Le Brave Capitaine Tyrrill dans le Buckingham de 66 canons... [TYRRELL]

1765. No binding. Good. circa 1765. Very early edition. This hand-coloured engraving was trimmed to the edges 292mm x 442mm ( 11.5" x 17 3/8") and mounted to a dark card stock. The trimmed mounted engraving has wear to the corners causing some minor rounding. There is surface dirt, soiling and spotting on the engraving more so on the sky area. Good condition. Full title [English & French] : The Brave Capt Tyrrill in the Buckingham of 66 Guns & 472 Men defeating the Florissant, Aigrette & Atlante, three French Ships of War, the 3rd of Novr 1758... N.B. The Florissant 74 Guns, 700 men, Aigrette 38 Guns 350 men Atalante 28 Guns 250 men: these ships were convoying Dutch Ships, with Provisions &c. to Martinico. Line below trimmed off."In 1758, while in command of the 'Buckingham', 64 guns, he intercepted a French convoy protected by the 'Florissant', 74 guns, and two frigates. The 'Buckingham', is depicted in the right background of the portrait, flying a commodore's pendant and a white ensign. When the 'Buckingham' frightened off the two frigates a spirited action between the French and British ship ensued. The 'Buckingham' lost her steering at the moment of victory and this enabled the French ship to escape. Tyrrel was wounded several times and lost three fingers of his right hand, a mutilation clearly visible in the portrait. The action was particularly creditable because the Frenchman carried over 200 men more than the 'Buckingham'. In the following year Tyrrel assisted Commodore Moore to reduce Guadaloupe and brought home the dispatches. After the peace he went out again as Commander-in-Chief at Antigua and died at sea while returning home. " Royal Museums Greenwich.

A haura-e display catalog with forty eight handpainted color & sumi designs for selection by patrons including thirty nine kachoga (flower and bird) landscapes. ***** The decorative designs reflect the refined and restrained iki aesthetic and were to be copied to the inner silk lining of the mid-length coat traditionally worn by men over the kimono, (the haura of a haori), using Yuzen starch resist technique. Some have interior and outer borders for the later application of gold and silver dust. Each design is on a sheet of handmade, 264 x 385 mm (10.39 x 15.16 inches) ivory mulberry paper and the sheets are side-bound without wrappers at crown and foot with the original antique copper, staple-like fasteners (hochikisu). *****

      - SEALS: no artist seals; one unidentified small cinnabar seal, rear of sheet 45. A machi-eshi (town painter working for privately owned businesses) didn't sign their work. CONDITION DETAIL: Colors: fresh and bright. No insect damage. Rear sides: customary pigment offset. Binding: excellent. Catalog formerly folded over and sheets retain a corresponding center fold indentation, shallow for center sheets, deeper at extremities and sheets are cockled with tip bends, some with minor corner creasing, last four with bottom tips bent back, Works 26 & 34 with a vertical crimp. Some sheets have trace bottom corner soiling, sheet 8 with a light top corner stain, Works 3, 4, and 18 with the stub from a label at the top tip, Works 32 and 34 have a few bleed-through pink spots: sheet 38 has toned top corners; sheet 40 with pink spotting, foot of inner margin, Work 29 with three characters in red at top corner. Work 1: greater corner wear, including vertical tears at bottom inner corner and a small hole at bottom outer corner, also some minor soiling including scattered spots along inner edge. Work 48: rear with a small bottom corner stain. PAPER: several thicknesses used. DESIGNS: Kachogas are in river, estuarine, coastal, and marsh settings with many bird species portrayed including: waterbirds, (red-crowned cranes, cormorants, Oriental storks, mandarin ducks, herons, and common kingfishers), shorebirds, (sandpipers, godwit and greenshank), the bush-warbler, Eurasian tree sparrow, varied tit, pheasant, rooster, northern goshawk, and sparrowhawk. Other designs include: spinning tops done with confection-like color, a striking group pantomime in silhouette, the light thrown by an early electric arc streetlight, koi, a wildflower garden with bamboo fencing, landscapes with chrysanthemum, black pine, plum tree, taro and lotus, a village in deep snow, and a pilgrimage to a Buddhist ceremony at a temple in the mountains. HIDDEN DECORATION: Even the use of silk for the inner lining of a jacket was a violation of the sumptuary laws but hidden decoration under the outer garment became commonplace in the Edo period among prosperous townspeople, as they sought to assert status while evading the restrictive sumptuary laws that forbade them to make public displays of luxury conflicting with the rights of the nobility. YUZEN: after Kyoto artist, Miyazaki Yuzen [d. 1765]. The design is first drawn with spiderworts juice on patterned cloth cut in kimono shape, the outline starched with rice paste to prevent dye bleed. Soybean juice is brushed on the kimono cloth to ensure good dye transfer. Customarily, one pattern is used for each color, with up to approximately 300 patterns being possible, permitting nearly any gradation of color. ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request. JOURNALS OF MAJOR ROBERT ROGERS: CONTAINING AN ACCOUNT OF SEVERAL EXCURSIONS HE MADE UNDER THE GENERALS WHO COMMANDED UPON THE CONTINENT OF NORTH AMERICA, DURING THE LATE WAR

