I viaggi di Ciro. Tradotti dall'idioma francese

      S. l. (tip. : Napoli 1756). ITA

Erz Stuffen und Berg Arten mit Farben genau abgebildet. herausgegeben durch Johann Michael Seligmann / Fossilium metalla et res metallicas concernentium glebae suis coloribus expressae.

Nuremberg: Johann Michael Seligmann, 1753. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (254x201 mm). 34 hand-coloured engraved plates (only, of 46) many heightened with gold and silver, 44 pp. only (of 56) of explanatory text plus engraved title page in Latin and 44 pp. only (of 56) of German text plus additional engraved title-page. Modern calf-backed boards with morocco letting pieces to spine, new endpapers, contemporary marbled edges. Internally with only very minor toning and spotting, pp.37-44 of German text misbound among Latin text. A crisp copy with the plates finely colored, very rare in any condition. ----Hoover 728; DSB XII, 185-86; Honeyman 2796; Freilich Cat. 480. - Rare first edition of a work intended as a guide for miners and prospectors, providing detailed descriptions of the physical properties, localities, and modes of occurrence of various minerals ores, with beautifully coloured illustrations. Schmidel's work is hardly ever found complete, perhaps because of its publication in 28 parts from 1753 to 1765. Three of the four copies in the BL are imperfect, as were the Hoover, Freilich and Honeyman copies. Hoover calls for 46 plates. None of three copies sold at auction since 1980 contained more that 26; the Freilich copy had 21. This copy contains 34 plates an thus constitutes the most complete copy which has come up on the market for many decades. The plates included here are of the highest quality, several being beautifully heightened in silver and gold. "Schmiedel's interests as a naturalist focused on mineralogy, ore mineralogy in particular, and in 1753 he began issuing parts of a book designed to help miners and prospectors recognize the different kinds of metalliferous ore minerals. Erz Stuffen und Berg Arten ("Ore Specimens and Mineral Species of the Mines") consisted of descriptive text written by Schmiedel, complemented by an eventual total of 46 hand-colored copper-plate engravings of mineral specimens. The engravings were nearly all done by the Nuremberg engraver Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762). Seligmann had received his training in art at the Nürnberg Malerakademie, and in his short lifetime created illustrations for many books on science and natural history. Several artists produced the original paintings from which Seligmann executing his engravings; these included J. F. Kiefhaber, N. Gabler, J. C. Keller, J. C. Dietzsch and Christian Leinbarger, with engraving assistance from Johann Sebastian Leitner and Johann Christoph von Mayr. The last plates were issued sometime after 1771" (C. Schuh, 2005. Mineralogy & Crystallography: An Annotated Bibliography of Books Published 1469 through 1919). "The objective of this volume was to accurately portray minerals of economic importance in their "exact" colors, so that miners and prospectors could use it as a handbook and a guide to locate valuable ores. The noted engraver Johann Michael Seligmann [see note below] was responsible for the majority of the fine copper plates which show various specimens of copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold ores. The text, written in both Latin and German, meticulously describes the physical properties and modes of occurrence of the figured specimens, thus anticipating the importance of external characteristics in mineralogy. The specimens shown on the plates are unfortunately not fine crystallized specimens, but typical examples of valuable ores; therefore, one will be disappointed if too much is expected of the illustrations as mineral specimen depictions. They are, however, well executed pictures of ores samples. The Berlinischer Sammlungen review notice of Fossilium Metalla et res Metallicas indicates that sections containing 3 plates were to be issued every 2 months. Probably due to an insufficient number of subscribers however, the flow of new descriptions and plates became erratic, and with only twenty-eight plates distributed, eventually halted in 1765, although by this time, Schmidel's book was highly admired and much used as a practical tool. Yet, no new descriptions or plates appeared until after 1771. At this point, new sections were published until a total of forty-two plates were issued, then apparently publication again ceased, for copies with 42 plates are considered complete in the standard bibliographic references. Nevertheless, a very few copies exist with descriptions and four additional plates, thereby totaling 46 plates. Since the added plates do not identify their engraver or year of creation, it is assumed they were issued at some later time, and therefore not included in many copies. The signature collation of the leaves clearly shows that the text was published in such a way that the book could be sold in separate German and Latin volumes as well as the configuration with the German and Latin combined into a single volume... Since most copies of this work appear to be the combination text, it can probably be assumed that both sets of text were sent to subscribers, and it was the subscribers who made the final determination as to what should be bound or not."         Voyage fait par ordre du roi en 1750 et 1751,dans L'Am‚rique Septentrionale, pour rectifier les Cartes des C"otes deL'Acadie, de L'Isle Royale & de L'Isle de Terre-Neuve; et pour enfixerles principaux points par des Observations Astronomique

