Apart from travel accounts of journeys to Geneva and Venice, full of interesting details of the life in hotels including many more or less piquant stories of his encounters in these establishments, the book, like so many of the picaresque stories, includes also an excursion to Algiers. The book also provides us with information on the habits and traditions of the Moor people. Jacob de Bucquoy (b. 1693), a surveyor and cartographer for the Dutch East India Company (VOC), relates remarkable adventures, including attacks by pirates during his travels from 1720 to 1735 via the Cape of Good Hope to Goa, Madagascar, the African and Malabar coasts, the Dutch trading station at Delagoa Bay (now Maputo Bay in Mozambique), abandoned in 1730, and Batavia. The unfortunate voyage of Jacob Franken with the ship de Naarstigheid (first published Haarlem, 1761) describes the voyage from Batavia along the coast of Bengal to Holland in the years 1756 to 1760. Small tear in folding map. Good copy of this narrative on a voyage to the East Indies by Jacob de Bucquoy.l Mendelssohn I, pp. 425-426; cf. Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 294 & 295 (Dutch editions); Tiele, Bibl. 213 (Dutch edition); not in Howgego, to 1800.

SKJÖLDEBRAND, Anders Frederik, Comte Erik Johansen DAHLBERG and Johann Philip LEMBKE.
First edition of a splendid series of sepia aquatints with battle scenes, engraved by Skjöldebrand (1757-1834) after drawings by Count Erik Johansen Dahlberg (1625-1703), as painted by Johann Philip Lembke (1631-1711). They glorify the military victories of Charles X Gustavus, King of Sweden (1622-1660), in the war against Poland and Denmark, 1655-58. Dahlberg was one of the most important generals to Charles Gustavus during the war, and played a major role in planning the famous crossing of the frozen Belts. Depicted here are the battles of Czarnova, Columbi, Guesne, Varsovie (Warsaw) (three), Philippova, Ivarnaes, and the crossing of the Saane and Grand Belt. Another aquatint portrays Charles Gustavus defending himself against seven Tartars. The portrait of the Swedish King, regally mounted on horseback, is engraved by Sandrart after a painting by David Klöcher von Ehrenstrahl (ca. 1620-1698).With bookplate. Top and lower part of spine damaged, binding edges rubbed and bumped; some very minor soiling on the plates. Very good copy.

BURKE, Edmund.
London: for R. and J. Dodsley, 1757. Octavo (180 x 109 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked, brown morocco label, later double gilt fillet to covers. Bound without half-title, a few pencilled marginal lines and minor annotations. Endpapers split in hinges but joints sturdy, sig. M standing slightly proud, scattered light foxing and soiling but contents clean, a couple of page corners creased, short closed tear at foot of C6 and G3. A very good copy. First edition of Burke's treatise on aesthetics, published in what Todd calculates to have been "a rather small edition, possibly limited to 500 copies". The Philosophical Enquiry was Burke's first truly successful work, winning praise in many quarters: Dr Johnson, "an example of true criticism"; Hume, "a very pretty treatise"; Reynolds, "the admirable treatise"; and Kant describing Burke as "the foremost author" in "the empirical exposition of aesthetic judgments" (Writings and Speeches, 1.187-8). "His enduring achievement was to have tackled a difficult subject in a fashion accessible to any educated reader" (ODNB). The book was also fundamental to subsequent discourse about the sublime in Romantic literature and art. ESTC T42248; Draper, p. 15; Todd 5a. [Attributes: First Edition]
