PLUCHE, Noël Antoine
Paris: Les frères Estienne, 1764. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his landmark work of natural history 'Spectacle of Nature'. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit. Pluche, however, was not known for just 'Spectacle'. He wrote several other works including a large geographical concordance. This book, published in 1764, is an alphabetical concordance supplemented with 13 folding plates and maps.

[WALPOLE, Horace]
London: for Tho. Lownds, 1765 [but 1764]. London: for Tho. Lownds,, 1765 [but 1764]. Its influence on Poe is manifest, and it has survived in such novels as Bram Stoker's Dracula and in modern mystery stories and horror films." PMM Octavo (178 x 109 mm). Handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf in late 19th-century dark green morocco. spine in compartments with raised bands, blind rules, and gilt titles direct, blind-ruled border to sides, gilt rule to board edges and turn-ins, attractive marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a black morocco backed bookform folding case. Some trivial scuffs to extremities but the binding sound and in excellent condition, ownership inscription erased from head of title page, mild marginal offsetting to title and A2, occasional and minor marginal stains at lower edge through signatures H-N, a very good copy overall. First edition of this mock tale of medieval horror which initiated the vogue for Gothic romances. "Impressive theatrical effects included a gigantic heavenly helmet with magical powers, a bleeding statue, a sword that could only be borne by fifty men, an anchorite whose flesh had melted away to leave only an animated skeleton, and a portrait that strode out of its frame. The fascination with the fantastic was the same that created Strawberry Hill, but unrestrained by the requirements of bricks and mortar. It caught a tide of interest in exotic evocations of ancient and medieval cultures" (ODNB). The first edition was disguised as the translation, by one 'William Marshal, Gent', of an Italian work discovered in the library of an o … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROESEL VAN ROSENHOF, A.J.
1764. Volgens eigen ondervinding beschreeven . Kleemann. Uit den echten Hoogduitschen Druk . vertaald. Haarlem en Amsterdam, C.H. Bohn en H. de Wit, (1764-1788). 4 volumes (bound in 8) and supplement. Large-4to (275 x 220mm). With 3 handcoloured engraved frontispieces, 1 engraved portrait of Rösel and 385 handcoloured engraved plates (printed on 314 leaves). Contemporary half calf, spine with gilt lines and red and brown gilt lettered labels, marbled sides. A nice uniformly bound copy, including the rare supplement. This Dutch edition is more attractive than the original German edition, which was published in Nuremberg from 1746-1792. The Dutch edition is printed on almost twice as large, much thicker, paper, and has far better colouring. The translation was made by C. Kleemann, the son-in-law of the author. He added new material and the excellent colouring of the plates is by him and his wife Katharina Barbara Roesel von Rosenhof."Roesel, who studied at first with his father and then with his uncle Wilhelm, an animal painter in Merseburg, later became a pupil of the famous Preisler in Nuremberg. After living in Copenhagen from 1726 to 1728 he returned to Nuremberg for good, and there, besides painting portraits and drawings, he applied himself in particular to the study of nature. He collected insects, their eggs and larvae, studied the process of hatching, pupation, and emergence, and painted all this in a most meticulous way, as Kleeman tells us. His manuscripts, with 406 illustrations, are now in the Bayerische St … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes he joined the Dutch army and subsequently, in 1693, the Imperial army. Goulon considered attack and defence as inseparable and in his treatise all examples are presented from the viewpoints of both the attacker and the defender. As a pupil of Vauban and a veteran of the Siege of Candia, the longest siege in history, Goulon was considered an authority by his contemporaries. ROUSSEL DE LA TOUR.]
Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey, 1764. Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey,, 1764. Reinvigorating the physiocratic movement Octavo (159 x 95 mm). Contemporary marbled sheep banded with red and green, green morocco spine label, spine elaborately decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, red edges Half-title present. 20th-century pencilled notes to verso of front free endpaper. Minor wear around extremities, very occasional faint foxing and creasing to pages, else a highly attractive copy, joints and hinges intact. First collected edition, with the titular essay first published in an 8 page pamphlet the previous year. This "rare compilation" (Higgs) contains 16 of the author's tracts, run together continuously and not separated on the pages. Of these, the title essay is most important; "this tract, proposing a single tax, graduated in twenty groups of 100,000 taxpayers each, was the anonymous work of a young official. As it was allowed to circulate, the Physiocrats, who had been cowed into silence by the imprisonment of Mirabeau for producing his 'Theorie de l'Impot', 1760, concluded that they might now renew their activities. Quesnay encouraged Dupont de Nemours to reply to it in his 'Reflexions sur la Richesse de l'Etat'" (Ibid, 3000). The title page of this copy is erroneously dated 1761, altered in a contemporary hand to 1764. A later state is known with the title page corrected to 1764. Uncommon, with Library Hub listing six copies in British institutional holdings. Higgs 3270 for this edition, 3000 for pamphlet publication.

