      - 3 manuscript volumes listing plants growing in the Schönbrunn gardens. Together about 450 pages. 8vo. 2 vols. 185 x 112mm and a third volume slightly smaller. Contemporary calf (2 vols.) and contemporary vellum. The 3 volumes are from the famous collection of Ernst Moritz Kronfeld (1865-1942), botanist, writer and collector. Kronfeld decribed the 3 volumes as follows "Auch Hofgärtner Richard van der Schott dokumentierte das botanische Wissen seiner Zeit in drei wertvollen Manuskriptbänden. Die Manuskriptbände sind auch heute noch wissenschaftsgeschichtlich relevant - dokumentieren sie doch die verbreitung von und das Wissen über Pflanzen sowie die Bedeutung Schönnbrunns innerhalb der botanischen Gärten der europäischer Herrscherhäuser" (Schriftenreihe der Kommission für Provenienzforschung 5 pp. 31-70).Richard van der Schot (1733-1790) of Delft (Holland) was appointed head gardener by Emperor Franz I of the Botanical Gardens at Schönbrunn. Van der Schot had taken with him a great number of exotics purchased from different nurseries in Holland. In 1754 he accompanied Nikolaus Joseph Jacquin to the West Indies to collect plants for the Schönbrunn Garden, the so called Holländischen Garten. In August 1755 the first consignment of plants from Martinique arrived at Schönbrunn and in 1756 van der Schot returned from Martinique with a considerable number of trees and shrubs. The 2 volumes bound in contemporary calf have a manuscript card glued in, as already mentioned above, 'Manuscript des Schönbrunner Hof-Gärtners.' followed by a manuscript title 'Index Systematis Vegetabilium transcriptus a Richardo van der Schot, ex editione decima tertia a 1774.'. The third volume 'Richardus van der Schot.' see above, has many plant names in Dutch and starts with 'November Anijers die den 25 zijn aan gekomen van Buelinck.'. As Van der Schot remained head gardener during the years 1759 to 1780 the plants listed in the manuscript volumes must concern plants growing in the Schönbrunn Gardens, the most splendid botanical garden of the period. On numerous occasions slips have been added and glued in to add new plant names.See also S. Madrinan, Nikolaus Jospeh Jacquin's American Plants. Botanical Expedition to the Caribbean (1754-1759) and the publication of the Selectarum Stirpium Americanarum Historia. Leiden 2013.

Manuscript on paper, in Portuguese.

[Rossas?], @, 1759. - Large 4° (24 x 17.5 cm.), contemporary mottled sheep (some wear, but sound; single pinpoint round wormholes to front and rear covers), spine gilt with raised bands in six compartments, covers with borders ruled in blind, rectangular black morocco lettering piece on front cover with roll-tooled gilt border, text block edges sprinkled red. Double-ruled border in brown ink on every page that has text and on otherwise blank rectos or versos of pages with text. Manuscript in ink, in a tidy, legible hand of the mid-eighteenth century. Some soiling. Some quires loosening. Well used, but overall in good condition. Rubric in ink at upper outer corner of every page that has text. Wax stains from a number of seals; one survives, with paper covering, on 35th leaf verso. (40 ll. with text, 42 blank ll.). *** These apparently unpublished manuscript statutes are for the Irmandade das Almas in the freguesia (parish) of Rossas, situated in the concelho of Arouca, in the greater metropolitan area of Porto. They were copied by many hands, most quite legible; many original signatures are included. The Irmandade das Almas was established "para suffragio das almas" (Chapter XXII). Several of the chapters in its statutes deal with burial of the dead, whether members of the order, peregrinos who die in the parish (Chapter VIII), or the poor (Chapters XX, XXII). Chapter IX makes provisions for members of the Irmandade who fall ill. Chapter XV decrees that members of the Irmandade shall pay an annual fee of 60 reis; if they cannot pay the full fee when it is due, arrangements will be made.Confrarias, also known as irmandades, were very popular in Portugal during the first half of the eighteenth century. Lisbon had just over two hundred in 1742, and any town that had at least a hundred citizens usually had such an association. They fulfilled an important social function, guaranteeing that funeral services (sometimes quite elaborate) would be arranged for the dead, and that prayers would be offered for them. Growing funeral expenses and the horrific Lisbon earthquake of 1755 led to the merging of many irmandades for financial reasons. The rise of institutions willing to loan money at a 5% interest rate also lessened their importance, as did the Marquês de Pombal's changes to the political system. The confrarias and irmandades languished for well over a century, with many disappearing, but the implementation of the Estado Novo after May 28, 1926, combined with the increased power of the Catholic Church, led to the resurgence of those associations which had survived.*** On confrarias, see Pedro Penteado, ?Fontes para a História das Confrarias: algumas linhas de orientação para uma pesquisa na Torre do Tombo? in Lusitania Sacra, 2.ª serie, 7 (1995) 151-180.         Fine etching of performers in a contemporary production of Handel's Flavio at the King's Theatre in London in 1723

