(1), 20, 511 p. Frontispice + 14 engraved plates. Small 4to. Contemporary full calf, four raised bands, gilt at spine.A wide margin copy, frontispiece a bit soiled, expertley restored to the margin, a few stains, but else very good (see photos).Fifth edition, extremely rare, of "one of the most curious devotional books published by missionaries from Brazil." (Borba de Moraes). OCLC lists only 2 copies of this edition (Loyola University of Chicago, Universidad de São Paulo). Alexandre Perier, born in Turin around 1651, was a Jesuit missionary in Brazil for more than thirty years, serving as Father Superior at Paraiba and Cabo Frio, also procurator of missions. In 1722 he was still alive in Italy, but little else is known about him. In his introduction, Perier explains that the plates shown in his book had been very effective in the evangelization of the Brazilian Indians, who were horrified at the depictions of the torments of Hell and so forced into conversion. After five successful editions the work was finally banned by the Inquisitorial censors through the edict from 1771, for propounding erroneous doctrines and misleading interpretations of the articles of Faith. This fifth edition from 1765 is the one confiscated by the Edital. The work has 14 plates beside the frontispiece. Three were done by Guilhermo Francisco Laurenco Debrie, a prolific artist who normally used a more conventional style; three more are signed by one "J. Matheo," who worked with Debrie on another volume but is otherwise unknown. The work is distinguished from others of the same kind not only by its formidable illustrations, but also by its exceedingly threatening tone. "The fact that it was banned, and 'prohibited to all bookdealers, printers, and other persons; to sell, print, have, distribute, and spread, in any form or manner whatever,' explains its rarity, and the fact that it is so little known."Borba de Moraes II.660-62; cf. Innocencio I.39 (describes only the first edition published in Rome 1724, and refers to a second published in Lisbon)

Small 8vo (14 cm; 5.5"). [15] ff., 682 pp., [1] ff. First edition of this important book for the study of the Araucanian language (i.e., Mapuche or Mapudungun) of Chile. The contents are a grammar, a dialogue in Araucanian, a short Spanish-to-Araucanian dictionary, the Araucanian alphabet and dipthongs, and Catholic prayers, doctrine, and a brief catechism in Araucanian, plus extended Spanish–Araucanian and Araucanian–Spanish dictionaries. Febres, a Jesuit, was a native of Cataluña who arrived in Chile at a young age. His work among the Araucanian Indians led to his acquiring a great command of their language, and this work still stands as a monument to his erudition. Medina's researches discovered that when the Spanish authorities made their inventory of the Jesuits' library in Chile in 1767, only 255 copies of this book were found, leading him to suppose that the total press run was only 500 copies.    The title-page and the rest of the initial half-signature of the copy in hand are => printed in red and black, but according to Harper (American Iberica, item 476A) some copies do exist printed in black and gold (!), while Medina (Bibliotheca hispano-chilena) says he has seen copies printed in black and green, or perhaps just green. The final leaf here displays a typographic sampling of the press's fonts. There are a few tailpieces — one unusual and a charmer.         Medina, Lima, 1228; Medina, BHC, 461; Viñaza 345; Palau 87065; Sabin 23968; Vargas Ugarte 1923; DeBacker-Sommervogel, III, 576. On Febres, see: Archivo biográfico de España, Portugal e Iberoamérica, fiche 309, frames 216–49. Contemporary stiff vellum, lacking ties; a bit warped. Title-page expertly restored along outer margin and several letters of the title now present in good facsimile, with the leaf backed. Front hinge (inside) starting but strong. Interior generally clean with the odd spot or old stain only.

Original Poems on Several Subjects. In Two Volumes .

