Hutcheson, Francis; Leechman, William; Hutcheson, Francis
London: A. Millar over-against Katharine-Street in the Strand / T. Longman in Pater-noster Row, 1755. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. First edition (ESTC T99472). Rebound in beige cloth with leather spine labels, gilt titles, new end sheets. 1755 Hard Cover. [xii], xlviii, 358; [iv], 380 pp. 4to. Among the Scottish literati and illuminati who subscribed to these volumes were Adam Ferguson, William Hamilton, Henry Home Lord Kanes, and, of course, Adam Smith. Gladys Bryson in Man and Society (1945) was probably the first modern scholar to contend that Francis Hutcheson was the 'father' of the Scottish Enlightenment, a view confirmed two decades ago by Charles Camic in Experience and Enlightenment (1983): "His celebrated proclamations on economics, politics, psychology, and ethics challenged a solid phalanx of received wisdoms and anticipated many of the specific arguments... of Hume and Smith." A System of Moral Philosophy was published some nine years after Hutcheson's death and is doubtless his most comprehensive work, covering not just the moral philosophy implied by the title but legal and political matters as well. T.D. Campbell, in his essay, 'Francis Hutcheson: 'Father' of the Scottish Enlightenment' (in The Origins and Nature of the Scottish Enlightenment, ed. by R.H. Campbell and Andrew S. Skinner, 1982) has argued that Hutcheson exhibits a 'radicalism, uncommon at the time, which often goes far beyond anything that can be found in his more cautious Scottish successors,' and much of the radical development that Hutcheson was giving to political theo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[BRILLAT-SAVARIN, Jean Anthelme].
[2], XIV, [1], 6-390; 442 pp.Very rare first issue of the first edition of the most influential work on cultured eating ever published; only 500 copies were printed. In this first issue the “e” of printer's address is printed horizontally. This is the only edition that was published while the author was still alive. The fame of the book was cause for countless re-issues, editions and translations. The author Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826) delivers his reflections on the culture of eating and gastronomy in a style that can be described as witty, refined and tasteful. It struck a chord with its contemporary readers and still does today, judging from the proverbs that were coined by Brillat-Savarin and remain in use: "The destiny of nations depends on the manner in which they feed themselves"; "A dessert without cheese is like a beautiful woman with only one eye" and many others. It is indeed a great French classic.Bookplate of Louis Rey on free endpaper of both volumes. A small repaired tear in the first free endpaper of volume 1. Minor foxing on the last few pages of volume 2. Small piece torn from the foot of page 181 in volume 2. Otherwise in very good, clean and crisp condition.l Carteret I, p. 146-147; Crahan 4gr; Heirs of Hippocrates 702; Vicaire 120; Bitting (later eds.); Osler (later eds.).

FUSS, Nicolas.
[10], 83, [1 blank] pp. plus plates.First and only edition of an important manual on the construction of telescopes and microscopes, the first publication by Nicolas Fuss (1755-1826), who grew up in a modest Swiss family but was to become one of the leading mathematicians and astronomers of his generation. The majority of Fuss's writings present solutions to problems raised by Leonhard Euler, in the fields of mathematics, mechanics, astronomy and geodesy. Euler's memoirs had been published earlier, but they were inaccessible to most people working in optics. Fuss published the present work, giving a very simple and rather schematic résumé of Euler's work. He listed "a number of formulae for the construction of telescopes with a magnification of five to fifty times, for achromatic telescopes with three lenses and a magnification from 25 to 320 times, and for achromatic telescopes with four or five lenses" (Daumas). Fuss gave all the necessary theoretical measurements for constructing these instruments. It ends with a description of a microscope with an achromatic objective of three lenses. With a small brown stain in the lower outside corner of the last few leaves, a small tear in the gutter margin of one leaf and small stains in the foot margin of another, but otherwise in very good condition and with large margins. Rebacked and restored at an early date.l DSB V, pp. 209-210; Daumas, Scientific instruments, pp. 152-153.

ROTH, Johann Michaël.
[20] engraved ll., some printed on both sides. An extremely rare and stunning display of the vibrant graphic and topographic trade in mid-18th-century Augsburg, the main part devoted primarily to the earthquake and tsunami that desolated Lisbon and many other cities in Portugual, southwest Spain and northwest Africa on 1 November 1755. It brings together maps, plans, prospects, bird's-eye views and other views from most of the leading Augsburg print publishers of the day, bringing the destruction into sharp graphic focus, with many views, often including before and after pictures, of Lisbon, Meknes (Mequines) and Fez in Morocco. Several views show looters or others who tried to exploit the chaos hanging at the gallows. The collection goes beyond a mere record of the earthquake and tsunami, however, providing an excellent overview of Portuguese and Spanish topography in general, with many city views, plans and fortification plans. The title-page notes that the publisher can supply copies already bound ("gebunden zu bekommen"). But it also seems likely that the present copy was supplied by the publisher in its wrapper made of so-called gold brocade paper. Augsburg raised the production of this kind of decorated paper to an art in the mid-18th-century, and the present example (two whole sheets, for the front and back wrapper, printed from the same block) is a fine specimen. In very good condition, with only the spine of the wrapper somewhat tattered. A beautiful copy and the only complete copy located, of a splendid display of Augsburg prints relating to the great Lisbon earthqu … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEUTTER, Matthäus.
Augsburg: c.1755. Original colour. 500 x 585mm. A scarce variant of Seutter's plan of Lisbon, printed from a new plate. Mostly It reproduces the original plan, but new fortifications and warehouses have been added in the port, and more buildings are named elsewhere. The new plate is more obvious in the prospect under the plan, titled ''Ruin der Stadt Lisabona''. Instead of the serene view of a prosperous city, Lisbon is shown in flames as the people run to save themselves. Offshore the rough seas are sinking ships, with longboats struggling to reach shore. The new plate was published in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1755, which, combined with a firestorm and a tsunami rushing in from the Atlantic, destroyed 85% of the city. The destruction of such an important city inspired the first scientific study an earthquake and, under the supervision of the Marquês de Pombal, the erection of the first buildings with anti-seismic features.

