BUNYAN, John
London: A.W. for W. Johnston, 1760. 1760 Pilgrim's Progress John Bunyan ART Illustrated Holy War PURITAN Allegory"What God says is best, is best, though all the men in the world are against it." ― John Bunyan, The Pilgrims Progress John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress" is one of the most important theological works ever written. Thought to be first printed in 1678, Bunyan began writing this story while in prison for his violations of the Conventicle Act, which prevent holding religious services outside the establishment of the Church of England. It is known that while Bunyan was in prison, his only companions were the Bible and Foxe's "Book of Martyrs" - thus, the two literary giants in his jail cell certainly influenced the writing of "Pilgrim's Progress." A Quaker by the name of Granger visited Bunyan in prison and says of him:"Bunyan, who had been mentioned among the least and lowest of our writers, and even ridiculed as a driveller by those who had never read him, deserves a much higher rank than is commonly imagined. His 'Pilgrim's Progress' gives us a clear and distinct idea of Calvinistic divinity."Allibone calls this book,"the best-known uninspired allegory which has been composed by the wit of man."This 18th-century edition includes impressive, full-page engravings from Sturt.Item number: #11183Price: $795BUNYAN, JohnThe Pilgrim's Progress from this world to that which is to come delivered under the similitude of a dream : wherein is discovered I. 1760. A very early print date for Wesley's Notes Upon The New Testament - Pre-1770 copies are quite scarce. 1760 John Wesley's New Testament Notes BRISTOL: Printed by GRABHAM and WILLIAM PINE, in Wine-Street, 1760. _____________________________________________________________________ John Wesley (1703 - 1791) was an Anglican cleric and Christian theologian. Wesley is largely credited, along with his brother Charles Wesley, as founding the Methodist movement which began when he took to open-air preaching in a similar manner to George Whitefield. In contrast to Whitefield's Calvinism, Wesley embraced the Arminian doctrines that were dominant in the 18th-century Church of England. Methodism in both forms became a highly successful evangelical movement in Britain and later in the United States. His work also helped lead to the development of the Holiness movement and Pentecostalism. You are bidding on Explanatory Notes Upon The New Testament ~ by John Wesley [Bristol - 1760 ] I offer this rare early printing of Wesley's famous commentary on the Gospels to the serious collector of Early Methodist works. GALIANO, Dionisio Alcalá.
[2], 87, [1] pp.Greatly expanded second edition of a treatise on the determination of latitude and longitude at sea, by Dionisio Alcalá Galiano (1760-1805), Spanish explorer, cartographer and captain in the Royal Spanish armada. His much shorter account (26 leaves instead of 45 and without the folding tables) was also printed by the widow Ibarra, in 1795. Galiano was a pioneer of the use of the chronometer in Spain, allowing him to produce far more accurate maps of the Spanish colonies in the Americas. Galiano enrolled in the Spanish naval school in 1775. After graduating in 1779 he participated in hydrographic surveys of the Spanish and South American coasts and other Spanish naval scientific explorations.Joaquin Ibarra (1725-1785) had been printer to the court of King Carlos III and Spain's greatest printer, vying with Bodoni and the Didots as a fine printer. His widow continued the tradition and upheld the quality of presswork and materials. The present book is well printed on fine Catalan laid paper by Joseph Llorens, who had supplied paper for Ibarra's famous 1780 Cervantes.A library stamp has been cut out of the title-page and the hole expertly restored, not affecting text or monogram. Otherwise in fine condition, with the paper still crisp. The binding is worn at the hinges but still good.l Bibl. Mar. Española 265; Palau 5752 (noting only 6 folding leaves); Houzeau & Lancaster 10540 (1795 ed.); for Galiano: Howgego, to 1800, G6.

[French & Indian War Map.] [Southeastern U.S.]
London: From The British Magazine, February, 1760 issue. A great small map of a good portion of the now southeastern United States, reaching to the Gulf coast at the south and Texas to the west. The area to the east of the Mississippi is marked "Territory in Dispute." The colonies of Virginia, North and South Carolina and Georgia all extend to the Mississippi. English claims to the disputed area are bolstered by a notation along the border between the Carolinas noting: "A large country subject to the English since 1729." Numerous Indian tribes are noted, as well as "Wandering Indians" at the western portion of the Gulf coast. Maps from The British Magazine are cited by Jolly as "practically unobtainable." A fascinating portrayal of the area that was the subject of the French and Indian War in a very uncommon source. Reference: Jolly, Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 157. Not in Cumming; The Southeast in Early Maps. [ICN 7568.]