Printed for Mss. Hawes, Clarke, and Collins . [Vol. 2: Edinburgh: Printed by A. Donaldson and J. Reid. Sold by Alexander Donaldson, at his shops in London and Edinburgh]., London 1765 - First edition. Despite the mixed London/Edinburgh imprint it is clear that both volumes were entirely typeset in Scotland: the type ornaments and title vignettes are identical. Donaldson and Reid evidently printed a certain number of copies for Hawes et al. in London, but were not scrupulous about making sure all volumes had the correct imprint. This set is as issued. This is an unusually good series of poems, by a Scottish medical man clearly the product of his enlightened century. Some subjects seem entirely modern, e.g. 'The Monopolist' ('Sapo, condemn'd to love of gain, / Tortures for it his little brain'.) or, 'An Elegy on the Cutting down of an Oak', or 'The Triumph of Vice. A Fragment'. There are several literary poems, including elegies on Joseph Addison and Edward Young, and a long satire called 'Poetical Characteristics; or, an Estimate of the Advantages of Rhyming. In Three Cantos', which pokes fun at Pope, Gay, Gray, Johnson, the author's Scots contemporaries Blacklock and Ogilvie, and even at Lord Kames: 'With Kames's eye Lyncean view/ And pierce all Nature through and through'. 2 vols, 12mo (168 × 100 mm), pp. xviii, [1], 270, [2]; 322, [2]; complete with half-title to vol. 2 (not called for in vol. 1); titles with identical woodcut ornaments, other typographical ornaments; occasional very minor spotting or browning; uniform contemporary vellum backed blue boards, red morocco spine labels; rubbed, spines soiled, but a very good copy. [ESTC: (Edinburgh imprint:) BL, NLS, Bodley, St. Andrews, Columbia, Harvard; (London imprint:) NY Academy of Medicine, Rice, Library of Congress, UCLA, Otago.] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

23 pp. Large 4to, orig. marbled wrappers bound in later cloth. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1765. First separate edition, an offprint with new pagination. Guettard (1715-86), who served as curator of Réaumur's natural history collections, was elected to the Académie Royale des Sciences as an adjoint botaniste. He is most famous for his discovery of the volcanic nature of the Auvergne and his attempt to construct a geological map of France in collaboration with Lavoisier. Guettard played an important role in the development of the porcelain industry in France. About 1750 the Duc d'Orléans founded a laboratory, under the direction of Guettard, in order to discover the art of making hard or Chinese porcelain. Having examined samples of the rare materials sent from China, Guettard determined that kaolin and petuntse near Alençon could be used. In the present work, Guettard describes his findings. The discovery of kaolin in France enabled the porcelain industry to finally successfully replicate the hard-paste porcelains of China which had for centuries been considered the finest in the world. This great discovery led to the enormous development of the porcelain industries of both Limoges and Sèvres. A year later, Brancas (1733-1824), Comte de Lauraguais, scientist and Academician, disputed the claims of Guettard regarding the discovery of kaolin, in his Observations sur le Mémoire de M. Guettard concernant la Porcelaine. Brancas claimed that he was the first, in 1758, to make French hard-paste, also using kaolin from Alençon. Tipped-in is a one-page autograph by Guettard regarding the transport of kaolin and difficulties with the customs agents. Fine copy and rare. Bookplate of Frederic Cheron. ❧ D.S.B., V, pp. 577-79. Poggendorff, I, 973-74.

Brunet I, col. 1258; James Ford Bell B-426; Sabin 7935. The illustrations show ordination, induction, baptism, communion, marriage, exorcism, an agape feast and other activities in the Moravian Church, as well as their missionary work among black slaves in the West Indies (2 plates), American Indians (probably in Pennsylvania) and native Greenlanders. With the gold-stamped leather armorial bookplate of Noé de Salvert.

Finely engraved frontis., engraved vignette on title, 11 fine chapter head-pieces, & 18 engraved plates. 1 p.l. (the frontis.), 264, [9] pp. 4to, cont. speckled half-sheep & speckled boards, orange leather lettering piece on spine, old blue painted label numbered "136" in bottom spine compartment. Augsburg: C.H. Stage, 1765 [frontis. dated "1767"]. First edition of this finely illustrated work on Augsburg, which pays particular attention to the artistic activities of the city. Stetten (1731-1808), was one of the most notable personalities of 18th-century Augsburg, active in city government and the arts. He wrote several other works on different aspects of the city, its history, and most notable residents as well as literary works. Stetten provides here not just a history of Augsburg but detailed accounts of the most important printers of the city, buildings, the leading artists, commercial and banking activities (much on the Fuggers), leading scientists and engineers, artisans, engravers, goldsmiths, collectors of art, chemists, musicians, architects, manufacturers of weapons, etc., etc. The 18 plates, each with two scenes, depict notable moments in the history of the city. Fine copy printed on thick paper. The frontispiece and the headpieces are particularly attractive.

