DISCOURS SUR L’ORIGINE ET LES FONDEMENTS DE L’INÉGALITÉ PARMI LES HOMMES.

Marc Michel Rey, Amsterdam. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"Since the Oudry's series of drawings is complete, and thus includes many more obscure fables that would not have worked well as designs for tapestries, the artist must have intended the drawings to be engraved and published together from the start . This is also backed up by the fact that all of Oudry's drawings in black ink and white gouache on bluish paper comprise the same vertical, full-page format, and each one is self-contained and fully fashioned throughout the image to created an integral composition, suitable for engraved book illustrations" (Sarah R. Cohen). Oudrys/Cochins Darstellungen "present the fables as discrete pictorial scenes enacted by a range of animals large and small . The entire "chain of being", a concept much invoked in 17th- and 18th- century philosophy, found its way into the panoply of life that populates both the texts of La Fontaine's fables and Oudry's imaginative renditions of them" (Sarah R. Cohen).

MAGESTADE FIDELÍSSIMA DE ELREY D. JOSEPH I. NOSSO SENHOR. POR AMADOR PATRÍCIO DE LISBOA. M. DCC. LVIII. [1758]. S/L. [Lisboa ou Paris?] S/I. [Francisco Luís Ameno?] In fólio de 32x23 cm. MEMORIES OF THE MAIN INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE, suffered by the Lisbon Royal Court in the year 1755, ORDERED AND OFFERED TO HIS ROYAL MAGESTY KING D. JOSEPH I. OUR LORD. BY AMADOR PATRÍCIO DE LISBOA. M. DCC. LVIII. [1758]. No place [Lisbon or Paris?] No printer [Francisco Luís Ameno?] In fólio de 32 x 23 cm. With [xxx], 355 pps. Binding: contemporary full calf, with gilt compartments and tools. Presenting an ex-libris of A. de M. Guimarães Ferreira. Old recovered tare on the frontispiece. Traces of handling and slight dump stains. Wormholes on pages 290 to 330. Ownership title [1758] and text with the template of a Christening dated 1810, both handwritten in the back of the colophon. Work published under pseudonym, printed on magnificent linen paper, using round fonts, vignette and decorative fleurons. The proximity of the date of the earthquake, the absence of the place of publication or printing, and even the large size of the press used, lead us to think that it has been printed in France, using the types from the Press of the Royal Academy of History.         Serious reflections on the manifold dangers attending the use of copper vessels,

4to., 32pp., complete with the half-title, preserved in old plain card covers. A fine copy. This is a "serious" and practical study of kitchen utensils and the risks of food poisoning. "I need not tell you, Sir," the author writes, "that copper utensils are now employed in almost every kitchen in the Kingdom; copper pots, copper stew-pans, copper sauce-pans and copper tea-kettles are all in daily use among us; to which we must add, kettles, ladles, and divers other things used in cookery, made of brass ...... these utensils, from the very nature of the metal, throw out a poisonous matter, more or less, which mixing with our food, renders it in a greater or lesser degree pernicious". (p.8). The author goes on to describe what happens when various typical food substances are placed in a copper pan (e.g. water, milk, vinegar, salt, butter, suet, and sugar). He further considers the usefulness of tinning the copper - good while it lasts but usually has a short effective life. "A very short time destroys the tinning, either wholly or in part; it may be scraped off, burnt off, melted off, or scower'd off; so that our safety herein, in great measure, depends on the virtue, care, and labour of those, who preside in the kitchen, or the scullery. The eye of a watchful mistress, a notable daughter, or a staid housekeeper, is, no doubt, a good check upon uncleanly or careless servants ....". (p.14). The author further pursues his case with examples of food poisoning. One, for example, was due to a meat cooked in a pan contaminated with "verdigrease". "A tradesman and his wife, not long since, unfortunately dined very plentifully on a fry; a dish which, it seems, they were very fond of .....". The results were disastrous. The author seems to be particularly concerned with the making of confectionery, confectioners he notes using exclusively untinned copper pans. "All the matter ...... which heated copper can throw out, and all which so active a substance as sugar can force out, is blended with our preserved fruits and sweetmeats of every kind. Of these sweetmeats children of almost every rank and age, even infants, eat in abundance; but people of quality most of all, as they scarce ever dine without a desert." (p.22). The "practice of dram-drinking", the use of copper in brewing, whether in public or private brew-houses, is equally condemned. In the final part of this essay, the author makes a number of positive recommendations. Among these he recommends the further scientific study of the subject, approves the use of plate iron (which is "light, pleasant, sweet and wholesome"), and is positive about silver. Earthen ware is particularly good - although dangerous with acids - and stone ware or china are both recommended "for the purposes of food".

Description du Cabinet Roial de Dresde touchant l'Histoire Naturelle.

