Les Bonnets, ou Talemik et Zinéra. Histoire moderne traduite de l'Arabe.

London: Jacques-Francois Quillau, 1765. Duodecimo, contemporary sprinkled calf, flat spine banded in gilt. First edition: a strange Orientalist tale of Talemik and Zinera, royalty of the cosmopolitan Abbasid caliphate which ruled from Baghdad until the city was sacked in 1258.Although the novel itself is a fairly traditional oriental tale, its convoluted introduction shows an ingenious appropriation of the imaginary voyage: broke and unhappy, the narrator has sailed for India to make his fortune, trading iron and glass for money and pearls. Not content with such successful trading, he becomes general of a mercenary army, where he wields great power and further enhances his prestige, so that when he comes to leave he has amassed enough wealth to fill three vessels. Delighted, he decides to return to Europe, but rounding the Cape of Good Hope a vicious storm separates his three vessels and he is forced to abandon his ship. Happily, he soon beaches on a hitherto unknown island which, unusually for the imaginary voyage tradition, he maps relatively precisely at 25º latitude and 30º longitude (actually about one thousand kilometres into the Atlantic ocean from the South American coast, roughly level with Rio de Janeiro). Here, to his unending delight he is not only reunited with his two other ships, but is gifted this manuscript, written in Arabic, and which he believes to be so instructive and forceful that he feels it is the greatest part of his treasure: 'Tandis qu'on vend au Havre les fruits immenses de ma pacotille, je prends la poste, j'arrive à Paris, on m'imprime, & je ne crois pas certainement faire un mauvais présent à l'Europe'. Fine.

In the first work, dedicated to the Neapolitan regent Bernardo Tanucci, the Italian physician Michele Sarcone (1731?1797) describes the devastating gastrointestinal fever that struck Naples in 1764, the grim climax to several years of famine. Sarcone was a firm believer in autopsy to help diagnose the nature of such plagues. OCLC locates one copy in the United Kingdom (Edinburgh University Library) and three in the USA (Stanford, UCLA, and Library of Congress). There were two further editions, in 1802 and 1838. Sarcone's subsequent work on smallpox and its extirpation was left incomplete in a single volume. It is in two parts, with divisional titles, both titles stating "Tomo I". The first part contains a Prefazione and Memoria I and II; the second contains "Parte Prima", but no more was published. Register and pagination are continuous, with signatures: a4 A?Q8 [?]2 R?2H8.       FIRST EDITION OF VOLUME's 1, 3 & 4 SECOND EDITION OF VOLUME 2. 4 vols., square 4to., 11-1/8" x 9". Bound in recent full tan calf over cords, gilt lettered black morocco spine labels, with the 2 tables in volume 2 one folding, text clean and bright throughout. The most influential publication in the history of modern Anglo-American law. 'Since its first publication in 1765, Blackstone's Commentaries has exercised enormous influence over common law in England and elsewhere. 'Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine. If the English constitution survived the troubles of the (nineteenth) century, it was because the law had gained a new popular respect, and this was due in part to the enormous success of Blackstone's work. He did for the English what the imperial publication of Roman law did for the people of Rome' (PMM).

Fifteen engraved plates (on 8 sheets). 16 p.l., 520 pp. 4to, cont. sheep-backed paste-paper boards (head of spine a bit chipped), spine gilt, contrasting leather lettering piece on spine. Rostock & Greifswald: A.F. Röse, 1765. First edition. "The Theoria motus corporum related to the Mechanica. In the introduction to this work, Euler gave a new exposition of punctual mechanics and followed Maclaurin's example (1742) in projecting the forces onto the axes of a fixed orthogonal rectilinear system. Establishing that the instantaneous motion of a solid body might be regarded as composed of rectilinear translation and instant rotation, Euler devoted special attention to the study of rotatory motion...Euler thus laid the mathematical foundation of the numerous studies on variational principles of mechanics and physics which are still being carried out."D.S.B., IV, p. 480. Nice copy preserved in a very strong morocco-backed box. Early signature of N.P. Morville (?) on blank portion of title. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica. Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, pp. 105-06.

Lille: F.J. Jacquez, 1765. [bound with]:(-). Catalogue des Estampes et Tableaux du Cabinet de feu Mr. l'Abbé Favier, Prêtre, à Lille. 2 p.l., 143, [1] pp. 8vo, uncut. N.p. [but Lille]: 1765. The rare auction catalogues describing the important collections of books, manuscripts, prints, drawings and paintings formed by Abbé Favier at Lille. The great treasure of this extensive, but little-known, provincial French library was a copy, on paper, of the Gutenberg Bible (lot 1), which realized 2,025 frs, only 75 frs less than the Gaignat copy on vellum four years later; its subsequent fate appears to be unknown (see De Ricci, p. 33, no. 44 who lists it among the "exemplaires perdus"). The other outstanding feature of Favier's collection was his group of works on the history of the Netherlands, including Lille (lots 4,768-5,216) which Peignot praises as "presque complète." "Ces deux volumineux catalogues attestent le goût et les recherches immenses de l'abbé Favier: on remarquoit surtout dans sa bibliothèque une collection presque complète des ouvrages relatifs à l'histoire des Pays-Bas et à l'histoire de Lille. La littérature étrangère y étoit aussi très abondante."-Peignot, p. 98. Favier also owned a collection of 104 paintings, 42 drawings and 2,163 prints, described here in the second catalogue. It was sold in the same month. Fine copies preserved in a box. ? I. Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions.1643-1830, 182-"According to Danchin, eager Lille booksellers distributed the catalogue before it could be approved by the censors, and the auction was nearly cancelled by the authorities over the inclusion of heretical and licentious books, 26 of which were eventually removed from the sale."         California, Baja Peninsula] Karte van het Westelyk Gedeelte van Nieuw Mexico en van California Volgens de laatste Ontdekkingen der Jesuiten en anderen

