Printed Admiralty order regarding venereal disease amongst sailors, signed by Anson and others

London: Office of the Admiralty, 1757. Folio, 6 pages plus integral blank; folded to docket size with manuscript annotation "Admiralty New Instructions relating to Surgeons"; a bit rubbed but very good condition indeed. A scarce and desirable relic of eighteenth-century naval life: an official printed order from the Admiralty concerning the treatment of venereal disease amongst seamen, signed by three Admirals including the famous privateer and Pacific voyager George Anson. The order concerns the treatment of venereal disease by navy surgeons, ordering that some 15 shillings be deducted from the wages of each sailor to cover the cost incurred by the Navy. Gonorrhoea and syphilis were the bane of naval life, and this document laments both the spread of disease and seemingly impossible task of curbing the adventures of men during their time on shore: 'Having taken into consideration the great charge upon the seamen and others serving in the fleet, for Cure of Venereal Distempers, and that the same does not answer the desired effect of punishing to such a Degree, as to prevent the Men from running the Risque of getting those Distempers'The document is fully signed "Anson", followed by the signatures of two other Admirals (Forbes and Stanley).

Lesure p. 544 (refers to announcement in Mercure de France, December 1757). Little is known about the composer. He has no entry in the standard reference works (New Grove, MGG, Fétis, etc.); even his name is not clear: RISM, Lesure, and most library catalogues record it as "Romain de Brasseur," without a first name, but it seems that "Romain" was actually his first name. Genealogical websites suggest that he had a daughter born in 1770. The present publication, styled "op. 1," is probably his first. Additional editions of music, numbered up to op. 4, were published in the 1770s. As late as 1807, La Revue philosophique, littéraire et politique (issue no. 13—May 1, 1807, pp. 233-34) reviewed a piano tutor, entitled Nouvelle méthode pour le Forte-Piano, by Romain de Brasseur. The dedicatee is the eminent French violinist and composer Pierre Gaviniès (1728-1800). The Meyer collection, formed over a period of some 75 years, was one of the most important collections of printed music, musical autographs, and books on music of the 20th century.

Rare edition in four volumes of the book recounting the sensational trial of Robert-François Damiens, the last of France quartered, condemned for his attempted assassination of Louis XV. After the sentence, Damiens have had this terse famously "the day will be tough." The story goes that the sentence has been executed in atrocious conditions: more than two and a quarter during which the punishment of torturers go about sixty times a few hours because we were not allowed to cut the joints, as well as it was custom. The real torture scene is described by Voltaire in his History of the Parliament of Paris, but also by Casanova in his famous memoirs: "We had the consistency to stay four hours on this horrible show I can not say anything because I did. would be too long, and besides, it is known to everyone. We do not know if Damiens was a fanatic who tried to kill Louis XV, or a father wanting to punish the king of having abused his daughter and believing do a good work. It is believed that he did not try to kill but to wound with a knife, but the king bled a lot and thought his last hour. The people present at his execution called monster hell vomited to assassinate the best of kings he believed to worship, and he called the Beloved. [...] The people of France, said even Voltaire, is the most abominable of all people. chameleon who makes all the colors, and capable of everything a chef wants him to do good or bad. " The book, a series of interro-negative questions and evidence of guilt reflects the judicial proceedings of the time; guilt is proven, sought to extort confession by all the rhetorical devices; the trial took most naturally to the implementation that we know, showing that once the judicial machine launched, it can not be stopped, while Louis XV himself was eager to spare his life. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

