It is a spirited masterpiece of technical writing, intended to explain to the layman the intricacies and nuances of the typographical art. The second volume is really a type specimen book, illustrating samples of approximately one hundred ancient and modern alphabets. It is also one of the most exquisite examples of French rococo book production, making use of Fournier's own printing types and ornaments. Updike's opinion of Founrnier's work is unequivocal "The Manuel Typographique is a work which no student of French typography can afford to be without."

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

apud Thomam Bettinelli, 1764. Rara edizione originale. Cfr. Sapori, 1222..

The History of Colony of Massachusetts-Bay. Volumes I-II.

Thomas and John Fleet 1764 - Boston, 1764-1767. 8vo, contemporary calf, 566 + 539 pp. With bookplates of Gordon Abbott. Ownership markings of Jonathan Sayward Barrell, merchant in York, Maine, as well as James Lloyd of Massachusetts, who signed the front free endpaper of first volume in 1765. A quite good set with very good contents, complete. Front board of of first volume detached, rear board of first volume nearly detached, one signature clipped from margin in Volume II, lacking front free endpaper in second volume. Remains quite good, complete, with bright contents. Genealogical notes of the Lloyd family on rear endpapers of first volume. "Hutchinson did not seek his role as an ally of the Crown. Rather, he was a vigorous and conventional defender of Massachusetts interests. He opposed, for example, the impressment of Massachusetts inhabitants by British naval vessels. In 1742 he confronted Captain William Scott on the deck of H.M.S. Astraea and demanded the release of one seaman and the hostage wife of a man Scott was attempting to impress. Hutchinson persuaded Shirley to intervene in their behalf. In 1747 Speaker Hutchinson mediated between a violent anti-impressment mob and the provincial government; the Massachusetts House approved such a strong anti-impressment resolution that the mob dispersed. Hutchinson's History of Massachusetts-Bay accurately recounted these events and contained sympathetic accounts of Puritanism; the Antinomian heresy of Hutchinson's ancestor, Anne Hutchinson; and Massachusetts opposition in the 1680s to the "tyrannical disposition" of the royalist governor, Sir Edmund Andros, and his administration's "harpies." Hutchinson's History acknowledged the multiplicity of jostling interest groups in Massachusetts and the duty of government to protect the public interest from the demands of self-interested groups like the advocates of an inflated money supply he had battled in the 1740s. Though Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) got credit for the Albany Plan of colonial union in 1754, Hutchinson played an equally important role in drafting the document." - ANB. Much Commentary On The Psalms Since Derives Either Consciously Or Implicitly, Directly Or Indirectly To Some Extent From His Lectures. Lowth Is Also Remembered For His Publication In 1762 Of A Short Introduction To English Grammar. Lowth's Dogmatic Assertions Appealed To Those Who Wished For Certainty And Authority In Their Language. Lowth's Grammar Was Not Written For Children; However, Within A Decade After It Appeared, Versions Of It Adapted For The Use Of Schools Had Appeared, And Lowth's Stylistic Opinions Acquired The Force Of Law In The Schoolroom. The Textbook Remained In Standard Usage Throughout Educational Institutions Until The Early 20Th Century.

The History of Kamtschatka, and the Kurilski Islands, with the countries adjacent; illustrated with maps and cuts. Published at Petersbourg in the Russian language . and translated into English by James Grieve, M.D.

