LUTHER, Martin
London: Printed and sold by M. Lewis, 1760. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer." ― Martin Luther Martin Luther is one of the most iconic and well-recognized figures of the Protestant Reformation. His theological teachings which rejected many of the Roman Catholic Church's doctrines were polarizing in the development of Renaissance Protestantism. He translated the Bible into German and added commentary which would influence how the Bible was translated in centuries moving forward. In addition to Bible commentaries, Luther published hymns, catechisms, and sermons.

OLIVER WOLCOTT, JR.
OLIVER WOLCOTT, JR. (1760-1833). Wolcott, the son of the Signer, was the second Treasury Secretary who remained in the Adams administration. He negotiated the end of the XYZ Affair. JONATHAN DAYTON (1760-1824). Dayton, a politician from New Jersey, was the youngest Constitution Signer, a Senator and the third Speaker of the House of Representatives. THE XYZ AFFAIR. During the mid-1790s, France and England were at war, and the United States declared its neutrality. At the same time, the United States stopped paying its war-time debt to France, declaring that it owed its money to the Bourbons, not the Republic of France. In 1796, France began seizing American ships, especially if they were trading with England. Three American diplomats, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, Elbridge Gerry and John Marshall, went to France to negotiate in July 1797. Agents of the French Foreign Minister Talleyrand demanded bribes before starting negotiations; the Americans refused. By the summer of 1797, the French had taken over 300 American ships in the previous year; the next year, the conflict grew into the XYZ Affair / Quasi-War. In March 1800, President Adams decided to end hostilities with France, and sent William Vans Murray, Oliver Ellsworth and William R. Davie to Paris to negotiate a treaty. A basic convention was signed in Paris on September 30, 1800, and then was returned to Washington for approval.ALS. 3pg. 8” x 10”. September 7, 1798. Trenton [New Jersey]. [Np. Norwich, England? 1760s?]. [1]p. Broadside. 12½ x 8½ inches. Laid paper; printed in two columns. Superscription "Third Part" in manuscript written above title. Fold lines; staining at top and bottom edges; some losses to paper at edges, not affecting text; else very good. Unrecorded eighteenth century polemical broadside in the tradition satirist Ned Ward or the mock poem Hudibras. While the present broadside includes only a few lines of poetry, like Hudibras it appears to describe a religious controversy between a "Methodist Grub-Street Printer" named Don Dismallo Thickscullo de Halfwitto and another printer, Dicko-Don-Quacko.The broadside reports that the printers' dispute was also carried out in dueling newspapers, the eighteenth century equivalent of an internet "flame war." That the dispute was ongoing seems to be implied in the manuscript addition written at the top of the broadside: "Third Part." The broadside states: "The Methodists and their Printer having erected their Battery of Lampoonary against the Printer of the Paper call'd Helter Skelter, He hereby declares a Paper War, against all Dicko Don Quack's Mendicant Crew..." A mention in the broadside of a work printed by the "Methodist Grub-Street Printer" concerning Pondicherry may well help to date the broadside to after 1761 when British forces in India defeated the French at Pondicherry. An account of a legal dispute between two printers found in a 1768 English literary annual, The British Palladium, may well shed light on the controversy outlined in the present broadside and suggests a possible pl … [Click Below for Full Description]

San Sebastián Martir [Atzacoalco]. Parish. Mexico.
Mexico: No publisher/printer, ca. 1760]. Folio (31 cm, 12.5"). [2] ff. On 4 April 1761 Juana Maria Francisca Altamira joined this sodality founded in the parish of San Sebastian Martir in Mexico City. She paid her 25 pesos and was given this very handsome 3-page certificate of membership. On its first page is the Patent establishing the organization's "contract," which is the usual one in such cases: Members contribute money and, upon their deaths, the congregación will take care of their funeral expenses and the corresponding masses. Much less "as usual," => this sodality accepts women, while also noting that it doesn't admit elderly people, pregnant women, or sick people. The second and third pages establish the indulgences that are to be given to the members of the sodality. On the blank back of the third page, a manuscript note records it that the owner of this patent has died and that a payment of 25 pesos was made to her family. The elegant and elaborate first, "Patente" page is bordered on three sides by printer's ornaments and above the main text, within these, is => an exquisite large engraving by Jose Morales of Mary flanked by two male saints, St. Sebastian with his arrows (on her left) and St. Joseph with his blooming staff (on her right). Above her in a cloud is Christ with a chalice and holding the Host. Minor worm meander in all leaves in one small area affecting the engraving and a small portion of the interior text. => Very good condition, with all manuscript additions legible (including signatures) and with the paper seal intact.

JOSEPHO A COPERTINO - KORCZYNSKI, Kasjan.
1760. 8. 18 Bll. (A-E2). Ln. Tit. gestemp.

(NELSON, Thomas ) BACON, Nathaniel, & John Selden
London: printed for D. Browne, and A. Millar, 1760. London: printed for D. Browne, and A. Millar,, 1760. Quarto (292 x 231 mm). Contemporary calf, brown calf label. Joints just starting but still very firm, contents with some marginal worming not affecting text, front endpapers and first few leaves with some old fungal damage and staining (not affecting signature), light browning to contents. A good copy. The copy of the American Founding Father and signatory of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Nelson Junior (1738-1789), with his ownership signature to the front free endpaper; Nelson later struck through the signature (still wholly legible) and added a presentation note to his son William Nelson (1763-1803), thus reading "Tho.s Nelson jr. To Wm Nelson jr". The book was published in 1760, when Thomas was in England studying at Cambridge University. The book does not seem to have been actively imported into America by the publisher or by booksellers: no copy is listed in William Hamilton Bryson's Census of Law Books in Colonial Virginia (University of Press, 1978), or in Herbert A. Johnson's Imported Eighteenth-Century Law Treatises in American Libraries 1700-1799 (University of Tennessee Press, 1978). This suggests that Thomas acquired the book while in England, prior to returning to Virginia the following year; his signature probably dates from this time, with the strike-through and latter presentation added many years later. He named his son William after his own father, the onetime governor of Virginia, hence the "Wm Nelson Jr" of his inscription. Thomas Nelson p … [Click Below for Full Description]
