John Kidgell
See item description. (London): J. Newbery, 1755. First edition. Two volumes. [4], xvi, [2], 264, [4]; [1], 306, [6] p. Illustrated with hand-coloured frontispiece and engraved plate. Contemporary full calf, blind-ruled borders. 5 raised bands to spine. Red morocco label with gilt lettering. 12mo (16.8cm x 10.5cm). Very Good condition. Boards and spine a bit rubbed and a little marked. The inner hinges have started but bindings still solid. Pen cipher to endpapers. Offsetting from front pastedown just bleeding through to top of frontispiece and title page. The latter also with offsetting from facing f/p. Similar bleed through from rear pastedown to preceeding pages. Title page of Vol. 2 with similar offsetting from endpaper. Pages generally clean. Light age-toning to paper, and just an odd spot of foxing here and there. A nice set! Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images. A nice set of this whimsical 18th century novel by John Kidgell, which scholars have concluded contains the second only mention in print of the word baseball, or 'base-ball' as it appears in the text (Vol. 1, p9). The first appearance of the word in print was a number of years earlier, but apparently no copies of that work still exist, making this the first extant appearance. Volume 1 has a nice hand-coloured engraved frontispiece of a playing card, and there is one further full-page plate. [Attributes: First Edition]

Lessing , Mendelssohn
Schuster, (Danzig), 1755. Condition: Sehr gut. LESSING, Gotthold Ephraim & MENDELSSOHN, Moses - "Pope ein Metaphysiker!" EXTREM RARE Erstausgabe im Schuster Verlag, Danzig (1755). Zustand: Sehr gut eingebunden, in wahrscheinlich späterem Halbledereinband, exzellenter Zustand. Handschriftliche Eintragung der Zeit auf der Titelseite. Innen makellos, minimalst stockfleckig.
[32]+535 pages with indices. Octavo (8 1/4" x 6") bound in original vellum with hand-written title to spine and ties. (Palua 84238) Second Spanish edition, first published in Mexico (1712) and Spain (1719). Juan de Esteyneffer was a Moravian German lay Jesuit missionary sent to the New World. He is known for his 1711 work Florilegio Medicinal, which compiled a combination of New World traditional medicine, European materia medica, and 18th-century European medical diagnosis. Esteyneffer was born in Iglau, Moravia. His original German name is unclear; Juan de Esteyneffer was its rendering in Spanish, and the last name is also variously given as Steinhofer, Steinhöfer, Steinheffer, Steineffer, or Estainefer. He joined the Jesuits on September 27, 1686, and studied pharmacy in Brno. He was sent to the Jesuit College at Chihuahua to help care for elderly and ill missionaries. While there, he compiled the Florilegio medicinal, completing it in 1711, with a first publication in 1712 (Mexico: Heirs of J. J. Guillena Carrascoso, 1712). The work combined traditional European and New World medical lore with what was then modern medical science, and anthropologist Margarita Artschwager Kay posits that it served to standardize herbal therapy in Northern Mexico and the Southwestern United States. The work contains much interesting information respecting the diseases common among the Mexican and Southwestern Indians, along with a discussion of the medicinal use of local plants and herbs, including a vocabulary in Spanish and the native Mexic … [Click Below for Full Description]

JOHNSON, SAMUEL
London: W. Strahan for J. & P. Knapton, 1755. First edition of this enduring classic of English literature. This is Johnson s audacious attempt to tame his unruly native tongue combining huge erudition with a steely wit and remarkable clarity of thought (Hitchings). Dr. Johnson performed with his Dictionary the most amazing, enduring, and endearing one-man feat in the field of lexicography It is the dictionary itself which justifies Noah Webster s statement that Johnson s writings had, in philology, the effect which Newton s discoveries had in mathematics (PMM). To be sure, there had been dictionaries before his. The difference is that, while these were compiled, Johnson s was written. The glory of the book is that it is also a compendium of English literature, reprinting fine examples of words from the masters, often Shakespeare or Sir Francis Bacon. Johnson sought to intersperse with verdure and flowers the dusty desarts of barren philology (Smithsonian Book of Books). Johnson illustrated the meanings of his 40,000 definitions with more than 100,000 quotations drawn from the time of Shakespeare down to Johnson s own time. He wrote in the preface, It is the fate of those that toil at the lower employments of life, to be rather driven by fear of evil, than attracted by the prospect of good; to be punished for neglect, where success would have been without applause, and diligence without reward. Among these unhappy mortals is the writer of dictionaries. Every other author may aspire to praise; the lexicographer can only hope to escape reproach. This enormous book is generall … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovan Battista PIRANESI (Mogliano Veneto 1720 - Roma 1778)
- PRIMO STATO DI SEI - Acquaforte e bulino, 1755 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Uncommon map showing eastern part of the United States and Canada coast. Boundaries coloured according key, indicating French, Spanish and English possessions. Small inset showing Niagara Falls. With an engraved key mentioning both English and French boundaries pretension. With German translation underneath this key. This map was published by George Louis Le Rouge's in his Atlas Ameriquain in 1755. This map clearly shows a French bias and portraits a greatly reduced British presence in North America. Fort Duquesne is show in two places on the map, according to D'Anville and Jeffrey's. Crossed swords mark the battles between the French and British at Fort Duquesne and Crown Point, below Lake Champlain.