Seriman, Zaccaria]
These books were used as handbooks by Catholic and Franciscan leaders. "Collectio, sive, Apparatus Absolutionum...", like many of his other works, contains prayers, absolution, blessings, sacrament liturgy, and a section of performing exorcisms.

[New York: Manhattan.] Bellin.
Paris: From Bellin's Le Petit Atlas Maritime., 1764. Paris: From Bellin's Le Petit Atlas Maritime, 1764. Good margins and a strong impression. Light staining in the left blank margin; otherwise near fine. Image size: 8 1/2 x 6 1/2. This is the earliest obtainable map of Manhattan. The attractive small map of the southern tip of Manhattan appeared in Bellin's Le Petit Atlas Maritime in 1764. Portraying a heavily fortified city, Bellin's map is based on a manuscript map drawn in 1693. Although the 1693 map was severely outdated by the time Bellin published it, it apparently was the best map of the city available to him as he assembled his Atlas in 1764. Augustyn & Cohen note that this map is "the earliest printed plan of the city acquirable by the collector today..." Augustyn & Cohen: Manhattan in Maps 1527-1995: pp. 50-51. [ICN 3739.]

[Letter in Dutch to Nikolaus Joseph, Freiherr von Jacquin].Leiden, 13 September 1764. 4to (23.5 x 19 cm). Letter in Dutch, written on a single bifolium, with address: "Monsieur N.J. Jacquin Professeur en Chymie metallurgique à Chemnitz en Hongarie"; another hand has added: "Franco Frankfort". [4] pp. The letter is written by Laurentius Theodorus Gronovius or Laurens Theodoor Gronow (1730-1777) and addressed to his friend ("Waarde Vriend") Nikolaus Joseph Freiherr von Jacquin (1727-1817), a Dutch/Austrian physician, chemist and botanist who was born in Leiden and had studied medicine at Leiden University together with Gronovius. In the extensive and very interesting letter Gronovius touches upon various subjects (mining, mineralogy, botany, entomology), including the financial consequences, mirroring the difficulties in transmitting money to other countries at the time. He offers for sale 5 pounds of Tinkal (unpurified borax) which was used in the mining industry, and calls attention to ample supply of good tea in Leiden. Furthermore he urges Jacquin to send to him, via Leipzig, not only a specimen of the Sphinx atropus (deaths head moth), but also the chest he has asked for with specimens of various crystals needed for his studies. In return, he writes, he will send a big package of plants not yet identified and collected some decades ago in the Dutch East Indies by the well-known botanist Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716) and Theodor Sas (d. 1704), as well as plants from Surinam, Pennsylvania and The Cape.He will also send Jacquin his recently published second volume of his Zo … [Click Below for Full Description]

