Le Fils Naturel, Ou Les Preuves De La Vertu, Comédie En Cinq Actes, Et En Prose.

S.n. [Prault Fils] 1757 - - S.n. [Prault Fils], A Amsterdam [Paris] 1757, In 8 (12x20cm), jx (1) 11-299p., relié. - Edition originale, rare. Tchemerzine IV, 447. Pleine Basane marbrée d'époque. Dos lisse orné. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge. Coiffes élimées. Un coin émoussé. Assez bon exemplaire. Poems on Several Occasions, Formerly Written. The Second Edition, With Additions of later Pieces; and an historical and critieal [sic] Account of the Origin and peculiar Nature of English Poetry, in a Letter to a Member of Parliament.

London: Printed by E. Owen. An Sold by T. Osborned. R. and J. Dodsley. J. Rivington. 1757 - 12mo, 165 x 100 mms., pp. x, 165 [166 adverts], including list of subscribers, recently rebound in boards, with paper label on spine and front cover. A very good copy. Free is described on the title-page as "Vicar of East Coker., Lecturer of St. Mary-Hill, London, and Lecturer of Newington in Surrey." The book was first published in 1751 as Poems, and Miscellaneous Pieces formerly Written by John Free. The reviewer in The Monthly Review for 1758 observed, "This work, of which we do not recollect any former entire edition.is a miscellany on very different subjects, and executed with different success. The verses to the fair sex, from the Greek of Naumachius, and a few others are not bad; many are entitled to the character of mediocrity; and others undoubtedly fall short of it. [W]e may fairly assure our Readers there is as great a variety for the price, under almost every poetical denomination, as could well be contained in about 200 pages. [T]hough we do not consider him among the humblest versifiers, we conceive he will be prudent in sitting down contented in a moderate station among the minor poets; and compensate himself for any deficiency that way, by the solid reputation he enjoys, of being a truly well principled Englishman, and a very good natured man." ESTC N12098 locates copies in Bodleian, Oxford Christ Church, John Rylands in these islands; and Harvard, McMaster, Newberry, Northwestern, Stanford, Library of Congress, Chicago, and Illinois in north America. Copac adds BL and several other British locations. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The History of the Province of New-York, from the First Discovery to the Year 1732.

1757 - Expertly bound to style in half 18th century calf, over 18th century marble paper boards, spine simply gilt in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece. One of the very rare large paper issues of the first edition of the first history of New York. William Smith was a graduate of Yale, became a distinguished New York lawyer, and later justice of the province. He was involved in a number of major land litigation cases in colonial New York, and it is likely that because of this he and Holland would have become closely acquainted. A Loyalist during the Revolution, Smith moved to Canada upon its conclusion and there became a chief justice as well. This history covers the period up to 1736. An important early history of New York. Howes rates the large paper edition a "d." This is only the second large paper copy of the work we have encountered.         Travels, or Observations Relating to Several Parts of Barbary and the Levant. lllustrated with Cuts.

London: Printed for A. Millar and W. Sandby:, Second edition with great Improvements, 1757 - 4to, 2 parts in 1, xviii, [2], 513, [1]pp, 38 engraved plates, including 15 maps (9 folding0, and 22 woodcut illustrations (2 folding), as per list, two plates with minor neat repairs to verso, contemp. full calf with later neat reback with raised bands, lettered and gilt ruled spine, rubbed along some extremities. A VG+ generally clean copy. Thomas Shaw was Chaplain to the English factory at Algiers and used his clerical position as an occasion for several travels. The first edition of this work was published in 1738, and was criticized by a certain Dr. Richard Pocock, and in defence, Shaw wrote a supplement, the contents of which are interwoven in the present text. Shaw's aim was to restore the ancient geography of the regions he describes and to place the natural and civil history of such areas in a proper light. Shaw is well known in the field of botany for his catalogue of the rarer plants which he observed during his travels in Barbary, Egypt, and Arabia, a classification amounting to 632 species and including crude plates, all donated to and preserved by Oxford University under the name of Shawia. This is the last edition prepared by Shaw himself. "These Travels have been universally esteemed, not only for their accuracy and fidelity, but on account of the illustrations they contain of natural history, of the classic authors, and especially of the Scriptures" (Lowndes 2372-3); "For his time, his geological views are enlightened, while his conjectures on the subject of the pyramids have been fully confirmed by Belzoni and other investigators; his scrupulous fidelity was vindicated by James Bruce and by later African explorers." His studies of minerals substances enhanced the understanding of various metals and compounds, the results of his many experiments heating substances in a furnace were published in his Lithogeognosia of 1746, his detailed tables of results were invaluable to the development of mineral chemistry.         Abhandlungen zur Naturgeschichte der Thiere und Pflanzen; welche ehemals der königl.