London: Printed for the Author, and sold by J. Millan, 1765.. viii,236pp. Half title. Antique-style three-quarter speckled calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Scattered light foxing. Very good. First edition of this classic narrative of the French and Indian War. Rogers acted as a scout for the 1755 expedition against Crown Point, and in 1756 became captain of an independent company of Rangers. He made scores of raids against the French in New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, going as far west as the shores of Lake Huron. His exploits, detailed in this book, made him the most romantic and famous figure of the war in America. Rogers went on to briefly lead British rangers at the outset of the Revolution, raising recruits to fight against the American rebels. HOWES R419, "b." GAGNON II:1828. GREENLY MICHIGAN 16. BELL R366. Carlos Príncipe de Asturias, y de la Serenissima Señora Dña. Luisa Princesa de Parma [.].

[Madrid, s.i. n.a., c. 1765]. Commentaries on the laws of England.

Clarnedon Press 1765-1769 With the engraved "Table of Consanguinity" and folding "Table of Descents" in Volume II. Modern half - morocco and cloth boards, spine gilt in 6 compartments, a.e.g. With the bookplate of Louis E. Goodman on the paste - downs. An excellent copy. PMM, 212. FIRST EDITION of the author's great history of English law. Blackstone (1723 - 70) was the first to make the law accessible to the common person. "Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. If the English constitution survived the troubles of the next century, it was because the law had gained a new popular respect, and this was due in part to the enormous success of Blackstone's work" (PMM). "The Commentaries are not only a statement of the law of Blackstone's day, but the best history of English law as a whole which had yet appeared . . . the skillful manner in which Blackstone uses his authorities new and old, and the analogy of other systems of law, to illustrate the evolution of the law of his day, had a vast influence both in England and America, in implanting in the profession a sound tradition of the historical development of the law. . . ."

Concomitant with the growth of neurologic surgery these lesions have been attacked more often and by mid-twentieth century several series of such cases had been reported." R. Lewis Wright, Malignant Tumors in the Spinal Extradural Space - - First edition in book form of two publications that had originally appeared in the collection of prize dissertations of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin, and which are here corrected and much enlarged by the author. The first deals with the nature and properties of the nervous fluid and its influence on muscular motion, and the second with the sensibility of the meninges, and the insensibility of the brain and the structure of the nerves, ending with a criticism of Haller's theory of irritability. These texts are of importance for the theories of muscular contraction and nerve conduction at the time which preceded Galvani's experiments to stimulate muscles and nerves by electricity. De sedibus et causis morborum per anatomen indagatis libri quinque...

