Michael Combrune
London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1758. An Essay on Brewing, with a View of Establishing the Principles of the Art Michael Combrune. First Edition xvi, 216 pages. Small octavo. An important work helping to establish the science of brewing, particularly through the use of the thermometer. Combrune was a professional brewer and a proponent of consistency in production. The vignette on the title page depicts an eagle carrying a thermometer over a barley field. "I know very well, that good beer was made before the Thermometer was known, and still is, by many, who are entirely ignorant of it, as if it had never been invented: but this is always by chance; and they cannot but confess they frequently fail; whereas, did they but properly apply this instrument, they certainly never would (p. 71)." Russian Orthodox Church
Moscow or the Kyiv- Pechorska Lavra: Emperor Elisaveta Petrovna (1741-1762 year), 1758. Was in use. Russian Orthodox Church book Anfologon or Festal Menaion /Анфологион или Трифологион - Сиречь Минея праздничная/ from about 1758 Offers a good preserved Russian religious book of the reign of Emperor Elisaveta Petrovna (1741-1762 year). The proposed book is in good condition but missing the Title Page, the first 2 pages with the Table of Contents and probably 1 sheet at the end. Book with hard leather covers and is well preserved for his years - there are old restorations on some of the pages. There is no page in this book with information where and when it was printed. There is a sheet on which the name of Empress Elisaveta Petrovna is written, and the names of Petar Fyodorovich, Ekaterina Alekseevna and Prince Pavel Petrovich are mentioned. The latter was born in 1754, so this book was printed in the period 1755-1761. I think that this book is printed in Moscow or the Kyiv- Pechorska Lavra somewhere around 1758 year. The text of the book is printed with a beautiful print in black and red and there are many small thumbnails. It has a format 190x115x65mm/ 7.5x4.5x2.5 inches and contains about 746 pages and weighs 683 grams. The book bears the marks of age, as places are old restorations, drops of wax and frayed letters. Book no missing pages and is firmly stuck to the covers - you get what you see in the photos. Пра́здничная мине́я, Цветосло́в, Цветная мине́я, или Анфоло́гий, Анфоло́гион (греч. HELVETIUS, Claude Adrien.
XXXII, 326, [2 blank]; [2 blank], 412 pp.Third (or second?) edition of one of the key works of the Radical Enlightenment, published in the same year as the first edition. The author had evoked huge outcry with the publication of De L'esprit (1758), a carefully argued essay on the mind, in which he roundly rejected metaphysics and the idea of Truth, replacing Christian morals by purely utilitarian ethics and stressing the importance of education as the key to moral behaviour. In De l'homme, Helvétius expanded and clarified his views, provoking even Diderot to write a Réfutation. The present edition was most likely printed in France, and, as Smith argues, it was probably this edition that the Paris Parliament condemned on 10 January 1774.Binding slightly rubbed; top of spine slightly worn. Fine copy.l Smith, Bibliography H.3; cf. Cioranescu 33651 (other edition); for Helvétius's philosophy: Blom, A Wicked Company, pp. 126-129.

1758. This work is an interesting look at the life of Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus. Erasmus was a Christian humanist, known as the greatest scholar of the Northern Renaissance. He wrote in a pure Latin style, and prepared new and important Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament. These editions raised influential questions that were dominant in the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Written by John Jortin. Jortin was a church historian, who published 'Remarks on Ecclesiastical History', known to be the most significant ecclesiastical history of that time.