      - franz. Akad. der Wissenschaften vorgetragen worden; . Aus dem Französischen übersetzet. Leipzig, Arkstee und Merkus, 1757-1758. 3 volumes. 4to. pp. xxvi, (40), 1100, with 1 engraved frontispiece, 3 printer's-marks and 137 (mostly folded) engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, richly floral gilt spines with 6 raised bands and gilt-lettered labels. Nissen 3128; cf. Pritzel 2341. Dealing mainly with the natural history of animals, only the second half of the third volume treats plants. The animal dissections were done by the famous French anatomist and physician Claude Perrault, who was the leader of the famous French anatomists, of which Cole (p. 395) said: "The Parisians laid the foundation of our knowledge of comparative anatomy". Perrault (1613-1688; working in the fields of zoology, medicine, and plant- & animal-physiology) was "an original and influential figure. Few of his predecessors described so many species in such detail, or with such clarity and precision ." (D.S.B. X, pp. 519-521). The beautifully engraved frontispiece shows Louis XIV and his Chancellor Colbert visiting the French Academy of Sciences in 1671. Many of the very attractive plates show animals in front of a beautiful and detailed landscape with villages, rivers, etc. and were printed on strong paper. Pages 81 to 94 concern camels and describe the anatomy of 2 camels 'Anatomische Beschreibung zweier Kameele', the text is accompanied by three plates. The first plate is a dromedary and the second a camel, both in front of a lovely landscape, the third plate shows anatomical details of the animals. A good and clean copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Prospect of the Rocks & that Salt Cavern at Castleton call'd Peak-hole, alias the D-l's A-fe

Published by Thomas Smith, London 1757 - A stunning view of the Salt Cavern at Castleton, by Smith of Derby, one of the most celebrated English landscape painters. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. One of the earliest and most influential landscape artists to begin this trend was Thomas Smith who came to be known as "Smith of Derby". Smith traveled the north of England painting famous houses and beautiful views. He was one of the first artists to depict wild landscape scenes, which became immensely fashionable with the development of the "picturesque landscape" towards the end of the century. Smith's paintings not only captured the English countryside at the onset of the Industrial Revolution, but also recorded the activities of visiting tourists and local inhabitants. These works capture a period in England's history, which was forever changed by the wheels of progress. Before the mills and the factories came to dominate the landscape of northern England Smith depicted its wild beauty and breathtaking scenery. This beautiful set is a wonderful example of Smith's superior work. This lovely print comes from a suite of eight views of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, produced by Smith around 1743. The views were then engraved and offered for sale by subscription, along with letterpress explanations of the sites. This important suite represent the first appearance of precipes and cascades in English landscapes, and mark a pivotal point in the concept of the countryside as sublime. The set was republished twice, first by Smith in 1757 and later by Boydell in 1769. In this view of one of the caverns near Castleton, generally known now and spelled out: "Devil's Arse", Smith explores another of the fascinating natural wonders of Derbyshire. Clayton The English Print 1688-1802 page 155-157, 299. Engraving with beautiful hand-colour. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In good condition with the exception of some staining on the right margin and across the top edge of sheet outside of platemark. Label on verso of sheet. Image size: 15 1/8 x 20 3/4 inches.

