Translated from the French. & This is the first edition in English of a classic military work by one of the world's most famous soldiers. Observing that the art of war is a science with no certainties or absolutes, Saxe (1696-1750) divides his book into two parts, the first examining the raising, feeding, clothing, exercising, paying, encamping, and moving of an army and its various parts, and the second covering the sublime or strategic aspect of combat, including attack and defense in various terrains, how to interpret the signs of enemy plans, and so on.& The last chapter contains the author's reflections on the propagation of the human species. overall a Very Good copy of this fairly important classic on 18th century warfare., Of noble birth, headstrong, and given to excess, Saxe served in the military from the age of 12 in various wars, including under Peter the Great against the Swedes. He gained international fame by his surprise capture of Prague in 1741 during the War of Austrian Succession, for which he was made Marshall of France. He was given independent command in the Netherlands, and his several successes there were due in large part to his strategy and leadership, and this despite being carried about, as dropsy made it impossible for him to sit on horseback. The translator here had a distinguished career as a soldier. Sir William Fawcett (1728-1804) enlisted as an ensign during the rebellion of 1745, resigned his commission to seek active duty in 1748, studied military tactics and discipline in Europe, and worked his way up through the ranks until in 1796 he was made full General and was considered the most important officer in the army. In all, Fawcett, whose various assignments included the hiring of mercenary troops to fight in the American.

        Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii

Augsburg, 1757. No Binding. Near Fine. 19½ x 22 5/8 inches. Original wash color; fine condition. A superb example of a richly engraved map of the Northeast, which includes a fascinating view of New York City with a rarely seen depiction of the original wall that would become Wall Street. Called the Restitutio View for its dramatic depiction of the restitution of Dutch power in the New York City in 1673, it shows Dutch soldiers marching south along the city's east side on their way to seizing the fort. Dutch rule in New York lasted only a single year before the English took final control in 1674. (See Manhattan in Maps, reference below, for an account of this surprising event in New York history.) The wall that stood where Wall Street now runs was in fact a wooden stockade, built in 1653, when word reached New Amsterdam of a planned though later aborted, English attack of the city. Atop the view, a monarch, possibly George II, is being presented with the bounty of America. Published the T. C. Lotter, this was the final edition of the very long-lived Jansson-Visscher series of maps. The Jansson map, which served as the template of the general map in the series, was one of the most durable prototypes in the mapping of America. cf. Augustyn/ Cohen, Manhattan in Maps, pp. 46-7; Tooley, America, p. 291, #26a, fourth state.

Sidste blad i bd. 8 repareret for småhuller. Enkelte plancher løse. 8 kobberstukne titelvignetter.

