ZIMMERMANN, Eberhardt August Wilhelm von
Gottingen: J. A. Barmeier, 1765. First edition, extremely rare, of Zimmermann's first published work, a treatise on the analytic geometry of certain space curves formed by the intersection of two surfaces. This is Gauss's own copy, formerly held by the Gauss Bibliothek in Göttingen, and is signed 'Gauss' on the verso of the front wrapper. "Gauss (1777-1855) ranks, together with Archimedes and Newton, as one of the greatest geniuses in the history of mathematics” (PMM). Zimmermann was Gauss's teacher at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig from 1792 to 1795, and he must have made a lasting impression on the young Gauss. On 15 July 1849, in his reply to the Carolinium's congratulations on the 50th anniversary of his doctorate, Gauss wrote warmly of how much he owed to the institution, "but above all to the fatherly friendship of the noble Zimmermann, who promoted all his scientific efforts in every possible way" (ADB, translated). Born in Uelzin in 1743, Zimmermann was taught by Segner in Halle, by Euler in Berlin, and by Kästner in Göttingen. "He had made such significant progress in higher mathematics that he published a treatise on the analysis of curves in 1765" (ibid.). In 1766 he was appointed professor of mathematics and natural sciences at the Collegium Carolinum. Zimmermann was the author of works on a variety of subjects, such as mathematics, natural sciences, regional studies, and the history of discovery. He was made an honorary member of several scientific academies, including Göttingen, Bologna, London and St. Petersburg. He died in 1815. OCLC lists three cop … [Click Below for Full Description]

Smith, Samuel
Burlington, New-Jersey: James Parker, 1765. First edition of the first published historical account of the state of New Jersey; one of only 600 copies printed by James Parker on a press owned by Benjamin Franklin. Octavo, bound in full contemporary calf with a red morocco spine label lettered in gilt and raised bands to the spine. In very good condition. From the library of George and Rebecca Burr with their ownership names to the title page and front free endpaper, and later their grand-nephew Alfred Burr with his bookplate to the pastedown. In very good condition. One of the rarest and most valuable of the Jerseyana group, Smith's history was published in 1765 at Burlington by James Parker who had moved his printing press temporarily from Woodbridge for the purpose. David Hall of Philadelphia, whose name appears on the title page, sold the book at his shop. A century later, a second edition was published containing a brief sketch of its author and a map engraved by William Faden, London 1777. The original edition had no map. A third edition of the history was printed by the state of New Jersey and distributed to the schools and elsewhere in 1893. Samuel Smith was born of Quaker patronage at Burlington in 1720. He held important official positions in the province, and in addition to writing his history of New Jersey he prepared material for a history of Pennsylvania which was never published. Octavo, bound in full contemporary calf with a red morocco spine label lettered in gilt and raised bands to the spine. In very good condition. VOLTAIRE

Montesquieu lists a few major points in his work; points that have resonated with government for centuries. These include: · Separation of power · Liberty and democracy are one in the same · The point of civil and criminal law is to ensure personal security · Qualities and flaws of governmental types 'Spirit of the Laws' along with other works of Montesquieu were published as collection in 1765 by Arkstee and Merkus in Amsterdam. CORBRIDGE, James
London,: Printed for T. Bowles in St Paul’s Church Yard, John Bowles in Cornhill, and Robert Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street,, 1765. [c1765]. Engraved map, dissected and mounted on linen. James Corbridge was a surveyor in Norwich in the first half of the eighteenth century. He produced numerous estate plans but is best known for his large scale maps of Norfolk, Norwich and Great Yarmouth. His career began in Newcastle and amongst his early work is the first plan of the town. In the early 1720s he moved to Norwich and in 1730 he published his great large scale map of the county of Norfolk, the first to be printed. In 1735 he published this large single sheet reduction complete with extensive lists of the towns and villages in the county in surrounding panels. Each is keyed to the map and has their Hundred identified along with the distance in miles from Norwich. Circles of distance from Kings Lynn and Norwich radiate the map. The coastline is decorated with ornate images of seven boats and ships. Top centre can be found Corbridge’s dedication to Baron Walpole. The map is engraved to the scale of three miles to the inch, each grid marking three miles. The year after the publication of the larger map Thomas Goddard and William Chase published a pirated copy. In this reduction by Corbridge he could not resist having a go at them about the scale of miles stating lower right ‘I refer them to Mr. Chase and his Map (if they doubt my Scale of Miles which contains 1760 yards) for if I mistake not he has given three Scales to his Map which he calls Great Middle and Sma … [Click Below for Full Description]

SIDERIUS, Mattheus.
De theorie van de vesting-bouw, vertoont in de drie versterkings manieren van den heer Vauban. ...Leeuwarden, Abraham Ferwerda, Gerrit Tresling, 1765. 8vo. With 29 numbered folding plates (I-XXIX) and 2 folding letterpress tables (A & B). Contemporary mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spine. [16], 285, [2], [1 blank] pp. plus plates and tables. First edition, in the original Dutch, of a revised and modernized introduction to the methods and principles of fortification established by the greatest French exponent of the art, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707).
