An excellent copy.ìIn some manner not yet accounted for, Mirabeau had obtained, and for many years retained, possession of the unpublished manuscript of Cantillonís Essai sur la Nature du Commerce en gÃ?nÃ?ral...[which was] published in 1755. The manuscript had made a deep impression on Mirabeau. At one time he seems to have intended to modify and publish it as its own. Subsequently he proceeded to write a running commentary upon the Essai, and it is the work thus commenced which appeared, subsequently to the publication of Cantillonís manuscript, under the title of LíAmi des Hommes, ou TraitÃ? de la population, in three parts, with the imprint â?¡ Avignon, 1756...This remarkable treatise created the greatest sensation throughout the whole of Europe. It is said to have gone through forty editions, and was translated into several languages. Its anonymous author, soon discovered, became the idol of the day, and was generally referred to by the sobriquet which he had chosen for the title of his book. The meridonal vivacity of his style, his wit, his naÃ?ve egotism, his piquant irony and frequent paradox gave him a great literary vogue, and led some of his readers to compare him to Montaigne; while the importance of his subject and the ability of his views, in turn original, daring, and profound, earned for him the more durable attention of those who cared rather for the matter than the style...its leading propositions are the following: Population is the source of wealth, and the means of subsistence are the measure of population. Agriculture is the great source of subsistence. A large population is desirable; and to this end the encouragement of agriculture is the means...Luxury, idleness, and public debts are to be reprobated...The influx from country to town should be counteracted and absenteeism should cease. Religious toleration, free tradeóinternal and external,óa more equal distribution of wealth, a diminution and more equitable partition of the burdens of taxation, are among the desiderata for the economic improvement of the countryî (Palgrave II, pp. 775-776).ìIn 1758 appeared a continuation of LíAmi des Hommes...in which the hand of Quesnay is plainly visible. It consists of a Dialogue entre le Surintendant díO. et L. D. H., a reprint of the MÃ?moire sur les â?¦tats provinciaux, with a reply to objections which had been published against it, and a series of, separately paged, Questions intÃ?ressantes sur la Population, líAgriculture, et le commerce proposÃ?es aux AcadÃ?mies et autres sociÃ?tÃ?s sÁavantes des Provinces, asking for local information upon agricultural conditions, and also suggesting some general considerations somewhat in the style of Berkeleyís Querist. These questions, the reader is informed, are not by the author of the MÃ?moire sur les â?¦tats provinciaux. In 1760 appeared the fifth and sixth partsî (Palgrave II, p. 776).Einaudi 3941.

Paris: Desaint & Saillant, Durand, 1756. Octavo, engraved frontispiece portrait by Tardieu le fils, and 10 engraved plates by Chedel, engraved titlepage vignette, headpiece to dedication leaf and tailpieces at end of each canto; a very attractive copy in contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt, crimson morocco label. First edition, rare: "an epic poem on the discovery of America" (Sabin). This attractive work contains many beautifully-executed plates, including scenes depicting Columbus' landing in the New World, his introduction to the American court, and a vivid shipwreck. Although the work is very much the product of Du Boccage's agile pen, she shows that she is also familiar with the voyage accounts of Anson and Frezier, among a litany of erudite notes. Madame du Boccage (Marie-Anne Le Page) ran a distinguished salon in Paris, frequented by Voltaire, Fontenelle, and other luminaries. Together with her husband, Pierre-Joseph Fiquet du Boccage, she had a passionate interest in literature, and published several interesting works, including imitations of Milton and Pope. Le Colombiade is her greatest contribution, a poised revisiting of the moment of contact between Columbus and the indigenous Americans. The work picks up Colombus as he meets a thoughtful leader of an Indian nation, who asks who he is and why he is there. "Columbus replies in astonishing detail, telling his auditor of 'the three continents which form the universe', of the Supreme Being, of European manners and inventions, of his project, of Queen Isabella, of scurvy, of strange 'phenomena' of the sea, and of unrest among the sailors. 'Merveilleux Etranger,' exclaims the chief, no doubt overwhelmed by the barrage of heroic couplets. After many adventures a prayerful Columbus is visited by a tutelary angel who reveals the vast consequences of his enterprise." (Terence Martin, 'American Literature Discovers Columbus', in Christopher K. Lohmann, Discovering Difference, Indiana, 1993, p. 25). Throughout, there is an emphasis on the national and European consequences of New World discovery, and the poem is, in a sense, a companion piece to her earlier play Les Amazones (1749), in that much of the American authority is vested in the figure of a powerful woman. A second edition was published in 1758, but included only 8 plates.

