Codex Principis Olim Laurishamensis Abbatiae Diplomaticus ex aevo maxime carolingico diu multumque desideratus.

Akademische Verlagshandlung C. F. Winter - Editit recensuit et praefata est Academie Elect. Scient. et Elegant. Lit. Theodoro-Palatina. Tomus Primus + Tomus Secundus MDCCLXVIII. Tomus Tertius MDCCLXX. Bände 1 + 2 in einem Band: 15 Bl., 622 S.; 6 Bl., 644 S. auf Bütten, HPgt. d. Z., Rücken abgeplatzt, Buchblock sehr ordentlich u. sauber.

The work was widely read and translated, stimulated great interest in Paoli and the Corsican cause, brought its author wide fame in Britain and Europe, and found an interested readership among the Americans...Boswell left behind a window on them all, and a record of his times, unrivalled in detail, accuracy, and social range."         EHON KAGAMI GUSA 2 vols.

1768 - [EHON] Kitao SHIGEMASA. EHON KAGAMI GUSA 2 vols. 21.5 x 15.4 cm. Original flower-printed covers with original printed title labels. N.D., printed by Nishimura Genroku. A book with the same title (but written with differfent Kanji) is cited in KSSM as published in Meiwa 5 [1768] but from a different publisher and in three volumes. The Nishimura Genroku catalogue at the end of our volume 2 lists the current book EHON KAGAMI GUSA (with the proper Kanji) as complete in 2 volumes. One might assume that this work is actually a different work from the one which appears in the KSSM with the same (pronunciation of the) title by Shigemasa, as another work advertised by Genroku in the book catalogue at the end of our volumes as "to be printed soon" actually appeared in the late 1780s. So, I would date this volume as appearing in the late 1780s, when Shigemasa was in his 40s, rather than much earlier in his career. A lovely book on a small scale populated with historical and contemporary figures with an innocence and a "look" reminiscent of Sukenobu. Slight internal soiling, good sumi-e impressions throughout. Internally complete collation. Obviously very scarce and interesting, especially as this is the Bing collection copy.

Dennie (1768-1812), a staunch Federalist, founded the important literary and political journal the Port Folio. Contemporary notation on titlepage, minor loss to top outer corner, slightly affecting one letter. Light foxing, otherwise very good. Second Philadelphia edition, printed the same year as the first.

Paris, Saillant & Desaint, 1768. 2 volumes. Large-4to (330 x 245mm). pp. (4), xxix, (3), 337; (4), 280, with engraved frontispiece and 180 engraved plates. Contemporary full calf, richly gilt decorated spines with 2 red gilt lettered labels, gilt edges. A fine copy of the first edition. The beautifull illustrations (after drawings by Aubriet, Basseporte, and Le Berriays) show an enormous variety of peaches, apples, prunes, stawberries, nuts, pears, vines, etc. in clear and strong impressions. Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1781), the famous French dendrologist, worked a.o. on animal and vegetable physiology. His botanical work may be regarded as the inception of forest botany. The above offered work was of great importance and is one of the finest and rarest books on fruits. According to this importance, a second and third edition appeared in 1782 and 1835; both with plain plates. The much augmented edition (by Poiteau & Turpin) with 422 coloured-printed plates was practically a new work.//"The outcome was 'Traité des arbres fruitiers....', Paris, 1768, in two quarto volumes with 180 engraved plates. Numerous cultivars of 16 fruit species are first characterized in Latin, then thoroughly described in French. Many illustrated in foliage, fruit, blossom, and seed. An engraved fruit-laden frontispiece carries the title 'Pomona gallica'... Du Hamel's dedication was admirable. In 1765, to describe just one cultivar, he rode 60 kilometers and back to view the original tree and fruit of the 'Bézi de Chaumontel' pear, which Merlet had seen and declared a novelty in 1675"(Janson, 'Pomona's Harvest' p. 290-293).//Nissen BBI, 550; Great Flower Books p. 55; Stafleu & Cowan 1546; Dunthorne 109;.         Poems by Mr. Gray.

      - Gray, Thomas. Poems by Mr. Gray. Robert & Andrew Foulis, Printers to the University, Glasgow: 1768. The 1st Scottish edition, published the same as the first London, published by Dodsley. 4to, (6) 64pp, uncut, printed on laid paper. Bookplate of James Milliken Esq. of Milliken. Some margins slt. dusty. Later rebind in a plain black full calf with "Poems by Mr. Gray" in a gilt lined box on the front. Faint early pencil sketch on the back free endpaper. Gray (1716-71) English poet, "He excelled his contemporaries in meticulous workmanship and in ability to use new materials--medieval Welsh or Scandinavian--with dramatic imaginative power." Baugh. "His enthusiasm had been roused by the fragments of Gaelic poetry published by Macpherson in 1760. He did his best to believe in their authenticity and found himself in rather uncongenial alliance with Hume, whose skepticism was for once quenched by his patriotism. Gray's interest probably led him to his imitations from the Norse and Welsh. In 1767 Dodsley proposed to republish his poems in a cheap form. Foulis, a Glasgow publisher, made a similar proposal through Beattie at the same time. Dodsley's edition appeared in July 1768, and Foulis's in the following September. Both contained the same poems, including the Fatal Sisters, the Descent of Odin, and the Triumphs of Owen, then first published. Gray took no money, but accepted a present of books from Foulis." DNB. The work is based on Le Mercier de la Rivière's L'Ordre naturel et essentiel des Sociétés politiques (with which it is here bound), which Adam Smith referred to as "the most distinct and best connected account of this doctrine". Schumpeter, in his discussion on the physiocrats, calls Dupont "by far the ablest of the lot" (p. 226) and Palgrave notes; "If Quesnay was the father of physiocracy, Dupont was its godfather, for he gave it its name by the publication of his Physiocratie... a collection of Quesnay's articles, which the editor introduced by a Discours.

The Americans demonstrated this beyond a doubt, the legislature was convinced, and judiciously gave it up. The Americans never opposed with violence any act of our legislature which was strictly constitutional? If there never was such opposition in America, it is plain the Americans never were rebels; and if not rebels, why should they be treated as such?...
