1768 Exemplary Novels of Spanish Cervantes Quixote Folkema Illustrated French 2v

A Amsterdam et a Leipzig : chez Arkstee & Merkus, 1768. - 1768 Exemplary Novels of Spanish Cervantes Quixote Folkema Illustrated French 2v “My genius and my inclination prompt me to this kind of writing; the more so as I consider (and with truth) that I am the first who has written novels in the Spanish language, though many have hitherto appeared among us, all of them translated from foreign authors. But these are my own, neither imitated nor stolen from anyone; my genius has engendered them, my pen has brought them forth, and they are growing up in the arms of the press.” Miguel de Cervantes, boasting of being the first to write novellas in Spanish. In 1613, when this collection of Spanish novellas was first printed, they were the most popular novellas of the time. Many of Cervantes’s novellas are still popular today, even though none of his work is as significant as ‘Don Quixote.’ These short stories would inspire many English dramas especially Middleton and Fletcher. This rare French two-volume edition was translated by Chassonville Saint Martin, according to the Cervantes Collection Catalogue. It also includes charming illustrated engravings by Jacob Folkéma and a “Life of the author”. Even though the plates are mentioned in the preface of the text volume, they are rarely found together. All the plates are brightly coloured and remarkably fresh and lively, evoking the beauty of the African landscape and the culture of the Xhosa. He successfully kept the peace between Xhosas, Khoisan and European colonists, but conflicts flared up soon after he left in 1806. He describes the situation and climate of Caffria, as well as the appearance and physical strength of the Xhosa, but mainly focuses on their culture.Ad 1: small tear in the text leaf of atlas, but restored, plates fine except for a tiny blemish on the first plate; ad 2: slightly browned, and recased, as noted; ad 3; some sentences marked in pencil the margins and an occasional annotation, plates slightly browned and binding rubbed along the extremities. The first illustrated edition was published in 1742, itself containing five fig. unsigned. All editions of this novel seem uncommon. The title page does not contain the name of the author. Fashion exotic stories added a first title that is not found in other editions, which could be confused with this work of Claude-François Lambert: The Sicilian unfortunate, or memories and adventures of the Countess Carini (1743 ). Absent Cohen (books fig. Eighteenth). Full Calf blond contemporary. Smooth back decorated. Part of title in red morocco, and volume number in brown calf. Nice copy. The novel begins with a brief history of Sicily which places his destiny under the sign of the tragedy.

Fine. Saillant et Desaint, à Paris 1768, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in-4 (25x33,5cm), (1f.) (2f. de faux-titre et titre) (1f. tit. fr.) (XXIXp.) (1p.) et (1f. priv.) 337 pp. et (1f.) (2f. de faux-titre et titre) 280pp., deux volumes reliés. - The first edition, frontispiece by de Sève engraved by de Launay and 180 plates (with numerous life-size figures) admirably rendered after drawings by Claude Aubriet, Madeleine-Françoise Basseporte engraved by Catherine Haussard, Charles Milsan, Herisset, and so on. Two bound volumes. Contemporary light brown speckled calf. Spine in six compartments with frames and gilt fleurons, title and volume labels in light brown and red morocco. Covers with gilt triple fillet frame. Large gilt dentelle frame inside covers. Double gilt fillets to edges of covers, all edges gilt. Discreet and skillful repairs to head and foot of joints and head- and tail-pieces. A few pages lightly and uniformly browned, but otherwise a very good and fresh copy with good margins. This remarkable and very notable work stands out in two respects : firstly, that of the illustrations, which are very finely executed and secondly, the fundamental theoretical work of Duhamel du Monceau. It served as reference work and manual, the author demarcating the differences between gardeners' varieties and naturalists' classifications. In his Treatise on Forests, Duhamel had already used the methods applied to fruit trees (replanting, pruning, and so on) to increase the number of species and preserve forests; methods he had spent a great deal of time experimenting with on his family estates, along with his brother. The engravings show only table fruits, along with a number of grafts and cuts. Almost 250 kinds of fruit are thus described (pears, prunes, apples, cherries, grapes, and so on). The work was done with the help of the Abbé Le Berriays, who provided a little over a third of the illustrations and a significant portion of the text. It's worth remembering that to all intents and purposes Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau is considered the founder of modern agronomy, being the first to describe and theorize the way that trees develop.