Aan het einde van de zeventiende eeuw verloor de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden langzamerhand haar rol als economische supermogendheid aan Engeland. [HANDEL, George Frederic (1685-1759)]; [MAINWARING, John (d. 1807) and other authors]
London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1760. 8vo (8 x 5 inches). [iv], 208pp. Half-title. Contemporary English speckled calf. Rebacked, some offsetting from binding at edges of preliminaries and terminal leaves, free endpaper slightly chipped at edges, L1-2 with offset stain. Provenance: armorial bookplate from a member of the Clayton family with motto "quod sors ferit fermus." FIRST EDITION of the first full biography of Handel in any language, with a catalogue of his works. It also provides a summary of music at the end of the Baroque era. The English theologian Mainwaring collaborated with John Christopher Smith, Jr. and Robert Price on the text, and the catalogue was prepared by James Harris. The biography occupies the first 143 pages and is followed by the catalogue of his works, divided into Church Music, Theatrical Music, and Chamber Music. This is followed, on pages 159 to the end, by observations on Handel's works (by Price)."Though he was evidently conversant with music, he devoted most of his attention to the broad outlines of Handel's life and to a multitude of charming anecdotes about the great man, reserving the detailed discussion of the music for Price's portion of the book. Mainwaring probably obtained most of his information from John Christopher Smith, Jr. (1712-1795), a composer who-like his father-worked for Handel for many years in a variety of capacities and consequently knew him well. It is not clear if Mainwaring ever had the opportunity to interview Handel directly" ("Histories of Music," exhibit at Yale University Libraries, Winter-Spring 2011). [BENNETT, Richard]
[London,, 1760. including all ye New Buildings 1760]. Engraved map, fine original hand-colour, blank on verso, mounted as a fan on wooden and bone sticks. A very rare fan map. "Few art forms combine functional, ceremonial and decorative uses as elegantly as the fan. Fewer still can match such diversity with a history stretching back 3000 years. Pictorial records show some of the earliest fans date back to around 3000 BC, and there is evidence that the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans all used fans as cooling and ceremonial devices, while Chinese literary sources associate the fan with ancient mythical and historical characters. The first folding fans were inspired by and copied from prototypes brought into Europe by merchant traders and the religious orders that had set up colonies along the coasts of China and Japan. These early fans were regarded as a status symbol. While their 'montures' (i.e. sticks and guards) were made from materials such as ivory, mother-of-pearl, and tortoiseshell, often carved and pierced and ornamented with silver, gold and precious stones, the leaves were painted by craftsmen who gradually amalgamated into guilds such as The Worshipful Company of Fan Makers... The eighteenth century also saw the development of the printed fan: cheaper to manufacture and therefore cheaper to purchase, fans were suddenly available to a much wider audience than had previously been the case" (The Fan Museum). Not in the Schreiber Collection; BL, Maps 188.v.35.

RAMEAU (Jean-Philippe)
A Paris, 1760. (SCIENCE AND RELIGION). CARACCIOLI, LOUIS ANTOINE, MARQUIS
Frankfurt, Liége, and Paris: Bassompierre, 1760, 1761, 1766. 185 x 98 mm. (6 1/2 x 3 3/4"). xviii, [2], 211 pp.; lvi, 401, [3] pp.; vii, [5], 201 pp. Three separately published works. First two works in contemporary marbled sheep, spines gilt in compartments (first work with inelegant repair to spine); the third work in half sheep over marbled boards. Front pastedowns with ex-libris of Daniel Berditchevsky. Short crack to tail of a couple of joints, boards with insignificant worming, extremities a little rubbed, but the bindings sound and not displeasing; excellent copies internally, clean and fresh with only minor imperfections. Intended to promote piety in an increasingly secular world, these works were written by a man deemed the "Enemy of the Philosophers" for his defense of traditional Christian spirituality against Enlightenment rationalism. Marquis Louis-Antoine Caraccioli (1719-1803) was born in Paris to a noble Neapolitan family and travelled the Continent trying a variety of careers, from the church to the military, before returning to the city of his birth to pursue a literary life. He wrote biographical and historical works as well as defenses of the pope, but is best known for his excursions into conduct literature, his experiments with printing text in color, and his Christian apologia. Here, he seeks to refute the deism of the great "philosophes" of the Enlightenment in "The Enigmatic Universe" and to reconcile science with Christianity; offers Christianity as the best path to a happy life in "The Religion of the Honest Man"; and counsels self-reflection … [Click Below for Full Description]
