Rare 1754 issue of the most important Portuguese newspaper of the period with one of the earliest publications mentioning George Washington (1732-1799) AND including the first translation of the correspondence between Governor Robert Dinwiddie and the French forces Commandant. Not in Sabin. The newspaper translates to Portuguese the letter from Virginia's Governor Robert Dinwiddie sent to Legardeur de St. Pierre, the Commandant of the French forces in Ohio. The letter, dated Williamsburg October 31th 1753, was carried by George Washington, aged 21, on a mission to negotiate with the French. The journal also translates the reply letter (mentioning likewise George Washington) written by the French Commandant to Governor Robert Dinwiddie. These translations were based on the letters included in the valuable pamphlet "The journal of Major George Washington, sent by the Hon. Robert Dinwiddie, Esq; His Majesty's lieutenant-governor, and commander in chief of Virginia, to the commandant of the French forces on Ohio. : To which are added, the governor's letter, and a translation of the French officer's answer" printed in 1754 in Williamsburgh and London. The present Portuguese newspaper issued the same year seems to be the earliest known printed translation of these letters (for a detailed description of the Journal editions and translations see Sabin 101710). The gazette also reports on several other worldwide events. Title: Gazeta de Lisboa. Numero 28. Quinta feira 18 de julho 1754. Saurin
1754. Rare. Bon exemplaire. Complet. Bernard-Joseph Saurin. [Click Below for Full Description]

BRITISH AMERICAN PLANTATIONS / NORTHWEST COAST MAPS) Urban,
D. Henry and R. Cave at St. John's Gate, 1754. Emanuel Bowen (cartographer); William Hogarth; et al. Volume XXIV. Bound volume, 3/4 leather binding (spine perished, covers detached and very worn); 8 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches; title page and preface; 603 pp and index. Bookplate on verso of front cover of Richard Pulteney, MD, the English physician who advanced acceptance of Linnaean taxonomy and the author of the first English language biography of the botanist. It appears the volume subsequently became the property of the Exeter City Library, as is affirmed by the presence of several circular ink stamps on various pages. Volume notable for two (uncolored) maps, "British American Plantations" by Bowen, and "Discoveries of Admiral de Fontes." One plate, Bridge at Blois, suffers a clean tear along one fold. With regard to the plates, the volume has been eccentrically bound. Several plates are not present, others are bound not according to the publisher's instructions, while there are present plates from other sources. These plates are of eminent men of the time and are inserted at intervals throughout the volume. Overall, contents in good condition, with plates bright and clean--although somewhat of a grab bag in terms of their organization plus the unlisted presence of additional subject matter. Present is a bright and clean copy of Bowen's "Map of the British American Plantations...from Boston...to Georgia." (9 x 11 1/2 inches.) This highly detailed map identifies the Plantations along the east coast and also English and French forts, the topography of the region and established tr … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPECTACULAR WORLD MAP WITH THE STORY OF CREATION?Mappe Monde, contenant les Parties Connues du Globe Terrestre? Copper engraving made by Gobert-Denis Chambon after the work of Guillaime De L?Isle, published in 1754 by Jean Janvier and S.G. Longschamps. Coloured by a later hand. Size: approx. 119 x 148 cmThis beautiful world map consists of two hemispheres. The Eastern Hemisphere is being carried by Hercules (with the skin of the Nemean Lion), the Western Hemisphere is carried by Atlas. At the top, title ribbons are held by putti. At the bottom left we see the starry sky from the Northern Hemisphere, in the bottom right there is the sky from the Southern Hemisphere, at the bottom in the middle a so-called armillary sphere in which we see the celestial sphere with the main tropics, as well as images of the Ptolemaic geocentric world system (in which the earth is at the centre and surrounded by the planets) and the Copernican system (in which the earth is only one of the planets of our solar system). The history of geography is described below the hemispheres. From ancient history to Claudius Ptolomeus and 'modern' history with Abraham Ortelius and the world projection by Gerard Mercator and of course Nicolas Sanson. The story ends with the subtle message that it was the French that have contributed most to perfecting geography...The map is framed by the Biblical story of Creation:On the first day God divided the light from the darkness. On the second day God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, 1754. 8vo (157 x 105 mm). [70] pages. Calligraphic title, signed and dated by the scribe. Text in a neat italic script in dark brown ink, 14-15 lines, first lines of headings and initials in red ink (faded), thick and thin rule page borders throughout. A few additions or corrections. Some dust-soiling, small stains in gutters of first 4 leaves. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt edges (broken, defective). Provenance: Jean de St. Haond, signature on title; given in 1759 to a female relative when she took her vows: inscription on front flyleaf, "Ce livre est a l'usage de la Soeur Saint Haon [qui] est entrer [sic] aux Couvent pour etre religieuse le 6 mars mille sept cent cinq quante neuf âgée de dix neuf ans" (This book is for the use of Sister Saint Haon who entered the Convent to become a nun on March 6 1759 at the age of 19).