1754. This is the famous work of Bishop George Lavington, an early opponent of the Methodists 1754 Anti-Methodist Revival Treatise Printed for J. and P. Knapton, in Lud-gate Street. _____________________________________________________________________ George Lavington (1684 -1762) was a Bishop of Exeter from 1746 to 1762. Born in Mildenhall, Wiltshire to Rev Joseph Lavington and his wife Elizabeth née Constable, he was educated at New College, Oxford (becoming a fellow in 1708) and later appointed Chaplain to King George I. He served as a Prebendary at Worcester Cathedral. Later, he served as Weldland Prebendary at St Paul's Cathedral, London. On 8 February 1746, he was consecrated Bishop of Exeter at Lambeth Palace, which post he held until death. He was an ardent opponent of Methodism. On being appointed bishop of Exeter, which included Cornwall, one of his first acts was to close the pulpits of North Cornwall to Methodists. He also produced a stream of letters and pamphlets attacking Methodism and John Wesley. One of these pamphlets contained an accusation against John Wesley concerning his conduct with women, and in particular that he had made indecent advances to the maid of a Mrs Morgan at Mitchell in Cornwall. When Wesley investigated he found that Mrs Morgan was merely a gossip, and that Lavington had never troubled to verify the truth of the statements. Lavington also attacked George Whitfield, although their relations were better and Lavington once came with his clergy to hear Whitfield preach. A reconciliation took place between the Bishop and John Wesley when th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Talleyrand, Charles Maurice (1754-1838)
Talleyrand, Charles Maurice (1754-1838) - Document signed in the name of Napoleon I. - French diplomat. He worked successfully from the regime of Louis XVI., through the French Revolution and then under Napoleon I., Louis XVIII., Charles X., and Louis-Philippe. Known since the turn of the 19th century simply by the name Talleyrand, he remains a figure that polarizes opinion. Some regard him as one of the most versatile, skilled and influential diplomats in European history, and some believe that he was a traitor, betraying in turn, the Ancien Régime, the French Revolution, Napoleon, and the Restoration. Partly printed document signed Charles Maurice . Document signed "Décret Impérial". 1p., 11.25 x 17.25 inch, 1808 July 27, blind embossed seal at the bottom. 1754. Rare. Bon exemplaire. Complet. Bernard-Joseph Saurin. [Click Below for Full Description]

A wonderful example of this extremely scarce second edition of Martin's english dictionary, published one year prior to Samuel Johnson's dictionary. Benjamin Martin (1704-1782) was a lexicographer who compiled one of the early English dictionaries, the Lingua Britannica Reformata (1749). He also was a lecturer on science and maker of scientific instruments. Martin was born in Worplesdon, Surrey and began life as a ploughboy, but graduated to become a teacher. A legacy of £500 enabled him to buy books and instruments, and he became a lecturer and instrument maker. He was an early champion for the Newtonian system. In 1737, he published the Biblioteca Technologia - a survey of natural philosophy in 25 sub-headings. In 1740, he moved to Fleet Street, near the Royal Society where his admired Newton would often lecture. He began manufacturing Hadley's quadrant (a predecessor to the sextant) and optical instruments. His business prospered, and he al … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

CREPY (Etienne-Louis).
[Click Below for Full Description]

DELAGRIVE (Jean, abbé).
Paris, 1754. 465 x 806 mm.
