Moore, John
C Barry, London, 1765. One of the earliest and scarcest of English pigeon books, preceded only by the original issue of John Moore's Columbarium in 1735, now more or less impossible to find. This book is essentially a re-issue of that by an anonymous pigeon fancier with some textual amendments especially as to the Almond Tumbler and with the addition of illustrations. With frontis and 12 other very nice copper engraved plates. Missing the plate of the Black Mottled Tumbler which Williams says was never considered quite satisfactory and is often found missing in later issues, so presumably removed by the publisher. Bound in contemporary half red calf, marbled boards. Covers worn and scuffed but solid. Owner's inscription on title page. A solid copy of a pigeon rarity. Williams p.14, Casey Wood P. 198. 143 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

YORC, Jacintho
Lisbon: Ignacio Nogueira Xisto, 1765. Chapbook report of the trial and sentencing of one Jacintho Yorc for the "tyrannical" murder of his young wife, Luciana Kin, in Transylvania in July of 1765. Much of the reportage centers around the sensationally grisly torture and execution of Yorc, who was burned with red-hot irons, his hands and feet chopped off, and, as coda, his heart cut out and fed to buzzards. Luciana's mother, desperately hungry for revenge, had a bite as well. Uncommon; copies located at Newberry and Harvard in the U.S., and PorBase reports another at the Biblioteca Nacional.

Giuseppe VASI (Corleone, 27 Agosto 1710 - Roma, 16 Aprile 1782)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1765. In … [Click Below for Full Description]

THOMPSON, Edward.
London: Printed for J. Harrison, 1765. 4to (250 × 195 mm), pp. [2], 48, without the half-title; eighteenth-century calf (probably a remboitage), sides with oval panels of contrasting shades, gilt, rebacked, worn. First edition. Thompson served with the Royal Navy throughout his career, though after the peace of 1763 he 'devoted his time to writing. During the remainder of his life he acquired a wide circle of political and literary acquaintances including John Wilkes, David Garrick, and Richard Brinsley Sheridan whom he apparently detested... His satires The Demi-Rep (1756) and The Meretriciad (1763), published anonymously, proved very popular, the former recounting the attractions of London society and its corrupting moral influence. These and several other pieces were collected in 1770 under the title The Court of Cupid.' The Courtesan, a bawdy satire on the subject of Kitty Fisher and other prominent London ladies, ran to three editions in the first year (ODNB).' .

1765. Essence of the Fourth Amendment [Warrants]. Considerations on the Legality of General Warrants, and the Propriety of a Parliamentary Regulation of the Same. To Which is Added, a Postscript on a Late Pamphlet Concerning Juries, Libels, &c. With Additions. London: Printed for W. Nicoll, At the Paper-Mill, In St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1765. Moderate toning, light foxing to some leaves, light soiling to title page. * Second edition, published the same year as the first edition. This pamphlet is part of the literature that attacked the use of general warrants, which granted unlimited powers of search and seizure to the courts. 1765.

(Voltaire)
No Editore. (Critica religiosa) (Voltaire). A Neufchatel, l' an 1765. Collection des lettres Sur les Miracles écrites a Geneve, et a Neufchatel par Mr. le Proposant Théro, Monsieur Covelle, Monsieur Néedham, Mr. Beaudinet, & Mr, de Montmolin. Prima edizione. In-8° antico, cartone coevo. Neg. sotto esot.

Derde Druk [Bound with:] Reize naer de Zuidzee, met het Schip de Wager, ... ondernomen in den Jaere 1740.', by: George Anson. Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740. Admiral of the Fleet George Anson, 1st Baron Anson PC, FRS, RN (1697 -1762) was a British admiral and a wealthy aristocrat, noted for his circumnavigation of the globe and his role overseeing the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War. Anson commanded the small British squadron sent at the beginning of the war with Spain to harass the Spaniards on the west coast of South America and cut off their supplies of wealth from the Pacific. Disasters and hardships plagued the expedition; most of the ships were lost around Cape Horn, and on the Chilean coast, and of a crew of 960, less than 350 survived. Eventually the Centurion alone was left, but Anson persevered and succeeded in capturing a gold-laden Spanish galleon near Manila. The prize he earned as a result settled his fortune for life. This is the official account of his voyage of circumnavigation, compiled from Anson's journals by Richard Walter, chaplain on board the Centurion, and revised by Benjamin Robins. Artists and Engravers: Author(s): George Anson. George Anson, 1st Baron Anson (Staffordshire, 1697 - 1762, Moor Park) was an Admiral of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

C***** rector of K**** W****. London: Printed for W. Flexney,1766, pp. [4], 39, [1], inscription to title 'Ra: Fetherston 1766'; title slightly soiled. Two works bound together, 4to (250 × 188 mm); nineteenth-century cloth; bookplate of George Redesdale Brooker Spain Second and sole editions respectively of two rare burlesque poems by William Cooper, rector of Kirby Wiske (North Yorkshire) purporting to be the work of one John Ellison, vicar of Bedlington (Northumberland). The Will involves a host of local characters from the Newcastle region, partially disguised through ellipses (which are helpfully elucidated in this copy in slightly later manuscript by one acquainted with the local scene). The ownership inscription to A Caveat... reads 'Ra. Fetherston' perhaps identifiable in the first poem ('To Featherstone that Good Old Man...') as Featherstone, Lecturer of All Saints, Newcastle. The London journals were not entirely impressed. 'As the wit of this performance is entirely local, and seems indeed to be included in certain initial letters and dashes, which we cannot pretend to explain; we can only advise the reader who is anxious to understand the whole, to make a small trip in the first collier bound to Newcastle, where, perhaps, he may discover the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Six poets are singled out in particular: Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, Ossian, and Pope; there are shorter notices of Denham, Cowley, Waller, and Dryden. "This is the first general history of New Jersey, and is a most valuable work on the early history of that colony. The author made much use of sources of information which are no longer available, and quotes some interesting letters by the early settlers. Although it contains occasional errors, it has always deservedly been considered a standard work, and is still the main source of information regarding the history of West Jersey. It contains much material illustrative of the relations which existed between New York and New Jersey" - Church.

Locke, John
A. Millar, London, 1765. First collected edition of John Locke's four letters concerning toleration, including the Epistola de Tolerantia. In 1686, Locke drafted a letter in Latin to his friend, which was published (probably by Limborch) in 1689" (Attig, p. 12). The Epistola de tolerantia was almos … [Click Below for Full Description]
