George Frere
J.Dodsley. Printed in London in 1768, George Frere's scarce volume details the history of British settlement on the Caribbean island of Barbados. The book dates the island's discovery by the British to somewhere between 1615 and 1624 when a ship called 'The Olive' landed on the island on a return voyage from Guinea. It further states that in 1624, thirty crewmen from another British ship landed on the island and stayed to found a settlement. The book goes on to detail the growth of a large community of white settlers who in turn, felt it necessary to import larger and larger numbers of enslaved Africans to farm the land. The wavering fortunes of the British expatriots are detailed over the passage of time, with disputes with the British Crown over taxes and levies seemingly a regular feature. MONTRESOR (John).
London, A. Dury, 1768. [Click Below for Full Description]

Although respected as an intellectual and Latin scholar, Desbillons was best known for fables of his own invention, 170 of which are included in the present work. Frere, George
J.Dodsley, London. London, printed for J.Dodsley, 1768. First edition. 12mo. (viii), 121pp, [3]. A self-explanatory work detailing the history of British settlement on the Caribbean island of Barbados. The book dates the island’s discovery by the British to somewhere between 1615 and 1624 when a ship called ’The Olive’ landed on the island on a return voyage from Guinea. It further states that in 1624, thirty crewmen from another British ship landed on the island and stayed to found a settlement. Many of the exact records appear to have been lost in a fire at Bridgetown in 1668. The final two chapters describe the island’s constitution and government and its trade, soil and climate with some interesting detail on the importation and exportation of commodities. Bound in contemporary full calf boards. Sympathetically rebacked with gold lines tooled across the spine and a gold-lettered spine label. Minor rubbing to the binding. Front and rear flyleaves neatly creased. Title page slightly browned. Otherwise, a clean copy of a scarce work with the text block sound and the binding in good condition. 1768. Madrid. Broadside in plano (655 x 980 mm); ink and watercolour on paper, laid onto canvas, minor splits and cracks and overall a little darkened; integral wooden roller and case (c.1130 x 55mm closed). - A unique and attractive watercolour broadside depiction of the military and maritime armed forces of Spain in full pomp and splendor, representing the sweeping changes introduced under the wise leadership of Charles III of Spain, a reforming ruler, produce of the SpanishEnlightment, and partially due to the defeat in Havana in 1762. The broadside lists each of the regiments of the Spanish army, both infantry and cavalry, and includes illustrations for each of their respective uniforms. A smaller section, framed on both sides by an illustration of a ship of the line, lists the ships of the line, packet boats, frigates, gunboats, galleases, bomb ketches and xebecs in Charles III’s navy as well as provides a summary of Charles’ military forces. The regiments represented by 64 figures of infantrymen and 26 mounted cavalrymen in full attire, their coats, breeches, etc., appropriately coloured, in each case recording the name of the regiment and the number of battalions and of men, the navy represented by two men of war in full sail, a table at the foot recording the navy divided into 'navios', 'paquebotes', 'fragatas', 'bombardas', 'galeotas', 'brulotes' and 'xavecques', framing a 'resumen general' of the armed forces, in a border of lances, spears, canon, mortars, shot, etc. By 1768, as shown here, any damage wrought by Spain's participation in the Seve … [Click Below for Full Description]

STEARNS, Samuel
Boston: Printed and sold by Edes & Gill, 1768. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 'Edes & Gill's North American Almanack' was a short-lived 18th-century almanac that covered basic almanac information such as sunrise and sunset times, eclipses, phases of the moon, etc. However, this particular almanac is notable for the inclusion of Pennsylvania Governor Benjamin Fletcher's 1692 commission to English royals William and Mary, one of America's founding charters (Wakelyn), also known as the Massachusetts Bay Charter. A fascinating piece of pre-Constitution Americana with references to Plymouth, Portsmouth, and Cape Cod in the section on distances between principal American towns. [Attributes: First Edition]