1757 - Handsome illustrated work dealing with the history of Guadalajara and Nueva Galicia, promoting indigenous Saints. 1757. Mexico. Imprenta de la Biblioteca Mexicana. In 4to (195 mm x 142 mm). 12 ff. + 206 + 7 ff. + 3 copper-engraved plates. Contemporary full vellum, spine lettered in ink, minor wrinkling, ties perished, text block becoming somewhat loose. Slight toning, however overall a very fine, fresh copy, in its entirely genuine condition. Second edition, the first was published in 1694 (with lesser illustrations). A beautiful Mexican colonial printing, handsomely illustrated with three full-page plates. Florencia´s is an important source for the history of Guadalajara and Nueva Galicia (current Jalisco, Zacatecas, Colima, and Aguascalientes), and the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Tzapopán and San Juan de los Lagos Churches. Florencia (1620 – 1695) was a Florida born Jesuit Priest, theologian, historian and writer –as evidenced by this work. An interesting aspect of his ascendance is the fact that he unequivocally promotes indigenous Saints, preaches on the virtues of the Mexican people, and praises the labour of the Jesuits. A fierce defender of the cultural independence of Americans, he may be considered instrumental to the establishment of a separate Mexican national identity. Dedicated to Francisco de S. Buenaventura Martinez Texada, Bishop of Yucatan and Guadalaxara. The engravings are: 1- “Milagrosa Imagen de Na. Sa. de Tzapopan”, showing the Lady of Zapopán wearing a crown and a halo stands, the Virgin of Zapopan is said to have interceded between the Spanish and the native population during the European conquest of Mexico; 2- “Hac Crux Gentiles, qui nollunt esse Salutis Ut credant Signum, credere nata docet”, showing the Prodigious Grass Cross of Tepic; and “V.R. de la Milagrosa Ymagen de Na. Sa. Juan de los Lagos” portraying the Virgin of San Juan of the Lakes. A half page woodcut displays the arms of Francisco de San Buenaventura Martínez de Texada Diez de Velasco, Bishop of Yucatan. The work proved popular and a best seller, with 6 editions published up to the 18th century. “The Prodigious Grass Cross of Tepic is exceptionally interesting and highly unusual, giving a birds-eye view of the Tepic region, the Cross, and its history, with a precision and attention to detail one might expect to find in a map rather than in the rendering of a miracle The engravings and their accompanying text all deal with themes indigenous to Mexican Catholicism.” (Dorothy Sloan).         Carte Reduite des Isles Britanniques - Dressée aux Depost des Cartes, Plans, et Journaux de la Marine

