1760. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr Alexandre-Jean-Joseph Le Riche de La Popelinière, Daïra. Histoire orientale. Paris, Imprimerie de Claude-François Simon, 1760. In-8, 320p.

Second Jesuit edition (emended and corrected), based on the text of the third London edition of the Principia. This version is valued for its excellent annotations and copious commentary, which is nearly the same length as the Principia itself. It contains Newton's Dedication to the Royal Society; Prefaces to the first, second and third editions and Roger Cotes's Preface. In addition, the Jesuits' edition of the Principia is prized for the inclusion of the important treatises on the theory of the tides: Daniel Bernoulli's Traite sur le Flux et Reflux de la Mer, Colin MacLaurin's De Causa Physica Fluxus et Refluxus Maris, and Leonardo Euler's Inquisitio Physica in causam Fluxus ac Refluxus Maris. These three works gained the prize given by the Royal Academy of Sciences in 1724 for resolving tidal problems relating to the theory of gravity. They represent the most significant discovery concerning tidal mechanics between the publication of the Principia and the discoveries of Laplace. REFERENCES: Babson, 31; Gray, 14; Wallis, 14.

Charles Nicolas COCHIN (Paris, 29 Aprile 1688; Parigi, 16 Giugno 1754).
"Etching with engravings, signed and dated at lower center.
Acquaforte, firmata in lastra in basso. Four of the important buildings of Pisa, including the famous 'Leaning Tower'. Etching, signed at the lower right. A very good impression, on contemporary laid paper, with margins, perfect condition. Rare. LANGHORNE, John.
London: Printed for R. Griffiths, 1760. 4to (238 × 195 mm) in half-sheets, pp. 23, [1]; complete with half-title; title and final blank page rather dust-soiled; recent wrappers. First edition: a scarce, early work by Langhorne (1735-1779), written from Hackthorn, Lincolnshire (where he served as a tutor) and dedicated to the Honourable Mrs Lane, 'a great Lover and Patroness of Music'. 'The Tears of Music may be considered as the genuine and animated wailings of Poetry, who deplores her Sister's loss, in Handel, very melodiously through the quill of a favourite Devoté to these tuneful Powers. Indeed, Mr. Langhorne appears, from these small specimens, to possess an exact ear, and a delicate taste for these fine arts... We are regaled with as delightful a concert as can be without actual instruments and voices. The pauses and cadences' (Monthly Review). The 'Ode to the River Eden' which accompanies the main poem Langhorne describes as on a subject 'merely personal'. Aubin quotes from it and describes it as 'an early example of a "youthful recollections" poem' (Topographical Poetry, p. 231). . Order directly from our website for free shipping worldwide.

Londres [i.e. Genève, Cramer], 1760. (Bengesco, I, n°222. Spectacular view of the Vesuve during the eruption of 1575, engraved by J. F. Bernard on a drawing by de la Rue. The view was published into famous Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers. The Encyclopédie was published under the direction of Diderot and d'Alembert, with 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates between 1751 and 1772. Containing 74,000 articles written by more than 130 contributors, the Encyclopédie was a massive reference work for the arts and sciences, as well as a machine de guerre which served to propagate the ideas of … [Click Below for Full Description]

He was known for writing under several pseudonyms, but by far his most recognisable pen-name would be Lemuel Gulliver. 'Gulliver's Travels' as they would come to be known, saw Swift's fictional explorer some across unusual countries and people. Swift was also noted as having a fractious relationship with Queen Anne. Having taken dislike his work 'A Tale of a Tub', the monarch actively prevented Swift from gaining his desired position within the clergy. Instead he secured a smaller appointment at the Deanery of St Patrick's much to the Queens dismay. Once the Tory lost power, Swift … [Click Below for Full Description]

Octavo, 8 volumes (of 9, lacking Volume 1); Volume 3 contains the engraved plate by Ravanet after Hogarth as the frontispiece, and the marbled leaf between L4 and L5 (the pagination is continuous - pages 169-170). Contemporary full vellum; spines gilt in compartments, with later (19th century) red and olive-green labels (one chipped, revealing an earlier label beneath, and indicating that all but one is an early replacement); edges sprinkled red; covers soiled, rubbed and bowed, with some worming to the spines; occasional moderate worming to the text; plate shaved at the leading edge; bound without half titles (although they are not called for in every volume); a good set. Volumes 5, 7 and 9 are signed in ink on B1 in each instance by the author ('L. Sterne'), as usual, reportedly in an effort to suppress pirated editions. On the opposite page he addresses his 'unlearned reader', saying 'I tell you before-hand, you had better throw down the book at once; for without much reading, by w … [Click Below for Full Description]

HANDEL, George Frederic (1685-1759)]; [MAINWARING, John (d.
London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1760. 8vo (8 x 5 inches). [iv], 208pp. Half-title. Contemporary English speckled calf. Rebacked, some offsetting from binding at edges of preliminaries and terminal leaves, free endpaper slightly chipped at edges, L1-2 with offset stain. Provenance: armorial bookplate from a member of the Clayton family with motto "quod sors ferit fermus." Item #402920 FIRST EDITION of the first full biography of Handel in any language, with a catalogue of his works. It also provides a summary of music at the end of the Baroque era. The English theologian Mainwaring collaborated with John Christopher Smith, Jr. and Robert Price on the text, and the catalogue was prepared by James Harris. The biography occupies the first 143 pages and is followed by the catalogue of his works, divided into Church Music, Theatrical Music, and Chamber Music. This is followed, on pages 159 to the end, by observations on Handel's works (by Price). "Though he was evidently conversant with music, he devoted most of his attention to the broad outlines of Handel's life and to a multitude of charming anecdotes about the great man, reserving the detailed discussion of the music for Price's portion of the book. Mainwaring probably obtained most of his information from John Christopher Smith, Jr. (1712-1795), a composer who-like his father-worked for Handel for many years in a variety of capacities and consequently knew him well. It is not clear if Mainwaring ever had the opportunity to interview Handel directly" ("Histories of Music," exhibit at Yale University Libraries, Winter-Spring 2011). … [Click Below for Full Description]

Goes from title leaf to page 5. Also, last page of text is only partially there (see pic). Also, some additional pages are trimmed short, or very oddly, unfortunately not uncommon in those days. All in all, though, still a nice copy of a SCARCE early Connecticut imprint before the American Revolution. Not Ex-Lib.
