Ausgabe (Goedeke IV/I,578,10; Price&Price 151; Leemann van Elck 328-336; HAB,116;).

Venturi, Settecento riformatore, p.355-85.

Hawes, Clark and Collins, W Johnston, T Caslon, T Lownds and the Executors of B Dodd, London. 1765 - First Johnson edition, possibly the second issue of 1765, complete in eight volumes with the portrait frontispiece to vol I and half-titles to vols III – VIII. There are pencil notes to the texts of some volumes. The bindings are reasonably firm with no loose pages. An important edition of Shakespeare's plays and quite uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition]

Questio [!] Medica, Cardinalitiis Disputationibus manè discutienda . vigesimâ-octavâ mensis Februarii, Anno Domini M. DCC. LXV. M. Joanne-Baptista Basseville, Doctore Medico, Praeside. An quae viris, eadem mulieribus conveniunt corporis & animi exercitia?

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Plates vol. 4 Paris (1765) Folio, 253 x 393mm. 55 pages of descriptive text & 12 loose plates with their accompanying 3 text sheets from the volume of plates. Slight browning to margins, a little spotting otherwise very good. The 12 plates and descriptive text for the entry of Fayencerie from volume IV of plates. Plates are numbered 1-12. Also with the relevant entries listed under Fayence in the Table Analytique et Raisonnà e du Dictionnaire des Sciences, Arts et Mà tiers. Vol 1 (1780) 5 pages (371, & 455-460) from volume VI of the Encyclopà die (1756) including La ville de Faenza en Italie and Fayence en gà nà ral 1 page (609) from volume XVI of the Encyclopà die (1765) including information on Fayence trezalà e 2 pages (33 & 518) from volume IV of the Supplà ment à l'Encyclopà die (1777) which includes Manufacture de fayence and Poterie de fayence With some browning to a few leaves. All aspects of pottery and crockery have been examined in these plates, originally designed by Lucotte. Opening with a scene of the earthworks, the plates display both simple and ornate crockery, a variety of tools and pieces of equipment, and most notably different types of pottery wheels with accurate representations of kilns and a pottery mill. Lucotte's contribution to the plates volumes is far more extensive than to the text volumes, designing over 650 himself and writing around forty-five commentaries. He was heavily influenced by the Descriptions des arts et mà tiers of the Paris Acadà mie royale des sciences, as seen here. Although not working on one of his specialities, he approaches his work on pottery and crockery with his characteristic enthusiasm and attention to detail.

Paris, an 3 – an 6 et sans date. ». - Rudel du Miral, conventionnel du Puy-de-Dôme. L.A.S.         MÉMOIRES ET OBSERVATIONS GÉOGRAPHIQUE ET CRITIQUES SUR LA SITUATION DES PAYS SEPTENTRIONAUX DE L'ASIE ET L'AMÉRIQUE

Lausanne: Antoine Chapuis, 1765. Title in red and black, engraved vignette on dedication page. Two engraved folding maps. Quarto. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt stamp on upper cover. Minor repairs to top and tail of spine. Very good. Provenance: Marinens Bibliothek; deaccessioned by the Garnisions Biblioteket in 2017. Engel availed himself of the most up-to-date geographic intelligence on the region by explorers and cartographers such as Kirilov, Buache, Delisle, and Gmelin, evaluating each in order to come to a more accurate picture of the Arctic. He stated definitively that California was not an island but rather a peninsula and rejected the fantastical Sea of the West asserted by Buache and Delisle. On the other hand, his critiques of Müller's map of Siberia were unfounded, and his understanding of the rivers of Western North America was described by Wagner as characterized by remarkable imagination. The maps are by the Swiss cartographer Jacques Antony Chovin. "Contains accounts of the Cabrillo, De Fonte and De Fuca exploring voyages up the Pacific coast and definitively refuted the conception of Californian insularity" - Howes. Lada-Mocarski notes that Engel "examined diligently the maps and writings of Kirilov (the compiler of the first Russian atlas), Buache, Delisle, Muller, Gmelin, and others - and invariably, with some justification, found something wrong with each of them. He examined these works with regard to the northern parts of both Asia and America. Most of the questions he raised were valid and the present-day student of these regions would profit by reading his work with a modern maps before him, to see who was right or wrong - and when wrong, how wrong. A valuable part of Engel's present work is his rejection of the persistent belief held by many of his contemporary geographers and cartographers that California was an island. He unequivocally asserted...that (in translation), 'California is not an island but a peninsula.'" HOWES E149. LADA-MOCARSKI 18. SABIN 22571. STREETER SALE 3460. WICKERSHAM 3542.

