Large 4to, cont. mottled calf (a few careful repairs to upper joint & corners), triple gilt fillet round sides, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. The Hague: P. de Hondt, 1756. First edition in French (1st ed., in English: 1755); this is one of the few copies which has fine and delicate contemporary coloring. Ellis (ca. 1710-76), whom Linnaeus termed a "bright star of natural history" and "the main support of natural history in England," was one of the earliest marine zoologists. With the Swede Daniel Solander (1733-1782), he discovered that sponges are animals. "Ellis's zoophyte descriptions and professionally drawn engravings, and his scientific approach, were outstanding. His two longest books, Natural History of the Corallines...and the posthumous Natural History of Zoophytes (1786, partly written by Solander), were seminal. In the 1750s he was one of the British Museum's first noteworthy scientific visitors. He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1754 and was its Copley medallist in 1767."-ODNB. The final plate depicts Cuff's aquatic microscope. See Clay & Court, History of the Microscope, pp. 66-68. A very attractive copy. .

8vo., 112pp., with a whole-page figure on p.105, bound in 19th century German half calf over mottled boards, spine gilt, labelled and lettered. A fine copy. The world's first bio-bibliography of earthquakes and seismology. Christoph Gottlob Grundig (born September 5, 1707; died August 9, 1780) was a German Protestant theologian, mineralogist and publicist. His interest in mineralogy had been nurtured when he was at school in Freiberg under Bergrat Johann Friedrich Henckel. From 1737 he held the post of evangelical pastor in Hermann village where he married and raised a family. From 1747 he edited a monthly magazine on the natural history and art history of Upper Saxony. Following his move to become senior pastor at Schneeberg in 1749, and following the dramatic Lisbon earthquake of 1755, Grundig gained particular credit for this, the world's first seismological bibliography. When he died in August 1780 his estate included a large library and a comprehensive collection of some 3300 specimens of minerals.

      - Poema Epico-Polemico; que A? SANTIDADE DO PAPA BENEDICTO XIV. DEDICA FRANCISCO DE PINA E DE MELLO, Moço Fidalgo da Casa de Sua Magestade, e Academico da Academia Real da Historia Portugueza. COIMBRA: Na Officina de ANTONIO SIMOENS FERREYRA, Impressor da Universidade, Anno de 1756. In 8º (20,5x14,5 cm) com [24], lv, [i], 331 pags. Five engraved plates (one a map, several folding). First edition of this monumental but unfinished description of the most notable antiquities (including runes, etc.), buildings, and topographical features of Denmark. Thurah (1706-59), following his retirement about 1750, planned a great survey of Denmark but died before he could finish. These volumes, all that were published of the survey, are concerned with the Danish islands Bornholm, Christiansoe, Amager, Saltholm, and Samsoe. Thurah was "the most significant representative of late baroque architecture in Denmark...after cadet studies in Copenhagen, he received instruction as an officer and military engineer in 1725-1727, studies that also embraced architectural training. Travels to Germany Italy, France, Holland and England further broadened his horizons. Shortly after his return to Denmark, he received the appointment of royal architect and went on to enjoy a distinguished and prolific architectural career."-Beasley et al., Millard Architectural Collection, Volume III, Northern European Books, pp. 38-39. An uncommonly fine copy in a most handsome "mirror" binding which was a popular style in Denmark in the 18th century. The folding map in the second volume has a tear carefully repaired.         British education: or, the source of the disorders of Great Britain. Being an essay towards proving, that the immorality, ignorance, and false taste, which so generally prevail, are the natural and necessary consequences of the present defective system of education. With an attempt to shew, that a revival of the art of speaking, and the study of our own language, might contribute, in a great measure, to the cure of those evils. In three parts. I. Of the use of these studies to religion, and morality; as also, to the support of the British constitution. II. Their absolute necessity in order to refine, ascertain, and fix the English language. III. their use in the cultivation of the imitative arts: shewing, that were the study of oratory made a necessary branch of the education of youth; poetry, musick, painting, and sculpture, might arrive at as high a pitch of perfection in England, as ever they did in Athens or Rome.

London: R., and J. Dodsley, 1756. 8vo., xl + 536pp., endpapers foxed, title and final leaf a little browned, contemporary calf, professionally rebacked to match, spine with raised bands and gilt lines, the old label re-used. A good copy with the late 18th or early 19th century armorial bookplate of the Kerr family, with Mary Kerr's signature, dated 1800, >at head of title. First edition. Alston X, 221. 'A treatise of fundamental importance for the history of English studies and the teaching of English, discussing all aspects of language-study, including grammar, rhetoric and elocution'. [Alston] Thomas Sheridan's father had, it is said, always wanted his son to be a school master as he was. But much of the younger Thomas Sheridan's life - until he was approaching 40 - was spent acting or theatre managing in Dublin and London. The latter part of his life was devoted to teaching and lecturing on elocution. He fell out with Samuel Johnson over pensions, Johnson finally damning Sheridan as 'dull, naturally dull'.

