The Spectator, Volume Sixth (Signed by James Wilson)

U.S. Constitution Signer?s Copy of an English Journalistic Classic Summary:  Boldly signed "James Wilson" in ink in blank portion of title. Tonson's 1757 complete edition of The Spectator was intended as a deluxe typographical production. Finely printed on heavy paper and embellished with vignettes by skilled engravers, it is a reflection of the enduring public regard for Addison and Steele's 555 daily papers (published from March 1711 to December 1712; 80 issues added in 1714). James Wilson.  Signed Book.  Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, The Spectator, Volume Sixth. London: Jacob and Richard Tonson, 1757.  Engraved vignette on titlepage.  Speckled sheep, covers gilt-ruled, spine gilt with red morocco gilt-lettered label. Quarter morocco gilt protective slipcase.# 21874     $2,000 Historical Background:  James Wilson (1742-1798) was born in Scotland and educated at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow, imbibing the principles of the Scottish Enlightenment. Unable to graduate due to his father?s death, Wilson emigrated to America, and became a tutor at the College of Philadelphia, and assistant to Pennsylvania lawyer John Dickinson. For many years, Wilson practiced law in Reading and Carlisle, and became a powerful force in Pennsylvania politics. In 1774, he published ?Considerations on the Nature and Extent of the Legislative Authority of the British Parliament, an influential revolutionary pamphlet. Wilson was twice elected to the Continental Congress, and served concurrently as a brigadier general in the state militia. Like other Pennsylvanians in Congress, including his mentor, Dickinson, Wilson was pressured by his constituents to forestall declaring independence. Wilson himself eventually changed his mind, voting for and signing the Declaration of Independence. As a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, Wilson sat on the Committee of Detail, which produced the first draft. He proposed the Three-Fifths Compromise, and was, next to James Madison, the most active participant in the Convention. Wilson was a major proponent for ratification in his home state, which became the second state to approve the new constitution in 1787. President Washington named him as one of the six original justices of the Supreme Court. Condition:Board edges a bit darkened, joints cracked.

        Le Decameron de Jean Bocacce

Londres: [i.e. Paris, Prault], 1757. The most sought after edition. With five engraved title pages (one in each volume). Some slight rubbing to covers, very slight occasional browning and foxing throughout (not affecting plates). Octavo. Five volumes Profusely illustrated by Hubert Francois Gravelot, Cochin, Boucher and Eisen with full page plates and tail pieces, engraved by Aliamet, Baquoy, Flipart, Legrand, Lemire, Lempereur, and others. The full page engravings in vols. I, !! and IV bear the "paraphe" indicating proof impressions full ox-blood red morocco, spines with raised bands and extra gilt, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Volume III very skillfully rebound to match quite some time ago, most likely late 1800s (no trimming of pages) With the bookplate of noted book collector Mary MacMillin Norton & Provenance: sold at Hotel Drouot in 1908. The first volume also contains "Vie de Jean Bocace, poete Florentin" (Life of the Florentine poet Jean Bocaccio) by Philippe-Matthieu Villani.& & The Tales of the Decameron were originally published in 1351 or 1353. The story has stories within the story; seven young women and three young men flee the Black Plague in Florence and stay at a villa in Fiesole, they tell stories to each over a period of fourteen days, except for the days of work and rest, so ten stories each day for ten days. In the stories Bocaccio is considered to have given himself the voice of Dioneo, who can choose to talk about any topic in his story. The stories deal with lust and greed, the clergy's especially; love stories between members of different societal classes, the wealthy merchants dealings with noble personage, tricks that people play on each other and similar topics.& & The illustrator, Hubert-François Gravelot, was a French engraver (1699, Paris - 1773) who also did illustrations and was an occasional figurative painter. He trained in Paris under Francois Boucher and later departed for London around 1732. There he became friends with William Hogarth and both of them taught at the St, Martin's Lane Academy (a precursor to the Royal Academy). One of his students was Thomas Gainsborough.& & He illustrated Gay's "Fables", and was one of the first artists to illustrate Richardson's "Pamela" and Fielding's "Tom Jones." Perhaps his most well known work of illustration is the "Decameron." Although other artists provided illustrations for the Decameron Gravelot created 89 of the 111 plates, and all 97 of the tailpieces. Bocaccio's stories and Gravelot's temparement were well suited to each other; he also found his way to depict the society around him by transposing Bocaccio's characters to the France of his [Gravelot] day.& & The plates in these volumes are first proofs of the illustrations and each one bears the monogram stamp in ink on the verso & [Cohen-de Ricci 160-1; Ray 39-4. Engraved portrait by P. F. Tardieu after E. J. Handmann & 6 plates.. Lausanne: Bousquet. . . , 1757-63 & Berne: Sumpt. Soc. Typogr., 1764-66. 8 vols. 240 x 187 mm. Garrison-Morton 588. The first comprehensive treatise of physiology, "a vast and well-systematized storehouse of physiological knowledge, replete with citation and an incredible number of accurate references to literature" (Fulton / Wilson 81). Also includes important anatomical descriptions. Haller's most original physiological contribuitons were the establishment of both concepts of sensibility and irritability, recognition of the cardiac automatism and confirmation of an airless pleural space. In addition, Haller rejected the concept of an active systole occuring in the cerebral membranes, and the previous attempts to localize the seat of the soul. Moreover, he clarified the relationships between the cerebellum and the motion of the heart as well as other vegetative functionsŸ (Rothschuh 130, also 125ff.). Lundsgaard-Fischer 284.