Paris: Del'Imprimerie Royale, 1753. viii+[folding map]+288+[1 folding table]+[1 folding chart]+[x] pages with 6 folding engraved maps and index. Quarto (10 1/4" x 8") bound in contemporary quarter leather with green leather label to spine in gilt over calf-backed boards. (Sabin 11723; Howegego C87) First edition.Joseph-Bernard de Chabert de Cogolin followed family tradition when he entered the navy as a midshipman in July 1741. After several voyages in the Mediterranean, where he displayed an interest in science and a talent for drawing charts that brought him to the attention of the minister of Marine, he was appointed sub-section leader of midshipmen and posted to Brest. In 1746 he made two voyages to reconnoiter the coasts of Acadia and correct the defectiveness of French charts. While in the frigate Castor he drew a chart of the roads and harbor of the Baie de Chibouctou (Halifax harbor), and later the same year he was sent in the Sirène to reconnoiter the harbor at Annapolis Royal and spy out the British ships anchored there. The next spring he joined Jacques-Pierre de Taffanel de La Jonquière's squadron in the Gloire and was taken prisoner by the British during the battle off Cape Ortegal, Spain. After repatriation Chabert was promoted ensign in April 1748 and retained in Paris by the minister, who wanted him to learn astronomy in order to instruct naval officers. Two years later he was chosen to go to ÃŽle Royale (Cape Breton Island) and continue his survey of the shores of Acadia. His expedition was organized by Roland-Michel Barrin* de La Galissonière, then head of the Dépôt des Cartes et Plans de la Marine in Paris. Chabert reached Louisbourg in August 1750 and immediately began to make a long series of observations about the waters of ÃŽle Royale. Although the weather was continually bad, he entered what is now the Strait of Canso, obtained a longitude from the shore, and twice observed the astronomical latitude. He also recorded tides and compass variations and charted the strait. At Canso itself he carried out similar observations and drew a second chart before returning to Louisbourg. He then surveyed the coast of ÃŽle Royale from Guyon Island, southwest of Cape Gabarus, northward beyond Scatarie Island. During the winter he had a but constructed on the ramparts at Louisbourg and despite the rigours of the climate successfully established the longitude of the town before spring. In June 1751 he departed for Cape Sable at the southern extremity of Nova Scotia to determine its latitude and longitude and then coasted along the shore. At the conclusion of his survey he discovered the length of Nova Scotia to be about 15 to 20 leagues shorter than was shown on contemporary charts. The following month he successfully located Sable Island, and in August he charted the southern coast of Newfoundland from Cape Ray to Cape Race. Returning to France in November, Chabert was attached to the Dépôt de la Marine under La Galissonière's direction and prepared his surveys for publication. The result appeared in 1753 as Voyage fait par ordre du roi en 1750 et 1751, dans l'Amérique septentrionale. The work is in two parts: the first is an abridgement of his journal accompanied by charts; the second is devoted to his astronomical observations. It contained the most accurate hydrographic survey of the east coast that had yet been made, and the ministry of Marine subsidized publication by taking 200 copies for its own use. In 1754 Chabert was made a knight of the order of Saint-Louis as a reward for his services and two years later he was promoted lieutenant.Condition:S2 slightly stained at lower margin, slightly foxed and toned, 3 small wormholes at tale of spine, slight separation of front head hinge, corners bumped else a very nice copy.

Mémoires de Gaudence de Luques, prisonnier de l'inquisition...

