HUME, David
1766. Original first edition, printed in Paris (not one of the counterfeits from the same year printed in London and Yverdon). 'In 1766 Hume was involved in a public controversy with Jean Jacques Rousseau. The controversial nature of Rousseau’s writings on the continent made him unwelcome there, and Hume arranged for him to take refuge in England. After Horace Walpole and other British literati humiliated Rousseau publicly, the Swiss philosopher accused Hume of participation and threatened to go public with the accusation. Hume responded pre-emptively by publishing a defence of his conduct along with correspondence relating to the affair. The work was translated into French by Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Suard (1734–1817); it was then re-translated back into English for a single publication in that language, as A Concise and Genuine Account of the Dispute between Mr. Hume and Mr. Rousseau. Prior to publication, King George III read the manuscripts. Hume sent the manuscripts to the British Museum, requesting that they be housed there, but “the curators did not think it proper to give them place” (Hume to Richard Penneck, October 29, 1767)' - A Bibliography of Hume's Writings and Early Responses, James Fieser, 17 (A), 4. Chuo 77. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 12mo, xiv, 127, pp., contemporary vellum, slightly marked, gilt spine lettering, unbrowned and only isolated spots, a nice copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SMOLLETT, TOBIAS
R. Baldwin, London, 1766. 211 x 132 mm. (8 3/8 x 5 1/8"). Two volumes. FIRST EDITION. Attractive contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, two brown morocco labels with gilt lettering, gilt-rolled edges. Pastedowns with the bookplate of William Constable, and with (presumably) his marginal pencil markings throughout, mostly in the form of short dashes, "X" marks, and the occasional notation. Very slight wear to joints and spine tops, a few small patches of lost patina from insect activity, trivial problems internally, but a fine unsophisticated copy, the bindings with no significant imperfections, and the text especially fresh and clean. From the author of popular picaresque novels "Roderick Ransom" and "Peregrine Pickle" comes this cavilling travelogue based on Smollett's 1763-65 sojourn in the south of France. Suffering from the consumption that had killed his teenage daughter and from grief at the death of his only child, Smollett (1721-71) was sent to the warm Mediterranean climate to recover his health. Within six months, he was feeling much better and his quick mind was casting about for amusement, so he decided to learn Italian and spend time travelling the region. Like so many of his fellow countrymen, he found "abroad" severely wanting in the niceties of life. Here he takes issue with the people, the customs, and the accommodations but, as DNB observes, "accounts of altercations with unhelpful natives are more than offset by the range of Smollett's observations-on climate, arts, religion, agriculture, hygiene, and trade-and by the practical concern underpinning ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

» (Biographie Universelle Michaud). It thoroughly covers many of the guarded secrets of Rosicurcians, masonic catechisms, obligations and duties of members of grand lodges, as well as notable signs and symbols. This first edition, like the editions that followed it, claims to be published in Jerusalem, according to the title page. AGRICULTURE.)
London: printed for G. Kearsley, 1766. Octavo (204 x 123 mm). Rebound in modern boards, printed paper label to front board, edges sprinkled red. A few blemishes to text and a few pages lightly creased, else a very good copy. First edition. The harvest of 1766 had been a poor one, leading to a rise in food prices and over 40 riots, by the count of that year's Annual Register. With much debate as to the appropriate response, the author of this anonymous tract argues against any form of price controls and interference with the free market, and criticises those who bow to mob pressure to do so. The treatise concludes: "It is found, by experience, that nothing encourages agriculture, and promotes plenty, so much as the utmost freedom in the trade of corn and every other article of common consumption". It is a fine defence of free trade in agriculture, written at the same time as similar arguments were being promoted in France by the physiocrats, and preceding Adam Smith's writings by a decade. The treatise is scarce in commerce, last recorded at auction in 1989. ESTC T110131; Higgs 3688. [Attributes: First Edition]

