Général Desaix
DESAIX Louis-Charles-Antoine (1768-1800). Général français. Lettre signée, Paris, 14 ventôse an 6 (4 mars 1798), au général Scherer, 1 page in-4, en-tête de l’Armée d’Angleterre. Rare. Desaix ».

BOSWELL, James
Glasgow: Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1768. First edition. 8vo. (xxiv), 382 pp. Recent speckled calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered dark red label. Engraved folding map (Rothschild's second state, bound before A1 and without the distance scale and marking of degrees to the margins) plus a title vignette. Map sometime neatly laid down, very good. By far Boswell's most successful book in his lifetime, despite the enduring popularity of his association with Samuel Johnson, and one that gave him his introduction into the literary life of London. He was received in Corsica in the manner of an Ambassador, and spoke long and deeply with General Paoli. On his return he continued to champion Corsica's cause, and took to occasionally wearing its national dress. Pottle, 24. Rothschild, 442-5. With the uncorrected text on D2 (first state) plus the cancelled leaves E2 and Z3 as often. Of the numerous misprints Pottle mentions pages 93, line 6 and 296, line 18 appear in their corrected states, but all else are present. [Attributes: First Edition]

BOSSU, Jean Bernard (1720-1792)
Paris: Le Jay, 1768. 2 volumes, 12mo. Half-titles. Four engraved plates (including frontispieces in each vol.). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spines with raised bands, ruled on either side of each band, red morocco lettering piece. Provenance: William McDowall, Castle Semple (armorial bookplate, covered by); Sir Michael Robert Shaw-Stewart, 7th Baronet (armorial bookplate) Rare first edition of a noted mid-18th century account of the Mississippi Valley. In this collection of 21 letters, Bossu, a French army officer, tells of his life and travels in the Louisiana country from 1751 to 1762. Going as far north as what is now Illinois and as far east as Mobile, Bossu gives interesting first- and second-hand accounts of life in the Mississippi Valley in the eighteenth century. "Bossu's writings constitute an important chapter in early Louisiana social history. He describes conditions of travel inland [as far north as Arkansas, Illinois, and the Missouri River country], the outlandish things that could and did happen to a European, his experiences among the Indians, the nature and customs of the country, and the general fauna. This book may be considered a major travel account" (Clark). Clark Old South II:5; Field 156; Gagnon II:219; Graff 361; Howes B626 ("Bossu was imprisoned and his book banned for awhile in France; this probably accounts for the scarcity of the first edition, of which Sabin found no record"); Rader 408; Sabin 6465 (stating: "I find no record of the first edition"); Streeter sale III:1518.

Quesnay Francois].
91, 1956-57, tomo II, pp. 3-15]. Gray, Thomas.
1768. London: J. Dodsley, 1768. 12mo, (4), 119, (3) pp. with original diary leaf mounted and inserted before half title. Crushed brown morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, covers panelled in gilt and blind tooling, backstrip lettered in gilt, gilt top, uncut. Binding lightly rubbed, mounted leaf in fine condition, stain on half title, a very pleasant copy in a collector's binding with manuscript fragment well-conserved. § First collected edition, complete with half title and final blank. Inserted is a leaf from the diary kept by the poet for 1763. The leaf is printed with sections for accounting, appointments, and memoranda and with a securities growth calculation table. On the recto Gray has recorded reference points on the Fahrenheit scale; on the verso he notes daily temperature readings with a few notes on weather, and, for Monday, January 3, "First Narcs. Polyanth. in water blows (white with pale yellow cup)." The leaf dates from a time when Gray's interests were shifting from English history to the natural world. "The acquisition of a copy of the tenth edition of Linnaeus's Systema naturae in 1759 signalled the rekindling of his youthful interest in natural history. He began to collect specimens of insects and plants, and to record observations on weather, the progress of the seasons, and anything which might differentiate English flora and fauna from the Swedish on which Linnaeus had based his work" (DNB). Dodsley was the first to propose a collected works; a Dublin and a Glasgow edition appeared later in the same year. ESTC T136298. Rothschild 1071.

