[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition in-12, published the same year as the original in-4, although its complete table of contents that was sold separately. Cuts and caps highlighted with golden threads. All marbled. A threadbare tail cap, a weakly broken tail. Some very tiny worm work on the joints. Nice copy. . Rare edition in four volumes of this book traces the sensational trial of Robert-François Damiens, quartered last of France, condemned for his assassination attempt on Louis XV After the sentence, Damiens would have this famously laconic " the day will be tough. " History has it that the sentence is executed in atrocious conditions: more than two hours and a quarter ordeal during which the executioners had to take it to some sixty times because we were not allowed to cut the joints, as well as it was customary.

Adjunctis fragmentis quibusdam eroticis

ex Officina Elzeviriana, Amstelodami 1757 - 8vo, 2 parts in 1, pp. [2], xxiv, 211, [1]; [4], 172; engraved frontispiece, printer's woodcut device on both title pages; contemporary full mottled calf, double gilt rules on covers, smooth gilt-decorated spine laid out in 6 compartments, red morocco label in 1; corners showing, upper joint cracked, but still a nice copy. Willems 2178 noting that the book was actually printed in Paris by Barbou. From an old bookseller's catalog entry (laid in) "A blasphemous and erotic work foisted by Chorier on the pious and learned Spanish savante Louise Sigée, as translated into French by Jean de Meurs. Chorier's own works, however, are so mediocre that it is difficult to believe that he could have written this little masterpiece. What is now thought more likely is that a manuscript of one of Westrene's erotica came into his hands and that he had it published as a joke. This edition which is published as a pseudo-Elzevir is probably the work of the Compte d'Estaing who has added some additional material." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

First edition in-12, published the same year as the original in-4, although its complete table of contents that was sold separately.Copy the arms stamped on covers of Count de Broc (Britain), Lord of the Mill and Jumelière, Azure, a chevron, accompanied of three crescents, all gold.Binders full mottled calf blond at the time. back smooth decorated with parts of title and volume number of red morocco and Havana, as well as boxes and gilded florets. boards to arms. Cuts and caps highlighted with golden threads. All marbled. A threadbare tail cap, a weakly broken tail. Some very tiny worm work on the joints. Nice copy.. This veritable torture scene is described by Voltaire in his History of the Parliament of Paris, but also by Casanova in his famous memoirs: "We had the constancy to stay four whole hours in this horrible spectacle. I will say nothing, because I would be too long, and besides, it is known to everyone. It is not known if Damiens was a fanatic who tried to kill Louis XV, or a father wanting to punish the king of having abused his daughter and thinking do a good work. We think he did not try to kill but to injure him with a knife, but the King bled a lot and thought his last hour. This people to their torment called hell monster vomited to assassinate the best of kings he believed to worship, and he called the Beloved. [...] The people of France, said M. de Voltaire even, is the most abominable of all peoples. Chameleon who takes all colors, and capable of everything a chef wants him to do good or bad. "The book, a series of interrogative and negative issues of guilt evidence testifies to the judicial proceedings of the time; guilt is proved, sought to extort a confession by any rhetorical means; trial led him naturally to the performance that we know, demonstrating that once launched the judicial machine, we can not stop it, while Louis XV himself was eager to spare his life.         Joannis Meursii Elegantiae Latini sermonis seu Aloisia Sigaea Toletana De arcanis amoris et veneris. Adjunctis fragmentis quibusdam eroticis

Amstelodami: ex Officina Elzeviriana. 1757. "8vo, 2 parts in 1, pp. From an old bookseller's catalog entry (laid in) ""A blasphemous and erotic work foisted by Chorier on the pious and learned Spanish savante Louise Sigée, as translated into French by Jean de Meurs. Chorier's own works, however, are so mediocre that it is difficult to believe that he could have written this little masterpiece. What is now thought more likely is that a manuscript of one of Westrene's erotica came into his hands and that he had it published as a joke. This edition which is published as a pseudo-Elzevir is probably the work of the Compte d'Estaing who has added some additional material."""

