[Murner the Ghost Kittie - a Gothic Tale]. Murner in der Hölle. Ein scherzhaftes Heldengedicht. Neue verbeserte Auflage. TOGETHER WITH: Aelurias epos iocosum

Rostock and Braunschweig, 1767 and 1767. Ad 1: Rostock: Koppe, 1767. 4to. 42 pp. With an engraved title-vignette, 8 woodcut headpieces, and one engraved tailpiece (Murner's urn). Recent marbled boards, edges uncut. Text a little browned, but the paper is strong. Ad 2: Braunschweig: Impensis Orphanotrophei ("Orphanage Press), 1771. 8vo. xii, 64pp. With an engraved frontispiece, title vignette, one engraved vignette in the text and one engraved tailpiece. vignettes in the text. Later half calf, coloured paper boards, gilt. Rubbed, with surface loss to spine, joints cracked, some light soiling. Hinges starting, bookplate to FEP, leaves toned, small burn-hole to bottom margin of E, not touching text. Ad 3: Chez Dubois, Pere et Fils, Libraires, Genève et Paris 1774 We know of no other 18th-century German Gothic Tales which involve Ghost Kitties. "Murner in Hell" is a highly curious, and very amusing poem in heroic hexameter which relates the story of Murner the Ghost Kittie, who having been killed whilst attacking a caged canary haunts his owners for failing to properly inter his corpse. "Murner in Hell" has nothing to do with Thomas Murner (1475-ca. 1537) but is a travesty on Book XI of the Odyssey, in which Elpenor pleads for Odysseus to bury his body. In the present Gothic Tale, Murner the cat haunts the whole house until his corpse is buried. That we have been able to secure editions in the original German and the Latin translation is remarkable. Both are of further interest on account of their unique and marvelous illustrations. Neither edition is currently available on the market, and according to Worldcat, there is NO COPY IN AMERICA of either edition. Ad 1 (German): NO COPY IN AMERICA (?) -- the title vignette depicts the Ghost Kittie in Hell (Cocytus) aboard Acheron's boat, tormented by Cerberus the three-headed Dog (see p. 30 in the text). The engraved tailpiece shows Murner's urn. Ad 2 (Latin): NO COPY IN AMERICA (?) -- the frontispiece presents the scene of the crime, in which the canary's bird-cage is knocked onto the floor and the Ghost-Kittie is crushed by it and the weight of the Baron, who lies on top. The Latin translation was prepared by Benedictus Christianus Avenarius, who also translated the "Fabulae Aliquot" of various authors which appear on pp. 55-64. Translated into English, the beginning of the first Canto is written: "Sing, smiling Muse! Sing the great heroic deeds and the miserable death of an immortal Cat; he passed the black banks of Cocytus; and his bones, as those of other heroes, were entombed in marble." (Included in the present offering is an English translation of the German text). ADB XLIV, 634-641. See Goedeke IV, 71, 5; 8; 9.

L'Homme Sauvage, Histoire traduite de... .

Amsterdam: Chez Zacharie, 1767. Duodecimo; contemporary French mottled calf gilt, spine banded and gilt, crimson label. A very attractive copy of the first edition: the "noble savage" in the Americas, and an important work in the French utopian tradition.Mercier (1740-1814) was a prominent French dramatist, and one of the first playwrights of drame bourgeois. He wrote over sixty plays, ranging in style from light social comedy to radically anti-monarchical treatises. Unsurprisingly considering the title of the present work, he was heavily influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, earning himself the rather scathing sobriquet 'Le Singe de Jean-Jacques.' Imprisoned briefly during the Terror, he was released after the death of Robespierre.Although it was his later work L'an Deux Mille Quatre Cent Quarante which led to him being called the 'father of the modern utopia', this work is an earlier example of Mercier's engagement with the theme. Long thought to be a direct translation of Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Pfeil's novel Der Wildemann it is now considered likely that much of it is Mercier's own work. The novel is largely a first-person narration by Zidzem, the noble savage of the title, of an idealised world in Peru: 'Je suis né parmi les Chébutois, peuple du Sud de l'Amerique; peuple long-tems illustre & vainqueur'. A fine copy.

