BROADSIDE, HEALTH - SPLIT, DALMATIA: TERMINAZIONE DEGL’ ILLUSTRISSIMI, ED ECCELLENTISSIMI SIGNORI SOPRA PROVEDITORI, E PROVEDITORI ALLA SANITÀ.

[Venice:] stampata per li Figliuoli del qu. Z. Antonio Pinelli stampatori ducali March 22, . 1758 - Broadside: Letterpress (Very Good, soft folds, tiny holes in the upper blank part, a narrow loss of text in a fold on the right-hand side, small loss of a white corner) 60 x 43 cm (23.6 x 17 inches). A rare Venetian broadside forbids uncontrolled Turkish trade in the Lazaret of Split in Dalmatia as a health precaution against spreading of the plague. A large broadside in Italian language was printed on March 22, 1758, in Venice. It points out the uncontrolled dealing with tobacco and salt by Turks the Lazaret in Split in Dalmatia, at the time a part of the Venetian Republic and today a part of Croatia, an a potential danger of plague. The Lazaret in Split, set on the south side of the Diocletian's Palace, was a quarantine for the goods, imported from the Ottoman Empire, mostly from nearby Bosnia. The building, based on plans by Giuseppe Santini was finished by 1666 and could receive up to 500 horses and donkeys. In the 17th and 18th centuries the quarantine times were extremely long and have lasted between 21 and 42 days, what encouraged black market inside the Lazaret. In 1754 the Venetian board for health pointed out, with this broadside, a risk of spreading the plague and other diseases in Split and consequentially on the Venetian territory, by uncontrolled dealing with Turkish goods. Split was severely hurt by an epidemics of plague in 1731-1732, and between 1763 and 1764, and later in 1784. Provveditori e Sopra Provveditori alla Sanità, who published this map, was a Venetian government organisation, with a role similar to today’s health ministry. Founded in 1485 it first consisted of three members, and from 1536 on from five members. The "ministry" was in charge of predicting epidemics and other health issues, informing people of the dangers and setting new rules and laws at the times of epidemics. Their decrees were issued n forms of broadsides and pamphlets. As many of the pamphlets survive in libraries, the broadsides have lower survival rate. We could not trace any examples of this broadside in institutions worldwide. References: Ivone Cacciavillani, La sanità pubblica nell’ordinamento Veneziano, 2010

A Voyage to South-America: Describing at Large the Spanish Cities, Towns, Provinces &cc;. on that extensive Continent. Interspersed throughout with Reflections on the Genius, Customs, Manners and Trade of the Inhabitants; together with the Natural History

London: Printed for L Davis and C Reyers, 1758 2 volumes. xxiv509+[iii ad] pages with five folding plates; iv+420+[xviii index] pages with two foldout plates. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4") bound in half leather with five raised bands with red labels in gilt lettering with marbled boards. First English edition.Jorge Juan y Santacilia was a Spanish mathematician, scientist, naval officer, and mariner. Antonio de Ulloa y de la Torre-Giral was a Spanish general of the navy, explorer, scientist, author, astronomer, colonial administrator and the first Spanish governor of Louisiana. He was appointed to that office after France ceded the territory to Spain in 1763, following its defeat by Great Britain in the Seven Years' War. Ulloa's rule was resisted by the French Creole colonists in New Orleans, who expelled him in 1768 from West Louisiana. In 1734, King Philip V of Spain asked Jorge Juan and fellow scientist Antonio de Ulloa to join the French Geodesic Mission organized by the French Academy of Sciences from Paris, under command of the astronomer Louis Godin. The mission was to measure the length of a degree of meridian arc at the Equator in South America and to determine the roundness of the Earth. On 26 May 1735, they left Cadiz in the company of the Marquess of Villagarcía, who had just been appointed Viceroy of Peru. Jorge Juan was on board the ship El Conquistador and Antonio de Ulloa on the frigate Incendio. The expedition traveled to Quito, in present-day Ecuador, and after nine years of careful study, determined that the Earth is not perfectly spherical but is oblate, i.e. flattened at the poles. Juan also successfully measured the heights of the mountains of the Andes using a barometer. Juan remained nine years in America, studying the political and social situation of the Spanish territories. Among other things, he observed a new metal the miners called Platina de Pinto (little silver of the Pinto river). On his return to Spain, King Ferdinand promoted him to captain. For their work and discoveries in Peru, both he and de Ulloa were elected Fellows of the Royal Society, Santacilia in 1749.Condition:Old number stamp to front end paper verso else a very good to fine set.

