        Rosier a cent-feuilles, foliace

Pierre Joseph Redoute (1759-1840)Illustrated plate from Choix des Plus Belles FleursParis: 1827-1833Hand-colored stipple engraving24 1/2" x 21" framed; framed in a beautiful gold leaf museum quality frame, mounted with archival materials and UV plexiglassExcellent conditionThe works of the great botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) seem to demand the invention of lofty praise. Described both as the ?Rembrandt? and the ?Raphael? of Flowers by nineteenth century writers, Redoute occupies a central position in the development of European botanical art.Born into a family of artists, Redoute's talents were recognized and encouraged from an early age. He studied botany with the noted naturalist Heritier de Brutelle, and learned the technique of painting in watercolor on vellum from Gerard van Spaendonck, Flower Painter to the King. By this master painter's own account, his pupil's work was finer.Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in this turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty books on natural history and archeology. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. It is essentially a technique of etching a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that can be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color and tone. The plates were painted with watercolor before each impression, creating a rich and subtle color quality that is deeply pressed into the paper. The most delicate highlights and details are then added by hand to finish each print according to the exquisite watercolor models that Redoute provided. This complex and delicate printing process combines the technical virtuosity and aesthetic sensitivity that characterize Redoute's remarkable body of work. The Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs is one of Redoute's last, and most personal works. It is a selection of favorite flowers and fruits by a master who had devoted a lifetime to the art of botanical illustration. The images include spectacular blossoms plucked from formal gardens, as well as the more modest blooms of wayside flowers. These small and richly colored plates convey an intimate sense of beauty that sets them apart from other botanical works.

AN IMPARTIAL ACCOUNT OF LIEUT. COL. BRADSTREET'S EXPEDITION TO FORT FRONTENAC. TO WHICH ARE ADDED, A FEW REFLECTIONS ON THE CONDUCT OF THAT ENTERPRIZE, AND THE ADVANTAGES RESULTING FROM ITS SUCCESS. By a Volunteer on the Expedition

London: Printed for T. Wilcox [et al], 1759.. [4],60pp. Modern half calf and marbled boards, gilt morocco label. Near fine. A scarce and important account of the French and Indian War, probably written by Bradstreet himself, a rising officer in the British Army. This work gives a detailed account of his most famous exploit, an audacious and skillfully coordinated expedition in the summer of 1758 through the New York wilderness and across Lake Ontario to destroy the French Fort Frontenac, a major turning point in the French and Indian War. A strong argument is also made that the time was ripe for seizing control of the Lakes from France, and that British forces needed to take a more offensive posture, the implication being that British commander James Abercromby should be replaced. "One of the best contemporary accounts of the war, possibly written by Bradstreet himself" - Howes. A copy of this sold at Christie's in June of 2011 for $12,500. HOWES B711, "b." SABIN 7301.         The Great Charter and Charter of the Forest, With Other Authentic

1759. Blackstone, Sir William [1723-1780]. The Great Charter and Charter of the Forest, With Other Authentic Instruments: To Which is Prefixed an Introductory Discourse, Containing the History of the Charters. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1759. [iv], lxxvi, [iv], 86 pp. As in many copies, the half-title and table of contents (Tabula) are bound between pp lxxvi and p. 1. Folio (13-1/2" x 10-1/2"). Contemporary morocco, bound for Thomas Hollis, gilt borders and large corner fleurons, gilt images of Britannia to center of front and rear boards, raised bands, diced gilt pattern and later period-style lettering piece to spine, corners and head of spine mended, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Some rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, minor wear to spine ends, front joint starting, hinges cracked, small early armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Copperplate initials and vignettes. Light toning to text, some offsetting from vignettes. Small early owner signature to verso of front free endpaper, interior otherwise clean. * First edition. Texts of documents in Latin, Blackstone's essay in English. The engraved dedication to the Earl of Westmoreland is surmounted with his armorial ensigns; initials in the text are ornamented with engravings of various buildings at Oxford University. The tail-pieces on pages lxxvi and 73 are historical vignettes; the other ten tail-pieces are facsimiles of the royal seals that are attached to the original documents. This remarkable work is esteemed for its production and scholarship. Its physical appeal was recognized as early as 1829 in Richard Thompson's An Historical Essay on the Magna Charta of King John, which described it as a "beautiful and rare edition." Blackstone's essay, which is based on a great deal of original research, argued that the charter was the foundation of English liberties. This idea, first proposed by Coke, was a central tenet of Whig ideology. More important, Blackstone's research into the original texts demonstrated that all earlier editions of the charter were based on the significantly different reissue of 1225, in the reign of Henry III, rather than the original one endorsed at Runnymede. His philological approach was highly influential; it establ