MADAGASCAR Ð ANANTSON?O (ST. AUGUSTINÕS BAY): A CHART OF ST. AUGUSTIN'S BAY, ON THE ISLAND MADAGASCAR AS SURVEYED BY WM. NICHELSON, (MASTER OF HIS MAJESTY'S SHIP ELIZABETH) IN THE YEAR 1758.

London [] 1767 - Copper engraving (Very Good, some professional restoration to centrefold, some very light transfer shadowing, otherwise a strong engraving impression and wide original margins), 63 x 91.5 cm (25 x 36 inches). Very rare Ð the first edition of Captain William NichelsonÕs masterly large-format sea chart of St. AugustinÕs Bay, Madagascar, a key harbour on the Mozambique Channel, along the route between Europe and India, first issued in the 1767 edition of William HerbertÕs important atlas, ÔA New Directory for the East IndiesÕ. This extremely rare and excellent sea chart depicts St. AugustinÕs Bay (Malagasy: Anantson?o), an excellent natural harbour along the southwestern coast of Madagascar (immediately to the south of the modern day city of Toliara), that was for centuries a key waypoint for ships making the navigation between Europe and India, and beyond, to Southeast Asia and the Far East. The chart was drafted by William Nichelson, the Master of the HMS Elizabeth, a virtuous maritime surveyor who was responsible for several important charts of harbours in Africa and Asia. The present map was first issued within the 1767 (third) edition of William HerbertÕs A New Directory for the East Indies, a very rare and historically important British sea atlas of Oriental navigation. This large chart captures the bay from a southward-oriented perspective, with the Mozambique Channel on the right. The nautical information is extremely detailed, with numerous bathymetric soundings, and other aspects identified by symbols described in the ÔReferencesÕ at the top of the chart. Of great importance are the locations of recommended anchorages and the watering place, at the mouth of the river. Several navigational sightlines connect to four coastal profile views along the shore, while the ÔRemarksÕ, in the upper right, grant detailed sailing directions into the bay. Historical Context St. AugustinÕs Bay was perhaps the finest natural anchorage along the Madagascar side of the Mozambique Channel. Since the passage was traversed by Europeans for the first time by Vasco da Gama, in 1498, during the first European sea voyage to India around Africa, it has been one of the most important shipping lanes in the world. While sheltered from the open Indian Ocean, it was a very dangerous passage, as it featured difficult winds and currents, along with several especially tricky nautical hazards. Beyond that, it also left ships vulnerable to attacks by pirates or vessels of enemy nations, and a lack of knowledge of the navigation ensured that one would become easy prey. Since 1540 most of Madagascar had been ruled by the Merina Dynasty. However, the Merina kingdom was based in the interior and exacted tenuous authority over many of the coastal areas. While Europeans did not gain firm rule over the the island until the late 19th Century, the English, Dutch and French had a fleeting presence along its coasts. Most notably, during the late 17th and early 18th Centuries, the Isle of St. MaryÕs (Nosy Boraha), located off of north-western Madagascar, become the worldÕs most consequential pirate base, at times hosting the likes of William Kidd and John Avery. Having grown rich from raiding East Indies shipping, it is even rumoured that the pirates declared the establishment of their own outlaw republic of ÔLibertaliaÕ on the island. From the 1720s onwards, the various national navies had largely succeeded in subduing the pirates, however, shipping remained vulnerable to isolated attacks. Importantly, the present chart was the finest chart of the bay available upon the advent of the First Anglo-Maratha War (1775Ð1782), which in the Indian Ocean Basin bled into the international conflict between Britain and France that was part of the American Revolutionary War (1775-83, with the Franco-British conflict lasting from 1778 to 1783). Thus, this chart would have been of particular interest to officers of Royal Navy vessels and British merchant mariners who had to nimbly

PIRATES / MADAGASCAR: [2 CHARTS ON 1 SHEET:] AMBODIFOTATRA, NOSY BORAHA ISLAND (ÎLE SAINTE-MARIE) AND ANTONGIL BAY: A PLAN OF THE PRINCIPAL HARBOUR & TOWN, OF THE ISL. S. MARIES, LAYING OF THE EAST COAST OF THE ISL. MADAGASCAR IN LAT. 17º 00'S. [AND] THE.