first edition. Bindings in full blond marble blond contemporary. Back with nerves adorned with nets. Red morocco, and black morocco. Shaped heads. Friction. Good copy. The introduction tells the story of the ancient Turks until the founding of the Ottoman Empire. Parallel to Ottoman history, and even often opposite, the book gives the history of the contemporary princes of Eastern Europe (Hungary, Poland, Russia) and Asia. They would all be part of the same stock, of the same origin, Tartars and Huns. In addition, paintings enable us to embrace the history of Europe, the Turks and Asia. In his short preface, the author defends himself from all dryness, having punctuated his accounts of notes and anecdotes on manners and customs, and endeavoring to render the accumulation of facts and events in the form of narratives. Attached is an explanation of the Turkish words used in the book. In short, a judicious and precise compilation, seeking to embrace the history of a people and its place in the history of the world. The juxtaposition of contemporary histories makes it possible to approach a certain understanding of the march of a people tied closely to its sovereigns. With the same plan and 2 plates as ad. 2, also coloured by a contemporary hand. Contemporary gold-tooled calf, richly gold-tooled spine.

Bobins collection 68; Gay 3153 (text only); Mendelssohn I, p. 17-18; Landwehr, Coloured plates 217-218. Very rare album with four beautiful hand-coloured aquatint views to Alberti's ethnographic monograph on the Xhosa people ("Kaffers"), of South Africa, together with both the first edition, in Dutch, as the first edition of the French translation of this monograph. Even though the plates are mentioned in the preface of the text volume, they are rarely found together. All the plates are brightly coloured and remarkably fresh and lively, evoking the beauty of the African landscape and the culture of the Xhosa. Lodewyk Alberti (1768-1812) came to the Netherlands in 1784 as lieutenant in the Dutch army, and left for the Cape in 1802. Very good set.

Historia stirpium indigenarum Helvetiae inchoata.Berne, Societatis Typographicæ (colophon: [D.] Brunner & [Albrecht] Haller), 1768. 3 parts in 1 volume. Large folio (38 x 24 cm). With 47 folded engraved plates with 48 numbered illustrations of plants. With : ( 2) HALLER, Albrecht von. Nomenclator ex Historia plantarum idigenarum Helvetiae excerptus authore.Berne, Societatis Typographicæ (colophon: D. Brunner and Albrecht Haller), 1769. 8vo. Ad 1: contemporary mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spine. Ad 2: contemporary stiff sprinkled-paper wrappers.

Ad 1: Nissen, BBI 774; Stafleu & Cowan 2311; DSB VI, pp. 61-67, esp. 65-66; ad. 2: Pritzel 3726; Stafleu & Cowan 2312. First edition of Haller's famous flora of Switzerland, "a great monument of plant description" (Stafleu, Linnaeus and the Linnaeans, p. 246), "a model study of this thoroughly investigated area ... and illustrated ... with extraordinarily beautiful plates" (DSB), rare in such a well-preserved copy. Here accompanied by Haller's own list of 2490 Swiss plants with morphological features and references, taken with some amendments from the flora.Haller's journeys on foot through the Swiss countryside gave him a first-hand knowledge of the flora and the enormous variations in habitats. These observations influenced the present Historia stirpium indigenarum Helvetiae inchoata, which fulfils part of Haller's goal to create a complete, encyclopaedic science of Swiss flora. It contains not only a description of the plants but also of the ecology. Haller's interest in the role of variability and the difficulty in differentiating between varieties and species makes him a biosystematist avant la lettre. Ad 1: with the contemporary bookplate of Beat Rudolph von Tavel and marginal annotations in a contemporary hand. Very good copy with generous margins, with only minor marginal defects in a few leaves. Ad 2: manuscript owner's name, with the entries on the first 19 pages systematically annotated. Very good copy, wholly untrimmed, with most of the bolts unopened. A lovely copy in a contemporary binding of an important botanical work, with the plates in fresh impressions.

