Dickinson, John]
Re-Printed for J. Almon., London, 1765. [3]-62pp., plus [1]p. advertisement. Antique-style three quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, raised bands, gilt leather label. Tear to bottom margin of second leaf, not affecting text. Very good. Lacks half-title. The scarce first British edition, after the first edition printed in Philadelphia the same year. An important tract against the Stamp Act, and the first by the "Pennsylvania Farmer, " John Dickinson. Dickinson's LETTERS FROM A FARMER IN PENNSYLVANIA., published in 1768, put him at the forefront of the patriot movement. In 1774 he became chairman of the Philadelphia Committee of Correspondence. "Considered only as an essay in economic theory the pamphlet is notable, for its discussion of paper money, of flows of trade, and of the mechanisms and effects of taxation are sophisticated for the time. But the essay is more than a technical treatise. Stylistically, it has the vivid phraseology, the dramatic, exclamatory italicization and paragraphing, and the aptness of illustration that would soon make Dickinson the most widely read pamphleteer in the colonies" - Bailyn. Adams locates twelve copies of this edition. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 65-5b. HOWES D328. SABIN 20043. BAILYN, PAMPHLETS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION 14. [Attributes: First Edition]

Germany - De Beaurain, Jean. (1696 – 1771)
1765. Paris, De Beaurain, 1765. Original hand-coloured copper engraving. Plate Size: 98 cm x 72 cm. Sheet Size: 100.5 cm x 74.4 cm. Original map. Large map with many reinforced folds in very good condition with only faint browning to outer margins. Some very small tears evident only. [Coll. Niewodniczanski 53; Imago Germaniae 32 mit Teilabb]. A very large, exceptionally detailed and interesting map of Germany, the low countries (the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg), northern France and the north of Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and the future states of Eastern Europe. Denmark and the southern tip of Sweden are seen at the top of the map while Britain lies at the top left corner. Two inset boxes in the lower corners provide explanatory details of the major dates and events of the Seven Years' War - a war fought upon and over the region the map covers. Another smaller, box carries map reference keys and further explanatory notes. The fragmented jigsaw of German principalities, states, mini-states and bishoprics is evident from map. The names of regions and regional powers crisscross the map: names such as 'Champagne', 'Palatinat', 'Moaravie', 'Brandeburg' and Prussia for example. The sites of the battles between the armies of the contesting coalitions are depicted. Mountains, rivers and urban centers are also shown, illustrating that this was a crowded theatre of war, while the illustrated complex political divisions of 18th Century Europe show that the war's script was equally baroque. A large decorative cartouche is located in the North Sea. The clou … [Click Below for Full Description]

Reid, Thomas
Millar, Kincaid and Bell, 1765. Hardcover. 2nd edition, corrected. 8vo, old calf, red spine label, good copy, rubbing and light wear to binding, some neat strengthening to front joint and to front inner hinge, rear flyleaf has been neatly excised, contents good to very good. With ownership signature of William P. Smith, and early American bookplate signed Johnston. As Thomas Johnston engraved bookplates for William Peatree Smith (1727-1803) one of the founders of the College of New Jersey (Princeton) and an important American educator who sided with the patriots during the Revolution, we feel confident in thinking that this must have been a book that Smith must have given to Johnston at some point. There are some other ownership marks, too, but a significant early American bookplate: Thomas Johnston (1708-1767) was a major American engraver of the period, and creator of the first historical American print published in America. xvi, 383 pp. Appearing 25 years after Hume's 'Treatise on Human Nature' this important refutation of Hume "inaugurated that radical misunderstanding of Hume which was to dominate modern thinking for well over a century." (Mossner's Life of Hume, 297-300). There are copies of Johnston's bookplate for Smith at Yale and Duke. Good.

