1755. Treatise of Such Mathematical Instruments as are usually put into a Portable Case; John Robertson, London, 1755. This book contains multiple fold-outs and is in amazingly nice condition for its age. All pages appear to be intact and binding seems tight. It has a leather-spine with paper covered boards which makes me wonder if it's been rebound. Regardless, this is a great collectible book. See photos. The last photo gives a visual of how many detailed fold-outs are within the book, it might look messy, that is caused by the fragile nature of the folds. Thanks for looking, bidding, and buying! CONDILLAC, Etienne Bonnot de.
Londres & Paris, Chez de Bure l'aine, 1754, 1755. Two vols, 8vo, pp. [2], vi, 345, [1]; [4], 335, [1]; a crisp, clean copy in full contemporary mottled calf, flat spines decorated in gilt, contrasting morocco lettering-pieces; spine ends skillfully repaired, some surface wear, spine gilding rubbed; nineteenth-century monastic stamp on the front free end-papers.First edition of this great classic of psychology and Condillac's most important work: 'no student of the history of philosophy can afford to neglect [it]' (IESS, vol 3, pp. 213). The work 'had a double purpose: to show how modifications of mind, or impressions received by way of the senses, could give rise automatically, without reference to unobservable spirits or innate ideas, to all our mental operations, and at the same time to defend the existence of an external, material world. The first purpose was familiar, the second required a new approach, the rejection of the assumption that sensations or impressions are images occasioned by external material things' (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). In this work Condillac 'made a clear break with Locke's theory of the dual origin of ideas. There is only one origin or fount, namely sensation' (Copleston, 6, I, p. 43). Condorcet's careful analysis of actual sensations, which constitute more of our experience than had hitherto been allowed, and his emphasis on the central importance of attention influenced nineteenth-century European naturalism, most particularly in literature and popular science.Garrison-Morton 4968; Tchemerzine II, 479; En Français dans le texte, 158; INED 11 … [Click Below for Full Description]

GERDIL, Giacinto Sigismondo.
In Torino, nella Stamperia Reale, MDCCLV [1755]. FIRST EDITION. Two works in one volume, large 4to, pp. [xxiii], [i] blank, 429, [1] imprimatur, [2] blank; [ii], lxlv, [1] blank; [iv], xcvi; pp 184-193 of first work bound out of order; paper repair to title page, not affecting text; otherwise, aside from some occasional spotting, clean and fresh throughout; in contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments with label lettered in gilt; some wear to boards and spine, which is chipped at head and foot, but still a good copy. Rare first edition of the most substantial philosophical work of the Italian theologian, philosopher, and Cardinal Giacinto Sigismondo Gerdil (1718-1802). Although the title suggests a theological work, Gerdil's interest is here almost exclusively philosophical. After a lengthy preliminary discourse, and an introduction in which he examines the views of ancient philosophers in general on the nature and existence of God, he divides the work into two books, dealing in turn with the Ionic sect, particulary Thales, Anaxagoras, Anaximander, Diogenes, and Archelaus, and the Italian sect, i.e. Pythagoras and Pythagoreans. He sees a striking conformity in the teachings on the soul between the Pythagoreans and Leibniz. The pre-Socratic and classical philosophical traditions are for Gerdil the epistemological foundations of theology and for the investigating the nature of god and the soul. The appendix (in two parts), Dissertazioni sopra l'origine del senso morale, which is not always found together with the main work, is dealing in its first part with perception, un … [Click Below for Full Description]
