1755 - An extremely rare Philippine imprint on native defence against piracy. 1755. Manila. Imprenta en la Compania de Jesus. In 8vo (200 mm x 135 mm). 14 pp. Recent calf. Printed on rice paper; lightly browned; a very good copy. First edition. The account of the ‘brave defense of the native Vesayans in the town of Polompong on the island of Leyte, who fought against the Muslims from Ilanos and Melanaoes’ was most probably a first hand account by the local Jesuit priest. There were several incursions by the Moros on the island of Leyte in 1754 which prior to this incident resulted in the burning to the ground of its two largest towns – Sogod and Maasim – and other villages. This account describes how the residents of Palompon defended themselves after having sought refuge in the local church. Although the town was pillaged and houses burnt to the ground, most of its inhabitants escaped death or capture for enslavement. The stone church, which had to be large enough to hold the entire community in worship, was also large enough to protect them all in a siege. Bibliotheca Filipina, 2296. Streit VI 1099.         The Whole Duty of a Woman; or, A Guide to the Female Sex

London : Printed for and sold by Edward Midwinter, 1755-01-01. Hardcover. Good. 12mo. 7th edition. Bound in contemporary calf. Wear and chipping to leather spine and boards. Tanning and toning to pages. Loss to head of fep and rear corner of last page. <Br> Kenrick's most successful work, reprinted in over 20 editions, was a courtesy book originally published in 1753. but the author was simply listed as "A Lady." Kenrick here assumed the persona of a fallen woman, now reformed, who wants to persuade other women to live a life of virtue. The irony of Kenrick's presuming to improve the moral tone of feminine England has not gone unnoticed: he has been described as "one of London's most despised, drunken, and morally degenerate hack writers in the later eighteenth century.

"A system of moral philosophy. In three books ... published from the original manuscript, by his son Francis Hutcheson, M.D. To which is prefixed some account of the life, writings, and character of the author..."

Glasgow: printed and sold by R. & A. Foulis...London: sold by A. Millar...and T. Longman. 1755. "First edition, 2 volumes, 4to, pp. [12], xlviii, 358; [4], 380; contemporary full calf neatly rebacked, red and black morocco labels on spines; board edges dry and peeling, corners restored; the binding is sound and the text is clean; a good, sound copy. Among the subscribers is Adam Smith (a student of Hutcheson's at Glasgow who took two sets), and Lord Kaims. ""Hutcheson was a close follower of the third Lord Shaftesbury, and had a great influence upon the Scottish philosophers of the 'common-sense' school. His first essays were directed against the selfish and cynical theories of Hobbes and Mandeville. He adopted and developed the 'moral sense' doctrine as given by Shaftesbury in contrast to the egoistic utilitarianism of his time...he was apparently the first writer to use Bentham's phrase, 'the greatest happiness of the greatest number'...[and] He may be thus classed as one of the first exponents of a decided utilitarianism as distinguished from 'egoistic hedonism'"" (DNB).

[9] ff., 90 pp.. 1755 Manuela Cerezo, widow of Miguel de Ortega y Bonilla, received the commission from Domingo Pantaleon Alvarez de Abreu, the bishop of Puebla, to print this work at his expense. His coat of arms, in a large woodcut, appears at the head of the dedication that Miqueorena wrote in his cell in the monastery at Carrion, in the Atlixco Valley. Undoubtedly it was also in that cell that Miqueorena, a Mercedarian who was the comendador of the Carmelite monastery at Carrion, wrote this biography of the five-time prioress of the convent of Discalced Carmelite nuns in Puebla. That convent (Convento de San Jose) was the order's first in Mexico, established in 1604, just eleven years after St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross founded the order in Spain. Mother Michaela Josepha de la Purificación (1681–1753) was a native of Puebla, born into a well-to-do family, and one of two daughters who entered religious life. Miqueorena knew Mother Michaela and helped her in a supervisory way, so his biography is based on both oral history and personal knowledge. Needless to say, he emphasizes her religiosity, her relation with God, and her humility and works of charity, but he also underscores aspects of => individuality. For example she had a gift of prophecy and an emotionally moving of saying prayers aloud. The work is printed in double-column format, in roman type with chapter summaries in italic. The title-page has an ornamental border composed of printer's flowers, other typographic flowers are used to create a head-piece on p.1, there is a nice use of initials, and the work ends with a woodcut tail-piece offering flowers in a bowl. Contemporary limp vellum with evidence of ties. A very good copy.