printed by R. Raikes for T. Jefferys Glocester 1764 - 4to. (25.8 x 21.6 cm). Title, [6], 280, [8] pp., with 2 folding maps, 5 engraved plates (3 folding), old illegible stamp to title; 1 folding map bound upside down with short tear repaired, marginal repair to title and first page. Modern dark green morocco gilt. First edition of an abridged English translation of one of the earliest printed narratives about Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, and the first scientific account of Kamchatka. The translator was James Grieve (d. 1773), a Scottish physician employed in Russian service. Originally published in Russian in 1755, the work features a detailed discussion of the natural history, manners, customs and religion of the Kamchatkans: "The Russian Krasheninnikov started out across Siberia with Gerhard Friedrich Mueller and Johann Georg Gmelin, and then made his own way to Kamchatka. When Georg Wilhelm Steller arrived in Kamchatka to supervise his work, Krasheninnikov left in order to avoid becoming Steller's assistant, and returned to St. Petersburg. Krasheninnikov nonetheless was able to make use of Steller's notes in the preparation of his own narrative, and the inclusion of Steller's observations on America, made during his travels with Bering's second voyage, are an important part of this work, and constitute one of the earliest accounts of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Steller's account was not published until 1793. This is the first scientific account of those regions" (Hill).         A Collection of four defences made by Spanish military and naval officers of their conduct during the siege of Havana and its capture by the British in 1762

[1764] 1764 - [Madrid] In 1762 the British government decided to act against the Spanish who had entered on the side of the French in the Seven Years War, and sent a large naval and military force - ships of the line, transports, over ten thousand troops, including a detachment of American troops - to Cuba under the command of Admiral Sir George Pocock and the inexperienced Earl of Albemarle (land forces). The aim was to attack Havana and capture it. The city was protected by two strong forts, one of which, El Morro, commanded the harbour. Attempts to reduce it by fire from naval guns proved ineffective but it was eventually mined, and on 30 July 1762, the breach was stormed. The attack was then turned on the city which surrendered on 13 August. The loss of Havana was a huge shock to Spain and to Spanish imperial prestige. Havana was in fact returned to the Spanish after only a short period of British rule, but the cost was the loss of Florida and essentially all real power in the Caribbean. Shipped back to Spain on British ships were Field-Marshal Prado, the admiral Marqués del Reale Transporte, the Viceroy of Peru, don José Antonio Manso de Velasco y Sánchez de Samaniego, Field Marshal Diego Tabares, who had been governor of Cartagena in the Indies, and more than nine hundred others, including military, naval and civilian officials, who were put on trial under a Council of War of which the president was the conde de Aranda, the prosecution brought for the Crown by a Fiscal. The documents here offered print the charges (in italic) which are quite short, followed by the much longer satisfacciones. Details are given of the fortifications and military organisation of the Spanish, together with, as has been mentioned above, quite precise accounts of individual engagements and skirmishes. They are therefore an important source for this episode in colonial & Caribbean history The British library has four items connected with this affair. One (RB. 23.b.3769) is the Satisfaccion of Colonel Alexandro Arroyo de Royas, and the volume with pressmark 1324.i.9 contains three items, only one of which is also offered here (nos.37-39 in the volume) : the Satisfacciones of Field Marshal Juan de Prado (104pp.; with the same border as used in the Carlos Caro item offered here), of the Marqués de Real Transporte (ff. 74), dated at the end 30 April 1764, and of José Antonio Manso de Velasco, Conde de Superunda. The Bodleian also has a copy of that of the Real Transporte item. CARO, Carlos, Colonel. [Madrid 1764] [2], 134pp. Palau 44812 Caro sailed for Havana in November 1761 and arrived in Cuba in February 1762. His dragoons arrived at Havana in May 1762 and encountered the English on June 6. The document is full of very precise military details, numbers of men, horses, types of arms, use of peasant forces etc. There are a number of references to military writers : Folard's commentary on Polybius, Onosander, Vizconde del Puerto's Reflexiones militares, and others. The latest date is that of 21 October 1763 on p. 114 [HEVIA Y BUSTAMENTE, Gutierre Guido de], Marqueés del Real Transporte. [Madrid, 1764] ff. 74 Palau 251847 This work also contains

Robert Lowth (27 November 1710 - 3 November 1787) Was An Oxford Professor Of Poetry, Later Bishop Of Oxford, Bishop Of London, And Declined The Position Of Archbishop Of Canterbury Due To His Health. Lowth Seems To Have Been The First Modern Bible Scholar To Have Noticed Or Drawn Attention To The Poetic Structure Of The Psalms And Much Of The Prophetic Literature Of The Old Testament.
