STORK, William (d. 1768), and John BARTRAM (1699-1777)
London: W. Nicoll and G. Woodfall, 1766. Two parts in one, 8vo. [6], xxii, 23-90; viii, 70pp. Nineteenth century half blue morocco and marbled paper covered boards, flat spine gilt Rare edition of one of the most important 18th-century works on Florida and the first edition to include the work of famed American botanist John Bartram. Great Britain took possession of Florida in the peace settlement of the French and Indian War in 1763, opening the region to exploration and development by the English. In the winter of 1765-66, promoter William Stork and naturalist John Bartram explored the eastern part of Florida, up the St. Johns River near present day Jacksonville. "The celebrated botanist's journal complements Stork's promotional account, and both are among the most important sources for the history of East Florida" (Streeter). Stork describes the importance of East Florida to Great Britain, especially regarding commerce and relations with the Spanish settlements. Bartram's journal is delightful: the daily thoughts and observations of probably the greatest 18th-century American naturalist. It runs from 19th December 1765 to February 12th 1766 and includes details of the places visited and the people encountered, all interspersed with notes on the climate, the terrain, and of course the indigenous animals and plants. This edition, the second issue overall, is the first to include Bartram's journal and is perhaps the most rare of the three editions. One of the most important 18th-century works on Florida, significant for its contributions to travel literatur … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dr. Peter Sonmans; Joseph Jacobs; John Scull; Mr. Galloway
[Likely Philadelphia, aft. 1766]. [1½]pp. Watermarked and laid paper. Bifolium; docketed on verso: "State of Mr. Hooper's Case to Mr. Galloway." Folds; lacking upper half of second leaf, apparently not affecting text; very good. 18th century legal memorandum, unsigned, prepared for one "Mr. Galloway" regarding a dispute over the title to 3000 acres of land purchased from Native Americans in the Province of Pennsylvania. (This may be Joseph Galloway (1731-1803), the Second Continental Congress delegate who eventually became a fierce Loyalist. Galloway was also a lawyer -who studied law alongside William Franklin, son of Benjamin Franklin- and it would seem plausible he could be our "Mr. Galloway.") The document lays out the history of the original land grant from Pennsylvania Proprietor William Penn and the tract's subsequent surveying by John Scull, one of the Proprietary's commissioned Deputy Surveyors. Scull was directed to survey the tract at the behest of Joseph Jacobs of Philadelphia acting on behalf of the land owners. These owners were Dr. Peter Sonmans of Philadelphia and the other heirs at law to his father's, Arent Sonman's, estate. At one time, the Sonmans family had the largest land holding in the colonial Province of East Jersey and had the right to 5000 acres in Pennsylvania. According to the present memorandum, it appears that the surveyed 3000-acre tract erroneously included lands within "Indian Country:" "Jacobs by his written contract agreed to Locate and lay out the Aforesd. 3000 acres, upon Land then purchased of the Indians but either by mistake in hims … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUFFON, Georges Louis Leclerc
1766. "Virtually all the well-known writers of the Enlightenment were 'Buffonians'" ― Ernst Mayer The monumental work by Comte de Buffon, "Histoire Naturelle," was fascinating 18th-century collection of articles and encyclopedia entries on material sciences, physics, chemistry, technology, as well as the history of animals. Buffon wrote the volumes with the intent of addressing all of natural history, but after realizing the grandeur of the work, it focuses only minerals, birds, and quadrupeds. This popular fourteenth volume of the original set includes 41 full-page copper engravings. This particular volume is important because it has implication on the furthering of the theories of evolution. This volume features descriptions and illustrations of the following animals: monkeys, orangutans, gibbons, mandrills, malbrouck, talapoin, and many other primates.