With an engraved illustration on both title-pages. Slightly later brown pastepaper boards. LXII, 272; XXXII, 224, 144 pp. First edition of the first educational work by the well-known German pedagogue and reformer Johann Bernhard Basedow (1724-1790). In his extensive preface to both parts Basedow lists the errors of the old forms of education and exposes his own views on perfect education, gradually expanding step for step from the understanding of the human condition and the system of nature to a full and free understanding of duty, morals and the truth of Christian religion. At the end of the second work Basedow added his own catechism in questions and answers, entitled Grundriss der Religion, welche durch Nachdenken und Bibelforschen erkannt wird, in Fragen und Antworten, nebst einige Zusätzen. Further added are daily prayers and reflections on God and his creation. Basedow applied all his ideas on enlightened religion to religious education of children. Dissertatio juridica inauguralis de substitutione vulgari.Leiden, Gerard Corts, 1764. 4to. With the title printed in red and black within an attractive engraved ornamental border by Noach van der Meer. Contemporary red velvet binding, blue silk endpapers. 35, [13], [2 blank] pp. Rare first and only edition, perhaps the only copy printed on silk, of the dissertation of a Dutch law student, Nicolaas Johannes van Hanswyk, for his doctorate, dated 22 June 1764. It was customary for students from rich families to have their dissertations printed in a limited edition, often with some copies luxuriously bound incorporating, for example, the coat of arms of the family. Here the dissertation was printed on silk and bound in red velvet. Considering the costs, Van Hanswyk probably had only a few copies, or perhaps only one, printed on silk. The dissertation deals with substitutio vulgaris (ordinary substitution), a legal term for the provision of substitute heirs in case the original heir dies or declines the inheritance. The dissertation is followed by some laudatory poems praising and congratulating Van Hanswyk, one in Latin and four in Dutch. With some faint water stains, especially in the last few leaves. Lacking last flyleaf, spine worn. Otherwise in very good condition. STCN 301865523 (2 copies, both printed on paper); WorldCat (1 additional copy).

Small 8vo (15.5×9.5 cm). With an engraved frontispiece and 8 engraved plates after Hendrik Immink, one for each fairy tale. Rebacked in modern half brown morocco. 227, [1 blank] pp. Rare early bilingual edition of the "Mother Goose" fairy tales of Charles Perrault, with parallel texts in English and French on facing pages. It includes "Little Red Riding Hood", "Blue Beard", Sleeping Beauty", "Puss in Boots", "Cinderilla"[!], "Little Thumb" (Tom Thumb) and two other Perrault tales. The added tale by Perrault's niece Marie-Jeanne l'Héritier de Villaudon, "The discreet princess", occupies the last 78 pp., also with parallel texts in English and French on facing pages. The present book is the only English edition of Perrault's tales before 1785 for which the ESTC records more than one copy: it records only 3 copies of the present issue and 3 copies of what may be another issue of the same edition. The frontispiece and 8 plates (one illustrating each Perrault story) are skilfully executed in a lively style, primarily by etching. They are more artistic than the earlier illustrations we have seen. There is a water stain at the head of quire N and the last 2 leaves. The book is otherwise in very good condition and the text and plates are well printed. The binding is slightly scuffed and rebacked, and has later endpapers. Böhme, Jakob. Behmen, Jacob.

Robinson, 1773 [vol. 3] and 1781 [vol. 4]. 4 vols. 4to, xxiii, 269, [6], 301, [20]; [iv], 195, [36], 120, 160, 32; [iv], 507, [26], 37; [6], 304, 218, [7] pp. With copper-engraved frontispiece portrait & 25 copper-engraved plates, 2 of them hand-colored, 2 double-page, and 4 with complex overlays (including one of the double-page plates). The remarkable plates are in fine condition with just one or two insignificant creases and closed tears to the intricate overlays. § First collected edition in English of the works of Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), the German mystic whose radical religious visions were an important source of inspiration to Quakers, Theosophists, German Romantics, and other free thinkers including William Blake. Böhme's controversial theology departed from its Lutheran foundation in the suggestion that the God is incomplete without Creation and that humanity's fall from grace was necessary and desirable as a precondition of our evolution to a new state of redeemed harmony, more perfect that our original state of innocence. This is perhaps the most important edition for the English-speaking world, as it was through this edition that writers like Blake and Coleridge dis … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