1756. A Group of Prominent New York City Lawyers Establish a Price-Fixing Cartel [Lawyers]. [New York City]. "Articles of Agreement to Establish a Quarterly Meeting of the Attornies [sic] in the City of New York and for Setting the Sum to be Received by Them for All Business in the Profession" [Running Title]. New York, November 26, 1756. 12" x 7-1/4" leaf, text on recto, some signatures on verso. Light browning and moderate edgewear, careful recent repairs to tears. * In this 1756 document, 15 New York lawyers agree to meet regularly and appoint "a Committee for drawing a plan" for uniform fees and regulations. This was certainly a precursor to formal bar associations, which were not established until the late nineteenth century. James Duane, is named the first clerk of what is, in effect, a cartel of New York lawyers. It is signed by James Duane (mayor of New York, 1784-1789), William Livingston (signer of United States Constitution), William Smith, Jr. (author of the 1756 History of the Province of New-York and co-compiler with Livingston of The Laws of New York), John V. Cortlandt, Richard Morris, Benjamin Kissam, Whitehead Hicks (mayor of New York, 1766-1776), and eight others. The ability of lawyers to set fixed fees remained in force for over two centuries until declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1975's Goldfarb v. Virginia State Bar.       London: T. Osborne and J. Shipton; J. Hodges; L. Davis; J. Ward; R. Baldwin 1756 - FIRST EDITION. Folio (40 x 25 cm.) pp.[xvii]+748+[iv]. Contemporary calf, rebacked. Title and frontispiece lightly soiled, R2 with small hole just affecting one or two letters, plate 37 with tear into image neatly repaired, some intermittent light spotting and browning throughout. Boards worn, contents generally very good. Title-page in red and black. Frontispiece, vignette on title, 114 engraved plates 14 of which are folding or double-page. Plus an additional plate 13. FIRST STATE OF THE PLATES, with the vignette of the Pantheon on title and plate numbers within the plate-line, also with plates 70/71 reading "Warwick Shire." Neither Fowler nor RNLI call for a bis plate13. The two plates show reverse views of the same building elevation, one signed 'I. Ware sculp.,' the other 'Darly & Edwds fec'. "The contents in fact do not encompass "the whole science of architecture". Instread they accommodate three important and fundamental objectives: Ware's desire to elucidate architectural principles based on the practices of the "Ancients", thus avoiding the "violent liberties" taken by modern architects; his wish to develop a general system of architectural proportion based on the proportions of the orders, and to develop a general system of architectural proportion based on the proportions of the orders; and his interest in the principles and practice of domestic architecture, almost to the exclusion of all other building types. Ware thus implicitly supported two principal components of Colen Campbell's program of architectural reform set out over 40 years earlier in Vitruvius Britannicus: restoration of "Ancient" authority, and confidence that Britain's future architectural progress lay in domestic building."         North Sea antique chart - Mount and Page.

"A Chart of Part of the North Sea from the South Foreland to Burnham Flatts, and from Callis Schelling Isle"'Copper engraving from "The English Pilot Describing The Sea-Coasts, Capes, Head-Lands, Soundings, Sands, Shoals, Rocks and Dangers, The Bays, Roads, Harbours, Rivers and Ports in the Whole Northern Navigation"' published by W. and J. Mount, T. Page and Sons, London 1756. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 44 x 54 cm. The English Pilot was an important British sea-atlas published from 1671 to 1803. Initially published by John Seller, publication of the atlas changed hands periodically, with other publishers including Charles Price, John Thornton, and the Mount & Page firm. The charts from the English Pilot were intended as working charts so there was an effort to make them accurate, although predictably, many seamen complained that the charts were consistently out of date and that changes were slow to appear, a charge leveled at virtually every British, French and American Chart maker, including the respective governments of these nations. Ironically, it was in no small part due to the proprietary nature of the information included in the maps and sailing directions that there was a tendency for commercial pilots to pass the information from mariner to chart-maker more slowly than might otherwise have been the case, although the chart makers on the Thames and otherwise were undoubtedly reluctant to immediately make each and every necessary correction, for fear of undermining the economic viability of their businesses.

(Avertissement). Cohen, The French translation of Isaac Newton's Philosophiae., Archives internationales des sciences 21, 1968. ___ First and sole French translation of Newton's "Principia". First issue. One of the very rare copies with both titles dated 1756, about 12 copies are known with this title page. This 1756 edition was presumably issued in a very small number of copies and then quickly withdrawn on account of its imperfections. The Cotes preface is present. Second state of the "Avertissement". "Known throughout intellectual Europe as Emilie, the name popularized by Voltaire, Mme du Châtelet - beyond the influence she had for some fifteen years on the orientation of Voltaire's works and on his public activity - contributed to the vitality of French scientific life to the parallel diffusion of Newtonianism and Leibnizian epistemology. Her affairs entertained the faishionable world of her period, yet her last moments revealed the sincerity of her scientific vocation. Although she limited her efforts to commentary and synthesis, her work contributed to the great progress made by Newtonian science in the middle of the eighteenth century". DSB 3, 215- 217. ______ Format : 2 volumes in-4. [248 x 192 mm] Collation : (4), XXXIX, (5), 437 pp., 9 planches. / (4), IV, 180, 297, (2) pp., 5 planches.

Besitzeintrag. Ohne die fliegenden Vorsätze. – Goed. IV 1, 488, 7, 5; Mendelssohn-Kat. Wolfenbüttel Nr 24. [Attributes: First Edition]

» (Lichtenberger). Bon exemplaire. Petites galeries de ver marginales.