Teodoro Viero (Bassano 1740 - Venezia 1819)
Coppia di incisioni all'acquaforte e bulino, finemente colorate a mano in epoca, circa 1766, firmate in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Homer; editor: Anne Le Fèvre Dacier
J. De Wetstein & Fils, 1766. Engraved; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; Author: Homer - In the Western classical tradition, Homer is the author of the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey," and is revered as the greatest of ancient Greek epic poets. These epics lie at the beginning of the Western canon of literature, and have had an enormous influence on the history of literature. When he lived is unknown. Herodotus estimates that Homer lived 400 years before his own time, which would place him at around 850 BC, while other ancient sources claim that he lived much nearer to the supposed time of the Trojan War, in the early 12th century BC. Most modern researchers place Homer in the 7th or 8th centuries BC. The formative influence of the Homeric epics in shaping Greek culture was widely recognized, and Homer was described as the teacher of Greece. Homer's works, which are about fifty percent speeches, provided models in persuasive speaking and writing that were emulated throughout the ancient and medieval Greek worlds. Fragments of Homer account for nearly half of all identifiable Greek literary papyrus finds. Volume I: Introduction to the Greek of Homer translated by Madame Dacier & comments containing two prefaces of this lady, one for the Iliad, and the other for the Odyssey, followed by Life of Homer & c. In addition, the preface of Mr. Pope on the Iliad, his essay on the life & the writings of Homer, and other of its rooms, the same as Mr. Abbe Banier, Volumes II-IV: Iliad; volumes V-VII: Odyssee. "Laokoon...had a world-wide influence. It takes its name from the famous statue discovered at Rome in the sixteenth century. It analyses the differences between the sculptor's treatment of Laokoon wrestling with the serpents and Virgil's treatment of the same theme, and from there goes on to discuss the limits and limitations of all the arts. It contains the first clear statement of the truth, which is now considered axiomatic, that every art is subject to limitations, and can achieve greatness only by a clear understanding of and self-restriction to its proper function. The most telling passages, and those which have borne most fruit, are those on poetry...His exposition of the themes of Homer and Sophocles is especially effective, and he opened up a new prospect in the appreciation of Greek literature." Please see description below. The London Magazine Revolutionary War Stamp Act 1766 ".....That the colonies have no representation in parliament. That to propose taxing them by parliament, and refuse them the liberty of chusing a representative council, to meet in the colonies, and consider and judge of the necessity of any general tax, and the quantum, shows suspicion of their loyalty to the crown, or of their regard for their country, or of their common sense and understanding, which they have not deserved. That compelling the colonies to pay money without their consent, would be rather like raising contributions in an enemy's country, than taxing of Englishmen for their own public benefit. That it would be treating them as a conquered people, and not as true British subjects." ****** Original 1766 volume, replete with information regarding the Stamp Act. The act is written about at length, its repeal as well. It touches on freedom of elections (the right to a fair & honest election), no taxation without representation, justice, liberty, &c. An explosion of thought and action that brought about the Revolutionary War. Also in this volume, Consequences of the excessive use of Opium, East & West Florida, Cherokees, Locusts, Fireflies of America, Obstructions to the Conversion of the Jews, East-India Company, New method of Inoculation, Rousseau, Hume, Plants in Japan & America, & some lovely detailed engravings - American Armadillo, A View of Bristol Hot Well House and St. Vincents Rock, the Argus or Luen, a Pheasent from China, a Coal-Staith when the Keels are Loading, Map of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed on thick gray paper, bound in marbled paper over cloth boards. In fine condition throughout. Braille music editions of this kind are extremely rare. This book is in very good to near fine condition, with minor cover wear as pictured. The pages are untorn, and complete with no writing or stamps of any kind. One of the fold outs appears to have an inch of tape, and a small, light stain from liquid. The plates have been counted, and though all 19 are there, they areslightly out of order, possibly a rebinder's error. There are a few small scuffs on the marbled covers, unnoticeable at first because the color blends in. The lay of the book is even, the binding is sturdy (a bit tight) and there are no loose pages. This book is mildew and smell free. A beautiful historical specimen in surprisingly good, complete condition. Stowe: A Description of the Magnificent House and Gardens of the Right Honourable Richard, Earl Temple, Viscount and Baron Cobham. [Walpole, Horace].
London: Printed for William Bathoe, 1766. Third edition. 8vo. xxiv, 200p. Rebound in quarter calf with marbled paper sides, the spine in six panels with gilt title on a maroon label, dotted rules on the bands. Just a few smudges to the text, else quite clean. A very nice copy. Item #21489 "[Walpole] was a devotee of the Renaissance and medievalism and it was through this that he inspired a revival in gothic architecture and instigated the gothic novel. His novel The Castle of Otranto began a whole new movement in literature and captured and redirected the public taste. While it would be excessive to state that Walpole's novel was the sole perpetrator of the revolution, since there had been a rekindling of interest in historical fiction after decades of fascination for the oriental tale, Walpole's fiction rapidly became the figurehead of the movement and has remained so to this day." (St. James Guide to Horror, Ghost & Gothic Writers, p. 616). "Its influence on Poe is manifest, and it has survived in such novels and Bram Stoker's Dracula and in modern mystery stories and horror films." (PMM, 2nd ed., p. 126). Hazen, p. 55; Printing and the Mind of Man, no. 211.