Isaak Tirion, Amsterdam 1765 - Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in excellent condition. A very attractive and detailed map of the American Southwest and Baja California, by a respected Amsterdam cartographer This highly detailed map, with beautiful full original colour embraces the area from what is now central Arizona and southern California down to Sonora and the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. The map depicts the region during an especially fascinating time in its development. The Baja Peninsula and Sonora are shown to be dotted with Spanish garrisons and Jesuit missions established in the wake of Father Eusebio Kino who explored the area in the late 1600s. Kino was also the first cartographer to definitively establish that California is not an island, as previously thought. The notations on the map refer to various episodes in the exploration of the region. The shores of the Peninsula and the Sea of Cortés are charted in finely assured detail as are the courses of the lower Colorado and Gila Rivers, the latter running near the present-day site of Phoenix, Arizona. With reference to what is now known as southern California, the map depicts the Channel Islands, and extends past "Kaap St. Diego" up towards modern-day Los Angeles, however the shape of the coastline seems to be based more on conjecture than on actual discovery. The first mission in Alta California, San Diego (founded 1769), was yet to be established, and accurate charting of the region by such figures as the Comte de La Pérouse were still to occur a generation into the future. The present map was included in Tirion's well-regarded Nieuwe en Beknopte Hand-Atlas . Lowery Collection, 498; Phillips, A List of Maps of America , p.494 and Atlases , 600-102; Wheat, TransMississippi West, 148; Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast of America , 608.

Philadelphia: William Bradford, 1765. [2],xiii,71pp. plus two plates (one folding). Pp.65-71 and the plates provided in facsimile. Without the large folding map. Quarto. Contemporary calf, tooled in blind, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Boards somewhat stained and rubbed. Scattered foxing. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on titlepage and endpapers. Good. The very rare first edition. "This book is an authentic and reliable narrative of one of the earliest British military expeditions into the Territory northwest of the Ohio river. It narratives the details of the first victory, gained over Indian forces, by English troops, after the savages had been taught the use of fire-arms" - Thomson. Bouquet's expedition to relieve Fort Pitt showed British strength in the Ohio country in the wake of the close of the French and Indian War and brought an end to the Pontiac War. The Indians were soundly defeated at the battle of Bushy-Run and treated for peace, releasing captives taken in the previous years. Smith describes the campaign, gives an account of the country, tells of Indian warfare, and how to fight against them. The folding plan, by Thomas Hutchins, details the battle of Bushy-Run. This copy lacks the large folding map by Thomas Hutchins, which is often the case. The titlepage, however, bears an interesting association inscription, which reads: "Genl Haldimand's gift to Col. Putnam." The general in question is undoubtedly Frederick Haldimand (1718-1791), British colonial official and military officer, and the replacement for Henry Bouquet. "During the Seven Years' War, Haldimand demonstrated his military proficiency as well as the qualities of diligence and loyalty that characterized his service to the British crown. ... Haldimand's excellent service record and his command of French made him invaluable to Brigadier Thomas Gage, commander of the British forces in North America. In 1760 he was given the responsibility of liaising with Governor Vaudrieul and François de Lévis to accept the capitulation of Montreal. Later he was appointed military governor for the district of Trois- Rivières. He provided competent administration of the district but was removed in September 1765. A discouraged Haldimand now received permission to travel to Europe with the expectation that further promotion in the military was now at an end. However, before he could return he received news of the death of his fellow officer Henry Bouquet. He was now promoted brigadier- general, and replaced Bouquet as commander of the southern department. In many ways his experience as a military commander in East and West Florida foreshadowed the challenges of his tenure as governor of Quebec. Despite a parsimonious and neglectful Treasury, a careless Colonial Office, and the tumultuous politics of a frontier colony, Haldimand provided a competent administration between April 1769 and his departure in 1773" - ANB. Likewise the colonel in question is almost certainly Israel Putnam, colonial military officer and Revolutionary War hero. The two men were acquainted and worked together during the French and Indian War, particularly in the campaign at Oswego in 1759. A battered copy of a rare book, particularly interesting for its association of two military commanders associated with the events in question. EVANS 10167. SABIN 84616. HOWES S693, "c".       - SIGNATURE "Thom. Wharton, Chman", a Pennsylvania merchant and politician during the Revolutionary War era, served as the first President of Pennsylvania after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Like many other Colonial merchants, Wharton joined boycotts in protest of the 1765 Stamp Act and the 1767 Townshend Acts. On May 20, 1774, Wharton was chosen as a member of the Committee of Correspondence and later was one of the twenty-five who formed the Committee of Safety, Pennsylvania's governing body in the early days of the Revolution. On July 24, 1776, he became president of that body and helped draft the state's new constitution, which was adopted on September 28, 1776. Wharton died in 1778.