        Le Decameron de Jean Bocacce

[i.e. Paris, Prault], Londres 1757 - Five volumes, Octavo. Profusely illustrated by Hubert Francois Gravelot, Cochin, Boucher and Eisen with full page plates and tail pieces, engraved by Aliamet, Baquoy, Flipart, Legrand, Lemire, Lempereur, and others. The full page engravings in vols. I, !! and IV bear the "paraphe" indicating proof impressions. With the bookplate of noted book collector Mary MacMillin Norton. Provenance: sold at Hotel Drouot in 1908. The first volume also contains "Vie de Jean Bocace, poete Florentin" (Life of the Florentine poet Jean Bocaccio) by Philippe-Matthieu Villani. The Tales of the Decameron were originally published in 1351 or 1353. The story has stories within the story; seven young women and three young men flee the Black Plague in Florence and stay at a villa in Fiesole, they tell stories to each over a period of fourteen days, except for the days of work and rest, so ten stories each day for ten days. In the stories Bocaccio is considered to have given himself the voice of Dioneo, who can choose to talk about any topic in his story. The stories deal with lust and greed, the clergy's especially; love stories between members of different societal classes, the wealthy merchants dealings with noble personage, tricks that people play on each other and similar topics. The illustrator, Hubert-Franois Gravelot, was a French engraver (1699, Paris - 1773) who also did illustrations and was an occasional figurative painter. He trained in Paris under Francois Boucher and later departed for London around 1732. There he became friends with William Hogarth and both of them taught at the St, Martin's Lane Academy (a precursor to the Royal Academy). One of his students was Thomas Gainsborough. He illustrated Gay's "Fables", and was one of the first artists to illustrate Richardson's "Pamela" and Fielding's "Tom Jones." Perhaps his most well known work of illustration is the "Decameron." Although other artists provided illustrations for the Decameron Gravelot created 89 of the 111 plates, and all 97 of the tailpieces. Bocaccio's stories and Gravelot's temparement were well suited to each other; he also found his way to depict the society around him by transposing Bocaccio's characters to the France of his [Gravelot] day. The plates in these volumes are first proofs of the illustrations and each one bears the monogram stamp in ink on the verso. [Cohen-de Ricci 160-1; Ray 39-4. No. 14 in "Choice and Unusual Books and Manuscripts. The collection of Mary McMillin Norton". Anderson Galleries, 1918] Some slight rubbing to covers, very slight occasional browning and foxing throughout (not affecting plates) full ox-blood red morocco, spines with raised bands and extra gilt, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Volume III very skillfully rebound to match quite some time ago, most likely late 1800s (no trimming of pages) The most sought after edition.         Mes Rêveries