VERNET, Antoine-Charles-Horace (Carle).
Striking aquatint of a Mamluk warrior in combat by the acclaimed French artist Carle Vernet (1758-1836), best known for his depiction of horses and war scenes. The warrior is depicted on a horse in traditional garb, firing a pistol and with some type of javelin(?) in the other hand. The scenery consists of ruins with a tower in the background. The engraver, Jean Pierre Jazet ( 1788-1871), must have been a skilled artist himself. A fine copy in a crisp impression.l Dayot, Carle Vernet (1925), no. 103; cf. SWAMMERDAM, Jan.
[62], 910 [=912]; 124, [36] pp.First edition of Swammerdam's remarkably detailed and accurate description of insect anatomy, with 53 extraordinary plates showing mostly insects (but also molluscs, crustaceans, frogs, an octopus, a squid and a fern), with greatly enlarged anatomical drawings, the whole edited after the author's death by the great scientist Herman Boerhaave, and with a biographical note on the author. "The foundation of our modern knowledge of the structure, metamorphosis and classification of insects" (Cole). Swammerdam's skill in dissecting these minute and fragile creatures and drawing their anatomy in great detail is astonishing, and "formed a good portion of the study of all invertebrate anatomy before Cuvier." (DSB). He avidly devoted much of his life to the study of insects, greatly admired them, and insisted against the fashion of his day that they were just as highly developed as other animals. By demonstrating the gradual nature of insect metamorphosis, showing the complexity of their inner anatomy, and debunking spontaneous generation he revolutionized the understanding of insects.Only slightly browned around the margins, with some occasional small spots, overall in very good condition. Bindings slightly stained, corners bumped, but otherwise in good condition.l Brunet V, 599; Dibner 191; Graesse VI, 532; Hagen, p. 209; Nissen, ZBI 4055; Wheeler Gift 291; cf. SILVESTRE DE SACY, Antoine-Isaac, and others.
[1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], IV, 775 784 pp.Early work of the famous French orientalist Silvestre de Sacy (1758-1838), printed in a collection of articles by members of the French Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles-lettres. In his article, read before an audience in 1785, Sacy describes the early history of the Arab people and the birth of Islam, based on ancient Arabic sources which are added to his text both in French translation and in the original Arabic. Also added are a genealogical table of the ancestors of the Prophet Muhammad and chronological tables of the kings of Yemen, the rulers of the Banu Khuza'ah over Mecca, the kings of al-Hirah and the kings of the Ghassanids. The articles in this collection were printed by the Imprimerie Impériale, which owned one of the world's best collections of Arabic types, including several that Napoleon had confiscated from the Propaganda Fide in Rome. The printing process was overseen by Jean-Joseph Marcel (1776-1854), who in 1798 had overseen the printing of the first books ever printed in Egypt (Hebrew presses excepted).Silvestre De Sacy was the first professor of Arabic at the École Spéciale des Langues Orientales Vivantes in Paris on its establishment in 1795. He produced an 1810 Arabic grammar that finally replaced Erpenius's as the scholarly standard and several carefully edited editions of Arabic and other oriental manuscripts from the collections of the Bibliothèque Royale/Impériale.Binding somewhat worn at the hinges; a very good copy.l Daunou, "Notice historique sur la vie et les ouvrages de M. le baron Silves … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEVEN YEARS WAR. France. King Louis XV.
A Grenoble: de Imprimerie de la Veuve Andre Faure, Imprimeur ordinaire du Roi, rue de Palais, 1758. Broadside (20.5 inches x 16.5 inches). In French. Text printed in two columns, separated by a line. Woodcut Royal Emblem at head of sheet, and woodcut initial. Contemporary manuscript number at top corner of recto and contemporary manuscript notations and signatures on verso. Folded to 10.5 inches x 5 inches with contemporary docket inscription (dated 1758). Untrimmed, retaining the original deckled edges. A few tiny wormholes affecting blank areas. By this Royal Ordonnance of 10 July 1758, King Louis XV boldly forgave mutineers and invited them back into the French armed forces by granting unconditional amnesty to anyone who had deserted prior to February 1757. The penalty for desertion was death; it seems there must have been a desperate need for troops (especially so for the planned campaign on Germany) in order to waive this most ancient of fundamental and strict military rules. Combrune, Michael]
R. and J. Dodsley, London, 1758. xvi, 216 pages. 71)." For brewers without access to a thermometer, Combrune provides formulas for combining boiling water with cold water in proportion to achieve an estimated temperature (p. 64). He also makes a case for beer over wine, "Physicians have given it as their opinion, that strong drinks from Malt are less pernicious than those produced from grapes (p. 134)." Combrune's book begins with a dictionary of brewing terms, followed by chapters on the classical elements, a section on the thermometer, another on barley, and several on malt. The contents leaf is bound in at the rear, as is often seen (the correct position cannot be determined from the catchwords). One corner missing from the first leaf of section one (not affecting text); various old ownership signatures, one dated 1801, and a private library bookplate on the pastedowns and endpapers. The binding is calf, rebacked at an early date but with modern gilt s … [Click Below for Full Description]

BELLIN (Jacques-Nicolas).
1758. 890 x 565 mm.