Benedictis, Antonio Fernado
Augusta Vindelicorum, S. Pingitzer, 1755. 45 Bll. 88 S. Gr.-8°, Pappband der Zeit mit Buntpapierbezug Scarce Christian Cabalist work containing no less than 449 "moral statements" from a movement influenced by a desire to interpret aspects of Christianity even more mystically than current Christian Mystics. Christian Kabbalah fully arose during the Renaissance as a result of continuing studies of Greek texts and translations by Christian Hebraists. The invention of the printing press also played its part in the wider dissemination of texts. Christian Kabbalah reinterpreted Kabbalistic doctrine to a distinctly Christian perspective, linking Jesus Christ, His atonement, and His resurrection to the Ten Sefirot, linking the upper three Sephirot to the hypostases of the Trinity and the last seven to the lower or earthly world, or would make Kether the Creator (or the Spirit), Hokhmah the Father, and Binah - the supernal mother - Mary, which places Mary on a divine level with God, something the orthodox churches have always refused to do. Christian Cabalists sought to transform Kabbalah into a dogmatic weapon to turn back against the Jews to compel their conversion. Those who promoted the knowledge of Kabbalah beyond exclusively Jewish circles were: Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494); Johann Reuchlin (1455-1522) who was Pico's most important follower; Francesco Giorgi (1467-1540), a Venetian Franciscan friar who has been considered a central figure in 16th-century Christian Kabbalah both by his contemporaries and by modern scholars; Paolo Riccio (1506-15 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed for J. Worrall (and 3 others, 1755. Seventh edition. 8vo. [viii], 24 pp., disbound (removed from a nonce volume). Front cover a little soiled, water mark at fore-edge and bottom throughout otherwise a good copy. Preserved in a mylar L-sleeve backed with lig-free board. Curious sermon occasioned by the 1755 London earthquakes. From the important Preface, which was not included in the 1st edition: "It is one very prevailing opinion, that earthquakes are not common in this country. They are not. But the less common they are, the more should they alarm us when they come; for there is a providence over this country, and when He orders, our land shall shake and reel like a drunkard. He sent two earthquakes lately, to stir us up to repentance, and he who sent these can send a third, and London may share the fate of Lisbon. It is another opinion, that earthquakes are the effects of second causes. Be it so. Then there is a first cause on whom they depend. But the learned can give a philosophical account of them, What! such an account, I suppose, as they did of the earthquakes in the year 1750, by changing their names into airquakes, and then they were explained philosophically. It will not be so easy to account for the shaking of the land for several hundred miles, and of the sea for several thousands at once, which was the case in these last earthquakes." According to Romaine's biographer: "The times in which he was called to the exercise of his ministry in the West End of the metropolis were distinguished by some signal judgments of Almighty God; such particularly as were … [Click Below for Full Description]

1755. In gutem Erhaltungszustand - Leicht gebräunt. Titel: Ie Mappe-Monde Gebiet bzw. Ort: Weltkarte Kartograph: Jean Palairet (1697 - 1774) Jahr: 1755 Größe des Plattenbereichs: 43 x 71 cm Technik: Kupferstich Zustand (Perfekt/ Sehr gut/ Gut/ Ordentlich/ Mäßig/ Schlecht): In gutem Erhaltungszustand. English description: A rare and decorative map of the world in two hemispheres. The map shows the cartographic knowledge of the world at the beginning of the 18th century, still without the new discoveries through the expeditions in the Pacific which took place later in the 18th century. Therefore the representation of Australia and New Zeeland is still based on the descriptions by Abel Tasman, deriving from his expedition in 1624. The map is in good condition with so … [Click Below for Full Description]