Pittsburgh - Business
1766. 8vo (8 inches tall), leather backed boards, well worn, but sturdily bound and intact, over 250 pp. of accounts: receipts, expenses, amounts due, orders, shipments, with dozens of attached receipts, promisory notes, bills, etc. The book documents the last years of mercantile and manufacturing concerns of John Jackson (1766-1826; born in Roscrea Ireland, moved to Pittsburgh in 1806, established himself as a manufacturer of soap, purveyor and shipper of bulk products (10 barrels of flour, for example); he died in December 1826 and his son, George Whitten Jackson (ca. 1800-1862), immediately took over. All accounts say that the business was not to George's liking and he soon sold the concern and went from there, very successfully, into the pork business, using Pittsburgh's new railways and its river system to transport large quantities of hog to the west and the south. There are a few pages from 1824-1826 that date from John Jackson's business, but the bulk of this book is the accounts and early business life of George W. Jackson as he expands his business prospects. In 1836, George married Mary Beard, and they and their children were central fixtures in Pittsburgh's early mercantile and social life. By 1837 George was on the board of directors of a mercantile bank and by 1845 he had a majority share in the first cotton mill in the Pittsburgh area. He expanded his pork business to have packing plants in Columbus and Cincinnati, etc. A terrific account book, documenting the business interests of an important early Pittsburgh business family.

New - Haven: Printed for John Hotchkiss and B. Mecom, 1766. First edition. 124 pp. Original full leather binding with new leather spine. Complete, though the title page is provided in facsimile. The first two leaves have sections missing, with repairs (see pics). All subsequent pages are complete and original, including the errata and the Catalogus section. An exceedingly scarce history of Yale, it was written by the earliest school official to be named President of Yale College (1740 - 1766), educator, and Congregational minister Thomas Clap (1703 - 1767). Although eventually forced to resign in 1765, because of political and theological conflicts with the Yale administration and the Connecticut Assembly, he would also be remembered for expanding the university, introducing new math, sciences, and philosophy classes, and for building and maintaining the first Orrery (a model of the Solar System) in the United States, among other things. His current work, arguably the grandest and most important of his writings, methodically chronicled the history of Yale College, from its very beginning in 1698 up until 1765. He also included chapters on the current, at the time, government of the university, its early instructors, benefactors, and graduates. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. [Attributes: First Edition]

Rivington, T Caslon, and R Withy, 1766. 8vo, pp [6, adverts], lvi, xxii, 304, [1], xlviii, iv, ii, iv,128, [6,index], separate title to second part, 2 engraved frontispieces including portrait in part 2, 14 engraved plates including music, engraved text illustrations, bound in contemporary calf, an early reback with raised bands, red label and fish ornament tooling, SECOND HAWKINS EDITION, an attractive and popular 18th century edition, this a re-issue of the 1760 printing of Thomas Hope with cancel title page. Though a common enough book this is a unique copy with three advertisement leaves at the front. One of these relates to books printed for R Withy, whose name appears in the imprint of this edition only and largely promotes, in some detail, a translation for Theevenot's 'The Art of Swimming' [1764, though no Withy edition is recorded], useful perhaps for the careless angler. JESUITS -
In Venezia, appresso Paolo Colombani, MDCCLXVI [ 1766]. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. 200; some soiling and browning in places, and light staining to final few leaves, but generally fresh; in contemporary carta rustica; a good copy. First edition of this uncommon and waspish account of a controversy which arose in Venice and Bergamo on the death of the priest Andrea Zucchi, a canon at Bergamo cathedral. Ostensibly about an inheritance dispute, the letters give a rare insight into the status of the Jesuits in enlightenment Italy, and into questions of temporal and religious jurisdiction and power. Although the Jesuits had been readmitted to the Venetian States in 1666, Bergamo maintained a ban on any transfer of goods to the Jesuits through bequests and inheritance. The Society had already lost one case after; the present case was contested by the parents of the Archpriest of Bergamo cathedral, after his will had left his property to the Jesuits, with the intention that they might set up a Jesuit college in Bergamo. The case was heard not in Bergamo, but in Venice, in front of the quarantia, who found in favour of the family, arguing that the Jesuits had no business trying to have the case heard in Venice, rather than in Bergamo where they knew they would lose. The letters describing this case are throughout satirical in tone, and accuse the Jesuits of "occult plots" and hunger for temporal goods. Of particular interest is the bizarre last letter, linking (with reference to Kepler and Maupertuis) the course of a recent comet to the role of the Jesuits as the Janissaries of the Chu … [Click Below for Full Description]