NEW JERSEY. LAWS
1758. NEW JERSEY. LAWS. The Grants, Concessions, and Original Constitutions of the Province of New-Jersey. The Acts Passed During the Proprietary Governments, and other Material Transactions .... By Aaron Leaming and Jacob Spicer. Philadelphia: W. Bradford, Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty for the Province of New-Jersey, [1758]. Sm. fol. [4], 763 p. Contemporary reversed sheep, blind two-line fillet and spine roll, by William Muir of Philadelphia. An unusually fine, fresh copy, with only minor wear at the extremities. With the early ownership stamp of Joseph Smith and a later bookplate. The classic compilation of the foundation documents of New Jersey from 1664 to 1702, accompanied by the session laws from 1668 to 1701. Authorized by the legislature in 1752, the work was assembled over the next six years chiefly by Samuel Nevill and Samuel Smith, and was seen through the press by Aaron Leaming and Jacob Spicer. Of all the compilations of New Jersey laws from the 1752 Nevill volume onward, the "Grants and Concessions" is the most difficult to find, and a clean, tight copy in the original William Muir binding is seldom seen. We sold this copy to Hammond twenty-five years ago, and have not seen its equal since then. See Felcone, New Jersey Books, 156, for a detailed ten-page study of this highly important colonial New Jersey book. Evans 8205; ESTC W6329.

FIELDING, Sir John. (Henry Fielding).
London A. Millar in the Strand, 1758. To which is added A PLAN for preserving those deserted Girls in this Town, who become Prostitutes from Necessity. FIRST EDITION 1758, Pamphlet, 8vo, 220 x 125 mm, 8¾ x 5¼ inches, pages: xiii, [1], 15-64, pages 61-64 contain the List of Subscribers "Towards cloathing friendless and deserted Boys to go on Board His Majesty's Ships", bound in modern quarter calf over new marbled sides, vellum corner tips, gilt lettered red morocco label to upper cover, new endpapers, fore-edges not trimmed. Title page lightly browned, final page slightly dusty, otherwise contents clean and bright. A very good copy. Henry Fielding (1707 – 1754) the author of the famous novel Tom Jones was a magistrate and aside from his literary achievements, he has a significant place in the history of law-enforcement, having founded (with his half-brother John) what some have called London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners, using his authority as a magistrate. The pamphlet describes their plans for ridding London of violent gangs, for dealing with the problems of beggars and homeless boys and girls, and gaming in public houses. sir John Fielding was a notable English magistrate and social reformer of the 18th century. He was also the younger half-brother of novelist, playwright and chief magistrate Henry Fielding. Despite being blinded in a navy accident at the age of 19, John set up his own business and, in his spare time, studied law with Henry. Appointed Henry's personal assistant in 1750, John helped him to root out corruption and improve the competence of … [Click Below for Full Description]

St. Petersburg: Typis Academiae, 1758. First edition. FIRST EDITIONS OF TWO LANDMARK PAPERS IN WHICH EULER PROPOSED HIS FAMOUS "POLYHEDRON FORMULA," ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND CONSEQUENTIAL OF MATHEMATICAL THEOREMS, AND ONE WITH IMPORTANT APPLICATIONS TO TOPOLOGY AND GRAPH THEORY. Leonhard Euler "not only made decisive and formative contributions to the subjects of geometry, calculus, mechanics, and number theory but also developed methods for solving problems in observational astronomy and demonstrated useful applications of mathematics in technology and public affairs." (Brittanica). One of those contributions, set forth in the two papers offered here, relates to the theory of polyhedra -- in essence, solid bodies with planar surfaces, such as a cube or dodecahedron. Indeed, Euler's result was "the most significant contribution to the theory [of polyhedra] since the foundational work of the ancient Greeks, perhaps the most important contribution ever." (Christopher Francese and David Richeson, "The Flaw in Euler's Proof of his Polyhedral Formula", American Mathematical Monthly 114(4)286-296 (2007)). It asserts that the number of vertices, edges, and faces of a polyhedron are related by the formula V - E + F = 2. For example, a cube has eight vertices, twelve edges, and six faces; and 8 - 12 + 6 = 2. In a survey conducted in the fall of 1988 by a mathematical journal, in which readers were asked to rate 24 mathematical theorems on the criterion of "beauty," Euler's polyhedron formula rated second, bested only by another Euler discovery, eiπ = - 1.