H.L. Guerin and L.F. Delatour, 1754-, Paris 1756 - Two volumes, quarto, with three folding plates; in fine crisp condition in contemporary French mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments with floral motifs, double labels, marbled endpapers and edges. The explorer as prodigy. Bougainville's first published work, and a milestone in his life. Few explorers could claim such a heady start to their careers. This quite precocious publication - Bougainville was in his early twenties when he completed the first volume - would kick-start his career and bring him wide recognition. By the time he completed the work by publishing the second volume in 1756 he was already serving as secretary to the French ambassador in London, and was soon elected a member of the Royal Society in London, an unusual distinction for such a young foreigner. Of course a great change of direction then occurred with his distinguished military and then naval careers, and his first voyage to the Falkland Islands; this was followed in 1766 by his most famous achievement, his circumnavigation, the first such French voyage, in the course of which only the Great Barrier Reef prevented his landing on Australian soil. He had specifically set out to reach "New Holland" by running west from Quiros's "Espiritu Santo", but turned away from the barrier presented by the Reef, heading north and coasting New Guinea. From the early 1750s Bougainville had studied under the mathematician and Enlightenment figure Jean le Rond d'Alembert, one of the editors of the Encyclopédie. The Traité du calcul integral, one of the earliest complete treatises on the integral calculus, reflects the influence of d'Alembert and follows on the work of l'Hôpital half a century earlier who had dealt with the infinitesimal calculus and had brought differential notation into general use in Europe.

The Hague: Pieter de Hondt, 1756. Quarto, title in red & black, handcoloured frontispiece and 39 finely coloured engraved plates, some folding; modern bookplate; a fine copy in contemporary sprinkled calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments. With unusually beautiful handcoloured engravings of corals. First Dutch edition of this famous early work on corals and marine biology, with a fine series of strangely beautiful engravings of coral structures, here unusually in original handcolouring. The same publisher produced a French language edition in the same year: both versions were based on the English edition of 1755 (An Essay Towards a Natural History of the Corallines), the plates in which were not issued in colour. We have seen a copy of the French version with its plates coloured in what seems to be an identical manner. With their plates in this wonderful colouring the Dutch and French issues are far more beautiful than the English original. Ellis (whom Linnæus praised as a 'bright star of natural history' and 'the main support of natural history in England') was awarded the Copley medal of the Royal Society, and secured a glowing reputation as one of the leading naturalists of his day for his researches and investigations into the true nature of corallines, which he determined to be of an animal rather than a vegetable nature. The corallines not only captured the public's imagination but were seen by both natural historians and philosophers as providing clues to the mysteries of life on earth: 'As the zoöphyte is in the middle betwixt the vegetable and animal', wrote Lord Monboddo, 'so man appears to occupy the space betwixt the several classes of animals'. Professor Bernard Smith reproduces the wonderful frontispiece of the book, and points to the significance of Ellis' work as possessing a 'strong aesthetic cast. In 1751 he received a collection of 'sea plants' from Anglesey and Dublin and in order to preserve the rarer specimens remarkable for their colour; 'expanded them on paper in fresh water… when properly dried, I dispersed on thin boards covered with white paper in such a manner as to form a kind of landscape…'… With these miniature marine landscapes, the ancestors of today's indoor aquaria, Ellis amused the Princess Dowager of Wales, and the young princesses. Solander, who brought back many rare corals from the Pacific, co-operated closely with Ellis in his work… The Duchess of Portland assembled an enormous collection of corals… Sir Ashton Lever devoted a room to zoophytes in his Museum which made a feature of Pacific curiosities…'. (European Vision and the South Pacific, 1984, p. 104, pls. 68-9).

The squadron sailed via the Cape of Good Hope and Madagascar to India, where they visited the chief English settlements and major cities, Ives attending the company hospitals and staff in each place. On the admiral's death in August 1757, Ives resigned his appointment, and travelled home overland from Basrah, through Baghdad, Mosul, and Aleppo, thence by Cyprus, to Leghorn and Venice, and home through Germany and the Netherlands, arriving in England in March 1759. A Voyage from England to India described his journey to India, his experiences there, and his overland route home. Ives's presence at many of the events described and his close relationship with Vice - Admiral Watson give his historical narrative an unusual importance, and his accounts of the manners and customs of the inhabitants, of the diseases and medical practices, of the natural history, and of the products of the countries he visited, some then little known to Europeans, are those of an acute and, for his time, relatively enlightened observer. HISTOIRE DES NAVIGATIONS AUX TERRES AUSTRALES