Robert Barclay was a 17th-century Scottish Quaker and considered one of the most important Quaker authors. His most important work, ‘An Apology for the True Christian Divinity,’ is often thought to be “the most impressive theological writings of the century and often marked by the eloquence of lofty moral convictions.” (Garnet, 226). ‘Apology’ was written to be an elaborate statement for the Quakers to hold certain religious fundamentals which were outlined in one of Barclay’s earlier works, the ‘Theses.’ According to the DNB, “Barclay's great book, ‘The Apology,’ is remarkable as the standard exposition of the principles of his sect, and is not only the first defense of those principles by a man of trained intelligence, but in many respects one of the most impressive theological writings of the century.” A rare 1765 edition of Barclay’s ‘Apology.’ This edition is the eighth overall English printing of this work but the first published by Baskerville.         Observations sur l'histoire de France

pal la Compagnie des Libraires, 1765. Due volumi di cm. 16,5, pp. xx, 453 (1); viii, 427 (1). Graziosa legatura coeva in piena pelle con titoli su tass. e ricchi fregi in oro al dorso; tagli spruzzati. Impercettibile mancanza ad una cuffia. Esemplare fresco e ben conservato. Edizione originale. Cfr.         Oeuvres mêlées [Histoire géographique de la Nouvelle-Ecosse]

First edition, with three fine engravings by Le Mire after Gravelot, a title vignette (repeated) and two headpieces.Polished marbled calf. Spine in compartments. Light brown morocco title and volume labels. Tear with lack to lower joint of foot of spine of Volume I. Small lack to upper joint at foot of spine to Volume II. Two corners slightly bumped. A little rubbing. A very good copy. The first volume is made up of various bits of occasional verse and other academic poems by Lafargue, as well as a treatise on oratorical pronunciation. Of greater interest is the second volume, which begins with a treatise on the reading and above all translation of the Histoire géographique de la Nouvelle-Ecosse [General History of New Caledonia or Acadia], an anonymous work based in part on Charlevoix's Histoire de la Nouvelle-France [History of New France]. The author gives a precise list of bays, ports, goods and production, a history of the trade there and the importance of its geographical location for the security of New France, since New Caledonia formed a peninsula in front of Quebec. The author also gives an overview of the relations and conflicts between France and Britain over this territory. An important account and without doubt the first on this region of the North-East of Canada, which became home to a number of people from Poitiers, who shaped the language of Acadia, and 12,000 of whom were deported in 1755 to other British colonies.

[Attributes: First Edition]