A devout Christian, Alberto von Haller's own beliefs found struggle with the results of his examinations and experiments. Nonetheless, Haller was willing to alter his views when presented with evidence, and Elementa Physiologiae Corporis Humani maintains his dedication towards the goal of compiling a complete physiological understanding of the human body. While this set is not his only work on physiology, it is the most complete work on the topic of its age, when the role of the soul in the function of the body was being brought into question. The extent of his research can be seen in such details as his study on the role of bile in digesting fats, an idea which became lost to time and then rediscovered some years later. Eimas, 886.

A Prospect on the River Manyfold, at Wetton-Mill

London: Published by Smith, 1757. Engraving with beautiful hand-colour. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In good condition with the exception of some staining in the margins. Two creases along bottom corners. Label on verso of sheet. Image size: 15 x 20 7/8 inches. A stunning view of the River Manyfold, by Smith of Derby, one of the most celebrated English landscape painters. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. One of the earliest and most influential landscape artists to begin this trend was Thomas Smith who came to be known as "Smith of Derby". Smith traveled the north of England painting famous houses and beautiful views. He was one of the first artists to depict wild landscape scenes, which became immensely fashionable with the development of the "picturesque landscape" towards the end of the century. Smith's paintings not only captured the English countryside at the onset of the Industrial Revolution, but also recorded the activities of visiting tourists and local inhabitants. These works capture a period in England's history, which was forever changed by the wheels of progress. Before the mills and the factories came to dominate the landscape of northern England Smith depicted its wild beauty and breathtaking scenery. This lovely print comes from a suite of eight views of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, produced by Smith around 1743. The views were then engraved and offered for sale by subscription, along with letterpress explanations of the sites. This important suite represent the first appearance of precipes and cascades in English landscapes, and mark a pivotal point in the concept of the countryside as sublime. The set was republished twice, first by Smith in 1757 and later by Boydell in 1769. This print is from Smith's second edition. Wetton Mill in the distance was a river run mill for grinding corn. River Manyfold (now Manifold) appears well-named as it forms a large loop before the viewer. Wetton is in Staffordshire. Clayton The English Print 1688-1802 page 155-157, 299.

A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD BY WAY OF THE GREAT SOUTH SEA: PERFORMED IN A PRIVATE EXPEDITION DURING THE WAR, WHICH BROKE OUT WITH SPAIN, IN THE YEAR 1718

London, 1757. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt. Some scuffing and wear to boards and hinge, corners lightly worn. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Minor scattered soiling and foxing. A nice copy in unsophisticated condition. Very good. The third and best edition (styled "second edition, with additions" on the title), after the first of 1726. Shelvocke was engaged in a privateering expedition against Spanish shipping on the Pacific coast of America. He sailed as far north as Baja California, and two of the plates depict men and women of that peninsula. He also reported gold in the region. A storm had separated Shelvocke's ship from the accompanying vessel on the expedition, and Shelvocke did not wait for the captain of that ship at the agreed locations in the Canaries and Juan Fernandez islands; instead, he sailed for Brazil and then to the west coast of South America, including stops at Payta, Peru, and Lower California. Two of the plates are notable for their depictions of California natives. Shelvocke returned home via Guam and Macao. Upon his return to England he was accused of piracy and taken prisoner. Betagh, in the preface to his book about the same expedition, describes Shelvocke's book as "entirely a deception, and his whole conduct a disgrace to his country." Hill notes that "this second [actually third] edition is superior to that of the first edition of 1726. It was edited by Shelvocke's son, who corrected the text extensively in a further effort to vindicate his father from charges of piracy and embezzlement." The folding map depicts Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, with the route of the voyage traced. "The whole history of this expedition is a curious commentary upon the morals of the times. The English had passed out of the freebooting stage, strictly speaking, and were now eager to cover their privateering exploits with a little more clothing than in the preceding century" - Wagner. An important English Pacific voyage. HILL 1558. HOWES S383, "aa." COWAN, pp.581-82. WAGNER SPANISH SOUTHWEST 88. BORBA DE MORAES, p.796. SABIN 80159. BARRETT 2261 (note).

He never married, living for most of his life with his mother and sister. Although Charles Wesley junior is much less well known than his brother Samuel Wesley, h was like Samuel regarded as a musical prodigy in childhood and he was playing the organ before the age of 3. He became a professional musician adulthood, and Matthews (1971) quotes the European Magazine of 1784 as reporting that "his performance on the organ has given supreme delight". However he did not enjoy public performance, and worked mainly as a private organist, at one time to the Prince Regent.