Wien, Ghelen, 1755. 16°. 2 Bll., 135 (1) S., Ldr. d. Zt. m. handschriftl. Oberes Kapital m. winziger Fehlstelle. Vorsatzbl. mit alter Eintragung („Auctor huius libelli fertur Ferdinandus III. [...]“). Titel m. Besitzvermerk. Titel verso m. mont. zeitgen. gest.         Rossijskaja Grammatika (Russian, i.e. Russian Grammar).

Sanktpeterburg (St. petersburg), 1755. 8vo. Very worn contemporary full calf. Leather lacking at capitals and corners, but binding is still tight. Internally a bit of soiling and damp staining (mostly quite vain), but overall in quite good condition and surprisingly clean. Many notes to pasted-down end-papers and old owner's inscriptions to title-page. 210 pp. Lacking the contents-leaf at the end. Some copies also seem to have a frontispiece, but this is not present in all copies (about half of the copies on OCLC do not collate it). It is not present here.. The extremely rare first edition of Lomonosov'e groundbreaking Russian Grammar, which completely reformed the Russian literary language, by combining Old Church Slavonic with the vernacular. Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov (1711-1765) was the first Russian scientist-naturalist of universal importance, among whose discoveries were the atmosphere of Venus and the Law of Mass Conservation in chemical reactions. He was a great polymath and was also very influential as a poet and an artist. But he was probably most influential as a linguist, as it is he, who laid the foundation of modern Russian literary language (primarily with his "Russian Grammar", 1755).In 1748 he founded the first Russian chemical laboratory at the Academy of Sciences, and it was on his initiative that the Moscow University was founded in 1755.During the first half of the XVIIIth century in Russia, deep social and cultural changes had led to a chaotic linguistic situation, which somehow had to be solved. "An important number of scholars, writers, translators - in one word, "men of learning" - participated in, and contributed to the formation of what we now call modern Literary Russian. However, the name M.V. Lomonosov (1711-1765) stands apart, and in our opinion, deserves special attention. Lomonosov can be considered the first to have influenced the course of events by establishing some basic rules and criteria, and by giving some important grammatical and stylistic guidelines within the linguistic and literary field. Among his numerous achievements in various fields of human activities, his contribution in the sphere of language is certainly among the most important. If we accept the assumption that the "men who were at the cradle of modern Russian had to have two fundamental qualifications: 1) Complete familiarity with the Church Slavic language, with Church Slavic literature and culture in the broad sense, plus a knowledge of Greek... [and], 2) a similar familiarity with the West European languages, literature and culture...," then Lomonosov certainly fulfils these criteria, As G.H. Worth points out, in order to have a unified literary language, the most important prerequisites are: a standardized grammar, and a regulated vocabulary. Indeed, Lomonosov's most important contribution lies in the achievement of both these tasks. His "Rossijskaja Grammatika" was a first comprehensive grammar of the Russian language. It was published five times between its first appearance in 1755 and the end of the eighties... It remains an indisputable fact among scholars that Lomonosov's contribution in the field of grammar was of paramount importance." (Olgica Zingg: The Role of Lomonosov in the Formation of the Early Modern Russian Literary Language, 1997, pp. 4-6)

ESTRAGOS DO TERREMOTO VATECINIO DE FELICIDADES [Damages of the Earthquake Wishes of Good Luck] In 4º (20 x 15 cm) with [11], 53 pps. Soft cover, with loose folios. It should not be bound, since it is the original sent to the Holly Office to get the licenses needed to be distributed. A unique copy presenting in the colophon the original authorisations for the edition: 'Pode Correr' [can be distributed], and 'Está conforme com o original' [it is in accordance with the original], and also 7 licenses and the respective signatures of the censors. The author states that the 1755 earthquake was not due to natural causes, as was usual at the time and disputed by humanists like Voltaire. Nevertheless, the text in epic prose depicts well the tsunami, its approach and the main places of destruction: 'rebentando a água neste vistoso campo do Bonfim' [the waves hitting this beautiful field of Bonfim]; 'verde negro das ondas' [the greenish black of the waves]; 'nas tuas ruas os barcos, os batéis, e os hiates atravessados com o ímpeto' [on your streets the boats, barges and the yachts dragged by the force of the waves]; etc. Location/localizacao: 4-6-D-59
