Goethe-Kreis - Kestner, Charlotte, geb.
- Selten.

various, 1768. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Voltaire was a versatile and prolific writer, producing works in almost every literary form, including plays, poems, novels, essays, and historical and scientific works. One of Voltaire's lesser-known works was his philosophical essay 'L'Homme aux quatre écus' or "The Man with the Forty Crowns". This works discusses the parity in wealth in France offering his perspective on taxes, monetary circulation, governmental treasuries, and the manipulation of finances. Humorously, the satirical Voltaire suggests a tax on intelligence! This tome also includes two other treatises - Jean Olivier's edition of Pythagoras's speech and study on metempsychosis and the reincarnation of the soul; as well as Louis Desbief's discourse on musketeering. En la oficina de Joachin de Ibarra, 1768. Carbajal y Lancaster, Isidro de, Bishop of Cuenca. 4to. Old paper-covered boards. First edition. Crude leather spine, faint dampstain to front board and corner of first few leaves, rear board with larger dampstain as well as last leaves, occasional soil spot on leaves, bookseller label at rear, but untrimmed and wide margined, with strong impressions, certainly a good or better copy. Palau 162212. Also see 27675. Goldsmiths'-Kress no. 10472.100, suppl. Parreño Sale 323. Mostly consists of comments on certain writings of Isidro Carbajal y Lancaster, Bishop of Cuenca, who had accused the monarchy of setting the country "hopelessly adrift" and stripping the church of its properties, scorning its ministers, and running a disastrous colonial policy leading to deterioration of the Spanish possessions (there had been rioting in Quito, Ecuador, in 1766). The Prontuario variously ascribed these comments to the fiscales of the Consejo Real, Pedro Campomanes and José Moñino, as well as other documents in the case. The bishop was eventually forced "to recant formally and abjectly before a session of the Consejo de Castilla held in Aranda's residence," (Stanley J. Stein, "Apogee of Empire: Spain and New Spain in the Age of Charles III, 1759-1789," Bal … [Click Below for Full Description]

MANUSCRIPT. CORNWALL.
1768-94. 99 leaves, with 2 bundles & 11 other related documents loosely inserted. Full contemporary vellum, rather discoloured, but with original hand-written titles just visible. Contents a little loose in binding, front blank torn, some dusting. Folio. The manuscript, dated 1768-1794, records in detail the 'Inhabitants liable to send plows for the reparation of the highways, tenements valued by the poor rate of one penny to the pound'. It lists their names, tenement, yearly value, and amounts due and received. On the inner front board is the name Mr Samuel Symons, 'his hand and pen God bless'. Each parish was deemed responsible for its own roads, and parishioners were liable by statute, to labour, or 'plow labour' on the turnpike roads. The parish council appointed one of their number as 'Surveyor of the Highways' to organise this labour force and direct it to where it was needed. The appointment was unpaid, and lasted for a year. However as Defoe noted - 'the roads had been plow'd so deep, and materials have been in some places so difficult to be had for repair of the roads, that all the surveyors rates have been able to do nothing; nay, the whole country has not been able to repair them'.

The first three volumes contain the life of Cook and Cook's first voyage (circumnavigation) from 1768 to 1771 based on the account by Hawkesworth. Volumes 4 to 7 contain Cook's second voyage to the South Pole and circumnavigation from 1772 to 1775 based on Cook's own account with notes from the Journal by G. Forster, and volumes 8 to 13 contain Cook's third and last voyage to the Pacific from 1776 to 1778, based on the accounts by James Cook and James King. Volume 14 completes the series with a complete index, compiled by Chevallerau. With owner's inscriptions and each volume with discoloured library stamp. ALBERTI, Lodewyk and Ludwig Gottlieb PORTMAN.
[1] l. text + 4 plates; [8], VIII, [4], 260, [1], [1 blank] pp.; XII, [4], 255, [1 blank] pp.Very rare album with four beautiful hand-coloured aquatint views to Alberti's ethnographic monograph on the Xhosa people ("Kaffers"), of South Africa, together with both the first edition, in Dutch, as the first edition of the French translation of this monograph. Even though the plates are mentioned in the preface of the text volume, they are rarely found together. All the plates are brightly coloured and remarkably fresh and lively, evoking the beauty of the African landscape and the culture of the Xhosa. Lodewyk Alberti (1768-1812) came to the Netherlands in 1784 as lieutenant in the Dutch army, and left for the Cape in 1802. He successfully kept the peace between Xhosas, Khoisan and European colonists, but conflicts flared up soon after he left in 1806. He describes the situation and climate of Caffria, as well as the appearance and physical strength of the Xhosa, but mainly focuses on their culture.Ad 1: small tear in the text leaf of atlas, but restored, plates fine except for a tiny blemish on the first plate; ad 2: slightly browned, and recased, as noted; ad 3; some sentences marked in pencil the margins and an occasional annotation, plates slightly browned and binding rubbed along the extremities. Very good set.l Bobins collection 68; Gay 3153 (text only); Mendelssohn I, p. 17-18; Landwehr, Coloured plates 217-218.

