THE VICAR OF WAKEFIELD: A TALE. SUPPOSED TO BE WRITTEN BY HIMSELF

Printed by B. Collins, for F. Newbery, Salisbury 1766 - Two volumes. [4],214,[2 (blank)];[2],223,[1]pp. 12mo. Contemporary calf, rebacked to style with the original backstrips laid down. Contemporary bookplate in first volume (Walbancke); heavy offsetting from calf turn- ins to margins of endsheets, prelims and terminal leaves, upper quarter portion of binder's free endsheet in second volume torn away, a few signatures starting slightly, but a good set. Enclosed in a full morocco solander case by Riviere. First edition. The edition was burdened with a number of typographic errors or omissions (such as the omission of the word 'husband' in the first line of I:15, the misspelling 'Waekcfield' in the headline of II:95, etc), the most significant of which have been sorted into four variants. This set is of the second variant, with no catchword on I:213, with the corrected catchword on II:39, and page 159 correctly numbered. This edition printed in Salisbury precedes the first London printing by slightly over two months, although publication was some four years after the rights to the manuscript were sold to the publisher by Samuel Johnson on Goldsmith's behalf. The delay has been ascribed, variously, to Goldsmith's revisions, or to the publishers' reticence to commit to printing the work until Goldsmith had established a reputation. Over the next century, it became one of the most popular novels of its generation. GROLIER ENGLISH HUNDRED 53. ROTHSCHILD 1028. SCOTT 173ff. ESTC T146176. BLOCK, p.89. NCBEL II:1197.

Small 8vo: [10],360pp, with portrait frontispiece, engraved title-page, folding map and six full-page plates engraved by Bru hl (the 1741 first edition, published in Copenhagen, contained only 3 three plates in addition to the frontispiece). Contemporary dark brown mottled sheep, elaborately gilded spine sewn on five bands green and tan lettering pieces gilt, red paste-paper end papers, marbled edges. Spine rubbed with some loss of gilt, else an extremely pleasing and collectible copy of this satirical romance in the style of Gulliver's Travels by the father of Danish literature ("Holberg found Denmark with no books, and he wrote a library for her." Encyclopædia Britannica). Internally fine and bright with excellent plate impressions. Hoover 425. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1114. Gove, pp. 303-305; Stammhammer II, p. 171. Among utopian works, only Gulliver's Travels was more popular. According to Lewis (Utopian Literature, p. 92), Niels Klim is the first important fictional use of the astronomer Edmond Haley's theory (suggested in a paper published by the Royal Society in 1692) that the planets form an arrangement of concentric spheres surrounding the sun with openings at the poles through which access to hidden worlds is possible.         TABLEAU HISTORIQUE DE L'EXPEDITION DE L'INDE. POUR LE COMTE DE LALLY. CONTRE M. LE PROCUREUR GÉNÉRAL [caption title].

Paris. 1766. - 51pp. Large folio. Stitched. Minor soiling and foxing. Very good. Defense of the Comte de Lally for his actions in India during the Seven Years' War. This is one of two versions authored by him. Lally, head of the French expedition to India, reached Pondichery in 1758. Though capable, he was incredibly unpopular and fell into a series of events which proved fatal to his career and his person. He was unsuccessful in the Siege of Madras, beaten at the Battle of Wandiwash, and eventually capitulated from the siege of Pondichery. Taken prisoner by the British, he returned to France on parole and was imprisoned for two years before being put on trial and executed. This is his last defence, published shortly thereafter or perhaps immediately preceding - a publisher's note is dated April 14 and Lally was executed May 6th.

Exposé Succinct de la Contestation qui s'est Élevée entre M. Hume et M. Rousseau, avec les Pieces Justificatives.

Londres [i.e Yverdon]: [F.-B. de Félice],, 1766. Duodecimo (177 x 105 mm). Contemporary marbled wrappers, pages uncut. Contemporary ink notation on interior of front cover. Covers lightly marked, some light chipping to covers and a few pages, a few small ink marks on title page, loss to corner of p. 57 not affecting text, offset on final blank. Hume's account of his dispute with Rousseau was first published in Paris in October 1766. Two pirated editions followed later that year, the first of which was printed in London, the second of which, this edition, was printed in Yverdon and included extended commentary which had not been present in the previous editions. The work consists of "correspondence between Hume and Rousseau, with connecting narrative passages by Hume. Rousseau had maligned him so deeply, and the city gossips had filled out the tale so apocryphally, that Hume was stung into adopting this method of clearing himself. His friends, both English and French, at first advised against publication, but soon d'Alembert and his circle changed their minds and urged it." (Jessop). The book is rare in any state, and especially so in uncut state.

The Surprising Life and Death of Doctor John Faustus.

London: For H.W.,, 1766. To which is now added, The Necromancer, or, Harlequin Doctor Faustus; As Performed at the Theatre Royal in Covent-Garden. Truly translated from the original Copies. Duodecimo (144 x 86 mm), pp. 131, [1] bl. Contemporary "school" cloth, spine expertly repaired. Old stain, probably tallow, affecting the lower outer portion of the first dozen leaves, paper still sound, fore-edge margin a little close, a good copy. Apparently the first edition under this title (adding "Surprising"), although this immortal story appeared in English at last as early as 1592, as The Historie of the damnable Life, and deserved Death of Doctor John Faustus (where it is described as "Newly imprinted"), an edition which is often called The English Faust Book. The prose narrative of Faustus's adventures here gives many details omitted from Christopher Marlowe's play. Helen of Troy, for example, is reported to have borne him a son. The Necromancer, or Harlequin Doctor Faustus, was first performed in late 1723 and printed in various iterations in 1724. It was one of several successful musical entertainments in which John Rich (1692–1761), under the stage name Lun, performed the mute role of Harlequin. The addenda here, occupying the last 10 pages, is a truncated version, with two scenes set in a study and "The Doctor's School of Magick" respectively. This edition is institutionally rare, with three locations only in ESTC: University of Hull, Pierpont Morgan, and Yale.

Toning to the contents with an occasional ink stain. Some of incomplete issues are torn with half a page remaining. A few other almanacs have large tears and chips. The complete issues are in fair or better condition. The previous owner of these almanacs appears to be Benjamin Grobes (sp?). His name is found on several pages (although the spelling of the last name maybe incorrect). The name of Elizabeth Grobes (sp?) is also located inside the grouping. No locations of the Grobes found inside. An interesting collection of almanacs with hand written entries in the margins and on the blank sides of paper. Information recorded includes deaths of named people, marriages, activities, religious inscriptions, and some calligraphy. One entry, located in the bottom margin in the month of March 1763, reads - "Isaac Phillips shot himself the 29th of this month 1763". Another entry at the bottom margin of April 1762 states - "Our cart wheals ware maid April the day Seventeen Hundred & Sixty Two.