*** A gift for taking the veil: this manuscript copy of Pascal's prayer for the sick to accept their fate as the will of god was written by a young boy or adolescent for his father, and given to a female relative of the same name, no doubt his sister, upon her entry into a convent. Following his youthful achievements in mathematics and physics, Pascal turned his energies exclusively to philosophy and theology. He suffered from poor health throughout his short life, and died aged 39 in 1662. This prayer for the right attitude toward illness was probably written in 1660. By then seriously ill, Pascal had begun rejecting the prescriptions of his doctors, affirming that "sickness is the natural state of the Christian." The piece was first published pos … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Maccay, who gave the following Account to his Honour the Governor, of the late Action between them and the French, at the Great Meadows in the Western Parts of this Dominion."The third of this instant July, about 9 a Clock, we received Intelligence that the French, having been reinforced with 700 Recruits, had left Monongahela, and were in full March with 900 Men to attack us. Upon this, as our Numbers were so unequal (our Force not exceeding 300) we prepared for our Defence in the best Manner we could, by throwing up a small Intrenchment, which we had not Time to perfect, before our Centinel gave Notice, about Eleven a Clock, of their Approach, by firing his Piece, which he did at the Enemy, and as we learned afterwards killed three of their Men, on which they began to fire upon us, at about 600 Yards Distance, but without any Effect: We immediately called all our Men to their Arms, and drew up in Order before our Trenches; but as we looked upon this distant Fire of the Enemy only as an Artifice to intimidate, or draw our Fire from us, we waited their nearer Approach before we returned their Salute. FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Gazette, December 19, 1754. Newspaper. Philadelphia: Benjamin Franklin and David Hall. 6 pp., 9 1/4 x 14 1/2 in. This issue of Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette includes communications between Lieutenant Governor Robert Hunter Morris and the Pennsylvania General Assembly regarding responses to the French threat on the western border of the colony. Conflict between French and English forces there erupted into the French and Indian War, and globally into the Seven Years' War.It also includes details of a lecture by Ebenezer Kinnersley, a partner of Benjamin Franklin in experiments on electricity, and a brief notice of George Whitefield's sermons in New York City. ExcerptsLieutenant Governor Robert Hunter Morris to the Pennsylvania General Assembly, December 3, 1754"I think it my Duty.to lay before you a Letter I have since received from Sir Thomas Robinson, one of His Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State, signifying to me, 'His Majesty's express Commands, that I should not only act vigorously in Defence of the Government under my Care; but that I should likewise be aiding and assisting His Majesty's other Colonies, to repel any hostile Attempts made against them.'" (p1/c1)"many Things have happened since the Retreat from the Forks of Mohongialo [Monangahela], that have put our Affairs upon the Frontiers in a very bad Situation, much worse than His Majesty and His Ministers have any Knowledge of, or than they can possibly imagine. From the Letters and Intelligence I have ordered to be laid before you, it will appear that the French ha … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRANCIS HOPKINSON
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Gazette, November 21, 1754. Newspaper. Philadelphia: Benjamin Franklin and David Hall. 6 pp., 9 1/4 x 14 1/2 in. This issue of Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette reports addresses by two students at the Academy of Philadelphia, including seventeen-year-old Francis Hopkinson, who went on to write music and poetry, sign the Declaration of Independence, and design the American flag. Founded in 1751, the Academy provided classical education and instruction in practical skills. Most of the trustees had received a classical education and favored a similar curriculum for the academy, but trustee Benjamin Franklin favored an education that stressed practical skills. He advocated teaching all classes in English and emphasizing mathematics and science. ExcerptsFrancis Hopkinson, "On Education in General," November 12, 1754"The right Education of Youth has ever been esteemed, by wise Men, one of the chief Cares of the best constituted States; and it is a Truth, confirmed both by Reason and Experience, that Societies have more or less flourished, in all that exalts or embellishes human Nature, in Proportion as they have taken more or less Care in this important Matter." (p1/c1)"Upon the whole then, it appears, that whether the Design be to preserve a good Constitution civil and religious, and transmit its Spirit, uncorrupted, down thro' Ages; or whether the Design be to mend a bad One, and secure it against all Dangers from without, it is only to be done effectually by the slow, but sure Means of a proper Education of Youth." BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Gazette, October 24, 1754. Newspaper. Philadelphia: Benjamin Franklin and David Hall. 6 pp., 9 1/4 x 14 1/2 in. This issue of Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette reports the speech of Deputy Governor Morris of Pennsylvania to the General Assembly, urging them to prevent the French and their Native American allies from gaining control of the colony's western border. The General Assembly responded that they were eager to assist but lacked any "Instructions from the Crown how to conduct ourselves on this important Occasion" and requested a recess until called together again. ExcerptsPennsylvania Deputy Governor Robert Hunter Morris' Speech to the General Assembly, October 14, 1754:"The particular Matter I have at present to recommend to your Consideration, is the State of the Frontiers of this and the neighbouring Governments, where you will find the French acting with a steady Uniformity, and avowed Resolution, to make themselves Masters of this Country. Their Encroachments upon his Majesty's Territories, and their hostile Proceedings in this Time of Peace, may shew us what we are to expect in case of open War, if we suffer them to strengthen themselves in the Possession of that Country they have so unjustly seized, and from whence they may not only annoy us by the Indians in their Alliance, but can, at any Time, march a Body of Troops into this plentiful Province, situated in the Center of the British Dominions in America."