1765 - An unpublished account of an expedition throughout Santo Domingo, illustrated with manuscript maps, bound in contemporary red morocco. N.d. [c.1765]. S.l. [Santo Domingo or France]. 4to (203 x 160 mm). 4 [blank], 63 pp., 5 [blank]. Contemporary red morocco, boards with double gilt fillet and interlaced floral pattern, spine densely tooled, raised bands, lettered in gilt, excellent condition. Manuscript on paper, in a single and perfectly legible hand; very clean, the maps with fold tears without loss, else in excellent condition. 24,000 $ Unpublished manuscript account of Lescallier´s voyage throughout the Spanish part of Santo Domingo, bound possibly for presentation in contemporary red morocco, and illustrated with four folding manuscript maps of the Island. The illustration is comprised of 4 folding manuscript maps and plans –most with wash colour- all of remarkable quality and beauty: Croquis des passages à gué des principales rivières dans la route du Cap à Santo Domingo par Sentiago; Plan de la ville de Santo Domingo, relevé par Daniel Lescallier en l'année 1764; Petit Yaque dans la plaine de San Juan; Carte itinéraire des deux routes principales de la ville espagnole de Santo Domingo en l'Isle St Domingue. The book contains a complete description of the routes from Daxabon to Santo Domingo, capital of the Spanish part of the Island. The first route took him through Boca de Hamina, Santiago de los Caballeros, and other places, the second was further south: Banica, San Juan, Azua, Baini, Candelaria, Nisao and Jaina. His observations are comprehensive and detailed. Lescallier (1743-1822) was a French Officer of the marine, commissioned mostly to the West Indies; in 1764 he was posted in Santo Domingo for a two-year post under the orders of the Comte d'Estaing, later the Antilles, Demerary, Berbice and other places, always in the quality of French officer to colonies, allowing him access and geographical information. During the years of the Empire he is commissioned as Council of State in charge of the colonies, and later. In 1788 he begins studying vessels, concluding in an important study of the management and equipment of them. He authored several works about the French colonies in the West Indies, the Black population, and the Marine, including a treatise on vessels as well as the translation of The Mutiny of the Bounty –commanded by Bligh- into French, this is to be one of the most important naval scandals of the British Marine of the 18th century; he also wrote the “Exposé des Moyens de mettre en valeur et d’administrer La Guiane”, 1791; “Traite pratique du greement des vaisseaux et autres batimens de mer”, 1791, and “Voyage en Angleterre, en Russie et en Suede, fait en 1775”, 1800, printed by Didot. Lescallier also published an abridged edition of Stedman´s “Voyage a Surinam”, titled “Notions sur la culture des Terres basses dans la Guiane”, 1799 (cf. Sabin 91083). This is probably Lescallier´s rarest work, which has remained unpublished to-date, thus full of research potential. Of this account, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France only has a manuscript map titled “Carte itinéraire des deux routes principales du Cap Français à la ville Espagnole de Santo Domingo, relevée par Daniel Lescalier en 1764”, accompanied by a note "Communiqué par le Cen Lescallier en l'an 8" (Département des Cartes et Plans, SH Pf 150 Div 4 pièce 7 D). Provenance: M. Hurson, conseiller au Parlement and Mayor of Martinique, armorial bookplate on front pastedown. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Reliques of Ancient English Poetry:

London: for J. Dodsley,, 1765. Consisting of Old Heroic Ballads, Songs, and other Pieces of our earlier Poets, (Chiefly of the Lyric kind.) [Together with] EVANS, Thomas. Old Ballads, Historical and Narrative. London: T. Evans, 1777. 5 volumes, foolscap octavo (180 × 115 mm). Contemporary streaked calf, spines gilt in compartments with flower and star tools, red and green morocco labels, marbled endpapers, single-line rules and cornerpieces gilt. Half-titles in Vols. II and III (all issued); errata at end of Vol. III, advert and notice to the binder not bound in. Engraved frontispiece by C. Grignion after S. Wale, engraved leaf of music at end of Vol. II, title, head- and tail-vignettes. Bookplate to verso of each title page. Some joints starting, head of spine to volume V a little scuffed, occasional light spots but contents generally clean and fresh. An excellent set. First editions. The dedication to Reliques, though signed by Percy, was written by Samuel Johnson. Johnson had in fact offered to do much more, but the task of helping Percy select and annotate the material fell instead to Shenstone. "Most of Percy's contemporaries welcomed the Reliques as a powerful blast of fresh air. 'Poetry has been absolutely redeemed by it', wrote Wordsworth ('Essay supplementary to the preface', Lyrical Ballads, 1815, 3, 75). Several generations of poets felt its influence: Blake, Coleridge, Keats, Rossetti, Morris, Swinburne, and many lesser lights. Scott, both as novelist and ballad-editor, owed a debt to the book, as did figures such as Bürger, Herder, and the Grimm brothers in Germany, and by extension European Romanticism in general" (ODNB).