Amsterdam: n.p. 1753. Four volumes in two, octavo; with all four titles and half-titles, each volume with an engraved plate as well as an engraved headpiece vignette at start of text; contemporary French mottled calf, an attractive set. The second French edition, with four wonderful engravings and four vignettes by Fessard, and the first illustrated edition in any language. An earlier French translation, by Miltz and de Saint-Germain, was published in 1746, and it was not until 1753 that this edition came out, newly revised and extended by the prominent eighteenth-century man-of-letters, Jean-Baptiste Dupuy-Demportes (d. 1770). Although it pretends to derive from an Italian source, the Memoirs was created by an Englishman. The text was sometimes thought to be the work of Bishop Berkeley, but became correctly attributed to Berington during the nineteenth century. As the title suggests, the work takes the form of a trial transcript, with questioning from various inquisitors and a learned commentary from one Signor Rhedi. The protagonist Gaudentio, hauled in front of the Inquisition, describes Mezzorania in Africa, a city which has been cut off from external contact for over three thousand years. His first impression of the principal city of Phor is of an 'immense Garden', but his more detailed analysis shows a city which owes much to the solar model earlier proposed by Campanella in Città del Sole. Less regulated than many other utopias, the citizens have a system based on the precept 'Thou shalt do no wrong to anyone'. Unusually for the strict utopia, long-term relationships based on love are actively encouraged; indeed, Gaudentio talks at length about his own relationship with a Mezzoranian woman. It is this emotional engagement which leads Rees to see in the Memoirs an unusually novelistic utopia, and thus a work which avoids some of the neatness and simplifications of others in the genre.Ellison, in an article devoted to this 'forgotten utopia' and its authorship, comments that 'Berington can stand upon his own merits, and the early appraisal of the work which saw in it the reflection of a wise, humane, and generous spirit does not have to be seriously discounted.' ('Gaudentio Di Lucca: A Forgotten Utopia', PMLA, 1935). Similarly, Gove happily approves Dunlop classing the work with Gulliver's Travels and Robinson Crusoe. Heads of spines chipped.

Nieuwe kaart van het Oostelykste Deel der Weereld...

Amsterdam: Isaak Tirion, 1753. Handcoloured map measuring 360 x 490 mm. (sheet size); mounted, fine. A colourful and attractive eighteenth-century Dutch map of the Old World, Africa, Asia and Australasia. Interestingly, it depicts the Australian continent connected to the landmass of New Guinea - an archaism given that Abel Tasman proved the two lands distinct and separate in 1643, some 110 years prior to the publication of this map. Ironically, a large river flowing from the deep interior of the continent into the Gulf of Carpenteria is named 'Abel Tasman's R.' Also discovered and named by Tasman, Van Diemen's land (being present-day Tasmania) is also notably absent and the entire south-eastern mass of the continent is approximated in dotted lines stretching to the extreme south. As was conventional of the era, present day Western Australia is labelled New Holland, and the landfalls of principal eighteenth-century Dutch voyagers are noted. The Amsterdam based publisher Isaak Tirion (1705-1769) is known to have produced books, charts and maps for the Dutch mercantile elite. Tirion was primarily a cartographic publisher, who issued several lavish atlases as well as smaller geographical guides (literally 'Hand Atlas'), from which this attractive map is derived. During his prolific career Tirion was associated with the Dutch East India Company; in 1757 Willem Udemans, a shipwright and director of the VOC shipyard at Middelburg commissioned Tirion to print a treatise on naval architecture. He also published a Dutch language edition of Commodore Anson's circumnavigation in 1749, a work remarkable for the quality of its maps and charts.

Histoire du chevalier Des Grieux, et de Manon Lescaut

Aux dépens de La Compagnie 1753 - - Aux dépens de La Compagnie, A Amsterdam 1753, Pet. In-12 (8,5x15,5cm), (4) 11p.

Artist: Homann Erben RJ & Julien; issued in: Paris; date: 1753 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; condition: Very good; size in cm : 38 x 65 - description: double hemishere map in oblique polar projection. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad. - Vita of the artist: "Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. The company was known as "Homann Erben", "Homanniani Heredes", or "Heritiers de Homann" abroad. "

Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects.

London: for A. Millar; and A. Kincaid and A. Donaldson, at Edinburgh, , 1753. 4 volumes, duodecimo (163 × 100 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt double-rule border to covers, spines ruled gilt, contrasting morocco labels. Joints lightly rubbed and partly cracked but sound, spine ends and corners a little worn, split to leather on front cover of volume one, first and last leaves with offset from the leather turn ins, some occasional spotting and the odd pencil note; a fine set. First collected edition of Hume's Essays. It was with this publication, Andrew Millar's initiative, that Hume achieved wide commercial success. The effect of this edition was to make his philosophy available "in a format which for the first time was both accessible and calculated to encourage sales" (Oxford DNB). Sets of the Essays and treatises are invariably composed of varying Todd issues, which "involves the resetting of all separate volumes previously issued, the reissue of the earlier volumes with cancel titles and, where the cancels were not prepared in sufficient numbers, the further reissue of certain volumes with original titles still intact" (Todd). This quite unsophisticated set consists of Todd's earliest issue of each volume with the exception of volume III. A former owner has made pencil notes to the margins concerning the bibliographical points mentioned by Todd. The set comprises: I. Essays moral and political. The fourth edition corrected, with additions. II. Philosophical essays concerning human understanding. The second edition, with additions and corrections. III. An enquiry concerning the principles of morals. A reissue of the first edition sheets, with a cancel title page. IV. Political discourses. The second edition.

