Maria Josepha of Austria (Maria Josepha Benedikta Antonia Theresia Xaveria Philippine) was the Queen of Poland by marriage to Augustus III (1696-1763). The archduchess of Austria, eldest daughter of Emperor Joseph I, married in 1719 the Elector Frederick August II of Saxony, elected King of Poland in 1733 under the name of August III (1696-1763). From 1711 to 1717, she was heir presumptive to the Habsburg Empire. Her sister Maria Amalia became Electress of Bavaria. This letter is one of her last letters, evoking the battle of Prague (May 6, 1757), won by the Prussians over the Austrians, alongside whom the Poles fought, led by her husband and her son; she will die on November 17.She said how happy she was when she received her son's letter: "I didn't even know if you are still in the world and where, after all, what he could look at you, unless what your very dear Father [Auguste III] m 'begged for W. [.] imagine my worries especially after the unfortunate Battle of 6 de Maÿ which I had the consolation of learning from the Prussians themselves that you behaved well and even a lot distinguished ". She is worried about the rumors of Field Marshal Browne's death, "It would be a dreadful and overwhelming loss for Impce R., for us here, and for you in particular." She is happy to know her son outside of Prague. She addressed her compliments to Charles of Lorraine [who escaped Frederick II and took refuge in Prague]: "It would be my greatest joy to see him here victorious over h … [Click Below for Full Description]

BURKE, Edmund & William
London: J. Dodsley, 1757. 2 volumes octavo, (195 x 118 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf trade binding, brown morocco labels with triple gilt ruled frame, raised bands, double gilt rules either side, numbered direct in gilt to the third compartment, double gilt fillet panels to the boards, foliate edge-roll in blind, edges sprinkled red. The errata neatly inked to the text in a contemporary hand. Spines a little dulled, overall slightly rubbed, a couple of small patches of insect damage on the boards, joints just starting on volume I, hinges cracked but sound, tan-burn to the endpapers, light browning, but overall a very good set. Folding engraved map frontispiece by Bowen to each volume, South America to volume I, North to volume II. First edition. Described by Howes as the "best contemporary account" and attributed by him to William Burke, an "early companion at work and play" (ODNB) of Edmund while he was studying for the bar. Edmund always referred to him as his cousin, although no blood connection has ever been traced. Sabin for his part credits the work to Edmund, and Burke's bibliographer, while noting his explanation to Boswell that he only "revised" the text, draws attention to the existence of a autograph receipt in his hand acknowledging the receipt of some 50 guineas from Dodsley for "the Copy of a book entitled An Acct." (Todd p. 29). More recent "stylometric analysis suggests that Edmund Burke contributed a history of puritanism in old and new England to the Account, but the rest was probably by William Burke" (ODNB). Works by any one of the Burkes, Edmund, his … [Click Below for Full Description]

Extremities a little rubbed, short, thin wormtrail to rear pastedown and endleaf, small hole to first two leaves at gutter, but A FINE COPY, clean and fresh internally, in an appealing binding.Aside from its substantial importance in the history of English literature, Gray's "Odes" represents a signal event in the history of private press publishing as the first work issued by Horace Walpole at his Strawberry Hill Press. Thomas Gray (1716-71) had begun to write poetry as early as 1742, but it was not until the 1751 publication of "Stanzas Wrote in a Country Church-Yard" (now called "Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard") that he gained widespread recognition for his work. Although he thought of himself primarily as a classics scholar and even refused the laureateship when it was offered to him in 1757, Gray was considered the foremost poet of his day, and his poetry is now often cited as foundational to the development of the Romantic movement. The present work consists of two Pindaric odes, the first of which ("The Progress of Poesy") Day considers to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Foudrinier e Thomas Major su disegno dell’Arch. Borra, tutte descritte. Cfr. The Mark Millard Architectural Collection”,II,93: “The text of "The ruins of Balbec" was written by Wood, with a history of the site, an account of the ‘Journey from Palmira to Balbec’, and an analysis of the inscriptions found.. LACAILLE, Nicolas-Louis, Abbé de (1713-1762)
Paris ca 1757. Folio (370 x 240 mm), ff [10], with one loose folded sheet of tables and one part–sheet of astronomical observations (see below), ink on paper, with numerous diagrams and tables, text and tables with extensive revisions and corrections; in very good condition, unbound. A detailed manuscript on perspective and optics, with extensive tables for calculating the distance of objects, probably used in Lacaille’s courses on mathematics which he taught at the Collège Mazarin in Paris. The work begins with the Théorie de la Perspective. This is followed by Pratique de la Perspective. Five full-page and detailed tables follow, with the vertical columns titled Distances de l’Object au Plan du Tableau, and the horizontal columns titled Distances de l’Object au plan Horizontal ou au plan Vertical, containing 10,000 calculations. The next section is titled Regles pour trouver La Perspective des Objets dont les faces sont inclinées au Plan du Tableau, accompanied by another extensive table with 1700 calculations. The final perspective section is titled Sur Le Point de vuë, et le Lieu de l’oeil. The second part is devoted to Newton’s theory of colours, and seems to be based upon the French edition of Brook Taylor’s work on perspective. The French translation appeared in Amsterdam in 1757 and was titled Nouveau Principes de la Perspective Linéaire, which contained Essai sur le Mêlange des Couleurs, par Newton. However, LaCaille’s text is not a translation of that of Taylor’s, and in fact a radical reworking of the basic geometric principles of perspective. The tables are uniq … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sabin for his part credits the work to Edmund, and Burke's bibliographer, while noting his explanation to Boswell that he only "revised" the text, draws attention to the existence of a autograph receipt in his hand acknowledging the receipt of some 50 guineas from Dodsley for "the Copy of a book entitled An Acct."
