The Surprising Life and Death of Doctor John Faustus. To which is now added, The Necromancer, or, Harlequin Doctor Faustus; As Performed at the Theatre Royal in Covent-Garden. Truly translated from the original Copies.

London: For H.W., 1766 - Duodecimo (144 x 86 mm), pp. 131, [1] bl. Contemporary "school" cloth, spine expertly repaired. Old stain, probably tallow, affecting the lower outer portion of the first dozen leaves, paper still sound, fore-edge margin a little close, a good copy. Apparently the first edition under this title (adding "Surprising"), although this immortal story appeared in English at last as early as 1592, as The Historie of the damnable Life, and deserved Death of Doctor John Faustus (where it is described as "Newly imprinted"), an edition which is often called The English Faust Book. The prose narrative of Faustus's adventures here gives many details omitted from Christopher Marlowe's play. Helen of Troy, for example, is reported to have borne him a son. The Necromancer, or Harlequin Doctor Faustus, was first performed in late 1723 and printed in various iterations in 1724. It was one of several successful musical entertainments in which John Rich (1692–1761), under the stage name Lun, performed the mute role of Harlequin. The addenda here, occupying the last 10 pages, is a truncated version, with two scenes set in a study and "The Doctor's School of Magick" respectively. This edition is institutionally rare, with three locations only in ESTC: University of Hull, Pierpont Morgan, and Yale. ESTC T147278.

First published in 1745, this book ‘L’ordre des Francs-Macons Trahi’ was the first book to reveal secrets, or ‘exposed’ rituals and rites that were exclusive to the Order of the Pug. Mops-Orden, or the ‘Order of the Pug,’ was a pseudo-Masonic sect established by the Catholic Church and was established to bypass various papal bulls. This sect allowed women to become members, barring that they were committed Catholics. This 1766 edition details the rites of freemasons as well as includes the text and music to several secret songs; songs not sung outside of secret meetings. The illustrations include plans of a freemason lodge as well as views of members at gatherings.          Golden Eagle

London 1766 - This originally hand-colored, folio bird engraving is from Thomas Pennant's "The British Zoology". The work was published in 1766 in London by J. and J. March. The drawings were by P. Paillou, G. Edwards, et. al. and the etchings by P. Mazell. --- Thomas Pennant was a leading naturalist in England in the 18th century. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and counted amongst his confidants Carl Linnaeus and Sir Joseph Banks. Pennant's work was noted as the first to publish color illustrations of birds in a work that attempted to describe all of the British species, many life-size. The mammals included in the work was also a rare occurance for an 18th century work. --- Overall Good to Very Good. There is light text offset. There may be a a few light marks to be expected with age, but most imperfections can be seen in the picture provided. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.

Son of the distinguished Genoese painter Giovanni Agostino Ratti, Carlo Giuseppe had studied in Rome with Placido Costanzi (1756-1759), and there became a close friend and follower of Anton Raphael Mengs and Johann Joachim Winckelmann, both of whom were formative influences on his interest in historiography, and his desire to reform and rejuvenate the Genoese artistic tradition through the academy.