Jubilate Agno. Rejoice in the Lamb

Old Stile Press, 2012. Hard Cover. Fine. Hard Cover. Number 8 of 100 copies. Signed and numbered by Angela Lemaire. This is a particularly beautiful book from Frances and Nicolas McDowall of the Old Stile Press, who have been printing limited editions of fine books for more than thirty years. The text was written between 1759 and 1763 by Christopher Smart during his confinement in St. Luke's Hospital and other private asylums in London. Although Smart was not understood in his time, given his interest in the occult and supernatural which led to obscure and difficult to understand references in his writings, he is now recognized as a major poet and perhaps a genius (afterword) He was confined to asylums for the insane for what might be described as mental breakdowns that took the form of religious mania. In Jubilate Agno, Smart rejoices in the beauties of the world and the unseen forces of life. The splendid printing and striking illustrations of this edition capture his quest for beauty and for God. Nicolas writes in the colophon that he designed and printed this book as a humble tribute to the Gutenburg Bible. Printed in Truesdell type of Velin Arches paper. Lemaire's woodcuts and linocutes are printed from the original blocks. Bound in terracotta paste papers with a cream suede spine. House in grey cloth slipcase with woodcut illustration of cats affixed to one side. In fine condition. Unpaginated. PRI/072513.

Jasminum ramo uniflore, pleno, petalis coriaceis [Pl. XV]

[London]: 1759. Engraving, coloured by hand, by Ehret. 18 1/2 x 12 5/8 inches. Extremely rare: a very fine image by the greatest of all 18th century botanical artists. This plate is from the only engraved work produced and published by Ehret himself, 'Plantae et papilliones rariores' The Gardenia or Cape Jasmine (Gardenia augusta) is native to southern China, Taiwan, Japan and nearby regions of the subtropical eastern hemisphere. The common name Cape Jasmine comes from the mistaken idea that the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa was the Gardenia's homeland. Also, as the title of the present work demonstrates, it was initially assumed to be a member of the Jasmine family. The present image is from Ehret's Plantae et papilliones rariores (London, 1748-1759). It was published by subscription in very small numbers, consisted of 15 plates without title or text and is the only work where Ehret carried out his own engraving. The present plate is representative of Ehret at the height of his powers: his 'approach was a fine compromise between that of the artist and that of the scientist: he did not slavishly imitate what he saw nor did he allow his feeling for colour and design to distract him unduly from the fundamentals of plant structure. Artists and botanists alike, therefore, join in praising his work... he has... his own peculiar qualities - a sureness of touch, vigour of handling, and an unerring instinct for design' (Blunt & Stearn pp.164-166). Cf. Calmann pp.93-4; cf. Dunthorne 109; cf. Great Flower Books (1990), p.93; cf. Henrey III, 677; cf. Nissen BBI 583; cf. An Oak Spring Flora 50; cf. Pritzel 2641; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 1644.

