Artist: Vaugondy de Didier/ Gilles Robert (d) ; date: (d)1757 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 48 x 56; - description: Map of the post ways in Germany; - vita of the artist: Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723 -1786) also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. From him, they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material, which they combined with maps and plates acquired after Hubert Jaillot's death in 1712 to form the basis the Atlas Universel.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Paris; date: (d)1757 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 48 x 54; - description: Map shows Bohemia, Moravia, Lusatia and Silesia with beautyfull heraldic cartouche; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

        S. M. Charles X. Roi de France el de Navarre. Né à Versailles. 1757

Artist: Anonymus d ; issued in: Paris; date: d1757 - - technic: Copper print- Aquatinta; - colorit: colored; - condition: Tear on left and upper margin perfectly restored; - size (in cm): 55 x 36,5; - description: Charles X (Charles Philippe; 9 October 1757 ? 6 November 1836) was known for most of his life as the Count of Artois before he reigned as King of France from 16 September 1824 until 2 August 1830. An uncle of the uncrowned King Louis XVII, and younger brother to reigning Kings Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, he supported the latter in exile and eventually succeeded him. His rule of almost six years ended in the July Revolution of 1830, which resulted in his abdication and the election of Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans, as King of the French. Exiled once again, Charles died in Gorizia, then part of the Austrian Empire. He was the last of the French rulers from the senior branch of the House of Bourbon descended from King Henry IV.Charles's political awakening started with the first great crisis of the monarchy in 1786, when it became apparent that the kingdom was bankrupt from previous military endeavours (in particular the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence) and needed fiscal reform to survive. Charles supported the removal of the aristocracy's financial privileges, but was opposed to any reduction in the social privileges enjoyed by either the Church or the nobility. He believed that France's finances should be reformed without the monarchy being overthrown. In his own words, it was time for repair, not demolition.

Opera interessante e poco comune. Cfr.         De tumore ligamentorum circa articulos, fungo articulorum dicto.

      - Leiden, C. Wishoff, 1757. 4to. 4 Bl., 52 S., 1 Bl. Halbpergament d. Zeit (berieben u. verblaßt, Kanten bestoßen). Erste Ausgabe.

The doctrine of fluxions : not only explaining the elements thereof, but also its application and use in the several parts of mathematics and natural philosophy.

      J. Bettenham: and sold by W. Innys 1757 - Second edition. xvi, 432, [2] p., 102 folding plates, errata. Fine modern 3/4 leather over marbled boards, raised bands, black leather spine label, gilt rule. Minor toning, marginal soiling, tanning to title page. Errata page trimmed close. Emerson's first book. Emerson was an important supporter of Newtonian mathematics. From the preface: "To say anything in praise of the Method of Fluxions, or of its dignity and rank among the mathematical sciences, would be as needless as to describe the excellency of bright sunshine above the twinkling light of stars; since anyone who is acquainted with the sciences will allow it to be a method of calculation incomparably superior to all other methods that ever were known or found out; and beyond which nothing further is to be hoped or expected. It lens its aid and assistance to all the other mathematical sciences, and that in their greatest wants and distresses: It opens and discovers to us the secrets and recesses of Nature, which have always before been locked up in obscurity and darkness. To this all the noble and valuable discoveries of the last and present age are entirely owing: And by this method Sir Isaac Newton, the worthy inventor, determined and settled the system of the whole visible World." A fun aside. Emerson turned down FRS, stating: "It is a damned hard thing that a man should burn so many farthing candles as I have done, and then have to pay so much a year for the honour of F.R.S. after his name. When a man becomes eminent, he has to pay quarterly for it. This is the way ingenuity is rewarded in England. Damn them and their F.R.S. too." [Attributes: Hard Cover]