BOSWELL, James.
[14], 346 pp.The first German edition of Boswell's Account of Corsica (1768), translated by Anton Ernst Klausing. In the first part Boswell recounts historical and geographical information about Corsica, while the second part includes a lively and detailed narrative of his journey to the island, interspersed with conversations with the Corsican patriot and leader Pasquale Paoli. The conversations with Paoli centre on democracy, social freedom, religion, and, of course, the Corsican Cause. Following Corsica's invasion by the French in 1768, Paoli took refuge in England, where he was feted by Samuel Johnson and his circle.Boswell's account was very successful. First published in 1768, it was immediately reprinted several times and translated into French, Dutch, Italian and German. The map with a small tear, binding chafed, corners bumped. He studied flora and fauna, landscape, geological condition, local population and culture. His findings were published in Reise durch verschiedenen Provinzen des russischen Reichs (3 volumes, St Petersburg 1771-1776). BROWNE, William George.
XXVI, [2], 392; [1], [1 blank], 449, [1 blank] pp.The rare Dutch translation of an important work, containing the earliest information on Darfur (Sudan). William George Browne (1768-1813), ''inspired by Bruce's travels, went to Egypt in 1792 hoping to explore the oases in the eastern Sahara and to journey to the source of the White Nile. He reached El Fashur in Darfur and was the first Englishman to explore the temple of Jupiter Ammon at the Oasis of Siwa. These deserts were not explored again until 1848 when Bayle St. John travelled through them. Browne was the first European to describe Darfur, which he reached with a Sudanese caravan in 1793. He was imprisoned there by the Sultan of Darfur. In 1796 he reached Egypt again by caravan and eventually returned to England via Syria and Constantinople. From 1800 to 1802 Browne travelled again in Turkey and the Levant. Some information gained at that time was published in Walpole's Memoirs. In 1812 he left England with the intention of travelling through Persia to Tartary, but was murdered by bandits in Persia'' (Blackmer). The maps show Darfur and the route of the Sudanese caravan travelling from Egypt to Darfur as well as the routes slave traders took from Darfur to surrounding countries (one route has been coloured). In very good condition and wholly untrimmed, with owner's stamp on both title-pages. RAMEL, Jean-Pierre.
6, [2], 192 pp.First edition of the Dutch translation of Ramel's account describing his escape from the penal colonies in Guiana. Jean-Pierre Ramel (1768-1815), officer in the French revolutionary army, was accused of royalist sympathies and consequently deported to the penal colonies in 1797, together with Jean-Charles Pichegru, François-Marie Barthelemy, François Aubry, Jean-Baptiste Dossonville, and others. In 1798, during a long and exhausting night, the prisoners managed to escape to Paramaribo, Surinam, from where they travelled back to Europe. In 1799 Ramel was given permission to return to France, where he served in the army under Rochambeau. After the Bourbon Restoration, he received the order of Saint Louis and was made "maréchal de camp". During the Second Restoration, however, Ramel was suspected of being loyal to Napoleon, which led to his assassination by reactionaries in 1815.Slightly browned with some occasional foxing. Spine slightly worn and discoloured. A very good copy, wholly untrimmed and in the original publisher's printed paper board wrappers.l Muller, America 344; Sabin 67626; WorldCat (7 copies).

[YOUNG, Sir Arthur].
London: Printed for W. Nicoll, at the Paper Mill, 1768. FIRST EDITION. Although listed anonymously in the ESTC, The Adventures of Miss Lucy Watson is now generally attributed to the agricultural writer Sir Arthur Young. This attribution is confidently supported by Ruth Perry in her chapter on Arthur Young's fiction in Novel Relations, 2004. Young published four novels in all, the others being The adventures of Emmera, or the fair American (1767), The history of Sir Charles Beaufort (1766), and Julia Benson; or the sufferings of innocence (1775; reprinted in Dublin in 1784, but no copy of the first edition located). It is perhaps significant that all but the last of these were published by William Nicoll, who was responsible for many of Young's agricultural writings. As Perry points out, Young's Autobiography does not mention any of these productions, and "the world seems to have forgotten that he wrote novels." It is Perry's opinion that Young "wrote his novels as pot-boilers, to make a little money to exchange in trade with his bookseller for more books. Although his novels contain much of interest to the social historian and the literary critic, Young himself intended posterity to forget these works of fiction. They are no worse than most of the novels published at the time--but also no better." Perry points out the many similarities between the four novels, including the fact that they are all epistolary and have strong heroines, and explains how the presence of his sister, of whom he was very fond, is recorded in his intelligent and well-read heroines and in … [Click Below for Full Description]

YOUNG, Sir Arthur -
London: Printed for W. Nicoll, at the Paper Mill, No. 51, in St. Paul's Church Yard. MDCCLXVIII [1768]. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, pp. [iv], 227, [1] blank; with the half-title, outer margins of C2-C11 repaired (text unaffected); in contemporary boards, with neat new calf spine. They are no worse than most of the novels published at the time--but also no better." Perry points out the many similarities between the four novels, including the … [Click Below for Full Description]