EDEN: OR, A COMPLEAT BODY OF GARDENING

printed for T. Osborne; T. Trye; S. Crowder and Co.; and H. Woodgate London: printed for T. Osborne; T. Trye; S. Crowder and Co.; and H. Woodgate, 1757. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. 410 x 260 mm (16 1/8 x 10 1/4"). iv, ii, 714 pp. FIRST EDITION. Once very handsome and still quite appealing contemporary red morocco, covers with wide gilt frame of botanical tools in a repeating pattern, very expertly rebacked using the original spine compartments, raised bands, spine richly gilt with many charming floral and ornithological tools, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (small repair to lower cover at the time of binding). WITH allegorical frontispiece and 60 ENGRAVED PLATES OF FLOWERS, ALL BEAUTIFULLY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Henrey III, 776; Hunt II, 559; Nissen BBI 880; Dunthorne 129; Great Flower Books, p. 100; Henrey III, 805; Hunt II, 559; Johnston Cleveland Collections 442; Oak Spring Flora 53; Plesch 312. Spine a bit darkened, joints slightly rubbed and flaked, small scratches and abrasions to covers, but the expertly restored binding solid and generally pleasing. Isolated faint offsetting from plates, other trivial imperfections, but A FINE COPY INTERNALLY, the leaves clean and fresh, and the plates both richly and expertly colored. This oversized, profusely illustrated botanical work is a volume of considerable beauty and is of interest to us today for its impressive plates, but it was published originally as a weekly guide (and issued in weekly parts) offering information on plants that would be blooming, fruiting, or needing the gardener's attention in the following seven days. The needs of the flower garden, greenhouse and nursery, fruit garden, and kitchen garden are individually addressed. Each part is accompanied by an engraved plate depicting six or more plant specimens, the vast majority of them beautiful blossoms. As it was intended as a companion to "The Compleat Body of Husbandry" (London, 1756) by Thomas Hale, it lists that obscure gentleman's papers as the source for the contents here. But the true author was apparently the apothecary, botanist, and sometime actor John Hill (1716?-75). Although an autodidact in the field of natural science, he became acquainted with noted members of the Royal Society, including Martin Folkes, Sir Hans Sloane, Henry Baker, William Watson, and James Parsons, and acquired Lord Bute as a patron. With Bute's assistance, he published a number of significant works on plants and their uses, among them "The British Herbal" (1755), "Flora Britanica" (1759), and his magnum opus, the 26-volume "The Vegetable System." Hill was a man of great energy and intelligence, but he was also a flamboyant character who did not hesitate to air his sometimes outrageous opinions. In addition to his scholarly writings, he published a steady series of usually abusive periodicals; he was also constantly scheming to make money and to raise his reputation above its rightful altitude; and he was always embroiled in controversies because of his ungovernable proclivity toward impertinence and derision as well as his overweening vanity. He made many confirmed enemies in important circles, a fact that thwarted his advancement. But DNB says that "his reputation has been somewhat reclaimed since. At the end of the millennium, Hill was recognized as less of a quack and dilettante, and, to use George Rousseau's phrase, more 'a type of Renaissance man in the eighteenth century.'" This is an attractive book in its uncolored state and much more so when found--as here--with engravings that have been carefully painted by an expert hand using rich and convincing colors. Such copies, especially in well-preserved condition, are seldom seen for sale.

Travels in Egypt and Nubia ... Translated from the original published by command of his Majesty the King of Denmark and enlarged with observations from ancient and modern authors, that have written on the antiquities of Egypt, by Dr. Peter Templeman

London: Lockyer Davis and Charles Reymers, 1757. 2 volumes, folio. (18 x 11 inches). [12], xxxiv, 124; [4], viii, 156pp. Half-titles. Engraved initials, head- and tail-pieces. Engraved allegorical frontispiece in vol. 1, engraved portrait of the author in vol. 2, 157 engraved plates, maps and plans (numbered I-CLIX, with plates CXL/CXLI and CXLII/CXLIII on two sheets, 5 folding). Period speckled calf, covers with a gilt roll tool border, spines with raised bands in seven compartments, red and green morocco lettering pieces in the second and third, the others with repeat overall elaborate tooling in gilt. First edition in English of an important early illustrated account of exploration in Egypt. Norden, a Captain in the Danish Navy, made a journey in 1737-1738 through Egypt as far south as Sudan at the request of King Christian VI of Denmark. "After touring Alexandria and Cairo he proceeded up the Nile as far as Derr in Nubia, one night unknowingly passing Richard Pococke travelling in the opposite direction. Norden then retraced his steps to Alexandria and re- embarked for Europe in May 1738. During his year in Egypt, Norden produced the first coherent maps of the country ... He died in Paris in September 1742, but his friends organized his papers on Egypt and published them in two volumes in French at Copenhagen in 1752-55" (Howgego). The present first English edition followed in 1757. He "was the first European to penetrate as far as Derr in Nubia and to publish descriptions of any Nubian temples. This important work was the earliest attempt at an elaborate description of Egypt, and its plates are the most significant previous to those by Denon" (Blackmer). This copy with provenance to architect Abraham Roumieu, a pupil of architect Isaac Ware.         Memoirs of Wool, Woolen Manufacture, and Trade