. Editio secunda. - Padua, Remondinim 1765, 2°, LXXXIV, 256, 388 pp., Portr., feiner Pergamenteinband d.Zt.; minimal fleckig, feines Exemplar.. "The study of pathology of the nervous system was initiated in the Eighteenth Century by Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682-1771), a pioneer pathologist and professor of Padua. Morgagni collected case material of many years, finally publishing his classic "e;De Sedibus"e; (1761) when he was seventy-nine years old. This work consists of five books of letters or chapters in which Morgagni recorded the postmortem findings along whith the clinical case notes. This was the first time that such extensive material was brought together, and it is the true foundation of pathological anatomy." - The first book, "e;Of Disorders of the Head"e;, may be the earliest work on neuropathology. It is divided into fourteen letters or chapters. The first consists of cases of pain in the head. The next four are on apoplexy, which Morgagni divides into three classes - serous apoplexy, sanguinous apoplexy, and apoplexy that is neither serous nor sanguinous. It is in these chapters that Morgagni first presents the pathological evidence that the lesion in apoplexy is on the side opposite to the paralysis. This oberservation substantiated the theories of Porfoir du Petit, Wepfer and others back to at least Aretaeus. Morgagni indeed gave credit to his teacher Valsalva in the Seventeenth Century for having first demonstrated the lesion on the opposite side in apoplexy." - "The sixth chapter in De Sedibus is on saporific disorders, and the seventh and eighth are on phrenitis and delirium and on madness, melancholy and hydrophobia. The ninth and tenth chapters deal with cases of epilepsy or convulsions and convulsive movements. The eleventh chapter is on paralysis, the twelfth on hydrocephalus and the last two chapters are on disorders of the eyes and ears. In the latter chapter Morgagni demonstrates for the first time that intracranial suppuration could be a consequence of infection in the ear. Morgagni's work, a landmark in medicine and neurology, stimulated great interest in the morbid anatomy of the brain as a cause of both nervous and mental diseases." McHenry, S.129f. - "Between his Adversaria anatomica of 1719 and De sedibus, et causis morborum of 1761, Morgagni had not published any major works. But the latter, published when he was seventy-nine years of age, had been years in preparation, and constitutes a foundation of modern pathological anatomy. Vast in scope, it is one of the most fundamentally important works in the history of medicine. In it he reports in precise and exhaustive details his findings in nearly seven hundred autopsy dissections, introducing and insisting on the concept that diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of disease must be based on an exact understanding of the pathologic changes in the anatomic structures. It put the final route to the old humoral pathology. Morgagni's contribution to the understanding of disease may well rank with the contributions of Vesalius in anatomy and Harvey in Physiology" Heirs of Hippocrates No. 501 - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 502: This second edition of Morgagni's landmark work contains additions and corrections to the first edition, but it is by no means a rewriting. Morgagni strove always to make simple what could become complicated descriptions, and his Latin is utterly lucid. - Waller 6673; Osler 1178. - Garrison & Morton No.2734 (1st. Ed. 1761): Classical descriptions of mitral stenosis (Letter III) and heart block. - Garrison & Morton No.2885 (1st. Ed. 1762): An authentic case of angina pectoris is recorded by Morgagni; he observed it in 1707.