Engraved arms on title, an engraved headpiece depicting the Zwinger, & two engraved folding plates. 1 p.l., 101, [1] pp. Large 4to, cont. mottled & polished sheep (minor browning), spine gilt, leather lettering piece on spine. Dresden & Leipzig: G.C. Walther, 1755. First edition, and a fine large paper copy, of the "first separate catalogue of the Dresden natural history collections housed in the magnificent baroque Zwinger (built by Poeppelmann in 1711), which also accommodated the Dresden print cabinet. This catalogue is one of the fruits of Augustus the Strong's reorganisation of the old Dresden Wunderkammer into a number of specialised collections. The collection of ancient marbles was similarly catalogued in 1733, and the prehistoric and mineralogical collections in 1749; other departments of the museum followed in the nineteenth century... "Fossils and petrifactions, animal skeletons and specimens, corals and shells were all represented in profusion, but oddities and natural curiosities still abound in the form of 'Missgeburten', peculiarly shaped plants, and two pieces of gold and silver supposedly transmuted from copper and lead by Johann Friedrich Boettger, better known for his rediscovery of the art of making porcelain. The final chapter is devoted to a model of Solomon's temple, constructed over a period of twenty years from Biblical references by a Hamburg gentleman named Schott. The model had been admired by Peter the Great and exhibited in London where a pamphlet about it was issued in 1725. The folding plates give ground-plans of the Zwinger."-Grinke, From Wunderkammer to Museum, 50. Very nice copy, printed on large paper. A German language edition was also published in the same year. ❧ Murray, I, pp. 207-8. Schuh, Mineralogy & Crystallography: A Biobibliography, 1469 to 1920, 1506. .

29, [1] pp. 8vo, later red morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, spine finely gilt, a.e.g. [Paris: Gabriel Martin, 9 Sept. 1755 & following days]. The extremely rare sale catalogue of the library of Nicolas Alexandre Ségur (1697-1755), "the Prince des Vignes." The Marquis de Ségur "owned the two first-growths of Lafite and Latour, plus Mouton (now first-growth), the great estate of Calon-Ségur in St-Estèphe and other properties in the Médoc and Graves. Louis XV dubbed him the Prince des Vignes, after being told that the (apparently diamond) buttons of his coat were the precious stones of his vineyard, cut and polished... "While most talk of this exceptionally prosperous man concentrates on his income, it should be remembered that it was he who drew the definite boundaries between the land of Lafite and the neighbouring Mouton, thus creating two profoundly different styles of wine. He undoubtedly ran his estates with great zeal and gave their reputations the solid foundation that has never foundered."-Hugh Johnson, Vintage: The Story of Wine, p. 257. This is one of Gabriel Martin's later catalogues (he died in 1761). The library consists of 56 lots but with many titles separately listed within each lot (totaling about 600 separate items), each priced. The library was rich in literature, theater, music, and opera. The sale took place at the "hôtel" of the Marquis on the Place de Louis le Grand (now the Place Vendôme) in Paris. A very fine copy; WorldCat locates only the BnF copy. Armorial bookplate of Louis de la Forets, Comte d'Armaillé and another. .

The Journal of a Voyage to Lisbon

London: Printed for A. Millar, 1755, 1755. First edition (initially suppressed). Cross, pages 326-327; NCBEL II, 931. Several of the signatures and leaves are a little browned; edges slightly rubbed; very good copy.. 12mo, later panelled calf by Zaehnsdorf, red and brown morocco labels, gilt decorations and lettering, a.e.g. With half-title. The last published work by Henry Fielding (1707-1754), a lively account of his journey by ship to Portugal where he soon after died and was buried. There are two versions of the text, as is well recorded by Cross and others: the first was apparently suppressed, and a heavily corrected second version was then printed and published. The first version is known as the "Francis" issue; it ends on page 245; and the second is the "Humphrys" issue; it ends on page 228. On November 1, 1755 a deadly earthquake, tsunami, and fire destroyed much of Lisbon, and there was a unexpected new demand for Fielding's posthumous work. The publisher Andrew Millar then met the demand by issuing copies using the original suppressed sheets. See Cross, volume three, pages 85-92.

