      M. Lambert, Paris 1760 - 8vo (200 x 123 mm). [2] i-xiv, [1] 2-247 [1] pp. Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards, spine gilt. Little browning and spotting to text. Lacking the two engraved plates. Ex-libris to front pastedown. A near fine copy. ---- Norman 487, D.S.B, Freitag 483. - First Edition. EXEEDINGLY RARE! In the work "Théorie du mouvement des comètes" ("Theory on the Movement of Comets" 1760) Clairaut predicted the date that Halley's comet would be at perihelion, the point it would be nearest the sun, was April 13, 1759. The actual date was March 13, just within the allowed-for margins of error. There was a suggestion that Halley's Comet be renamed for Clairaut and he was hailed as the "new Thales."

Memoirs of the Life of the Late George Frederic Handel. To which is added, A Catalogue of his Works, and Observations upon them

      R. and J. Dodsley, London 1760 - 8vo (8 x 5 inches). [iv], 208pp. Half-title. Contemporary English speckled calf. Rebacked, some offsetting from binding at edges of preliminaries and terminal leaves, free endpaper slightly chipped at edges, L1-2 with offset stain. Provenance: armorial bookplate from a member of the Clayton family with motto "quod sors ferit fermus." FIRST EDITION of the first full biography of Handel in any language, with a catalogue of his works. It also provides a summary of music at the end of the Baroque era. The English theologian Mainwaring collaborated with John Christopher Smith, Jr. and Robert Price on the text, and the catalogue was prepared by James Harris. The biography occupies the first 143 pages and is followed by the catalogue of his works, divided into Church Music, Theatrical Music, and Chamber Music. This is followed, on pages 159 to the end, by observations on Handel's works (by Price). "Though he was evidently conversant with music, he devoted most of his attention to the broad outlines of Handel's life and to a multitude of charming anecdotes about the great man, reserving the detailed discussion of the music for Price's portion of the book. Mainwaring probably obtained most of his information from John Christopher Smith, Jr. (1712-1795), a composer who-like his father-worked for Handel for many years in a variety of capacities and consequently knew him well. It is not clear if Mainwaring ever had the opportunity to interview Handel directly" ("Histories of Music," exhibit at Yale University Libraries, Winter-Spring 2011). The work was issued with and without an engraved portrait frontispiece; it is not present here. Gregory and Bartlett, i 162; Hirsch, i (Anhang) 38. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Barbarossa Rex Algerii Insignis Pyrata

1760 - The commander of the Ottoman Fleet in the Mediterranean. N.d. [ca. 1760]. N.p. Haid. 400 mm x 275 mm. Some creasing, strong impression. A striking mezzotint portrait of Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha (c. 1478 - 1546), Pasha of Algiers, privateer and Fleet Admiral of the Ottoman Navy. His leadership gained the Ottomans the dominance over the Mediterranean from 1538 (Batlle of Preveza) until 1571 (Battle of Lepanto); the honorary name Hayreddin was given to him by Suleiman The Magnificent, as reward for his command and actions in conquering Algiers, raiding Valencia, and ultimately being instrumental in the taking of Lepanto from the Spanish thus consolidating their naval supremacy. In 1540, in a desperate attempt to end the corsair threat to the Spanish domain and Christian shipping, King Charles V attempted to persuade Barbarossa to switch sides; he refused, and shortly after a fleet commanded by Andrea Doria and Cortes was sent to conquer Algiers, which ended in the defeat of the Spanish. From a series of mezzotint portraits copied after a set of small engravings after Claude Vignon, published in the early seventeenth century.

A Dictionary of the English Language. In Which the Words are Deduced from Their Originals, Explained in Their Different Meanings, and Authorized By the Names of the Writers in Whose Works They are Found. Extracted from the Folio Edition. [Two Volumes]

      J. Knapton (et al). Hardcover. London, 1760. 8vo, modern brown cloth. The second edition, corrected, and complete in two volumes with Vol. I containing A-K and Vol. II containing L-Z. A quite bright and well preserved set in a modern binding. Some brittleness to margins of title pages from contact with original binding, title page of second volume with archival tape on verso to strengthen a crease, contemporary ownership signatures of a J. Key Hampstead on heads of title pages, archival tape reinforcement to one leaf. An excellent set overall. The scarce second edition of Johnson's landmark work. "For the most part the Dictionary was able to demonstrate the fecundity of the language more comprehensively than any of its predecessors. Conscious that his primary role was to record the state of English vocabulary, rather than to legislate for its usage, Johnson registered the entire sweep of words from the crude and demotic to the most rarefied scientific terms and to recent fanciful forms imported from other languages." - Oxford DNB.       Coloniae Allobrogum, sumptibus Cl. & Ant Philibert, 1760. In-8 gr.

Memoirs of the Life of the Late George Frederic Handel To which is added, A Catalogue of his Works, and Observations upon them

London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1760. 8vo (8 x 5 inches).

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy

York and London, 1760-67 Nine volumes in five. Contemporary calf, morocco labels. Front free endpaper of vol. I detached, light touchups to spine of vol. I, light wear to joints. A fine set. An excellent copy of Tristram Shandy, one of the most innovative and ambitious works in English literature, from the library of Col. Ralph Isham, discoverer of the Boswell Papers. First edition. Signed by Sterne as usual in volumes 5, 7, and 9 to protect the book from piracy. After the first two volumes were rejected by Dodsley, the leading publisher of literature in London, Sterne revised them and had them published in York. The remaining volumes were published in London to great acclaim, though Johnson, Richardson, and Goldsmith expressed reservations on artistic and moral grounds. Johnson commented, "Nothing odd will do long. Tristram Shandy will not last." "Sterne's first genuine experiment in literature brought him in an instant a worldwide reputation" (DNB). This classic of English literature is one of the most innovative novels in the language and the progenitor of the "stream-of-consciousness" genre. The word "shandy," meaning "half-crazy," is fitting in this madcap, digressive novel, one of the strangest ever published. The famously inventive novel is also noteworthy for its fanciful typography and book design, such as the marbled paper leaf inserted at vol. 3, page 169, the blank page for the reader's imagined portrait of the widow Wadman (vol. 6, page 147), and the black page in the Alas, Poor Yorick! section (vol. 1, pp. 73-74). Because of its episodic nature, fine sets of first editions of Tristram Shandy are rare in the market. This is an especially splendid example. Provenance: bookplates of R. H. Isham, Lionel Damer, and Hobart F. Cole. Ralph H. Isham famously acquired the unpublished James Boswell papers from Malahide Castle, one of the greatest literary discoveries of the 20th century.