Amsterdam and Leipzig, Arkstrée et Merkus; Paris, Desaint and Saillant, Durand, , 1757. Ouvrage Posthume... Augmenté d'une Histoire abrégée de sa Vie, & de Différentes Pièces qui y ont Repport. Par Monsieur l'Abbé Pérau. 2 volumes, quarto (280 × 210 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with floral and foliate tools, red morocco title piece, green stained and gilt "numbering piece", gilt barred edge-roll, green silk page-markers, edges sprinkled in red. 84 plates, 37 of them folding, 4 of them coloured, wood-engraved head- and tailpieces. Some light browning, one plate slightly misfolded and standing proud at the fore-edge, some light shelf-wear, corners a little soft, head- and tailcaps scuffed, but overall a very good set. First edition thus. "De Saxe's work is a comprehensive treatise on war. He puts forward his ideal military model, his "legion", and taking issue with the views and practices of his age, he advances many original ideas. However, rather than discussing his military doctrines, the aim of this book is to elucidate the intellectual premises that dominated his mind: he saw a need to subject military affairs to reasoned criticism and intellectual treatment, and the ensuing military doctrines were perceived as forming a definitive system." [Gat The Origins of Military Thought, p.33] Carlyle described it as a "strange military farrago, dictated, as I should think, under opium", which is perhaps not entirely as unfair as it may seem, a note on the original MS at Dresden reads, "I composed this work in Thirteen nights: I was ill, therefore, it may perhaps bear marks of the fever which I had. This ought to excuse the regularity of the arrangement, as also the elegance of style. I wrote in a military manner and to kill time." Whatever the oddness of its style the Reveries... was immensely influential, reprinted three times in 1757 and again in 1761 and 1763, German editions of 1757 and 1767 and English of 1757, 1759 and 1776. The Macclesfield copies with the Shirburn Castle blind stamp through the prelims. and bookplates to the front endpapers, that on the pastedowns being that of Lieutenant-General George Lane Parker, younger son of the Second Earl, who served for more than twenty years in the 1st Foot Guards. In 1773 at rank of Major-General he was appointed Colonel of the 20th Foot and saw service in the War of Independence. One of his contributions to the Shirburn Castle Library was a remarkable collection of books detailing the professional interests of a soldier in the latter part of the C18th. A handsome and well-provenanced set of this important work.

Cioranescu 25628. Travels, or Observations relating to several parts of Barbary and the Levant. Illustrated with cuts. Second Edition, with great Improvement

Printed for A. Millar and W. Sandby, London, England 1757 - All 38 engraved plates, including 15 maps (9 folding) and 22 woodcut illustrations (2 folding) , as listed on the page entitled "Plates contained in this work," are here. Newly guarded, sewen and bound by a master book binder. xviii, [2], 513, [1, list of plates] pp. Thomas Shaw (1692 or 1694 - 1751) graduated as MA from Oxford in 1720 and a year later was appointed Chaplain to the English factory at Algiers where he served from 1722 to 1733. He used his clerical position to travel and visited Egypt, Sinai, Cyprus, the Holy Land, Tunis and Carthage, as well as making various excursions into the interior of the Barbary states, Algiers, Tripoli, and Morocco. There is a great deal of material on Tunis and Algeria. The best description of North Africa of the period. A section on Lebanon is included in the description of the Levant. More than 640 species of plants are described. There is also a list of the rarer plants of Barbary, Egypt and Arabia. The plates include natural history, botany, animals, antiquities. "In Barbary travel he was comparatively safe, but in 'Aqabah he was stripped naked by robbers, and while travelling with 6000 pilgrims to Jerusalem he was seized and held to ransom. However, with 'a body capable of bearing the fatigues of travelling united to a mind rich in most kinds of human learning.'" (ODNB). Throughout all of his travels he was a meticulous observer, carefully recording geography, natural history, customs, and antiquities. He returned to England in 1733 published the first edition, engaged the botanist Johann Jakob Dillenius to catalogue his flora. The first edition of this work was published in 1738, and was criticized by a certain Dr. Richard Pocock, and in defense, Shaw wrote a supplement, the contents of which are interwoven in the present text. "These Travels have been universally esteemed, not only for their accuracy and fidelity, but on account of the illustrations they contain of natural history, of the classic authors, and especially of the Scriptures" (Lowndes 2372-3); "For his time, his geological views are enlightened, while his conjectures on the subject of the pyramids have been fully confirmed by Belzoni and other investigators; his scrupulous fidelity was vindicated by James Bruce and by later African explorers." (DNB Cox I, 377; Weber 498. Blackmer Sale 307: "His work is valuable for its accurate descriptions of antiquities, geography & natural history he observed". Gibbon praised him and excepts him from the crowed of "blind" travelers.' His scrupulous fidelity was vindicated by James Bruce and by later African explorers. . . a noble example of typography' (D.N.B., vol 17, p 1384). Shaw presented his collection of specimens, ancient medals and busts to Oxford, where he was appointed principal of St. Edmund Hall, and held the chair of regius professor of Greek until his death in 1751. Lowndes 2372: 'These Travels have been universally esteemed, not only for their accuracy and fidelity, but on account of the illustrations they contain of natural history, of the classic authors, and especially of the Scriptures.' A handsomely printed work, the best description of North Africa of the period. The author visited Egypt, Sinai, Palestine, Cyprus and most of North Africa, and provides much material on Tunis and Algeria. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD BY WAY OF THE GREAT SOUTH SEA: PERFORMED IN A PRIVATE EXPEDITION DURING THE WAR, WHICH BROKE OUT WITH SPAIN, IN THE YEAR 1718.