Paris. 1756.. Paris. 1756.. Two volumes. [2],xiv,463pp. [and pp.437-50, pagination repeated]; [2],513,[1]pp., plus seven folding maps. This set lacks the 6pp. of errata sometimes found. Quarto. Contemporary calf; rebacked, gilt leather labels. Corners slightly worn. Older institutional stamps removed from titlepages; contemporary authorship note on each titlepage. Minor foxing and toning, some light scattered soiling. About very good. A fundamentally important work on early exploration and discovery in the Pacific. Charles de Brosses was president of the Burgundian Parlement, and a shareholder in the French India Company. His work is the first collection of voyages to deal exclusively with the Pacific, and was intended to spur French commercial activity and colonization in the region. Brosses includes a long essay on the advantages to be gained from discoveries and an actual plan for a voyage and settlement. His ideas influenced Bougainville on the French navigator's Pacific explorations and colonization of the Falklands. Captain Cook took a copy of Brosses' work with him on his first voyage, which is ironic in that part of the author's aim was to preempt and challenge British exploration in the Pacific. John Callendar largely copied Brosses' work for his TERRA AUSTRALIS COGNITA (1768). Brosses coined several important terms in this work, including "Australasia" and "Polynesia," though the idea of calling the southeastern Pacific "Magellanica" has not survived. "This is an extremely important and thorough collection of voyages, and one of the outstanding works relating to the early history of Australasia. It contains an account of all voyages, beginning with the second expedition of Vespucci in 1502 and ending in 1747, in which navigators touched upon the supposed southern continent of Magellaniea, which is now represented by Australia and some scattered islands in the Antarctic regions. It also contains the voyages of Magellan, Drake, Hawkins, Nodal, Schouten, Tasman, and others. The work...is of special importance because in it Brosses proposes that France should settle Australia with her foundlings, beggars, and criminals" - Hill. The collection contains several significant maps, including Vaugondy's "Carte reduite de l'Australie pour servir a la lecture de l'Histoire des Terres Australes." There are also maps of the Caroline Islands, New Guinea, and the Straits of Magellan, among others. A rare and important work. SABIN 8388. HILL, p.34. KROEPELIEN 132. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An Appeal to the People: Containing the Genuine Entire Letter of Admiral Byng... (and) Further Particulars in Relation to the Case of Admiral Byng

London, 1756. 76 (and) 70 pp. This is one of the more tragic episodes in British naval history. On his way to relieve the garrison on Minorca during the Seven Years’ War, Byng was surprised by the French fleet. After an indecisive engagement with the French he retreated without being able to resupply the garrison. Byng thought he was doing what he needed to protect his ships, but public and official opinion were against him. He was found guilty of dereliction of his duties. By the law of the day, this was a capital crime, and he was executed, despite appeals for clemency from people in power. See DNB. NMM V, part 1, 1168. The two pamphlets, dating from the time of the event, were written in support of Byng. “Appeal” is missing the bottom of the last leaf, with no loss of text. “Further Particulars” has a dark smudge at the top of the title page. Both are otherwise in very good condition, removed from larger volumes, and both are scarce in the trade. “Appeal” presently appears online for $1500. “Particulars” for $750. A dictionary of the English language: in which the words are deduced from their originals ... abstracted from the folio edition ... to which is prefixed a grammar of the English language

London: J. Knapton [et al.], 1756. London: J. Knapton [et al.]. 1756. "First octavo and first abridged edition, the title pages in this set exhibiting the variant with ""by the author"" (see Fleeman, p. 487, Notes); 2 vols., pp. [574]; [546]; text in double column; contemporary full calf, gilt-decorated spines, red and black morocco labels; expertly rebacked with original spines laid down; a sound, handsome set. & & ""For this edition, Johnson added a new Preface and was probably responsible for most if not all of the alterations throughout ... Johnson's preface is interesting in its contrast to the Preface of the folio edition, particularly in its direct appeal to the common reader. Far from a rumination upon the transitoriness of language, the difficulties of the lexicographer, and the vanity of human wishes, the preface to the octavo edition is a marketing ploy, an attempt to assure those who had been frightened off by the folio volumes that this simplified version would fit their more basic needs ... The octavo abridgement sold very well, if not as well as the ever-persistent Bailey octavo. The 5,000 copies recorded as printed by Strahan in December 1755 were presumably sold off in the next four years, so that a new edition of the abridgement was published in 1760, again in a run of 5,000 copies"" (Reddick, The Making of Johnson's Dictionary 1746-1773, pp. 86-87). & & Alston V, 192; Chapman & Hazen, p. 138; Courtney & Smith, p. 62; Fleeman 56.4D/1."

Etat passable. Plats abîmés. Dos abîmé.