"Publii Virgilii Maronis. Bucolica, Georgica, et Aenis."

Birmingham: John Baskerville. 1757. "First edition of Baskerville's first (""perhaps finest"") book, and certainly the most complicated bibliographically (see Gaskell for a 5-p. discussion); 4to, pp. [10], 432; contemporary full calf, elaborate gilt borders on covers, gilt-decorated spine in 7 compartments, red morocco label in 1, a.e.g.; some scuffing, but a near fine, large (11¼"" tall) copy. Gaskell 1, noting that ""900 copies were printed, at 1 guinea to subscribers; 200 of them were remaindered by 1762 at 14s."" A second edition, virtually identical, was (surreptitiously?) printed by Baskerville ca. 1771, which is identified by the positioning of the letter J in Johannis in the imprint. The first edition, as here, has the J between the B and the I in Birminghamiae; in the second edition it is to the left of the B. Generally considered to be Baskerville's finest production. A penciled note on the flyleaf notes that this is the Earl of Hardwicke's copy, based on the contemporary shelfmark on the facing page. Among the subscribers is Ben Franklin of Philadelphia who took six copies."

[2] ff., 79, [1 (blank)], 80–237 pp., [4], [49] ff., fold. plate, illus.. 1757] Very special ceremonies commemorated the death of a king or a queen. In Lima at the midpoint of the 18th century news arrived in the viceregal capital of the passing of Queen Maria Anna Josefa (1683–1754), consort of John V, King of Portugal. She died on 14 August and plans were immediately proposed for commemorating her life and death when the news arrived in Peru in the early months of 1755. Poems were solicited, designs for the ceremonial cenotaph were proposed, special events were planned, a sermon-giver was selected: And this volume was printed to tell later generations about those events as they were eventually accomplished on 15 March 1756. We learn from the volume who the special dignitaries were, who said what, and what the processions and the order of the marchers were; and we are given a detailed description of the cenotaph, its ornaments, and the texts of the poems and epigrams (chiefly on pp. 80 through 237) recited. => The editor, Alvitez, was a Franciscan. Fray Francisco Ponze de Leon, a Mercedarian, chief regent of the Royal University of San Marcos, gave the "Oracion funebre, que a la memoria de la fidelissima señora doña Mariana Josepha de Austria," which occupies the final 49 leaves here. Fray Antonio de Contreras, another Mercedarian, engraved the likeness of the elaborate cenotaph that the viceroy had constructed for the day honoring the late queen. => The plate is large and folding. The poems are romances, redondillas, sonnets, decimas, etc. => One poem is even an example of concrete poetry and two others are in Portuguese! (by Antonio Alberto, and Juan Julian Capetillo de la Sota, who also supplied a poem in ENGLISH). The poets include Viceroy Jose Manso de Velasco; Nicolás Sarmiento de Sotomayor y los Ríos del Campo, IV conde del Portillo; various other nobles; and one woman, Josefa Brava de Lagunas y Villela. Provenance: 19th-century bookplate of Guillermo Miguel Irarrazabal. The number of "splendid ceremonies" books produced in colonial Peru is small: There is no census but we suspect the number to be fewer than nine. Searches of NUC and WoldCat find only five copies in U.S. libraries, not all of them complete with the plate. Searches of WorldCat, COPAC, CCPB, and KVK locate only 4 other copies worldwide. Contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties. Unidentified rubber-stamp on front free endpaper (smudged, indistinct). Repair to rear free endpaper and small repair to folding plate. Clean, crisp, unwormed. A very good copy.

The Tatler addressed subjects ranging from "all accounts of Gallantry, Pleasure, and Entertainment" to poetry and learning, from proper etiquette to the character of the ideal gentleman. The Spectator "appeared daily, and was immensely popular, particularly with the new growing middle-class readership. The papers are mainly concerned with manners, morals, and literature. Their object is 'to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality'" (Drabble, 925-6). Together Addison and Steele set the pattern and established the vogue for the periodical in the 18th-century and helped create a receptive audience for the emerging art form of the novel. The Guardian was a short-lived newspaper published in London from 12 March to 1 October 1713. It was founded by Richard Steele and featured contributions from Joseph, Thomas Tickell, Alexander Pope and Ambrose Philips. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