London. 1757. - [6],iii,[3],476pp. plus folding map and four engraved plates (two folding). Contemporary speckled calf, gilt. Some scuffing and wear to boards and hinge, corners lightly worn. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Minor scattered soiling and foxing. A nice copy in unsophisticated condition. Very good. The third and best edition (styled "second edition, with additions" on the title), after the first of 1726. Shelvocke was engaged in a privateering expedition against Spanish shipping on the Pacific coast of America. He sailed as far north as Baja California, and two of the plates depict men and women of that peninsula. He also reported gold in the region. A storm had separated Shelvocke's ship from the accompanying vessel on the expedition, and Shelvocke did not wait for the captain of that ship at the agreed locations in the Canaries and Juan Fernandez. Instead, he sailed for Brazil and then to the west coast of South America, including stops at Payta, Peru, and Lower California. Two of the plates are notable for their depictions of California natives. Shelvocke returned home via Guam and Macao. Upon his return to England, Shelvocke was accused of piracy and taken prisoner. Betagh, in the preface to his book on the same expedition, describes Shelvocke's book as "entirely a deception, and his whole conduct a disgrace to his country." Hill notes that "this second [actually third] edition is superior to that of the first edition of 1726. It was edited by Shelvocke's son, who corrected the text extensively in a further effort to vindicate his father from charges of piracy and embezzlement." The folding map depicts Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, with the route of the voyage traced. "The whole history of this expedition is a curious commentary upon the morals of the times. The English had passed out of the freebooting stage, strictly speaking, and were now eager to cover their privateering exploits with a little more clothing than in the preceding century" - Wagner. An important English Pacific voyage. HILL 1558. HOWES S383, "aa." COWAN, pp.581-82. WAGNER SPANISH SOUTHWEST 88. BORBA DE MORAES, p.796. SABIN 80159. BARRETT 2261 (note).

A REVIEW OF THE MILITARY OPERATIONS IN NORTH AMERICA; FROM THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE FRENCH HOSTILITIES ON THE FRONTIERS OF VIRGINIA IN 1753, TO THE SURRENDER OF OSWEGO, ON THE 14th OF AUGUST, 1756.

Dublin. 1757. - 276pp. 20th-century red morocco, gilt, a.e.g., by Riviere & Son. One corner lightly worn; bookplate on front pastedown. Internally clean. Near fine. In a red half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. First Dublin edition of this important work, after the first London of the same year, which is among the prime authorities for the Lake George campaign of 1755. This Dublin edition is expanded slightly, including George Washington's journal of his 1754 expedition in Ohio. Largely a vindication of Major Gen. William Shirley's conduct during his service as commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America during the Seven Years' War, for which he was charged with neglect of duty, reviewing the progress of the war in Virginia and the northern colonies, including Washington's capitulation at Fort Necessity and Braddock's defeat at Monongahela. Shirley was replaced by Lord Loudon as commander-in- chief. The following year Loudon, placing the blame for the loss of Oswego squarely on Shirley's shoulders, dismissed him from military office and removed him from the governorship of Massachusetts. It has been suggested that New York historian William Smith may have had a hand in the preparation of this work. ESTC N12681. HOWES L401, "aa."