(Particularly in England), from the Earliest to the Present Times; with Occasional Notes, Dissertations and Reflections.. Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged, 2 volumes xxxi, 5, 432; 449, 1pp royal quarto, a fine copy in contemporary half, marbled boards, expertly rebacked with the original leather labels retained, spines with elaborate gilt roll tooling, London, the author, 1757-1756. Goldsmith 923; Kress 5576. This is the best edition of this classic work on the subject. It was first published in a far briefer form in two octavo volumes in 1747 as Chronicon Rusticum Commerciale; or Memoirs of Wool, and is a masterly source book for the whole subject of the wool trade - arguably the key trade of the period. Williams (II, p.123) thought it 'very valuable'; McCulloch (p.237) described it as 'one of the most carefully compiled and valuable works that has been published on the history of any branch of trade', whilst Palgrave (vol III, p.425) describes the books as 'a highly valuable work.. a most careful and detailed account of the incidents and references relating to the woollen and cloth trade from the earliest mention of wool until the middle of the 18th century.' The author selects and collects together extensive extracts on his subject from original works by virtually every authority writing on economics and trade. These writers include Huet, Wheeler, Diggs, Misselden, Malynes, Robinson, Fotrey, Mun, Child, Petty, Manly, Yarranton, Davenant, Tryon, Cary, Gee, Postlethwayt, &c., &c. To these pieces are added the various relevant statutes, historical and background notices. A copy of the shorter octavo edition of this work was in Adam Smith's library - see Bonar, Catalogue of Adam Smith's Library, p.175. Adam Smith quotes the work in his Wealth of Nations, describing the author as 'very accurate and intelligent' (vol II, p.150 Cannan's edition, 1930, also vol I, p.230).         An english and swedish dictionary: wherein the generality of words and various significations are rendered into swedish and latin, forms of speech, proverbs and terms of art in husbandry and gardening especially, observed, above 2400 english words traced from their true original gothick, and the mistakes of Junius, Menagius and other etymologians remarked.

Thereunto is added a large collection of terms of trade and navigation and an herbal or index of plants common to both nations. The second edition with large additions and amendments. Harg och Stenbro nära Nyköping, P. Momma, 1757. 4:o. (8),16,(634) s. Första upplagan av Serenius engelsk-svenska lexikon utkom i Hamburg 1734, denna den andra är tryckt "at Harg and Stenbro near Nykoping in Sweden" - boktryckaren Momma lät sätta upp tryckeriet nära Serenius bostad i Stenbro, då denne själv ville övervaka korrekturarbetet. Med hyllningar av A. O. Rhyzelius och E. Alstrin. Lexikonet avslutas med avdelningarna "A table of terms of trade and navigation" och "Herbale anglo svethico latinum".

Reveries or Memoirs upon the Art of War

London: J. Nourse, at the Lamb, 1757. 1st. Hard Cover. Good. First Edition in English. 4to (8 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches) full original calf, professionally rebacked, false spine bands, maroon leather spine label, gilt printing, pp. x, 195, (1) page advertisements for other books by the publisher, 40 copper plates on 34 pages. Good copy, top inch of title page trimmed without loss of text, some edge wear to binding, former owner's name inside front cover. Added some original Letters, upon various Military Subjects, wrote by the Count to the late King of Poland, and M. de Folard, which were never before made publick: Together with His Reflections upon the Propagation of the Human Species. Translated from the French. This is the first edition in English of a classic military work by one of the world's most famous soldiers. Observing that the art of war is a science with no certainties or absolutes, Saxe (1696-1750) divides his book into two parts, the first examining the raising, feeding, clothing, exercising, paying, encamping, and moving of an army and its various parts, and the second covering the sublime or strategic aspect of combat, including attack and defense in various terrains, how to interpret the signs of enemy plans, and so on. The last chapter contains the author's reflections on the propagation of the human species. overall a Very Good copy of this fairly important classic on 18th century warfare., Of noble birth, headstrong, and given to excess, Saxe served in the military from the age of 12 in various wars, including under Peter the Great against the Swedes.

