HELVÉTIUS, Claude-Adrien.
Durand, Paris, 1758. 1 blank leaf + half-title + TP + i-xxii + [1]-643 + [644] = Approbation and Privilege du Roi + 1 blank leaf. Quarto. First Edition, Second Issue, The "B" Tirage of De l'esprit (see below). Smith E.1b. A Beautiful Copy of the "B Tirage" of Helvetius' De l'esprit. One of the Great Causes Célébres of the 18th Century. An Important Document for Understanding 18th Century French Censorship and Printing Practices and the Philosophical-Political Climate in 1758"The publication in 1758 of his principal work, De l'esprit was noisily condemned by the authorities, both ecclesiastical and ministerial, for its dangerously heretical and subversive opinions. Suppression of the book signaled a grave - but fortunately temporary - setback for the party of philosophes and Encyclopedists. Despite the recantations that Helvétius was forced to make regarding De l'esprit, he reaffirmed his ideas even more strongly in De L'Homme, de ses facultes intellectuelles, et se son education, published posthumously in 1772." (EP, Vol. 3, p. 472) Helvétius continued the work of Condillac by reducing all human understanding to sensation or sense-perception. He then took this reductionist psychology and erected a utilitarian theory of morality based upon it - making him "one of the chief pioneers and promoters of utilitarian moral theory" (Copelston, VI, 1, p. 51). Helvétius was a strong defender of the benefits of education and also extremely political - attacking all forms of despotism and, in particular, French despotism. This book comes with a tremendously complicated printing history - … [Click Below for Full Description]

Esteban de Terreros y Pando (1707-1782)
En la Oficina de Joachin Ibarra, Madrid, 1758. [ii]+160 pages with frontispiece and 17 copper engraved plates (1 folding) of handwriting samples from diplomas and bulls by Francisco Javier de Santiago y Palomares. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in original period vellum. (Palau 330662) First edition. Esteban de Terreros y Pando studied under the Jesuits and eventually was ordained in the order. He taught at the Imperial College in Madrid in Latin, Theology and Mathematics. He is best know for his multi-volume Spanish Dictionary. this little manual was a collaboration with Andrés Marcos Burriel (1719-1762) and his name does not appear. This Manual on the history of Spanish handwriting. chronologically is the second manual of Spanish paleography to have been published (the first appeared twenty years earlier). Prints of documents and antiquities were rare in Spain, and the quality of the reproductions in the Paleografía were unprecedented and unparalleled; and as Palomares later remarked of this work in his own treatise on paleography, "Even though they have some defects, they are the most accurate that have been engraved until now." For instance, no accurate reproductions of a text in Visigothic script had ever been printed before. On the first plate, a letter of Queen Isabel dated 19 January 1481 illustrates two of the scripts employed in Spain during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the cortesana or "courtesan script" and the procesada, a term for which there is no English equivalent, both of which demonstrate why a manual of paleography or guide to the decipherment of " … [Click Below for Full Description]

Large and important map of the Duchy of Ferrara, which also covers part of the Bologna and Modena' area, in the third and final edition, with the dedication to Francis II (1792-1806). Third state of the map, engraved by Andrea Bolzoni was published for the first time in 1758, then in 1782 and finally in 1800. Intersting from the hydrographic interest, the map is also interesting because for the first time the settlement and the road network of the Ferrara are highlighted. At the end of the description, in the cartouche with the title, the editor' signature is erased. Copper engraving, mounted on canvas, some dampstains, otherwise in good condition. Le Roy, Julien David:
Paris, Guerin & Delatour, Nyon et Amsterdam, Neaulme, 1758. Folio, circa 49,5 x 33 cm. XIV, 56 pp.; 1 f., VI, 28 pp., 27 (instead of 28) + 32 = 59 (often folding) plates Contemporary full calf with amply gilded spine and marbled endpapers "Cicognara 2705; Brunet III, 1003; Cohen-Ricci 627. - First edition of this large and beautifully illustrated work about ancient monuments in Athens and other parts of Greece as well as Pula in Istria. Le Roy (1724-1806) visited Greece in person and his plates are based on actual measurements taken on site. They show elegantly set views reminding of Piranesi, architectural details, reconstructions and groundplans. With this work Le Roy laid the foundation for the new fashion of the neoclassic style and his treatise ?provides the theoretical framework and many of the actual models for French neo-classical architecture? (Millard). - "Les grandes estampes sont fort belles" (Cohen-Ricci). - Here unfortunately plate 18 (port Piraeus) in part one is missing - altogether just 59 instead of 60 plates - price accordingly reduced! - First blank leaf with small private inscription, plates with added marginal paper to match the size of the pages (this added paper is a little more browned). Else inside fine and clean. Binding rubbed, almost complete front cover renewed in matching brown paper (leather gone, restored), spine nice. Plates very nice. GLASS
London: Printed for the Author, 1758. Second edition, long tall 8vo (200 x 75 mm), xxv, [1], 170, [2], iv, 46, 46a-h, 47-74pp., 3 engravings including 2 illustrs of complete and broken glass, lightly washed in pale green, cont. sheep, neatly rebacked, plain spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt. First published in 1758, this rare work consists of numerous tables providing pricing and manufacturing techniques on a wide range of goods. In the first part, there is extensive information on the production of plate glass and mirrors, including instructions on grinding and polishing glass, repurposing mirrors, convex and concave mirrors, coloured glass, and other similar pursuits. Following these instructions are tables of prices and various measurements. The second part contains explanations of measurement calculations on a variety of goods and hardware. These explanations are accompanied by tables of prices and measurements. This book provides deep insight into the economic and manufacturing concerns of numerous trades during the mid-18th century, and the heavy taxes and excise duties on plate glass reflect how the price limited the use of plate glass. Provenance: James Hunter, 1770, ownership signatures on front free endpaper and on title-page; Jon Webster, old signature at foot of page with coloured woodcut. Duncan, Bibliography of Glass, 1024.

Giuseppe POZZI
Acquaforte e bulino, 1758. [Click Below for Full Description]

*** [English translation available upon request.