CORNELIS APOSTOOL [1762-1844] Dutch Artist.
1755. Etching with aquatint, laid down, some browning, small tears around edges, two corners damaged, Sir Foster Cunliffe [1755-1834] of Acton Park, near Wrexham founded the Society of British Bowmen in 1787. Originally there were 74 members: 37 ladies and 37 gentlemen. Meetings were held fortnightly from the first Friday in May in the grounds of nearby country houses including Erddigg. This print is dedicated to George, Prince of Wales who was the patron of the society. The original drawing is in the British Museum. Prints of archery meetings are rare: this would appear to be the earliest recorded.

Burn
London: Lintot. Justice of the Peace & Parish Officer -Richard Burn 1755 - Vol 1 Rare First Ed!. Dispatched with Royal Mail 2nd Class. Now here is a rarity A First Edition of what many people would suggest is the most revered of historical law books. This work went through many editions into the 19th century. This is VOLUME ONE only of a two volume work. Sadly I do not have volume two. I regard this as being in a good condition even though there is some minor damage which I will describe below: Measures approx 21 cm x 14 cm The book is sound and has Brown boards which are good and well attached , it has a leather spine, it looks to be the original boards and spine cover. There is no title on the spine . I am unsure if there would have been a title but if there was, then it is not obvious that it has been lost. There is a number 1 embossed on the spine. Minor shelf wear top and bottom There is an inscription dated 1759 on inside page - see photo. Including adverts at the rear, this is approx 545 pages. As can be seen on the photo there is some minor damage to the rear board - see photo. This damage extends into the book to lesser degrees back to Page 511 where it is barely noticeable, I have tried to illustrate this in the photographs. None of the damage affects the text as it is at the very bottom on the page . This is therefore only affecting the last few pages of this detailed piece of work, If I had both volumes and if in a very good condition then this would be extremely valuable. Even with just one volume and with the minor damage described it is still quite valuable a … [Click Below for Full Description]

He thus, as remarked by W. D. Conybeare, "first carried into execution the idea, proposed by Martin Lister years before, of geological maps." CLAIRAC, Louis André de.
Abhandlung von der Befestigungskunst im Felde.Breslau and Leipzig, Johann Jacob Korn, 1755. 4to. With 41 folding engraved plates and several woodcut head- and tailpieces. Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled spine. 24, [4] 262 pp. First edition of the German translation of a richly illustrated manual aimed at young engineers attached to an army in the field. According to the author, an engineer must combine two types of knowledge: theoretical knowledge - which includes algebra, mathematics and geometry - and practical knowledge. In his manual, Clairac aims to combine these two types of knowledge, for only then can one excel in the science of fortification. He therefore gives all the theoretical techniques of fortification, but at the same time instructs the reader in the fortification of places such as a cemetery, old château or church. With library stamp and early owner's inscription. Title-page with some stains, folding engraved plates frayed along the edges and creased. Binding rubbed, with a tear along the spine detaching the back board from the binding. Hitch and L. Hawes; A. Millar; and R. and J. Dodsley,, 1755. Johnson's Dictionary, the first great endeavour of its kind 2 volumes, folio (407 x 252 mm). Contemporary calf, skilfully rebacked to style with full gilt spines, red and green morocco labels, by Aquarius. Titles in red and black. Contemporary Scottish armorial bookplates of Charles Craigie ("Honeste vivo": Fairbairn, Crests, pl. 91, no. 4). Titles a little browned, a few trivial marks internally, but an excellent copy. First edition. The creation of the dictionary was Johnson's greatest literary labour. Helped by a succession of needy amanuenses who worked in the surprisingly spacious garret of his house in Gough Square, he experienced the death of his mother and underwent agonies of procrastination before finally completing the task in his 46th year. Boswell called it a work of "superior excellence" and "much greater mental labour, than mere Lexicons, or Word Books as the Dutch call them" (Life of Johnson: An Edition of the Original Manuscript. Vol I: 1709-1765, ed. Marshall Waingrow, Edinburgh, 1994, p. 213). As his use of 114,000 illustrative quotations shows, Johnson clearly intended to combine lexicography with entertainment and instruction; this was the only work he called "my Book" (Letters I: 71). Since it was now owned by the booksellers who had paid him £1,575 in advance, publication by no means saved him from … [Click Below for Full Description]

J Payne, 1755. EVELYN, JOHN. Sculptura, or the History and Art of Chalcography, and engraving in copper. to which is annexed, a new manner of engraving, or mezzotinto, communicated by His Highness Prince Rupert to the author of this treatise, John Evelyn, Esq; The second edition, containing some corrections and additions taken from the margin of the author's printed copy.and memoirs of the author's life. [4], xxxvi, 140pp., etched portrait of Evelyn by Thomas Worlidge, one en-graved plate, and a folding mezzotint by Houston after Prince Rupert. Contemporary tree calf neatly rebacked. Some slight foxing and light browning, but a very good copy. 8vo. J. Payne. 1755. ~ The first edition of 1662 contains the first published reference to mezzo-tint, "invented and communicated by His Highness Prince Rupert". The description of this new technique is left "aenigmatical" as the Prince "did not think it necessary that an art so curious and (as yet) so little vulgar.was to be prostituted at so cheap a rate as the mere naked describing of it here would too soon have expos'd it to." The second edition was published after Evelyn's death, and the revisions form corrections and additions which Eve-lyn made in the margins of his own copy of the first edition.