Ames, Nathaniel
Boston: Printed and Sold by Printers & Bookfellers, 1765. Very good! Clean and crisp as per photos. An Astronomical Diary; Or, Almanack For The Year Of Our Lord Christ, 1766. Printed and fold by the Printers and Bookfellers with Paul Revere woodcut print 12 leaf / 24 pages. A very, very clean good original per photos.. This original 2nd edition includes on Page 17 a nice, original well printed very rare Paul Revere woodcut engraving that appeared in the first edition (which was issued by a different printer). The woodcut Ecliptic, featuring an eclipse of the moon, sun and earth is titled "Representation of the above Eclipse" and features a half-circle and numerous lines illustrating orbital paths and poles of the Earth. It is apparently the first use of his engravings in an almanack. In his introduction to the "Generous Reader" Ames acknowledges his father's high standard 'who was 40 years conversant with the public in this way". The introduction also contains an account of the discontent over the Stamp Act and says that God "will continue to defend us from foreign and domestic enemies, and STAMP with eternal infamy and disgrace, those who would oppress or tyrannize over us." He writes of the "Distressed circumstances" of the colonies people and notes the growing concern of the population over British policies. Note the poems above the calendars are the usual verses of mixed theme, but on January's is an appeal to "Columbian Genius" to "retain our dear bought liberties". This present book made him famous throughout Europe. In this work on the history of printing, one of the first studies on the subject, he claimed the honor of the invention of printing for the Dutch city of Haarlem and its printer Laurens Koster, following a tradition that originates in the 16th century. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

De Beaurain, Jean. (1696 - 1771).
The names of regions and regional powers crisscross the map: names such as ‚Champagne', ‚Palatinat', ‚Moaravie', ‚Brandeburg' and Prussia for example. The sites of the battles between the armies of the contesting coalitions are depicted. Mountains, rivers and urban centers are also shown, illustrating that this was a crowded theatre of war, while the illustrated complex political divisions of 18th Century Europe show that the war's script was equally baroque.A large decorative cartouche is located in the North Sea. The clouds of war give w … [Click Below for Full Description]

OSBECK, Pehr.
Rostock, Johann Christian Koppe, 1765. 8vo. Entirely uncut in contemporary speckled paper covered interim boards; pp. [6], xxiv, [2], 13 engraved plates; boards a bit worn, ocasional light spotting only, otherwise very good. First edition in German. A student of Linnaeus, the Swedish cleric Osbeck (1723-1805) was appointed chaplain on the Swedish ship Prins Carl, the first three-decker employed by the Swedes in the East India trade, on its voyage to China in 1750-1752; as Osbeck states in his preface, 'So tedious a voyage required some amusement [...] during all intermissions from our ordinary business. Every one chose something adapted to his taste; for my part I found nothing that could entertain more innocently both myself during the voyage, and my friends after my return, than natural history' (I, pp. xii-xiv). In addition to these observations, Osbeck also recorded other aspects of the countries which he visited, and his Voyage documents the ship's journey via Spain, the Canary Islands, Africa and Java to China, and the return passage via Ascension Island and the Sargasso Sea. The natural history specimens collected by Osbeck included some 600 new species of plants, which were incorporated into Linneaus' Species plantarum (Stockholm: 1753), and include the Osbeckia chinensis, illustrated in the present work as plate 2. Osbeck's account was first published in Swedish as Dagbok öfver en Ostindisk Resa åren 1750. 1751. 1752 ... (Stockholm: 1757) and was then translated into German by Johan Gottlieb Georgi under the direction of Daniel Schreber (himself a student of Linna … [Click Below for Full Description]

1765. Esemplare ben conservato con barbe. (Critica religiosa) (Voltaire). A Neufchatel, l' an 1765. Collection des lettres Sur les Miracles écrites a Geneve, et a Neufchatel par Mr. le Proposant Théro, Monsieur Covelle, Monsieur Néedham, Mr. Beaudinet, & Mr, de Montmolin. Prima edizione. In-8° antico, cartone coevo. Neg. sotto esot.
