Pepys island history, claiming to have sighted it and baptized it the Catalana. This voyage took Puig from Montevideo to the Falklands and back. The enterprise was seemingly on behalf of the Rl. Compa. de Comercio de Barcelona desde Buenos Ayres, the track marked on this chart in red. Torres Lanzas in his “” at the Archivo General de Indias, catalogues two similar maps, none of which are of this quality. On a map located at the Biblioteca Nacional de España, entitled “Plano de las Yslas Malvinas situadas en la latitude de 51 grados 28 minutos y en 316 grados 30 minutos”, ordered by Phelipe Ruiz Puente, we see a much primitive rendering of the islands, which are charted rudimentarily, although the cartouche explains they contain the last explorations done by land and sea. It is catalogued as c.1769 and reflects the Spanish expeditions done between 1768 and 1769 to locate the English settlement of Port Edgmont. The map is beautifully made and cartographically accurate, it features a numbered key to the straits, bays, adjacent islands and other points of interest. Iconographically an interesting map, the artist decorated it with two drawings opposing themselves, the first being the portrait of a lady holding a scale and the second a settler seating by a fire heating coffee or some beverage, background with a seal, whales and a turtle. The centre of the map features the Spanish Lion in threatening posture. Two cartouches at the upper right and left corners feature coastal profiles. Provenance, there is an unidentified wax seal on the map, title and number on verso.

        Quintus Horatius Flaccus

Typis Johannis Baskerville (John Baskerville) 1770 - - Typis Johannis Baskerville (John Baskerville), Birminghamiae (Birmingham) 1770, in-4 (22x29cm), (1p. tit) 344pp., relié. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition illustrated with a frontispiece engraved by Henriquez, a title label engraved by Le Grand and four figures Plover, engraved by Laine, Leveau, Le Vasseur and Godfrey; absent Cohen. Contemporary binding in full red morocco, back with five nerves richly decorated with gilded finials and nets, as part of Havana morocco, triple net gilded framing dishes, double net gilded on the cuts, golden lace coaching contreplats All edges gilt. Bookplates in the form of an acrostic on the back of the first guard. Some very tiny friction on bookbinding and some spots on the edges like the other best, if not beautiful book.