London 1767 - Copper engraving (Good, tiny portions of neatline in both upper corners professionally reinstated with facsimile, portion of blank left margin and most of blank lower margin professionally reinstated with miniscule loss to part of engravers’ imprint, otherwise steller with strong engraving impression), 46.5 x 61 cm (18.5 x 24 inches). Very Rare – two charts of Madagascar harbours on a single sheet, presenting the famed pirate base of St. Mary’s Harbour and Antongil Bay, from William Herbert’s magnificent sea atlas, ‘A New Directory for the East Indies’. This very rare map sheet features two charts of key harbours along the north-eastern coast of Madagascar, being the harbour of Île Sainte-Marie, one of the world’s legendary pirate haunts, and Antongil Bay, the largest inlet along the coasts of Madagascar. The finely engraved composition first appeared within the 1767 (third) edition of William Herbert’s A New Directory for the East Indies, an important sea atlas made at the behest of the British East India Company (EIC). The first chart, which occupies the left-hand side of the sheet, features the harbour of Île Sainte-Marie commonly called in English, St. Mary’s, which in Malagasy is named Ambodifotatra (town), Nosy Boraha (island). The narrow 60-kilometre-long island lies just off of the north-western coast of Madagascar, with the harbour being located along its south-eastern side. In the late 17th and early 18th Centuries, the harbour of Île Sainte-Marie was the world’s leading pirate base, in the wake of the destruction, due to an earthquake, of the famous corsair haunt of Port Royal, Jamaica, in 1692. Beginning with the arrival of Adam Baldridge in 1685, the Île aux Forbans (‘Island of Pirates’) hosted a pirate village, being the island that sits prominently in the middle of the inner harbour, presented on the chart. The sheltered location, placed near the shipping lanes that connected Europe and India, and points further east, was ideal for preying upon vessels heavily laden with precious, metals, gems, spices and fine textiles. Over the coming years, the Île aux Forbans was home to several of the most notorious corsairs, including William Kidd, Henry Avery, Olivier Levasseur, Robert Culliford, Thomas Tew and Abraham Samuel. Having grown rich from raiding East Indies shipping, it is even rumoured that the pirates declared their own outlaw republic of ‘Libertalia’ on the island. However, by the 1720s onwards, the British, French and Portuguese navies had largely subdued the pirates, although shipping would continue to be svulnerable to isolated attacks. Nevertheless, this fine natural harbour remained of interest to mariners as a re-victualling base, and was watched with caution by European naval powers, lest it, once again, became a haunt for corsairs. Travelling forward to the present time, the harbour of Île Sainte-Marie has returned to global news headlines, upon the reports that the famous pirate ship hunter Barry Clifford had found a wreck in the harbour that was supposedly Captain Kidd’s ship, the Adventure, along with the salvaging of a 55 kg (121 lb) ‘silver’ ingot, believed to be part of the legendary pirate’s lost treasure. However, his finds have since become mired in controversy, as many authorities, led by UNESCO, have countered that Clifford’s ‘wreck’ was simply harbour construction refuse and that the ingot was simply a silver-coated chunk of lead! Nevertheless, many still believe and hope that the harbour will someday give up vast, verifiable riches! Beyond that, much evidence of the pirate colony survives today on the Île aux Forbans, including the world’s largest pirate cemetery. The chart depicts the harbour of Île Sainte-Marie in great detail, including much nautical information, with the ‘References’, in the lower-left, labelling major details: A. The Town on a Small Island; B. A Small Island on which the Inhabitants keep Cattle for Market; C. The Watering Place; D. A Large Rock seem coming from the