Millan, ?The reform of the English militia and the new vigour introduced into its affairs after the passage of the Militia Acts of 1757-8 was reflected in the appearance of drillbooks devoted to that service; but the best of these books were of use to the officers of the regular army in the basic training of their men too, since the militia drills (on paper) tended to differ very little from the practice of the regular army. Without doubt the most useful and popular such work in the army was William Wind … [Click Below for Full Description]

(FREEMASONRY).
London: [no printer's name given], 1768. 8vo (162 × 90 mm), pp. [ii], 38, bound without half-title and final blanks. Typographical ornaments. Upper margins cut quite close, pagination just trimmed in a few cases. Late nineteenth-century half calf, spine with longitudinal purple label lettered in gilt, nineteenth-century bibliographical notes to front pastedown. Rubbed. A good copy. An apparently unrecorded issue of this anonymous anti-freemasonry sermon: also printed in the same year as Masonry the Way to Hell. The sermon takes as its text Revelation XVII, 5 "And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots, and Abominations of the Earth" and gives a detailed consideration of the supposed ceremonies of the masons. Three other editions/issues dated 1768 are known, one with a Robinson and Roberts imprint paginating [iv], 39, [1] (NY Historical Society only) and a stated "Second edition" with the same imprint and pagination (BL and Clark Library, UCLA only), together with a Dublin reprint. All three are recorded by ESTC in single copies only. The Sermon provoked a response from John Thompson, freemason, entitled Remarks on a sermon lately published; entitled, Masonry the way to hell. Being a defence of that antient and honourable order, against the Jesuitical sophistry and false calumny of the author (1768, BL only). Not found in ESTC or Worldcat.

DIDEROT, Denis
Paris: Briasson ; David ; Le Breton ; Durand, 1768. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The Enlightenment's most-important general encyclopedia! Through the mid-18th-century, large collections of knowledge were relegated to specific areas of study like law, medicine, or religion. However, Denis Diderot's 'Encyclopedie' changed the public's knowledge base as well as setting a standard for future generations of acquiring knowledge on many different subjects. This was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many different named writers. It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade. This enormous tome is the complete volume of illustrations from the 1768 edition of Diderot and d'Alembert's famous encyclopedia. It features 294 full-page and folding engravings covering a wide variety of topics including human anatomy, surgery and medicine, military and war, art and architecture, zoology, chemistry, and music and theater. One fascinating illustration is a double-page view of the eruption of Vesuvius.

MANUSCRIPT. CORNWALL.
1768-94. 99 leaves, with 2 bundles & 11 other related documents loosely inserted. Full contemporary vellum, rather discoloured, but with original hand-written titles just visible. Contents a little loose in binding, front blank torn, some dusting. Folio. The manuscript, dated 1768-1794, records in detail the 'Inhabitants liable to send plows for the reparation of the highways, tenements valued by the poor rate of one penny to the pound'. It lists their names, tenement, yearly value, and amounts due and received. On the inner front board is the name Mr Samuel Symons, 'his hand and pen God bless'. Each parish was deemed responsible for its own roads, and parishioners were liable by statute, to labour, or 'plow labour' on the turnpike roads. The parish council appointed one of their number as 'Surveyor of the Highways' to organise this labour force and direct it to where it was needed. The appointment was unpaid, and lasted for a year. However as Defoe noted - 'the roads had been plow'd so deep, and materials have been in some places so difficult to be had for repair of the roads, that all the surveyors rates have been able to do nothing; nay, the whole country has not been able to repair them'.

Incluye testimonios de líderes de la Iglesia y otros y traza la historia de la orden por años, con mucha información sobre sus actividades en Europa y las Américas. WALKER, EMERY, HIS COPY). FENELON, FRANCOIS SALIGNAC DE LA MOTHE
London: W. and W. Strahan, 1768. First Edition of this Translation. From the library of a key figure in the private press movement, this is an attractively printed translation of Fenelon's utopian work based on the character in Homer's "Odyssey." Written when Fénelon (1651-1715) was tutor to Louis XIV's grandson, the book was designed to give the future ruler more farsighted political, social, and economic ideas than he might otherwise have met with. Our copy was once owned by engraver, printer, typographer, and designer Emery Walker (1851-1933). England. It is not overreaching to say that the private press movement would not exist were it not for Walker's influence. He was a silent partner in the Kelmscott Press, he was a co-founder of the Doves Press, and he, along with Sydney Cockerell, guided St John Hornby in choosing the Subiaco type for the Ashendene Press. Together these three are the foundation of all private presses. Walker's small, cramped handwriting in the inscription on our book belies the beautifully designed pages and letterforms of his professional work. He bought this copy in 1875 "(or thereabouts)" and perhaps the crisp printing and spacious layout appealed to his own developing aesthetic.. 290 x 220 mm. Pierre-Antoine de La Place
[Click Below for Full Description]

It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade. This enormous tome is the complete volume of illustrations from the 1768 edition of Diderot and d Alembert s famous encyclopedia. It features 294 full-page and folding engravings covering a wide variety of topics including human anatomy, surgery and medicine, military and war, art and architecture, zoology, chemistry, and music and theater.