Paris: Bellin. Original Map with a 4 cm tear (repaired). Only very mild signs of foxing. A very beautiful and large map of the British Isles.. Paris, Bellin, 1757. Original, hand-coloured engraving. The engraving (the plate) itself 55.5 cm x 90 cm. Outer Margins 67 cm wide x 97 cm high. Original Map with a 4 cm tear (repaired). Only very mild signs of foxing. A very beautiful and large map of the British Isles. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 ?- 21 March 1772) was a French hydrographer, geographer, and member of the French intellectual group called the philosophes. Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, member of the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50-year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine. His maps of Canada and of French territories in North America (New France, Acadia, Louisiana) are particularly valuable. He died at Versailles. In 1721, at age 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographical Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King. During his reign the Depot came out with prodigious amount of charts and maps among which was a large folio format sea-charts of France, the Neptune Francois. He also produced a number of sea-atlases of the world, e.g., the Atlas Maritime and the Hydrographie Francaise. These gained fame, distinction and respect all over Europe and were republished throughout the 18th and even in the succeeding century. Bellin also came out with smaller format maps such as the 1764 Petit Atlas Maritime (5 vols.) containing 580 finely detailed charts. Bellin set a very high standard of workmanship and accuracy thus gaining for France a leading role in European cartography and geography. Many of his maps were copied by other mapmakers of Europe. He was one of the Encyclopédistes, a group of 18th century intellectuals in France who compiled the 35-volume Encyclopédie which was edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. Bellin contributed 994 articles. The Encyclopédistes, were part of the group called philosophes among whose members were the great minds of the Age of Enlightenment, e.g., Montesquieu, Voltaire, Rousseau, Baron d'Holbach. Bellin contributed a number of maps to 15-vol. Histoire Generale des Voyages of Antoine François Prévost or simply known l'Abbe Prevost. One of these maps led to a geographical blunder whose impact reverberates to this day. This was the map of the Philippines which Bellin copied from a world-famous chart produced in 1734 by the Spanish missionary to the Philippines, Fr. Pedro Murillo Velarde. Unlike many other European mapmakers of the time who outright appropriated Murillo's map, Bellin had the intellectual integrity to fully credit Murillo as his source, an open acknowledgement shown in the title cartouche of Bellin's map which came out the same year as the original work by Murillo. Shown in Bellin's map was an island named "Limasava", a word invented in 1667 by Spanish friar, Fr. Francisco Combés, S.J., to refer to the way station of the Armada de Molucca under the command of the Portuguese captain-general Fernao de Magalhaes during its navigation in Philippine waters. Combés, who had not read a single eyewitness account of the Magellan expedition relied on two sources, the hopelessly garbled Italian translation of the Antonio Pigafetta account by Giovanni Battista Ramusio and the secondhand account by Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas. Ramusio wrote the fleet anchored in March?-April 1521 in Butuan in Mindanao, and from there sailed for Cebu with a brief stopover at "Messana". In the authentic Pigafetta account, the port was an isle named Mazzaua while the stopover isle was named Gatighan. Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas gave a faithful narration of the Mazzaua anchorage. Combés disregarded de Herrera's version and adopted Ramusio's. He wrote that Magellan's fleet had anchored at Butuan and from their sailed for Cebu making a stop at a way station he named Limasaua. Five years earlier than Combés, Fr. Francisco Colín wrote the Armada moored at Butuan from March?-April 1521 where Magellan and his men together with the natives celebrated an Easter Sunday mass on 31 March 1521. From Butuan the fleet sailed for Cebu making a brief stop at a way station he called "Dimasaua", an invented word meaning "this is not the Mazagua of Antonio de Herrera where supposedly an Easter Sunday mass was held which I already said happened in Butuan." This episode was projected in the 1734 map made by Murillo who used Combés name, "Limassava" not "Dimasaua" which map Bellin copied. In 1789, Augustinian Carlo Amoretti, Italian Encyclopedist and librarian of Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, discovered the authentic Italian manuscript of Antonio Pigafetta among the scattered holdings of the library. Here it came out that the port of March?-April 1521 was not Butuan but Mazaua. Amoretti, who himself had not read any of five eyewitness reports of the incident including two French versions of Pigafetta's account, asserted in a footnote that Mazaua was probably the isle named Limasava in Bellin's map, thus interchanging the real port of Mazaua with the way station Gatighan. Largely with the appearance of the eyewitness account of Ginés de Mafra, the only seaman in Magellan's fleet to return to Mazaua, whose testimony reveals a concrete, measurable description of Mazaua, the skein starting from the garbled version of Pigafetta by Ramusio to the mishandling by Combés to Bellin and finally to Amoretti has been unraveled: Pigafetta's Gatighan is Bellin's Limasava. Combes, who had not read a single eyewitness account of the Magellan expedition relied on two sources, the hopelessly garbled Italian translation of the Antonio Pigafetta account by Giovanni Battista Ramusio and the secondhand account by Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas. Ramusio wrote the fleet anchored in March-April 1521 in Butuan in Mindanao, and from there sailed for Cebu with a brief stopover at "Messana". In the authentic Pigafetta account, the port was an isle named Mazzaua while the stopover isle was named Gatighan. Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas gave a faithful narration of the Mazzaua anchorage. Combes disregarded de Herrera's version and adopted Ramusio's. He wrote that Magellan's fleet had anchored at Butuan and from their sailed for Cebu making a stop at a way station he named Limasaua. Five years earlier than Combes, Fr. Francisco Colin wrote the Armada moored at Butuan from March-April 1521 where Magellan and his men together with the natives celebrated an Easter Sunday mass on 31 March 1521. From Butuan the fleet sailed for Cebu making a brief stop at a way station he called "Dimasaua", an invented word meaning "this is not the Mazagua of Antonio de Herrera where supposedly an Easter Sunday mass was held which I already said happened in Butuan." This episode was projected in the 1734 map made by Murillo who used Combes name, "Limassava" not "Dimasaua" which map Bellin copied. In 1789, Augustinian Carlo Amoretti, Italian Encyclopedist and librarian of Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, discovered the authentic Italian manuscript of Antonio Pigafetta among the scattered holdings of the library. Here it came out that the port of March-April 1521 was not Butuan but Mazaua. Largely with the appearance of the eyewitness account of Gines de Mafra, the only seaman in Magellan's fleet to return to Mazaua, whose testimony reveals a concrete, measurable description of Mazaua, the skein starting from the garbled version of Pigafetta by Ramusio to the mishandling by Combes to Bellin and finally to Amoretti has been unraveled: Pigafetta's Gatighan is Bellin's Limasava.