Binding signed Anker Kyster. * Johann Hieronymus Kniphof (24 February 1704, Erfurt - 23 January 1763) was a German physician and botanist.
He studied medicine at the Universities of Jena and Erfurt, becoming a professor of medicine at the latter institution in 1737. In 1745 he succeeded Andreas Elias Büchner (1701-1769) as director of the library at Erfurt, two years later being named dean to the faculty of medicine. In 1761 he was chosen as university rector. At Erfurt, he assembled a large and impressive herbarium, about which in 1733, he first published a work with the title of "Botanica in originali", (later releases known as "Botanica in Originali, seu Herbarium Vivum"). Considered to be Kniphof's magnum opus, it would eventually be published in several editions. It was renowned for employing a preparation/printing technique known as "nature printing", which at the time was a little understood process that Kniphof had mastered in order to imprint details of various botanical specimens.
The most interesting feature is the way the botanical plates were printed. The plants to be reproduced were dried, flattened and then carefully pressed on inked flat surface then the plants, which had in this way been inked, were pressed on thin but strong paper, which resulted in off-setting of the prominent inked parts. The representations taken from the original plants were then carefully hand colored. The result was excellant and these reproductions could certainly not be bettered by any graphic process. For each specimen used only about five prints could be made maximium due to the wear on each specimen. Thus thousands of specimens were prepared and used to make these prints. Because of the difficult way of printing only a few complete copies were produced. There only seem to survive 10 complete copies with all 1200 plates, including those in Germany, one in the British museum and one in the United States. Fischer #7, Nissen, 1076. (Zuckerartbooks)..

The School of Fencing, With a General Explanation of the Principal Attitudes and Positions Peculiar to the Art -

London: Printed for S. Hooper, 1765 - The second edition, and the first edition with English text, of the "chief work in the English literature of fencing" (Castle, p. 212). Angelo's venerable School of Arms in London brought the French method of fencing to a wealthy and fashionable clientele. The school was run by successive Angelo generations until its closing in the early 20th century. The first edition of 1763 was printed in French only; this 1765 edition contains the same plates as the first edition with text in French and English. An edition entirely in English with reduced plates was published in 1787 Second edition, first edition with English text. Oblong folio. 47 engraved plates by Ruyland and Hall after J. Gruyn. English and French title-pages, dual-language text in two columns. Traité de la Couleur de la Peau Humaine en Général et de celle des Nègres en Particulier, et de la Métamorphose d'une de ces Couleurs en l'autre, soit de naissance, soit accidentellement.

      - Ouvrage divisé en trois Parties. Amsterdam (Rouen), o. D., 1765, 8°, (2), XIV, 191, (1) pp., Frontispiece von H. Gravelot, 2 Kupferstichvignetten im Text, unbeschnittenes Exemplar im weichen Pappband d. Zt. First edition of the author's interesting speculation of human skin and its many colours. It is here that Le Cat discerned the black deposits which he called "aethiops" in the nerve tissues of animals. - - "Claude Nicolas Le Cat's (1700-1768) treatise, like Mitchell's essay " An eassay upon the causes of the different colour of people in different climates" of 1744 , contradicts the traditional theory that bile is responsible for coloring human skin. Essentially, Le Cat's work is an extension of Malpighi's theory of skin color. From his experimental studies o the nerve cells of frogs and other animals (see Le Cat s Dissertation sur l'Existence et la Nature du Fluide des Nerfs et Son Action Berlin 1765), Le Cat discerned the presence of a pigment which he called "ethiops" (i.e. melanin). From this he deduced that human skin tissue must contain similar structures and that they may be the cause of skin color. Given me physiological association of "ethiops" with nerve tissue, it appeared to Cat that skin color could not possibly be determined by bile from the liver, pancreas, or gall bladder. While unclear of its origin and its role, he believed there was an intrinsic relation between these "ethiops" structures and the environment, noting that blacks had a greater amount than whites." Frank Spencer, Ecco Homo (1986), p.96 - Le Cat was also of the opinion that peoples' skin can change during their lifetime, and revert back the next generation. He details autopsies he performed where blacks become whites after being badly burned or whites that have become black 'accidental Negroes.' - - Le Cat (1700-1768) was surgeon to the archbishop of Rouen. He was a master of surgery, a lecturer on anatomy, and received the title of royal professor and demonstrator. He founded the Académie Royale des Science, Belles Lettres et Arts in Rouen, becoming its life-long secretary. Besides medical themes, his writings concern mathematics, architecture and philosophy. - - Sabin 39627. Hirsch-H. III 709. Cohen-Ricci 611. Lewin 301. Reynaud 299. Nicht bei Waller.