        Johnson's Dictionary

England, 1755. London, W. Strahan et al., 1755, First Edition. 2 volumes, folio 41.9 x 26,4 cm (16-1/2inches x 10-3/8 inches). Titles in red and black, all but the preface set in two columns. First edition of Johnson's Dictionary. This work has at various times been called "the most important British cultural monument of the eighteenth century" (Hitchings); "the only dictionary [of the English language] compiled by a writer of the first rank " (Robert Burchfield) and first genuinely descriptive dictionary in any language. Samuel Johnson's monumental work, which drew on all the best ideas and aspects of earlier dictionaries, was published on April 15, 1755 in an edition of 2000 copies. The price was a high one 4 10s, or 3 10s to the trade. The group of publishers whose names appear in the imprint were joint proprietors, having paid Johnson 1575 in installments for a copy, which took him eight years to complete. Some of Johnson's advance was used to rent the well-known house in 17 Gough Square, where the garret became his "dictionary work-shop". He called on the assistance of six amanuenses, five of whom, Boswell proudly records, were Scotsmen, and who were almost derelict when he hired them. "With no real library at hand, Johnson wrote the definitions of over 40,000 words... illustrating the senses in which these words could be used by including about 114,000 quotations drawn from English writing in every field of learning during the two centuries from the middle of the Elizabethan period down to his own time" (W. Jackson Bate, Samuel Johnson (New York, 1977), p.247. "It is the dictionary itself which justifies Noah Webster's statement that Johnson's writings had, in philology, the effect which Newton's discoveries had in mathematics. Johnson introduced into English lexicography principles which had already been accepted in Europe, but were quite novel in mid-eighteenth-century England. He codified the spelling of English words; he gave full and lucid definitions of their meanings (often entertainingly colored by his High Church and Tory propensities); and he adduced extensive and apt illustrations from a wide range of authoritative writers...but despite the progress made during the past two centuries in historical and comparative philology, Johnson's book may still be consulted for instruction as well as pleasure" (PMM). The Dictionary was issued with two title-pages, identifying the volumes as "I" and "II," and is usually divided between the letters "K" and "L", as here. . First Edition. Very Good.

Imperial folio (490 x 400 mm). (4),+ XXII,+ 447 pp. Title with engraved vignette. Near contemporary marbled full calf, richly gilt spine with raised bands and green title and part title labels, red edges. Spine defective at top. Garcia 1414. Furchheim p. 7. Blackmer 97. The somewhat unfortunate scholar Ottavio Antonio Bayardi (1694-1764) was forced to publish this catalogue after his failure with the ?Prodromo delle antichità d?Ercolano? And when the prime minister Bernardo Tanuccio founded the Accademia Ercolanese - in the same year - Bayardi was fired from his position as sole publisher of material from the excavations. Soon he also came to be replaced by Berardo Galiani as member of the Accademia. This catalogue consists of a list of all the finds made in Herculaneum and Pompeii and it is published as a pre-catalogue to the planned large ?Le antichita d'Ercolano eposte? The catalogue, however, offers only the listing and a brief description of the artefacts. The title vignette is after Camillo Paderni and engraved by Antonio Piaggio. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1755 - An extremely rare Philippine imprint on native defence against piracy. 1755. Manila. Imprenta en la Compania de Jesus. In 8vo (200 mm x 135 mm). 14 pp. Recent calf. Printed on rice paper; lightly browned; a very good copy. First edition. The account of the ‘brave defense of the native Vesayans in the town of Polompong on the island of Leyte, who fought against the Muslims from Ilanos and Melanaoes’ was most probably a first hand account by the local Jesuit priest. There were several incursions by the Moros on the island of Leyte in 1754 which prior to this incident resulted in the burning to the ground of its two largest towns – Sogod and Maasim – and other villages. This account describes how the residents of Palompon defended themselves after having sought refuge in the local church. Although the town was pillaged and houses burnt to the ground, most of its inhabitants escaped death or capture for enslavement. The stone church, which had to be large enough to hold the entire community in worship, was also large enough to protect them all in a siege. Bibliotheca Filipina, 2296. Streit VI 1099.         The Whole Duty of a Woman; or, A Guide to the Female Sex

London : Printed for and sold by Edward Midwinter, 1755-01-01. Hardcover. Good. 12mo. 7th edition. Bound in contemporary calf. Wear and chipping to leather spine and boards. Tanning and toning to pages. Loss to head of fep and rear corner of last page. <Br> Kenrick's most successful work, reprinted in over 20 editions, was a courtesy book originally published in 1753. but the author was simply listed as "A Lady." Kenrick here assumed the persona of a fallen woman, now reformed, who wants to persuade other women to live a life of virtue. The irony of Kenrick's presuming to improve the moral tone of feminine England has not gone unnoticed: he has been described as "one of London's most despised, drunken, and morally degenerate hack writers in the later eighteenth century.

"A system of moral philosophy. In three books ... published from the original manuscript, by his son Francis Hutcheson, M.D. To which is prefixed some account of the life, writings, and character of the author..."

Glasgow: printed and sold by R. & A. Foulis...London: sold by A. Millar...and T. Longman. 1755. "First edition, 2 volumes, 4to, pp. [12], xlviii, 358; [4], 380; contemporary full calf neatly rebacked, red and black morocco labels on spines; board edges dry and peeling, corners restored; the binding is sound and the text is clean; a good, sound copy. Among the subscribers is Adam Smith (a student of Hutcheson's at Glasgow who took two sets), and Lord Kaims. ""Hutcheson was a close follower of the third Lord Shaftesbury, and had a great influence upon the Scottish philosophers of the 'common-sense' school. His first essays were directed against the selfish and cynical theories of Hobbes and Mandeville. He adopted and developed the 'moral sense' doctrine as given by Shaftesbury in contrast to the egoistic utilitarianism of his time...he was apparently the first writer to use Bentham's phrase, 'the greatest happiness of the greatest number'...[and] He may be thus classed as one of the first exponents of a decided utilitarianism as distinguished from 'egoistic hedonism'"" (DNB).