A very good impression overall of a rare and historically important print depicting three of the most famous singers of the day. There are relatively few early 18th century images with any historical basis depicting prominent singers in performance.. 190 x 266 mm. + wide margins. Printed on heavy laid paper. The singers depicted include the famous castrato Bernardi Senesino (?-1759), the soprano Francesco Cuzzoni (1696-1778), and the alto castrato Gaetano Berenstadt (1687-1734). With pencilled notes to lower margin incorrectly naming Farinelli as one of the singers and the opera as being Handel's Julius Caesar. Some light browning, mostly to right outer margin; a little minor foxing.

Napoli, 1759. Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, b/n, cm 57 x 82,5 (alla lastra), cm 66 x 93,7 (il foglio). In basso a destra ?Carlo Nolli Reg. Sc.?; in basso a sinistra: ?D' Luigi Vanvitelli Reg. Primario Arch. inv. e dis.?.

THE CHARTER GRANTED BY THEIR MAJESTIES KING WILLIAM AND QUEEN MARY, TO THE INHABITANTS OF THE PROVINCE OF MASSACHUSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND

Boston: S. Kneeland, 1759. Modern half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Very minor shelf wear. Bookplate on front pastedown. Titlepage lightly toned, top half-inch trimmed away. Light toning and some foxing throughout. Else very good. A fine mid-18th-century collection of the laws of Massachusetts. As is often the case with this and earlier collected editions, this copy includes the separately issued CHARTER (here bound first) and the full compilation of laws for 1759, with the addition of twenty- six subsequent separately printed session laws through 1770. Among the acts printed here are the Stamp Act, as well as the act indemnifying those afflicted by the Stamp Act. The miscellaneous acts and laws provide a massive body of New England legal, social, and economic information. They paint a vivid picture of the development of the region, with the founding of towns and public works such as the building of the Plymouth lighthouse. But throughout, the presence of tariff acts and taxes map the route to the American Revolution. Charter: EVANS 8400.         The Great Charter and Charter of the Forest,

Oxford: At the Clarendon Press,, 1759. with other Authentic Instruments; to which is prefixed an Introductory Discourse, containing the History of the Charters. Folio (349 × 265 mm). Contemporary red morocco, black morocco label to the spine, compartments gilt with thistle and acorn tools, boards elaborately gilt with a broad panel composed of dog-tooth rolls, floral, foliate, star and bird tools, similarly constructed large central lozenge to both boards, all edges gilt, foliate roll to board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Engraved dedication leaf with the arms of the earl of Westmoreland, historiated initials, 10 large engravings of seals to the text, 2 intricately engraved tail-pieces by John Sebastian Miller, and extra-illustrated with a copy of John Pine's engraving of the Magna Carta, hand-coloured and heightened with gold, mounted on linen, folded and bound in on a stub, opening 718 × 482 mm. A little rubbed, particularly at the extremities, head- and tail-caps chipped, label split and chipped with minor loss, light browning to the text, some contemporary inked underlines and marginal manicules, but overall a handsome, wide-margined copy. First edition. "A work of the highest importance for the historian and the constitutional lawyer and shows that Blackstone was a very competent and learned historical scholar" (Walker, Oxford Companion to the Law), and which won him election to the Society of Antiquaries. The volume contains the texts of fourteen mediaeval documents, tracing the history of Magna Carta from the Articles of the Barons in 1215 to the confirmation of the charter by King Edward I in 1300. It represents a pioneering piece of historical scholarship, being based on the examination of the original documents. "Most importantly, Blackstone was the first to publish an accurate version of the text of Magna Carta as issued by King John in 1215. In so doing, he was able to establish that the 1215 Magna Carta was significantly different from the version entered on the Statute Roll in 1297 (itself derived from the 1225 Magna Carta). Blackstone based his edition of the 1215 Magna Carta on the facsimile of the charter made by John Pine, collated with a copy preserved in the Red Book of the Exchequer Â… The Great Charter was not only a scholarly tour de force but a considerable aesthetic and technical achievement. Sold for the princely sum of 15 shillings, it was richly illustrated with detailed engravings of royal seals and historical scenes. The book's collation of the documents was at once representative of the humanist tradition of antiquarian legal scholarship, stretching back to the 16th century, and of more contemporary Enlightenment trends, which brought rigorous editorial methodologies to hitherto confused areas of study" (BL website). This copy, in what may well be a presentation binding - the identity of the original annotator being lost by the removal of an earlier bookplate to the front pastedown - has been much enhanced by the addition of a copy of Pine's spectacular reproduction of the Charter.