WORLIDGE, Thomas.
London: Printed by Dryden Leach for M. Worlidge, 1768. Very Good. 2 vols., 4to., contemporary full leather (red) with gilt ornamentation to boards, board edges and spine, gilt lettering to spine which is divided into six compartments, gilt page edges, pp. [14] (prelims. inc. list of subscribers), 48 (catalogue text); with frontispiece self-portrait in vol. I, frontispiece of Medusa in vol. II, and 182 plates (vol. I consisting of text and plates, vol. II only of title page and plates), all copper-engraved by the author with ample margins around the plates. A rare first edition (esp. rare for being complete with subscribers list in vol. I) and a beautiful set of exquisite engravings taken from ancient gems, themselves depicting scenes and characters from Greek and Roman history and mythology. Some fraying to the outer margin of p. 47 with no loss of text, binding a little bumped with some abrasion, some foxing to pages, otherwise a very good copy with all tissue guards present. Thomas Worlidge (1700-66) was an English painter and etcher who painted portraits of George II and David Garrick. Like his more famous contemporary Joshua Reynolds, he was a great admirer of Rembrandt (as suggested by the title of this book and the self-portrait, etched in the manner of Rembrandt, on the frontispiece), interest in whose work saw a revival among artists and collectors in eighteenth-century London.

- Leicht braunf … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCENOGRAPHIA AMERICANA - Thomas POWNALL (1722-1805), after
printed for John Bowles, Robert Sayer, Thomas Jefferys, Carington Bowles and Henry Parker, London, 1768. Copper engraving by P.C. Canot after a painting by Pugh from a design by Pownall, on laid paper. Plate mark: 14 1/2 x 20 3/4 inches. Sheet size: 17 3/4 x 24 1/4 inches. An important image of colonial Boston from the famous and very rare Scenographia Americana series: a strong impression with wide margins. Pownall's drawing of Boston, here ably engraved by Peter Charles Canot (1710-1777), was one of six prints in the Scenographia Americana series that were based on Pownall's sketches. This particular image was worked up into a painting by Pugh and it was from this that the engraving was made by Canot. The complete Scenographia Americana (with a total of 28 plates) is a legendary rarity. The individual prints are therefore all that the collector can realistically hope to acquire, and the present image is one of the most important. Taken from the vantage point of Castle William across the Harbor to the southeast, from left to right one makes out South Cove, South Battery, Fort Hill, a line of vessels docked along Long Wharf, and the mouth of the Charles River. Behind Long Wharf are visible the three peaks of the Trimontane, of which only Beacon Hill remains today. In the near foreground the fortifications of Castle William command the shipping channel between Castle and Governors islands, through which two British naval vessels have just safely passed. Governor Thomas Pownall, one of the few sympathetic colonial governors in North America, was also an artist, author and map … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Rollin
London: J. Rivington, 1768. These books are all in very good condition. The sturdy library-style bindings are a bit faded but barely bumped or rubbed. Inside, although there is some very infrequent toning and foxing, overall, the interior pages are clean and bright, amazing considering the age of these books. Some (2 or 3) of the many folded maps have some tears at the point where they attached to the binding but nothing severe or even affecting the actual map itself. The hinges are all intact, not surprising because the volumes have been professionally rebound and the bindings remain tight and sound. These books, however, are not ex-library or remainders. ROLLIN ANCIENT HISTORY 7 VOLUMES 1768 VERY GOOD CONDITION. I am especially pleased to be able to offer a very nice copy of a vintage edition (The Fifth Edition) of Rollin's history. EULER, Leonhard
St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1768. First edition, a fresh uncut copy, of these letters to the Princess Friederike Charlotte Leopoldine Louise of Brandenburg-Schwedt, to whom Euler had given lessons during his stay in Berlin. The work "had an immense success and profoundly influenced contemporary philosophy" (PMM 196, note). "Another multi-volume masterwork by Euler, the 'Lettres' are a principal document of the Enlightenment. Their passion for learning reflects that period's faith in education, including support of female learning. In the mid-nineteenth century, some scholars mistakenly believed that the title referred not to an actual person but to a technique in writing. The 'Lettres,' with their insightful explanation of the sciences and his core religious and spiritual positions, offer probably the best rounded view of Euler's character" (Calinger, Leonhard Euler: Mathematical Genius in the Enlightenment, pp. 467-8). Despite being written for the lay reader, these letters broke much new ground: letters 101-108 anticipate the invention of 'Venn diagrams' in the 1880s; letter 60 speculates on the existence of what are now called exoplanets orbiting the fixed stars (and whether they might support life), and letters 155-169 describe six methods of determining the longitude of a ship at sea. "The most exhaustive and authoritative science popularization written during the eighteenth century, the 'Lettres' critically examined in greater depth than did other works the complex and changing major Enlightenment natural philosophies, the Cartesian, Newtonian, Leibn … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: E. & C. Dilly, 1768. Duodecimo (166 x 98 mm). Recent tan half calf, marbled paper boards, black morocco label to spine. Partially erased contemporary ownership inscription to title page verso. Book stamp of I. A. Farrer to p. 314 and Spine gently cocked, book block a little shaken but sound, edges and tips occasionally nicked, gathering G slightly proud, rubbing to extremities, foxing to contents, spot of grease to upper margin of a couple of leaves of gathering L, upper margin quite closely trimmed; a very good copy of an oft-handled book. First edition of this practical book of recipes and domestic management. As with many cookbooks of the period this work combines traditional English recipes with French cuisine with dishes replicate "in the French manner", as well as introducing more exotic dishes, such as "Turtle the West-Indian way" (p. 117). The work also contains medicinal recipes, a number of which are accompanied by the instruction that they must be taken "at the changes of the moon" for full efficacy, and a guide for keeping bees in the appendix. This edition is uncommon institutionally and in commerce with just six copies traced in the UK, and seven copies appearing at auction. This copy has a sign of its practical use on page 204: in the recipe for "A Poor Man's Pudding" the ingredients "nutmeg grated" and "some rose water or sack" have been neatly struck through in ink. Stockholm, Lorens Ludvig Grefing, 1768. 4:o. (16),+ 16 s.