Descriptio genealogica antiquissimae nobilisquae familiae nomine Van den Heede.Bruges, 1775 (with additions to 1783). Royal folio in 4s (44 x 28 cm). Manuscript in black and brown ink on paper, nearly every page with a pre-printed letterpress border of rococo fleurons, with illustrations in coloured gouaches and/or watercolour. With an architectural title-page, 14 small coloured coats of arms and a coloured map; and the text illustrated with about 140 coats of arms (including about 8 blank shields), all but 1 of the arms coloured and about 20 full-page and elaborately decorated; and 5 full-page manuscript cartouches with text. Contemporary mottled, tanned sheepskin, richly gold-tooled spine.

      - A beautifully illustrated and extremely detailed account of the genealogy and heraldry of the Flemish Van der Heede family, including many prominent members of that and related families from the 7th century to the time of writing. Besides full-page illustrations showing Van den Heede and the Flanders arms, there are full-page illustrations showing the arms (the shield measuring about 12 x 12 cm, most of them mantled with elaborately knotted ribbons and tassels) of the families Strabant, Voel, Van Overscelde, De Boot, De Raet, De Wijchuyse, Wouters, Van Bassevelde, Van Hertsberghe, Colen, De Clerck, Le Joly, Resteau, Berenger and Adornes. Jean François Verplancke the elder (1753-1794) was a Bruges genealogist, perhaps a son of the man of that name who headed a Brussels porcelain factory from 1764 to 1772 and father of the Jean François Verplancke fils who published tables of metric conversions in 1803.With modern armorial bookplate. Some leaves have been removed, but there does not appear to be any text or illustration omitted. The manuscript is in very good condition, but two of the armorial seals are badly damaged and a few others slightly damaged, and they have all left an indentation on the leaves before and after. The green pigment occasionally used in the colouring has left a faint shadow on the reverse of the leaves where it was used. The binding is somewhat scuffed with a few minor tears in the leather but remains structurally sound and most of the tooling on the spine is well preserved.

A New and Accurate Survey of the Island of Minorca, a Perticular Plan of the Harbour of Mahon and its Fortifications. with Prospects of the Town of Mahon and St. Philip's Castle. Drawn and Engraved by Capt. Lempriere.

Published According to Act of Parliament by J. Rocque Near Old Round Court in the Strand,, London, 1753 - Rare plan of Minorca Separately issued engraved map sheet, containing three maps, and inset views of 'St. Philip's Castle', and the 'North Prospect of Mahon'. Rare separately issued map of Minorca. The map sheet consists of a map of Spain, a plan of Mahon Harbour, a map of Minorca, and prospects of Mahon and St Philps' Castle. The map of the Island, on a scale of 1 1/3 miles to the inch, shows towns, villages, roads, rivers, administrative boundaries, and coastal features. At the time of works publication Minorca was under British rule. The British had gained control of the island in 1708, during the Wars of Spanish Succession. The map was first published by Lempriere 1746 and sold by Stephen Austen at his bookshop in Newgate Street; with the death of Lempriere in the same year, and Austen in 1750, the plates, where acquired by John Rocque, who published a new edition in 1753 - the present example. For this new edition Rocque has removed Austen's imprint, added text below the cartouche regarding the Battle of Almanza (Almansa fought on 25th April 1707), and engraved a plan of the battle in the sea to the east of Spain. The Battle was disaster for the English and Portuguese forces, and the Spanish and French forces victory assured them control of most of Spain. Britain's capture of Minorca in the following year was somewhat of a consolation prize.Captain Clement Lempriere (1683-1746) was a military engineer, draughtsman, cartographer and engraver, whose most important work was the draughtsmanship for Henry Popple's majestic map of the British Colonies of North America, published in 1733. Born in Jersey in 1683, he served with the British Army, attached to the Corps of Engineers, and in 1741 was appointed Chief Draughtsman at the Tower of London at a salary of £100 per annum. He died 9th July 1746.Rare the OCLC records two institutional examples bearing the 1753 imprint: the British Library, and Yale University Library.Scale: 1 1/3 statute miles to the inch.