Con el Marques de Ariño.(Madrid, 24 May

1758 - Fine engraving (118 x 75mm) on title of Nuestra Señora del Pilar(Our Lady of the Pillar),Zaragoza, title within typographic border. Sm folio (288 x 205mm). [1], 18 ff. Fine contemporaryBrokatpapier by Johann Michael Munck of Augsburg, crimson paper richly decorated in gold, with a background of swirling acanthus leaves, a hunter on horseback, various hunters on foot with shotgun, spear and horn,a femalehunterwith gun and bird of prey, various hounds, a stag, boar, ox, birds, fox, goat and squirrel (a little rubbed at head of spine). An unusual combination of splendid brocade paper from Augsburg, with hunting scenes in gold embossed on crimson ground, found as a binding ona rare Madrid printing of regulations compiled for the rule of Salillas in the province of Huesca, Aragon. The regulations were compiled by José de Gálvez y Gallardo (1720-1787), alawyer in Madrid, who becameone of the Spanish political pioneers in New Spain. He was born in Malaga, Spain, in 1729, of impoverished but nobleparentage. They contrived, however, to him a good education, and he subsequently obtained a post as advocate at the French Embassy, where he came in contact with many influential friends. He was sent to Mexico in 1761, as Inspector General, and three years later was given supreme powers. He did much to help the Indians, and organised the expedition to Monterey, which the Spanish reached in 1770, thus bringing to a successful end the two hundred years' effort of Spain to secure herself in California. Only one other copy traced, at theBiblioteca Nacional de España, Madrid. Ref: Priestley, Herbert Ingram.José de Gálvez, Visitor-General of New Spain, 1765-1771.         1758 1st Church ed Edmund Spenser Faerie Queene Fairy Queen Tudor Elizabeth I

London : Printed by William Faden, 1758. First edition thus - 1758 1st Church ed Edmund Spenser Faerie Queene Fairy Queen Tudor Elizabeth I “For there is nothing lost, that may be found, if sought.” Edmund Spenser, The Faerie Queene Edmund Spenser is one of the most well-known 16th-century English poets. His most-famous poem, ‘The Faerie Queene’ is one of fantasy and allegory that celebrated the Tudors and Queen Elizabeth. Spenser explores human emotion, consciousness, and conflict and drew much of his influence from Italian greats Ariosto and Tasso. He embodied Elizabethan values and British history, but he also wanted to have literary freedom balancing history and myth. Samuel Johnson was well-versed with ‘The Faerie Queene’ as it was a ‘useful source for obsolete and archaic words’ as he was organizing his ‘Dictionary’. This 1758 edition was edited by Ralph Church who included new notes to this landmark work. This edition was the first with Church’s notes and comments. It was also the first 18th-century edition of ‘Faerie Queene’ that was printed by its publisher. (Wilkinson). Item number: #2395 Price: $750 SPENSER, Edmund The faerie queene : by Edmund Spenser.         The History and Practice of the High Court of Chancery

London: Printed by Henry Lintot for J. Worral and W. Owen, 1758 SIGNED BY CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN MARSHALL. FIRST EDITION of this law book from the library of John Marshall, signed twice (on the front free endpaper and on the front cover). The most important chief justice in the history of the United States Supreme Court, John Marshall was one of the great figures in the establishment of our judicial, legal, and political system. John Marshall rose quickly from frontier log cabin beginnings (albeit from one of Virginia's leading families) to become one of the most respected statesmen in America. After serving for a year as secretary of state under John Adams, Marshall became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a post he held from 1801 to 1835. Over those 35 years he transformed the Court, established the power of judicial review, and helped define the Constitution for future generations, making the third branch co-equal with the executive and legislative branches. As Story wrote, "Your expositions of constitutional law enjoy a rare and extraordinary authority. They constitute a monument of fame far beyond the ordinary memorials of political and military glory. They are destined to enlighten, instruct, and convince future generations; and can scarcely perish but with the memory of the constitution itself" (Story, Commentaries). As a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, Marshall chaired a committee in 1787 to amend the act establishing the High Court of Chancery in Virginia. It is likely that Marshall used this very book, Gilbert's Chancery, in preparing to reform the law, which had been written by Thomas Jefferson ten years before (see Beveridge, Life of John Marshall I: 224-25). Gilbert (1674-1726) was an important English jurist whose writings were widely read by the Founders. For example, Jefferson owned five of his books. Gilbert ultimately rose to the position of Chief Baron of the Exchequer of England in 1725. His Chancery was an enormously influential book: "all other works on equity, which have subsequently appeared may be, in some sense, considered as modifications of Lord Gilbert's treatise" (Isaac Grant). Contemporary tan calf, red morocco label. Light browning. Joints neatly reinforced. A handsome copy. Fine half morocco case. This rare book from John Marshall's library is an outstanding legal and constitutional history association copy.

He was a brother of D. João V, and uncle of D. José I. Born in Lisbon on March 15, 1695, he died unmarried and without issue in the same city on October 20, 1757 and is buried at the Royal Pantheon of the Bragança Dynasty, at the Mosteiro de São Vicente de Fora in Lisbon. Something of a rogue, he spent most of his life estranged from the royal court. D. António took great interest in music, playing the harpsichord and piano, and was a student of the Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti. The famous Franciscan Friar (1686-after 1759), a native of Bahia, who joined the Franciscan order at the convento de Sergipe do Conde, in 1702, merited inclusion (with numerous errors, including an erroneous early date of death), in Pereira da Silva's Varões ilustres do Brasil. He studied at the convento de Olinda prior to moving to the island of Madeira, then to Lisbon, where he took Holy Orders. Professor of theology, he was Penitenciário geral of his congregation. When D. João V sent a fleet at the request of Pope Clement XI in 1717 to expel the Turks from Corfu, he was present as chaplain, and was gravely wounded, causing the amputation of his left leg. Fray Francisco knew French, English, Italian and Latin; he made several trips within Europe, visiting England and the Low Countries; during a stay in Italy he was incorporated into the Arcádia Romana. He was a member of the Academia Real de História. A number of his sermons, elegies, orations, and poems were published during his lifetime; others remained in manuscript. *** Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 770; período colonial p. 334.