        The Theory of Moral Sentiments.

London: for A. Millar, and A. Kincaid and J. Bell, in Edinburgh,, 1759. Octavo (201 × 120 mm). Rebound in full calf to style, incorporating the original front and rear calf panels, spine ruled gilt in compartments, red morocco label, new endpapers. Complete with the half-title, with the errata on final leaf. Pp. 317-336 omitted, as issued. First and last leaf tanned around the edges from the original leather turn ins and strengthened with archival tissue. Five eighteenth and early nineteenth-century ownership inscriptions to the title, two crossed through and one extensively blocked out. Water stain to the upper margin, more extensive towards the end, some spotting and staining, but still a good copy. First edition, published in April 1759 with a recorded "print run of 1,000 copies" (Sher, Early Editions of Adam's Smith's Books, 13). Smith's first book and his later Wealth of Nations demonstrate "a great unifying principleÂ… Smith's ethics and his economics are integrated by the same principle of self-command, or self-reliance, which manifests itself in economics in laissez faire" (Spiegel). Smith's famous phrase is first used here that would be repeated in the later work: that self-seeking men are often "led by an invisible handÂ… without knowing it, without intending it, to advance the interest of the society" (Part IV, Chapter 1). "The fruit of his Glasgow yearsÂ… The Theory of Moral Sentiments would be enough to assure the author a respected place among Scottish moral philosophers, and Smith himself ranked it above the Wealth of NationsÂ…. Its central idea is the concept, closely related to conscience, of the impartial spectator who helps man to distinguish right from wrong. For the same purpose, Immanuel Kant invented the categorical imperative and Sigmund Freud the superego" (Niehans, 62).

[Geneva: Gabriel Cramer] 1759 - Duodecimo (159 × 96 mm), pp. 299. Contemporary French mottled calf, smooth spine gilt in compartments with centre flower tools, red morocco label, marbled endpapers and edges. Some very skilful, practically imperceptible repair at head of spine and to corners of front board, front joint just a little tender at foot, pale and intermittent water-staining to upper outer corner of first gathering, overall a fine copy. First edition, one of only a dozen or so recorded copies of the true first edition of this celebrated philosophical conte, one of the genuine rarities in major 18th-century literature. There were 18 editions of Candide in 1759 alone, all of them superficially alike, though only four of them, like this, have 299 pages. Recent research, following Ira Wade, Giles Barber, and Stephen Weissman, has identified this as the true first edition, with the following points: the title ornament of spray, fruit and flowers is repeated at pp. 193 and 266; p. 103, line 4, has the misprint "que ce ce fut" (corrected to "que ce fut" in later editions); p. 125, line 4, has "précisément" (corrected to "précipitamment" in later editions); with Voltaire's revisions on p. 31 eliminating an unnecessary paragraph break, and on p. 41, where several short sentences about the Lisbon earthquake were rewritten. This first edition does not preserve the cancelled paragraph on p. 242 critical of German poets (beginning "Candide était affligé") which survives unintentionally in the London edition. As in all but three known surviving copies of this edition, this copy is bound without the two terminal leaves, blank N7 and N8 containing instructions to the binder.       Cordier, Sinica, col. 2468; ESTC T55175; Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 1759-1767. First and only edition in English of a travel account by the ambassador of the Czar of Muscovy to the court of the Emperor of China. Ambassador Ides (1657-1708) was a native of Holstein-Glückstadt and set up as a merchant in Moscow in 1687. In 1692 Ides was selected to lead a Russian embassy and trade mission to China. His account of this journey, first published in Dutch in 1704, is one of the "most detailed and accurate descriptions of inner Asia up to that time" (Lach & Van Kley). He gives rich descriptions of the landscape and inhabitants of Siberia and especially important is his information on Manchuria and Inner Mongolia, where the expanding Russian and Chinese empires bordered. As one of the first Europeans, Ides described the Gobi Desert.Combined with Ides's account of his travels is a description of the topography of China and of its inhabitants, supposedly written by a Catholic Chinese named Dionysius Kao. Ides had received a manuscript with this text from Kao and had later sent it to his Dutch friend Nicolaes Witsen (1641-1717), possibly together with a manuscript of his own account. According to a note by the original Dutch translator, Kao's text was written in "barbarous and unintelligible Latin, and somewhat better German" (p. 209). Most plates with repaired tears and waterstains, pages browned with some darker stains. Original binding heavily damaged but professionally restored. A fair copy of an important travel account.