A Natural and Civil History of California: Containing an Accurate Description of that Country, its Soil, Mountains Etc

London: James Rivington and James Fletcher, 1759. 2 volumes. 8vo., (8 x 5 inches). Engraved frontispiece in each volume (that to volume one with expert repair at platemark) and two engraved plates, fine engraved folding map "of California drawn by the Society of Jesuits" (tear near mount repaired on verso) (light browning). Contemporary half tan calf, marbled boards (rebacked to style). Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Nicholas Garry (?1782-1856), deputy Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company (1822-1835). First English edition. "This translation gave the English-speaking world its earliest thorough account of the little-known areas of the west coast of North America. This work has been cited as the first book in English completely devoted to California" (Hill 1768). Miguel Venegas, a brilliant Mexican-born Jesuit, transferred a longing to serve in the new California missions, thwarted by ill-health, to intense study of the territory's history. In researching what would become a detailed history of the territories of present-day California, Baja California, southern Arizona and the northern Sonora, "Venegas employed the highest level of historical methodology, collecting original manuscripts, annual reports, and letters of … numerous other missionaries in California and Sonora… In 1735, Father Provincial Juan Antonio de Oviedo ordered that all archival material relative to California be provided to Father Venegas who also employed a novel form of acquiring information: detailed questionnaires covering the left half of the sheet, leaving the right half of the same sheet for answers, that were sent to persons who had participated in or were currently active in the California mission field" (W. Michael Mathes, art. in Dorothy Sloan, The Daniel Volkmann Collection of the Zamorano 80, 5 Feb. 2003, p. 280). Venegas's account of California reached a wide audience both through the first Spanish edition and translations into English (1759) [as here], Dutch (1762), French (1767) and German (1769).       Pierre Joseph Redoute (1759-1840)Illustrated plate from Choix des Plus Belles FleursParis: 1827-1833Hand-colored stipple engraving23 1/4" x 19 1/2" framed; framed in a beautiful museum quality frame with gold leaf details, mounted with archival materials and UV plexiglassExcellent conditionThe works of the great botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) seem to demand the invention of lofty praise.

THE GENUINE ACCOUNT OF THE TRIAL OF EUGENE ARAM, FOR THE MURDER OF DANIEL CLARK, LATE OF KNARESBOROUGH, IN THE COUNTY OF YORK , WHO WAS CONVICTED AT YORK ASSIZES, AUGUST 3, 1759 ... TO WHICH, AFTER A SHORT NARRATIVE OF THE FACT, IS PREFIXED, AN ACCOUNT OF THE REMARKABLE DISCOVERY OF THE HUMAN SKELETON AT ST. ROBERT'S COVE ... [&c]

York: Printed by A. Ward, for C. Etherington ... Newcastle upon Tyne: reprinted by Order of the Proprietor, 1759.. [2],42pp. Octavo. 19th century three quarter morocco and marbled boards, partially untrimmed. Bookplate, extremities rubbed, scattered foxing and old vertical crease (prior to binding); a good copy. Denoted the "Third Edition," but an interesting variant, with the addition of the Newcastle subsidiary imprint. ESTC locates two variants of the "third edition," and this shares the Arabic imprint date and line break of line 11 with ESTC N10016, but this variant with the subsidiary imprint is not reported in ESTC. So sensational was the case, and the popular interest so high, that there were at least nine editions in 1759 from London, York, Leeds and Dublin, and reprints and expanded editions appeared well into the 19th century. Aram stood for his own defense, arguing against the reliability of the circumstantial evidence (the skeleton identified as Clark's), but was convicted. While he was awaiting execution, he confessed, attributing his actions to his discovery that Clark was having an affair with his wife, and attempted suicide. The case was popularized by Bulwer- Lytton in his novel, by Thomas Hood in a ballad, and served as a point of reference in works by Wodehouse and George Orwell. The various 1759 editions/printings range from scarce to quite rare. ESTC N10016 (ref).

Contemporary calf, gilt rules with corner thistle devices to boards, rebacked in period style, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, marbled endpapers, hinges mended. Light rubbing and some shallow scuffing to boards, areas near joints somewhat darkened. Light toning to text, early armorial bookplate (of E. Wyatt Edgell) to front pastedown, (illegible) early signature to front endleaf. A handsome copy. His philological approach was highly influential; it established the textual focus that has governed subsequent study of the charter. Eller notes that Worrall's Bibliotheca Legum Angliae (1788) lists an edition from 1758 with the title Magna Charta and Charta de Foresta. She was not able to locate any
