Artist: Seutter Albrecht Karl d ; issued in: Augsburg; date: d1760 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Printed on 2 sheets joined together; - size (in cm): 56 x 98; - description: Map shows the area of Meissen in Saxonia with a decorative title cartouche and index.; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

He produced architectural views of places around the world intended as vues d?optiques, which were published in various places during the last half of the 18th century, including Paris, Augsburg and London. He was also known for his portraits.Probst came from an extended family of printers, whose businesses can all be traced back to the publishing firm of Jeremias Wolff (1663-1724). After Wolff's death his firm was continued as ?Wolff?s Heirs? by his son-in-law Johann Balthasar Probst (1689-1750). After Probst?s death in 1750, his descendants divided the business and published under their own imprints: Johann Friedrich Probst (1721-1781), Georg Balthasar Probst (1732-1801) and Johann Michael Probst. Another part of the Wolff-Probst firm was acquired by the Augsburg publisher Johann Georg Hertel (1700-1775), whose son Georg Leopold Hertel had married a sister of the Probsts. In the next generation, Georg Mathäus Probst (d. 1788), son of Georg Balthasar Probst, also became an engraver of portraits and views.

Fünfte Folge von Unterschiedlichen Gegenden ALTER GEBAEUDE bestehend in 24 Blatt.

Wien. Kupferstecherakademie.(um 1760). Moderne Mappe. Franz Edmund Weirotter (* 29. Mai 1733 in Innsbruck; † 11. Versand D: 6,00 EUR 18.          Histoire de Madame de Pompadour.

[France, c. 1760s]. - An early manuscript version of a notorious libelle against the French royal mistress, which had been composed and published in London (1758-9) and suppressed on the instructions of the French government. A vicious satire, highlighting Madame de Pompadour's humble origins, the Histoire articulates the familiar anxiety over the power and influence of a woman at court. While not overtly pornographic, its theme is the profound immorality surrounding the court of Louis XV.The author, Marianne-Agnès Pillement, a defrocked nun, is a most interesting figure, publishing several novels in Paris before being forced to flee to London where she made a living as a tutor to the children of the wealthy. The purpose of Histoire de Madame de Pompadour seems to have been blackmail. English, French and German editions appeared in 1758 and 1759 (it is not clear which came first) with London imprints though they may well have been printed abroad (ESTC hazards Leipzig, Holland and the Low Countries as possibilities for the several early editions). French agents in London were charged with the purchase and destruction of copies, though the number of distinct issues and editions suggests the publishers outwitted them. As always with such clandestine works, manuscripts were also a tempting option. Our example contains the full text (with numerous minor variations) together with some additional materials, including a version of Madame Pompadour's will.Loosely inserted is a mildly-plausible forgery of a Pompadour autograph letter dated 1749, accompanied by a much later expertise by the Paris autograph dealer Charavay declaring it "fausse". Manuscript on paper, 4to (225 × 170 mm), 2 parts in one, continuously paginated, pp. [2], 336 (the last 8 pages blank), emblematic general title in pen and wash, second part title (dated 1764) in ruled and wash border. Paper with 'J Honig & Zo[nen]' watermark (undated). Legible text in French throughout. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt panelled spine with red morocco label, red edges. Slightly rubbed. Early armorial bookplate to front pastdown (name effaced0. [The work and its reception is discussed at length by Simon Burrows in Blackmail, Scandal and Revolution: London's French Libellistes, 1758-1792.] [Attributes: Hard Cover]

He appears as a poet here, with thirteen stanzas on the French and Indian War, the first on the title-page and the others at the heads of each month's table. This rare almanac deserves restoration. The only copy to come up for auction in recent decades went for $1700. Size: 12mo [Attributes: First Edition]

Italy 1760 - Etching with engraving for the "Veduta di Roma", 405 x 615 mm., Rome edition, third state with artist's address and price. Occasional slight browning. The Palazzo della Consulta was only a recent addition to baroque Rome when depicted by Piranesi, having been erected in the 1730s. It was designed by Ferdinando Fuga for Pope Clement XII to house the Papal secretariat of the main council of state, the Sacra Congregazione della Consulta. However, it subsequently passed through many manifestations, at the turn of the century housing the Prefecture of Rome, after Italian unification becoming the residence of Prince Umberto I, and by the turn of the next century it was home to the Foreign Ministry. In the 1950s, it took on its current role as the Constitutional Court of Italy. The top of the facade is dominated by the large sculptural coat of arms of the Corsini family of Clement XII, as also seen at the Trevi Fountain. F.737; H.22; W-E.175

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

A new map of Great Britain corrected from the observations communicated to the Royal Society at London. By John Sexex F.R.S. 1714.

1760 - London: Thomas Bowles, John Bowles & Son, and Robert Sayer, c.1760. Coloured. Two sheets conjoined, total 960 x 660mm. Repairs to folds. A large map of England, Wales and Scotland, with an ornate title cartouche featuring a portrait of Queen Anne, the Royal Arms and a scene of Hercules fighting the Hydra. Originally issued in 1708, it is one of the first maps to use the name 'Great Britain' after the Act of Union of 1707. It was first published by the partnership of Parker and Senex, then also with John Mexwell by 1711. By 1714 Parker had dropped out, so his name was removed from the imprint (when the map appeared in Senex's 'English Atlas'0, as did Maxwell's by 1720. In 1728 Senex became a Fellow of the Royal Society (F.R.S). This last state was published about twenty years after Senex died, still with the 1714 date and portrait of Queen Anne. Despite the long printing history this map is quite uncommon: such large-format maps are notoriously hard to store and handle, so are usually damaged. SHIRLEY: Price 2, state 6 of 6.

Franz Edmund Weirotter (* 29. Mai 1733 in Innsbruck; † 11.

And so God send the good Ship to her desired Port in safety…”

IgnatiusWebber (1733-1783) appears as master on a list of prisoners sent to Boston in the cartel “Snow Drift” from Halifax, September 30, 1778. A cartel was a ship employed in the exchange of prisoners. From 1780, Webber was captain of the privateer “Commerce” in the Revolutionary War. The ship is recorded as having 12 guns and 40 men.

The article “Early Jewish Residents in Massachusetts” by Lee M. Friedman, (Baltimore: American Jewish Historical Society, 1915) mentions Lloyd: “Aaron Lopez, the great Newport merchant, carried on a considerable trade with Boston. He had a resident agent there for many years in the person of Henry Lloyd. There was almost a daily exchange of letters between them, and many of his young Jewish clerks were sent from Newport to Mr. Lloyd in Boston … It was no uncommon thing to find young Jews temporarily in Boston attending to business for their employers.” In 1774, Henry Lloyd (c. 1710-1796) was one of the addressers of Governor Thomas Hutchinson and was then described as “merchant and contractor for the troops.” He went to Halifax in 1776, and was proscribed and banished in 1778. For his remaining years, Lloyd lived in London.