Peter Simon Pallas (Berlin 1741-1811) studied medicine and natural history in Germany, Holland, and England. In 1767 he went to St Petersburg and began to conduct research in Russia. He was an eminent botanist, zoologist and geographer, and "sought to advance from merely describing nature to finding the causal interrelationships and hidden regularities of natural phenomena." Darwin acknowledged his work to have been influential in the development of evolutionary ideas ( DSB ).In the years 1768 to 1774 Pallas joined so-called "academic expeditions" which traversed the Russian Empire from west to east. He studied flora and fauna, landscape, geological condition, local population and culture. His findings were published in Reise durch verschiedenen Provinzen des russischen Reichs (3 volumes, St Petersburg 1771-1776). The French translation of the work appeared in five volumes and one atlas-volume, 1788-1793. The present nouvelle édition , revised by Lamarck and Langlès, comprises eight text-volumes and one atlas volume with maps and plates.       Paris, [Academie des Sciences], 1768-1779. Two volumes in three. Folio (43.0 x 28.0 cm). xviii, xiii, 1,612, 44 pp.; 77 fine engraved plates of which three double-sized. Plate numbering: I-XIII, I-LV, LVI-1, LVII-1, LVIII, LVIII*, XXXIV-2, XXXIV-3, XXXIX[bis], LVI-2, LVII-2 (XXVIII corrected to 31). Contemporary uniform full mottled calf. Spines with six raised bands. Compartments with gilt floral designs and two morocco labels with gilt title and volume number. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt.l Rare and important monograph on coal-mining, and the mining of other fossil fuels by French medical doctor, chemist and geologist Jean François Clément Morand (1726-1784), and published in the series of "Description des Arts et Métiers" and a forerunner of the famous Encyclopédie of Diderot et d'Alembert, and the Encyclopédie Méthodique. The work deals with the different kinds and qualities of coal, the geographical distribution of coal bearing deposits, the methods of mining and mining equipment, the economical value, fossils found in coal layers, etc. etc. No subject seems to be left untouched and all possible information on coal mining up to the end of the 18th century is found in these volumes. Among the plates we find two very fine plates of the "Appret du Charbon de Terre pour le chauffage" by Fessard which depict a very early usage of coal-bricks for heating. The two text volumes are rather arbitrarily divided in part 1 plus part 2(1-3), and from part 2(4) onwards, to create two volumes of approximately the same width. Some rubbing to boards and spines. Rebacked, The fore edge margin has some waterstaining, varying from hardly noticeable in many sections to rather strong in some. The armorial bookplates of Richard d'Aubigny and of G. C. Greenwell on the front paste-down. A good set. Brunet II, 618; Ward and Carozzi, 1607.

Bound with: Of the Origin and Progress of a New Science. Paris: Firmin Didot, Cocheris, Nepveu, Dalnce, 1808.

London and Paris: Desaint, 1768 - 3 works bound in one volume, octavo (194 x 120 mm). Late 19th or early 20th-century half calf and marbled boards, spine decorated gilt in compartments, morocco labels, marbled edges and endpapers. Lower portion of the manuscript title to the second work cut away, presumably removing the translator's name; a very fine copy. Engraved armorial bookplate of Alexis and Elizabeth du Pont of Rencourt to front pastedown. First edition of undoubtedly one of the scarcest of Dupont's works, and probably one of the most successful publications promoting physiocracy. This copy has leaf B1 in the rare, uncancelled state. Schumpeter, in his discussion on the physiocrats, calls Dupont "by far the ablest of the lot" (p. 226) and Palgrave notes; "If Quesnay was the father of physiocracy, Dupont was its godfather, for he gave it its name by the publication of his Physiocratie. a collection of Quesnay's articles, which the editor introduced by a Discours." Bound with this copy is a previously unrecorded English translation of the work, written most probably by Pierre Samuel Du Pont (1870-1954), possibly with the assistance of his cousin by marriage Bessie Gardner Du Pont. It must date to the end of the nineteenth century, or the very beginning of the twentieth, since the volume contains the bookplate of Alexis Du Pont, who died in 1904. It is written in a neat, cursive hand and comprises 251 pages. A modern English translation, only published in 2003 by Liberty Fund, was prepared by Henry H. Clark, who makes no mention of this earlier translation. He describes Dupont's work as "arguably the clearest, most concise introduction to the full range of Physiocratic thinking on the nature of an enlightened, interdependent, exchange-based economy and its moral and political implications." Bound in at the end of the volume is a copy of the first edition of Dupont's Irénée Bonfils, sur la religion de ses pères et de nos pères, Du Pont's confession of religious belief free of dogma and sectarianism, by way of recalling the fate of many of his most ancient ancestors who suffered death as heretics. All religions that devote themselves wholly to the ethical mandates of God are equal. Sectarianism and the crimes it spawns have no legitimacy. This appeared in an English translation published in 1947, made by Pierre S. du Pont, with the assistance of Bessie Gardner Du Pont.