Lisbon: Officina de Miguel Manescal da Costa, 1767-68. Contemporary calf (rebacked).. Some faint staining in Vol. I.. First edition of this weighty and influential book which attacked the Jesuits. Its repercussions resounded throughout Europe, fuelling anti-Jesuit hatred and even criticising the Papacy for its complacency and tolerance of the Order. Though edited by José de Seabra da Silva, it was probably written mainly by the Marquis of Pombal, who argued that the Jesuits had been responsible for Portugal's decline, in the fields of commerce, education, and naval power, that their influence in political power was malevolent, and that they had created discord between the Crown and the church, between the King and his subjects. The book was rapidly translated into Spanish, Latin, French and Italian. Innocêncio II, 130 (lengthy note) & V, 121. Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 808. Palha 2523, "ouvrage estimé." Rodrigues 2224-2226. Welsh 1428.

Lalande, 497 ; Poggendorff I-635 ; DBF XII-1003.

Paris, Regnard, 1767. - Sextodecimo (16mo). Contemporary gilt half calf with marbled boards and title lable to spine. 328 pp., 3 ff., title with a decent contemporary owner’s stamp on verso (very difficult to read, but clearly of french origin). Minor wears to the spine’s extremeties, but in fine condition. First edition, posthumously published.         Manuscript lunar charts with movable parts). - Two manuscript charts on lunar astronomy with mounted and movable parts of the moon’s passage through the Pleiades at New Year’s Eve, 1767, and another from the same hand of the partial lunar eclipse on January, 4th 1768, both as seen from Leipzig. Obviously manufactured during the observations in Leipzig, Saxony.

Saxony, 1767-68. - Black ink on recto and verso of two strong cardboards. Measurements: 23 x 22 cm (partial lunar eclipse) and 20,5 x 27 cm (moon’s passage through the Pleiades). Corners minorily bumped, lightly browned in places, but all together very well preserved especially for items that include movable parts for demonstrational purposes. A very unusual set of manuscript lunar charts, obviously drawn during the celestial occurences described and precisely measured on them. Unfortunately, they are unsigned and the authorship therefore remains unclear. The design of the charts, however, talks in favour of the author having been in a position enabling him to make use of elaborate astronomical instruments, and would that most probably not be the case if he was a privateer instead of a person, who by profession was connected to a university or an observatory: The charts bear normal captions as well as some which are mirror-inverted, clearly pointing towards that they had been manufactured (and later used for presentation) by the combination of an astronomical telescope and a projection instrument. The lunar motion shown on the front side of each one of the charts could so repeatedly be demonstrated for educational purposes and at the same time be compared with the time scales on the backside, simply by placing the charts between the viewer and a mirror, with the front side of the charts facing the mirror. 2000 g

A Voyage Round the World In His Majesty's Ship The Dolphin, Commanded by the Honourable Commodore Byron. ...London: J. Newbery and F. Newbery, 1767. First EditionBound with 3/4 marbled boards with a leather spine. 20x12 cm (8x4¾")Rare account of the circumnavigation of the British squadron under the command of John Byron, anonymously written but generally accepted as being written by Charles Clerke, who was later to sail on all three of James Cook's Pacific voyages. John Byron, grandfather of the poet Lord Byron, left Plymouth on the "Dolphin" in July 1764 and sailed via Rio de Janeiro and the Straits of Magellan to the Pacific to make discoveries in the South Seas. He "returned to England without losing one member of his crew, a rare event in those days. It is interesting to note that this narrative does not indicate the position of the newly discovered lands. These are left blank in the text in order to prevent other nations claiming the territory. This account ... became famous because of its description of the Patagonian giants.During the voyage, in 1765, Byron claimed possession of the Falkland Islands on behalf of the United Kingdom, nearly provoking a war with Spain. Condition: the book is in Good++ condition. Two of the three engraved plated are here - one of them is a repro that has been clipped and pasted on (see photos). The pages are aged toned, and the book is otherwise complete.