Charlevoix, François-Xavier
Dublin, 1766. Two volumes. [10],48,228; [22],335pp., plus eight folding maps and two plates. Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked in modern calf, gilt, morocco labels, edges marbled. Several maps with a few small marginal tears and chips, some dust soiling. Text with light tanning and dampstaining. About very good. Charlevoix travelled in the Great Lakes region and down the Mississippi in 1720-22, to inspect interior posts and settlements and to gather more information about the westward regions. He had intended to return upriver, but he fell ill at Biloxi and returned to France in 1723. Originally published in 1744 as part of Charlevoix's larger work on New France, this journal was published separately in English, in London in 1766. The Dublin edition, which is much rarer, is considered the best by Howes and others because of the accompanying maps and the two striking Indian portraits which appear as frontispieces, "A Delaware Indian with his tomahawk, scalping knife, &c." and "Outacite Chief of the Cherokees." The text contains a short appendix relating to the West Indies, with excellent maps of Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and the Caribbean. HOWES C308, "b." CLARK I:60. FIELD 283. SABIN 12139. GRAFF 651. [Fossils]. [Earthquakes]. [Cabinets of Curiosity]. Elie Bertrand.
Avignon: Chez Louis Chambeau, 1766. First edition.. Some scattered foxing; some slight rubbing; a very good copy.. 4to, contemporary calf, gilt spine, morocco label, gilt lettering, [8], 552 pages. Collects a number of the Swiss geologist and natural philosopherís important papers, including on the distribution of fossils, on earthquakes, and on the origin of mountains. See Kennard B. Bork. ìElie Betrand (1713ñ1797) Sees Godís Order in Natureís Record: The 1766 ëRecueil de divers traitÈs sur líhistoire naturelle.íî Earth Sciences History 10, no. 1 (1991): 73-88. Bork notes in part, ìIn the Recueil we see Bertrandís eclectic epistemology attempt to deal with such topics as the interior of the earth, earthquakes, fossils, and the origin and Providential use of mountains. Celebrated in his day, Bertrand was a correspondent of Voltaire, a counselor to the Polish court, and a member of numerous learned societies. He published articles in the French EncyclopÈdie, and his 1763 Dictionnaire universel des fossiles was among the most-read scientific books of the century. The obscurity which enveloped Elie Bertrand seems related in large part to the fact that he was an accumulator of data and a commentator about past theories, rather than an innovator of new concepts. As the natural theology that undergirded his writing became obsolete, the cogency of his arguments diminished. In the context of his time, however, Bertrand is an instructive example of how geoscience matured during what has been termed a sterile period in the development of natural history.î

SALAT, Jakob
First edition. 'In agreement with Kant, Jakob Salat (1766–1851) believed that morality was the kernel of religion. But Salat also believed that the speculative concerns of critical theology were completed only with Fichte. Being close to the Enlightenment, he was hostile to superstition. This raised the suspicion that he was a ‘rationalist’ and a thinker dangerous for the Church. He, in turn, stigmatized his opponents as obscurantists. Despite massive criticism of his work, Salat was named the successor of Mutschelle for pastoral theology at the Lyzeum in Munich. In 1807, he accepted an appointment as professor of general philosophy, moral philosophy and the philosophy of religion at the University of Landshut, succeeding the Kantian, Georg Leonhard Reiner. He would later refuse a number of offers to work at universities in the Netherlands . Salat’s understanding of rationality hardly changed after his initial study of Kant and Fichte. As the years progressed, this ‘conservatism’ brought him into conflict with Hegel, Schelling and thinkers inspired by romanticism, who, through their review periodicals, hampered further reception of Salat’s works. After relocating to Munich (1826), Salat retired and stayed in Landshut as a private scholar until his death (Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes, small 8vo, xxxiv, [i], 368; xviii, [ii], 369-797 pp., contemporary speckled blue boards with black spine labels, yellow edges, bookplates 'LL' in floral heart motif, title-pages and first few leaves a little foxed otherwise clean and unm … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mary] Johnson
London: Printed for W. Nicoll, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1766. Fourth Edition. Full Leather. Very Good binding. Madam Johnson's Young Woman's Companion, with information on math, writing, cooking, budgeting, directions to maidservants, and tables of figures. Ignoring the moral standpoint, which clearly suggests that all a lady needs know is how to purchase, prepare, and serve meals, Oxford calls this "an entertaining book and must have been useful in its day." Admittedly, the recipes are intriguing and instructions most likely helpful for a head of house. A copy of the Fourth Edition, with a leaf of publisher's advertisements at the rear, and front endpaper signed by a Sarah Roger, three years after publication, with flourishes and finished with a drawing of a bird. 197, [19] pp. Includes the leaf of publisher's advertisements at the rear. Does not include the portrait frontispiece mentioned in Oxford's description of the First Edition or Bitting's description of the second, although these do not state definitively if the portrait should appear in later editions. Rebacked full calf, with contemporary boards and modern spine; a Very Good copy; collates complete. Four copies of this edition found on OCLC. (Oxford, 83. Bitting, 247). Very Good binding.