Amsterdam: Covens and Mortier, c. 1757. Engraved with early outline colour. Printed on laid paper. In perfect condition. Image size: 18 1/8 x 23 1/8 inches. 18 3/4 x 23 3/8 inches. 21 7/16 x 26 inches. A handsome 18th century topographical map of Martinique This highly detailed map of Martinique delineates the hilly terrain, forests, roads, houses, and even the sugar plantations. The island was to the French what Barbados and Jamaica were to the English: immensely profitable sites for sugar production. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Jean (Johannes) Covens and Corneille (Cornelius) Mortier were brothers-in-law, who carried on the book publishing business established by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam in 1685. Pierre Mortier's company owed much of its success to his access to French publishers, whose publications he re-issued in handsome editions. The elder Mortier died in 1711; his wife continued the firm until she died in 1719. In 1721, Covens and Mortier formed a partnership, Covens having married Agatha Mortier in the same year. They continued the business by publishing enlarged editions of Sanson, Jaillot, and De L'Isle, as well as some of the later Dutch cartographical masters such as De Wit and Allard, and of course Pierre Mortier.         The Works of... in eight volumes. Collated with the oldest copies, and Corrected: With Notes, Explanatory, and Critical: by Mr. Theobald.

London: Printed for C. Hitch [et al], 1757.. Eight volumes, 12mo. Printed frontispiece and 36 plates - one per play. One gathering slightly proud in volume I with the fly title to A Midsummer Night's Dream lacking, some mostly marginal worming at the beginning and end of several volumes, marginal loss to two leaves - with only very slight loss of text in one instance, one other leaf with a closed tear, contemporary signatures to titles and the first fly title in each volume with one set crossed out. Contemporary dappled calf, gilt spines with orange labels, some very light wear to extremities, minor loss to foot of one spine otherwise a handsome set. Theobald's "Shakespeare Restored" appeared in 1726, correcting Pope's edition of the previous year. It provoked much controversy - Pope appropriated most of Theobald's work in his second edition and later attacked him in his "Dunciad". Theobald's own edition of Shakespeare was first published in 1733 and remains a valuable work - "It would not be too much to say that the text of Shakespeare owes more to Theobald than to any other editor. Many desperate corruptions were rectified by him, and in the union of learning, critical acumen, tact, and good sense he has perhaps no equal among Shakespearean commentators" (DNB). Jaggard p501. A second edition of Theobald appeared in 1740 with another issue in 1752 before this one. Jaggard notes no major differences between this set and the 1740 second edition except for the addition of Shakespeare's will to the first volume, which had been included in the 1752 edition for the first time.

A Prospect on the River Manyfold, at Wetton-Mill [Pl. 3]

London: Published by Smith, July 29, 1757. Engraving with beautiful hand- colour. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In good condition with the exception of some staining in the margins. Two creases along bottom corners. Label on verso of sheet. Image size: 15 x 20 7/8 inches. 15 1/2 x 21 3/4 inches. 15 3/4 x 22 inches. A stunning view of the River Manyfold, by Smith of Derby, one of the most celebrated English landscape painters. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. One of the earliest and most influential landscape artists to begin this trend was Thomas Smith who came to be known as "Smith of Derby". Smith traveled the north of England painting famous houses and beautiful views. He was one of the first artists to depict wild landscape scenes, which became immensely fashionable with the development of the "picturesque landscape" towards the end of the century. Smith's paintings not only captured the English countryside at the onset of the Industrial Revolution, but also recorded the activities of visiting tourists and local inhabitants. These works capture a period in England's history, which was forever changed by the wheels of progress. Before the mills and the factories came to dominate the landscape of northern England Smith depicted its wild beauty and breathtaking scenery. This lovely print comes from a suite of eight views of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, produced by Smith around 1743. The views were then engraved and offered for sale by subscription, along with letterpress explanations of the sites. This important suite represent the first appearance of precipes and cascades in English landscapes, and mark a pivotal point in the concept of the countryside as sublime. The set was republished twice, first by Smith in 1757 and later by Boydell in 1769. This print is from Smith's second edition. Wetton Mill in the distance was a river run mill for grinding corn. River Manyfold (now Manifold) appears well-named as it forms a large loop before the viewer. Wetton is in Staffordshire. Clayton The English Print 1688-1802 page 155-157, 299.