Brussel, Georgius Fricx, 1754. 4to. With an allegorical engraving on title-page showing the coat of arms of Dendermonde held by four putti and the woodcut coat of arms of Maria Theresia of Austria above the opening of the text. 19th-century boards, covered with paste paper. 47, [1 blank] pp. Extremely rare first and only edition of a proclamation of the new College of Medicine of Dendermonde. In 1749 the magistrate of the city of Dendermonde reinstalled the College of Medicine and had new regulations drafted. Empress Maria Theresia refused to accept them, aiming to diminish the local authorities, and instead ordered the medical college of Ghent to advise in the foundation of a new College of Medicine in Dendermonde. When the new college was installed, the present proclamation explained the new rules and regulation for any medical professional within the governance of Dendermonde. It is mostly based on the Ghent example from 1663 and partly on the Brussels pharmacopoeia, but has some departures that make it unique. The sewing has come lose, resulting in partly detached quires and one detached leaf, and some minor thumbing to the first two leaves, otherwise internally in good condition. Board worn. Top edge brightly gilt. Marbled endpapers. An excellent copy internally, with none of the foxing typical of the era. 12mo (pages 160 x 100 mm) collating: xii, [2], 292; [4], 274, [2, adverts]; [4], 308; complete. A pleasing set of this rare work, of which there has been no complete copy at auction in over 35 years. At a time when Voltaire and his literati questioned the artistic value of Shakespeare's works, Charlotte Lennox and her three volume Shakespear Illustrated (1753-1754) carved out space for feminine voices within the debate. Taking Shakespeare to task for what she saw as his debauchery, over-use of source-books, and usurpation of authority from female characters by "taking from them the power and moral independence which older ramnces had given them" (Doody). Lennox became one of the first published female literary critics and she laid the groundwork for other women's involvement with the Bard. Outspoken and detailed, Lennox tackles twenty two of Shakespeare's plays and their sources, and she relies on her own translations of the Italian and French rather than rely on preexisting translations by men. In this sense, Lennox asserted herself as a knowledgeable authority worthy of engaging with figures such as Samuel Johnson and Henry Fielding. And she made it possible for women to influence the creation of the British canon.Feminist Companion 648. ESTC T138281, T139076. Fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAMEAU (Jean-Philippe)
Paris, Prault fils, Lambert, Duchesne, 1754.
¶ INED 4423 - Kress 5347 - Sprengler p.251.

Lennox, Charlotte
London: Printed for A. Millar, 1753, 1754. First Edition. Volumes 1-2 published in 1753, followed by Volume 3 in 1754. Finely bound by Bayntun in half red crushed morocco over marbled boards. And she made it possible for women to influence the creation of the British canon. Feminist Companion 648. ESTC T138281, T139076. Fine. F … [Click Below for Full Description]

[14], 460, [20] pp. First edition of the German translation of a book on ranunculi by the French priest and botanist Jean Paul Rome d'Ardène, translated into German by G.L. Huth. Ranunculus is a genus of toxic flowering plants, including buttercups, spearworts and water crowfoots. It is divided into two parts. The first (pp. 1-39) deals with the history of ranunculi, how they got their name and where they originated, and gives a description of the physical appearance of the plant. The second part (pp. 40-450) deals in great depth with its cultivation, commenting on the perfect soil, how and when to water them and place them in sunlight, how to get rid of aphids and plant diseases, etc., followed by descriptions of the folding engraved plates and an index. One plate depicts the roots of the ranunculus, the others show different types of flowers, all coloured by a contemporary hand.A small hole in the frontispiece and title-page, a tear in 2 of the folding engraved plates, 1 slightly affecting the image, both restored, 2 plates slightly frayed along the margins, and some occasional minor foxing in the text leaves. Third edition, enlarged and augmented. A highly influential utopian adventure, published just 15 years after Gulliver's Travels. It has since run to over 60 editions in 13 different languages. Set in the Norwegian town of Bergen, a penniless student - Nicolas Klim - is compelled to visit a strange cave, carved into a mountainside above the town, which regularly sends out puffs of warm air. As he investigates, he falls into a void, ending up on the subterranean planet Nazar, which is inhabited by sentient monkeys, contemplative humanoid trees, a society of birds locked in eternal war, goat philosophers, and double basses which communicate musically with one another. The novel is, at its essence, satirical, though also remarkably progressive, with a society in which women and men occupy similar positions in public l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Saurin
1754. Rare. Bon exemplaire. Complet. Bernard-Joseph Saurin. [Click Below for Full Description]