Les conquêtes de l'empereur de la Chine]. also known as: K'ien-Lung Pingding Xiyu Zhan Tu [= Emperor K'ien-Lung Pacifying the Western Regions].

Paris -1775 1765 - The complete set of sixteen copper plate engravings (sheet size 97 x 64.5 cm.) by L.J. Masquelier (1), J. Aliamet (2), J.Ph. le Bas (5), A. St.-Aubin (2), F.D. Née (1), B.L. Prevost (2), P.P. Choffard (2), and N. de Launay (1), produced under the supervision of Charles-Nicholas Cochin, some restoration to margins, very good impressions. The extremely rare set of plates commissioned by K'ien-Lung, Emperor of China (1735-1795) to celebrate his first campaign victory. "The prints are from the plates prepared for K'ien-Lung, Emperor of China, produced officially in an edition of 200 copies for his personal distribution. However, evidence is that prints were pulled for the King of France and influential persons in Paris as well. The drawings were made in China under detailed orders from K'ien-Lung by three Jesuit and one Augustinian missionary artists after palace paintings in the 1760s, and forwarded to Paris for reproduction under the direction of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, "Cochin fils". French sensibility to the artistic requirements of engravings for imperial distribution resulted in delays while the drawings were "improved," but all the plates and prints were finally sent to China by 1775." (Getty Museum). The battle-pieces are not only outstanding pieces of art, but also form an important visual source on military history and evidence of the cultural exchange between the East and the West - K'ien-Lung was inspired to commission the series after seeing engravings of battle scenes executed by the German Georg Philipp Rugendas. K'ien-Lung, who proudly called himself "The Old Man with Ten Achievements" having won ten victories in the wars of conquest, later ordered five similar albums (produced in China) but the Pacifying the Western Regions suite is particularly valuable as the first of this series and the most artistically accomplished. The emperor was a fitting inheritor of the martial skills of his Manchu ancestors. The Manchus, hitherto a confederation of tribes in north-east Asia, had taken advantage of peasant rebellions against the Ming dynasty and had occupied Beijing in 1644. From there, they proceeded to conquer the rest of China – forming a state known in Europe as "Grand Tartary"- leaving them as one of the three "superpowers" in central Eurasia along with Muscovite Russia and the Zunghar Mongolian confederation. The tensions between these powers led to a century of sporadic warfare in the region. In 1755, taking advantage of internal rivalries, the emperor's expeditionary force marched into Zunghar territory, where after two years fighting, K'ien-Lung succeeded in subduing the population. This victory made possible the conquest of the Uigher population in Eastern Turkestan. The result of these two campaigns was to extend the area of the Qing Empire by the addition of the vast region which became known as Xinjiang [= new frontier] Province. The Qing or Manchu dynasty, was the last imperial dynasty of China, ruling from 1644 to 1912, and formed the territorial base for the modern Chinese state. The 1755–1760 campaign in the Western Regions was the greatest war of conquest in the history of the Chinese Empire. Inspired by his first big victory, K'ien-Lung decided to record it. The Emperor had ordered his commanders to have drawings made of all the battles during the campaign. A number of these were later painted on silk, probably under the guidance of Jesuit artists, and exhibited in one of his palaces. In 1764 the Jesuits Guiseppe Castiglione, Ignites Sichelbarth, Jean-Denis Attiret and the Augustin Friar Jean-Damascene Sallusti were asked to make drawings after these paintings, which were then engraved in Paris. Of each plate two hundred copies were printed on the finest available paper and in 1768 two ships, each with 100 imprints of the first four plates, arrived in China. The last shipment of copper plates and prints arrived in the summer of 1775. K'ien-Lung presented eighty-one of the sets to relatives and court fa