- To fight against the powerful English fleet, king Louis XIV decided to endow his ships with nautical charts that could enable them to compete with the enemy. The Neptune Francais, in 1693, can be considered a first attempt, but it was only at the beginning of the Eighteenth century that a campaign of study of the Mediterranean coasts and sea was started, leading to the realization of maps, collected in the Dépot des Cartes et Planes de la Marine in 1720. Nevertheless, the real founder of French hydrography can be considered Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), who served for more than fifty years the navy as engineer and cartographer, which win him first the title of "Hydrographer Engineer of the Navy" and then of "Royal Hydrographer". His first commitment was to study the French coasts fisrt, and then of the whole world. His production was massive and his nautical charts, due also to their quality, were published in many edition until the end of the XVIII century. This allowance led to the production and the selling of sea charts, at first based on those from Bellin, then developed by other navy engineers. The sea charts were sold separately, all bearing the stamp with the anchor and the crowns of the Depot Generale de la Marine. Collections of the same charts have been published under the name of Neptune Francois, a monumental work which has been reissued many times until the half of the following century. The following group of charts is taken from a volume entitled Neptune de la Méditerranée, about the Mediterranean sea. Where possible, there is the name of the cartographer, very often the captain of the ship, and the date of the chart. Map of Ligury, with part of Provence and Tuscany. Contemporay outline colour.         1768 1st ed Account of Corsica James Boswell Genoa Pasquale Paoli HUGE MAP

Glasgow : Printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis for Edward and Charles Dilly, London, 1768. First edition. - 1768 1st ed Account of Corsica James Boswell Genoa Pasquale Paoli HUGE MAP “First edition of James Boswell’s book supporting the Island of Corsica’s defense of invasion and desire to be free form Genoese rule., and accounts of his befriending Pasquale Paoli” A rare first edition of James Boswell’s “Account of Corsica”. According to Lowndes, this printing is the “first and uncastrated edition”. This book was the work that gained Boswell fame. He supported the Corsican government and took “childish pleasure in being the chief sponsor of this wild island struggling to become a nation” (Cox I, 138). According to Pierce, "Following the island's invasion by France, in 1768, Boswell attempted to raise public awareness and rally support for the Corsicans. He sent arms and money to the Corsican fighters, and made an arduous and dangerous journey to Corsica to meet General Pasquale Paoli, leader of the insurgents seeking the island's independence from the Genoese. Paoli at first suspected [Boswell] was a spy, but quickly came to like his improbable young visitor, saw an opportunity for promotion of the Corsican cause in Britain, and consented to a series of interviews ” The book includes his observations of government, religion, military arms, commerce, education, and Boswell’s experiences while traveling through Corsica. This most-popular second state includes “very rare half-title” (Rothschild 442), a beautiful copper vignette on title, and a large folding copper map of the island of Corsica. This work was widely read and translated – 7000 copies, in two editions, were sold within the first month of completion. "The Account of Corsica was the book of the hour. Many more copies of it were sold in Boswell's lifetime than either of his great works in the biography of Johnson, and it achieved abroad a much more remarkable success."         John Hancock Signature.

Signature of John Hancock. Signed, "Your most hum Sevt, John Hancock Presid.," on an off-white 3.5 inch by 1 inch slip clipped from a letter. Matted and framed with a portrait of Hancock. The entire piece measures 10.75 inches by 13.25 inches. In excellent condition with a few creases signature and some mild toning. Rare and desirable. John Hancock was an American merchant, statesman, and prominent Patriot of the American Revolution. He served as president of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He is remembered for his large and stylish signature on the United States Declaration of Independence, so much so that the term "John Hancock" has become, in the United States, a synonym for a signature. Before the American Revolution, Hancock was one of the wealthiest men in the Thirteen Colonies, having inherited a profitable mercantile business from his uncle. Hancock began his political career in Boston as a protege of Samuel Adams, an influential local politician, though the two men later became estranged. As tensions between colonists and Great Britain increased in the 1760s, Hancock used his wealth to support the colonial cause. He became very popular in Massachusetts, especially after British officials seized his sloop Liberty in 1768 and charged him with smuggling. Although the charges against Hancock were eventually dropped, he has often been described as a smuggler in historical accounts, but the accuracy of this characterization has been questioned. Hancock was one of Boston's leaders during the crisis that led to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War in 1775. He served more than two years in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, and as president of Congress, was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. Hancock returned to Massachusetts and was elected governor of the Commonwealth, serving in that role for most of his remaining years. He used his influence to ensure that Massachusetts ratified the United States Constitution in 1788.