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charl [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Octavo (198 x 120 mm). Contemporary French cats-paw calf, gilt spine decorated with floriate motifs (grape-and-vine tools at foot), red edges, marbled endpapers. Eight engraved folding plates of naval manoeuvres, typographical head-pieces and wood-engraved tail-pieces. Binding only lightly rubbed. An excellent copy, crisp and clean, with the terminal advertisement leaf. First edition of this important influence on the development of English naval thought; "divided into 4 pts: manoeuvring of ships, evolutions, miscellaneous marine matters, signalling, and also a glossary of terms. It was later translated by David Steel and incorporated into his Elements and practice of rigging and seamanship [1794]" (Craig). "Though less illuminating on fundamental principles than Morogues its methods of handling a fleet are more fully elaborated, and it ends by heralding the final reform with an explanation of the system of numerary signals devised and practised by that all too little appreciated genius Mahe de la Bourdonnais, under whom the author must have served in India." (Corbett, Signals and Instructions, 1776-1794, NRS Vol.XXXV). Despite Kempenfelt's efforts (he produced a translation of the signal portion of the book in 1781), a full translation into English was not made until 1788. Provenance: ownership inscription verso of first blank, and elegant engraved book label to front pastedown, of Devis Decrès, future minister of the navy under Napoleon. Decrès had a brilliant career, a midshipman in 1779, he took part in operations in the Caribbean from 1780 to 1783, promoted to ship's ensign in 1782 at the time that he took part in the Battle of the Saintes. His ownership inscription gives his rank as lieutenant, placing purchase of this volume between 1786 and 1793, when he became a captain. Arrested as a noble at the outbreak of the French Revolution, he was reinstated in 1795 and placed in command of the Formidable, and in her took part in the attempted invasion of Ireland in 1796. He was promoted to contre-amiral in 1798 and commanded a light squadron during the invasion of Egypt, covering the landing in Malta. He took part in the Battle of the Nile in the Diane, managing to avoid the slaughter, and escaping to Malta, raising his flag in the Guillaume Tell. He was captured trying to break the blockade, and eventually exchanged back to France in August 1800. Napoleon personally presented him with an honour sabre, and appointed him maritime prefect at Lorient. From 3 October 1801 to the fall of the Empire in 1814, he served as Napoleon's Minister of the Navy, being made a duke in April 1813. During the Hundred Days Decrès briefly resumed his post as Minister of the Navy. He died in a house fire in 1820. Scarce commercially and uncommon institutionally: Copac cites copies at five British and Irish institutional libraries (BM,Cambridge, Scotland, NMM, University College London), OCLC adds 17 institutions worldwide. A lovely copy in period calf with a distinguished provenance.

The Traveller, or a Prospect of Society. A Poem. Inscribed to the Rev. Mr. Henry Goldsmith.

Printed for J. Newbery., London 1765 - First edition, Roscoe's second issue, Fleeman's fourth state. First published in December 1764 Goldsmith's philosophical poem is the first of his works to bear his name on the title-page. Taking its cue from from the French philosophes the poem is recounted by a lonely wanderer observing the character of the inhabitants of the nations, noting the effects of climate and the deleterious influence of wealth and luxury.'Where wealth and freedom reign, contentment fails, / And honor sinks where commerce long prevails'.Samuel Johnson contributed lines 420 and 429-38 (and reviewed the work for the Critical Review, Dec. 1764). Goldsmith made numerous early revisions and this copy is an example of the fourth state (Fleeman). 4to (285 × 212 mm), pp. [4], iv, 22, [2], complete with half-title and final advert leaf; uncut and stitched, browning to half-title; preserved in a green morocco chemise and slipcase, lettered in gilt . [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition 3 illustrated fine engravings from Plover engraved by Le Mire, repeated title vignette and two headers. Binders full glossy and marbled calf. (back of half-title: printed by [George-Adrien] Crapelet), 1827. Large 4to (32 x 23 cm).) With 70 hand-coloured engraved plates. Later 19th-century red half morocco, red textured cloth sides, gold-tooled spine, decorated endpapers printed in gold on white, gilt edges.

Brunet III, col. 795; Colas 1765; Hiller, p. 526; Lipperheide 1077. First edition of a series of 70 beautifully coloured plates of European women's costumes from the 12th to the 18th century. Most plates were engraved by George-Jacques Gatine after paintings by Louis Marie Lanté; the descriptive text is by Pierre de Lamésangère. The text briefly describes the lives of the women portrayed and often includes a descriptions of the clothes worn, which makes the series an interesting survey of fashion design. It showcases "vertugadins" (farthingales, said to have been introduced in France by Eleanor of Austria), "mouches" (beauty marks), chaperons, "pianalles" (flat shoes), hair-styles, hats (including the typical hennin), etc. One plate with a small tear, foxed throughout, the plates slightly browned, hinges reinforced. Binding professionally restored. A very attractive record of seven centuries of fashion design.