Compendio del arte de la lengua mexicana.

Mexico: Bibliotheca Mexicana 4to (21 cm, 8"). Frontis., [12] ff., 202 pp., plt.. 1759 This is the second edition of Carochi's grammar, and as such is the first edited and improved by Paredes; the first edition appeared in 1645 and is a very rare book. The work is widely held to be the best Nahuatl grammar in the classical tradition; Dra. H. de León-Portilla calls it a "Resumen conciso de lo más sobresaliente expuesto por Carochi." Carochi, an Italian Jesuit missionary, is considered to have been one of the three best scholars of the colonial era to turn his attention to the study of the native languages of Mexico. This edition of his work, "Dispuesto con brevedad, claridad, y propriedad por el P. Ignacio de Paredes," bears an elaborate emblematic frontispiece engraved by Zapata — also in a classical tradition — showing St. Ignatius teaching the peoples of the world. Provenance: 18th-century ownership inscription, "Del uso del B. Ygnacio Rendon"; note in French "Se vend en 1874, 300 francs"; 19th-century bookplates of "Museum Bollandianum," one marked in pen "double. Contemporary limp vellum, remnants of ties. Pages mostly clean and white, with a very few showing small spots of foxing. A very satisfactory copy.

[Madrid, 1759. Folio. Dbd. Maltese cross at head of title. Contemporary manuscript inscriptions in ink at top of first page. Accomplished in manuscript at Villaviciosa, Spain on February 18, 1759, signed by Juan Manuel Crespo, with additional inscription, on p.[3]. Light dampstaining in margins, occasional light soiling. A very good copy. A rare royal cedula issued by Ferdinand VI, King of Spain, confirming that the Secretaries of vice-royal chambers throughout the Americas do not have the rights, privileges, and emoluments held by governors, corregidores, and alcalde mayores. The decree refers to past abuses of power and finance by secretaries which were harmful to the realm, and directs Viceroys, Presidents, and Governors to ensure that secretaries, officials, and other dependents do not assume privileges which are not appropriate to their position. This copy, accomplished in manuscript at Villaviciosa, Spain on February 18, 1759, is signed by Juan Manuel Crespo, with the inscription "Yo el Rey. Por mandado del Rey Nuestro Señor." In addition, the inscription notes that this printed text is a copy of the royal cedula located in the books of the Secretary of Peru located in Madrid as of March 31, 1759. A rare proclamation regarding the limits of compensation for particular royal officials in Spanish dominions throughout the New World. Not in OCLC, Medina (BHA), or Palau.

The History of the Life of Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, sirnamed, The Great.

1-2. London, G. Hawkins, 1759. Stor 4:o. Grav. porträtt,+ xxvii,+ (blank),+ 40,+ (2),+ 452 s.+ 3 utvikbara grav. kartor,+ utvikbar grav. plansch,+ 32 tryckta tabeller; (4),+ 350,+ (32),+ 71,+ (30) s.+ 2 utvikbara grav. kartor,+ graverad plansch,+ 2 tabeller. Den opaginerad delen av andra delen innehåller "Scheme and diary of the war, &c from the king's entering Germany till the battle of Lützen, composed for the better understanding the three great campaings of 1630, 1631, 1632", vilket följs av ett appendix med tal och brev av Gustav II Adolf