QUR'AN -
London: printed for T. Lewis, in Russell-Street, 1768. FIRST EDITIONS. Two works bound in one, 12mo, pp. [i], 133, [1] advertisement; [iv], 143, [1] blank; contemporary, calf, spine with red label lettered in gilt, upper hinge repaired; armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Blackett. An eighteenth century pot-boiler taking excerpts from the Sale's edition of the Qur'an in order to bash Papists. In the introduction the unknown compiler suggests that Islam took hold in the Middle-East because Christianity had left a moral vacuum. 'Mohammed arose at a most convenient time for a man of talents to give birth to anew reform of religion. Born in the midst of pagan darkness, and monkish barbarism, religion was debased to such a degree, as rendered the dictates of that subtle Arab really sublime, when compared with the grossness of pagan idolatry on the one hand, and with the then mixture of Christian idolatry and jargon on the other' (p. 10). Justification for this view is built from wide ranging excerpts of Soame Jenyns' Free Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Evil; William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester The Divine Legation of Moses Tournefort's Voyages Ockleys's Conquest of Syria, Persia, and Egypt by the Saracens the Bible, and of course the Sale's translation of the Koran. To excite sales our compiler has chosen topics likely to attract a buyer of the work, not surprisingly the largest extracts are on Divorce, Marriage and Women. Probably the buyer could justify the purchase of a work containing some titillating material as long as it strengthened and justified their own Protest … [Click Below for Full Description]

Redmann, Andreas Georg Friedrich von
1768. Kl.8, gestochenes Frontispiz, 1 Bl. Vorerinnerung, 188 S., Priv.-Kart. d. Zt., Kapitale u. Deckel m. einigen kl. Abspleissungen, Rücken geschwärzt, Ecken berieben, Vs. leimschattig, Name a. Vs., Frontispiz, Titelbl. u. erstes Bl. etw. stockfl., innen sonst tadellos.

YOUNG, Sir Arthur -
London: Printed for W. Nicoll, at the Paper Mill, No. 51, in St. Paul's Church Yard. MDCCLXVIII [1768]. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, pp. [iv], 227, [1] blank; with the half-title, outer margins of C2-C11 repaired (text unaffected); in contemporary boards, with neat new calf spine. Although listed anonymously in the ESTC, The Adventures of Miss Lucy Watson is now generally attributed to the agricultural writer Sir Arthur Young. This attribution is confidently supported by Ruth Perry in her chapter on Arthur Young's fiction in Novel Relations, 2004. Young published four novels in all, the others being The adventures of Emmera, or the fair American (1767), The history of Sir Charles Beaufort (1766), and Julia Benson; or the sufferings of innocence (1775; reprinted in Dublin in 1784, but no copy of the first edition located). It is perhaps significant that all but the last of these were published by William Nicoll, who was responsible for many of Young's agricultural writings. As Perry points out, Young's Autobiography does not mention any of these productions, and "the world seems to have forgotten that he wrote novels." It is Perry's opinion that Young "wrote his novels as pot-boilers, to make a little money to exchange in trade with his bookseller for more books. Although his novels contain much of interest to the social historian and the literary critic, Young himself intended posterity to forget these works of fiction. They are no worse than most of the novels published at the time--but also no better." Perry points out the many similarities between the four novels, including the … [Click Below for Full Description]
